Abstract:
In the works published by Valentin Kataev after 1966, his own past is reflected consistently. This tempts the reader and critic to interpret them as memoirs. However, such a label is too narrow and thus inaccurate. For Kataev, the past stimulates his imagination, and memory is the relentless, uncontrollable retriever of previous times. Rather than a factual resurrection of Kataev's past, his prose of this period is an adorned recreation. The critical "thaw", that followed Stalin's death, permitted the expression of sincere emotion in Soviet literature; sincere, in the sense that suffering that resulted from the implementation of the new plan could be revealed in prose and poetry. Kataev accepted this opportunity. In the stories that this study examines, Uzhe napisan Verter, Spiashchii, and Sukhoi liman, Kataev expresses how life from the past can remain and change for survivors in the present.

Abstract:
Most critical acclaim of William Faulkner has focused on his innovations of narrative technique, and while critics have frequently noted the correlation between form and meaning in his novels, the central focus of these novels--race--has largely been ignored in the criticism. The purpose of this paper is to examine Faulkner's narrative methodology and arrangement of material in order to demonstrate that the structures of his novels, particularly Light in August and Absalom, Absalom!, consistently enhance and dramatize the major subject and themes of the novels. Under careful scrutiny, these structures reveal an effective and dramatic parallel between Faulkner's rhetorical methodology and the complexity of his subject matter--the South, and the issue of race.

Abstract:
This study compares fetishistic desires exhibited within Faulkner's fiction to the narrative strategies governing those texts. It surveys Faulkner's thematic and narrative experiments with fetishism from his first poems and sketches through his major novels. His early works, especially "Nympholepsy" and The Marble Faun, capture fetishistic moments of longing and lack of fulfillment, attraction and repulsion. Faulkner's novels, though, re-enact the dynamics of fetishism by means of their narrative strategies; thus, Faulkner achieves a correspondence between the fictional form and the fetish depicted. Because his texts engage us within their shifting temporality and symbolic repetitions, as readers we invariably fall prey to the fetishistic desires his narratives initiate and imitate. Interpretive problems necessarily arise concerning the reader's relationship to the text and desire for meaning. In As I Lay Dying, multiple points-of-view call our attention to the validity of interpretive perception; in Sanctuary, rape operates as Faulkner's master trope for both the characters' and reader's struggles for dominance; in Absalom, Absalom!, writing and reading history are obsessions shared by the narrators and the reader. My readings are informed by several interdisciplinary approaches to fetishism, such as: icon-worship and totemism from anthropology; object and linguistic substitutions from psychoanalysis; commodity exchange and reification from Marxist theories; and sign production and displacement from post-structuralism. Instead of imposing a general taxonomy for fetishism, I have allowed each text's narrative and thematic structures to guide my readings and, therefore, consciously matched my readings to the particular fetishes his narratives engender.

Abstract:
Since F.S. Boas coined the term in 1896, All's Well That Ends Well, Troilus and Cressida, and Measure For Measure have been generally accepted as "problem plays," and many critics have offered biographical, thematic, and formal explanations of why these plays are so "dark." In this thesis, I accept that these plays are "problems" and I propose a rhetorical explanation for dissatisfaction with them, especially with their endings. Drawing on Kenneth Burke's philosophy of literary form and his anthropology of man as the symbol-using animal, I show that in these plays Shakespeare frustrates the expectations of an audience for a definite ending through death or marriage which would define the "terms" characterized in each play; secondly, he provides no scapegoat whose victimage would allow the audience to recognize an order clearly proposed for its acceptance; finally, he supplies no symbol of order which credibly demonstrates its power to establish a renewed society. As rhetoric, these plays show an intense "dancing of attitudes" toward symbols of order and toward conventional forms which would provide a clear sense of an ending. As such, they show what Burke calls "self-interference" on the part of the playwright — a deliberate balancing of arguments for the sake of "quizzicality" toward language as symbolic action. According to this analysis, the problem plays remain problems for an audience which seeks identification with symbols of order; they are, however, a tribute to the agile mind of a master rhetorician.

Abstract:
This study of Faulkner's Go Down, Moses uses the reader-response theories of Wolfgang Iser to examine the affective impact of strategically-arranged folk conventions and mythopoeic devices upon a textually-based, white "civilized" reader. Using the devices of Southwestern humor, the trickster, and the tragic Black folk tale, "Was" through "Pantaloon in Black" repeatedly sidetrack the reader into unconscious participation in the white-code attitudes he was invited to criticize. When this hypocritical participation is discovered at certain "points of significance" in "The Fire and the Hearth" and "Pantaloon in Black," the reader's rationally-humanistic norms are rendered ineffectual, setting the stage for the undermining of a second idealism based on primitive myth. In "The Old People" and "The Bear" the reader is induced by mythopoeic devices to adopt Isaac McCaslin's unifying mythical norms and, thereby, to criticize his own failures in "Was" through "Pantaloon in Black" along with Southern civilization's socially-fragmenting rational-empiric concept of progress. "Delta Autumn," however, will undermine the reader's attempts to create moral unity using Isaac's natural hierarchy. With mythopoeic devices withdrawn, the wilderness destroyed by civilization, and Isaac McCaslin's reversion to white-code attitudes regarding Roth's Black/white offspring, the reader can see Isaac's experience in "The Bear" for what it really is, not an introduction into Sam Fathers's immutable cyclic unity but an initiation into fragmenting Cavalier forms and values. Once again the reader faces the hypocritical ineffectuality of his own idealism. For by emotionally and intellectually identifying with Isaac's misperception of the wilderness experience, he has aligned himself with socially-alienating rather than socially-unifying values. Now confronting the fragmentation dramatized in Isaac's terror-motivated racism and experienced in his own textual failures, the reader is ready for "the existential norm of "Go Down, Moses," where he is encouraged to construct meaning out of non-meaning by negating the "bad faith" of Gavin Stevens, who in fear chooses stable but racially-fragmenting Cavalier values, and by affirming the "good faith" of Molly Beauchamp and Miss Worsham, who choose the temporal unity of shared suffering in the face of chaos.

Abstract:
"The Religious Dimensions of William Faulkner: An Inquiry into the Dichotomy of Puritanism" traces a secular mode of thinking of American moral superiority and the gospel of success to its religious origins. The study shows that while the basis for American moral superiority derives from the typological correspondence between sacred history and American experience, the gospel of success results from the Puritan preoccupation with work as a virtue instead of a necessity because labor improves one's lot in this world while securing salvation in the next. By explaining how Puritanism begins as a rejection of worldliness but ends as an orgy of materialism, my study raises and addresses the paradoxical nature of the Puritan legacy: Why should the Puritan work ethic, when subverted by its logical conclusion---the gospel of success, result in the undoing of Puritan spirituality in its mission of redeeming the Old World? Furthermore, this inquiry examines the role Puritanism plays in creating the mythologies of America as the New World Garden, the white man as the American Adam, the black man as the American Ham, and the white woman as the American Eve. In the Puritan use of biblical typology, blacks and women function as the white men's servants and helpmates and, as such, have only adjunctive value to the white men's moral vision of the New Canaan and their economic pursuit of an earthly paradise. Since the racist and sexist discourse of Adamic self-creation predominates the American Dream, blacks and women become part of, rather than owner of, that dream. Basing my analysis on his three major novels, I demonstrate William Faulkner's penetrating insight into the dilemmas and ramifications of Puritanism in his critique of the American gospel of success in general and the Southern gospels of racism and sexism in particular. My conception of Puritanism in dichotomous tension, paradigmatically proposed as the American Adam turned Franklinesque self-made man, sheds new light on Faulkner's fictional characters as victims of the Puritan moral ambiguities.

