It presents the speeches of lyceist students in the Maranhenses student periodicals from 1910 to 1930 in order to identify and analyze the appropriation tactics of the students expressed in the published news as well as to understand the school dynamics and representations about pedagogic activities such as methods, Examinations, forms of entrance, curriculum, evaluations that characterized the daily life of secondary education in the first republican decades and the students' demands on the problems and the precise demands for this modality of education. Therefore, this study is based on the bibliographical research based on the principles of Cultural History in authors such as Castellanos (2007, 2012); Castro, 2006; Chartier, 1999; Nóvoa, 2002; Barros, 2013, among others, allowing us to understand the History of Pedagogical Press, History of Maranhão Education, specifically Secondary Education and documentary research, in which we focus on the mapping and analysis of the vestiges expressed in the following newspapers: O Progresso (1907) ; O Brazil (1907); The Left-Handed (1912-1914); Excelsior (1914); The Student (1915); Lábaro (1921); Alma Nova (1929) and the Young Blood (1930). A study of the periodic educational press liceitas made it possible to understand the sociopolitical changes that sustained the production of the school media when exposing ideas that evidenced the republican period; The development of the country, the creation of schools and the implementation of innovative methods in secondary public education in Maranhão. It was contacted that the student writings constituted in a privileged channel for the exhibition and circulation of the knowledge and of denunciation on the lack of educational policies. In this way, we consider that the newspapers written by the students of the Liceu were configured as an important vehicle of identity and resistance between the ideal and the concrete lived by the students of this institution in the First Republic.

Full textThis relationships between art and design are affected by a lot of economic, social and industrial variations also important than esthetics modalities. Analysed under its induced configuration rather than autonomous, then design is considered like a real methodological way to understand the leading role it played towards art when the latter lost its mimetic part. In the same way, we analyse the three historical movements in our corpus (German Werkbund till 1914, the Bauhaus of Weimar and Russian constructivism till 1930), we have tried to indicate the most important theoretical structures that characterize these movements : place of artistic training in the plan of action of the Deutscher Werkbund ; relationships between art and craft industry ; the organicist permanent feature in the end of the nineteenth century spirit up to the twenties of the twentieth century ; the modalities of utopian philosophy and the community wishes of the first bauhaus. Russian constructivism for itself fitted an aesthetics of the intervention on the social and politic real to a revolution of artistic action. Constructivist artists were conscious of the distorsion of their pratics when they had to resolve the necessity to joint form and function, individuality and society, laboratory experiment and to stand the test of reality. The ability of art resistance to all socioeconomic shady deal implies above all efficiency of critical power of art to reality. It would be necessary to understand relationships between art and design in building mediations. The new borning link will be the design. If will permit to authentify the sense of the relation between artist and the world which he is censed to improve, without doing of this improvement the sense of the necessity of art. The condition and the nature of the artistic intervention on the reality will be signified essentially by the emergence of a disciplin "socialising" the act of creation. In this context, the artist's involvement to this new task seems be determinated by the "usefulness' degree of art and its capacity to he less contempluted than used

Full textWestern culture, in which creative women evolve, imposes restraints regarding their bodies, their mobility, as well as their access to knowledge and freedom of thought. Thus they are kept in a subordination suitable to an assigned sexual role geared to childbearing and rearing. These limitations touch creative women in various ways : in their biographies, as stumbling blocks to their development ; in the art world, as a social sphere reasserting the sexual hierarchy ; in messages reflected in the arts, powerful conveyors of the social order's symbolic foundations. The social order thus reproduced in and by the art world is here seen brought to confrontation with the lives and works of three twentieth century Western artists, Niki de Saint Phalle, Frida Kahlo and Diane Arbus, who testify to the transgression of the system that women must undertake in order to exist in the world of artistic creation
Marin, Laura. Paris 7, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA070080.
Full textThe Ph. D. Thesis The manners and the effects of the Neutral. Reading Blanchot in the traces of Levinas and Derrida aims at exploring the meaning and uses of a key concept in Maurice Blanchot's theoretical writings: the neutral, a notion difficult to seize and seldom discussed in recent literary theory. In Blanchot's view, the neutral is the fundamental ontological condition of literature, but to analyze his way of understanding it is a challenging task, since the neutral is impossible to tackle by means of a dialectic approach. In these circumstances, a direct conceptual analysis cannot but fail, and that is why I opted for a methodological reduction which enabled me to consider the neutral from an "oblique" perspective. The primary question my thesis tries to answer is therefore not "What is the neutral?", but "What does the neutral do?" (i. E. What are the effects it produces), and how (in what manner it acts). From my point of view, this strategy creates a double critical distance: on the one hand, the diverse consequences the neutral had in the field of post-war French literature and philosophy notwithstanding, it allows me to deal with Blanchot's writing, that is with the rhetoric it is based upon in both his fiction and his essays; on the other hand, my analysis of the place and reception of such a notion in Levinas' and Derrida's works allows me to understand and stress out the fold that critical insight, conceptual detachment and writing create in their thought, given their complex relationship with Blanchot's oeuvre

Full textThe present work, through the study of the "generation of 1907" member's trajectories, tries to explain how, counting with which resources and in what conditions agroup of rio-grandenses' politicians achieved, at the end of the 1920, to ascend to powerpositions in Brazil. We also defined the contours of the political game in Rio Grande doSul and Brazil in terms of the practices and resources that the agents that acted in it should possess to be succeed. From the parochial, regional and national levels, it was verified that this game was played as a dispute among mediators, that embodied positions reached through leadership on portions of the society that had in them its relationship channels with the juridical-political world.

