Abstract:
By 1900, composition as a university subject was already a century old. Writing instruction and the writing of regular “themes” were part of the university curriculum in the United States throughout the nineteenth century, with goals and methods perhaps best represented in Blair's Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres (1783), Newman's A Practical System of Rhetoric (1827), Parker's Aids to English Composition (1844), Boyd's Elements of Rhetoric and Literary Criticism (1844), and Quackenbos's Advanced Course of Rhetoric and English Composition (1855). Composition courses, usually required, are among the most distinguishing features of the North American version of university education. They represent a distinctively democratic ideal, that writing belongs to everyone, and a contract between the institution and the public—a bargain that, over time, made English departments large and central to the American university and to the American idea of an undergraduate education.

Abstract:
The portrayals of mothers and fathers in children's literature as companions, disciplinarians, caregivers, nurturers, and providers were documented in this research. The impact of time of publication, sex of author, award-winning status of book, best-selling status of book, race of characters, and sex of characters upon each of the five parental roles was assessed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and multinomial logistic regression techniques. A survey instrument developed for this study was completed for each of the 300 books randomly selected from the list of easy/picture books in the Children's Catalog (H.W. Wilson Company, 2001). To ensure all time periods were represented, the list was stratified by decades before sampling. It was expected that parental role portrayals would become more egalitarian and less traditional in each successive time period of publication. Male authors were expected to portray more egalitarian parental roles, and the race and sex of the young characters were not expected to influence parental portrayals. Award-winning books were expected to represent more egalitarian parental roles. Books that achieved the Publisher's Weekly all-time best-selling status were expected to portray parents in less egalitarian roles. Secondary analyses explored the prevalence of mothers' occupations, parental incompetence, and dangerous, solo child adventures. While the time of publication affected role portrayals, the evidence was unclear as to whether the changing roles represented greater egalitarianism. The race and the sex of the young characters significantly affected parental role portrayals, but the sex of the author did not influence these portrayals. While award winning and bestselling texts portrayed parents differently than books that did not achieve such honors, most did not provide enough information to adequately assess parenting roles. Half of the mothers who worked in the texts worked in conjunction with their husbands rather than independent of them. Over 10 % of mothers and fathers acted incompetently. The time of publication and the sex of the author was associated with the prevalence of solo, dangerous, child adventures. Subsequent implications and recommendations suggest the inclusion of stronger parental characters in children's books. Many of the parents are portrayed as inactive, incompetent, or neglectful. The concern is that children are exposed to these picture book portrayals during the primary years of identity acquisition.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical survey of Mauritian literature written in English between 1900 and 2000. It covers the four different genres of the novel, the short story, poetry and drama. It aims to place the writing produced over this span of time within the social, historical and cultural context of production. Throughout, I have used the Structuralist construct that authors can only begin to shape themselves into being as authors within the existing discursive literary structures which exist at a specific point in time. It is argued therefore that the strong imitative bent of most of the writing here studied originates from this structuralist determination of authorial identity. However, the authors show their originality by hybridising these discursive genres with alternative cultural influences, emanating from their specific socio-cultural and temporal location In this context I trace the effect of British Colonial Literary pedagogy, as it was developed for India and implemented in British colonies. This substantially contributed to shape the sense of English Literature for the first generation of writers of the novel and for poets. In addition, writers in Mauritius were functioning within a local context where language use was associated with ethnic appurtenance, thus English was appropriated to counteract the elitist tendencies of French and Francophone culture on the island. Thus caught between the elitism of French and the bias of English pedagogy, Mauritian writers in English have remained fairly fixated in conventional notions of canonical genres. This is applicable for all the three major genres: the novel, poetry and drama. It has to be highlighted though, that in the case of drama the forms which have wielded the greatest influence on the dramatists is European and American drama. But, as in the case of the novel and poetry, these authors still function within the same schema of imitation as they reproduce the genres. Innovation can be traced to the new writing of short story writers who have published in a series of anthologies since 1990. This is the focus of my last chapter.