Abstract:
This thesis examines eight novels by William Faulkner by means of a critical method based on a concept of landscape. The thesis developed out of a curiosity regarding the vivid pictures that Faulkner's novels evoked in the mind of this reader. These reminded the reader of pictures similar in their vividness to those evoked in childhood by fairy tales and children's literature. In the main, here, ` the vivid Faulknemian pictures are examined from a moral point of view. The critical method follows from the idea of the literary landscape as a holistic entity, 'a prospect such as may be taken in at a glance from one point of view'. The method operates in three stages, and the vivid pictures found in the landscapes of the novels are deemed to function as centres of particular interest. In the first stage of the method, an impressionistic landscape, so called, is established, based on the facts of place, time, society, events and values given in or deducible from the novel. The vivid pictures are noted. The second stage calls for the quantification of the author's technical strategies, and in the third stage the vivid pictures are adopted as the starting points for detailed analyses of one or more aspects of the novel. The method seems to bring into focus a mature, detailed and satisfying reader's landscape which, it is hoped, functions as an R accurate reflection of the author's literary creation.

Abstract:
In spite of the enormous resurgence of critical interest in minor figures of the Victorian era over the last twenty years, almost no attention has been paid to Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897). In his own age, he was respected as a man of letters, educator, art critic, poet, friend of Alfred Tennyson, and editor of The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language, first published in 1861. This dissertation attempts to make good that neglect in two ways: firstly, through an analysis of his life and times, an assessment of his writings as an art and literary critic, an examination of his considerable corpus of original poetry, and the compilation of the first comprehensive bibliography of his own publications. This bibliography is accompanied by a checklist of manuscript sources and a listing of secondary materials about Palgrave himself. Secondly, the dissertation makes the first systematic examination of the Golden Treasury, its genesis and editing principles, its critical reception, and its publication history. This detailed study is accompanied by eight appendices giving bibliographical information about the form and contents of the four major editions of the Treasury published in Palgrave's lifetime, along with a listing of sources and a checklist of contemporary reviews. Throughout the dissertation, the intellectual concerns that led Palgrave to develop a set of fixed principles for judging all art and literature are examined in order to establish that, like his friend Matthew Arnold, he was a committed Hellenist, who insisted that all poetry conform to what he perceived as the "Homeric" ideals of simplicity and unadorned language. The Golden Treasury, in particular, is based on an ideal of "unity" which Palgrave used to justify the many editorial excisions and variant readings which are such a feature of the volume's texts. It is impossible to account fully for the unprecedented success of the Golden Treasury, which has continued to be reprinted in a variety of editions from the time of its first publication until the present, but one of its most important features is that it is the first anthology of English lyric poetry to declare itself complete: Palgrave insisted that the book contained all the best lyrics in the English language. Just as significant is the fact that it is the first anthology by a professional educator who refused to make his selections on the basis of their morally improving qualities, but relied instead on poetic excellence alone. "Francis Turner Palgrave and The Golden Treasury," therefore, attempts to account for the extraordinary success of the Golden Treasury and to examine one of the nineteenth-century's more interesting minor figures, one who was a friend of some of the most brilliant men of his day, including Jowett, Browning, Arnold, Clough, and Gladstone; a recognised minor poet of the "contemplative" school which included Arnold and Clough; and a well-known champion of the Pre-Raphaelite painters.

Henri Michaux first discovered mescaline in 1956. This encounter proved a lasting influence on the work of the writer who, for at least ten years, struggled to circumscribe, then tried to explain the nature of the terrible shock he had received from the mind-altering chemical. The event was so important for the poet that in due time, it brought about a veritable conversion, a total and uncompromising revision of his most fundamental relationships towards the function of language and thought, and towards the basic premises of existence in general. Signs had hinted, previously, at this sudden transfiguration of his vision. His relationships with other drugs (ether, opium) betrayed his hidden desire to go beyond the limits ordained by his tragically caustic and defiant mind. Yet mescaline alone, as a weapon, proved strong enough to overcome Michaux's chronic insubordination, and clear the prolific way that led him toward the realisation and acceptance of that obscure other whose presence he had hitherto only felt, and which had been asleep within him forever.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis traverses the complexities and entanglement of theoretical and practical processes in a Post-structural age. Through the deconstruction of stable systems of knowledge and thought, this age has become synonymous with uncertainty. In an attempt to navigate a time of continual change, Foucault proposes a toolkit. Foucault advocates deconstruction, critical engagement and reflection. In addition to these tools, this thesis moves through genealogical, mapping, archaeological and glass (blowing) methodologies. My practice cannot be separated from theory, it is excavated concurrently. Foucault, Derrida, Nietzsche, Deleuze and Guattari open up knowledge systems in an effort to uncover alternative thought trajectories and create a space in which complexity can exist. Knowledge circulating in this space is not fixed, it manifests in moments. My practical project, Fleeting Certainty, also aims to create an open space. It does not culminate in one, autonomous work, but is rather an archive of moments. Viewers will also be equipped with a toolkit of light and lenses with which to create moments of their own. Therefore moments will generate continuously. These theoretical and practical processes do not culminate in a coherent conclusion. There is a pause, a comma, but there are many more trajectories or lines to follow.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis deurkruis die ingewikkeldhede en verstrengeling van teoretiese en praktiese prosesse binne ’n Post-strukturele tydperk. Hierdie tydperk het, deur die dekonstruksie van stabiele stelsels van kennis en denke, gelykstaande aan onsekerheid geword. In a poging om ’n tydperk van voortdurende verandering te verken, stel Foucault sekere hulpmiddels voor. Foucault bepleit, dekonstruksie, kritiese betrokkenheid en besinning. Benewens hierdie hulpmiddels, maak hierdie tesis gebruik van genealogiese, karterings-, argeologiese en glas (blaas) metodologieë. Die praktiese komponent van my werk hou ten nouste verband met die teoretiese en kan nie van mekaar geskei word nie. This thesis document serves as a support paper for my exhibition titled, Selected Work. The goal of this document is to present and discuss a set of ideas and interests as they pertain to my studio practice and thesis project in particular, and to contemporary (ie. current) art practices in general. In this document I examine selected works from Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Andy Kaufman, Maurizio Cattelan and Richard Prince. Through the exploration of these artists and their works, I begin by examining the object and the conditions that give it approval as an art object. Using these conditions, I examine the effect that experience has on the object. This support paper will serve as a glossary of terms and theoretical concerns relevant to my thesis exhibition

Abstract:
'Direct experience of God' is a term frequently used by theologians without adequate clarification regarding its meaning. The understanding thereof has become increasingly complicated by the process of secularization. In the 1960's, it was repeatedly asserted that modern people could not have direct experiences of God, albeit that one could still live by faith and by commitment to the way of Jesus in a world in which, it was asserted, "God is dead". This claim, although long predominant, has been challenged by the upsurge of interest in mysticism, both Eastern and Western, and the burgeoning of Pentecostalism and the Charismatic movement, in which circles direct experience of God was frequently claimed. If direct experience of God is something natural to humanity, interpretation of it will vary in exactly the same way as interpretation of all other human experiences. This could be a possible reason for it being so very poorly integrated into everyday life, resulting in the loss of meaning and value.

