Abstract:
The aim of this work was to identify the introduced and cryptogenic species in encrusting and associated communities of hard substrates in Paranaguá Bay, Brazil, and to attempt to determine which of these species could negatively affect the local community to suggest management strategies for these species. At least four introduced species were found - a large number in comparison with other port surveys. These were the hydrozoan Garveia franciscana Torrey, 1902, the polychaete Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1902, the barnacles Amphibalanus reticulatus (Utinoni, 1967) and Striatobalanus amaryllis Darwin, 1854, all with potentially harmful impacts. Of the 33 cryptogenic species, four were also listed in the literature as causing negative effects. We propose the following management practices: periodic cleaning of all underwater structures, population monitoring of invasive species and potential substrates, an information database of potential sources of introduction.

Abstract:
An annotated catalogue of the World Tetralobinae (Coleoptera: Elateridae) is presented. Two tribes are recognized, Tetralobini and Piezophyllini. Altogether, 78 species are classified in Tetralobinae. Tetralobini includes 73 species in six genera: Tetralobus Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828 (52 species; subgenus Tetralobus 51 species, subgenus Dodecamerus Laurent, 1968 one species), Neotetralobus Girard, 1987 (one species), Paratetralobus Laurent, 1964a (one species), Pseudalaus Laurent, 1967 (two species), Pseudotetralobus Schwarz, 1902 (16 species), and Sinelater Laurent, 1967 (one species). Piezophyllini includes only Piezophyllus Hope, 1842 (five species). Most Tetralobinae are distributed in the Afrotropical Region, and several species are additionally known from the Oriental, East Palaearctic, and Australian Regions. For each taxon we provide synonyms, information on types, type localities, distribution, and bibliography. Sinelater perroti (Fleutiaux, 1940) is recorded from Bhutan for the first time.

Abstract:
Conflicting character evidence and a scarcity of male specimens has historically made placement of the spider subfamily Penestominae Simon problematic. The Penestominae was recently removed from the family Eresidae and promoted to family rank based on the results of a molecular phylogenetic study; a complementary taxonomic revision of the Penestomidae is presented here. Penestomidae contains a single genus, Penestomus Simon, 1902. The genus Wajane Lehtinen, 1967 was previously included in the Penestominae, and distinguished from Penestomus based on the lack of a cribellum. Wajane is, in fact, cribellate, and is here synonymized with Penestomus New synonymy. Nine Penestomus species are recognized: four species are redescribed (P. planus Simon, 1902, P. croeseri Dippenaar-Schoeman, 1989, P. stilleri (Dippenaar-Schoeman, 1989), new combination, and P. armatus (Lehtinen, 1967)) new combination, and five species are newly described (P. egazini sp. nov., P. kruger sp. nov., P. montanus sp. nov., P. prendinii sp. nov., and P. zulu sp. nov.). Male specimens are rare in collections; only P. egazini, P. montanus, and P. armatus are known from males, and only P. armatus is unknown from females. A dichotomous key to the species is provided. Data elements in this work have been disseminated across multiple electronic venues, including images on Morphbank, distribution data exposed through GBIF and explorable using Google Earth, new nomenclatural acts registered with ZooBank, and species pages on the Encyclopedia of Life. Where available, species descriptions include links to molecular sequence data on GenBank.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to explore the unique giftedness of the Swiss physician and mystic Adrienne von Speyr (1902–1967) during her childhood and youth. The following research issues are addressed: 1) the research method and biographical sources on von Speyr, 2) a holistic portrait of her, 3) her early years, 4) the three-ring conception of giftedness as a fitting theoretical framework, and 5) an exploration of Adrienne’s case using Renzulli’s three-ring concept. Case study based on a content analysis of biographical sources was the adopted research method. The context of the research is interest in Adrienne von Speyr as a woman endowed with unique qualities and a unique mission in the Church. This general interest inspired the research into her childhood and youth, when some of these qualities were already present. The argumentation process involved analyzing sources and citing content relevant to the theoretical framework. The research confirms von Speyr’s giftedness in her childhood and youth and delineates its characteristics. We can conclude that her early talents and gifts are in themselves worthy of interest and that they may inspire further research on her life and work in general.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The history of the African American community has been inexorably bound to the concepts of oppression, downgrading, racism, hatred and trauma. Although the association between racism and concomitant negative psychological outcome has been widely assessed, little work has been done to study the role of literature as a cultural means to promote resilience among this oppressed group. Langston Hughes (1902-1967) stands out as a novelist, poet and playwright, and is one of the primary contributors to the Harlem Renaissance movement. Following the framework of theories of resilience, this article analyses the representation of adversity and positive adaptation in Langston Hughes’s early stage poetry, and assesses his contribution to resilience among the African American people at a time of hardship and oppression.

