Abstract:
Type material of species belonging to the weevil tribe Celeuthetini Lacordaire, 1863 mainly from Sundaland, Sulawesi and the Lesser Sunda Islands was studied. Mitochondrial sequence data could be obtained for 27 old type specimens, providing important evidence on their systematic placement. Various taxonomic problems evident from molecular and morphological data are remedied. Nusasyntrophus Riedel gen. n., Parasyntrophus Riedel gen. n., and Apotomorhamphus geminus Riedel sp. n. are described. The following genera are junior synonyms of Piezonotus Schoenherr, 1834: Coptorhynchus Guérin-Méneville, 1841 (syn. n.), Picronotus Marshall, 1956 (syn. n.), Platyspartus Faust, 1897 (syn. n.). Colpomus Marshall, 1956 is a junior synonym of Enaptomias Faust, 1897 (syn. n.) and Aulacophrys Marshall, 1956 is a junior synonym of Apiezonotus Heller, 1941. Coptorhynchus ternatensis Guérin-Méneville, 1841 and Isomerinthus asper Pascoe, 1881 are transferred to Piezonotus Schoenherr, 1834: Piezonotus ternatensis (Guérin-Méneville, 1841) (comb.n.), Piezonotus asper (Pascoe, 1881) (comb.n.). New synonymies are proposed for the following species: Syntrophus carinicollis (Heller, 1914) = Syntrophus costicollis Marshall, 1956 (syn. n.); Syntrophus echinatus (Heller, 1900) = Syntrophus bipusulosus (Heller, 1940) (syn. n.). Apotomorrhamphus heteroglymmoides Günther, 1938 and A. femoratus Voss, 1940 are transferred to Heteroglymma Faust, 1897: Heteroglymma heteroglymmoides (Günther, 1938) comb.n., Heteroglymma femoratum (Voss, 1940) comb.n.; Heteroglymma bispinosa Heller, 1900 and Heteroglymma hoplocnemis Günther, 1938 are transferred to Atactoglymma Heller, 1900: A. bispinosum (Heller, 1900) comb. n., A. hoplocnemis (Günther, 1938) comb. n.; Heteroglymma carinuliferum Heller, 1914 is transferred to Javaulius Marshall, 1956: Javaulius carinulifer (Heller, 1914) comb.n.; Idiopsodes gitgitus (Heller, 1914), Idiopsodes radiatifrons (Heller, 1914), and Idiopsodes setosapex (Heller, 1914) are transferred to Parasyntrophus gen. n.: Parasyntrophus gitgitus (Heller, 1914) comb. n., P. radiatifrons (Heller, 1914) comb. n., P. setosapex (Heller, 1914) comb. n.; Phraotes nodifer Voss, 1940 is transferred to Bonthaina Heller: Bonthaina nodifera (Voss, 1940) comb. n. Piezonotus humeralis Heller, 1914 is transferred to Temnogastrus Marshall, 1956: Temnogastrus humeralis (Heller, 1914) comb. n.; Heteroglymma echinatum Heller, 1900 and Trigonops bipusulosa Heller, 1940 are transferred to Nusasyntrophus gen. n.: Nusasyntrophus echinatus (Heller, 1900) comb. n., Nusasyntrophus bipusulosus (Heller, 1940) comb. n. Nusasyntrophus echinatus virescens (Heller, 1914) and Tarunus wolterecki banggaiensis (Günther, 1938) are elevated to species status: N. virescens (Heller, 1914) stat. n., comb. n., Tarunus banggaiensis (Günther, 1938) stat. n. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the dynamics of the number of Chechen Ingush in the late XIX-early XX century. The source on which the author of the article relies are the materials of the first General Population Census of the Russian Empire in 1897 and the reports of the ataman of the Tersk region for the years 1900-1905. The methodological basis of the research is a set of theoretical and methodological principles and approaches: objectivity and historicism. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that the issues of demographic and ethnic development of the North Caucasus have been in the focus of attention of researchers for many years and are of interest not only to historians, but also to representatives of other specialties. The relevance is also determined by the fact that from the end of the XIX century to the present, the ethnic map has undergone certain changes, but at the same time, the area of compact residence of the peoples of the region has remained without significant changes. The materials of the first General Population Census of the Russian Empire are unique, they make up a huge layer of statistical data and their qualified analysis can help in studying many issues related not only to the number and language, but also to the economy. The scientific novelty of the reviewed article is manifested in the introduction into scientific circulation of the reports of the Ataman of the Tersk region for the years 1900-1905 and the analysis of the materials of the first General Population Census of the Russian Empire in 1897. The territorial scope of the study covers the Tersk region. The purpose of the article emerges from the content of the article – to show the dynamics of changes in the number of Chechens and Ingush in the late XIX- early XX century. Based on the materials of the first General Population Census of 1897 and the reports of the Ataman of the Tersk region for 1900-1905, as well as the districts in which Chechens and Ingush lived, the number of urban population, etc. The article is an overview based on the conclusions made earlier by other authors.

