Abstract:
This study is dedicated to the Austrian physicist Edmund Weiss (1884–1932) and his time as assistant at the Institute of Physics of the German University in Prague in 1906–1914. Particular attention is paid to his 1911 habilitation work on the elementary quantum of electricity, which he measured in experiments with ultramicroscopic silver particles. In this work, Weiss repeated the measurements of Vienna physicist Felix Ehrenhaft. Unlike he, Weiss managed to confirm – with the help of Einstein’s 1905 formula for Brownian molecular motion – the value of elementary quantum of electricity, which had first been established by R. A. Millikan in his ‘oil drop’ experiments. Albert Einstein, at that time (in 1911–1912) professor of theoretical physics at the German University in Prague, praised Edmund Weiss and his work at the First Solvay Conference on Physics in Brussels in autumn 1911. Details of Weiss’s habilitation work at the Institute of Physics in Prague were described in letters written by Anton Lampa, professor and director of the institute, and addressed to the doyen of Viennese physics Viktor von Lang. Full texts of six of Lampa’s letters (in German) are appended to the study.

Abstract:
Nine taxa of Dalyelliidae Graff, 1908 collected from limnic habitats in Ontario, Canada and Michigan and Alabama, USA are discussed. Two taxa are new to science. Pseudodalyellia alabamensis n. gen. n. sp. has a unique combination of characters (Microdalyellia-type stylet with two proximal heteromorphic axes of different size and two distal axes with long spines flanking a central spiny plate, uterus without uterine sphincter, glandular protrusion in male atrium) and is therefore placed in a new genus. Gieysztoria choctaw n. sp. is strikingly similar to the Amazonian G. chiqchi Damborenea et al., 2005 but differs by having 13 symmetrically arranged, heteromorphic spines of different size on its fenestrated girdle. Gieysztoria pavimentata (Beklemischew, 1926) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939 and Gieysztoria rubra (Fuhrmann, 1894) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939 discovered in Alabama are the first records for these species in the Nearctic. Remarks on the morphology and distribution of the new North American records of Gieysztoria dodgei (Graff, 1911) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939, Microdalyellia fairchildi (Graff, 1911) Gieysztor, 1938, Microdalyellia rossi (Graff, 1911) Gieysztor, 1938, Castrella truncata (Abildgaard, 1789) Hofsten, 1907 and Castrella pinguis (Silliman, 1884) Fuhrmann, 1900 are given. For G. pavimentata, M. fairchildi and C. truncata, new localities from the Palearctic are also mentioned.

Abstract:
The Palaearctic xiphydriid genus Konowia Brauns, 1884, is redefined and the component species are revised on the basis of a close examination of stability and taxonomic use of previously used and newly introduced characters. A new genus, Monoxiphia, is proposed for Konowia harai Shinohara, 2019, from Japan (Monoxiphia harai (Shinohara, 2019), n. comb.) and Xiphydriola Semenov-Tian-Shanskij, 1921, is synonymized with Konowia. Konowia is represented by the following four species: K. betulae (Enslin, 1911) from Europe, through Siberia, Korea to Japan (Hokkaido, Kunashiri Is.), K. kojimai, n. sp., from Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu), K. megapolitana Brauns, 1884 from Europe to the Russian Far East, and K. yasumatsui (Togashi, 1972) from Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu). Xiphydriola amurensis Semenov-Tian-Shanskij, 1921, and Platyxiphydria nishijimai Togashi, 1998, are synonymized with K. betulae and a new species, K. kojimai, is described from Japan. Konowia yasumatsui is newly recorded from Honshu and Shikoku and the male of this species is described for the first time. A key to separate Monoxiphia, Konowia and four Konowia species is provided.