Abstract:

Gorbunov (1998 – 2022), etc. To date, we have shown that basilar arteries are detected in embryos at 7 weeks of intrauterine development, posterior cerebral arteries with plexiform branching – at 8 weeks of intrauterine life, and persistent trigeminal arteries continue to be detected in prenatal embryos at 8-9 weeks of human prenatal ontogenesis. In prenatal embryos 7-8-9 weeks of prenatal ontogenesis, the basilar artery system provides the needs of the human intrauterine brain.

A new dwarf alestid from the vicinity of Inga on the lower Congo River, Bas Congo Province, Democratic Republic of Congo is described. Assignment of the new taxon to the poorly defined genus, Micralestes, is discussed and justified on the basis of available morphological character data. With the recognition of Micralestes schelly sp. nov., a total of six Micralestes are now known to inhabit the 350 km stretch of the Congo River from Pool Malebo to Boma near the river’s estuary. These are Micralestes acutidens (Peters, 1852), Micralestes humilis Boulenger, 1899, Micralestes lualabae Poll, 1967, Micralestes holargyreus (Günther, 1873), Micralestes stormsi Boulenger, 1902, and the new species Micralestes schelly. Of these Micralestes schelly and Micralestes holargyreus are considered herein as restricted-range endemics of the lower Congo River. Abstract:
This study explores the strategies employed by the Swedish Railway Council to influence national railway policy from 1902 to 1967. The Council was a corporatist arrangement and functioned as a broker between industrial and regional interests and the public railways. The results show that though the Council's policy influence in many cases was marginal, there were occasions when the members could use the Council as a tool to influence railway policy, most notably the division of the network into profitable and unprofitable lines, with different forms of government subsidies. The Council's influence increased through a shift in arguments, from a position that tariffs should be high enough to deliver a return on the invested capital, to an emphasis on having tariffs that could support national and regional economic development, even if it created commercial losses. When Swedish transport policy shifted in the 1960s, the Railway Council gradually lost its importance and eventually dissolved.

Abstract:
Successive translations of a text mirror the shifting translatory practices of a culture. Paradigms for/of translation can be tracked by following the trajectory of these translations. Usually, however, the “translative turn” is read off from the latest in the series of translations inspired by a text. It is the other way round with the translated Oriya novel, Fakir Mohan Senapati’s Chhamana Athaguntha (1902), which is an exception to this developmentalist rule. An early English translation of the novel titled The Stubble under the Cloven Hoof (1967), produced by C.V.N. Das, shows a highly visible and active translator. In this Das uses English to counter the Englishing tendencies that are the inevitable end result of his attempt, as he says, at “rechristening” a vernacular tale. This essay demonstrates this and also explains the related phenomenon of the foregrounding of the task of the translator.

Abstract:
In March 1898 Abbé Jules Dominique (1838–1902; Bureau, 1903; Fig. 1) published an account of the bees collected by Constant Bar (1817–1884; Oberthür, 1888) and his family in French Guiana (Dominique, 1898). Jean M. Pérez (1833– 1914) had identified both the new and known species reported by Dominique and provided Dominique with manuscript names for the new species. While Pérez never published any of the proposed new species (Anonymous, 1917), Dominique in his account of the collection included both the manuscript names and a brief description in his own words for several of these species. Michener (1987) pointed out the taxonomic implications of this publication, in particular the potential instability to nomenclature when rediscovering names which have not been used for more than a century. While Michener considered several of Dominique’s new names valid, Moure (1967) had incorrectly regarded all of Dominique’s species of Euglossa and Eulaema as nomina nuda.

Abstract:
Abstract In the article, the concept of landscape maps by Franciszek Uhorczak (1902–1981), Professor of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, was discussed. The maps constitute a cartographic illustration of volume III, IV and V of “Universal Geography” edited by Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (the National Scientific Publishing House) (Warsaw 1965–1967) – the first Polish small-scale landscape maps of the world. From the perspective of the 50s, an attempt was undertaken to assess the editorial assumptions, landscape typology and selection of cartographic means used by the author, paying special attention to the selection of colours representing landscapes. Also, issues raising controversies related to the degree of generalization of particular elements of the content, typology of landscapes as well as map details were indicated. The performed analysis leads to the conclusion that landscape maps by Professor F. Uhorczak constituted one of the most significant achievements of Polish thematic cartography of the 20th century, and they are an unequaled model also for the contemporary cartographers.