The article is devoted to the design activity of the famous Belgian architect Victor Horta (1861–1947), one of the founders of the European art Nouveau (Art Nuoveau). The interest in this unique architect is due to the fact that he lived a very long and creative life, and left a huge creative heritage. In 1967, his best Art Nouveau works received a well-deserved recognition and became the property of world culture. The paper presents the analysis of architectural, compositional and structural features of a number of buildings erected in Brussels. Four of them are included in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites in 2000. Including the Tassel House (1892–1893), The Hôtel Solvay (1894–1900), The Hôtel van Eetvelde (1895–1897) and The Horta Museum (1898–1900). Abstract:
The article outlines the significance of Prussian military music of the 19th and early 20th centuries in an international context. It focuses on deliveries of musical instruments and sheet music by the Berlin company C. W. Moritz to Central and South America around 1900. The delivery lists of 1897/98 for the Colombian military bands show that they were equipped according to the Prussian model, which goes back to the ideas of Wilhelm Wieprecht. He reformed and standardised the Prussian military music system between the 1830s and 1860s, thus creating the basis for its success. The sheet music enclosed with the musical instruments gives an insight into the popular musical taste of the period around 1900, which was increasingly introduced to Central and South America. Future research will ask what impact such imports of music and musical instruments had on the development of music in Central and South America. (Vorlage)

Abstract:
The genus Hyperaulax Pilsbry, 1897 comprises two living species endemic to the oceanic Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, off north-eastern Brazil. They are currently allocated in two subgenera, Hyperaulax s. str. and Bonnanius Jousseaume, 1900, belonging to the family Odontostomidae. Herein we present a taxonomic revision of these species, assessing their familiar allocation within Orthalicoidea, offering updated diagnoses and descriptions, figuring the type materials and further relevant specimens, and providing barcoding DNA sequences. We conclude that Bonnanius is a junior synonym of Hyperaulax, which is classified in Odontostomidae. The genus contains two valid species, H. ridleyi and H. ramagei, both endemic to Fernando de Noronha.

Abstract:

AbstractMilitary physician Etienne Henrard has played an important role in both civil and military radiology. He was adjunct at the radiological department, created in 1897, in the military hospital in Brussels. In 1900, he equipped one of the first private cabinets in Brussels. He was especially interested in bone radiology, stereo-radiography and the localization of foreign bodies for which he invented, during the “Great War,” a device for their extraction. In 1905, he was one of the founding members of the Belgian Radiological Society where he also held many functions. In 1931, he was promoted to the rank of Physician-General.

Species of Ohvida differ from all other ctenid spiders by the presence of a retrodorsal projection on the cymbium of the male pedipalp and by a basal position of the lateral spurs on the female epigyne. The genus Celaetycheus Simon, 1897 is reviewed to only include its type species, C. flavostriatus Simon, 1897 from Brazil. We propose the following synonyms and new combinations: Ctenus ottleyi (Petrunkevitch, 1930) (= Celaetycheus strenuus Bryant, 1942 syn. nov. and C. modestus Bryant, 1942 syn. nov.); Ctenus delesserti (Caporiacco, 1947) comb. nov., and Leptoctenus paradoxus (F.O. Abstract:
Focused on colonial South India, this article presents and assesses detailed archival records of public health measures in response to plague outbreaks between 1900 and 1947. Starting in 1897 in the Madras Presidency, the colonial government strictly implemented anti-plague measures and introduced various health schemes and medical policies for plague prevention. However, despite partly vigorous government efforts, plague outbreaks could not be fully controlled. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the plague remains among South Asia’s most feared epidemics, with an outbreak in Surat in 1994 causing major havoc. Neither indigenous knowledge nor Western medical systems provided fully effective remedies regarding causation, cure and prevention of plague epidemics. Since the article gained new relevance in light of current struggles faced by India’s public health system in handling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some lessons from history emerge in the concluding discussion.

Abstract:
Regression is an important phenomenon in oncology. Two reviews in 2011 dealt at length with what in modern parlance may be called its permutations and combinations. Specifically, in both 1982 and 1987, when its occurrence in breast cancer was presented from two centers, the oldest accounts of it were dated back to 1900. Therefore, a search for much older English literature was undertaken in order to widen current knowledge of this important problem. Consequently, a published long case dating back to 1897 is abridged and a short 1846 case is also noted. Furthermore, general etiological concepts are exemplified as far back as 1753. It is concluded that the history of cancer regression is like fishing in an ocean of this illness. However, the findings are deemed to complement what modern historical accounts lack.

Abstract:
A XIX–XX. századi békefenntartói missziókban megvalósuló magyar részvételről nyújt tájékoztatást a tanulmány.

A tanulmány a békefenntartás XIX. századi magyar gyökeréig nyúlik vissza. A magyar békefenntartói tevékenység a XX. század második felében folytatódott. Először a vietnámi háború zárásának részeként vettek részt magyar katonák békefenntartásban.

