Abstract:
In early twentieth-century Belgium, a number of women started careers in teaching and furthered their education at university. This article explores how one of them, Joséphine Schouteden-Wéry – a teacher, a botanist and wife of a successful zoologist – built her public image as a professional “teacher-scientist” by tapping into various pre-existing cultural repertoires for the female popular science writer and for the scientist. I examine how several elements were instrumental in this process, for both the making and the circulation of her public self. Attention is thus directed towards the opportunities provided by the ambiguity of the field as a place of biological research and teaching, the fluidity and uses of the persona of the explorer by scientists and non-scientists alike, and the different impacts of scientific sociability. It is argued that while Schouteden-Wéry strove to construct an independent and consistent public self as a scientist, a teacher and a wife, the different sides of her multifaceted public self occasionally clashed with each other.

Abstract:
Our purpose is simple: to apply a rudimentary kind of logical analysis to the problem, which sometimes arises in linguistic typology and in comparative linguistics, of whether there are any languages with fewer than two vowels. The principal reason why this question has occupied the attention of linguists is probably the fact that Proto-Indo-European is sometimes said to have had only one vowel phoneme (see especially Hjelmslev (1936–7), Borgstrøm (1949, 1954) and Lehmann (1952), following Saussure (1879). Yet this was precisely one of the features of PIE reconstruction that Jakobson selected for attack on typological grounds, reasoning that ‘a conflict between the reconstructed state of a language and the general laws which typology discovers makes the reconstruction questionable’ (1958: 23).

Abstract:
This thesis aims at placing Alexandre Marius Jacob in the course of social and political history. The man owes his reputation to his fallacious comparison with Arsène Lupin which was developed by his first three biographers (Alain Sergent, Bernard Thomas and William Caruchet). But Jacob is more than just an adventurer. Everything he did bear the stamps of anarchy. He is the theorist of an original activist practice, robbery, as his trial in Amiens in 1905 proves it. The history of Alexandre Jacob has many different aspects. It is certainly more than just an evocation of the social robbery which develops in the late XIXth century. It allows us to discover a peculiar form of prison life : penal colony. But above all, it also enables us to have a glimpse of the anarchist movement through the eyes of the individual, from 1894 to 1954

Abstract:
The writings of Alexandre Marius Jacob (1879-1954) have been compiled in 1995 by L’Insomniaque : its critical journey and entire publications revealed the interest aroused by this anarchist burglar. Historical documents, political testimonies and biographical materials, Alexandre Jacob’s narratives and letters are also texts that led themselves to a literary look, even if they were not literature strictly speaking. Extremely pragmatical, i. E. Rooted in their production context and subordinated to their redaction’s issues, they are nonetheless the multiple expressions of a man, great reader, alternately essayist and autobiographer, narrator and epistolier, orator and writer. Author – maybe despite himself – of a plural autobiography composed by the Écrits volume, Alexandre Jacob had a unique history : fervent anarchist and ingenious thief, propelled on the judicial arena, condemned to hard labor and sent for life to French Guiana, he finally got released, twenty years after, thanks to the perseverance of his mother Marie. In this trajectory, deportation constituted a crucial event : at that time as much as afterwards, it involved grabbing the pen to communicate with the absentee mother first, then to denounce “the French elimination” in Guiana. Far from being a simple decor, the circumstances truly shaped the process of a speech it ordered, even more in this extreme situation of hard labor. The correspondence between Alexandre and Marie Jacob got exposed to many difficulties, which compromised the writing, travelling and reading of the few two hundreds exchanged letters. It seems that this correspondence is the centrepiece of a composite corpus, in which there is not a writing more strongly impeded by the conditions of its emergence, neither more revealing of Jacob’s skill to defeat the constraint, to face it and to take advantage of it. The long text of this epistolary time highlights the insubordination of a thought, the paradoxical creativity of a trapped writing, the irreducible expressivity of an “I” who manage to say itself after all, head off the beaten path

