Abstract:
Surgical antisepsis and asepsis established the standard of using scientific evidence to determine surgical practice. The microbiological discoveries of Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) were the inspiration for Joseph Lister's (1827–1912) use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic on surgical wounds. German and Swiss surgeons invented aseptic surgical practice based on the studies of Robert Koch (1843–1910), a life-saving revolution in medicine as profound as anesthesia. Together they changed human history, sparing millions the horrors of hospital gangrene and making the entire body accessible to surgical intervention. In the United States, surgeons followed the lead of their brethren across the Atlantic. Americans, characteristically pragmatic, naturally resisted what they saw as unnecessary complexity in Listerism. Once they accepted germ theory, the undeniable scientific evidence led to the rapid acceptance of asepsis. Among the wide-ranging effects of this transition in practice were the creation of the current model of the academic department of surgery and the modern concept of surgical professionalism.

Abstract:
The Parliamentary Act of 1843 that eradicated the duopoly of Covent Garden and Drury Lane affected London taverns as well as theatres. To skirt the ban on drama, minor theatres had long interpolated musical interludes into any sort of play, thus naturalizing indoors a variety format more common to the fairground or circus. The growing taste for miscellaneous entertainment was also served by tavern saloons, where variety bills supplemented alcoholic conviviality. The Act of 1843, amending the licensing act of 1737, merely recognized this fact of life and extended a welcoming hand to these and other performance spaces. All places of entertainment holding a “burletta license” might stage plays, provided that smoking and the sale of spirituous beverages were banned from the premises.

Abstract:
Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a severe pathology that greatly affects the quality of life, and increases morbidity and mortality of patients owing to the augmentation of cardiovascular events. Treatment of GHD is challenging, mainly because there is no specific characteristic sign or symptom that can be used to make a clear diagnosis. There is need for an unequivocal diagnosis of GHD to avoid unnecessary treatment with GH, because the available provocative tests (GH stimulation tests) are not specific and sensitive enough, and are contraindicated in some patients. Ghrelin is an endogenous peptide that stimulates GH secretion by interacting with a G-protein-coupled receptor named ghrelin receptor (GH secretagogue receptor 1a, GHS-R1a). Given this, a GH stimulation test using ghrelin or its analogues appears to be attractive. In this paper, a modified tripeptide first named JMV-1843 in the laboratory is briefly presented. It is potent and selective in stimulating the release of GH and is orally active. It has been recently commercialised for the diagnosis of adult GH deficiency under the tradename Macrilen. The test using this compound appears to be reliable, well tolerated, and simple.

Abstract:
Current debate and research on outpatient commitment (OPC) has examined whether OPC is (1) clinically effective or (2) ethically acceptable, yet little research has sought the voices of consumers and mental health providers who are most intimately impacted by outpatient commitment. Our research was specifically interested in the perspective that consumers and providers had about OPC. Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine consumers on OPC orders and eight treatment providers associated with these consumers. Three major themes emerged. First, consumers voiced an ambiguous sense of personal control in the context of OPC orders. Second, consumers and mental health providers maintained inconsistent understandings of outpatient commitment. Finally, all consumers reported an improvement in their life after being on OPC. Based on these findings, we suggest methods by which mental health providers could facilitate a collaborative relationship with consumers despite working within a context of OPC orders.

Abstract:
The ways people cope with stressful and crisis-inducing episodes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have implications for quality of life. The current study aimed to analyse how coping strategies used by individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic varied according to sociodemographic characteristics. It also aimed to analyse how such strategies influence quality of life. Through an online survey, 505 adults living in Portugal reported on their sociodemographic characteristics, coping strategies, and perceptions of quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic period. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Portuguese versions of the Brief COPE and WHOQOL-BREF were used to assess the variables of interest. The main results suggest that middle-aged and more educated individuals, who were exposed to more risks at work, used more effective coping strategies. Men used more self-blaming coping strategies while women used more emotional support, religion, distraction, self-distraction, and behavioural withdrawal. Active coping was the strongest predictor of physical, psychological, and social domains of quality of life.Further studies are needed to examine the growth trajectory after the mitigation phase and the coping strategies used to promote mental health. Overall, advocating for active coping with current challenges promotes positive perceptions of quality of life amid the pandemic COVID-19.

As a consequence, Andricus cydoniae Giraud, 1859 became a junior synonym of A. conificus (Hartig, 1843). We provide illustrations and a diagnosis for adults and galls, observations on biology, and information on distribution. Moreover, as sexual galls of A. conificus cannot be distinguished from those of Andricus multiplicatus, a detailed comparison between sexual galls and adults of these two species is reported.

This article examines the career of Annie Mae Kenion who worked as a Jeanes teacher and supervisor of African American schools for more than 40 years. Strict racial segregation and disenfranchisement was the order of the day throughout most of her career, forcing her to negotiate the system gingerly in order to serve children. Kenion’s professional life illustrates an unyielding love of learning and the stark connection between education and the African American struggle against oppression.

