Abstract:
<p class="p1">This article seeks to analyze the linkages between the Imperial German Navy and Germany’s domestic sphere from the years 1897 to 1918. Prior scholarship has suggested that the expansion of the Imperial German Navy, beginning in 1897, was strongly caused by internal domestic factors. This article disagrees with this assertion, pointing out how international concerns were the main motivating factor. Nonetheless, the paper does accept the general premise that the navy played a strong role in Germany’s domestic sphere. To this end, this article analyzes how, prior to World War One, the navy was built into a national symbol aimed at overcoming the German empire’s regional particularities. This article then bridges a gap in existing scholarship by linking the pre-war symbolic importance of the navy to its experience during the war and the naval revolts that occurred in 1918. In particular, this article argues that the national idea codified in the navy prior to the war was then challenged by the navy’s generally poor experience during the First World War. This contributed to the naval revolts of 1918 which caused a reevaluation of the German nation and toppled the empire.</p>

AbstractThis is one of a series of articles about pharmacists in Lublin district, in the 19th and 20th c. The first recorded owner of the pharmacy in Adamów was Aleksander Biernacki (1851-1897), who passed it onto his son-in-law, Aleksander Rogoziński (1873-1941), and who, in turn, passed it onto his son, Stanisław Rogoziński (1913-1998), married to Tatiana (1918-1998). This family's history is an example of the history of Polish intelligentsia in the second half of 19th c., in the times of the Russian partition, World War I, 1918-1939, World War II and until contemporary times.