Abstract:
Archilejeunea (Spruce 1884: 88) Stephani (1888: 113) is a pantropical genus with about 28 species in two subgenera, subg. Archilejeunea with five species and the remaining ones in subg. Dibrachiella (Spruce 1884: 90) Schiffner (1893: 130) (Gradstein & Buskes 1985). The genus has been well-studied in the Neotropics and Australia (Gradstein & Buskes 1985; Thiers & Gradstein 1989; Gradstein 1994; Gradstein & Schäfer-Verwimp 2012) but the treatments of the African and Asiatic species are incomplete or outdated (e.g., Stephani 1911; Verdoorn 1934; Vanden Berghen 1951; Udar & Awasthi 1981a, 1982; Mizutani 1993; Gradstein et al. 2002). Several species have not been studied since their first publication. Moreover, recent molecular-phylogenetic studies indicate that Archilejeunea is not monophyletic (Wilson et al. 2007). Members of A. subg. Archilejeunea were resolved in a clade with Caudalejeunea (Stephani 1890: 18) Schiffner (1893: 129) and Schiffneriolejeunea Verdoorn (1933: 89), while those of A. subg. Dibrachiella resolved in a distant clade with species of Spruceanthus Verdoorn (1934: 151) and Ptychanthus Nees (1838: 211). As a result, the genus urgently needs revision.

Abstract:
A neotype is designated for Chemnitzia puncta C. B. Adams, 1850, now placed in the genus Turbonilla and considered to be a senior synonym of Turbonilla peilei Dall & Bartsch, 1911, Turbonilla haycocki Dall & Bartsch, 1911 and Turbonilla alfredi Abbott, 1958. Turbonilla obsoleta Dall, 1892, described as a variety of T. puncta, exhibits great deal of intraspecific variation in shell morphology and is considered as valid at the specific level. Turbonilla deboeri Jong & Coomans, 1988, Turbonilla westermanni Jong & Coomans, 1988 and Turbonilla punicea Dall, 1884 share a spiral sculpture pattern very similar to T. puncta, differing in the outline of the whorls, details of the ribs and/or width of the protoconch. Turbonilla puncta, T. deboeri, T. obsoleta and T. westermanni are reported for the first time from the Brazilian coast. Turbonilla tupinamba n. sp. is described from the southeast coast of Brazil and is distinguished from the conchologically related T. puncta and T. deboeri, by the shape of the ribs, outline of the whorls and growth pattern of the shell.

Abstract:
E.I. Molokhovets is the author of one of the most popular cookery books of the 2nd half of the 19th — early 20th century “Gift for young housewives”, which went through 29 editions. This book is still being reprinted with the same success among modern readers despite the fact that even during the life of the author, it was subjected to partly fair criticism for some “elitism” of the recipes presented. Not everyone knows nowadays her other, more modest, cooking book “A Simple, Public Cooking”, the first edition of which was published in 1884. This is book in the article. “A Simple, Public Cooking” is a collection of recipes that fully lives up to its title. The recipes for all the dishes presented in the collection are very simple both in terms of the composition of the necessary products and the methods of their preparation, which makes this book relevant for modern culinary lovers. The article provides a detailed comparative analysis of different editions of the collection published during the life of E.I. Molokhovets (in total, six editions were published from 1884 to 1911), and also examines its publishing fate in the Soviet and post-Soviet times.

Abstract:
The opening of the Blaauwkrantz Bridge in 1884 was an important link in the completion of the railway line-between Grahamstown and Port Alfred. This line proved a boon to farmers of the area and to businessmen in Grahamstown and Port Alfred. For the private company who built the line, however, it was not a financial success, and in 1913 it was taken over by the South African Railways and integrated into their railway system. Unable to cope with the increased traffic and the heavier rolling stock, the original Blaauwkrantz Bridge was eventually replaced by a new one. The old bridge, however, is still remembered for a railway disaster in April 1911 in which twenty eight people were killed.

