Abstract:
Paul Klee (1879-1940) is undoubtedly the most notable historical figure to have suffered from systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). In this, the first in a series of vignettes on Klee's illness, I will explore a likely early feature of his condition - Raynaud phenomenon. In subsequent vignettes I will highlight other features of Klee's condition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Scolecodonts are the mouth pieces of jaw-bearing polychaete annelid worms that occur in abundance as microfossils in the fossil record. Historical scolecodont collections (e.g., Hinde, 1879, 1880, 1882; Stauffer, 1933, 1939; Eller, 1934, 1936, 1940, 1942) are of crucial importance for the taxonomy of fossil polychaetes because they often include taxa with nomenclatural priority over more recently established ones. One significant problem, however, is that most publications dealing with these collections have rudimentary hand-drawings of the fossils that do not allow unambiguous identifications. In this study, all specimens assigned to Arabellites by Hinde (1879) have been re-examined and photographed. Over the years Arabellites has been used for a plethora of morphologically variable scolecodonts of uncertain taxonomic affinity, rendering its status questionable (e.g., Kielan- Jaworowska, 1962, 1966; Kozur, 1970; Jansonius and Craig, 1971; Szaniawski and Wrona, 1973; Eriksson and Bergman, 2003). However, first-hand studies of the type material have allowed new discussions of this genus. Moreover, Glycerites Hinde, 1879, is briefly discussed as it proved to be intimately linked to Arabellites.

Abstract:
AbstractResearch on electrical discharges through rarefied gases was the subject of many studies in the nineteenth century. In 1879, William Crookes (1832-1919) produced, through a vacuum pump, a rarefied gas tube that provided a means of claiming to be the cathode ray, which later Joseph John Thomson (1856-1940) would call the electron of nature particulate. We argue for the importance of images and representations within the study of chemistry and, in light of this, the present paper portrays the experience of a tactile adaptation of Crookes tube that was used in classes of the history of the atomics models with a blind apprentice. Keywords: Including Education; Visual Deficiency; History of Chemistry.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Alpaida venger sp. nov. is described based on males and females from Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This species seems to be related to Alpaida scriba (Mello-Leitão, 1940) and Alpaida alticeps (Keyserling, 1879) due to similar body shape and color, but is easily distinguished by the very elongated median apophysis, the massive lobe of tegulum and the hooked paracymbium of male palp. Females have elongated epigyne as A. scriba, but can be distinguished by the wider lips and shorter scape.

Abstract:
This article interprets Klee’s journey into art in the context of the mystical teachings of Nicolas Berdyaev (1879–1940) and Klee’s trip to Italy. Berdyaev connects creativity with “divine Eros.” Therefore the creative act is erotic in nature. Klee’s art embodies Berdyaev’s creative ideal through an erotic love that he personally experiences, but that also has to pass through the fire of purification, of self-renunciation, of humility, and of asceticism in order that it might be transformed into creative love. The article suggests that Klee’s trip to Italy transforms Klee’s erotic energy into a creative or spiritual love, which his art illustrates.

Abstract:
Paul Klee (1879–1940), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, died at 60 years of age from complications of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). The precipitating event(s) of Klee’s scleroderma, as in most cases, will never be known. Among various potential factors, exposure to heavy metals, crystalline silica, and organic solvents—acting alone or in combination—can now be considered potential factors in the onset of Klee’s disease. By altering and modulating epigenetic determinants in a genetically susceptible host, these and other environmental factors may have led to perturbations of self-tolerance and inflammation culminating in Klee’s scleroderma.

Abstract:
After the 1927/28 upheaval in the communist movement, a complex relationship evolved between Chen Duxiu (1879–1942) and Leon Trotsky (1879–1940). To date little has been written about this relationship in the west. The relationship between Chen and Trotsky, however, deserves treatment in its own right for various reasons. First, an elucidation of the contacts between them should close a significant gap in the respective biographies of the two Opposition leaders. The intention is not only to define Trotsky's role as seen from Chen's perspective, but also to emphasize the Far Eastern component hitherto underestimated in biographies of Trotsky. Secondly, the reconstruction of the relationship between Chen and Trotsky constitutes an important, correcting supplement to our knowledge of the developments ( = Wirkungsgeschichte) of “Trotskyism” in China, as it has been described as a concrete phenomenon as well as an ideological-political undercurrent. Thirdly, a study of the relationship between Chen and Trotsky should provide a better understanding of relations between the Communists of China and of the Soviet Union.

