Abstract:
The subject of the research presented in this paper is the Belgrade opus of architect Janko Šafarik (1882-1949). The research is mainly based on primary sources preserved in the Historical Archives of Belgrade, the Belgrade City Museum, the Military Archives and the archives of the Technical University in Dresden. Although Šafarik and his architectural opus have not been completely presented in any previously published papers, a number of them contain important data related to his work, which is why they were considered in this research. The architect's biographical information is presented, followed by his Belgrade opus, which is chronologically divided into before and after World War One. Most attention is devoted to the most fruitful period of his activity, the 1930s. That is when Šafarik worked in the Technical Bureau - the Fenix Company, within which most of his projects were created. All projects attributed to Šafarik, confirmed by considering available archival material, are presented in this paper, regardless of whether they were carried out or not. Through their analysis, the conclusion was reached that Šafarik did not belong to a group of architects who were looking for their own unique architectural expression, or to those who were dominantly committed to one style, but rather that in his oeuvre, his approache varied, mostly in accordance with the dominant approach at the time each individual project was created.

ABSTRACTAt the turn of the 1910s, a productive tension opposed two competing kinds of North American city planning actors: urban reformers (such as Benjamin Marsh, founder of the National Conference on City Planning (NCCP) in 1909) and professional city planners (such as Frederick Law Olmsted Jr, new director of the NCCP in 1911). Analysing the many unsuccessful attempts, between 1911 and 1913, to send the ‘Cities and Town Planning Exhibition’ – a British itinerant exhibition directed by the Scottish thinker and reformer Patrick Geddes (1854–1932) – to tour America, this article examines the transnational similarities and interactions between American and European urbanist milieux; the competing scales (municipal, national, international) in this dialogue; and the strategies of the professionalization of planning.

This thesis is a study of the Sanusiyya order, in which particular emphasis is placed on its role as a resistance movement. Based on a survey of the social, economic, religious and political activities of this sufi brotherhood and its involvement in the tribal system of the North Africa during the first three decades of this century, an attempt will be made to identify on the one hand the factors that contributed to the strength of its resistance to Italian invasion, and on the other, the elements that led to its failure. It is argued that its initial success in the resistance benefited from the network of the zawiyas where ikhwan from different tribes were integrated socially and economically in accordance with strong Islamic values. However, lack of military training and weapons, dependency on a prominent figure, competing ambitions within the Sanusi family and geographical distance ultimately weakened the resistance.

This research presents how the relations of the institutionalization of Chemistry happened in Brazil, using the case of Mackenzie College and its courses in this area. The Mackenzie College, nomination that preceded the current Presbyterian Mackenzie University, has its roots in the coming of Presbyterian North American missionaries to Brazil, who initiated the school in 1870. The prosperity of the school coincided with a period of appreciation of the scientific activity in the country, expressed in the creation of several scientific institutions and also the reformulation of existent ones. The aim of the research was to understand the initial development of the Chemistry Courses at The Mackenzie College, identifying the scientific orientations and the profile of the graduate student. The focus that guided this paper consisted in identifying the developed North American Chemistry in that period, as well as the verification of a pragmatic teaching, based on the intellectual challenges and the practice of the work present in the Presbyterian doctrine. According to the current historiography, which aims at investigating the historical context of the development of science and, in this specific case, of Chemistry, we assessed the primary and secondary sources, contextualizing the social, cultural, economic and religious period that originated the referred project of teaching this subject.