Abstract:
The whip scorpions (Arachnida: Uropygi) from the Pennsylvanian Coal Measures of Mazon Creek, Illinois, USA are restudied. Four Mazon Creek uropygid specimens have previously been described and a fifth is added here. Contrary to earlier reports, none of the specimens lack eyes and the sternum is similarly shaped in all the specimens. Consequently, the two younger names, Geralinura similis Petrunkevitch, 1913 and G. gigantea Petrunkevitch, 1913 are here treated as junior synonyms of G. carbonaria Scudder, 1884. The morphology of the pedipalps is more like those of some modern amblypygids, being spiniferous and non-chelate, suggesting the subchelate palps found in all Recent whip scorpions is an apomorphy not yet incorporated into the bodyplan of G. carbonaria. Indeed, subchelate palps also seem to be absent in other species of this age. For completeness, we summarise here the six Pennsylvanian whip scorpions currently recognised—including sketch reconstructions—with comments on further differences between the Paleozoic and living taxa. Geralinura Scudder, 1884 is reserved for G. carbonaria and the British species G. britannica Pocock, 1911. Prothelyphonus Friĉ, 1904 is reinstated for the Czech species P. bohemicus (Kuŝta, 1884). Parageralinura gen. nov. is proposed for the widely overlooked Dutch species P. neerlandica (Laurentiaux-Vieria and Laurentiaux, 1961) and the German species P. naufraga (Brauckmann and Koch, 1983). All the Coal Measures whip scorpion genera are treated here as plesion taxa, basal to the Thelyphonidae, which can be defined as whip scorpions with a fully subchelate pedipalp, the chelae formed from large and distinct patellar and tibial apophyses.

Summary This article analyses previously unpublished notes by Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913) contained in a single large register which he used in the first half of the 1880s. The earliest pages include his detailed reactions to La parole intérieure (1881) by Victor Egger (1848–1909). Although these reactions are sometimes hostile, the later notes, dated December 1884 and March 1885, appear to build on ideas he encountered in Egger. These notes — probably connected to his course on Gothic and Old High German grammar at the École des Hautes Études in Paris — show to what extent the account of language associated with his lectures on general linguistics of 1907–1911 was already present in his teaching a quarter of a century earlier.

Abstract:
In the Military Museum in Belgrade there are two prototypes of military flags. Those flags, according to the regulation of 1904, were never appointed to the Serbian Army. Based on the details on one of the flags, it was determined that the canvas belonged to a flag from the earlier regulation, dating from 1884. It is the canvas of the flag of the 7 th Infantry Regiment called "King Alexander I", which was previously considered destroyed in 1903. Bearing in mind that there are no preserved flags from the period of this regulation, it was concluded that the Military Museum safeguards the only testimony of this flag model, remade in 1904. Flags, made according to the regulation of 1884, were appointed to the Army in 1886, on the Obrenović's holiday "Cveti". The names of the Obrenović Dynasty were inscribed on the canvas, and some of the regiments were named after them. Although they did not take part in the war with Bulgaria in 1885, these flags were presented as war flags in artworks. When the Karadjordjević Dynasty came to power, military flags with names of the Obrenović Dynasty were probably withdrawn or remade, and other flags got new ribbons, with the monogram of the new king. Other elements of the flags were not disputable for the Karadjordjević Dynasty. The regulation on flags was adopted in 1904, but the changes were not drastic, thus it happened that for the creation of a flag prototype, the canvas of the flag from earlier regulation was used. Flags were replaced shortly before the Balkan wars, in 1911. Before that, they had been used for almost seven years under the Obrenović Dynasty, plus eight years under the Karadjordjević Dynasty. Firstly, they were celebrated as the symbols of the Serbian Royal Army, and since 1904 they were a temporary solution until the definition of flag symbols that would have wider mobilization potential. Not crowned with war glory and being witnesses of politically unstable period, their lives after 1911 were not considered a significant testimony of the military history

Abstract The article analyzes the ‘distant topography’ in the lyrical work of German poet Oskar Loerke (1884–1941) by referring to Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of deterritorialization. It takes as its starting point a reading of “China” in Loerke’s poems, which appears as an ultimate distance but at the same time as mediated by Chinoiserie and Orientalism. However, for Loerke, China not only implies a topos of longing, but also indicates a potential transformation, especially for the lyrical subject, as it will be shown in a close reading of “Das chinesische Puppentheater” (1911). In his later work Der Silberdistelwald (Silver Thistle Forest, 1934), Loerke refers to the unreadable Chinese characters, which, in this context, can be read as to leave distant China at a distance and to deterritorialize it poetically.

