Abstract:
This study is about the emergence and development of the town of Teluk Anson or is now known by the name of Teluk Intan located in the Lower Perak district from 1874 to 1957 during the British colonial administration. Urban development was booming during the British administration due to colonial economic and political activities. This has led to several areas of economic activity in Perak emerging and expanding to a city while establishing a western-oriented urban concept. In terms of development, it had a positive impact on the urban development and socio-economic of society in Teluk Anson. Therefore, the study was fully carried out by using qualitative methods through document analysis approaches such as the Perak Secretariat and Perak Annual Report obtained from the National Archives of Malaysia. The use of secondary sources such as books and writings of studies on the economics and history of the town during the British colonial era was also used to reinforce the findings. The findings show that a number of economic activities had contributed to the development and transformation of the Teluk Anson urban landscape such as trading activities at the main wharf and commercial agriculture. This indirectly contributed to the development of the Teluk Anson urbanization network. Overall, the British administration policy in the state of Perak has driven the emergence and development of the Teluk Anson town and this was driven by the trade at the wharf and commercial agriculture. Thus, the Teluk Anson town was one of the major cities of trade during the British colonial era.

Abstract:
This paper is a review and revision of the tribe Sogdini (Coleoptera: Leoididae: Leiodinae) of North and Central America. It covers the following genera: Triarthron Märkel, 1840, with one species; Hydnobius Schmidt, 1841, with seven species; Stereus Wollaston, 1857, new for North America, with one species; Sogda Lopatin, 1961, new for North America, with two species; Kalohydnobius new genus, with three species; Macrohydnobius new genus, with six species; and Platyhydnobius new genus, with eight species. The species are inhabitants of northern and mountain forests or sandy habitats. Larvae and adults probably feed on subterranean fungi. The following new synonyms are recognized: Triarthron pennsylvanicum Horn, 1883 = T. lecontei Horn, 1868; Hydnobius luggeri Hatch, 1927 = H. substriatus LeConte, 1863; Hydnobius lobatus Hatch, 1936 = H. longidens LeConte, 1879; Hydnobius longulus LeConte, 1879 = Sogda obtusa (LeConte,1879); Hydnobius femoratus Hatch, 1936 = Kalohydnobius strigilatus (Horn, 1880); and Hydnobius stacesmithi Hatch, 1957 = Macrohydnobius matthewsii (Crotch, 1874). Hydnobius kiseri Hatch, 1936 and H. longidens LeConte, 1879 are resurrected from synonymy to valid species status. The following new combinations are established: Sogda obtusa (LeConte, 1879), ex Hydnobius; Kalohydnobius strigilatus (Horn, 1880), ex Hydnobius; Macrohydnobius contortus (Hatch, 1957), ex Hydnobius; M. crestonensis (Hatch, 1957), ex Hydnobius; M. matthewsii (Crotch, 1874), ex Hydnobius; M. simulator (Brown, 1932), ex Hydnobius; Platyhydnobius arizonensis (Horn, 1885), ex Hydnobius; and P. validus (Brown1932), ex Hydnobius. Lectotypes are designated for Hydnobius substriatus LeConte, 1863; H. pumilus LeConte, 1879; H. obtusus LeConte, 1879; H. longulus LeConte, 1879; H. strigilatus Horn, 1880 and H. matthewsii Crotch, 1874. New species are Hydnobius acarinus, H. autumnalis, Stereus arenarius, Sogda enigma, Kalohydnobius californicus, K. dentatus, Macrohydnobius montanus, M. tibiocalcaris, Platyhydnobius andersoni, P. bicolor, P. calvario, P. howdenorum, P. latigra, and P. newtonorum.

Abstract:
Heinrich Zangger, 1874-1957, an eminent professor of forensic medicine at the University of Zurich, was a scientist with far ranging interests in many fields. In the course of his own research in physics, he became a close friend of Albert Einstein. When a chair in physics at his university or the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) was to be filled, Zangger was frequently actively involved in the search for a candidate. In particular, he engaged himself strongly, and in unconventional ways, in order to have Einstein appointed as professor at the ETH in 1912.

Abstract:
This study utilized six genes (12S, 16S, 18S, 28S, COII and H3) from a total of 40 samples to construct maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) phylogenetic trees in order to infer the relationships between the morphologically similar genera Homalosilpha Stål, 1874 and Mimosilpha Bey-Bienko, 1957. The phylogenetic analysis showed the two genera have a close relationship and were recovered as sister groups based on ML and BI analyses. Four new species are described among these samples, i.e., Homalosilpha obtusangula sp. nov., Homalosilpha recta sp. nov., Homalosilpha alba sp. nov. and Homalosilpha clavellata sp. nov. based on morphological and COI data. A key to the worldwide Homalosilpha is provided.

Bertolini, Michele. "Le rapport entre forme et expression dans la perspective d'une esthétique morphologique : Konrad Fiedler et sa réception dans l'œuvre de Croce, Banfi et Cassirer." Paris, EHESS, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006EHES0095.

Abstract:
A dynamic theoryof art's finds its epistemological legitimation in the basic core of morphology : a thought of form catches the reality through the life of forms. The works of Konrad Fiedler (1841-1895), philosopher, theorist and art critic, are approached in this study starting from the essential elements of his thought : expressive movement, pure visibility, intuition, representation. The question of expression exceeds the plan of figurative art's theory putting itself in the middle of the investigation of philosophers who were looking for a global systematisation of cultural forms life in the first half of the twentieth century : Benedetto Croce and Antiono Banfi in Italy, Ernst Cassiner in Germany, as Fiedler's readers, following different ways, found in the expression, in his connections with the intuition and the perception, a conceptual operator at the same time conclusive and aporethic for the foundation of a philosophical system

Abstract:
From the first electric lights in London along Pall Mall, and in the Holborn Viaduct in 1878 to the nationalisation of National Grid in 1947, the narrative of the simple ascendency of a new technology over its outdated predecessor is essential to the way we have imagined electric light in London at the end of the nineteenth century. However, as this thesis will demonstrate, the interplay between gas and electric light - two co-existing and competing illuminary technologies - created a particular and peculiar landscape of light, a 'lightscape', setting London apart from its contemporaries throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Indeed, this narrative forms the basis of many assertions made in critical discussions of artificial illumination and technology in the late-twentieth century; however, this was not how electric light was understood at the time nor does it capture how electric light both captivated and eluded the imagination of contemporary Londoners. The influence of the electric light in the representations of London is certainly a literary question, as many of those writing during this period of electrification are particularly attentive to the city's rich and diverse lightscape. Though this has yet to be made explicit in existing scholarship, electric lights are the nexus of several important and ongoing discourses in the study of Victorian, Post-Victorian, Modernist, and twentieth-century literature. This thesis will address how the literary influence of the electric light and its relationship with its illuminary predecessors transcends the widespread electrification of London to engage with an imaginary London, providing not only a connection with our past experiences and conceptions of the city, modernity, and technology but also an understanding of what Frank Mort describes as the 'long cultural reach of the nineteenth century into the post-war period'.