Abstract:
Supervision is widely acknowledged as influencing the quality of postgraduate theses, and by association, of postgraduates. Despite this, publications on conducting research offer far less guidance on managing the supervision relationship than on the practicalities of producing a thesis. In-depth, qualitative supervision studies are few and fewer still examine power in the supervision relationship. Michel Foucault’s insights are used to explore the question: How do postgraduate supervisors and their Master’s students experience the supervision relationship and how are the dynamics of interpersonal and institutional power implicated in these relationships? Foucault argues that power relations always involve resistances; these function primarily through institutionalized discourses to produce different forms of knowledge, one form of which is identity or subjectivity. Accordingly, power relations are explored in terms of thesis-as-product, person-as-product and the impact of both on the mediation of knowledge in the educational domain. Four institutionalized discourses in the university domain are examined: · Commercial educational management discourse: targets academics through issues of quality assurance, throughput, publication, research productivity and funding. · Anarchic educational leadership discourse: integrates quantum principles with commercial demands, change management strategies and meaningful participation. · Humanistic discourse: favours a pastoral ethic and is person-centered. · Holistic discourse: cultivates ecological sensibility and values the interconnectedness of all aspects of being-in-the-world. Data collected in sixteen semi-structured interviews with three matched supervisor-student pairs selected from the humanities and education faculties of one South African university, are presented as case studies. Data analysis combines grounded theory techniques with selected aspects of Foucault’s methods. A conceptual model is devised to analyse how participants use resistance strategies to interface their autonomy and dependency with their expectations, abilities, and professional and pastoral care. The research yields rich data in which several thematic correlations in interpersonal and institutional power dynamics are grounded. These include: the significance of supervisor-student matching; links between expectations, abilities, the way participants negotiate power and the quality of professional and pastoral care they experience; the benefit of personal affinity to thesis-as-product and person-as-product; and the impact of commercial demands on participants’ power relations. Participants tend to reproduce the discourses in which they are embedded and adopt or adapt aspects of contesting discourses to this end. Potential avenues are identified for improving supervision practice and for further research.

Abstract:
Margaret Oliphant's fiction has generated some interest in recent years, but her prose essays have been ignored. Critics contend her essays are unimportant and dismiss Oliphant as a hack writer who had little sympathy with her sex. These charges are untrue, however, because many influences complicated Oliphant's writings on the Woman Question. She suffered recurring financial difficulties and gender discrimination, she lacked formal education, and most of her work was published by Blackwood's, a conservative, male-oriented periodical edited by a close personal friend. Readers who are aware of these influences find Oliphant's earliest three essays about the Woman Question especially provocative because in them Oliphant explored the dichotomy between the perceived and the real lives of women. Oliphant refined her opinions each time she wrote on the Woman Question, and a more coherent, more clearly feminist, perspective emerges in each succeeding article. In "The Laws Concerning Women," despite Oliphant's apparent position, pre-feminist markers suggest that she is tentative about feminist ideas rather than negative towards them. "The Condition of Women" offers even more prefeminist markers, Oliphant's ostensible support of the patriarchal status quo notwithstanding. In "The Great Unrepresented," an article cited by some as proof that Oliphant was against women's suffrage, she argues not against enfranchising women, but against the method proposed for securing the vote. In this article, many pre-feminist markers have become decidedly feminist. Scholars may have overlooked Oliphant's feminism because her rhetorical strategies are more complicated than those of most other Victorian critics and invite her audience to read between the lines. Although her writing sometimes lacks unity and focus, and her prose is often turgid, convoluted, and digressive, she creates elaborate inverse arguments with claims supporting patriarchy but evidence that supports feminism. Le present essai propose en premier lieu une analyse de la theorie linguistique de Walter Benjamin telle qu'enoncee dans son essai de 1916, Uber Sprache uberhaupt und uber die Sprache des Menschen. Dans un meme temps, il propose aussi une analyse de la theorie linguistique de la Kabbale telle qu'elaboree par Gershom Scholem tout au long de sa vie, dans un nombre non negligeable de publications, theorie dont il chercha a faire la synthese dans son essai de 1970, Der Name Gottes und die Sprachtheorie der Kabbala.
Cet essai se propose ensuite de demontrer comment Scholem et Benjamin ont trouve dans l'oeuvre de Franz Kafka l'expression litteraire de leurs theories linguistiques.
En conclusion, cet essai se propose de demontrer comment Scholem et Benjamin, a partir de leurs theories linguistiques respectives, et malgre la proximite indeniable de celles-ci, en sont venus a interpreter Kafka d'une facon diametralement opposee. Scholem, en effet, voyait dans cette oeuvre l'expression d'une des theories les plus nihilistes de la Kabbale: Die Unvollziehbarkeit der Offenbarung, une negation de la Revelation divine; Benjamin voyait pour sa part chez Kafka l'expression d'une tres mince possibilite de redemption.

Abstract:
Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," as early as 1839, reveals an uneasiness about the space of the house. Most literary scholars accept that this anxiety exists and causes some tension, since it seems antithetical to another dominant motif, that of the power of place and the home as sanctuary. My critical persona, like Poe's narrator in "The House of Usher," looks into a dark, silent tarn and shudders to see in it not only the reflection of the House of Usher, but perhaps the whole of what is "Southern" in Southern Literature. Many characters who inhabit the worlds of Southern stories also inhabit houses that, like the House of Usher, are built on the faulty foundation of an ideological system that divides the world into inside(r)/outside(r) and along numerous other binary lines. The task of constructing the self in spaces that house such ideologies poses a challenge to the characters in the works under consideration in this study, and their success in doing so is dependant on their ability to speak authentically in the language of silence and to dwell instead of to just inhabit interior spaces. In my reading of Faulkner and Warren, this ideology of division is clearly to be at fault in the collapse of houses, just as it is seen to be in the House of Usher. This emphasis is especially conspicuous in several works, beginning with Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! and its (pre)text, "Evangeline." Warren carries the motif forward in his late novels, Flood and Meet Me in the Green Glen. I examine these works relative to spatial analysis and an aesthetic of absence, including an interpretation of silence as a mode of authentic saying. I then discuss these motifs as they are operating in Toni Morrison's Beloved, and finally take Song of Solomon as both an end and a beginning to these texts' concerns with collapsing structures of narrative and house.