Ludomir Sawicki’s (1884–1928) Contribution to the Organization of Polish Science in the Field of Geography The article aims to present the activities of Ludomir Sawicki (1884–1928), professor of Geography at the Jagiellonian University, with particular emphasis on his contribution to the organization of Polish science in this field. Ludomir Sawicki was born and raised in Vienna, but after graduating and defending his doctorate, he came to Krakow and started working as a junior high school teacher. Later – after obtaining his habilitation – he was a lecturer and professor at the Jagiellonian University, where he started organizing the Institute of Geography. He corresponded with Eugeniusz Romer regarding the publication of the Geographical and Statistical Atlas of Poland (Geograficzno-statystyczny atlas Polski). Abstract:

In his lauding review of Dimitrije Matic?s (1821-1884) History of Philosophy (largely based on ?. Schwegler), published in 1865 in the journal Vila, started and edited by Stojan Novakovic (1842-1915), Alimpije Vasiljevic (1831-1911) assessed the pattern of the book as one of the latest and best in the field. In his critical reaction to Vasiljevic?s review, Milan Kujundzic (1842-1893) challenged his assessment. For the generation of the United Serbian Youth, Hegelianism was unacceptable for two reasons: because of increasingly influential positivism (naturalism) and scientism, and because of the strengthening of the ideology of Greater Germany with which it was equated. Both Vasiljevic and Kujundzic were liberals. Their debate, however, was harsh and long, and the intellectual public followed it with ?particular attention?. They polemicized about, inter alia, the actual philosophical relevance of the issue of idealism vs. materialism. Even though the debate showed inconsistencies and contradictions in argumentation, it led to independence in problem formulation and solving.

Abstract:
Travel to Mexico became instantly faster, smoother, and cheaper for Americans when workers finally linked US and Mexican rail lines in 1884. Following the opening of the international rail connection, Americans went south of the border in droves and produced a wide array of representations depicting Mexico under the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz (1876–1911, a period known as the “Porfiriato”). Travelogues, picture postcards, stereographs, and magic-lantern slides with Mexican themes all circulated heavily in US popular culture during this time. This essay examines the politics of difference in these representations – chiefly travel writing and postcards – arguing that travelers and other observers played a crucial but overlooked role in popularizing the view of Mexico as a logical field for capitalist (and sometimes territorial) expansionism. By positioning Mexican bodies as both desirable and dangerous, I argue, the creators of travel discourse set the stage for contradictory and ambivalent views of Mexico that reverberate in the United States even today.

Abstract:
Abstract. The study of glaciers in the Caucasus began in the first quarter of the 18th century. The first data on glaciers can be found in the works of great Georgian scientist Vakhushti Bagrationi. After almost hundred years the foreign scientists began to describe the glaciers of Georgia. Information about the glaciers of Georgia can be found in the works of W. Abich (1865), D. Freshfield (1869), G. Radde (1873), N. Dinik (1884), I. Rashevskiy (1904), A. Reinhardt (1916, 1917) etc. The first statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia are found in the catalog of the Caucasus glaciers compiled by K. Podozerskiy in 1911 (Podozerkiy, 1911). Then, in 1960s the large-scale (1:25 000, 1:50 000) topographic maps were published, which were compiled in 1955–1960 on the basis of the space images. On the basis of the mentioned maps R. Gobejishvili gave quite detailed statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia (Gobejishvili, 1989). Then in 1975 the glaciological catalog of the former USSR was published (The Catalog of Glaciers of the USSR, Vol. 8–9, 1975), where the statistical information about the glaciers of Georgia was obtained on the basis of the space images of 1970–1975. Thus, complete statistical information on the glaciers of Georgia has not been published for about last 40 years. Data obtained by us by processing of the space images of Landsat and ASTER is the latest material, which is the best tool for identification of the change in the number and area of the glaciers of Georgia during the last one century. The article presents the percentage and quantitative changes in the number and area of the glaciers of Georgia in the years of 1911–1960–1975–2014, according to the individual river basins. The air temperature course of the Georgia's high mountain weather stations has been studied. The river basins have been revealed, where there are the highest indices of the reduction in area and number of the glaciers and the reasons have been explained.

