Abstract:
U.S.food prices surged abruptly higher in 1910–1913, alarming urban consumers, who equated them with the high cost of living, but delighting farmers. Progressive reformers tackled detailed aspects of the food-price problem but had no overarching solution and no effective programs t o please both consumers and farmers. A volatile pattern of economic voting resulted, but unlike conventional models, it had countervailing tendencies, setting consumers against food producers. Food prices cost the Republicans heavily in the 1910 election and helped disrupt the party by 1912, ending the Republican “system of 1896.” In power, Democrats pursued primarily a southern-tinged agrarian agenda and narrowly preserved power through 1914 and 1916 but fell victim to interest-group conflicts in 1918 and economic disasters in 1920.

Abstract:
In this study, two genera of Afrotropical Sesiidae, Tipulamima Holland, 1893 and Macrotarsipodes Le Cerf, 1916 stat. rev., are redefined and redescribed, the latter being resurrected from synonymy with the former as a valid genus. Both genera are confirmed to belong to the tribe Synanthedonini. The genera closest to Tipulamima are unknown. Macrotarsipodes is related to Macrotarsipus Hampson, [1893] from Southeast Asia and Lepidopoda Hampson, 1900 from Africa and Southeast Asia. The latter genus as well as Pedalonina are transferred to Synanthedonini. Uranothyris Meyrick, 1933 syn. nov. is regarded as a subjective junior synonym of Tipulamima. Checklists of the species assigned to Tipulamima and Macrotarsipodes are provided. One new species, Tipulamima hesperia sp. nov., from Guinea and Ghana and the previously unknown male of T. pterotarsa (Meyrick, 1933) comb. nov. (Uranothyris) are described and depicted. The following new combinations are introduced: Macrotarsipodes leptosceles (Bradley, 1968) comb. nov. (Synanthedon), M. pedunculata (Hampson, 1910) comb. nov. (Ichneumenoptera), M. sexualis (Hampson, 1910) comb. nov. (Macrotarsipus), M. tricinctus Le Cerf, 1916 comb. rev., Synanthedon malimba (Beutenmüller, 1899) comb. nov. (Sesia), Malgassesia ivondro (Viette, 1955) comb. nov. (Tipulamima), M. opalimargo (Le Cerf, 1913) comb. nov. (Sesia), Lepidopoda aericincta (Meyrick, 1928) comb. nov. (Aegeria), L. cyanospira (Meyrick, 1928) comb. nov. (Aegeria), L. dasysceles (Bradley, 1968) comb. nov. (Synanthedon), L. erythromma (Hampson, 1919) comb. nov. (Lepidopoda) (Synanthedonini), Chamanthedon auronitens (Le Cerf, 1913) comb. nov. (Sesia), Pyranthrene hypocalla (Le Cerf, 1937) comb. nov. (Tipulamima), P. nigriceps (Hampson, 1919) comb. nov. (Tipulamima) (Osminiini). Junior subjective synonyms are: Aegeria rubripalpis Meyrick, 1932 syn. nov. of L. rubripicta, Aegeria mercatrix Meyrick, 1931 syn. nov. of L. aericincta and Aegeria pyrostoma Meyrick, 1927 syn. rev. of L. erythromma. Lectotypes of Tipulamima haugi (Le Cerf, 1917), T. flammipes (Hampson, 1910) and Macrotarsipodes sexualis comb. nov. are designated. Clerodendrum paniculatum L. Abstract:
The essay is devoted to characterizing a trend opposed to the onslaught of contradictions, disharmony and various destructive influences brought along by the new century in the Russian musical art of the early 20th century. This trend was embodied in the composers’ turn to the humanistic traditions of the past, as well as in the constructive and positive aspirations of modernity. The desire to defend the principles of humanism was mainly associated with the spiritual values of the Classical era. In particular, the author provides insight into the formation of neoclassicism in Russian musical art starting with the late works by P. Tchaikovsky (the orchestral suite “Mozartiana” (1887)). Special attention is paid to the works by S. Taneyev (the cantata “At the Reading of a Psalm” (1912-1915)), N. Myaskovsky (String Quartet No. 4 (1909-1910)), S. Prokofiev (Symphony No. 1 (1917)), Z. Paliashvili (the operas “Abesalom da Eteri” (1910-1919) and “Daisi” (1919-1923)). As a result, it is concluded that the sphere of humanism and harmony, despite being hardly a central trend in the context of the musical and artistic process of the 1910s, was, however, undoubtedly significant, clearly reflecting the reaction to the deforming trends of modernity. The fundamental shift in worldview that occurred in the 1910s – the first half of the 1920s was expressed in the weakening of the considered trend, the growth of contradictions.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dr Stefan Szuman as a doctor in the German army (1914–1919). Biographical contribution The author reconstructs the biography of the Polish doctor, Dr Stefan Szuman (1889–1972), later a professor at Jagiellonian University (1928–1961) during his period in the German army (1914–1919). S. Szuman, who acquired the state right to perform the profession of doctor in the German Reich on 7 September 1914, as well as the level of medical doctor on 23 December 1914 at the Faculty of Medicine in the Ludwik Maximilian University of Munich, formally served in the German army in the years 1914–1919. He served as a military doctor on the eastern front in the fight against Russia (from January 1915 until April 1916), firstly in Mazovia and Kujawy, then in Volhynia. Later he served on the western front – from April 1916 until December 1917, on the border between France and Belgium. During the night of 30 November and 1 December 1917 he was heavily wounded in the leg during the Battle of Cambrai in the Nord-Pas-de- Calais region near Raillencourt-Sainte-Olle, next to Cambrai and Bouchain. For his service in the German army, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class medal (at the turn of 1917/1918). After his recovery in Aachen and Torun, he was transferred to serve in the military hospital in the citadel in Hannover (from May until December 1918). After 9 December 1918, he returned to Torun, where he stayed until 17 May 1919, working as a garrison doctor in the clinic of his father – Dr Leon Szuman, still formally an officer in the German army until 19 March 1919 as a citizen of Germany. On 20 May 1919, he was accepted into the Polish Army at the rank of captain in Torun, which was still inside the German partition. On 31 May 1919, S. Szuman illegally crossed the Polish-German border near Torun and succeeded in reaching Wielkopolska.