Abstract:
A randomly-selected sample of 31,115 words taken from the eight original plays of Lillian Hellman was analyzed on the basis of female and male dialogue. Lexical classes--verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns--were examined by studying terms described by other researchers, especially Mary P. Hiatt, as belonging to generally "feminine" or "masculine" categories. In these classes, differences were statistically significant based on gender in two areas.Adjective figures that took into account type 1) of adjective, 2) of referent, and 3) of speaker showed statistical significance. This was true only for the "feminine" adjectives, especially as used by female speakers for female referents. Pronouns were distributed through the plays and used by the genders of speakers at significant levels of difference. A connection was evidenced between each gender of speaker and the gender of pronouns used, a strong relationship that also showed significance by play.Areas of syntax studied were emphasis, communication unit length, and clause structure. Markings of emphasis were significant by gender, female characters having both more instances and more marked words. Length evidenced no difference, likely because of requirements of the dramatic setting. The study of clause structure showed that female characters were given more whole sentences and more coordination at significant levels.Each area studied was analyzed for statistical significance. Hiatt's results were also statisticaly calculated and reported. Significance was based on chi-square calculations, at a level of p < .05 for rejecting null hypotheses. In addition to an axis based on gender, figures were also computed for specific plays.Applying the categories to individual plays and characters showed Hellman"s use of these strategies to define personality. For instance, with adjectives and emphasis, types more often given to female characters were also given in comparatively large number to themen in the Hubbard plays (The Little Foxes, and Another Part of the Forest), thereby marking them as unusual and adding to their characterization.

This research refers mainly to Jacques Lagrange’s unpublished manuscripts related to courses offered by Michel Foucault at École Normale Supérieure de Paris, and deposited at Institut Mémoires de l’Édition Contemporaine. The latter focus on files concerning the 1950s –a period not to be ignored if one intends to understand the development of his researches, in order to apprehend the role of Psychology in Michel Foucault’s philosophical problematic. Resumo: Este estudo pretende compreender as Memorias de Pedro Nava enquanto um produto tardio do movimento modernista. Para isto, investiga especialmente as relações desta obra com o modernismo de Mário de Andrade, de cujas ideias o memorialista julga-se devedor. Progressivamente, a análise encaminha-se de modo a demonstrar as peculiaridades da obra de Nava, notadamente a sua atração pela literatura fin de siècle e, sobretudo, a sua peculiar concepção de tempo - traço mais visível quando comparada à obra de outros colegas de movimento, como Carlos Drummond de Andrade e Murilo Mendes (outros memorialistas tardios) ou ainda Oswald de Andrade. Esta peculiar concepção de tempo colaborará para, na "Conclusão" do trabalho, compor a feição tardia do ciclo naviano, então entendido numa chave saidiana (isto é, de acordo com Edward Said em Estilo Tardio). Abstract: This work examines the Pedro Nava's Memorias as a late product of the Modernist movement. In this sense, we study the relationship of this text with the Modernism conceived by Mario de Andrade (whose ideas have influenced a lot Nava in the 20s). Subsequently, the analysis aims to demonstrate the peculiarities of Nava's Memorias, highlighting the importance of Symbolist-Decadent movement and the peculiar concept of time proposed in this memorial narrative. In the latter case, the Memorias are compared with other modernist works: late memoirists as Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Murilo Mendes (besides, in another chapter, Oswald de Andrade's poems) illustrate this critical path. In the "Conclusion", this peculiar conception of time is important to understand this memories as late work (according to the ideas of Edward Said in his book On Late Style). This is intended to describe the insular position of Nava's Memorias in the context of Brazilian Modernism

Michel Foucault (1926-1984) is a thinker well recognized for establishing a peculiar relationship with philosophy: he constantly affirms that he cannot be considered a philosopher, criticizes the way that philosophy is exercised, rigorously and creatively proposing another form of practicing it. Interested in understanding the transformations of thought, he investigates the past to diagnose the present, invents concepts, constructs ideas, and destroys evidences. Passionate to novelty and always willing to take risks, he develops his intellectual trajectory in search of new ways of acting and thinking. This paper investigates a conception of philosophy in the light of Michel Foucault. Using the resource of metaphor, this conception is presented as a philosophical theater. In “The stage of philosophy”, Foucault states that his life is dedicated to "the theater of truth", a "story of the scene", a story of how sickness, madness and crime were staged. On the other hand, the inventiveness of the Foucauldian thought evokes the vitality of the theatrical performance. In the first chapter the relations between Foucault and the theater appear. The next three chapters summon the theatrical stage as an epistemic and heterotopic space of the philosophy, the actor as a professor, engaged philosopher, endowed with philosophical gestures, and the staging as "radical journalism", diagnosis of the present, "impatience of freedom", transgressive and limit-experience. Facing all these relations, to conceive philosophy as a philosophical theater, means to signalize the possibility of "thinking differently than one thinks, and perceiving differently from what one sees"
Michel Foucault (1926-1984) é um pensador reconhecido por estabelecer uma relação peculiar com a filosofia: afirma numerosas vezes que não pode ser considerado filósofo, critica a maneira como ela é exercida e propõe, de forma rigorosa e criativa, outra maneira de praticá-la. Interessado em compreender as transformações do pensamento, ele investiga o passado para diagnosticar o presente, inventa conceitos, constrói ideias e destrói evidências. Apaixonado pelo novo e disposto a correr riscos, desenvolve sua trajetória intelectual em busca de novas formas de agir e de pensar. Este trabalho investiga uma concepção de filosofia à luz de Michel Foucault. Utilizando o recurso da metáfora, esta elaboração é apresentada como teatro filosófico. Em A cena da filosofia, Foucault afirma que sua vida é dedicada ao “teatro da verdade”, uma “história da cena”, história de como se encenaram a doença, a loucura, o crime. Por outro lado, a inventividade do pensamento foucaultiano evoca a vitalidade do fazer teatral. No primeiro capítulo figuram as relações entre Foucault e o teatro. Os três capítulos seguintes convocam o palco teatral como espaço epistêmico e heterotópico da filosofia, o ator como professor, filósofo engajado, dotado de gestos filosóficos, e a encenação como “jornalismo radical”, diagnóstico do presente, “impaciência da liberdade”, experiência-limite e transgressora. Abstract:
Mishima Yukio premiered the play Rokumeikan in 1956 and published it in 1957. For more than half a century, this play has been praised as one of the finest Japanese plays in the Post-War period. Rokumeikan is a multi-act tragic melodrama, set in 1886 (Meiji Period) in the Rokumeikan building. The play intertwines complex political cabals, intense loves and hatreds, and multiple deceptions embodying the conflict between political power and love. This essay explores the reasons why Rokumeikan has maintained its popularity over its fifty year long performance history and examines the critical reception of the play. My analysis of the Rokumeikan text is based on conflicting notions of truth and power. According to the French philosopher, Michel Foucault, socio-political power creates truth. This "power reality" is embodied in the play by Prime Minister Kageyama, and its authority is challenged by his wife, Asako, who has an entirely different conception of truth. This interplay of conflicting values has helped to maintain the popularity and stature of the play for half a century.