Abstract:
Current scholarship on Miles Franklin emphasises the gaps and contradictions of a secretive and mysterious author. The eagerly awaited release of her private papers was marked by Paul Brunton's 2004 publication of her diaries, an edition that has been conceived and understood as a revelation of "the real Miles Franklin" (Lecture Title, State Library). This thesis disrupts the concept of a "real" Franklin by arguing that these diaries, in their manuscript form, give us more delay. Foregrounding the performative guises of the private diary subject, this thesis establishes that we are, and will always be, waiting for the real Miles Franklin to arrive. The insights of diary and textual theories illuminate Franklin, I will argue, as one who seeks the proliferative creativity of the anonymous author, and who would use her diary writing to escape definition within public discourse. Yet the tension between creativity and the daily enables us to see how potential is distorted into waiting in the surrogate space of these diaries, as Franklin seeks protection within the nostalgia of a national past and an Edenic vision of the future. This vantage point directs us to identify, as will be seen, the vulnerabilities and instabilities of this space for Franklin, as it implicates her in the dilemma of her times. In this way, we can ascertain how she holds the line as a "spotless virgin" (3 May 1942) in her resistance to the gender performances of new women, her refusal to be defined as one thing or another. This resistance to imitation will also be analysed as it plays out via the curse of Franklin's self-repetition in an Australia that waits, disrupting her attempts to achieve anonymity as the embodiment of a national literary tradition. In her avoidance of being a private text to be read, Franklin promotes herself, I will contend, as a "world classic" (Franklin Furphy 3) author of and in these diaries, resisting the transition from the readerly to the modernist writerly text at a time of artistic revolution (Barthes S/Z 4). In illuminating Franklin's exposure to these very vulnerabilities as a subject-in-process, in a document intended for posthumous publication, this thesis will establish that she has made a courageous contribution to the complexities of a particular moment within Australian modernity

Hedley, Jocelyn School of English Media &amp Performing Arts UNSW. "The unpublished plays of Miles Franklin." 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/40895.

Full text
Abstract:
With the publication of her novel, My Brilliant Career, in 1901, Miles Franklin became the darling of the Sydney literati. Great things were expected of the little girl from the bush. But five years later, nothing had eventuated; her talent, Miles thought, was barely recognised in Australia. In the hope of gaining greater writing opportunities, she shipped to Chicago where she became involved in social reform. It was hard work and ill paid, and though she bewailed the fact that it sapped her writing energy, she nonetheless felt a commitment to the cause such that she remained for almost a decade. In her spare time, though, she continued to write -- and not just prose. More and more she wrote for the theatre, attempting to push into a world of which she had always dreamed. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, she had long desired to be on the stage. This was impossible, though; her voice, she believed, had been ruined by bad training in her youth. To write for the stage, then, though a poor substitute, was at least in the field of her original ideal. Miles' plays, though, are not remembered today, and are little thought of in scholarship, are considered, in fact, to have failed. This gives the false impression that they were always little thought of. Her correspondence, however, reveals that at least five of the plays were produced, indicating a certain level of success. Miles Franklin's theatrical work, then, is surely worthy of further examination. This thesis looks at five of the plays in the light of Miles' life and in the light of the society in which she found herself. In turn, it uses the plays to reveal something of the nature of the playwright herself and to show that Miles Franklin's theatrical writing did not fail as once thought. In addition, it provides a complete bibliography of the plays (inclusive of locations), lists the duplications as they appear under alternate titles and provides synopses of a large number. This will make up for a gap in Miles Franklin scholarship and will facilitate other scholars in accessing the plays. This thesis, then, is an introduction to a new facet of Miles Franklin scholarship.

Abstract:
This thesis examines textual comparisons between Miles Franklin (1879-1954) and Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-96). This is an interdisciplinary project that applies the methodologies of comparative literature, feminist literary studies, and comparative studies between Australia and Japan. My methodology depends particularly upon feminist approaches to modern women's literature and an international tradition of women's writing. Thus, feminisms such as poststructuralist and postcolonialism are not applied here because they stress a notion of difference, broadly defined, between women through arguments based in identity politics. Likewise, differentiating Franklin and Ichiyo's, Australia and Japan, as the Occident and the Orient is not to my purpose. Translation is a major medium or resource in comparative literary studies. My Brilliant Career is available translated into Japanese while some of Ichiyo's texts are translated by Robert Lyons Danly. However, I study the original texts and quote both in English and Japanese, avoiding some of the restrictions and cultural reshaping of translation. In the Introduction, I look into Australia's bush myth and Japan's "ie" system as Franklin's and Ichiyo's cultural backgrounds. These paradigms, which also operate as ideologies, are powerfully similar in their significance as invented cultural and national traditions. In my reading of Franklin's and Ichiyo's respective texts, as both individual texts and intertexts in each chapter, I focus on commonalities in their concerns about femininity, sexual politics and gender issues in relation to their cultural and political contexts. The primary focus in my thesis is their shared use of metaphor. I discuss bird/s, in Chapter two, as a metaphor for women. In My Brilliant Career (1901), My Career Goes Bung (1946) and Childhood at Brindabella (1963), Franklin's bird imagery signifies various situations and experiences of the women characters. Ichiyo's bird imagery in the diaries (1912) and Wakarejimo (1892), together with its cultural and social signification, implies women's suppressed sexuality. Chapter three investigates images of gardens. In My Brilliant Career and Childhood at Brindabella, representations of gardens are the symbolisation of femininity and female power. Images of gardens in Ichiyo's diaries, Yamiyo (1894), Utsusemi (1895) and Warekara (1896) symbolise not only the women characters' powerlessness but also their resistance and self-understanding. My investigation of metaphor reveals Franklin's and Ichiyo's rejection of patriarchal ideologies and confirms their shared project of speaking for women through their writings. Thus, these writers participate in an on-going and international tradition of feminist literature. The particular contribution of this thesis is to make Franklin's and Ichiyo's shared project visible through comparative literary studies.

