Abstract:
Twenty-four species of Orbiniidae, 12 new to science, are reported from continental shelf and slope (deep-sea) habitats of the western North Atlantic. The majority of new material was collected during reconnaissance and monitoring surveys along the entire U.S. Atlantic coast from New England to the Carolinas that were intended to understand the potential impacts of oil and gas exploration in poorly known offshore environments. Additional materials from shallow water and shelf habitats off New England and New York as part of other projects are also included. New collections of Califia schmitti (Pettibone, 1957), Leitoscoloplos acutus (Verrill, 1873), L. fragilis (Verrill, 1873), L. obovatus Mackie, 1987, L. robustus (Verrill, 1873), Scoloplos intermedius (Hartman, 1965), Orbinia swani (Pettibone, 1957), Phylo felix (Kinberg, 1866), P. norvegicus (Sars, 1872), P. ornatus (Verrill, 1873), and Questa trifurcata (Hobson, 1970) provide additional morphological details, variability, and extended geographic and bathymetric distributions of previously known species. New species include Leitoscoloplos pustulus n. sp., Scoloplos papillatus n. sp., S. pettiboneae n. sp., S. pseudoarmiger n. sp., S. verrilli n. sp., Leodamas cuneatus n. sp., L. mucronatus n. sp., L. notoaciculatus n. sp., Phylo paraornatus n. sp., Orbiniella acsara n. sp., O. armata n. sp., and O. mimica n. sp. Juveniles of some species of Leitoscoloplos and Scoloplos were found to resemble known species of the meiofaunal orbiniid genus Schroederella Laubier, 1962. As such, S. berkeleyi Laubier, 1971 is referred to synonymy with Leitoscoloplos acutus. More importantly, the genus Schroederella was found to be pre-occupied by Schroederella Enderlein, 1921 in the Insecta, Diptera, family Helomyzidae. Gesaschroederella nomen nov. is therefore proposed as a replacement name for the polychaete homonym.

Abstract:
Abstract In the city of Chernihiv, nematodes of epiphytic mosses were studied for the fi rst time. 40 nematode species belonging to 30 genera, 20 families and 8 orders were revealed. Most of the identifi ed species belonged to the order Rhabditida: 12 species or 30 % of total number. Nematodes of the order Plectida were the most abundant in the studied communities, they composed 61.21 % of total specimens collected. Nine species: Plectus parietinus (Bastian, 1865) Paramonov, 1964, Mesodorylaimus bastiani (Butschli, 1873), Geomonhystera villosa Butschli, 1837, Tylocephalus auriculatus (Butschli, 1873) Anderson, 1966, Aphelenchoides composticola Franklin, 1957, Panagrolaimus rigidus (Schneider, 1866) Thorne, 1937, Eudorylaimus circulifera Loof 1961, Plectus parvus (Bastian, 1865) Paramonov, 1964, Laimaphelenchus penardi (Steiner, 1914) Filipjev et Sch. Abstract:
Nematode communities were investigated in the soil, litter and epiphytic moss of natural mesophilic broad-leaved forest in the Mezin National Natural Park. A total of 75 species belonging to 55 genera, 32 families and 10 orders were identified. Results showed that taxonomic diversity of the nematode fauna in the soil was higher than in the litter and epiphytic moss. Soil-inhabiting nematodes were 53 species (43 genera, 27 families), litter nematodes — 42 species (32 genera, 19 families), whereas moss nematodes belonged to 25 species (23 genera, 16 families). The lowest value of Shannon diversity index was recorded in the moss (2.17), while it was the highest in the soil (3.25). In contrast, the abundance in nematode communities was the highest in epiphytic moss (mean value 4621.55 ind./100 g). The lowest nematode abundance (450.12 ind./100 g) was found in the forest soil. Rhabditis filiformis Bütschli, 1873 was recorded in the eudominant group in the forest soil (proportion in the community 14.83 %). Aphelenchoides composticola Franklin, 1957 (17.79 %), Mesodorylaimus bastiani Bütschli, 1873 (13.91 %) and Plectus cirratus Bastian, 1865 (15.8 %) were eudominants in the litter, and Aporcelaimellus paracentrocercus (de Coninck, 1935) (11.75 %), P. cirratus (20.1 %), Tylencholaimus teres Thorne, 1939 (35.21 %) in epiphytic moss.