Elokuussa 1914 syttynyt maailmansota johti tieteen, tekniikan ja sodankäynnin järjestelmien lopulliseen liittoon kaikissa teollistuneissa suurvalloissa. Tieteellis-teknilliset kompleksit organisoitiin yliopistojen, korkeakoulujen ja tutkimuslaitosten varaan. Valtion rahoittamia organisaatioita 1910-luvulla olivat esimerkiksi saksalainen Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V., Britannian Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), ja Yhdysvaltojen National Research Council (NRC).

The acoel genus Anaperus was established by Graff in 1911 for Amphiscolops gardineri Graff, 1910, making Anaperus gardineri (Graff, 1910) its type species. Since then, six more valid species were described: A. tvaerminnensis (Luther, 1912); A. sulcatus Beklemischev, 1914; A. rubellus Westblad, 1945; A. biaculeatus Boguta, 1970; A. ornatus Beltagi, 2001; A. singularis Hooge & Smith, 2004. A seventh species, A. australis Westblad, 1952, is incertae sedis (Dörjes & Karling, 1975). The genus was placed to family Convolutidae Graff, 1905, until Dörjes (1968) erected the family Anaperidae on the basis of a distinctive male copulatory apparatus. Jondelius et al. (2011) returned it to Convolutidae on the basis of molecular–sequence data.

