The East African species of the millipede tribe Pachybolini are revised. Three new genera are described: Crurifarcimen n. gen. (monotypic, type species: C. vagans n. sp., Tanzania), Hyperbolus n. gen. (type species: H. apicomplexus n. sp., Tanzania and Uganda; further species: H. morogoroensis Kraus, 1958, Tanzania, transferred from Pachybolus), Parabolus n. gen. (type species: Trigoniulus dimorphus Carl, 1909, Tanzania, transferred from Pachybolus, further species: P. calceus n. sp., Kenya). Hadrobolus Cook, 1897 and its only species, H. crassicollis (Peters, 1855), Mozambique, are redescribed. Epibolus bravensis (Silvestri, 1897) and E. mossabicensis Lawrence, 1967, are both synonymised under E. pulchripes (Gerstäcker, 1873), Somalia to Mozambique, rendering Epibolus Cook, 1897, monotypic. Pachybolus Cook, 1897, is restricted to its poorly known type species, P. tectus Cook, 1897, Zanzibar. A cladistic analysis of Pachybolini (W Africa, E Africa, Madagascar) does not support monophyly of the East African genera, but does support a clade consisting of Crurifarcimen+Hyperbolus+Parabolus, as well as monophyly of the two latter genera.

Abstract:
Thorell (1897) erected the monotypic genus Palicanus based on a single male specimen from Yangon (formerly Rangoon) in Myanmar (formerly Burma). Initially the genus was placed in Drassidae Sundevall, 1833, which later became a junior synonym of Gnaphosidae Pocock, 1898. The genus was subsequently transferred to Clubionidae Wagner, 1887 (Simon 1897) and finally to Miturgidae Simon, 1886 (Lehtinen 1967). Palicanus caudatus Thorell, 1897 is notable because of its mouse-grey appearance (Deeleman-Reinhold 2001) and is currently known to occur in China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Reunion Island and Seychelles (World Spider Catalog 2019). Gravely (1931) described Systaria barkudensis (Gravely, 1931), originally placed under Syrisca Simon, 1886, on the basis of specimens collected from the Indian state of Odisha. The species was redescribed once (Majumder & Tikader 1991) and later it was transferred to Systaria Simon, 1897 (Deeleman-Reinhold 2001). In this paper, we synonymise S. barkudensis with P. caudatus and provide supplementary information on the somatic morphology and male genitalia with detailed illustrations.

The genus Sciadiocara Skrjabin, 1916 is revised and the following species are recognized: Sciadiocara umbellifera (Molin, 1860); Sciadiocara bihamata (Mueller, 1897) with Sciadiocara denticulata Gibson, 1972 as its new synonym; Sciadiocara legendrei Petter, 1967; Sciadiocara serrata Wang, 1966; Sciadiocara cucullatus (Wehr, 1934); Sciadiocara chabaudi Schmidt and Kinsella, 1972; and Sciadiocara rugosa Schmidt and Kinsella, 1972. Sciadiocara secunda Skrjabin, 1916 is considered a nomen nudum. All species except S. legendrei and S. serrata are redescribed.

These six species are described herein in detail. New observations on the outer shell layer structure of the right valve and the pore-canal system of the left valve led to amending the diagnoses of the g|eneraBarrettiaWoodward, 1862,ParastromaDouvillé, 1926, andPraebarrettiaTrechmann, 1924. Also, the revision of Chiapas’ and other American species of multiple-fold hippuritids led to proposed changes in their generic adscription.