Bannister, David. "Public health and its contexts in northern Ghana, 1900-2000." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2017. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/26656/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of the long-term political economy of public health work in northern Ghana, and of the contingent application of medical knowledge under different political regimes. Covering the period from 1900 to 2000, the thesis asks how the north and its people's enduring peripherality - defined in various ways - shaped the evolution of public health institutions and conditioned the state's attention to particular diseases. It assesses key public health transitions across the century, including the creation of the north's Native Authority health system in the 1930s, the entrenchment of church authority for healthcare in the 1950s, and the government's gradual cession of medical oversight to international organisations from the late 1960s, a process which was partially reversed in the late 1990s. It examines specific disease control programmes against sleeping sickness, onchocerciasis, and guinea worm, for what they reveal about the social history of medical work on the margins of the state, and about the political contexts for population-level health interventions. Colonial-era tsetse control inadvertently contributed to the serious prevalence of onchocerciasis in the north at independence, and this high prevalence of onchocerciasis made northern Ghana a focus of international health fundraising ahead of the WHO Onchocerciasis Control Programme, which began in 1974. In the urban south, guinea worm disease was substantially reduced in the early twentieth century, but in the north the disease only received concerted attention from the 1980s. In the historical literature on health in Ghana, there are few studies which adequately disaggregate the north and its particular experiences of public health work. Using sources from northern regional archives, the archives of the World Health Organisation, and interview testimony from government health officials and village communities, the thesis aims to make a contribution to this area.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references.
This paper comments on one of the real estate and financial world's most common adages: that real estate is a safe long-term investment that will perform equal to or exceed other common investments, particularly over long stretches of time. With data drawn from a wide range of primary and secondary sources, a repeat sales index of large (250,000+ square foot) commercial building sales in the Midtown and Downtown sub-markets of New York City is created to illustrate how these properties have performed as an inflation-adjusted investment from 1900 through 2000. It differs from other papers that focused on hedonic modeling of building attributes and locational characteristics or that created appraisal-, lease- or property-share returns indices. Although our findings were not statistically significant, appreciation is found to be rather flat over time, appreciating on average between 1/4 to 2/3 percent per year and mirrors the findings of Eichholtz 1997 and Eichholtz & Geltner 2002. This suggests that while commercial office properties may provide investment opportunities when purchased and sold at the right points in the cycle, it tends to under-perform other investment options when carried over time.

Abstract:
Abstract Addition of CaSi2 in steel melt leads to a decrease of oxygen content, an increase of the melt flow capability, an improvement of a metal ductility and weldability. For an estimation of CaSi2 and Si additions effect in conditions of thermal spraying composite powders were produced. A base material of these powders particles is nickel, nichrom and iron. CaSi2 and Si are additional components of the powders (3-12 wt. %). Plasma coatings produced with using of these powders exhibit high density and adhesion. The coatings structure has a high grade of microcrystallinity with a decreasing size of lamels. Oxides content in the coatings decreases with an increasing of CaSi2 and Si content in the composite powders, moreover this effect is more essential in case of CaSi2 addition. Addition of CaSi2 and Si to Ni-base coatings increases a microhardness from 1900-2000 MPa to 2200-2850 MPa. In case of NiCr-base coatings this increasing is from 1800-2100 MPa to 2400-3500 MPa.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, effect of mass flow rate and inlet temperature on the thermal performance of a packed bed latent heat thermal energy storage has been numerically investigated. As the Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF), hot air is selected. Pure silicon is chosen as the PCM (Phase Change Material). The thermal performance has been evaluated on the basis of the following parameters: total heat transferred (Qcharging), TES charging rate (p), TES density (q), TES rate density (w). The values of these parameters have been calculated and compared for four different mass flow rates (0.08 Kg/s, 0.1 Kg/s, 0.12 Kg/s, 0.15 Kg/s) and four different inlet temperatures (1800 K, 1900 K, 2000 K, 2100 K) of the HTF for a charging period of 500 s. The simulations reveal a 0.54% increase per 1% increase in HTF mass flow rate and 15.6% increase per 1% increase in HTF inlet temperature in values of all the parameters after the charging period. A conclusion can be drawn that the HTF inlet temperature has more impact on the performance of packed bed latent heat thermal energy storage than HTF mass flow rate.