Between March and October of 1918, he was the Minister of Public Works in this period he acquitted himself very well on this extremely difficult mission. In the first elections based on the universal vote (November 1919) he was elected deputy, but later he refused to run again. He got involved in investments for the development of the national economy and was elected president of the National Bank. Due to investments and stock market speculations made by a few directors, the Bank went bankrupt. The rebukes of conscience led him to an honorable decision, so he decided to end his days himself.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the personal and creative connections between Ivan Bunin and the forgotten writer Stepan Semenovich Kondurushkin (1874-1919). Known cases of communication between writers are described in detail: correspondence, meetings, as well as their reviews of each other’s work. From 1898 to 1903 Kondurushkin worked as a teacher in the Middle East at the invitation of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society. In 1901-1902 Kondurushkin began to write the first journalistic and literary texts about the East. Bunin traveled to the East in 1903, 1907, 1910-1911 and 1913, to publish the first sketches of the future book Temple of the Sun - since 1908. Both authors carefully read each other’s works. The article compares the two-volume collection of stories by Kondurushkin Syrian Stories (1908-1910) and Bunin’s Temple of the Sun (1917). Both authors speak about the East in the words of sacred texts and model a certain mythological space, where they are not just observers, but also participants in the process - they experience the myth together with the acting heroes, and are also endowed with the ability to act within the myth. In addition, both authors are characterized by the exploitation of the metaphor ‘East is the grave’, in which the problem of ‘time’ as a category is leveled and reduced solely to understanding everything in the category of ‘space’. The history of the East after the time of myth does not exist for the writers, and therefore the East is ‘buried’ under the slabs of sacred texts. Special attention is paid to the representation of the image of Moses.

Abstract:
The taxonomy and natural history of the ant genus Crematogaster are reviewed for the Costa Rican fauna. Thirtyone species are known, and a key is provided for these and two additional species from adjacent regions of Panama. Species boundaries are evaluated over their entire range when possible. The taxonomic history of the genus is one of unbridled naming of new species and subspecies, with no synthetic works or keys. Major taxonomic changes are proposed, with the recognition of several polytypic species with very broad ranges and the synonymization of the many names associated with them. Crematogaster pygmaea Forel 1904, suturalis Forel 1912, ornatipilis Wheeler 1918, erici Santschi 1929, and chacoana Santschi 1933 are synonymized under abstinens Forel 1899; centralis Santschi 1932 under acuta (Fabricius 1804); aruga Forel 1913 under arcuata Forel 1899; ludio Forel 1912, armandi Forel 1921, inca Wheeler 1925, and cocciphila Borgmeier 1934 under brasiliensis Mayr 1878; parabiotica Forel 1904 under carinata Mayr 1862; brevispinosa Mayr 1870, minutior Forel 1893, schuppi Forel 1901, recurvispina Forel 1912, sampaioi Forel 1912, striatinota Forel 1912, townsendi Wheeler 1925, and chathamensis Wheeler 1933 under crinosa Mayr 1862; barbouri Weber 1934 under cubaensis Mann 1920; antillana Forel 1893, sculpturata Pergande 1896, kemali Santschi 1923, accola Wheeler 1934, phytoeca Wheeler 1934, panamana Wheeler 1942, and obscura Santschi 1929 under curvispinosa Mayr 1870; descolei Kusnezov 1949 under distans Mayr 1870; projecta Santschi 1925 under erecta Mayr 1866; carbonescens Forel 1913 under evallans Forel 1907; palans Forel 1912, ascendens Wheeler 1925, and dextella Santschi 1929 under limata F. This short exposition starts with a brief discussion of situation before the completion of special relativity (Le Verrier’s discovery of the Mercury perihelion advance anomaly, Michelson–Morley experiment, Eötvös experiment, Newcomb’s improved observation of Mercury perihelion advance, the proposals of various new gravity theories and the development of tensor analysis and differential geometry) and accounts for the main conceptual developments leading to the completion of the general relativity (CGR): gravity has finite velocity of propagation; energy also gravitates; Einstein proposed his equivalence principle and deduced the gravitational redshift; Minkowski formulated the special relativity in four-dimentional spacetime and derived the four-dimensional electromagnetic stress–energy tensor; Einstein derived the gravitational deflection from his equivalence principle; Laue extended Minkowski’s method of constructing electromagnetic stress-energy tensor to stressed bodies, dust and relativistic fluids; Abraham, Einstein, and Nordström proposed their versions of scalar theories of gravity in 1911–13; Einstein and Grossmann first used metric as the basic gravitational entity and proposed a “tensor” theory of gravity (the “Entwurf” theory, 1913); Einstein proposed a theory of gravity with Ricci tensor proportional to stress–energy tensor (1915); Einstein, based on 1913 Besso–Einstein collaboration, correctly derived the relativistic perihelion advance formula of his new theory which agreed with observation (1915); Hilbert discovered the Lagrangian for electromagnetic stress–energy tensor and the Lagrangian for the gravitational field (1915), and stated the Hilbert variational principle; Einstein equation of GR was proposed (1915); Einstein published his foundation paper (1916). Subsequent developments and applications in the next two years included Schwarzschild solution (1916), gravitational waves and the quadrupole formula of gravitational radiation (1916, 1918), cosmology and the proposal of cosmological constant (1917), de Sitter solution (1917), Lense–Thirring effect (1918).