Abstract:
Objective of research: to perform the analysis of long-term (15 annum) dynamics of Bithyniidae snails infected by trematode parthenites from the Chany Lake, the biggest lake in the south of Western Siberia. Materials and methods: The Bithyniidae snails examined in the lake-river systems Chany Lake in 1994-2013 (in the middle reaches and in the estuary of the Kargat River) and in the Zolotye Rossypi Bay and the Malye Chany Lake. The Bithyniidae snails were collected from May to September (twice in any ten days) by hand from 4–6 plots of 0.25 m2 at a depth of 0.1–0.7 m. In total, 8,316 Bithynia troscheli (Paasch, 1842) and 766 В. tentaculata (L., 1758) were examined. Identification of parthenitae trematode was based on observation when mature cercariae were capable of leaving the shell of the host snail on their own. Results and discussion: In Bithyniidae snails, we found parthenites from trematodes from 12 families Cyathocotylidae Mühling, 1898 Poche, 1925; Prosthоgonimidae Luhe, 1909; Pleurogenetidae Looss, 1898; Lecithodendriidae Odhner, 1911; Microphallidae (Ward, 1901) Travassos, 1920; Plagiorchiidae Lühe, 1901 Echinostomatidae (Looss 1899) Dietz, 1909 Odhner 1910); Psilostomidae (Looss 1900) Odhner 1913; Notocotylidae Luhe, 1909; Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911; Cyclocoelidae Kossack, 1911 и Opisthorchidae (Lass, 1899) Braun, 1901. The prevalence of bithyniid snails infected by trematode parthenites varied from 1,6% to 24,1% in different years The double infection by trematode parthenites was found in 0,96% bithyniid snails from estuary of the Kargat River; 4,45% in the Malye Chany Lake, and 26,6%, in the Zolotye Rossypi Bay. The cercariae of Opisthorchidae family in four annum of the fifteen detected. The prevalence of bithyniid snails infected by trematode parthenites from Opisthorchis felineus (Rivolta, 1884) and Metorchis bilis (Braun, 1890) was observed in Chany Lake systems for the first time. Both species (O. felineus and M. bilis) of trematodes have danger to human health and causes very dangerous disease, opisthorchiasis and metorchiasis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article discusses some fragmentary known aspects of the history of mining partnerships – the first domestic institution created in addition to state pension guarantees for retired "free rural residents" of state-owned mining plants in the Caucasus, the Urals, Karelia and Eastern Siberia. When writing the article, materials from two Russian archives and, mainly, pre-revolutionary author's publications in the Mining Journal, the official publication of the Mining Scientific Committee, were used. The problematic characteristics of loan transactions are analyzed by the content of the identified facts of "neglect" and "damages" investigated during inspections of the activities of the Kusinsky, Zlatoust and Satka partnerships in 1881, 1877–1884 and 1911–1913, respectively. The indicators of financial and material "sustainability" of the system of partnerships as new formations of the post-reform era are given. For citation: Orlov P.A. Abstract:
The Biologia Centrali Americana (B.C.A.) is comprised of eight volumes that deal specifically with Coleoptera. These volumes were split into 18 parts and were published between 1879 and 1911. The family Lampyridae was treated in two parts, the main text (1881) with a supplement (1884). Within volume three, part 2, Gorham lists ~90 species in 14 genera, not including the Phengodini subfamily. Of these, Gorham provided original descriptions for 37 species. During recent research visits (2018 and 2020) the authors were able to study material pertinent to the B.C.A. We were able to confidently designate holotypes, lectotypes, and paralectotypes following ICZN articles 73.1 and 74.1 within these species. Two species described by Gorham (1881) are not treated here. Phaenolis nirgricollis was located with a single specimen, already designate as the holotype. Two female syntypes of Photinus consanguineous were located, however Oliver (1907) synonymized these females with Photinus pyralis. These designations contribute to a larger taxonomic effort to stabilize the nomenclature of this group. The species described in the supplement will be treated in a future work. Subfamilies are listed according to Martin et al. (2019) and genera/species within each subfamily are listed according to the order in Gorham (1881).