Abstract:

An Essqy in the Philosophy of Language(1969).
Abstract: In this thesis I decided to study the rhetorical structure of theoretical studies of language, aiming to reflect upon the discursive practice involved in the production of linguistic knowledge. In doing so, I have questioned the cientificist discourse that postulates the adoption of certain concepts and a certain method of formalization as a precondition for the characterization of knowledge. Based on an integrationist theoretical perspective (Harris, 1981,1998) centred on a concept of language inspired on Wittgenstein which enables us to question the founding myths of linguistics as well as to emphasise the actions of integration in communication, I have chosen as an object of research the traditional interpretation of J. Austin's theory of speech acts carried out by the philosopher J. Searle, through the analysis of the rhetorical structure of the text "Speech Acts -An Essay in the Philosophy of Language"(1969). Starting from the idea that the theoretical reformulation of Austin done by Searle together with its acceptance and resulting repercussions on linguistics and philosophy are the result of language myth, I analysed the processes of production, interpretation and distribution of Searle's text and concluded that the traditional conceptions of the cientificist and positivist discourse as well as its formal rhetoric configure an order of discourse which is specific to the studies of language which, in this work, I call 'fear of death'. In order to carry out this analysis, I discussed the place of rhetoric in a theory of discourse, promoting a theoretical/methodological revision of the method proposed by Margutti Pinto (1998) in his analysis of the argumentative procedures of Wittgenstein. Thus I elaborated, by studying the rhetoric Searle used when interpreting Austin, a proposal of rhetorical analysis by a criticaldiscursive approach (Fairclough, 2001) which is in tine with the integrationist program which includes amongst its objectives a conscious realisation of the integral character of our actions as linguists and academics, originating in the political, interactive and social natures of our linguistic experience

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study consists in clarifying the importance of the perlocutionary act to think about communication in general. It will begin with an analysis of the texts of John Austin, the founder of speech-act theory, to gain a clear understanding of this act, especially in its difference with the standard theory formalized by John Searle. This understanding will prove that it is this act which can theorize communication, for it is fundamentally asymmetric and characterized by eventual misunderstandings among agents in communication, which precisely defines the perlocutionary act. After determining this act, it will examine the works of Jürgen Habermas, Pierre Bourdieu and Jacques Derrida. Although they are not, strictly speaking, speech-act theorists, and their relation with this theory is never simple or favorable, their arguments, even their criticisms, are indispensable, insofar as our attempt is to propose a speech-act theory based on the perlocutionary act, which has been almost entirely neglected by its standard theory. This perlocutionary-act theory, which is no longer a speech-act theory, will allow us to problematize communication in general, or even tele-communication, which go es well beyond the communication practiced in a face-to-face situation. Speech-act theory will thus transform into a telecommunication-act theory

Abstract:
The main interest of this performative analysis comes from the fact that such a study involves the genesis of speech acts theory and its defenders (austin and searle) before the application of a syntactic analysis : chomsky's transformational generative grammar. Every linguistic or extra-linguistic characteristic is maintained in order to extract all the information which allow an exhaustive understanding and interpretation of the performative. It follows that from such a syntactic analysis emerges three different speech acts classifications : austin's searle's, and ballmer and brennenstuhl's, and also a study of the role of the completiviser at the performative level ; besides, the use of many different linguistic fields reveals the existence of two other types of performatives : conditional performatives and engendred performatives

A period of nine years - from 1878 to 1887 - and three hundred and fifty-nine authors were needed to carry out the publishing of the "Dictionnaire de pédagogie et d'instruction primaire"by F. Buisson which, once completed, had a total of 5600 pages in four volumes. Having become, from 1879 on, the unofficial mouthpiece of the republican educational policy, it has continually been increased in size during its publication. But at the same time, these circumstances have caused the resignation of collaborators unfavourable to the process of secularizing primary instruction and correlatively, from 1882 on, the disappearance of mentions of denominational education or of catholic and counter-revolutionary historiography from the work, can be noted. Consequently, it was while being published that it attained a doctrinal coherence, achieved through the principles of undenominationalism of public instruction and of a broad pedagogy for children from the working classes. The publication in 1911 of a nouveau dictionnaire de pédagogie will put the finishing touches to the process of secularizing the dictionary