Abstract:
At the core of this publication are letters written by E. Livshits (1902–1987), the widow of B. Livshits, to her close friends: literary critic A. Deich (1893–1972), whom she knew ever since her Kiev days, and his wife E. Deich-Malkina (1919–2014). Kept at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, this epistolary collection spans over 20 years, starting from 1967. Along with accounts of private circumstances, each letter contains accounts related to B. Livshits, Osip and Nadezhda Mandelstam, I. Nappelbaum, A. Shadrin, and others. At the same time, E. Livshits’ comments and descriptions of people and literary works are very lifelike and fascinating. On the whole, the reader gets a picture of the period and certain literary process, viewed by a sophisticated connoisseur rather than squinted at by an aging disenfranchised widow of an executed writer. The publication is prefaced by P. Nerler, who collected and prepared the book of letters and reminiscences of E. Livshits, to be printed by Elena Shubina Publishers (AST).

Abstract:
Cognitive disorders have long assumed a central position in describing the pathognomonic characteristics of schizophrenia. Kraepelin's (1902) and Bleuler's (1911) uniquely innovative descriptions of attentional dysfunctions and associational loosening in thought processes laid the groundwork for the concept of basic disorder devised by authors who embraced a phenomenological approach to psychopathology in German-speaking countries (Huber, 1983; Janzarik, 1983), and for experimental research endeavours in English-speaking countries to identify a ‘core psychological deficit’ in schizophrenia (Lang & Buss, 1965). Recent research has identified specific information-processing deficits in affected individuals. These include (a) problems with elementary functions such as selective attention towards relevant stimuli and sustained attention over prolonged periods of time (Oltmanns & Neale, 1975; Nuechterlein, 1977); (b) problems with more complex functions such as encoding and recognition of familiar cues, storing information for future retrieval, or drawing deductive or analogous conclusions from available information (Broga & Neufeld, 1981; Brenner, 1983; Nuechterlein & Dawson, 1984b); and (c) problems with executive functions and response selection (Broen & Storms, 1967; Weinberger et al, 1986, 1988).

Th e poem provides the emotional and historical core of the “Migration” paintings by Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000), a series that depicts the extraordinary internal migration of African Americans in the twentieth century. Not coincidentally, the poem also provides the title of the current exhibition of the sixty paintings in Lawrence’s series, on display at MoMA, New York, from 3 April to 7 September 2015.1 Shown together for the first time in over twenty years, the paintings are surrounded by works that provide context for the “great migration”: additional paintings by Lawrence, as well as paintings, drawings, photographs, texts, and musical recordings by other African-American artists, writers, and performers of the early to mid-twentieth century.

Abstract:
When Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) was a medical student at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, she spent the autumn of 1901 constructing an anatomical model of a young human brain. Most accounts call it an “embryo” brain, although as we shall see it likely belonged to a fetus or infant. The assignment was her final opportunity to obtain the medical degree after failing four classes in the spring of her senior year. Her anatomy professor, Franklin Paine Mall (1982–1917), offered her a second chance to graduate if she would finish her brain model and write an accompanying manuscript. Stein eventually produced sixty-three drawings and “roughly twenty-five pages of text,” in addition to the model itself (Meyer 2001: 89). She submitted the work in January 1902, but Mall judged it as inept and threw it away. Stein set off for Europe, leaving medicine behind forever. She settled in Paris where she became an avant-garde writer most notably known for her book supposedly chronicling the life of Alice Babette Toklas (1877–1967), who was Stein's longtime lover, secretary, editor, cook, and companion. The book, published in 1933, narrated the life of the inimitable Gertrude Stein, although it was playfully titled The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.