Abstract:

Abstract:
A revised catalogue of the Paleotropical Zalmoxidae including images of selected available type specimens is presented. Distribution data are provided to the best of our knowledge. The genera Acrozalmoxis Roewer, 1915, Camanastus Roewer, 1949, Papuastus Roewer, 1949, Savoa Roewer, 1949, and Zalmoxomma Roewer, 1949 are newly synonymized with the type genus Zalmoxis Sørensen, 1886. The following new combinations are established: Zalmoxis australis, Zalmoxis bonka, Zalmoxis insularis, Zalmoxis maculosus, Zalmoxis occidentalis, and Zalmoxis ponapeus. Bogania Forster, 1955 and Bunofagea Lawrence, 1959 are removed from Zalmoxidae and transferred to Phalangodidae. Gjellerupia Roewer, 1913 and Spalicus Roewer, 1949 are considered Grassatores incertae sedis. The incidence of preoccupied taxon names is redressed by designation of new specific epithets as follows: Zalmoxis neoguinensis (Roewer, 1915) is renamed Zalmoxis thorelli; Zalmoxis neoguinensis (Müller, 1917) is renamed Zalmoxis muelleri; Zalmoxis neoguinensis (Roewer, 1949) is renamed Zalmoxis mutus; and Zalmoxis minima (Roewer, 1915) is restored to Gjellerupia minima. Zalmoxis pallicolor Strand, 1910 is synonymized with Zalmoxis armatipes Strand, 1910. Diagnoses of genera are provided. Species richness and familial level relationships of Zalmoxidae are discussed.