Abstract:
Even in learned journals on African and imperial history, few references have been made to the records contained in the archives in Cameroon, West Africa. Kamerun was a German colony (Schutzgebiet) from 1884-1916/19. In 1911, the Germans took over New Cameroon (Neu Kamerun), 295,000 km2 of land of French Equatorial Africa, ceded during the second Morocco Crisis. After World War I this transaction was reversed and the German colony was separated into French and British League of Nations Mandates in 1919. These mandates were transformed into United Nations Trusteeships in 1946. Finally, French Cameroun became independent in 1960, and after a plebiscite in 1961, one part of the British Cameroons joined Nigeria and the other part reunited with the formerly French part, now the independent Federal Republic of Cameroon.Due to the involvement of three colonial powers in Cameroon, the national archives in Yaoundé and Buea are an excellent source for the colonial history of West Africa, allowing for a simultaneous analysis of German, French, and British files. Whereas the colonial files in the European archives mainly give us the point of view of high politics, the archives in Cameroon offer a different dimension. The files reveal the intricacies of the colonial system on the ground, and the problems with which the colonial administrator had to cope in the bush: How did one introduce European legal tender in a territory never touched by Europeans before? How did one cope with the colonial rivals, who were couching at the frontiers to take over the territory? How did one attempt to win peoples' hearts and minds day in and day out? What happened when the new colonial power took over a territory with an already developed administration from another colonial power, as it took place in Cameroon in 1911 and 1916/19? The national archives of Cameroon contain potential answers to these questions. Hence this paper will focus on the sources that are available for the colonial period in these archives.

Abstract:
The Miocene Costellariidae of the Paratethys Sea are revised. In total, 39 species in seven genera are recorded herein, documenting an unexpected diversity of these marine gastropods. The α-diversities of up to 14 species and basin-scale γ-diversities of up to 28 coeval species reveal the Central Paratethys as a unique diversity hot-spot for Miocene Costellariidae. Palaeobiogeographic relationships with the adjacent Proto-Mediterranean Sea are low at species level, and absent for Eastern Paratethyan and north-eastern Atlantic faunas. Antithala nov. gen. and Fedosovia nov. gen. are described as new genera. Bellardithala nov. nom. is introduced as new name for Micromitra Bellardi (1888) [non Meek, 1873]. Eight species are described as new: Antithala claviformis nov. sp., Antithala filipescui nov. sp., Bellardithala kovaci nov. sp., Bellardithala baluki nov. sp., Bellardithala fedosovi nov. sp., Bellardithala dacica nov. sp., Pusia confunda nov. sp., and Vexillum transalpinum nov. sp. Abstract:
Much early discussion on the glaciations now dated as late Neoproterozoic (Cryogenian) emanated from the small geological community working in South Australia in the early twentieth century, when their age was regarded as Lower Cambrian. An initial glacial interpretation of long known ‘conglomerates’ by H. P. Woodward was made as early as 1884. Papers by Adelaide-based W. Howchin, were published in British, US and German Journals in 1908, 1911 and 1912 respectively, advocating floating sea ice as a major depositional mechanism. Sydney-based T. W. E. David was also significantly involved via the longstanding Glacial Research Committee of the Australasian Association for Advancement of Science. David publicised recognition of the glaciation at the International Geological Congress in Mexico (1906) where he also suggested that the entire earth might have been glaciated, hence foreshadowing the modern ‘snowball earth’ hypothesis. Objections to the hypothesis of a ‘Lower Cambrian’ glaciation were also raised at an early stage by Howchin's Adelaide-based colleagues. Howchin and his adversaries defended their opposing views in voluminous and fiery articles in the South Australian press in the period 1905-1912 during which both sides endeavoured to undermine their opponent's credibility. By 1907, David had also appreciated the importance of carbonate beds that succeed glacial deposition. R. Lockhart Jack recognised two major glacial episodes within the modern late Neoproterozoic as early as 1913.