De zogenaamde 'Houthakkers van de Orne' waren enkele Vlaamsgezinde frontsoldaten die in 1918 van het oorlogsfront werden verwijderd en naar een (houthakkers)kamp in Normandië werden gezonden. Zij werden pas enkele maanden nà de wapenstilstand van 11 november 1918 gedemilitariseerd. Binnen de Vlaamse beweging werden zij aanzien als martelaren-van-de-goede-zaak, die uitgerekend omwille van hun Vlaamse idealen tot zware arbeid in Franse strafkampen werden verplicht. Het mythische symbool van de 'Vlaamse houthakkers' was het radicaal lid van de Frontbeweging Ward Hermans (1897-1992): mede door zijn bekendheid terzake, werd hij VNV-parlementslid; hij legde daarbij als radicale flamingant een betwist parcours af. They were not demilitarized until a few months after the armistice of 11 November 1918. Within the Flemish movement they were regarded as martyrs of the good cause, who – specifically because of their Flemish ideals – had been made to do forced labour in French prison camps. Ward Hermans (1897-1992), the radical member of the Front Movement, was the mythical symbol of the ‘Flemish Lumbermen’: in part because of the reputation he derived from this, he became a VNV-(Flemish National Union) member of Parliament; as a radical supporter of the Flemish movement he thus followed a questionable path. The Australasian spiny trapdoor spiders of the family Idiopidae (subfamily Arbanitinae) are revised at the generic level, using a multi-locus molecular phylogenetic foundation and comprehensive sampling of all known lineages. We propose a new family- and genus-group classification for the monophyletic Australasian fauna, and recognise 10 genera in four tribes. The Arbanitini Simon includes Arbanitis L. Koch, 1874 (61 species), Blakistonia Hogg, 1902 (one species) and Cantuaria Hogg, 1902 (43 species). The Aganippini Simon includes Bungulla Rix, Main, Raven &amp; Harvey, gen. nov. (two species), Eucanippe Rix, Main, Raven &amp; Harvey, gen. nov. (one species), Eucyrtops Pocock, 1897 (two species), Gaius Rainbow, 1914 (one species) and Idiosoma Ausserer, 1871 (14 species). The Cataxiini Rainbow and Euoplini Rainbow include just Cataxia Rainbow, 1914 (11 species) and Euoplos Rainbow, 1914 (12 species), respectively. Two distinctive new genera of Aganippini are described from Western Australia, and several previously valid genera are recognised as junior synonyms of existing genus-group names, including Misgolas Karsch, 1878 (= Arbanitis; new synonymy), Aganippe O. P.-Cambridge, 1877 (= Idiosoma; new synonymy) and Anidiops Pocock, 1897 (= Idiosoma; new synonymy). Gaius stat. rev. is further removed from synonymy of Anidiops. Other previously hypothesised generic synonyms are supported by both morphology and molecular phylogenetic data from 12 genes, including the synonymy of Neohomogona Main, 1985 and Homogona Rainbow, 1914 with Cataxia, and the synonymy of Albaniana Rainbow &amp; Pulleine, 1918, Armadalia Rainbow &amp; Pulleine, 1918, Bancroftiana Rainbow &amp; Pulleine, 1918 and Tambouriniana Rainbow &amp; Pulleine, 1918 with Euoplos. At the species level, the identifications of Eucy. latior (O. P.-Cambridge, 1877) and I. manstridgei (Pocock, 1897) are clarified, and three new species are described: Bungulla bertmaini Rix, Main, Raven &amp; Harvey, sp. nov., Eucanippe bifida Rix, Main, Raven &amp; Harvey, sp. nov. and Idiosoma galeosomoides Rix, Main, Raven &amp; Harvey, sp. nov., the latter remarkable for its phragmotic abdominal morphology. The Tasmanian species Mygale annulipes C. L. Koch, 1842 is here transferred to the genus Stanwellia Rainbow &amp; Pulleine, 1918 (family Nemesiidae), comb. nov., Arbanitis mestoni Hickman, 1928 is transferred to Cantuaria, comb. nov. and Idiosoma hirsutum Main, 1952 is synonymised with I. sigillatum (O. P.-Cambridge, 1870), new synonymy. In addition to the morphological synopses and an illustrated key to genera, molecular diagnoses are presented for all nominal taxa, along with live habitus and burrow images to assist in field identification. The Australasian idiopid fauna is highly diverse, with numerous new species known from all genera. A presente pesquisa investiga as epidemias de febre amarela - em 1897 e 1900 - e de gripe espanhola - em 1918 - ocorridas em Sorocaba e a atuação do médico Álvaro César da Cunha Soares no seu combate, a fim de revelar as condições sanitárias de uma cidade que passava por grandes transformações, como o crescimento urbano e a industrialização, em um contexto de consolidação da medicina oficial e de acirrados debates em torno das questões relacionadas à saúde pública. Para tanto, traça-se um panorama das condições sanitárias e de saúde pública de Sorocaba entre o final do século XIX e o início do século XX, apontando o agravamento dos problemas sociais e o aumento do número de casos de determinadas enfermidades. Desse modo, pretende-se demonstrar como a condição de vida da população pobre sorocabana foi se deteriorando cada vez mais enquanto a cidade apresentava um relativo crescimento urbano e industrial. As epidemias de febre amarela são reconstituídas, abordando-se questões políticas, sociais e científicas que se desenrolaram no decorrer dos surtos epidêmicos, em um contexto de disputa entre o poder estadual, representado pelo Serviço Sanitário do Estado de São Paulo, e os poderes locais, representados por médicos e autoridades públicas municipais, na condução das medidas de combate às epidemias. A epidemia de gripe espanhola na cidade representou um desafio às autoridades públicas locais e uma ameaça à estabilidade econômica local - em um momento em que o crescimento industrial da cidade era colocado em evidência. Desse modo, estudando as epidemias que assolaram Sorocaba na virada do século XIX para o XX e acompanhando a atuação de Álvaro Soares nesse contexto, pretende-se compreender melhor a relação entre a consolidação da medicina oficial no Estado de São Paulo e suas implicações nas práticas em saúde pública
This research investigates epidemics of yellow fever - in 1897 and 1900 - and the Spanish flu - in 1918 - occurred in Sorocaba and the performance of the medical Álvaro César Soares da Cunha in combating them, in order to reveal the sanitary conditions of a city passing through major transformations, such as urban growth and industrialization, in a context of consolidation of official medicine and heated debates on issues related to public health. To this end, draws up an overview of public health and sanitary conditions of Sorocaba in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century, pointing to the worsening of social problems and the increasing number of cases of certain diseases. Thus, it is intended to demonstrate how the living conditions of the poor in Sorocaba was deteriorating more and more as the city had a relative urban and industrial growth. The yellow fever epidemics are reconstituted, addressing political, social and scientific issues that unfolded over the outbreaks, in a dispute context between state power, represented by the State Sanitation Service of São Paulo, and local authorities, represented by physicians and municipal authorities, in the conduct of measures to combat epidemics. The Spanish flu epidemic in the city was a challenge to local public authorities and a threat to local economic stability - at a time when the industrial growth of the city was placed in evidence. Thus, studying the epidemics that ravaged Sorocaba in the late nineteenth century to the twentieth and monitoring the performance of Alvaro Soares in this context, it is intended to better understand the relationship between the consolidation of official medicine in the State of São Paulo and its implications for practice in public health