Abstract:
Hasso von Wedel, usually “H. Wedel” on specimen labels, settled on the northwestern Caribbean coast of Panama in the province of Bocas del Toro in 1898 and sustained himself mainly through the production of picture postcards and as a photographer for the United Fruit Company. He learned to prepare bird specimens in 1926 and collected widely in Bocas del Toro for various museums, mainly Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology, at least up until 1939. Wedel made the first collections of birds from the easternmost Caribbean coast of Panama in the Comarca de San Blas at intervals from 1929 until 1934. He learned the fundamentals of botanical collecting in 1938 and made extensive collections of plants for the Missouri Botanical Garden from then until 1941, his specimens forming the basis for dozens of presumed new species, at least ten of which were named for him. His biological explorations appear to have ceased about the time the United States entered the Second World War, although he lived in Changuinola, Bocas del Toro, until his death at Almirante in 1957.

Abstract:
The typical species of Parks' stromatoporoid genus Stictostroma designated as Stromatopora mammillata Nicholson, 1873, and renamed S. mamilliferum to avoid homonymy by Galloway and St. Jean (1957), had unknown internal structure because Nicholson's type specimens were not sectioned. Parks' (1936) diagnosis of generic characters was based on specimens from a location (Gorrie) far from the type locality of S. mammillata that he assumed were conspecific with Nicholson's species. Investigation of the type specimens of Stromatopora mammillata = Stictostroma mamilliferum by thin sections shows that they are very poorly preserved and not conspecific with the specimens on which Parks based the genus. Because paleontologists for many years have used Stictostroma as amended from Parks' description by Galloway and St. Jean, the species from Gorrie that clearly shows these characters should be recognized as the typical species and given a new name.

Abstract:
Hydroclimatic conditions and related water resources change in the Tibetan Plateau is one of the main concerns for future sustainable development in China. This study presents a 254-year precipitation reconstruction from August of the previous year to June of the current year for the northeastern Tibetan Plateau based on tree-ring width data of tree-ring cores of Picea crassifolia from three sampling sites. The precipitation reconstruction explained 51.4% of the variance in instrumental precipitation during the calibration period 1958–2013. Dry periods with precipitation below the 254-year average value occurred during 1848–1865, 1873–1887, 1898–1923, and 1989–2003, and wet periods (precipitation above the mean) occurred during 1769–1785, 1798–1833, 1924–1938, 1957–1968, and 2004–2013. Spatial correlation analyses with the precipitation gridded dataset showed that our reconstruction contains some strong regional-scale precipitation signals for the upper Yellow River Basin. Our precipitation reconstruction also agreed in general with other dendroclimatic precipitation reconstructions from surrounding regions. In addition, reconstructed precipitation changes were consistent with the streamflow variation of the Yellow River.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We report the publication of 953 DNA barcodes of forest leaf litter beetles from central Taiwan, in total representing 334 species of 36 beetle families. This is the first bulk of data from the Taiwanese Leaf Litter beetles project focused on uncovering the under-explored diversity of leaf litter beetles across Taiwan. Based on these data, we provide the first records of the following taxa for Taiwan: family Sphindidae (genus Aspidiphorus Ziegler, 1821); tribes Trichonychini, Ctenistini, and Bythinoplectini (all Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae); genera Gyrelon Hinton, 1942, Thyroderus Sharp, 1885, Cautomus Sharp, 1885 (all Cerylonidae), Dermatohomoeus Hlisnikovský, 1963 (Leiodidae), Paraploderus Herman, 1970 (Staphylinidae: Oxytelinae), Thinocharis Kraatz, 1859 (Staphylinidae: Paederinae), Cephennodes Reitter, 1884, Napoconnus Franz, 1957 (both Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae), Bicava Belon, 1884 (Latridiidae), Otibazo Morimoto, 1961, Seleuca Pascoe, 1871 and Acallinus Morimoto, 1962 (all Curculionidae); species Oodes (Lachnocrepis) japonicus (Bates, 1873) (Carabidae: Licininae), Drusilla obliqua (Bernhauer, 1916) (Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae) and Coccotrypes advena Blandford, 1894 (Curculionidae: Scolytinae). The records of Anapleus Horn, 1873 (Histeridae) and Batraxis Reitter, 1882 (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) have been confirmed. The male of Sivacrypticus taiwanicus Kaszab, 1964 (Archeocrypticidae) is described for the first time. Gyrelon jenpani Hu, Fikáček & Matsumoto, sp. nov. (Cerylonidae) is described, illustrated, and compared with related species. DNA barcodes associated larvae of 42 species with adults, we are concisely illustrating some of these: Oodes japonicus, Perigona cf. nigriceps Dejean, 1831 (both Carabidae), Ptilodactyla sp. (Ptilodactylidae), Maltypus ryukyuanus Wittmer, 1970 (Cantharidae), Drusilla obliqua, Myrmecocephalus brevisulcus (Pace, 2008), Diochus sp., Mimopinophilus sp. (all Staphylinidae), Stelidota multiguttata Reitter, 1877, Lasiodites inaequalis (Grouvelle, 1914) (both Nitidulidae), Lagria scutellaris Pic, 1910, and Anaedus spinicornis Kaszab, 1973 (both Tenebrionidae). We also report the first cases of Rickettsia infections in Scydmaeninae and Pselaphinae. All data (sequences, metadata, and voucher photos) are made public in BOLD database and in a Zenodo Archive.