Abstract:
Valencian old town –locally called Ciutat Vella- suffered a huge transformation along 20th century. In was almost the whole city in 1900, and became less than 5% of the urban area in 2000. There was not only a process of architectural replacement, but a complete series of plans trying to update the historic spaces. There were three specific stages for those town planning proposals, made by public administrations but not always as public execution. The first group was developed at the beginning of the century following hygienic principles, with public both planning and execution. A second group, in the middle of that time, collected a series of punctual urban corrections and a huge new urban axis -Avenida del Oeste-; all these specially built by private investors. The third, final group of interventions occurred after Bologna protections principles, and the specific treatment of degraded areas into city centre. In this last, the most recent interventions can be studied the hard influence of previous urban fabric in the process of creating new urban spaces. Both historic slots’ and blocks’ geometry provide the definition for further street sections; but, in the other hand, those new street edges must be geometrically balanced with the possibility of construction of the new buildings behind them: structural geometries and functional measures must be attended. So, in this paper a series of clarifying samples are shown about the processes of public urban renewal implementation built in Valencia along the last third of 20th century.

Abstract:
Abstract Magnetic wellbore positioning depends on an accurate representation of the Earth's magnetic field, where the borehole azimuth is inferred by comparing the magnetic field measured-whiledrilling (MWD) with a geomagnetic reference model. Therefore, model accuracy improvements reduce the position uncertainties. An improved high-resolution model describing the core, crustal and external components of the magnetic field is presented, and it is validated with anindependent set of measurements. Additionally, we benchmark it against other high-resolution geomagnetic models. The crustal part of the improved high-definition model is based on NOAA/NCEI's latest magnetic survey compilation "EMAG2v3" which includes over 50 millionnew observations in several parts of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico and Antarctica, and does not rely on any prior information from sea-floor geology, unlike earlier versions. The core field part of the model covers years 1900 through 2020 andis inferred from polar-orbiting satellite data as well as ground magnetic observatory data. The external field part is modelled to degree and order 1 for years 2000 through 2020. The new model has internal coefficients to spherical harmonic degree and order 790, resolving magnetic anomalies to approximately 51 km wavelength at the equator. In order to quantitatively assess its accuracy, the model was compared with independent shipborne, airborne and ground magnetic measurements. We find that the newmodel has comparable or smaller errors than the other models benchmarkedagainst it over the regions of comparisons. Additionally, we compare theimproved model against magnetic datacollected from MWD; the residual error lies well within the accepted industry error model, which may lead tofuture error model improvements.

Abstract:
Abstract In high-speed machining of hard materials, tools with chamfered edges and tool materials resistant to diffusion wear are commonly used. In this paper, the influence of cutting edge geometry on the chip removal process is studied through numerical simulation of cutting with sharp, chamfered or blunt edges and with carbide or CBN tools. The analysis is based on the use of arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method, which makes it possible to analyze the cutting action without having to resort to node separation methods or remeshing. Simulations include cutting with tools of different chamfer angles at a range of cutting speeds and the numerical results are compared with experimental data obtained under similar cutting conditions. The study shows that a region of dead material zone is formed under the chamfer and acts as the effective cutting edge of the tool (in accordance with experimental observations). As a result, the chip formation process is not significantly affected by the presence of the chamfer. However, the forces, the thrust force in particular, are considerably increased. The effect of cutting speed on the process is also studied and is shown to produce a significant increase in maximum temperature on the rake face.