Abstract:
A list comprising 236 species in the family Gelechiidae from the southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2007 on 21 different Finnish-Russian expeditions. The following new combinations are proposed: Caulastrocecis interstratella (Christoph, 1873) comb. n., Megacraspedus balneariellus (Chrétien, 1907) comb. n., Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867) comb. n., Megacraspedus lagopellus Herrich-Schäffer, 1860 comb. rev., Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926) comb. n., Scrobipalpa adaptata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n., Scrobipalpa dorsoflava (Povolný, 1996) comb. n., Scrobipalpa notata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n. and Scrobipalpa punctata (Povolný, 1996) comb. n. Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987 stat. rev. is raised to the species rank (from subsp. of N. sceptrophora (Meyrick, 1926)). Previously unknown females of four species are described: Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926), Monochroa nomadella (Zeller, 1868), Ivanauskiella psamathias (Meyrick, 1891) and Filatima zagulajevi Anikin & Piskunov, 1996. Trichembola neurophanes (Meyrick, 1926) syn. n. is shown to be a synonym of Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867). Three separate species complexes are briefly discussed: Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, Stomopteryx remissella (Zeller, 1847) and Aristotelia subericinella (Duponchel, 1843); each of them seems to contain unresolved taxonomic problems. Three species are reported for the first time from Europe: Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987, Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, and Anarsia sibirica Park & Ponomarenko, 1996. The following species are newly recorded from Russia: Apatetris kinkerella (Snellen, 1876), Catatinagma trivittellum Rebel, 1903, Megacraspedus balneariellus (Chrétien, 1907), Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926), Chrysoesthia falkovitshi Lvovsky & Piskunov, 1989, Metzneria diffusella Englert, 1974, Ptocheuusa paupella (Zeller, 1847), Ptocheuusa abnormella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Monochroa parvulata Gozmány, 1957, Eulamprotes plumbella (Heinemann, 1870), Aroga aristotelis (Millière, 1876), Filatima transsilvanella Z. Abstract:
Ludwig Edinger (1855–1918) is often perceived as a functional neuroanatomist who primarily followed traditional lines of microscopic research. That he was a rather fascinating innovator in the history of neurology at the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century has, however, gone quite unnoticed. Edinger’s career and his pronounced hopes for future investigative progress in neurological work mark an important shift, one away from traditional research styles connected to department-based approaches towards a multi-perspective and quite advanced form of interdisciplinary scientific work. Being conceptually influenced by the Austrian neuroanatomist Heinrich Obersteiner (1847–1922) and his foundation of the Neurological Institute in Vienna in 1882, Edinger established a multi-faceted brain research program. It was linked to an institutional setting of laboratory analysis and clinical research that paved the way for a new type of interdisciplinarity. After completion of his medical training, which brought him in working relationships with illustrious clinicians such as Friedrich von Recklinghausen (1810–1879) and Adolf Kussmaul (1822–1902), Edinger settled in 1883 as one of the first clinically working neurologists in the German city of Frankfurt/Main. Here, he began to collaborate with the neuropathologist Carl Weigert (1845–1904), who worked at the independent research institute of the Senckenbergische Anatomie. Since 1902, Edinger came to organize the anatomical collections and equipment for a new brain research laboratory in the recently constructed Senckenbergische Pathologie. It was later renamed the “Neurological Institute”, and became an early interdisciplinary working place for the study of the human nervous system in its comparative, morphological, experimental, and clinical dimensions. Even after Edinger’s death and under the austere circumstances of the Weimar Period, altogether three serviceable divisions continued with fruitful research activities in close alignment: the unit of comparative neurology, the unit of neuropsychology and neuropathology (headed by holist neurologist Kurt Goldstein, 1865–1965), and an associated unit of paleoneurology (chaired by Ludwig Edinger’s daughter Tilly, 1897–1967, who later became a pioneering neuropaleontologist at Harvard University). It was especially the close vicinity of the clinic that attracted Edinger’s attention and led him to conceive a successful model of neurological research, joining together different scientific perspectives in a unique and visibly modern form.