Japanese species and genera of the tribe Smicromyrmini Bischoff, 1920 are revised. Most of the relevant types were examined. The following eight species in the genera Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870, Nemka Lelej, 1985, Mickelomyrme Lelej, 1995, Andreimyrme Lelej, 1995, Ephucilla Lelej, 1995 and Sinotilla Lelej, 1995 are recognized from Japan: Sm. lewisi Mickel, 1935, ♂♀; N. yasumatsui (Mickel, 1936), stat. rev. et comb. nov., ♂♀; M. hageni (Zavattari, 1913), ♂♀; A. substriolata (Chen, 1957), ♀ (Amami-ôshima Is., Okinawa-jima Is.); E. yoshitakei sp. nov., ♂♀ (Amami-ôshima Is.), E. suginoi sp. nov., ♂♀ (Okinawa-jima Is.), E. brevitegula sp. nov., ♂♀ (Ishigaki-jima Is., Iriomote-jima Is.); Si. jambar sp. nov., ♂ (Okinawa-jima Is.). The genera Andreimyrme and Sinotilla are newly recorded from Japan. Nemka wotani (Zavattari, 1913) and Ephucilla naja (Zavattari, 1913) are excluded from the Japanese fauna. New synonymies are proposed for N. wotani (Zavattari, 1913) [=Smicromyrme chihpenchia Tsuneki, 1993, syn. nov.], N. limi limi (Chen, 1957) [=Smicromyrme limi nanhai Chen, 1957, syn. nov.], A. substriolata [=Smicromyrme tridentiens Chen, 1957, syn. nov.] and Neotrogaspidia pustulata (Smith, 1873) [=Smicromyrme yakushimensis Yasumatsu, 1934, syn. nov.]. Phimenes flavopictus formosanus (Zimmermann, 1931) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae) is recorded as a host of Ephucilla brevitegula. Other new records include: Mickelomyrme athalia (Pagden, 1934) from China (Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan) and Vietnam (Hoa Binh), M. bakeri (Mickel, 1934) from Malaysia (Borneo) and Indonesia (Sulawesi), M. pusillaeformis (Hammer, 1962) from Indonesia (Bali), Andreimyrme sarawakensis Lelej, 1996 from Peninsular Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and A. substriolata from Laos (Xiengkhouang, Houapanh), Thailand (Chiang Mai), Peninsular Malaysia (Kuala Terengganu) and Indonesia (Sumatra). Distributions of Japanese smicromyrmine species are classified into the following three patterns: Asian continental-Palaearctic Japan (Sm. lewisi and N. yasumatsui), Taiwan-Ryûkyû (M. hageni, E. yoshitakei, E. suginoi, E. brevitegula, Si. jambar) and Asian continental-Ryûkyû (A. substriolata). Species of Asian continental-Palaearctic Japan are widely distributed in Palaearctic part of Japan and eastern part of Eurasia, or have the closest relative in continental Asia. They are considered to be native to Japan since it was a part of Eurasia, or have immigrated to Japan through the land bridge between Korean Peninsula and Japan by the end of the Upper Pleistocene. Abstract:

Abstract:
The species considered in the genus Rhizopulvinaria were revised on the base of morphological and ecological data. Significant intraspecific morphological variability was shown for Rh. artemisiae s. l. The mode of life and reproductive biology of this species is briefly discussed. The majority of nominal species of Rhizopulvinaria described by different authors are considered to be morphological varieties of a single species Rh. artemisiae Signoret, 1873. Thus, the following species are placed in the synonymy of Rh. artemisiae: Rh. retamae (Hall, 1923), Rh. halli Borchsenius, 1957, Rh. turkestanica (Arkhangelskaya, 1931), Rh. grassei (Balachowsky, 1936), Rh. dianthi (Bodenheimer, 1943), Rh. nevesi (Gómez-Menor Ortega, 1946), Rh. armeniaca Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. grandicula Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. hissarica Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. megriensis Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. minima Borchsenius, Rh. pyrethri Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. spinifera Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. transcaspica Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. turkmenica Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. variabilis Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. virgulata Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. viridis Borchsenius, 1952, Rh. polispina Matesova, 1960, Rh. quadrispina Matesova, 1960, Rh. solitudina Matesova, 1960, Rh. zaisanica Matesova, 1960, Rh. arenaria Canard, 1967, Rh. gracilis Canard, 1967, Rh. maritima Canard, 1967, Rh. saxatilis Canard, 1967, Rh. rhizophila Bazarov, 1963, Rh. saxosa Shmelev, 1971, Rh. zygophylli Bazarov & Shmelev, 1975, Rh. ucrainica Tereznikova, 1981.