Resumo: Este trabalho tem como tema a análise da abordagem sociológica desenvolvida pelo sociólogo alemão Norbert Elias (1897-1990). A teoria de processo e figuração desenvolvida pelo autor ao longo de sua vida fundamenta-se na relação funcional de interdependência recíproca que se estabelece entre os indivíduos vivendo em sociedade. Com essa postura, Norbert Elias transpõe o campo das dicotomias já determinadas, pois estabelece a priori uma relação de interdependência entre indivíduo e sociedade. Tal abordagem teórica tem por objetivo a construção de modelos de análise, empiricamente embasados, calcados em uma perspectiva processual, de longo prazo, onde se identifique, simultaneamente, as alterações na estruturas sociais, para que, assim, possa-se chegar a visualizar a direção de seu curso. Outro apoio conceitual ao modelo teórico, além da noção processual, é a idéia de figuração, esta consiste, basicamente, na compreensão das organizações sociais - famílias, escolas, cidades ou estratos sociais - como sendo formadas pelas relações de interdependência entre os indivíduos. Em uma figuração são analisadas as dinâmicas das inclinações individuais que levam várias pessoas a se unirem em formarem uma sociedade. Dessa forma, os sentimentos e padrões de comportamento individuais são levados em consideração em igualdade com a análise de macroestrutura social. Neste trabalho, cada conceito será tratado isoladamente, porém sem que se perca a relação entre eles. Isso se deve a uma escolha didática, para que fique claro ao leitor as especificidades seja da noção de processo, seja da noção de figuração, bem como a maneira que se relacionam. Considerando que os arcabouços teóricos e empíricos não nascem descolados de um contexto social e histórico, bem como são igualmente fruto de percepções individuais de quem os produz, este trabalho apresenta ainda uma biografia concisa de Norbert Elias
Abstract: This doctoral thesis is dealing with the analysis of the sociological approach developed by the German sociologist Norbert Elias (1897-1990). The process and figuration theory developed by the author during his lifetime is based on the idea of functional relations of mutual interdependence established between individuals living in society. From this starting point, Norbert Elias establishes a priori a relationship of interdependence between individual and society, transcending the field of predetermined dichotomies. Such theoretical approach aims at the construction of analytical models that are empirically substantiated and based on a long-term and process-related perspective. By identifying the changes occurring within social structures, it renders possible to visualize the direction of their course. In addition to the notion of process, the idea of figuration has been considered as part of Elias' theoretical model. This idea comprises basically an understanding of social organizations - families, schools, cities or social classes - as being formed by relations of interdependence between individuals. In a given figuration the individual penchants are analyzed that bring different people to come together making up a society. Thus, sentiments and patterns of individual behavior are considered in the same way as the social macro-structure is analyzed. In this work, each concept is treated separately, but without ignoring the relation between them. This is due to a didactical choice in order to clarify to the reader the specifics of the two concepts, process and figuration, as well as the ways that characterize their interrelation. Taking into consideration that the theoretical and empirical frameworks do not come into being detached from a specific social and historical context and, in addition, have to be understood as the fruits of the individual perceptions of whom has been responsible for generating them, this thesis presents also a short biography of Norbert Elias

Uma mentalidade de indiferença em relação à desigualdade, à violência e à exclusão é comum em um país como o nosso. Vive-se como se fosse natural tanto a opulência em meio à pobreza quanto as regalias de poucos em meio às dificuldades de tantos. Existe uma cultura de aceitação de tais situações, que acredita ser possível conciliar ideais libertários e democráticos com uma estrutura social absolutamente injusta. O trabalho tem como enfoque central as Prédicas Dores de Maria, que constituem a primeira parte do manuscrito de Antônio Conselheiro, publicado por Ataliba Nogueira. Concluímos que o movimento de Canudos, que teve a religiosidade como força motriz, foi liderado por um homem de profunda religiosidade, que acima de tudo sobrepujou tradições ambíguas e reavivou as que estavam latentes. Dessa maneira o trabalho visa valorizar a experiência religiosa que se refletiu na pregação e atuação do líder/beato como resposta às formas situacionais daquela época. Pois ao que se sabe a trajetória de Antônio Conselheiro em sua Canudos e a sua luta foram muito mais por justiça do que supuseram muitos estudiosos: o Conselheiro não foi um louco, fanático, beato ou qualquer outra das interpretações que a ele foram dadas, foi um líder religioso inteligente e sensível. A metodologia utilizada para o desenvolvimento do trabalho foi a análise do conteúdo. A análise do conteúdo dessas prédicas foi um caminho para interpretar as situações de injustiça então existentes em Canudos
A mentality of indifference to inequality, violence and exclusion is common in our country. It seems as if the presence of opulence and wealth of the few was natural. A culture of acceptance of such situations exists, and it believes that it is possible to conciliate democratic ideals and liberties and with a thoroughly unjust a social structure. Our study focalizes on the Sermons, Pains of Maria which constitute the first part of the manuscript of Antônio Conselheiro, published by Ataliba Nogueira. We conclude that the movement of Canudos had religiosity as the driving force and was led by a man of great religious motivation. He received an ambiguous tradition but revived the potentialities in it. In this way our study seeks to value the religious experience which is reflected in the preaching and career of the leader /beato as a reply to the historical and social context. It is well known that the life of Antônio Conselheiro in Canudos was much more concerned for social justice than scholars have assumed. Antônio Conselheiro was not an insane person, fanatic, beato or any another derogatory name given to him. He was an intelligent leader. The methodology of our study is an analysis of the sermons. Such an analysis helped us to interpret the social injustice then existing in Canudos