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Iberian Peninsula is a global hotspot for bee diversity due to its large number of different habitats, particularly Mediterranean scrubland, mountains, and hot and cold steppe. In line with its status as a hotspot of bee diversity, the peninsula hosts a very large Andrena fauna, which despite progress in recent years remains incompletely studied, particularly with reference to genetic investigation. Here the Iberian Andrena fauna is comprehensively revised, resulting in a total of 228 recorded species. Numerous taxonomic changes are necessary following inspection of museum specimens, type material, and genetic investigation. The following subgenera are described: Pruinosandrenasubgen. nov., containing six taxa previously placed in the subgenus Campylogaster Dours, 1873, and Blandandrenasubgen. nov., Bryandrenasubgen. nov., Limbandrenasubgen. nov., and Ovandrenasubgen. nov., containing one, one, one, and four taxa previously placed in the subgenus Poliandrena Warncke, 1968. Andrena (Limbandrena) toelgiana Friese, 1921 syn. nov. is synonymised with A. (Limbandrena) limbata Eversmann, 1852. The current lectotype of A. (Micrandrena) obsoleta Pérez, 1895 was incorrectly designated by Warncke; the taxon differs from A. obsoleta sensu Warncke, belonging instead to a taxon within the A. mariana Warncke, 1968 complex. A new lectotype is designated for A. obsoletasp. resurr. from Algeria, and A. mariana solda Warncke, 1974 syn. nov. is synonymised with it; A. (Micrandrena) alma Warncke, 1975 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) mica Warncke, 1974 stat. nov., and A. (Micrandrena) tenostra Warncke, 1975 stat. nov. are raised to species status. Andrena (Truncandrena) abunda Warncke, 1974 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) lecana Warncke, 1975 stat. nov., A. (Pruinosandrena) parata Warncke, 1967 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) pauxilla Stöckhert, 1935 sp. resurr., A. (Pruinosandrena) succinea Dours, 1872 sp. resurr., and A. (Notandrena) varuga Warncke, 1975 stat. nov. are also returned or elevated to species status. A lectotype is designated for A. (Euandrena) lavandulae Pérez, 1902 sp. resurr. which is returned to species status, and A. (Euandrena) impressa Warncke, 1967 syn. nov. is synonymised with it. Andrena (Truncandrena) nigropilosa Warncke, 1967 stat. nov. is elevated to species status, and A. (Truncandrena) truncatilabris espanola Warncke, 1967 syn. nov. is synonymised with it as a junior subjective synonym. A lectotype is designated for A. (Melandrena) vachali Pérez, 1895; A. (Melandrena) creberrima Pérez, 1895 syn. nov. and A. (Melandrena) vachalisyn. nov. are synonymised with A. (Melandrena) discors Erichson, 1841, and Andrena (Melandrena) hispania Warncke, 1967 syn. nov. is synonymised with A. (Melandrena) morio Brullé, 1832. Andrena (Pruinosandrena) mayeti Pérez, 1895 syn. nov. is newly synonymised with A. (Pruinosandrena) caroli Pérez, 1895 and A. (incertae sedis) setosa Pérez, 1903 syn. nov. is newly synonymised with A. (incertae sedis) ranunculorum Morawitz, 1877. Andrena (Simandrena) cilissaeformis Pérez, 1895 sp. resurr. is returned to species status, and is the correct name for A. (Simandrena) breviscopa auctorum. Andrena (incertae sedis) breviscopa Pérez, 1895 is returned to synonymy with A. (incertae sedis) numida Lepeletier, 1841, and A. (incertae sedis) inconspicua Morawitz, 1871 is newly synonymised syn. nov. with A. numida. Andrena (Euandrena) isolatasp. nov. and A. (Micrandrena) ortizisp. nov. are described from the Sierra Nevada (Granada), A. (Truncandrena) ghisbainisp. nov. is described from Málaga province, and A. (Avandrena) juliaesp. nov. is described from Cádiz province. The males of A. (Micrandrena) alma and A. (?Euandrena) ramosa Wood, 2022 are described. Additional lectotypes are designated for A. (Plastandrena) asperrima Pérez, 1895, A. (Plastandrena) atricapilla Pérez, 1895, A. (Aenandrena) hystrix Schmiedeknecht, 1883, A. (Pruinosandrena) lanuginosa Spinola, 1843, A. (Notandrena) ranunculi Schmiedeknecht, 1883, and A. (Euandrena) symphyti Schmiedeknecht, 1883. Neotypes are designated for A. (Chlorandrena) boyerella Dours, 1872, A. (Notandrena) griseobalteata Dours, 1872, A. (Taeniandrena) poupillieri Dours, 1872, A. (Pruinosandrena) succinea Dours, 1872, and A. (incertae sedis) numida Lepeletier, 1841. Type photographs and diagnostic characters are presented in each case, as well as new dietary information for understudied species. Finally, an identification key is presented in order to facilitate future research on this hyper-diverse genus in one of their global diversity hotspots, and current and future research perspectives for Iberian Andrena are discussed.

