Abstract:
Korney Chukovsky is a neglected figure in the story of the British reception of Russian literature. This essay attempts to recover his place in the complex networks of translation, criticism, and interpretation in the twentieth century by examining his three visits to Britain (1903-4, 1916, and 1962), his activities as an intermediary for British writers in Russia, and the British dissemination of his literary criticism. In his alternate guises as indigent newspaper correspondent, feted member of a wartime delegation, and recipient of an Oxford honorary doctorate, Chukovsky came to be both a key contributor to and a keen observer of British perceptions of Russian literature.

Abstract:
Tarekat [Islamic congregation] is always interesting to be studied, including the Tarekat Hizib that developed in the Islamic organization of Nahdlatul Wathan (NW). This paper aims to explain the development and exposes a system of tarekat education and understand the social capital relations involved in the NW organization. This study is a historical study which is carried out in four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. According to the study, the education system developed by NW combines the salafiyyah [An education system that condemns theological innovation and advocates strict adherence to shari'a and to the social structures existing in the earliest days of Islam] and khalafiyyah, in which on the one hand maintains the traditional education in pesantren [Islamic boarding schools], but on the other hand also follows government regulations in implementing the national education system. Meanwhile, tarekat relations in the tarekat education system become a social capital in the religious life of NW followers and shaping the characteristics and personality of the community as well as the spiritual messages outlined by the tarekat founders. During the period 1966 to 1997, it was the main period as well as the antithesis in changing the orientation of the spiritual life perspective among the NW followers which has been getting stronger.

Abstract:
A hundred thirty years after his dramatic death, António Soares dos Reis (ASR) remains a huge challenge for art history understanding and art criticism interpretation, since he has been seen simultaneously as “a Greek, […] a realist, […] a classical, […] and a naturalist” (Arroyo, 1899: 78). His major sculpture – O Desterrado – being “an existential work” (França, 1966: 454) escapes from the classic orthodox aesthetic analysis, standing apart from the typical sculptural work of late 19th century. Our hypothesis is that ASR art works like a Rorschach test, for the narratives referred to it, instead of unveiling its character, reveal the concepts and beliefs upon which successive art studies have been produced. No visual images are displayed in this text, since the aim of our study is to detect the mental images associated to the insights and models that art historians and other authors traditionally used to assess ASR’s artistic work.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This research discussed aboute the philanthropic practices that occurred in the Solo flood in 1966. The city of Solo and the surrounding area is an area that is often subject to flooding. This happens because Solo City is one of the areas crossed by the Bengawan Solo River, where Bengawan Solo is the longest river in Java Island. If at any time there is a significant increase in rainfall and for a long time, the worst risk caused is the occurrence of a flood disaster. One of the major floods that hit Solo City and the surrounding area was the flash flood that occurred in 1966. The incident hit six inner districts and caused considerable losses. The problem studied this time is how the philanthropic practices of the Indonesian people remain intertwined in the midst of unstable political conditions, because 1966 was a fairly crucial period. To conduct this research, the author used the historical research method. This method includes the selection of titles, data collection, criticism or selection and filtering of data, interpretation or interpretation of the data that has been obtained, and the last step is historiography or the stage of writing history. In addition to using historical research methods, the author also uses the concept of social roles as a theoretical basis in carrying out the research. The concept was chosen by the author because it is able to help the author in seeing how the role of each individual and group in the recovery of the Solo City Area and its surroundings after the flash flood disaster. The results of this reseach is explain how the flood disaster that hit the Solo region and its surroundings in 1966 could move a sense of humanity and empathy among the Indonesian people in the midst of unstable political conditions. Until the people of Solo City and also the surrounding areas who are victims of the disaster can bounce back from the slump caused by the flood disaster. The participation of the Indonesian people as a reaction to the flood event that hit Solo and its surroundings was able to restore the state of Solo City and the surrounding area as before. Abstract:
The war that brought together the hero Nahak Maroe Rai and Dutch troops in South Belu in 1900-1906 was an effort to protect the territory of the Wewiku Kingdom from Dutch rule. The purposes of this study are to describe (1) the background of the Hero Nahak Maroe Rai in the War against the Dutch in Belu God 1900-1906; (2) The Process of the War Between the Heroes of Nahak Maroe Rai against the Dutch in Belu God 1900-1906. This study uses the historical method which includes four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of the study revealed (1) that the background of the hero Nahak Maroe Rai led all the people of the South Wewikudi Belu Kingdom, Malacca Regency because the Dutch wanted to control the Wewiku Kingdom area; and (2) the war between the people of the Wewiku Kingdom under the leadership of Meo (hero) Nahak Maroe Rai against the Dutch troops occurred three times, namely the first resistance occurred in 1900, then the second battle occurred in 1903. In the first and second battles, The Dutch were successfully repulsed by Nahak Maroe Rai and his troops. For this reason, Nahak Maroe Rai is called by the people of the Wewiku Kingdom as a Meo (hero). In the third battle, in 1906, Nahak Maroe Rai died as a result of being hit by gunfire from Dutch troops; (3) the natural strength of the traditional house owned by Nahak Maroe Rai and the Wewiku people became a factor in the defeat of the Dutch troops.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the background to the banning of the Pikiran Rakjat Newspaper in 1965. The ban came after the government issued a regulation of requiring the press to be affiliated with certain political parties or organizations. This study uses a critical historical research method consisting of four stages of work, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study show evidence that in the beginning of 1965 the government banned the newspaper because it was considered too late to engage in political activity. At the instigation of Commander of Military Regional Command/Siliwangi, it was on 24 March 1966 that journalists represented by Sakti Alamsyah agreed to cooperate in publishing Angkatan Bersenjata Newspaper West Java edition. However, when it was not yet a year old, the Ministry of Information revoked the regulations on obligating the press to affiliate with the political world. It was on March 24, 1967 that Angkatan Bersenjata Newspaper West Java edition consequently changed its name to Harian Umum Pikiran Rakjat and was operated under the editor-in-chief Sakti Alamsyah.