Abstract:
This thesis is a report on a "rereading" (in the sense in which Roland Barthes uses the word) of the short texts of Boerneef (Izak Wilhelmus van der Merwe 1897-1967) published under the title Boplaas in 1938. Boerneef's prose is explored with specific reference to this one volume. The unity of the volume of texts is examined and textual indications of relations with other texts in the oeuvre are explored. In this way the thesis indicates how transtextuality determines meaning both in the individual texts as well as in the volume as a whole. The process of (re)reading in this thesis traces how, as a result of the exploration of the textual elements, a Boplaas code is generated. This Boplaas code signifies both the space and the ethos of Boplaas. Paternalism, feudalism and racism manifest themselves as important aspects of the ethos. The social disintegration which is endemic in this ethos is not caused, but merely accelerated by external impulses. The analysis indicates how, as a result of the specific organization of the narrative material, the text questions the feudal status quo. A process of demythologising of the vroegre boere-paradijs is therefore already present in the earliest Boerneef texts. However, the examination of Boerneef's prose also indicates that these texts go beyond the socio-politico-economic aspects by encoding the existential aspects of man's existence.
Hierdie proefskrif is die vers lag van 'n "rereading" (in die Barthesiaanse sin) van Boerneef (Izak Wi lhelmus van der Merwe 1897- 1967) se bundel Boplaas (1938). Die prosa van Boerneef word verken met spesifieke toespitsing op die een bundel . Die bundel-eenheid word ondersoek en tekstuele leidrade wat geledinge met ander tekste in die oeuvre aandui , word gevolg. Hierdeur word aangetoon hoe die betekenis en die be-tekenisprosesse van die tekste onderling, en die bundel as 'n geheel, op transtekstuele samehang berus. In hierdie leesproses word nagegaan hoe, deur middel van die ontginning van die tekstuele elemente, 'n Boplaas-kode in die narratiewe proses tot stand kom. Hierdie Boplaas-kode beteken 'n Boplaas-ruimte asook 'n Boplaas-etos. Paternalisme, feodalisme en rassisme word as belangrike aspekte van hierdie bestel geenkodeer en die tekste toon aan dat sosiale versplintering endemies aan die betrokke orde is en slegs deur impulse van buite verhaas word. In die bundel-analise word aangetoon hoe, as gevolg van die organisasie van die vertel stof, hierdie bundel bevraagtekenend ten opsigte van die feodale status quo staan. As gevolg hiervan is daar dus alreeds in die vroegste prosa van Boerneef 'n demitologisering van die "vroegre boere- paradijs" ingebed. Die ondersoek toon egter ook aan dat die Boplaas-tekste by die sosiopolitiko- ekonomiese dimensies verby óók die eksistensële aspekte van die mens se betstaan be-teken.

Explica la relación entre modernidad, vanguardia y cosmopolitismo en la obra de Alberto Hidalgo. Para ello utiliza el libro de cuentos Los sapos y otras personas (1927) publicado en Buenos Aires, así como la novela Aquí está el Anticristo (1957) publicado también en la ciudad bonaerense. Por otro lado, considera como hipótesis: a) en la narrativa de vanguardia de Alberto Hidalgo la representación del espacio urbano proyecta una visión vanguardista concomitante a la experiencia modernizadora rioplatense, además el paradigma urbano que atraviesa toda su obra narrativa la devela como cosmopolita, b) la narrativa de vanguardia de Hidalgo posee un carácter heterogéneo y ecléctico; y c) la narrativa hidalguiana nos presenta cómo el hombre moderno busca adaptarse —o integrarse— a los espacios modernos. En consecuencia, estas hipótesis inauguran una reflexión en torno al papel que jugaron las ciudades en la narrativa de vanguardia de Hidalgo. Dicho en otros términos y a partir del objetivo propuesto por la investigación, las hipótesis se plantean develar el carácter urbano que posee la vanguardia cosmopolita del autor en mención. El método que utiliza para examinar la narrativa de vanguardia de Alberto Hidalgo provendrá del estudio narratológico, especialmente del análisis espacial, desarrollado por Luz Aurora Pimentel (2001). Además, ha optado por distintas bases teóricas en torno a las relaciones de modernidad, vanguardia y cosmopolitismo con el propósito de establecer una articulación interdisciplinaria que sea aprovechada cuando se recurra metodológicamente a la narratología. Y es que a partir de la representación del espacio en los textos de Hidalgo se puede observar los alcances de la sociología urbana de Georg Simmel (2005 [1903]) y Walter Benjamin (1998).