Abstract:
Calochortus fuscus Schultes (1829: 131) was described based on material collected by Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinski in Mexico, who participated in two excursions in Mexico (1827–1832, 1841–1843). His collections were purchased by European institutions, especially by Botanische Staatssamlung München (M) in Munich, Germany. Calochortus fuscus is the only species of Calochortus section Cyclobothra Sweet (1828: t273) deposited at M. For his monograph, Ownbey (1940) had access to a photograph of the type of C. fuscus, but he confused this with C. spatulatus Watson (1879: 267) and described C. hintonii Bullock ex Ownbey (1940: 524) based on C. fuscus fresh material (McVaugh 1989). It is now well accepted that C. hintonii is a synonym of C. fuscus. The type locality of C. fuscus was not clarified in the description or the label attached to specimens. We tracked Karwinki’s excursions in Mexico and found out that he made a trip to Temascaltepec, State of Mexico, in September of 1827 (McVaugh 1972), which corresponds with the date on the type collection.

Abstract:
Asterosiphon Dangeard (1940: 720) presents a monospecific genus of xanthophytes, which can be easily distinguished from other genera in having filamentous siphons and exclusively asexual reproduction. Asterosiphon species forms macroscopic rosette of a few millimeters in diameter consisting of green procumbent and dichotomously branched siphons which are attached to wet soil by scarcely branched colorless rhizoids. The green filaments normally form the chains of akinetes germinating into the new siphons instantly or produce numerous aplanospores. Both ways of reproduction have been thoroughly investigated by Dangeard (1940, 1942) and subsequently by Rieth (1962a, b), who established identity of Asterosiphon siphons with Gongrosira-like stage of thalli ascribed previously to some representatives of the genus Vaucheria de Candolle (1801: 20) (Stahl 1879). Abstract:
Paul Klee was a major contributor to the development of modern European art. An ethnic German (although born in Switzerland) and a German citizen, he was persecuted by the Nazi government on political rather than racial grounds because of his allegedly “degenerate” artistic style. Dismissed from his teaching position, he emigrated to Switzerland in 1933; shortly afterward he became ill with systemic sclerosis and struggled with this condition for the remaining years of his life. Many publications have examined the effect of social rejection and illness on his art, but the present study considers the effect of these adversities on Klee’s attitude toward his fellow humans. After being an extreme misanthrope in his early adult years, he developed an attitude of cosmic indifference toward humanity during the First World War, which he then maintained until the end of 1939. Although his rejection by Germany had been a significant emotional blow, it was the physical suffering caused by his illness that led him, at the end of his life, to show compassion toward the suffering of other individuals. In this he was like tragic figures such as King Lear who learned from their great misfortunes to value humanity.

Abstract:
[Schelling’s philosophy of plastic arts is deeply rooted in his Philosophy of Nature, whether in the postulate of Nature as productivity or in the concepts of deceleration and a-concious. The parallel between Nature’s productivity and artistic creation is the cornerstone of the Schellinguian conception of mimesis qua emulation of nature as a productive force, and not a mere product. In this line of argument, some interpreters such as Beierwaltes, Frank and Schuback noticed similarities between the writings of abstract painters, particularly Paul Klee (1879-1940) and Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). However, only Schuback further developed a conceptual connection between Klee and Schelling based on their writings. Our proposal, in that sense, is to develop the connection between nature and abstract painting in Kandinsky and Klee, thus revealing the similarities between their tenets and Schelling’s.]

Abstract:
Freshwater Halacaridae are poorly known in Mexico. The only species reported so far is Limnohalacarus cultellatus Viets, 1940 from Quintana Roo, but the country is still a white spot for this group of mites. Recently, some halacarid specimens were collected in samples from two locations in Mexico City. Herein we present the records of two species: Porolohmanella violacea (Kramer, 1879), and Porohalacarus alpinus (Thor, 1910), which increase the number of epicontinental halacarids to three. These records are the first for the country and extend the known worldwide distribution range for each of these species. Future studies will certainly increase the number of halacarid species, and probably the percentage of species of these aquatic mites in Mexico.