Abstract:
Langston Hughes was an American artist, writer, and dramatist whose African-American subjects made him an essential supporter of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Langston Hughes was conceived on February 1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. He distributed his first lyric in 1921. He went to Columbia University, yet left following one year to travel. He proceeded to compose incalculable works of verse, writing and plays, and in addition a prominent section for the Chicago Defender. He passed away from this world on May 22, 1967. (Editors, 2014) When you were younger, has anyone treated you good or bad according to your behavior? Or do you remember any incident of your life in which you made a mistake and someone offered you a chance for changing your life? Langston Hughes' short story, “Thank You, Ma'am”, distributed in 1958, catches the two circumstances. Langston Hughes was a vital and productive essayist amid the Harlem Renaissance of the mid twentieth century. He expounded on African-American life and experience. Much thanks to You Ma'am is about what happens when a high school kid and a more seasoned working lady crash on a Harlem road. There are three major topics present in “Thank You, Ma'am”: Forgiveness and Empathy, the Power of Love and Trust, and Christian Charity. At the point when Roger first grabs the handbag of Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, she wrestles him and hauls him to her outfitted room at the back of a house. The peak of the story is when Roger does not leave.

Abstract:

Abstract:
An outstanding orthopedic traumatologist and military field surgeon, scientist and teacher, one of the founders of orthopedics in Russia, founder and long-term director of the St. Petersburg Orthopedic Institute (1906–1924), organizer of the first Department of Pediatric Surgery in Russia (1933) and creator of a large scientific school of orthopedic traumatologists, Professor Roman Romanovich Vreden was born on March 9 (21), 1867 in St. Petersburg in the family of a well-known otorhinolaryngologist, Professor Robert Robertovich Vreden. From childhood, Roman chose the profession of a doctor for himself, and after graduating with a gold medal from the First Classical Gymnasium in St. Petersburg in 1885, he entered the Imperial Military Medical Academy. After graduating from the academy in 1890, he passed the competition and left for further development of the specialty as an adjunct at the Department and Clinic of Hospital Surgery founded by N. I. Pirogov and led by Professor V. A. Ratimov. In 1893, R. R. Vreden successfully defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine on the topic: «On the etiology of cystitis», after which he was sent to Kiev, where from 1893 to 1896, he worked as a resident at the Kiev Military Hospital, headed the Surgical and Ear Departments there. In 1896, Roman Romanovich returned to the Military Medical Academy and received the position of senior assistant in the Hospital Surgical Clinic of V. A. Ratimov. In 1898, R. R. Vreden was awarded the academic title of Privatdozent. In 1902, in connection with the retirement due to illness of V. A. Ratimov, a competition was held to fill the position of the head of the Department of Hospital Surgery, but R. R. Vreden lost to S. P. Fedorov in it, after which he left the Department. In 1902–1904, he was a leading surgeon and director of the French Hospital in St. Petersburg and a surgical consultant at the Nikolaev Military Hospital. In 1903, R. R. Vreden was appointed an official for special assignments at the Main Military Medical Directorate. In February 1904, the Russo-Japanese War began and R. R. Vreden was sent to the Far East. In March 1905, Roman Romanovich returned to St. Petersburg, until 1906, served as head of the faculty surgical clinic of the Women’s Medical Institute. In July 1906, Roman Romanovich was appointed the first director of the first Russian Orthopedic Institute in St. Petersburg. R. R. Vreden can rightfully be considered the founder of operative orthopedics in our country. Such surgical interventions as arthrotomy, arthroplasty, arthrodesis, bone and joint resections, tendon and bone plasty, osteotomy, open reduction of dislocations and others were widely performed at the Institute. In 1911, Roman Romanovich was elected a professor at the Psychoneurological Institute and created the Department of Orthopedics on the basis of his Institute. In 1912, he organized training in orthopedics for doctors at the Clinical Institute of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, and in 1918, he created and headed the Department of Orthopedics at the First Petrograd Medical Institute. In 1925, the «Practical Guide to Orthopedics» was published, which summed up the 18-year activity of R. R. Vreden in this field of medicine. Roman Romanovich created one of the first and largest scientific schools of orthopedic surgeons in our country. Professor Roman Romanovich Vreden died in Leningrad on February 7, 1934 and was buried at the Smolensk Lutheran cemetery. In 1967, the Leningrad Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics was named after R. R. Vreden.

FEDORIAKA, Ludmyla, and Viktoria REVENKO. "LANGSTON HUGHES’S STYLE IN HIS STORY «ON THE ROAD»." 2, no. 44 (December 19, 2020): 439–45. http://dx.doi.org/10.24144/2663-6840.2020.2(44).439-445.