The first chapter discusses the passage The great confinement from The History of Madness, which was a thesis published in 1961. At first, we consider that this text presented, in Focault‟s thought, the relationship between madness and reason and the conjuction of knowledge and power which, in modernity, lead to the marginalisation of madness in the epstemological constitution of the cartesian subject in Descartes‟ Meditations and other metaphysical writings. Later, this dissertation shows that this approach resulted in a polemic between Focault and Jacques Derrida (1930-2009). This theoretical dispute did not appear to have meaningful impact, however, the theoretical dispute resulted in vigorous problems. In the second chapter, it is discussed the way in which Focault, at the first class in the course The Hermeneutics of Subject (1981-1982), brings back issues such as the subject of knowledge and their relationship with the truth, associated with the know yourself of and the care of oneself in ancient ethical tradition. At this course, Focault points out keys for interpretation that will allow us to conclude that the relationship between the know yourself of oneself and the care of oneself in the field of acient subject‟s practical conduct. Therefore, the dissertation aims to emphasize and discuss two moments of problematization which, according to different emphasis, goes through Focault‟s writing
Esta dissertação tem o objetivo de discutir o tema do sujeito ético epistemológico em Foucault em dois momentos precisos de seus trabalhos: no capítulo “A grande Internação” de História da loucura na Idade Clássica, e na aula de 6 de janeiro de 1982 do curso A Hermenêutica do Sujeito. O primeiro capítulo aborda a passagem “A Grande Internação” da História da loucura na Idade Clássica, tese publicada em 1961. Num primeiro momento deste capítulo, consideramos que este texto apresentou, no pensamento foucaultiano, a relação entre loucura e razão e a conjunção de saberes e poderes que, na modernidade, levaram à marginalização da loucura na constituição epistêmica do sujeito cartesiano em as Meditações Metafisicas de Descartes. Num segundo momento, mostramos que essa abordagem de Foucault desencadeou uma polêmica entre ele e Jacques Derrida (1930-2009). Essa disputa teórica aparentava ser transitória e desprovida de maior impacto, todavia, o embate teórico travado produziu problemas vigorosos. O segundo capítulo discute o modo pelo qual Foucault, na primeira aula do curso A Hermenêutica do sujeito (1981-1982), recupera questões referentes ao tema do sujeito de conhecimento e sua relação com a verdade, associado ao conhecimento de si e cuidado de si na tradição ética antiga. Nesse curso, Foucault indica chaves de interpretação que nos permitirão concluir que a relação entre “conhecimento” e “cuidado de si” decorre da problematização do sujeito elaborada por Foucault no início da década de 1980. No recorte de A Hermenêutica do sujeito, identificaremos a ocorrência do cuidado de si no campo da conduta prática do sujeito antigo. Abstract:
Critical reactions to the religious experiences contained in William Faulkner's fiction have tended to fall within the context of traditional Christian belief systems. In most instances, the characters' beliefs have been judged by the tenets of belief systems or religions that are not necessarily those on which the characters base their lives. There has been no effort to understand the characters' spirituality as the basis of an independent religious belief system. Mircea Eliade's methods and models in the study of comparative religion, in particular his explanation of the interaction of the sacred and the profane during a hierophany (the manifestation of the sacred), can be applied to the belief systems of Faulkner's characters to reveal the theologies of the characters' religions, the nature of the belief systems on which they base their lives. Identification of those stories associated with hierophanies in Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha fiction enables the isolation and analysis of the sacred stories and sacraments of Yoknapatawpha County's civil religion. The storytellings examined appear in Flags in the Dust, "A Justice," and Absalom, Absalom!. The storytellers and the audiences are all a part of the Yoknapatawpha community, and the stories are drawn from a common history. The sacralization and use of particular stories to explain certain events reflects the faith life of the community as a whole, as well as that of the individual participating in the ritual. The explication of the profane experiences the myths are meant to sanctify will reveal that the individuals, and consequently, the community, are in the process of discarding their old, civil religion. As a result, they have lost the ability to adapt their ancestral myths to fit the existential crises they presently face. Unable to infuse the present with the sacred, Yoknapatawpha1s younger generation is overwhelmed by the chaos that surrounds it.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I argue that Douglas Sirk was attempting to dissolve the boundaries of the cinematic medium by assimilating elements of avant-garde art, architecture and design into the colour, composition and settings of many of his most popular studio produced films. While the exaggerated artifice of this director�s formal style has often been remarked upon, it has yet to be interpreted in the light of his detailed cognisance of the major art and architectural movements of the period, which include German Expressionist painting and Machine Age Modernist design. This is a lacuna that my thesis should at least partially fill, since I have shown that Sirk�s highly self conscious visual approach was deeply influenced by the artistic debates that were taking place in Europe during the 1920s and �30s and in America after World War II. To my mind, there is no doubt that this director�s syncretic mise-en-scène was the result of an interdisciplinary, transnational dialogue, and I have sought to illuminate some of the social, philosophical and political meanings that it seems to convey.

Abstract:
In this thesis I investigate the narrative rendering of urban experiences and the place of agency within these renderings, looking in particular at the personal stories of urban dwellers. Grounded in anthropological fieldwork in Britain - in the town of Romford (Essex) to the east of London - but also relying on written sources on British social realities, this thesis challenges the idea and practice of a traditional place-based ethnography, calling in turn for an anthropological appreciation of the individual writing of human experience. This I define as the considered ordering of the forms in terms of which individuals experience their lives. I recognise that such ‘writing', conceived as a cognitive pursuit, is possible within speech and not, as some may have it, the exclusive preserve of literary culture. In allowing that individuals may exercise authorship over their lives in this way, I find it is possible, as well as potentially illuminating, to compare individuals' writings, their personal accounts of their lives, with other genres for writing the reality of urban and peri-urban milieux in Britain. I hear significant correspondences between each story-genre, especially as regards the impacts of town planning on urban space for the populations that inhabit it, and discuss the possible theoretical implications of this correspondence. I focus extensively on two such genres in addition to personal stories: the sociological - examining Michael Young and Peter Willmott's sociological classic text ‘Family and Kinship in East London' - and the literary - a reading of the work of English poet and journalist John Betjeman. Running through the thesis is also an appreciation of the figure of the amateur, both as a real actor and as a metaphor for the postmodernist approach to culture to which I also subscribe.

Abstract:
The study seeks to interrogate the gender constructions in the Daily Sun’s “Charter for a Man” campaign which ran from 7 November to 7 December 2007. It coincided with the 16 Days of Activism against gender violence and was designed to lobby support for this campaign and discourage men from physically abusing women. The “Charter for a Man” listed nine principles that signatories were to abide by. It included a section to be signed by men to be submitted to and collected by the Daily Sun. The campaign was constructed as an intervention into the issue of gender violence. Consequently, the 30 news stories, four editorial pieces and 11 letters to the editor that were published during the campaign period make up the textual data analysed in the study. The news stories consisted of testimonies from abused women and some women abusers. In addition, celebrity signatories were selected to endorse the campaign and encourage other men to follow suit. In the editorials, the campaign was consistently flagged as a nation building initiative which all men were supposed to support. The letters to the editor consisted of readers who either supported or rejected the campaign. The study takes place against the context of a patriarchal society characterised by high levels of violence. Given this scenario, the study is informed by a concern with gender justice and therefore considers whether such a campaign, ostensibly aimed at eradicating gender violence, has the potential of being transformative of gender inequalities. The study set out to establish the kinds of masculinities and femininities that were variously constituted in the campaign as well as the gender discourses that were privileged. It is informed by the theories of feminist poststructuralism and Foucault’s conceptualisation of discourse. As the campaign is the initiative of a tabloid newspaper, it is also considered within the framework of newspaper campaigns and arguments about tabloids and the public sphere. As text based research, the study employs critical discourse analysis as a qualitative procedure of textual analysis. It makes use of an eclectic approach to textual analysis that draws on linguistics, narrative and argumentation. The texts are analysed according to the categories of news texts contained which includes the Charter itself, signatory articles, testimonies, vox pops and letters to the editor. The overarching theme of nationhood projected in the editorials and other categories is also discussed as part of the analysis. The study concludes that the Daily Sun campaign might be a seemingly progressive action at first glance. However, it does not challenge the existing gender order but rather maintains and sustains patriarchal attitudes through the repeated representation of women as weak and in need of patronage and men as their protectors and providers. In some instances, women are constructed primarily as sexual beings as their physical attributes are emphasised, while men are constructed as working class citizens and rational beings. The study therefore proposes that the Daily Sun fails as an alternative public sphere that might make visible the concerns of women as a marginalised group in society. The campaign, it is argued, is self-serving in its promotion of the Daily Sun’s image as the “People’s Paper” rather than serious concerns about gender violence.