Abstract:
This paper is the first in a two-part series treating the family Gelechiidae from the Southern Ural Mountains, including newly described species. The material was collected during 1996–2007 on 21 different Finnish-Russian expeditions. Catatinagma Rebel, 1903, stat. rev., is removed from synonymy of Apatetris Staudinger, 1879, and is now considered valid. Two generic names are synonymized: Coloptilia Fletcher, 1940, syn. n. of Catatinagma and Chilopselaphus Mann, 1867, syn. n. of Megacraspedus Zeller, 1839. A short introduction is given for the following unrevised genera: Apatetris Staudinger, 1879, Catatinagma Rebel, 1903 comb. rev., Caulastrocecis Chrétien, 1931 and Megacraspedus Zeller, 1839. Seventeen new species are described: Catatinagma kraterella Junnilainen & Nupponen sp. n., Metanarsia guberlica Nupponen sp. n., Caulastrocecis perexigella Junnilainen sp. n., Megacraspedus litovalvellus Junnilainen sp. n., Megacraspedus multispinella Junnilainen & Nupponen sp. n., Megacraspedus orenburgensis Junnilainen & Nupponen sp. n., Megacraspedus albovenata Junnilainen sp. n., Megacraspedus longipalpella Junnilainen sp. n., Monochroa uralensis Junnilainen sp. n., Teleiodes kaitilai Junnilainen sp. n., Athrips aquila Junnilainen sp. n., Athrips bidzilyai Junnilainen sp. n., Ephysteris tenuisaccus Nupponen sp. n., Hedma karsholti Nupponen sp. n., Lutilabria prolata Junnilainen & Nupponen sp. n., Syncopacma steppicolella Junnilainen sp. n. and Helcystogramma flavescens Junnilainen sp. n.

Abstract:
We obtained whole genome shotgun sequences and phylogenetically analyzed protein-coding regions of representative skipper butterflies from the genus Carcharodus Hübner, [1819] and its close relatives. Type species of all available genus-group names were sequenced. We find that species attributed to four exclusively Old World genera (Spialia Swinhoe, 1912, Gomalia Moore, 1879, Carcharodus Hübner, [1819] and Muschampia Tutt, 1906) form a monophyletic group that we call a subtribe Carcharodina Verity, 1940. In the phylogenetic trees built from various genomic regions, these species form 7 (not 4) groups that we treat as genera. We find that Muschampia Tutt, 1906 is not monophyletic, and the 5th group is formed by currently monotypic genus Favria Tutt, 1906 new status (type species Hesperia cribrellum Eversmann, 1841), which is sister to Gomalia. The 6th and 7th groups are composed of mostly African species presently placed in Spialia. These groups do not have names and are described here as Ernsta Grishin, gen. n. (type species Pyrgus colotes Druce, 1875) and Agyllia Grishin, gen. n. (type species Pyrgus agylla Trimen, 1889). Two subgroups are recognized in Ernsta: the nominal subgenus and a new one: Delaga Grishin, subgen. n. (type species Pyrgus delagoae Trimen, 1898). Next, we observe that Carcharodus is not monophyletic, and species formerly placed in subgenera Reverdinus Ragusa, 1919 and Lavatheria Verity, 1940 are here transferred to Muschampia. Furthermore, due to differences in male genitalia or DNA sequences, we reinstate Gomalia albofasciata Moore, 1879 and Gomalia jeanneli (Picard, 1949) as species, not subspecies or synonyms of Gomalia elma (Trimen, 1862), and Spialia bifida (Higgins, 1924) as a species, not subspecies of Spialia zebra (Butler, 1888). Sequencing of the type specimens reveals 2.2-3.2% difference in COI barcodes, the evidence that combined with wing pattern differences suggests a new status of a species for Spialia lugens (Staudinger, 1886) and Spialia carnea (Reverdin, 1927), formerly subspecies of Spialia orbifer (Hübner, [1823]).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This essay tackles Romania’s geocultural position and its consequences for localizing Romanian literature in South-Eastern rather than Eastern Europe by comparing critically the implicit ideological dimension of three types of imaginary spatial narratives: the historian Nicolae Iorga’s (1871–1940), the folklorist and comparatist D. Caracostea’s (1879–1964), and the literary critic Mircea Muthu’s (b. 1944). I chose these three perspectives because they illustrate the way different disciplines looked at Romanian culture’s geographical and symbolical location on the European map during the 20th century. These three contributed to the perception of Romanian culture as part of a South-Eastern cultural heritage. Originating in these ideological representations, there is a parallel tradition in Romanian literature that configures also a Southern identity. More than just a side note to the Eastern European framework still dominant in literary studies, to rethink the location of Romanian literature as a South-Eastern European one means to imagine an alternative paradigm that has different political consequences for configuring a more complex geocultural identity.