Abstract:
This paper reviews five major revivals and four revivalists of colonial Korea and discusses key issues of the revivals. It has three aims: to search for a new perspective on the interpretation of the revivals of colonial Korea; to map a new lineage of the revivals; and to provide contemporary Korean Protestant churches in crisis with some issues to consider for their renewal. The conventional image of the revivals in the colonial period has been that they were ‘passive, otherworldly, and introversive’. This stereotypical image reflects the historical context of the nationalist or minjung theologians of the 1970s and 1980s. They criticised contemporary mass revival meetings for their orientation toward emotionalism, individual salvation and prosperity, church-centred growth and dispensationalism. They argued that ahistorical revivalists were actually supporting the dictatorial government by depoliticising the churches. Yet a revised interpretation began to emerge from the late 1980s. And the first centennial of the 1907 P'yŏngyang Revival in 2007 has produced heated debates on its historical meaning for the renewal of a declining church. This paper emphasises the positive side – the nationalistic, reformative and indigenous elements of revivalism – without ignoring the negative legacy. I discuss Yi Tonghwi's revival in Hamgyŏng province and East Manchuria in 1908–11 as a development of the first revival of 1903–7. And I will identify the influence of Daoism, rather than that of shamanism, on the revivalists.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: A famous literary critic and writer, representative of the “Moloda Muza” group, B. Lepky was published in numerous Ukrainian and foreign journals in the early twentieth century. Today, his cooperation with Polish and German editions has been partially explored, but the Czech direction remains almost unclear. There are only individual references to B. Lepky's cultural publications in the “Slovanský přehled” journal in the works of V. Doroshenko, V. Lev, B. Rubchak. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to analyze the interpretative bases of B. Lepky's publications in “Slovanský přehled”, namely, five annual reviews of Ukrainian literature (1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1906) and three cultural pieces of knowledge: about the composer M. Lysenko, about the translation of short stories by M. Kotsiubynsky into Polish, and the scientific works of M. Hrushevsky, B. Barvinsky and V. Shchurat. Results: B. Lepky followed I. Franko in editing “Slovanský přehled” journal. I. Franko prepared the ground for the Czechs to familiarize them with Ukrainian literature. In a series of annual reviews, B. Lepky considered Ukrainian literature in the pan-European context, translating the realities of national culture into the language of universal cultural concepts. Not contradicting realism and modernism, the critic appraised the high artistic value of the works by Lesya Ukrainka, V. Stefanyk, M. Kotsyubynsky, O. Kobylyanska, which were marked by modern stylistic trends. Trying to convey the original content to the foreign reader, B. Lepky approached his critical speech to the poetic one, painting it with impressionistic strokes and symbolic imagery. The author concluded that the importance of B. Lepky’s Czech publications was important for understanding the ways in which Ukrainian writing was modernized and contextualized in Slavic and pan-European culture in the early twentieth century. Key words: Modernism period, literary process, critical writing, literary review, review, contextualization, impressionism, symbolism.