The present study consists of a theoretical exercise, of a bibliographic character, destined to compose a master's thesis in Philosophy. The theme chosen is intended to accompany the reflections of Michel Foucault (1926-1984) on the so-called "kidnapping institutions". The way forward is to follow the footsteps of Michel Foucault's trajectory from his broader scope (the general panorama of his thinking) to the particular theme of "kidnapping institutions", especially through the moment of that trajectory in which they appear explicitly. To achieve such a purpose, there is an introduction about the intellectual path of the philosopher in (his) three moments, followed by the discipline and its generalization. Then, the study focuses the appearance of a disciplinary society, researching the "kidnapping institutions" in Modernity, in order to answer the question: after all, what is the very first function of "kidnapping institutions"?
O presente estudo consiste em um exercício teórico, de caráter bibliográfico, destinado a compor uma dissertação de mestrado em Filosofia. O tema escolhido tem o intuito de acompanhar as reflexões de Michel Foucault ( 1926-1984) sobre as assim chamadas “instituições de sequestro”. O caminho percorrido busca seguir os passos da trajetória de Michel Foucault desde seu âmbito maior ( o panorama geral do seu pensamento) até o tema particular das “ instituições de sequestro” , passando, especialmente pelo momento daquela trajetória na qual elas aparecem de modo explícito. Para tanto há uma introdução sobre a trajetória intelectual do filósofo em seus três momentos. Trata-se, em seguida, da disciplina e sua generalização. Abstract:
This thesis applies Kenneth Burke's method of logology as exemplified in The Rhetoric of Religion to analyze the Mormon text Doctrine and Covenants Section 88. This method of logology is based on the assumption that what is said about God in theology reveals a religion's use of language to influence human motives. The logological method uses six analogies to discover the motives implicit in religious terminologies. These six analogies are as follows: words-Word, Matter-Spirit, the Negative, the Titular, Time-Eternity, and the Formal.This study revealed that the terminology contained in Doctrine and Covenants uses motives far diferent from the motives of traditional Christianity as described by Burke. Primary differences include the existence of a cluster of god-terms that describes a universal hierarchy, and emphasis on and affirmation of the physical, and an emphasis on the positive. An examination of these terms and motives can help Mormons better appreicate the advantages inherent in their terminology as exemplified in Section 88.

Abstract:
Helen Martins devoted approximately the last thirty years of her life to converting her family home into a unique fantasy world which she named the Owl House. Since her death in 1976 the Owl House has become a national monument and museum in South Africa. Throughout her life Helen was considered by most of the surrounding villagers to have been strange, and she withdrew increasingly from society. However, she appeared to have contained a desire for human connection. There are several instances in which she expressed this desire, such as through the numerous letters which she wrote to fellow artists. The existing body of literature on Helen illustrates the complex nature of her personality; however the question of which personality style she best typifies has remained unanswered. In order to answer this question a psychobiography was conducted on Helen. Psychobiographies entail a biographical representation of a person's life history to which a psychological theory is applied. The psychological theory utilised within the current study was Millon's (1969/1996) Biosocial- Learning Theory. Thus, the chief objective of this study was to describe and interpret Helen's personality style through the use of Millon's (1969/1996) Biosocial-Learning Theory. Alexander's model of data extraction and Miles and Huberman's three step approach were implemented in order to reduce, organise and analyse the data. The findings of this study reflected that Helen deteriorated from one of Millon's (1969/1996) proposed personality styles to another as she aged. The current findings may illuminate Helen's motives for obsessively devoting her life to the creation of her fantasy world.

This thesis seeks to explore how young, educated and seemingly liberated women construct their identities and make sense of their futures around their heterosexual relationships. Using the experiences of eight women participants engaged in long-term heterosexual relationships, combined with relevant secondary literature, issues of sexuality, identity, power and intimacy are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the implications of their identity construction and how they 'perform' their roles as women in society. How their sexual stories reflect their positioning in society is premised by the phrase, 'the personal is political' . Through analysis of the participants' experiences mixed with theoretical arguments, this thesis finds that young women are apparently sexually, economically and intellectually liberated but locked into discourses that provide highly unequal, limiting, disempowering and oppressive understandings of masculinity, femininity and sexuality. They live and experience a reality which is far from liberated.

Resumo: Em 1978, Michel Foucault escreveu uma série de artigos jornalísticos para o periódico italiano "Corriere della Sera". Intituladas "reportagens de ideias", tinham como objetivo acompanhar o nascimento das ideias no cruzamento com os acontecimentos do tempo presente. No âmbito deste projeto, realizou duas viagens ao Irã (em setembro e novembro), onde acompanhou de perto a movimentação popular durante os eventos da Revolução Islâmica. Para compreender as raízes da oposição ao governo do xá Reza Pahlavi em seus diversos locais de manifestação, Foucault não se restringiu a conversar com os líderes revolucionários, mas entrevistou diferentes categorias de manifestantes, desde os trabalhadores organizados até os profissionais liberais e intelectualizados, passando pelos diversos níveis de organizações religiosas espalhadas pelo país, dos mulás líderes tribais aos aiatolás das grandes cidades de Qom e Teerã. O que lhe interessava era assistir ao nascimento de uma nova forma de pensar entre os iranianos, e isto só seria possível se ele estivesse lá, em meio ao fervilhar revolucionário. O conjunto de textos, que compreende também artigos, manifestos e entrevistas publicados na imprensa francesa, foi objeto de enorme polêmica, principalmente devido aos desdobramentos posteriores à revolução, com a instauração de uma ditadura teocrática de caráter persecutório às minorias e aos direitos humanos, e permaneceram até hoje pouco explorados teoricamente. Esta dissertação pretende analisar as reportagens iranianas de Foucault a partir de sua construção textual, dos conceitos introduzidos e das diversas interpretações que as cercam. Estrutura-se, assim, em três eixos: o primeiro tem o objetivo de recuperar a trama conceitual interna às reportagens; o segundo, analisar as críticas recebidas e seu contexto teórico; o terceiro, apresentar a espiritualidade política como principal inovação introduzida no corpus teórico foucaultiano. Abstract: In 1978 Michel Foucault wrote a series of news articles for the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera". Called "journalism of ideas", the articles had the purpose of following the birth of ideas upon its crossing with present times¿ events. Within the scope of this project, he made two trips to Iran (in September and November), where he followed up close the popular movement during the events of the Islamic Revolution. In order to grasp the roots of the opposition to the Shah Reza Pahlavi government in its several places of manifestation, Foucault did not restrain himself to talking to revolutionary leaders but rather also interviewed different categories of protestors, from organized workers to independent and intellectualized professionals, going through the several level of religious organizations spread out through the country, from mullah tribal leaders to Ayatollahs of the large cities of Qom and Tehran. Foucault was interested in witnessing the birth of a new form of thinking among Iranians and it would only be possible if he would be there present, amidst the revolutionary effervescence. The set of texts, which comprises also articles, manifestos and interviews published by the French press was object of great polemic, mainly due to the unfolding of events following the revolution, with the instauration of a theocratic dictatorship having a persecutory nature against minorities and human rights, and remaining until nowadays not much theoretically explored. This dissertation has the purpose of analyzing the Iranian reportages by Foucault from its textual construction, of concepts introduced and several interpretations surrounding them. Therefore, this paper is structured in three axis, the first having the purpose of retrieving the internal conceptual scheme of the reportages; the second being the analysis of criticism received and its theoretical context; the third being to present the political spirituality as the main innovation introduced to Foucault¿s theoretical framework. It is intended to emphasize yet the resonances of the Iranian texts in other issues elaborated by Foucault