A list comprising 236 species in the family Gelechiidae from the southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2007 on 21 different Finnish-Russian expeditions. The following new combinations are proposed: Caulastrocecis interstratella (Christoph, 1873) comb. n., Megacraspedus balneariellus (Chrétien, 1907) comb. n., Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867) comb. n., Megacraspedus lagopellus Herrich-Schäffer, 1860 comb. rev., Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926) comb. n., Scrobipalpa adaptata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n., Scrobipalpa dorsoflava (Povolný, 1996) comb. n., Scrobipalpa notata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n. and Scrobipalpa punctata (Povolný, 1996) comb. n. Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987 stat. rev. is raised to the species rank (from subsp. of N. sceptrophora (Meyrick, 1926)). Previously unknown females of four species are described: Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926), Monochroa nomadella (Zeller, 1868), Ivanauskiella psamathias (Meyrick, 1891) and Filatima zagulajevi Anikin & Piskunov, 1996. Trichembola neurophanes (Meyrick, 1926) syn. n. is shown to be a synonym of Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867). Three separate species complexes are briefly discussed: Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, Stomopteryx remissella (Zeller, 1847) and Aristotelia subericinella (Duponchel, 1843); each of them seems to contain unresolved taxonomic problems. Three species are reported for the first time from Europe: Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987, Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, and Anarsia sibirica Park & Ponomarenko, 1996. Abstract:
This article is a publication of letters of Nikolai Petrovich Ottokar (1884-1957), Russian emigre historian, specialist in the history of the Florentine Republic, professor at the University of Florence, to his colleague and opponent Gaetano Salvemini (1873-1957), established authority in Italian historiography, fervent antifascist, and emigrant as well. The author feels that the historiography implies that there was a certain strain between two historians that stemmed in Ottokar's harsh criticism of Salvemini’s concept of the history of late Duecento era Florence, which he proposed in 1899. Also Ottokar succeeded Salvemini at the Department of Contemporary History after Salvemini was expelled by the fascists from the University of Florence. The scholarship cites Ottokar’s manifest ‘loyalty’ to the fascist regime in Italy, including his likely party membership. It recalls his cooperation in a number of scientific projects of the fascist era, for instance, the Enciclopedia italiana. The author feels that the texts published below allow to correct this outlook and also to add several significant details to the research field. First, as follows from the texts below, the relationship between two historians was clearly not strained, but rather friendly. Secondly, the published letters add a number of interesting details to the biography of the Russian scientist. It should be noted that the Italian scientist played an important role in Ottokar’s life in 1924-1925. Apparently, Salvemini helped Ottokar to settle in Florence, where he emigrated from Perm in 1921. Apparently, Ottokar began his work at the University of Florence at the instigation of the Italian scientist. This, by the way, can testify, albeit indirectly, of a rather longer acquaintance of two scientists, which could have begun in the early 1910s, during N.P. Ottokar’s international trip. Letters are published from autographs stored in the fond of Gaetano Salvemini in the Istituto storico Toscana della Resistenza in Italian and in Russian translation by the author accomplished with permission of the Comitato Salvemini.