Full textThis thesis deals with the works of film critic Serge Daney and Jean-Luc Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinema, which I will interpret on the basis of Maurice Blanchot’s notion of “critique”, Jacques Derrida’s notion of “supplément” and Michel Foucault’s concept of “commentaire”. I will argue that Daney’s texts and Godard’s montages function as criticism and commentaries that perpetuate a “supplement of cinema”. While Blanchot's criticism “completes” the work of art (in this case the film) by interpreting it, Derrida's supplement signifies a lack of meaning in the act of writing, Foucault's notion of commentary allows to go beyond the dimension of the singular work and to refer to cinema as a concrete epistemological object, a primary text ("the cinema"). According to Foucault the commentary repeats a primary text while preserving its inexhaustible potential of meaning. Based on this thought, I will approach Daney’s and Godard's works from a post-cinema perspective. In the digital age in which cinema has undergone various transformations, the meaning of the concept of “cinema” is constantly being re-evaluated. Unlike a general understanding of cinema as apparatus, place or specific medium, I conceive cinema as a text that constantly needs to be interpreted and supplemented

Full textThe social sciences which deal with the Maghreb were chiefly established in the context of colonisation. The present work proposes a semantic description of a recent phase of these sciences. Through a corpus based on four texts, the following prominent authors were selected: Charles-André Julien, Mostéfa Lacheraf, Pierre Bourdieu and Germaine Tillion. All of them experienced the transition from the colonial to the post colonial period. After a critical analysis of their texts, grounded on constructed interpretative trajectories, the dissertation establishes the continuity of some "doxical configurations" inherited from past forms of knowledge. Five types of rewriting processes are distinguished: geographic, ecological, nationalist, mediterraneanist and mythological ones

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the literary and political writings of Maurice Blanchot in the 1930s. It shows that certain political terms Blanchot uses — like "terror", "revolution" or "refusal" — belong to the political debate of non-conformists of the extreme Right. But, at the end of the 1930s, he uses these political concepts in the affirmation of the literary “purity” and specific force of the literature. This thesis thus clarifies the process by which Blanchot leaves the politics and extends, by his own literary writing, his philosophical and anti-psychological reflections on the human being; but this trajectory is not linear at all, it is rather in a spiral between the esthetics and the politics

Full textThe introduction focuses on Humphrey Jennings' (1907-1950) accomplishments, and what studies have been done on him, and how he is relatively unknown in France. The first part evokes Jennings' life, his literary and artistic engagements, including the crucial roles he played in the British surrealist movement, the founding of Mass Observation and his compilation on the Industrial Revolution, Pandaemonium. The second part is about Jennings the filmmaker. It begins with a short history of the British documentary film movement and Jennings' first films. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Jennings devoted himself to making propaganda films. Drawing from British tradition, these poetic documentaries had a profound effect on civilians and raised their moral. Today, they remain the most moving and true accounts of that time. Detailed analysis of these films follow. Jennings died accidentally in 1950. But his work is underrated. Some critics even believing his reputation to depend solely on the exceptional circumstances of the war. This thesis assumes the total of Jennings' work as poet, painter and filmmaker in order to establish his place as major artist of the twentieth century

Full textWhat is literature's approach to the event? How does literature produce and give testimony to events? The event is generally defined in this study as any occurrence, real or fictional, within a singular verbal work. The event is that which obviously comes about, yet in its very essence the event comprises a dimension of inexhaustibility, an unknown element that refuses perception and appropriation, and that constructs and depends on the creative engagement of the stylistic and fictional work. Reading Heidegger's later writings and discussing his reception by French thinkers such as Blanchot, Derrida, and Deleuze, my study defines the act of literary creation as a progression towards the event and, most particularly, as the experience of the un-happening element within the happening. As I argue, while the event incessantly acts in the literary work as an unprecedented call for absolute creation, literature offers the evasive voice and image of the non-place within the taking place. My study demonstrates how these theoretical premises may be applied to actual literary works by analysing Marcel Proust's and Louis Ferdinand Céline's air raid passages in Le Temps Retrouvé (1927) and in the first book of Féerie Pour Une Autre Fois (1953) respectively. In these passages, the experience of literature—as both an act of writing and reading—becomes the vital move of the event itself: the more one surrenders to the violent and impersonal corporeality of the event, the more the work becomes "the offspring of the event," as Deleuze joyfully remarks (Logique du Sens, 1969)

From the artistic careers of composers Alberto Ginastera and Camargo Guarnieri, this essay aims to analyze the consequences of nationalism and musical ―avant-garde‖ in Argentina and Brazil from 1930 to 1960. So, we will develop a focus compared between these two countries in a way that these trajectories can be analyzed in line with broader intellectual paradigms – including international ones - that ended up favoring certain aesthetic forms in different periods covered. We believe that the artistic options of Ginastera and Guarnieri are related to the musical past of their respective societies, hence the importance of discussing the Argentine and Brazilian cultural history, as well as the place and the strength that the nationalist movements and ―avantgarde‖ aesthetics forms found there