Le terme « patrimoine » désigne au sens propre les biens dont on a hérité de ses ascendants. Par analogie, il s’est étendu aux richesses collectives qui se transmettent de génération en génération. Alors que le parallèle entre les deux acceptions du mot est bien connu, les chercheurs se sont peu intéressés aux cas où le patrimoine familial et le patrimoine culturel se recoupent. Ce mémoire analyse donc le passage de l’un à l’autre afin d’éclairer les rapports entre les formes privée et publique de l’héritage. Pour ce faire, les successions de quatre artistes populaires québécois ont été étudiées dans une perspective ethnologique et historique : celles de Médard Bourgault (1897-1967), d’Arthur Villeneuve (1910-1990), de Léon Bouchard (1920-2012) et de Léonce Durette (1932-2011). Chacun a légué à sa famille un terrain ou un domicile où il avait déployé ses créations. Les trajectoires intergénérationnelles de ces quatre « environnements d’art populaire » permettent de comprendre comment et pourquoi la patrimonialisation d’un objet de famille peut s’opérer à la deuxième génération grâce à la collaboration, voire à l’activisme de ses légataires.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand how early adolescents talk about cross-racial and cross-ethnic friendships. Gordon Allport's intergroup contact theory provided the framework for studying the elements needed for inter-racial and inter-ethnic friendship formation. Qualitative data were drawn from four separately recorded peer group conversations. Participants (n=18) were recruited from Parrish Middle School in Salem, Oregon. Patterns that emerged from the data were sorted, categorized and identified according to the tenets of intergroup contact theory or extensions of intergroup contact theory. Analysis also looked at the use of metaphors and storytelling among adolescents. Results showed that while intergroup contact theory tenets of interdependence and common goals can foster cross-ethnic and cross-racial friendships, most students form these friendships through friendship chaining and common interests. Dual racial identity and peer group influence can also be positive factors in cross-racial and cross-ethnic friendship development. Further, storytelling examples by adolescents showed similar techniques to those used by adults. Overall the results from this study support intergroup contact theory as continuing to be a useful conceptual framework for encouraging cross-group relations.

Abstract:
La gran depresión de la década de 1930 tuvo diversos efectos en América Latina, siendo uno de los principales la idea de mayor participación del Estado en las economías nacionales ante la deslegitimación del modelo primario-exportador vigente. En ese contexto, diversos instrumentos fueron puestos en marcha para lograr una mayor autonomía económica y el ansiado desarrollo industrial, dentro de los cuales estarían los bancos de fomento. Con la intención de transferir de manera dirigida los recursos públicos a sectores que se consideraban estratégicos, los gobiernos latinoamericanos impulsaron esta banca de desarrollo para proveer de capitales a sectores relacionados con el mercado interno, el sector industrial y a la transferencia tecnológica. Para el caso peruano, uno de los bancos de fomento fue el Banco Industrial del Perú (junto con el agrario y el minero), aunque en un inicio no tuvo un impulso tan profundo como en otros países de la región, ya que el compromiso con el desarrollo hacia adentro y la promoción de la industrialización no era parte de la estrategia de desarrollo peruana. Sin embargo, a medida que pasaron las décadas, las necesidades de promover una diversificación colocaron al paradigma industrial cada vez más cerca de las políticas económicas. En ese sentido, se identifican cuatro etapas básicas del desarrollo de la institución. La primera, entre 1936 y 1956, se observa el nacimiento y el desarrollo inicial como reacción a los choques externos de la crisis de los años treinta y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero sin llegar a insertarse como parte de la estrategia de desarrollo. Esto último queda en evidencia al observar el manejo de la institución durante el gobierno de Manuel Odría (1948-1956). La segunda etapa, entre 1956 y 1968, se caracteriza por los incentivos que genera las fuertes migraciones a las zonas urbanas, los efectos de las nuevas caídas de nuestras exportaciones de materias primas y nuevos gobiernos más comprometidos con el desarrollo industrial y el mercado interno, como el segundo periodo de Manuel Prado y el primero de Fernando Belaúnde. La tercera etapa, entre 1969 y 1979, tiene un crecimiento en el contexto del gobierno revolucionario, donde el paradigma del desarrollo se caracterizó por una intervención más profunda del Estado en la economía. Finalmente, el cuarto periodo, de 1980 a 1990, en un contexto de recesión económica producto de la 4 crisis de la deuda y la hiperinflación, la institución no va a soportar los niveles de morosidad de las industrias y entrará en proceso de liquidación. La historiografía peruana no ha visto más que de una manera tangencial el desempeño del Banco Industrial del Perú, por lo que la presente investigación pretende reconstruir su desarrollo a largo plazo para identificar los aportes y las limitaciones que tuvieron para fomentar la industria en el Perú, en el periodo del paradigma industrialista latinoamericano del siglo XX.