Abstract:
Abstract Henry Samuel Purdon (1843–1906) was the pioneer of dermatology in Northern Ireland. Born into a family of doctors, Purdon qualified as a physician in Scotland, earning an M.D. (Glasglow) and an L.R.C.P. (Edinburgh). His interest in dermatology started under the influence of McCall Anderson’s dermatological teaching in Glasglow. After his return to Belfast, he quickly gained the public approval in an open meeting at 12 Wellington Place, resulting in the establishment of ‘The Belfast Dispensary for Diseases of the Skin’ in 1865. With creativity, he made wax models of skin diseases to gain financial support to fund the institute. The models included lupus vulgaris, which was very prevalent during that time. With the steady increase in attendance, the dispensary was renamed ‘The Belfast Hospital for Diseases of the Skin’ in 1866. In 1868, the Belfast Charitable Society funded the construction of a new hospital in Regent Street, which was opened in 1869. This new building provided mainly outpatient facilities with consultation rooms and an operating theatre, which were deemed sufficient, in addition with eight inpatient beds. Despite hectic clinical commitments, in 1870 Purdon became the editor of the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine, which invited articles from the USA, and from Europe and the UK. Further, Purdon published three dermatology textbooks, titled On Neurotic Cutaneous Disease, Including Erythema (1869), Classification, Correct Dietary, and Treatment of Diseases of the Skin: as Practised at the Belfast Hospital of the Skin (1889) and A Treatise on Cutaneous Medicine and Disease of the Skin (1875), which recorded his clinical experience. With Purdon’s famous reputation in dermatology, the need of the service had drastically increased. His fame attracted funding of £4000 from philanthropist Edward Benn, to build a new skin hospital on Glenravel Street in 1873. The Benn Skin Hospital was opened in 1875. This hospital was fully furnished with the finest amenities, with 30 hospital beds and a suite of baths to meet service demand. Purdon was elected president of Benn’s hospital and held this position until his death, at the age of 62. Purdon’s legacy in dermatology was carried down by his son, Elias Bell Purdon, until the hospital was destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb during the Belfast Blitz in 1941. In 1957, ‘The Purdon Skin Ward’ in the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast was established to recognize Purdon’s service to dermatology.

We report on the play entitled Le Pain quotidien (The daily bread) by Marcel Réja (1873–1957), a French alienist and historian of art in asylums. He also wrote short plays, although he is less well known as a playwright. The plays were printed just in time for the performance, which often took place on the day of the asylum fair. Here, we discuss a one-act play consisting of four scenes in which the actors are his patients.

Abstract:
AbstractThe stoichiometry of equations was revisited in light of the Law of Conservation of Matter at an atomic, elemental level. For a balanced chemical equation following the simplest general model aA → bB, the fact that ${a \over b} = {{{n_A}} \over {{n_B}}}$, where nA is the number of moles of A consumed and nB is the number of moles of B produced in the reaction during the experiment, was used to address the de Donder relation, introduced by Theophile de Donder (1873–1957). While crediting the Belgian scientist for pointing out that “the reaction-ratio method” may be utilized for stoichiometry, the inverse de Donder relation was applied to problems in reaction stoichiometry. Several examples were used to show that the latter relation can be used to form proportions in order to rapidly solve such stoichiometry problems and to do so with fundamental chemical understanding. Educators in general chemistry were encouraged to teach the discussed method in their courses.