Carvalho, Ana Leonor Borges de. "Um circulo na terra : desenhos do circo." Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/50079.

Full text
Abstract:
A Circle on Earth - Circus Drawings is based on a series of 30 drawings that explore the strength of the line, its interactions in the bare space of the sheet, inspired by the movement of aerial acrobats, in a tribute to their ballets in the air, which rouse a combination of emotions from the beholder. This work aims to establish the parallels between Drawing and aerial acrobatics, the reflection of their gestures in space, as well as the creation of lines and compositions, through scratching on physical supports, where the ephemeral movements and spatial configurations of acrobats were graphically recorded, at different intensities and rhythms, in a challenge of making them visible. The approach is consolidated in an investigation of the circus arts, its origins and contextualization, namely aerial acrobatics, in a brief historical survey, from its beginnings to the contemporary New Circus, which reinvents its traditional characteristics through experimentalism, conceiving new aesthetic proposals and concepts. Artworks from some of the most prominent artists of the XIX and XX centuries that explore the circus as a theme are analyzed, their graphic nuances revealed, proposing discussions over the possible conceptions and readings of what circus stands for.

Abstract:
The central subject of this work is how the drawing can be fundamental and crucial as a tool for product and service development in design. The work starts with a historical analysis of the drawing theory to achieve a clear view of how sketch and drawing can stimulate creativity. This work passes through three stages. First, a historical review where is investigated the drawing as a project aid; the unique value of him; and also the differences and resemblances between sketch and drawing. Secondly, the contemporary utility given to him in the design world, where the concept of design is defined; the way drawing entered in the fine arts landscape; and the primordial functions of the drawing in the creative process used by the designer to create. Third, the elaboration of a graphic exploitation of three objects, that puts in practice some of the investigated theoretical questions, such as the use of the sketch in the first phase of a project – Discovery – when the record is as ambiguous as the own concept; and the achievement of the total definition of a project only using drawing. Based on the theoretical investigation and in the practical exploration is possible to claim that the sketch helps to define the problematic of the issues proposed to the designer and that the drawing defines the solution. In other words, the drawing provides the discovery of new forms and meanings that can result in an innovative object. The practical project revealed the possibility of drawing and sketching the same three objects with countless approaches with only one starting point. The movement and gesture were the fundamental elements to make that happen. It can confirm that the drawing benefits from a personal language, expressed by point and line. The necessary information used to the elaboration of this investigation can be found in the bibliographical list at the end of the work. All the information was analyzed and filtered to guaranteed the veracity of the work.

Abstract:
The publishing of calendars in Latvian language began already in the middle of the 19th century. However, with some exceptions, this phenomenon has not gained sufficient attention of the specialists in the field. The same can be said concerning the calendars in Latvian published after the WWII by Latvian communities in exile. Due to objective reasons, the range of the calendars published in exile is not as wide and varied as in Latvia before occupation. Nowadays, the only value many of them still retain is that of a testimony of their specific time and cultural situation. Nevertheless, one can find calendars intended not just for some recreational reading and those have an enduring place in the history of calendars published in Latvian. Some of them bear the characteristics of one-man enterprise: e.g., Bitītes kalendārs (The Bee’s Calendar) (Eslingen, Germany, 1946–1958) composed by the Archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Teodors Grīnbergs (1870–1962) or Ārstniecības kalendārs (Calendar for Treatment) (Chicago, USA, 1954–1964) composed by Dāvids Bīskaps (1879–1972). In case of some others, we find a more extensive group of authors and the touch of an experienced editor, e.g., P. Mantinieka apgāda gada grāmata (The Annual of P. Mantinieks’ Publishing House) (Brussels, Belgium, 1950–1952) composed by Arturs Bērziņš (1882–1962) or Latviešu almanahs (Latvian Almanac) (London, Great Britain, 1952–1957), as well as Dzimtenes kalendārs (The Calendar of Motherland) (Vesterosa, Sweden, 1972–1988) compiled by Kazimirs Vilnis (1907–1988), a Catholic dean. There is a special place in the history of calendars published in Latvian for Tāvu zemes kalendars (Fatherland’s Calendar), published by Vladislavs Locis (1912–1984). Its publication started already at the end of the 1930s still in Latvia, afterwards it was continued in Germany, and finally, in 1991, resumed in Latvia.