Abstract:
Ludwig Mayer (*1879, †?) was an significant collector of minerals from Bílina near Teplice. He personally searched minerals in terrain. He also purchased large amount of minerals from dealers or exchanged with other collectors. He deserved a number of interesting or completely new mineralogical findings, which were enriching the overall knowledge of mineralogical conditions of the Bohemian Central Highlands. Many of his findings were published by profesor Josef Emanuel Hibsch (*1852, †1940), the greatest expert on geological conditions of the Bohemian Central Highlands. From 1939 to 1945 Mayer was the manager of geological collections of the museum in Teplice. A total of 596 pieces of minerals from the Mayer’s collection came to the systematic part of the mineralogical collection of the National Museum in Prague. The core of this amount consists of documentary valuable minerals from several important mineralogical sites of the Central Bohemian Highlands, such as Dolní Zálezly, Církvice, Mariánská Rock in Ústí nad Labem, Radejčín and new site Chudoslavice with yellow crystals of chabazite, discovered by Mayer. A total of 54 samples of minerals from the Mayer collection were selected for the newly prepared permanent exhibition of minerals of the National Museum in Prague.

Abstract:
Abstract The discussion of floods in this paper covers the section of the Odra River basin from its source down to the mouth of the Nysa Klodzka River and the section of the Vistula River basin down to the Krakow profile. The area of the upper part of Odra River basin is 13,455 km2 and the length of the river bed in this section is ca. 273.0 km. In the reach examined, the Vistula River is 184.8 km long and has a catchment area of approximately 8,101 km2. Geographical and environmental conditions in the upper part of the Vistula and Odra Rivers basins are conducive to floods both in the summer and winter seasons. The analyses conducted for the 19th and 20th centuries demonstrate that two main types of floods can be distinguished. Floods with a single flood wave peak occurred in the following years in the upper Odra River basin: 1813, 1831, 1879, 1889, 1890 and 1896, and on the Vistula River they were recorded in 1805, 1813, 1816, 1818, 1826, 1830, 1834, 1844 and 1845. In the 20th century, similar phenomena were recorded on the Odra River in 1903, 1909, 1911, 1915, 1925, 1960, 1970 and 1985, and on the Vistula River they occurred in 1903, 1908, 1925, 1931, 1934, 1939, 1948, 1951, 1970, 1972, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 1999. The second category includes floods with two, three or more flood wave peaks. These are caused by successive episodes of high rainfall separated by dry periods that last for a few days, a fortnight or even several weeks. Such floods occurred on the upper Odra River in 1847, 1854, 1880, 1888, 1892, 1897 and 1899; while on the Vistula River only two (1839 and 1843) floods featured two flood wave peaks. In the 20th century on the upper Odra River, floods of this type occurred in 1902, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1972, 1977 and 1997; on the upper Vistula River, they were recorded in 1906, 1915, 1919, 1920, 1940, 1958, 1960 and 1987.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A revision of the trochid genera Gaza and Callogaza, inhabiting the deep waters of western Atlantic Ocean and eastern Pacific Ocean, is here provided. Species are separated mainly by shell characters, but anatomical features are also used in some species. The species considered in this study are: Gaza compta n. sp. (SE Brazil), G. daedala Watson, 1879 (Central Pacific), G. rathbuni Dall, 1890 (tropical W Pacific), G. fischeri Dall, 1889 (E Caribbean), G. superba (Dall, 1881) (Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean), G. cubana Clench & Aguayo, 1940 (N Caribbean), G. olivacea Quinn, 1991 (NE South America and SE Brazil), Callogaza watsoni Dall, 1881 (Gulf of Mexico), C. sericata (Kira, 1959) (NW Pacific) and C. frederici (Smith, 1906) (S India). Anatomical data are provided for: Gaza compta, G. olivacea, G, fischeri, G. superba and G. cubana. Both Gaza and Callogaza are characterized by having iridescent, thin-walled shell, with the outer lip deflected (determined growth), and a flat callus partially or completely covering the wide umbilicus, making it a hollow chamber. Anatomically, the examined Gaza spp. have long epipodial tentacles and two series of holes between the propodium and the base of the head. The number of these structures can assist in the differentiation of species. Based on similarities of the shell and comparison with species of other trochid genera, we conclude that Gaza and Callogaza have some characters in common, which most probably constitute synapomorphies that support a monophyletic branch of the family. Microgaza is not regarded as part of this trochid branch, but may rather belong to Solariellinae.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Historically, morphological characters have been used to support the monophyly, composition, and phylogenetic relationships of scorpion families. Although recent phylogenomic analyses have recovered most of these traditional higher-level relationships as non-monophyletic, certain key taxa have yet to be sampled using a phylogenomic approach. Salient among these is the monotypic genus Caraboctonus Pocock,1893, the type species of the family Caraboctonidae Kraepelin, 1905. Here, we examined the putative monophyly and phylogenetic placement of this family, sampling the library of C. keyserlingi Pocock, 1893 using high throughput transcriptomic sequencing. Our phylogenomic analyses recovered Caraboctonidae as polyphyletic due to the distant placement of the genera Caraboctonus and Hadrurus Thorell, 1876. Caraboctonus was stably recovered as the sister-group of the monotypic family Superstitioniidae Stahnke, 1940, whereas Hadrurus formed an unstable relationship with Uroctonus Thorell, 1876and Belisarius Simon, 1879. Four-cluster likelihood mapping revealed that the instability inherent to the placement of Hadrurus, Uroctonus and Belisarius was attributable to significant gene tree conflict in the internodes corresponding to their divergences. To redress the polyphyly of Caraboctonidae, the following systematic actions have been taken: (1) the family Caraboctonidae has been delimited to consist of 23 species in the genera Caraboctonus and Hadruroides Pocock, 1893; (2) Caraboctonidae, previously included in the superfamily Iuroidea Thorell, 1876 or as incertae sedis, is transferred to the superfamily Caraboctonoidea (new rank); (3) the superfamily Hadruroidea (new rank) is established and the status of Hadrurinae Stahnke, 1973 is elevated to family (Hadruridae new status) including 9 species in the genera Hadrurus and Hoffmannihadrurus Fet & Soleglad, 2004 and (4) we treat Uroctonus and Belisarius as insertae sedis with respect to superfamilial placement. Our systematic actions engender the monophyly of both Iuroidea and Caraboctonidae. Future phylogenomic investigations should target similar taxon-poor and understudied lineages of potential phylogenetic significance, which are anticipated to reveal additional non-monophyletic groups.