Abstract:
The first fossils from Antarctica were collected from Seymour Island in December 1892, during the voyage of the Jason under Captain C.A. Larsen. The Swedish South Polar Expedition of 1901–1903, led by Otto Nordenskjöld, proved that there were extensive deposits of fossiliferous Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rock in the James Ross Island area. This was confirmed by later geological mapping (Bibby 1966). Subsequent investigations have led to the establishment of various lithostratigraphic schemes (e.g. Ineson et al. 1986), and interpretation of the sedimentary history in terms of basin evolution (Elliot 1988, Macdonald et al. 1988). Unfortunately, different names have been proposed for the depositional basin, with consequent confusion. The purpose of this note is to review previous usage and propose a new consistent nomenclature for the sedimentary basins east of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Feenstra, Robin E. (Robin Edward) 1972. "Modern noise : Bowen, Waugh, Orwell." Thesis, McGill University, 2008. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=115604.

Full text
Abstract:
The modern soundscape buzzes with noise. In the 1930s, telephones, radios, and gramophones filled domestic spaces with technological noise, while crowds shouting in the streets created political clamour. During the war in the 1940s, bombs and sirens broke through buildings and burst through consciousness. This dissertation examines the response of three British modernist writers to the cultural shifts brought about by technology and politics, which altered everyday experience and social relations. Elizabeth Bowen, Evelyn Waugh, and George Orwell represent noise in their fiction and nonfiction as a trope of power. Noise, as a palpable emblem of discontent and the acoustic unconsciousness of the period, infiltrates sentences and rearranges syntax, as in the invention of Newspeak in Nineteen Eight-Four. Noise cannot leave listeners in a neutral position. The "culture racket" of the 1930s and 1940s required urgent new ways of listening and listening with ethical intent.
Chapter One provides a reading of Elizabeth Bowen's audible terrains in her novels of the 1930s, where silences and sudden noises intrude on human lives. In Bowen's novels, technological noise has both comedic and tragic consequences. Chapter Two examines noise as a political signifier in The Heat of the Day, Bowen's novel of the blitz. Chapter Three takes up the significance of the culture racket to Evelyn Waugh's novels and travel writing of the 1930s; noise assumes a disruptive, if highly comedic, value in his works, an ambiguity that expresses what it means to be modern. Chapter Four examines Waugh's penchant for satirizing the phoneyness of contemporary culture---its political vacillations---especially in Put Out More Flags, set during the Second World War. Chapter Five considers Orwell's engagement with the emerging social and political formations amongst working, racial, and warring classes in the 1930s. Documenting noise in his reportage, Orwell sounds alarms to alert readers to the mounting social and political crises in his realist novels of the decade. Chapter Six argues that Orwell's final two novels of the 1940s, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, represent the politics of noise in as much as they announce the noise of politics in totalitarian futures. Noise demarcates the insidiousness of propaganda as it screeches from telescreens, the keynote in Big Brother's ideological symphony of domination. Noise, throughout Orwell's writing, signifies the struggle for power. In its widest ramifications, noise provides an interpretive paradigm through which to read Bowen's, Waugh's, and Orwell's fiction and non-fiction, as well as modernist texts generally.

Abstract:
Joseph Breitbach began publishing literature in the late twenties. He came to occupy a specific place in the literary period generally called New Objectivity. The goal of this thesis is to define that place more closely. The first chapter analyzes Breitbach's early stories, whose themes are based on the new social reality of his time. The focus is on the organized workers of the far left (the proletarians), as well as the growing class of small clerks known as the petite bourgeoisie. Breitbach, a department store manager, crafted his fictional characters from this milieu and portrayed both their social problems and everyday life from his observations.
The second chapter illustrates a decisive change in Breitbach's emphasis. In the novel Die Wandlung der Susanne Dasseldorf, which unfolds during the Allied occupation following the First World War, he juxtaposes the two fundamental classes, proletariat and bourgeoisie. Breitbach maintains a place among the writers of the New Objectivity for his retrospective of the postwar period as well as his contemporary portrayal of the lower classes.
The thesis also discusses Breitbach's progressive thinking in his treatment of the female character in his novel and the now almost forgotten German-American relations in the occupied region of Coblenz.