Abstract:
A checklist of the 282 species of Arctiidae of North America north of Mexico is presented. The list reflects changes in taxonomy and additions to the fauna since publication of the Checklist of the Moths of America North of Mexico in 1983. Pagara Walker, 1856 and Neoplynes Hampson, 1900 are transferred from Lithosiinae to Arctiinae. Lectotypes are designated for Arctia incorrupta Henry Edwards, 1881, and Arctia incorrupta Henry Edwards, 1881. Two new combinations are proposed: Cisthene tenuifascia schwarziorum Dyar, 1899, and Trocodima fuscipes (Grote, 1883). Arachnis citra verna Barnes & McDunnough, 1918 is proposed as a revised status. “Afrida” exegens Dyar, 1922 is reported for North America for the first time, but its subfamily and generic placement are uncertain. Clemensia patella (Druce, 1885) is raised from synonymy with Clemensia albata Packard, 1864. Seventeen taxa are designated as new or revised synonyms: Arctia oithona Strecker, 1878 (= Grammia phyllira (Drury, 1773)); Arctia rectilinea French, 1879 (= Grammia phyllira (Drury, 1773)); Arctia conspicua Stretch, 1906 (= Grammia phyllira (Drury, 1773)); Arctia quadranotata Strecker, 1880 (= Grammia f-pallida (Strecker, 1878)); Apantesis sociata Barnes & McDunnough, 1910 (= Grammia f-pallida Strecker, 1878); Apantesis moierra Dyar, 1914 (= Grammia f-pallida (Strecker, 1878)); Apantesis mormonica Neumoegen, 1885 (= Notarctia arizoniensis (Stretch)); Arctia caja parva Rothschild, 1910 (= Arctia opulenta (Henry Edwards, 1881)); Kodiosoma otero Barnes, 1907 (= Kodiosoma fulva Stretch, 1872); Estigmene arizonensis Rothschild, 1910 (= Estigmene albida Stretch, 1874); Ecpantheria denudata Slosson, 1888 (= Hypercompe scribonia (Stoll, [1790])); Arachnis hampsoni Dyar, 1903 (= Arachnis picta maia Ottolengui, 1896); Arachnis midas Barnes & Lindsey, 1921 (= Arachnis citra verna Barnes & McDunnough, 1918); Arachnis apachea Clarke, 1941 (= Arachnis citra verna Barnes & McDunnough, 1918); Euchaetes pudens (Henry Edwards, 1882) (= Cycnia collaris (Fitch, 1856)); Arctia sciurus Boisduval, 1869 (= Cycnia tenera Hübner, 1827); Pygarctia albistrigata Barnes & McDunnough, 1913 (= Pygarctia pterygostigma Dyar, 1909); and Microdota hemiceras Forbes, 1931 (= Trocodima fuscipes (Grote, 1883)). Abstract:
For a short time (1910–1915), Alexander Scriabin could find like-minded adversaries of his art in the homeland. His bold works were enthusiastically discussed by critics during his life and afterwards. The article considers the reception of Scriabin’s image in Russian periodicals in 1910–1917. Also, how did the music community try to understand the composer’s work and fit it into a framework of ideas about art? In this context, particular attention was paid to the changes in opinions of the authors of the articles after Scriabin’s death and using the composer’s image to verbalize the aesthetic searching of the Russian intelligentsia on the eve of the 1917 revolution and after it.

Abstract:
AbstractCharles Frederick (Freddie) Hedges (1886–1920), his brother Elven Everett Hedges (1889–1931), and Jesse Jacobson (1882–1959) converged as Hedges Brothers and Jacobson in 1910 in San Francisco. Elven played piano, saxophone, and guitar, and all three sang and danced. In 1910–11, critics in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and smaller cities greeted the act as something new and exceptionally good. Instead of pursuing more general fame in North America, the trio accepted a music-hall contract in England, where they became leaders in creating a craze for American ragtime singing, a craze that prepared the English public for the momentous arrival of jazz after the First World War. The trio recorded eight released songs for Columbia in 1912–13. In 1913, they also performed in Paris and South Africa. In 1914, after eight months back in the United States, they returned to English success but soon dissolved the act and performed separately until 1919, when they reunited to accept an unprecedented contract (£30,000 for six years). Early in 1920, Freddie killed himself. Forest Tell (b. 1888) replaced him in the trio, and the new group recorded six released songs for Zonophone in 1920. The trio disbanded at the end of the contract. Elven retired shortly afterward, but Jesse stayed in show business at least through World War II.

This article aims to explore British traveler James Bryce’s political analysis of the Porfirian regime. In October 1901, Bryce visited Mexico and wrote letters to his family portraying his stay. Afterward, based upon his travel account, he spoke about the country in two conferences, one time in Oxford (1902) and another in Aberdeen (1903). Later on, he wrote about Mexico in his book South America: Observations and Impressions (1912), which was the result of his travels through Latin America in 1901 and 1910. We shall explore Bryce’s position toward the Porfirian regime, from disinterest in Porfirio Díaz’s despotism and the political elite in 1901 to admiration of its achievement of peace and progress in 1911 once the Mexican Revolution had commenced.