Abstract:
In the intellectual space and public life of Drohobych private publishers created the city's book culture in their printing houses. The first printer in Drohobych is considered to be Aron Hersch Zhupnik, who founded the newspaper “Drohobyczer Zeitung” in 1883. Later, the Drohobych publisher continued to print products for Jews and Poles. However, he also contributed to Ukrainian-language publications. In 1887, A. Zhupnyk's printing house published the first Ukrainian-language brochure in Drohobych. Before the First World War, Zhupnyk printed a Ukrainian postcard in Drohobych. In 1911–1912 he published the first Ukrainian newspaper “Voice of Subcarpathia” (editor and publisher – Rudolf Skybinsky). During the period of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (1918–1919), the Ukrainian newspaper Drohobych Leaf (edited by Ivan Kalynovych) was published in the Zhupnyk printing house. However, the founder of the printing house was no longer alive. A. Zhupnyk's printing house also published calendars, advertising posters, payment books, orders, instructions (announcements) of the WUPR County Board, various forms: birth/death certificates, IDs, invitations to dance evenings and marriage ceremonies. accounts, and contracts of sale. Chronological boundaries of these publications are 1884 – early 1930s. A. Zhupnyk's printing house operated in Drohobych chronologically for the longest time. The merits of Aron Župnik who, unlike Polish publishers, boldly and successfully published Ukrainian publications, should be considered significant.

Abstract:
In his survey of Irish media over the last two centuries, Christopher Morash explains that, during the Revival years, Irish literature, politics, and public life existed ‘in a frenzy of print’, with hundreds of different nationalist newspapers and periodicals produced during these years – a print culture that ‘was not simply the vehicle for the literary revival; it was a constituent part of it’. R. F. Foster has emphasized that ‘little newspapers and magazines of the nationalist fringe’, more than High Culture, ‘galvanized the imaginations and opinions of young radicals” who would go on to shape Ireland's literary and political future. This essay explores Irish literature and periodical culture of the nationalist fringe through a close examination of Bean na hÉireann (‘Woman of Ireland’, 1908-1911), Ireland's first nationalist periodical expressly written for and by women. Tracking the radical networks cultivated by this one-penny monthly, it focuses on editor Helena Molony (1884-1967), who provided a forum for marginalized thinkers, such as women, trade unionists, and militants nationalists, to ‘have a voice and influence in the matters… of their country’. In noting the tensions present in Molony's radical networks, this essay illuminates the local and national networks of Irish journalism, whether in terms of business practices, models for political separatism, pragmatic organizing principles, or abstract philosophy concerning the imagined communities that were a primary readership for this journal.

Abstract:
Shor texts are an essential resource of the preservation and further development of the language of Shor, one of the indigenous peoples of Southern Siberia. Nowadays, the Shor are developing their literature. Contemporary Shor authors are using their native language creating works in various genres. The examples of the Shor written language of a wide time frame have become accessible. In the process of revitalization of the Shor language the fixation of its vocabulary is of prior importance as vocabulary accumulates ethnic notional sphere in the lexical meaning of words. Shor lexemes can be singled out from Turkic- Russian dictionaries by V. I. Verbitsky (1884), W. Radlov (1893–1911). A dictionary for students of Shor is written by N. N. Kurpeshko-Tannagasheva and F. Y. Apon`kin (1993). Nevertheless, a significant amount of material from Shor texts has not yet been reflected in lexicographic studies. The “field” organization of the vocabulary and expanded presentation of the lexemes in their actual contexts meet the needs of practical usage of Shor – in its oral and written forms and as a material for further linguistic research. This article deals with the lexemes denoting “Singing”, the notion forming one of semantic centers in the field “Music”. The main aim of the article is to show the usage of the lexemes in various contexts. These contexts are taken from original Shor texts of different genres: folk and authors` texts ((lyrics and prose).