Abstract:
Langston Hughes (1902‒1967) is considered to be paradoxically one of the most ambiguous as well as under- standable writers of the American «Harlem Renaissance». His short stories as a key genre of his literary paradigm brought him a world fame and he is remembered now thanks to the peculiar author’s manner of writing. In this article the investigators deal with the problem of L. Hughes’s individual style, – a criterion, which, indeed, made this literary man a wide popularity among his famous contemporaries and future generations of writers. This constituent part of his creative work deserves a separate deep and detailed analysis. The authors of this article make an attempt to trace the uniqueness of L. Hughes’s style on the example of his well-known fragment «On the Road». As a result of the scientific work it was proved that the author widely used all stylistic levels – phonetics, lexicology, syntax and semasiology. On the level of phonostylistics the author of the story widely uses alliteration, onomatopoeia, graphon and italicized words which are helpful to demonstrate natural phenomena and to portray the main hero. From the viewpoint of lexicology, L. Hughes’s story is specific because the author prefers words of neutral and colloquial origin as he wants both to illustrate characterological features of Sargeant and to show the key addressee of the story. Here, we deal with the fact that L. Hughes wrote his fiction about ordinary people to be read by them, so, the choice of his word-stock is logical. Syntactically, the story «On the Road» is very representative as is considered to be suitable for realization the author’s goal. L. Hughes uses many stylistic figures in this piece of prose. Elliptical and nominal sentences, detached and parallel constructions, inversion, anaphoric sentences, repetitions, enumerations serve to reveal the main hero’s physical and psychological state. Means and devices depicting the imaginary background of the story are also presented in the text by the author. In this regard, L. Hughes uses epithets, similes, but they are frequently used in the laconic text of the story and create the image of winter and the destiny of the main hero. So, having explored stylistic peculiarities of the story «On the Road», the authors of this article came to conclusion that the author uses language media of all linguistic levels, he obtains the capaсity to combine them in a comparatively short textual space, and this combinability leads to the birth of a particular, extra-ordinary style of the author. One should take into account that this non-traditional manner of Hughes’s expressing thoughts also testifies about the fact that the usage of such style of writing is very powerful and appropriate to realize his global aim – to raise the racial problem, which was spread in America in the 30s, and which, moreover, L. Hughes was personally survived and, therefore, cordially sympathized himself. That’s why, in this story L. Hughes declares himself not only as a brilliant linguist but and as a convinced fighter against racism in the USA also with the help of his unique style of writing.

Abstract:
Karl Raimund Popper, the philosopher and methodologist of science, died on 17 September 1994 at the age of 92 years. Locke was a Fellow of the Royal Society, of course, and some other early Fellows, Boyle in particular, have a secure place in the history of philosophy. Whewell, an intellectual forerunner of Popper's (Medawar 1967), was elected in 1820 when the Royal Society was, according to a contemporary philosopher, ‘in a state of unstable equilibrium’; he was a mere 26, a lecturer in mathematics, and was to occupy the chair of mineralogy at Cambridge for some years before writing his exceptional studies in the history and philosophy of science. Whitehead and Russell were elected as Fellows for their mathematical work, as have been one or two more recently elected logicians. Popper is the only philosopher in modern times to have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society primarily in recognition of his philosophical achievement.

Abstract:
For the first time а complete correspondence between Leonid Zurov (1902 –1971), the writer of the Russian Diaspora, and Viktor Manuilov (1903 –1987), a famous literary researcher, is introduced into a scientific usage. The main theme of their letters is the problem of transferring to Russia Ivan Bunin’s manuscript and memorial heritage, of which Zurov became the owner. The publication clarifies the reasons why the long and hard negotiations ended without any success. It allows to define more exactly the details and circumstances of this case. The correspondence affects the names of many key figures of cultural life both of the Russian abroad and Metropolitan area. It characterizes those persons who actively supported the return of Bunin's legacy as well as officials who blocked the process. The material reflects the struggle of Russian writers, scientists, museum curators against the Soviet bureaucratic machine for which Bunin was always ideologically alien. It paints a picture of the public sentiment and the Soviet cultural policy of the 1960s. Some letters concern Zurov’s articles devoted to M. Lermontov as well as his work on the novel “Winter Palace”. The publication allows to clarify Zurov’s psychological portrait and to identify a number of significant episodes in the V. Manuilov’s scientific biography