Resumo: O presente estudo está pautado pela possibilidade de leitura da obra cortazariana com base em um aspecto relevante de sua trajetória: a dedicação não apenas à ficção, mas também à crítica. Partindo da poética de Cortázar acerca do conto, surgem algumas metáforas e comparações para definir o gênero e para tratar do ato de narrar. Essas metáforas têm diversas entonações ao longo da obra, configurando não apenas uma recorrência temática que atravessa textos ensaísticos e narrativos, mas também uma contaminação dos registros ficcional e crítico. As referências à fotografia e ao jazz, como parâmetros para a construção literária, são temas de reflexão em ensaios que assumem alguns traços ficcionais e são motivos narrativos em contos perpassados pela dimensão crítica. Os contos assumem o discurso crítico dentro de sua própria estrutura, questionando o ato de narrar; os ensaios, muitas vezes, têm a estratégia argumentativa baseada na constituição de uma imagem e no recurso ao anedótico; os textos que compõem os livros-almanaque transitam entre a ficção, o autobiográfico e o ensaístico. Desse modo, a comparação entre conto e fotografia, discutida em "Algunos aspectos del cuento" (1962), já havia sido ficcionalizada no conto "Las babas del diablo" (1959) e é retomada em "Apocalipsis de Solentiname" (1977) e em "Ventanas a lo insólito (1978); a busca por uma linguagem desautomatizada, proposta no ensaio "Para una poética" (1954), é trabalhada em "Las babas del diablo" e em "Diario para un cuento" (1982); o princípio analógico explicitado em "Para una poética" culmina no conceito de figura - uma nova forma de percepção da realidade e um efeito buscado nos contos -, retomado em "Cristal con una rosa dentro" (1969), texto cujo gênero é difícil definir e que compõe um dos livrosalmanaque cortazarianos; os "takes", propostos em "Melancolía de las maletas" (1967) como parâmetro para a literatura, parecem definir o movimento narrativo de "Las babas del diablo" e de "Diario para un cuento".
Abstract: This work aims at identifying the reading possibilities in Cortázar's works, based on an important aspect of the author?s path: his commitment not only to fiction, but also to literary criticism. From Cortázar's poetics regarding short stories, it is possible to identify metaphors and similes created in order to define the literary genre and to address the narrative act. Such metaphors assume several intonations throughout the author's work, configuring not only the recurrence of themes which is present in essays and narratives, but also the traces of contamination of fictional writings and critiques. The references to photography and to jazz as parameters for the literary construction are the object of analysis in essays that assume some fictional traces and constitute narrative motifs in short stories which span the dimension of criticism. Cortázar's short novels assume the critical discourse in its own structure, questioning the narrative act; the essays, many times, adopt an argumentative strategy based on the constitution of an image and resort to the anecdotal; the texts that compose the "almanac" books shift between fiction, autobiography and essay. Therefore, the comparison between short story and photography, which is discussed in "Algunos aspectos del cuento" (1962), had already been turned into fiction in the short story entitled "Las babas del diablo" (1959) and is discussed again in "Apocalipsis de Solentiname" (1977) and in "Ventanas a lo insólito" (1978); in "Las babas Del diablo" and "Diário para um cuento", Cortázar is in the quest for a language that is not automated, and such quest is also present in the essay "Para una poética" (1954); the analogy principle shown in "Para una poética" reaches its highest point with the concept of figure - a new form of perception of reality and effect which Cortázar looks for in his short stories -, which is recurrent in "Cristal con una rosa dentro" (1969), a text whose genre cannot be easily defined and that is part of one of Cortázar's "almanac" books; the "takes" proposed in "Melancolía de las maletas" (1967) as literary parameter seem to establish the narrative movement in "Las babas del diablo" and "Diario para un cuento".

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand how early adolescents talk about cross-racial and cross-ethnic friendships. Gordon Allport's intergroup contact theory provided the framework for studying the elements needed for inter-racial and inter-ethnic friendship formation. Qualitative data were drawn from four separately recorded peer group conversations. Participants (n=18) were recruited from Parrish Middle School in Salem, Oregon. Patterns that emerged from the data were sorted, categorized and identified according to the tenets of intergroup contact theory or extensions of intergroup contact theory. Analysis also looked at the use of metaphors and storytelling among adolescents. Results showed that while intergroup contact theory tenets of interdependence and common goals can foster cross-ethnic and cross-racial friendships, most students form these friendships through friendship chaining and common interests. Dual racial identity and peer group influence can also be positive factors in cross-racial and cross-ethnic friendship development. Further, storytelling examples by adolescents showed similar techniques to those used by adults. Overall the results from this study support intergroup contact theory as continuing to be a useful conceptual framework for encouraging cross-group relations.

In her bibliography, Incidents in the life of a Salve Girl, Harriet Ann Jacobs appropriates the autobiographical "I" in order to tell her own story of slavery and talk back to the dominant culture that enslaves her. Through analysis and explication of the text, this thesis examines Jacobs' rhetorical and psyshological evolution from slave to self as she struggles against patriarchal power that would rob her of her identity as well as her freedom. Included in the discussion is an analysis of the concept of self in western plilosophy, an overview of american autobiography prior to the publication of Jacobs' narrative, a discussion of the history of the slave narrative as a genre, and a discussion of the history of Jacobs' narrative.

This dissertation provides an exploration of the nature and scope of the category of the Unconscious as a necessary feature of rhetorical theory and criticism. In order to demonstrate the fundamental importance of the Unconscious to rhetorical theory and criticism, this dissertation focuses on Kenneth Burke's rhetorical theory of Dramatism. Burke is one of the most frequently cited theorists by rhetorical scholars, and offers a familiar site for rhetorical scholars to understand the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor. Burke formulated a theory of the Unconscious by drawing from Freudian psychoanalysis. Since Freud, Jacques Lacan has advanced and altered the Freudian understanding of the Unconscious. Therefore, by navigating the terrain of both Burkeian and Lacanian scholarship, this dissertation moves toward a BurkeLacanian theory and method to offer a more critical lexicon for the rhetorical study of the dialectical relationship between the conscious and Unconscious parts of the psyche. In doing so, this dissertation develops and answers the following questions: How can we theorize the Unconscious as a rhetorical factor? How is Burke's theory of the Unconscious rhetorically useful? How might we understand Burke's theory of rhetoric differently and better if we read his Freudian influences through Lacanian scholarship on the Unconscious? How is a theory of the BurkeLacanian subject rhetorically useful? How does a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious inform productive criticism? This dissertation applies a BurkeLacanian theory of the Unconscious by introducing a rhetorical method called "Ideographic Cluster Quilting." This method moves toward the rhetorical study of texts as cultural psyches that are constructed from fragments of discourse that form around figures of abjection. In order to demonstrate the usefulness for studying Ideographic Cluster Quilts, this dissertation analyzes the cultural psyche that forms around the figure of the "illegal immigrant" as abject. In doing so, we gain an insight into the Unconscious hatred of humanity as the perverse core of American identity that qualifies which bodies do and do not matter. We will also gain an insight into the way nationalistic identities function within globalization by confining labor forces within national boundaries, while multinational corporations move freely around the world.