This Master's thesis proposes to examine the place of space in five works by Andre Breton which are: Nadja (1928); Les Vases communicants (1932); L'Amour fou (1937); Arcane 17 (1945); Martinique charmeuse de serpents (1948). The first chapter of this thesis deals with the problem of space and its definitions through a sequence of seven authors who propose different perspectives. The second chapter explores the literary, the imaginary and the textual spaces in the aforementionned works while taking into account numerous surrealist concepts proposed by Breton.

Abstract:
Axmatova wrote the poem Primorskij park Pobedy in 1950 for Slava miru, a collection of verses that glorified Stalin. This poem was included in all her books that were published before her death (1966), apparently to please her censors. A few specialists that are trying today to establish a canonical and definitive version of her poetical works believe that Primorskij park Pobedy cannot be treated as a real Axmatova poem. The exclusion of a "parasitical" element seems unjustified if we conceive Axmatova's poetical works not as a complete Book, that is a definite and homogenous whole, but as a variable unity with undetermined limits.
When we read Primorskij park Pobedy through an intertextual network, the superficial meaning of the poem cracks and collapses. The text becomes open: under a trivial and official meaning is concealed an infinity of possible meanings. Our thesis explores this polysemy by showing how Axmatova's poem can generate a system of intertextual relations.

Cobill, Brenda. "A study of the relationship between Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin." Thesis, McGill University, 1994. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=22576.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a critical analysis of the literature concerning the relationship, both artistic and personal, between Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin. It proceeds from the popular belief that Cezanne harbored an excessive amount of ill will towards Gauguin. Examination of the sources upon which this belief is based prove them to be controversial and conflicting, yet the myth of Cezanne's animosity towards Gauguin is still widely accepted, effectively obscuring the more positive, creative aspect of their interaction. In the assessment of this relationship, Camille Pissarro emerges as a pivotal figure because of his close ties to both artists. It will be shown that Gauguin found in Cezanne's art concepts which were germane to his own artistic practices and theoretical directions. The later Symbolist interpretation of Cezanne reflects the dissemination of Gauguin's teachings about the artist and reveals that, in some measure, Gauguin was responsible for the critical acclaim Cezanne was to receive in his final years.

Chandrasekaran, Ramya. "Hindutva Movement: Burkean Examination of Violence as Retributive Justice." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/26670.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the Hindutva movement as a rhetorical text to understand how it contributes to the rhetorical study of social movements. The Hindutva movement is a mass movement that has grown in influence and in number in the last thirty years and its final goal is to wage a battle to create a Hindu rashtra (nation) in India with a monolithic Hindu culture. The rhetorical texts of V.D. Savarkar and M.S. Golwalkar are analyzed with Burkean guiltredemption-purification cycle. These rhetorical tools provide an insight into the guiding question of this thesis: how Savarkar and Golwalkar use rhetoric in ways that justify and motivate audiences to accept violence in order to restore a Hindu Nation.

Abstract:
Woman is an ever-present image in the prose poems Nadja, L'amour fou and Arcane 17 by Andre Breton. While the image incorporates several autobiographical references, this is not the revelation. With textual recurrence forming a thematic, topical thread, the image is seen in its poetic, symbolic and mythical dimensions. Woman offers a surrealist poet a rhetorical gift. In these works the image of woman acquires symbolic value. It is identified with Nature in its cosmic, telluric reality, rooted in the unconscious in its oneiric reality. It is epiphanic in that it gives access to the Other's vision. To the poet it represents, to use Carl Jung's hermeneutic, the archetypal figure of the Anima. In its mythical dimensions, finally, the image calls forth the great visions of femininity: Muse, Sprite, Fairy, Elf, Virgin...

Abstract:
This chapter addresses E.R. Dodds’s papers on Greek tragedy. Despite everything that can be said in criticism of Dodds’s Bacchae, the book is a compelling masterpiece of classical scholarship. Its shortcomings all have to do with his approach to ‘the Dionysiac’. However, Dodds’s vision is fundamental to the reception of his work: its impact on readers, within and beyond the academy, is a cultural fact independent of the validity of his treatment of any particular work, phenomenon, or body of evidence. The chapter then considers Dodds’s 1960 article on the Oresteia and another article on Oedipus Rex. By both ancient and modern reckoning, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is among the greatest of Greek tragedies, and what would perhaps be generally acknowledged as the most satisfying interpretation of it was given by Dodds in his 1966 article ‘On Misunderstanding the Oedipus Rex’, his final contribution to the study of Greek tragedy.