Begonia polyclada, a new species of sect. Petermannia from Luzon, Philippines is here described and illustrated. The new species is apparently allied to a group of Begonia in the Philippines with axillary inflorescences and numerous, relatively small-sized sub-symmetric, ovate to lanceolate-ovate leaves, i.e. B. aequata A. Gray (1854: 658), B. binuangensis Merr. (1918: 40), B. edanoi Merr. (1918: 314), B. gracilipes Merr. (1912: 405), B. lagunensis Elmer (1910: 735), B. sarmentosa L.B. Sm. & Wassh. Abstract:
The article concerns the final architectural and design activity of Hector Guimar (1867–1942), when he was forced to withdraw from his unique Guimar style. During this period, the sociopolitical and cultural life of Europe underwent fundamental changes. Bourgeois modernism was replaced by more laconic democratic styles (functionalism, constructivism, etc.). Not wanting to lose the professional orders, the French architect created projects with-out the former plastics and warmth. It is noted that before the World War II, he was mainly engaged in the design of multistorey residential buildings, occasionally, in decorative design of their facades and interiors, elements of technical equipment. His architectural projects of that period are residential complexes on Rue Jean de la Fontaine and Rue Agar (1910–1912), House Tremois on Rue François Millet (1909–1910), synagogue building Agoudas Hakehilos on Rue Pavee (1913–1914). Briefly considered the vicissitudes of his life after his departure to the United States (1938).

Abstract:
The following two-part essay will analyze critically four of the ten greatest controversies of Sir Winston Churchill's career that are based on the 2015 BBC News Magazine article of T. Heyden. Churchill, often referred to erroneously as an "opportunist", navigated his political career as a thorough pragmatist. The four controversies of his career are: a) Being “anti-union” during the Tonypandy Riots in 1910, b) Permitting the usage of “Mustard gas” against the Kurds and Afghans in 1919, c) Deploying the Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserve (“Black and Tans”) in January 1919, and d) Indifference toward the Bengal famine in 1943. These examples were selected randomly to reflect a balance of two foreign and two domestic incidents. In the second part of this essay, Churchill was often referred to as a “political amateur”when he withdrew troops at the Dardanelles Campaign of 1916. However, the following four documents support otherwise that Churchill's assessment that the campaign in the Dardanelles was "not a civilian plan foisted by a political amateur upon reluctant officers and experts". These documents are entitled, 1. Excerpts from Churchill's Resignation Speech- 15 November 1915. 2) Excerpts from a letter from Churchill to A. B. Law (Head of the Conservative Party)- 21 May 1915. 3) Cabinet Memorandum by Churchill defending his Policy of the Dardanelles Campaign- 5 August 1915, and 4) Communique sent to Rear-Admiral J. de Robeck (of the Dardanelles Campaign)- 1917.