Cette these tente de mettre a jour la genese d'une problematique sociologique de l'exclusion au travers des oeuvres de georg simmel et de norbert elias. En effet, les principes simmeliens et eliasiens de reciprocite d'action et d'interdependance entre l'individu et la societe peuvent permettre d'inventer et de developper une sociologie de l'echange, dans laquelle se combinent les diverses dimensions de l'apprehension des phenomenes actuels d'exclusion. Dans ce cadre theorique, il apparait alors que leur problematique de l'exclusion rassemble en son sein diverses categories de signification : "l'exclusion empirique", definie comme l'ensemble des phenomenes concrets et vecus de mise a l'ecart (sociale, economique, politique. . . ) ; et "l'exclusion ontologique", entendue comme la mise a distance de soi, necessaire a la formalisation des echanges entre les hommes. Dans ce sens, cette recherche tente d'articuler ces invariants humains pour degager et apprecier leurs degres et leurs modalites d'interdependance d'un point de vue sociologique. Il apparait alors que, pour georg simmel et norbert elias, la problematique de l'integration de l'individu au groupe, ou d'un petit groupe a l'ensemble social plus vaste, implique toujours et reciproquement la problematique inverse de l'exclusion. En outre, ces processus formels se trouvent accentues par les caracteristiques de la modernite, tant au niveau individuel que social. Dans cette perspective d'analyse, d'une part, la categorie ontologique de l'exclusion semble aujourd'hui revetir des formes exacerbees d'imposition ; et, d'autre part,elle semble parfois amplifier les logiques modernes d'exclusion empirique en accentuant l'ambivalence de positions que chaque individu entretient avec son groupe d'existence.

"The Journey Within" deals with how the receiver (reader/viewer) engages with the novel and the film. The thesis primarily focuses on Faulkner's novel, incorporating Persona largely as a means by which to illustrate the more carefully concealed reader-engagement strategies in Absalom, Absalom! Starting with a review of Faulkner criticism that opens itself up to this inquiry, the thesis leads into a detail study of the engagement strategies used to foster identification, alignment, sympathy, and empathy among receivers. Employing Umberto Eco's criticism involving "Model Readers" who "actualize" texts, as well as other reader and viewer response theory, I demonstrate that certain receivers experience a specific, heightened engagement with the work. This "Model" receiver restructures her ideologies to accord with what the work expects from her. Ultimately, this particular engagement leads to ontological participation in the work among its receivers. Martin Heidegger's phenomenological investigation, Being and Time, helps illustrate this ontological participation.

By the turn of the twentieth century, British and American evangelical Christianity was sharply divided over, among other things, the issues of biblical authority, the nature of the person and work of Christ and the validity of modern scientific thought. Dwight L. Moody, the major evangelical figure of the late nineteenth century, found himself in the centre of this controversy. As a man of conservative theology yet ecumenical spirit, both the Fundamentalists and the liberal evangelicals 'claimed' him for their cause. The tension which developed between these two sides is well illustrated in the lives and ministries of Moody's protégés, R. A. Torrey and Henry Drummond, who ended up on opposite sides of the modernist/Fundamentalist debate, one perpetuating Moody's theological beliefs and the other his broad, irenic spirit. Having examined the religious historical context in both Scotland and America, this study will consider Moody's development as an ecumenically minded evangelist. Furthermore, both in the Scottish and in the American settings, it will consider the work of Drummond and Torrey, examining Moody's influence upon them and tracing the development of each man's thought and career from the time of their early contacts with the great evangelist. It will explore the nature of the modern/Fundamentalist controversy within late nineteenth century evangelicalism as illustrated in the lives of these three men: Moody the mentor-father figure and Torrey and Drummond as unlikely stepbrothers. In addition to the theological issues, it will be concerned to investigate the spirit in which this debate was carried on. Most importantly, it will argue that, contrary to the claims of Fundamentalists to the present day, their movement did not perpetuate the work of D. L. Moody because it lost the warm catholicity which was integral to Moody's ministry.

Il s'agit d'une etude comparative relative aux annees 1920-1950 qui vise a mettre en evidence les choix litteraires accomplis par elio vittorini et georges bataille pendant la periode fasciste. La question politique-culture est posee a partir de l'analyse des cahiers de prison d'antonio gramsci ou l'ancien dirigeant du p. C. D'italie elabore la figure de << l'intellectuel organique >> (lieu d'unification de la theorie et de la pratique) et definit la nouvelle forme de << litterature nationale-populaire >>. Le travail essentiellement axe sur l'analyse des textes de fiction des deux ecrivains (notamment l'oeillet rouge et le bleu du ciel, dont il propose un commentaire) prend en compte aussi les autres ecrits (articles, journaux, essais) ou s'affirme la thematique politique. L'abandon de la publication des deux romans (dans le cas de vittorini et de l' oeillet rouge il est determine par l'intervention des autorites fascistes qui en commandent la saisie tandis que dans celui de bataille et du bleu du ciel il est voulu par l'ecrivain) relance la question de l'heteronomie de l'ecriture, de sa fonction critique et de la position de l'intellectuel a laquelle les deux prefaces redigees lors de la parution des deux romans apportent une reponse tout a fait differente. L'etude reserve une attention particuliere au corps comme lieu de l'expression et de la pratique de la revolte.