Abstract:
Abstract Gaetano Salvemini (1873–1957) is one of the most influential intellectuals of Italian and European twentieth-century history. As 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of Salvemini's birth, this special issue of Modern Italy aims to attract the attention of an international readership and contribute to filling the gap in scholarly publications in English, offering a tool to approach Salvemini's intellectual production and biography. We have chosen to focus on four aspects of Salvemini's life that we consider particularly suitable for introducing his personal trajectory and the evolution of his thinking, adopting a transnational approach: his interpretation of the Great War and the Adriatic question; his antifascist exile in Great Britain and, from 1934, in the United States; and the publication of his most important studies on Fascist Italy. The choice of these topics aims to shed light on Salvemini's contacts and stimulating exchanges with foreign scholars, his international experiences, and how these transformed his ideas on Liberal and Fascist Italy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The curtain rose. The howling of desert wind filled the performance hall in the Shanghai Grand Theatre. Into the center stage, where a scenic construction of a mountain cliff and a desert landscape was dimly lit, entered the character of the Daoist priest Wang Yuanlu (1849–1931), performed by Chen Yizong. Dressed in a worn and dusty outfit of dark blue cotton, characteristic of Daoist priests, Wang began to sweep the floor. After a few moments, he discovered a hidden chambre sealed inside one of the rock sanctuaries carved into the cliff.Signaled by the quick, crystalline, stirring wave of sound from the chimes, a melodious Chinese ocarina solo joined in slowly from the background. Astonished by thousands of Buddhist sūtra scrolls, wall paintings, and sculptures he had just accidentally discovered in the caves, Priest Wang set his broom aside and began to examine these treasures. Dawn had not yet arrived, and the desert sky was pitch-black. Priest Wang held his oil lamp high, strode rhythmically in excitement, sat crossed-legged in a meditative pose, and unfolded a scroll. The sound of the ocarina became fuller and richer and the texture of the music more complex, as several other instruments joined in.Below is the opening scene of the award-winning, theatrical dance-drama Dunhuang, My Dreamland, created by China’s state-sponsored Lanzhou Song and Dance Theatre in 2000. Figure 1a: Poster Side A of Dunhuang, My Dreamland Figure 1b: Poster Side B of Dunhuang, My DreamlandThe scene locates the dance-drama in the rock sanctuaries that today are known as the Dunhuang Mogao Caves, housing Buddhist art accumulated over a period of a thousand years, one of the best well-known UNESCO heritages on the Silk Road. Historically a frontier metropolis, Dunhuang was a strategic site along the Silk Road in northwestern China, a crossroads of trade, and a locus for religious, cultural, and intellectual influences since the Han dynasty (206 B.C.E.–220 C.E.). Travellers, especially Buddhist monks from India and central Asia, passing through Dunhuang on their way to Chang’an (present day Xi’an), China’s ancient capital, would stop to meditate in the Mogao Caves and consult manuscripts in the monastery's library. At the same time, Chinese pilgrims would travel by foot from China through central Asia to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, playing a key role in the exchanges between ancient China and the outside world. Travellers from China would stop to acquire provisions at Dunhuang before crossing the Gobi Desert to continue on their long journey abroad. Figure 2: Dunhuang Mogao CavesThis article approaches the idea of “abroad” by examining the present-day imagination of journeys along the Silk Road—specifically, staged performances of the various Silk Road journey-themed dance-dramas sponsored by the Chinese state for enhancing its cultural and foreign policies since the 1970s (Kuang). As ethnomusicologists have demonstrated, musicians, choreographers, and playwrights often utilise historical materials in their performances to construct connections between the past and the present (Bohlman; Herzfeld; Lam; Rees; Shelemay; Tuohy; Wade; Yung: Rawski; Watson). The ancient Silk Road, which linked the Mediterranean coast with central China and beyond, via oasis towns such as Samarkand, has long been associated with the concept of “journeying abroad.” Journeys to distant, foreign lands and encounters of unknown, mysterious cultures along the Silk Road have been documented in historical records, such as A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms (Faxian) and The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions (Xuanzang), and illustrated in classical literature, such as The Travels of Marco Polo (Polo) and the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West (Wu). These journeys—coming and going from multiple directions and to different destinations—have inspired contemporary staged performance for audiences around the globe.Home and Abroad: Dunhuang and the Silk RoadDunhuang, My Dreamland (2000), the contemporary dance-drama, staged the journey of a young pilgrim painter travelling from Chang’an to a land of the unfamiliar and beyond borders, in search for the arts that have inspired him. Figure 3: A scene from Dunhuang, My Dreamland showing the young pilgrim painter in the Gobi Desert on the ancient Silk RoadFar from his home, he ended his journey in Dunhuang, historically considered the northwestern periphery of China, well beyond Yangguan and