Ce que nous nommons ici le réseau Carter fut un service secret de renseignements financé à l'aide des fonds d'urgence présidentiels, fonds octroyés en vertu du Military Appropriation Act, qui mena de nombreuses opérations sans aucun statut officiel pour le compte personnel du président Roosevelt de 1941 à 1945. À la tête de ce réseau figurait un dénommé John Franklin Carter, un éditorialiste libéral travaillant aussi à titre de romancier et rédacteur de discours. Jusqu'à ce jour, il n'existe aucun ouvrage de synthèse consacré au réseau Carter alors que certaines de ses assignations les plus importantes ont fait l'objet d'études spécifiques. À l'aide des monographies existantes sur le sujet et de sources, dont l'essentiel est constitué de mémorandums de Carter à l'intention du Président, notre recherche propose un bilan et une évaluation des principales assignations de l'agence Carter, ainsi qu'un examen de l'évolution organisationnelle de ladite agence. L'observation des divers champs d'activités du réseau nous amènera aussi à traiter d'assignations peu ou non étudiées. En procédant ainsi, nous montrerons que le réseau Carter fut utile à Roosevelt puisqu'il constituait un canal d'informations supplémentaires permettant à ce dernier de bénéficier d'un service capable de contourner son propre système de renseignement, d'épier et d'évaluer les services de renseignement concurrents ou toute autre personne ou organisation suspecte aux yeux du Président, de fournir des analyses politiques et du renseignement tant étranger que domestique, et finalement d'être une organisation capable de mener secrètement des projets spéciaux. Selon nous, grâce aux services du réseau Carter, Roosevelt bénéficiait d'un outil qui, sans être le plus important parmi ceux à sa disposition, était unique en son genre et comportait des fonctionnalités multiples. En somme, nous soutenons que malgré des lacunes évidentes, le réseau Carter contribua tout de même à l'effort de guerre et aida à l'instauration d'un système de renseignement plus efficace. De fait, nous soutiendrons que le réseau Carter fut utile, sans toutefois être important. Abstract:
Chapter one discusses the urban plans and transformations enacted by the British, and foregrounds the chapters dedicated to each of the buildings. British urban schemes devised by William Hannah Mclean (1877–1967), Sir Patrick Geddes (1854-1932), Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942), Albert Clifford Holliday (1897-1960) and Henry Kendall (1903-?), are analysed in light of the Mandate system and its interpretations. I argue that Jerusalem’s multicultural contested space unsettles accepted premises that regard Palestine as a belated “British Colony.” The chapter demonstrates this by investigating plans and development of the city, and by discussing British intentions, interventions and the mandatory discourses that supported these.

Abstract:
In 1897, Stèphane Mallarme threaded this phrase through his culminating work of modern poetry ‘Un Coup de Des’. Michael Snow, commenting on his 1967 film Wavelength, another radical work of modernist vision, invoked Mallarme’s phrase and sets us thinking about how the moving image recreates/explores/questions the nature of place. The radical role of the moving image in providing new modes of our experience of space has been neglected or simply presented as a deviant deconstruction of a dominant commercial narrative cinema. Taking seriously the way the moving image provides new tools for our understanding of our place in a technological world, I will discuss moments of camera movement and the mobile frame in cinema practice, both commercial and avant-garde, historical and contemporary.

Abstract:
Since the publication of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula in 1897, the character of Count Dracula has proven to be eminently adaptable, appearing in various guises in over 300 feature films – from FW Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922) through to Dario Argento’s Dracula 3D (2012). As with other iconic characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Batman, Dracula has been freed from his roots in a source text and entered what Will Brooker describes as ‘the realm of the icon’. Yet, while there has been a considerable amount of scholarship on the canonical adaptations of Dracula produced in Hollywood, the UK and Germany, very little has been written on the numerous adaptations of the Count Dracula character that have appeared in other film industries. This chapter considers examples of transnational film remakes, including the 1953 Turkish film Drakula İstanbul'da (Dracula in Istanbul), the 1957 Mexican film El Vampiro (The Vampire), and the 1967 Pakistani film Zinda Laash (The Living Corpse). Paying close attention to the variety of ways in which the character is utilised across different cultural contexts, this chapter interrogates the complex issues that this raises in relation to the dynamic interplay of global and local within international popular cinema.