Questo lavoro ha avuto come oggetto di studio l'attività del movimento sionista nella penisola italiana tra Otto e Novecento, e più nello specifico sono stati analizzati il processo di diffusione della sua ideologia e i suoi maggiori esponenti a livello nazionale. Nel contempo è stato esaminato il particolare ruolo propagandistico della stampa ebraica attraverso un continuo confronto delle differenti opinioni e posizioni delle singole riviste sioniste e filo-sioniste italiane riguardo ad alcune delle principali questioni messe in campo dal movimento ebraico di rinascita nazionale. I periodici sono stati altresì utilizzati per esaminare quelle che furono le reazioni dei sionisti italiani di fronte ai maggiori eventi che toccarono direttamente o indirettamente la comunità ebraica (italiana e internazionale) tra Otto e Novecento. Un lavoro dunque sulle idee e gli atteggiamenti, sulle polemiche e le contraddizioni, che contraddistinsero il sionismo italiano tra la fine dell'Ottocento e il primo ventennio del Novecento. Il periodo esaminato è senz'altro fra i più interessanti, ma difficili e convulsi, della storia ebraica italiana. All'inizio del Novecento l'ebraismo italiano era immerso nel clima liberale dell'epoca post-emancipazionista: in gran parte della popolazione ebraica l'uscita dai ghetti fu intesa e vissuta come libertà da se stessi, ovvero dal mondo ebraico. La conseguenza più evidente di questa nuova condizione dell'ebraismo italiano fu la disgregazione del concetto unitario e globale della vita ebraica e la sua riduzione ad un mero fenomeno religioso, ovvero di coscienza personale. Il movimento sionista ebbe il merito di mettere a nudo le contraddizioni che erano emerse all'interno delle Comunità italiane in seguito ai processi di emancipazione e integrazione. Nella ricerca si sono impiegate e confrontate tre differenti tipologie di fonti: pubblicazioni a stampa (articoli e opuscoli), lettere private e documenti ufficiali della Federazione Sionistica Italiana e dei vari Circoli locali (corrispondenza del Presidente della Federazione, verbali, volantini di propaganda). Il lavoro si articola in otto capitoli, di cui i primi quattro sono organizzati in prevalenza su base tematica mentre gli ultimi seguono lo sviluppo prettamente cronologico del sionismo italiano. Il primo capitolo ha carattere introduttivo: vi presento una problematizzazione storiografica sulla questione dell'identità ebraica dopo l'emancipazione. Il secondo capitolo contiene uno studio sui periodici sionisti e filo-sionisti in lingua italiana, la fonte principale di questo lavoro, e i loro principi ispiratori, che per molti versi furono dissimili gli uni dagli altri; nel terzo cerco invece di estrinsecare le varie declinazioni che il concetto di «sionismo» assunse nelle riflessioni dei sionisti italiani. I capitoli dal quarto all'ottavo analizzano lo sviluppo del sionismo italiano fino alla prima Guerra Mondiale, con particolare attenzione ai suoi rapporti con il movimento internazionale (capitolo IV) e le conseguenze che su di esso ebbero i conflitti bellici dello Stato italiano (capitolo VIII); uno dei punti nodali del presente lavoro è rappresentato dall'ascesa e crisi dell'attivismo sionista in Italia (capitoli V e VI).

Resumo: Esta dissertação tem como tema a transformação da percepção do estranho na teoria social contemporânea ao longo do século xx. As abordagens do estranho na atualidade evidenciam que a exclusão social, o preconceito e a intolerância são os problemas mais agudos enfrentados pelos estranhos no mundo contemporâneo. Através de um mapeamento das abordagens de autores como Georg Simmel, Alfred SChütz, Norbert Elias e Zygmunt Bauman este trabalho mostra as variações da percepção do estranho. Nas abordagens do início do século XX, o lugar do estranho poderia ser facilmente distinguido, ao passo que as abordagens no final do século XX atestam uma generalização da condição do estranho no mundo globalizado. Simultaneamente, se constatou que as reivindicações com relação ao lugar do estranho na sociedade se deslocaram cada vez mais da questão da igualdade de direitos, para a questão do reconhecimento e da valorização das diferenças em uma sociedade crescentemente multicultural
Abstract: The subject of this thesis is the transformation of the perception of the stranger in modem social theory during the 20th century. Current approaches about the stranger show that social exclusion, prejudice and intolerance are the main challenges for strangers in our contemporary world. By mapping approaches of authors like Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Norbert Elias e Zygmunt Bauman the differences of the perception of the stranger could be demonstrated, reaching from approaches at the outset of the 20th century, in which the stranger occupied a place clearly separated from society, to approaches at the end of the 20th century, which recognize a certain generalisation of the condition of the stranger in our globalised world. Simultaneously, it could be observed that claims regarding the place of strangers in society have been more and more shifted from the question of equality of rights to the question of recognition and valuation of differences in an increasingly multicultural society