Abstract:
The earth scientists of Russia have long been interested in the history of geological knowledge. V. I. Vernadsky (1863-1945) and V. A. Obruchev (1861-1956) saw the necessity and actively supported research into the history of science in Russia. During the 1930-1940s M. S. Shatsky (1895-1960) published analyses of the ideas of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), R.I. Murchinson (1792-1871), and A. D. Archangelsky (1879-1940). He followed these with a series of papers devoted to the history of the evolution of theoretical and applied geology. In the early 1950s several works investigating actualistic and uniformitarian methods were published in the USSR. From the 1960s through the 1980s, the new fields of paleogeography and lithology evolved and a new branch of geology resulted from the prospecting and exploration of radioactive materials. In 1967, an International Committee on the History of Geological Knowledge was proposed by Soviet geologists and established at the 23rd International Geological Congress at Yerevan. It is presently known as "INHIGEO," a Commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences. INHIGEO now has 126 members from 35 countries. From 1967 to 1992, INHIGEO sponsored seventeen international symposia. One or two were held at each of the International Geological Congresses, which regularly convene every fourth year, and additional symposia have been held at frequent intervals. The complex process of the evolution of the natural sciences in Russia may be subdivided into separate periods. Since the late 1960s, geophysics has grown in importance and several major fields of geophysics have emerged. In addition, a general theory of the Earth has taken shape, geoecological studies have begun, and a theoretical history of geology and other earth sciences has evolved. The last quarter of this century has witnessed the publication of two multi-volume series: "Geological knowledge in the USSR," comprising 52 books and "Sketches on the history of geological knowledge," with 28 issues. These works outline the history of geological knowledge in the USSR from about 1965 to 1990.