In this paper, the type material of all five Japanese Paracis species (P. ijimai (Kinoshita, 1909), P. miyajimai (Kinoshita, 1909), P. pustulata (Wright and Studer, 1889), P. spinifera (Nutting, 1912), P. squamata (Nutting, 1910)), two Placogorgia species (P. japonica (Nutting, 1912) and P. placoderma (Nutting, 1910)), Pseudothesea foliata Aurivillius, 1931, and the type of the genus Paracis, P. orientalis (Ridley, 1882) are re-examined and re-described. The sclerites of the different species are depicted using scanning electron microscopy. All Japanese Paracis and related species treated here belong to four genera: Paracis, Kükenthal, 1919, Imbricacis Matsumoto and Ofwegen gen. nov., Pseudoparacis Matsumoto and Ofwegen gen. nov., and Pseudothesea Kükenthal, 1919. A replacement name for the genus Paracis as Neoacis is introduced because there is a senior homonym. A total of eight new species are described: Neoacis bayeri sp. nov., N. marianaensis sp. nov., N. ofwegeni sp. nov., Imbricacis foliata sp. nov., I. hawaiiensis sp. nov., Pseudoparacis tanseii sp. nov., Pseudothesea satsumaensis sp. nov., and Pseudothesea tokaraensis sp. nov. Pseudothesea foliata Aurivillius, 1931 is synonymised with Pseudoparacis japonica (Nutting, 1912). We have designated a lectotype for Paracis squamata (Nutting, 1910), which is now revised as Imbricacis squamata. Keys to the genera Neoacis, Imbricacis, Pseudoparacis, and Pseudothesea are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Although early proponents for each of the four basic articles of operating room clothing—gowns, caps, masks, and gloves—can be identified, it is unclear from historical commentaries when each article achieved general acceptance and was consistently worn by surgeons and by anesthesia providers. Methods Historical photographs were identified from the Web sites of the National Library of Medicine, Google, and the archives of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology for the 11 decades 1860 to 1970. The presence or absence of each article of clothing was then determined for the surgical and anesthesia providers depicted. Results Over 1,000 photographs were identified and examined. Photographs were then eliminated for repetition, lack of available dating, questionable dating, and poor quality. In 338 remaining photographs that met inclusion criteria, 640 surgical providers and 219 anesthesia providers were depicted and used in the analysis. Statistical definitions for historical terms general acceptance and routine use were proposed. The probability that a surgeon was wearing nonstreet clothes (gown) was 0.66 (95% CI, 0.22 to 0.93) in 1863. The years (95% lower bound to 95% upper bound) associated with a 0.5 probability for wearing cap, gloves, and mask were 1900 (1896 to 1904), 1907 (1903 to 1910), and 1916 (1913 to 1919), respectively. The years associated with a 0.5 probability that an anesthesia provider would be wearing nonstreet clothes (gown), cap, and mask were 1883 (1863 to 1889), 1905 (1900 to 1911), and 1932 (1929 to 1937), respectively. Conclusion Timelines for the adoption of each basic article of surgical attire by surgeons and anesthesia providers were determined by analysis of historical operating room photographs from 1863 to 1969.

Abstract:
In the 1910s, in the wake of the glorious decade of syphilography (1900–1910), the early health education films lay the groundwork for a pragmatic approach to the containment of venereal diseases combining (early) diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis. Realizing that WWI was turning into a durable military conflict, the French Army created a Cinematographic Section (SCA) in 1915 for the purposes of war propaganda and documentation. In 1916, secretary of war Justin Godard declared syphilis a “national public danger” and initiated information campaigns in military and civilian spheres. Conferences accompanied with film screenings were organized for all new military recruits, resulting in the production of a series sex hygiene films for military audiences characterized by a short, evocative and precise documentary style, contrasting with the romantic sex hygiene films aimed at the general public. This contribution examines the cinematographic origins of the instructional films for the military, as well as their evolution up to WWII and their influence on public sex hygiene films for civilians in the interwar period in France.

Abstract:
Rubus Linnaeus (1753: 492) is one of the largest genera in the Rosaceae and species of Rubus occur on all continents except Antarctica (Lu & Boufford 2003, Wang & al. 2013). Rubus is a taxonomically notoriously complex genus. Its species circumscription is complicated by hybridization, polyploidy, agamospermy, and lack of a universal species concept (Weber 1996), which has resulted in broad disagreement about the number of species with estimates ranging from 250 (Mabberley 1997) to several thousand (Jennings 1988). In the latest revision, published nearly a century ago by Focke (1910, 1911, 1914), Rubus was divided into 12 subgenera. Most of the species were classified in subgenera Rubus, Idaeobatus (Focke) Focke (1910: 128), and Malachobatus (Focke) Focke (1910: 41).

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to present the issue of girls’ education in Warsaw ideological magazines. The press titles selected for analysis were “Ster” (1907–1914), “Przebudzenie” (1909–1912), “Ziemianka” I and II (1908–1918; 1910–1918), and “Pracownica Polska” – “Pracownica Katolicka” (1907–1918). The article attempts to answer the questions: What issues related to the education of girls were raised in individual women’s periodicals? How were these topics described? What function did the press publications have? The analysis was qualitative. In this text, historical-pedagogical and press research methods were used. The article indicates and discusses the main issues of girls’ education published in selected women’s periodicals until the end of the First World War. The women’s publications represented various ideological positions. They are presented in order from most conservative to most progressive.