Yumenguan, the bordering passes that separate China and foreign lands. Later scenes in Dunhuang, My Dreamland, portrayed through multiethnic music and dances, the dynamic interactions among merchants, cultural and religious envoys, warriors, and politicians that were making their own journey from abroad to China. The theatrical dance-drama presents a historically inspired, re-imagined vision of both “home” and “abroad” to its audiences as they watch the young painter travel along the Silk Road, across the Gobi Desert, arriving at his own ideal, artistic “homeland”, the Dunhuang Mogao Caves. Since his journey is ultimately a spiritual one, the conceptualisation of travelling “abroad” could also be perceived as “a journey home.”Staged more than four hundred times since it premiered in Beijing in April 2000, Dunhuang, My Dreamland is one of the top ten titles in China’s National Stage Project and one of the most successful theatrical dance-dramas ever produced in China. With revenue of more than thirty million renminbi (RMB), it ranks as the most profitable theatrical dance-drama ever produced in China, with a preproduction cost of six million RMB. The production team receives financial support from China’s Ministry of Culture for its “distinctive ethnic features,” and its “aim to promote traditional Chinese culture,” according to Xu Rong, an official in the Cultural Industry Department of the Ministry. Labeled an outstanding dance-drama of the Chinese nation, it aims to present domestic and international audiences with a vision of China as a historically multifaceted and cosmopolitan nation that has been in close contact with the outside world through the ancient Silk Road. Its production company has been on tour in selected cities throughout China and in countries abroad, including Austria, Spain, and France, literarily making the young pilgrim painter’s “journey along the Silk Road” a new journey abroad, off stage and in reality.Dunhuang, My Dreamland was not the first, nor is it the last, staged performances that portrays the Chinese re-imagination of “journeying abroad” along the ancient Silk Road. It was created as one of many versions of Dunhuang bihua yuewu, a genre of music, dance, and dramatic performances created in the early twentieth century and based primarily on artifacts excavated from the Mogao Caves (Kuang). “The Mogao Caves are the greatest repository of early Chinese art,” states Mimi Gates, who works to increase public awareness of the UNESCO site and raise funds toward its conservation. “Located on the Chinese end of the Silk Road, it also is the place where many cultures of the world intersected with one another, so you have Greek and Roman, Persian and Middle Eastern, Indian and Chinese cultures, all interacting. Given the nature of our world today, it is all very relevant” (Pollack). As an expressive art form, this genre has been thriving since the late 1970s contributing to the global imagination of China’s “Silk Road journeys abroad” long before Dunhuang, My Dreamland achieved its domestic and international fame. For instance, in 2004, The Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara—one of the most representative (and well-known) Dunhuang bihua yuewu programs—was staged as a part of the cultural program during the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. This performance, as well as other Dunhuang bihua yuewu dance programs was the perfect embodiment of a foreign religion that arrived in China from abroad and became Sinicized (Kuang). Figure 4: Mural from Dunhuang Mogao Cave No. 45A Brief History of Staging the Silk Road JourneysThe staging of the Silk Road journeys abroad began in the late 1970s. Historically, the Silk Road signifies a multiethnic, cosmopolitan frontier, which underwent incessant conflicts between Chinese sovereigns and nomadic peoples (as well as between other groups), but was strongly imbued with the customs and institutions of central China (Duan, Mair, Shi, Sima). In the twentieth century, when China was no longer an empire, but had become what the early 20th-century reformer Liang Qichao (1873–1929) called “a nation among nations,” the long history of the Silk Road and the colourful, legendary journeys abroad became instrumental in the formation of a modern Chinese nation of unified diversity rooted in an ancient cosmopolitan past. The staged Silk Road theme dance-dramas thus participate in this formation of the Chinese imagination of “nation” and “abroad,” as they aestheticise Chinese history and geography. History and geography—aspects commonly considered constituents of a nation as well as our conceptualisations of “abroad”—are “invariably aestheticized to a certain degree” (Bakhtin 208). Diverse historical and cultural elements from along the Silk Road come together in this performance genre, which can be considered the most representative of various possible stagings of the history and culture of the Silk Road journeys. In 1979, the Chinese state officials in Gansu Province commissioned the benchmark dance-drama Rain of Flowers along the Silk Road, a spectacular theatrical dance-drama praising the pure and noble friendship which existed between the peoples of China and other countries in the Tang dynasty (618-907 C.E.). While its plot also revolves around the Dunhuang Caves and the life of a painter, staged at one of the most critical turning points in modern Chinese history, the work as a whole aims to present the state’s intention of re-establishing diplomatic ties with the outside world after the Cultural Revolution. Unlike Dunhuang, My Dreamland, it presents a nation’s journey abroad and home. To accomplish this goal, Rain