Abstract:
In the six years from October 1897 to October 1903, Ndukwana kaMbengwana engaged in scores of conversations in numerous different locations with magistrate James Stuart about the history and culture of the nineteenth-century Zulu kingdom. In the 1880s Ndukwana had been a lowranking official in the native administration of Zululand; at an unknown date before late 1900 he seems to have become Stuart's personalindunaor “headman,” to give a common English translation. Stuart's handwritten notes of these conversations, as archived in the James Stuart Collection, come to a total of 65,000 to 70,000 words. As rendered in volume 4 of theJames Stuart Archive, published in 1986, these notes fill 120 printed pages, far more than the testimonies of any other of Stuart's interlocutors except Socwatsha kaPhaphu. From 1900, Ndukwana was also present during many of Stuart's conversations with other individuals. In the editors' preface to volume 4 of theJames Stuart Archive, after drawing attention to the length of Ndukwana's testimony, Colin Webb and I wrote as follows:Since these were the early years of Stuart's collecting career, it is probable that Ndukwana exercised a considerable influence on the presuppositions about Zulu society and history which Stuart took with him into his interviews. No less likely, however, is the reverse possibility that Ndukwana in turn became a repository of much of the testimony he heard while working with Stuart, and that, increasingly over the years, the information which he supplied would have been a fusion of data and traditions from a variety of sources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Quimsacocha National Recreation Area is located on the western slope of the Andes in Azuay Province, southern Ecuador. All sampling locations were in the high paramo and high Andean forests (3,572 to 3,865 m). The habitats include paramo, bogs, riparian, patches of elfin forests, and secondary cloud forest. We set Sherman, pitfall, and camera traps (3,600 trap nights), and mist nets to collect 117 specimens. Eight species were collected, including Caenolestes caniventer Anthony 1921; Didelphis pernigra J.A. Allen, 1900; Cryptotis montivagus (Anthony, 1921); Akodon mollis Thomas, 1894; Microryzomys altissimus (Osgood, 1933), Phyllotis haggardi Thomas, 1908; Sigmodon inopinatus Anthony, 1924; and Sylvilagus andinus (Thomas, 1897). Two additional species Coendou rufescens (Gray, 1865) and Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780) were documented photographically. This is the first survey that saved voucher specimens for mammals of Quimsacocha.

Abstract:
Abstract Studying the translations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, one of the most successful novels of all times, may reveal, even nowadays, several surprises. First published by Constable on 26 May 1897, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has never been out of print, and it has been translated into about 30 languages (Light 2009). This article starts with an analysis of some keywords in Bram Stoker’s sources on Transylvania and their translations from Romanian into English, and points to some inaccurate translations which influenced the novelist to locate the action in Transylvania and change the name of the main vampire character. The following subchapters examine the recent research on the first translations of Dracula, discussing the Hungarian translation (1898), the Swedish variant (1899) and the Icelandic versions (1900, 1901), and the last section is dedicated to the translation into Romanian, published in 1990.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The recent representatives of the subfamily Cyclocypridinae Kaufmann, 1900 are revised here, based on some newly collected Australian material, as well as an extensive study of type material of already described species deposited in various museums. The following two new genera are proposed: Kempfcyclocypris gen. nov. and Keysercypria gen. nov. The genus Kempfcyclocypris is erected to include single new species from subterranean waters of New South Wales, Australia. Kempfcyclocypris australis gen. et sp. nov. can be distinguished from other members of the subfamily by the following characters: 6-segmented antennula, absence of the sexual bristles on antenna, weakly asymmetrical prehensile palps, absence of the basal seta on the second thoracopod, and the long distal seta on the penultimate segment of the third thoracopod. Keysercypria is erected to include some South American species previously described in the genera Physocypria Vávra, 1897 or Cypria Zenker, 1854. The main characters of this genus are: rather globular carapace, with or without marginal tubercles; very short setae on endopodal segments of the third thoracopod; unequally long setae “h1” and “h2” on the terminal segment of the same appendage; and the presence of the basal seta on the second thoracopod. Keysercypria affinis (Klie, 1933) comb. nov. is chosen as the type species and, together with K. deformis (Klie, 1940) comb. nov., K. longiseta (Klie, 1930) comb. nov., K. obtusa (Klie, 1940) comb. nov., and K. pellucida (Sars, 1901), redescribed in the present paper and lectotype and paralectotype are designated. After examining and redescribing the type species of the genus Physocypria Vávra, 1897, P. bullata Vávra, 1897, the genus Mecynocypria Rome, 1962 is synonymised with Physocypria. Lectotype of P. bullata is here designated. For each valid genus a diagnosis, a key to species and a distribution map are provided. A list of six genera and 87 species, currently belonging to the subfamily Cyclocypridinae, is given at the end of the paper, along with their synonyms. Twenty four species are not included in the keys due to lack of data; these are also listed at the end of the paper.