Abstract:
The beginning of the American Poetic Renaissance is considered to be 1912: the Imagists, Poetry magazine, the new generation of poets — Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Edna St. Vincent Millay, etc. This phenomenon keeps attracting a lot of attention of literary critics, meanwhile the previous two decades of American poetry fell out of sight of both readers and scholars. However it would be wrong to assume that there were no noteworthy poets and poems in America after Whitman’s death and before the debuts of Pound and Eliot. How did the American poets themselves evaluate “the current moment”? George Viereck’s lecture “America as a Land of Poets” delivered in 1911 at the University of Berlin can give an idea. George Sylvester Viereck (1884–1962), an outstanding poet, critic and editor, speaking of the “undiscovered, esoteric America, where religion and poetry dwell,” divided American poets into four groups. In the first one there are Whitman's heirs, nativists and democrats, singers of labor and comradeship, like Horace Traubel and Edwin Markham. Next, there are heirs of Poe, aristocrats and esthetes, masters of style, like George Santayana and William Vaughn Moody. The third group unites heirs of Longfellow, traditional and conservative authors, like Henry Van Dyke and Richard Watson Gilder. Finally, there are “lyrical rebels,” combining the legacy of Poe and Whitman and that of Swinburne and Baudelaire. Vireck included himself and the majority of young poets from the anthology The Younger Choir (1910) to the fourth group. This paper includes the full Russian translation of the lecture in Viereck’s English presentation.

Abstract:
The Black Pill Millipede,Glomeris marginata, is the best studied millipede species and a model organism for Diplopoda.Glomeris marginatais widespread, with numerous colour morphs occurring across its range, especially in the south. This study investigates whether colour morphs might represent cryptic species as well as the haplotype diversity and biogeography ofG. marginata. The results of the COI barcoding fragment analysis include 97G. marginata, as well as 21 specimens from seven potentially related species:G. intermediaLatzel, 1884,G. klugiiBrandt, 1833 (G. undulataC.L. Koch, 1844),G. connexaKoch, 1847,G. hexastichaBrandt, 1833,G. maerensAttems, 1927,G. annulataBrandt, 1833 andG. apuanaVerhoeff, 1911. The majority of the barcoding data was obtained through the German Barcode of Life project (GBOL). Interspecifically,G. marginatais separated from its congeners by a minimum uncorrected genetic distance of 12.9 %, confirming its monophyly. Uncorrected intraspecific distances ofG. marginataare comparable to those of other widespreadGlomerisspecies, varying between 0–4.7%, with the largest genetic distances (>2.5 %) found at the Mediterranean coast. 97 sampled specimens ofG. marginatayielded 47 different haplotypes, with identical haplotypes occurring at large distances from one another, and different haplotypes being present in populations occurring in close proximity. The highest number of haplotypes was found in the best-sampled area, western Germany. The English haplotype is identical to northern Spain; specimens from southern Spain are closer to French Mediterranean specimens. Analyses (CHAO1) show that approximately 400 different haplotypes can be expected inG. marginata. To cover all haplotypes, it is projected that up to 6,000 specimens would need to be sequenced, highlighting the impossibility of covering the whole genetic diversity in barcoding attempts of immobile soil arthropod species.

Abstract:
After Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff had passed away on 1 March 1911, his pupil Charles Marinus van Deventer (1860–1931) wrote a very personal ‘in memoriam’ in the Dutch literary periodical De Gids, pointing out that van't Hoff had merely been interested in scientific facts, not in the people discovering these facts. Van't Hoff considered the study of the history of chemistry, although by no means uncongenial, a matter of little importance. He once even said: ‘To me historical research appears to be appropriate for a chemist in the decline of life, when he no longer creates professional ideas, and when the laboratory has become a burden to him’. Although van Deventer had studied physical chemistry at van't Hoff's Amsterdam laboratory and had been his assistant from 1885 until 1893, he disagreed with this verdict. Van Deventer was not only a capable physical chemist, he was also an active member of the Tachtigers, a circle of Dutch poets who around 1880 brought about a renewal in Dutch literature. He took a special interest in Greek philosophy. He did not graduate with van't Hoff, but with his colleague Jan Willem Gunning (1827–1900). His thesis was not based on physical-chemical, but on historical research: Schetsen uit de Geschiedenis van de Scheikunde (‘Sketches from the history of chemistry’; 13 December 1884). From 1922 to 1923 he lectured on the history of chemistry at Utrecht University. His fascinating lectures were published as Grepen uit de Historie der Chemie (‘Choices from the history of chemistry’; 1924). This work reveals his particular interest in the development of chemical concepts.