of Flowers along the Silk Road introduces the fictional character Yunus, a wealthy Persian merchant who provides the audiences a vision of the historical figure of Peroz III, the last Sassanian prince, who after the Arab conquest of Iran in 651 C.E., found refuge in China. By incorporating scenes of ethnic and folk dances, the drama then stages the journey of painter Zhang’s daughter Yingniang to Persia (present-day Iran) and later, Yunus’s journey abroad to the Tang dynasty imperial court as the Persian Empire’s envoy.Rain of Flowers along the Silk Road, since its debut at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on the first of October 1979 and shortly after at the Theatre La Scala in Milan, has been staged in more than twenty countries and districts, including France, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Russia, Latvia, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and recently, in 2013, at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York.“The Road”: Staging the Journey TodayWithin the contemporary context of global interdependencies, performing arts have been used as strategic devices for social mobilisation and as a means to represent and perform modern national histories and foreign policies (Davis, Rees, Tian, Tuohy, Wong, David Y. H. Wu). The Silk Road has been chosen as the basis for these state-sponsored, extravagantly produced, and internationally staged contemporary dance programs. In 2008, the welcoming ceremony and artistic presentation at the Olympic Games in Beijing featured twenty apsara dancers and a Dunhuang bihua yuewu dancer with long ribbons, whose body was suspended in mid-air on a rectangular LED extension held by hundreds of performers; on the giant LED screen was a depiction of the ancient Silk Road.In March 2013, Chinese president Xi Jinping introduced the initiatives “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” during his journeys abroad in Kazakhstan and Indonesia. These initiatives are now referred to as “One Belt, One Road.” The State Council lists in details the policies and implementation plans for this initiative on its official web page, www.gov.cn. In April 2013, the China Institute in New York launched a yearlong celebration, starting with "Dunhuang: Buddhist Art and the Gateway of the Silk Road" with a re-creation of one of the caves and a selection of artifacts from the site. In March 2015, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China’s top economic planning agency, released a new action plan outlining key details of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative. Xi Jinping has made the program a centrepiece of both his foreign and domestic economic policies. One of the central economic strategies is to promote cultural industry that could enhance trades along the Silk Road.Encouraged by the “One Belt, One Road” policies, in March 2016, The Silk Princess premiered in Xi’an and was staged at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing the following July. While Dunhuang, My Dreamland and Rain of Flowers along the Silk Road were inspired by the Buddhist art found in Dunhuang, The Silk Princess, based on a story about a princess bringing silk and silkworm-breeding skills to the western regions of China in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) has a different historical origin. The princess's story was portrayed in a woodblock from the Tang Dynasty discovered by Sir Marc Aurel Stein, a British archaeologist during his expedition to Xinjiang (now Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region) in the early 19th century, and in a temple mural discovered during a 2002 Chinese-Japanese expedition in the Dandanwulike region. Figure 5: Poster of The Silk PrincessIn January 2016, the Shannxi Provincial Song and Dance Troupe staged The Silk Road, a new theatrical dance-drama. Unlike Dunhuang, My Dreamland, the newly staged dance-drama “centers around the ‘road’ and the deepening relationship merchants and travellers developed with it as they traveled along its course,” said Director Yang Wei during an interview with the author. According to her, the show uses seven archetypes—a traveler, a guard, a messenger, and so on—to present the stories that took place along this historic route. Unbounded by specific space or time, each of these archetypes embodies the foreign-travel experience of a different group of individuals, in a manner that may well be related to the social actors of globalised culture and of transnationalism today. Figure 6: Poster of The Silk RoadConclusionAs seen in Rain of Flowers along the Silk Road and Dunhuang, My Dreamland, staging the processes of Silk Road journeys has become a way of connecting the Chinese imagination of “home” with the Chinese imagination of “abroad.” Staging a nation’s heritage abroad on contemporary stages invites a new imagination of homeland, borders, and transnationalism. Once aestheticised through staged performances, such as that of the Dunhuang bihua yuewu, the historical and topological landscape of Dunhuang becomes a performed narrative, embodying the national heritage. The staging of Silk Road journeys continues, and is being developed into various forms, from theatrical dance-drama to digital exhibitions such as the Smithsonian’s Pure Land: Inside the Mogao Grottes at Dunhuang (Stromberg) and the Getty’s Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road (Sivak and Hood). They are sociocultural phenomena that emerge through interactions and negotiations among multiple actors and institutions to envision and enact a Chinese imagination of “journeying abroad” from and to the country.ReferencesBakhtin, M.M.