Abstract:
Elsie Clews Parsons (1874-1941) and her husband Herbert Parsons (1869-1925) present a very different pattern of conflict and accommodation in a marriage shaped by the wife’s determination to work. Both Elsie and Herbert came from wealthy and prominent New York families. When they married in 1900, after a six-year courtship, Elsie was an atheist, a feminist, and a social rebel who openly challenged female stereotypes and traditional roles. A Ph.D. in sociology, she was teaching at Barnard College and insisted on keeping her job. Herbert, a deeply religious and rather staid man, was a successful lawyer and politician. Although Elsie and Herbert seemed mismatched, I argue, in contrast to other of Elsie’s biographers, that their marriage was a love match. Their troubles began after Herbert was elected to Congress in 1904. Elsie gave up her teaching job, moved to Washington with their two children, and had four more children (two died shortly after birth). When the controversial views she espoused in her first book set off a public furor that offended and embarrassed Herbert, she stopped publishing under her own name. A few years later, she was wracked with jealousy when she thought he had fallen in love with another woman. Elsie and Herbert did not divorce, but they led increasingly separate lives after they returned to New York in 1911. Elsie organized her personal and domestic life around two new careers. After establishing a foothold in the feminist, bohemian intellectual world in Greenwich Village, she became a sought-after, influential social critic, writing for The Masses and The New Republic. Then she connected with Franz Boas’s professional circle and became a highly respected anthropologist, studying indigenous peoples in the American Southwest, the Caribbean, and South America. Elsie had two lengthy love affairs, with the architect Grant LaFarge, and the novelist Robert Herrick. She deliberately chose lovers who – unlike Herbert – were adventurous, interested in her work, and eager to travel with her. In the late teens and twenties, her relationship with Herbert gradually improved, in part because he took on more responsibility for their four surviving children. His unexpected death in 1925, while she was involved with Herrick, was a blow for Elsie. Deeply in love with Elsie, Herrick wrote about her in several novels and short stories in the 1920s. Initially supportive of her work, he became increasingly jealous of her success and deeply angry at being reduced to what he thought was a subordinate role in her life. His last book about her, published in 1932, several years after their affair ended, cruelly disparaged her and her work. Elsie was repeatedly disappointed by the men in her life, but she never stopped trying to implement her feminist vision of a more equitable and intimate relationship grounded in work rather than domestic life.

Abstract:
Die Aktion was a review of radical politics and culture published by Franz Pfemfert (1879–1954) in Berlin from 1911 to 1932. During the period of its greatest influence before the First World War, Die Aktion offered a home to the Expressionist movement and had a weekly circulation of 7,000. The journal functioned as a locus of pacifist opposition during the war but lost its earlier status when Pfemfert renounced Expressionism and turned Die Aktion into a vehicle of anarchist socialism in the 1920s.

Abstract:
Abstract Gustave Malecot was born on 28 December 1911 at La Grande Croix (Loire), near Saint-Etienne, in a Protestant family. His tastes carried him towards philosophy, Latin and mathematics. In October 1932, he entered the prestigious Ecole Normale Superieure on Ulm street in Paris. He attended lectures of famous mathematicians such as Emile Borel, Elie Cartan, Maurice Frechet and Georges Darmois. In 1935, he completed his course of academic studies and came out second in the ’Agregation de mathematiques’. His taste for applied mathematics brought him closer to Georges Darmois, who retained him in Paris from 1935 to 1939 and proposed the subject of his thesis. From 1940 to 1942 he was an instructor of mathematics at the high school in Saint Etienne, from 1940 to 1944, lecturer in mathematics at the University of Montpellier, and from 1944 to 1981, Professor of mathematics at the University of Lyon.

Abstract Paul Hoffmann was born on 1July 1884 in Dorpat, Estonia, where his father was a professor of internal medicine.1 He studied medicine at the universities of Leipzig, Marburg, and Berlin, and in 1911 he was appointed assistant to Max von Frey (1852-1932) at the physiology institute ofWiirzburg University, where he mostly investigated muscle potentials and reflexes. During World War I he worked in several German field hospitals in France and later at a military hospital in Wurzburg,, where he wrote the reports about the sign that was later named after him.2•3 In 1920 he was the first to describe the reflex which can be obtained by electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves, the so-called H (or Hoffmann) reflex. He can be regarded as the founder of modern German neurophysiology.