Abstract:
Ithiel Town traveled twice to England and Europe, intent on studying "improvements in the taste and science of architecture" and "bridge engineering." His first tour, between October 1829 and July 1830, preceded the zenith of his career. It can be retraced in a series of largely unpublished letters addressed to his daughter, Etha, and his partner, Alexander Jackson Davis. The correspondence relates Town's immediate reactions and, hence, taste; his contact with the artistic community in London, including such fellow American visitors as S. F. B. Morse, whom he accompanied to Rome; and his purchase of books and prints, which he later housed in the fireproof villa he built in New Haven between 1834 and 1836. The major legacy of his study was a deepened appreciation of historical architecture and an evident objective not of imitating specific historical works but of enhancing the scale and sophistication of his own design. He was also inspired to seek improved educational facilities and status for the profession in the United States, participating in the foundation of the short-lived American Institution of Architects. He maintained links with leading figures in the British architectural scene, being among the earliest nonresident members elected to the newly founded Institute of British Architects in 1836. The value he attached to his first tour was confirmed when, in July 1843, Town again crossed the Atlantic to examine recent developments and design, mainly in England and Paris, the effect of which was unfortunately curtailed by his death some six months after his return to New York in December 1843.

Abstract:
Objective. The treatment protocol in the modern health care paradigm has shifted considerably towards enhancing the quality of life in the last decade. This is particularly important in cosmetic and elective treatments, and hence the interest in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) also has increased. OHRQoL always been measured by endogenous, functional, social, or psychological determinants. Self-esteem (SE) is one of the internal factors that affect the perception of malocclusion and hence OHRQoL before and after treatment. The purpose of this review is to assess whether there exists any correlation between the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life, Self-esteem (SE) in patients following orthodontic treatment. Methods. A literature search was confined to the English language using Medical Subject Heading terms (MeSH) in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Ovid® covering the period from January 1, 1951 to May 15, 2020. Search in Google Scholar, grey literature, and hand search on cross-references was performed to find additional data. The studies found to be suitable were selected based on the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of assessment and risk of bias for the included studies were evaluated independently by two invigilators utilizing “The Cochrane Collaboration’s tool for assessing the risk of bias” and “Modified version of the Newcastle Ottawa scale” for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and non-randomized trials respectively. Results. A total of 7688 studies were retrieved from all the sources. After screening all the titles and excluding the duplicates, 28 studies were finally included for text review, and all of them were fit for quality appraisal. The design of the final studies included comprised of 3 RCTs, 14 cohort studies, 9 cross-sectional studies, and 2 case-control studies. Conclusion. There is moderate evidence to show that fixed orthodontic treatment improves OHRQoL and SE in children. OHRQoL also increased in adolescents and adults. However, there is a weak correlation between SE and OHRQoL. More evidence-based studies are needed to analyze the relationship.

Abstract:
The rise in life expectancy is one of the main processes of social change in the 19th century. In the Netherlands, regional differences in life expectancy, and their development, were huge. Therefore, studies on average life expectancy or studies, which examine the whole of the Netherlands do not fully capture the differential determinants of this process. This study focuses on social, economic, and geographic differences in life expectancy in 19th-century Overijssel using the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN). Exploiting Cox regression, the influence of several factors on life expectancy are investigated. The article shows that birth cohort, urbanisation, and gender had an important relation with life expectancy in 19th-century Overijssel, while industrialisation, religion, and inheritance customs were not associated with age at death.

Abstract:
Present at the creation of American Studies, Daniel Aaron belongs on the short list of the academy's most learned and admired custodians of the nation's culture, for which President Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal in 2011. That would have been close to seven decades after the inauguration of Aaron's teaching career. A president of the American Studies Association (ASA), he held the rank of Victor S. Thomas Professor of English and American Literature at Harvard, where his service included chairing its Committee on American Civilization. The lengthy span of Aaron's life in the profession, punctuated by many other honors (including the ASA's Bode-Pearson Prize), has few, if any, counterparts in duration and distinction. Such was the arc of his career and concerns that, as this necrology is intended to suggest, the field of American Studies will not see his like again.

This work presents a historical analysis of death announcements ( N = 1,443) posted in the New York Times between 1912 and 2002. Announcements were coded according to two main categories: the genre of the announcement and the presence of emotion words. Four distinct main genres emerged: death notices, memorials, recognition postings by organizations, and recognition postings by nonorganizational parties (friends and family). The proportion of death notices declined steadily from 1912 to 2002, while the proportion of announcements paying tribute to the deceased increased. The announcements were also analyzed in terms of emotion words used, and it is argued that the increasing frequency of emotion words used in the death announcements reflects a progressive emotionalization and psychologization of grief and loss.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: In the first half of the 20th century, Icelandic doctors and teachers began documenting the health of school children, believing that physical measurements were important to monitoring physical development. The measurements could also be used for comparison in other areas and for reasearch. At the Reginonal Archives of Skagafjordur, rare data about the physique of children in Saudarkrokur in 1912–1953, measured by Jon Th. Bjornsson, is preserved. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Height, weight, grip strenght, thorax expansion and tidal volume were measured twice in 2018–2019 on 7–15-year-old children in elementary schools in Saudarkrokur and Varmahlid. These measurements were compared with similar measurements from 1912–1953. RESULTS: Children in 2018–2019 at ages 7–15 years were significantly taller, heavier, with greater thorax expansion and tidal volume than their peers in 1912–1953 (p<0,001–0,037). Children in 2018–2019 at ages 7–14 years had significantly higher body mass index than their peers in 1912–1953 (p<0,001–0,027). If adjusted for height and weight in thorax expansion and tidal volume measurements, similar results were found. Children in 2018–2019 had significantly less grip strength than their peers in 1912–1953 at ages 7 and 9–12-years when adjusted for height and weight (p<0,001–0,025). There was significant development in the physique of children over the years 1912–1953 in most measurements and age groups (p<0,001–0,040). CONCLUSIONS: A significant increase in measured factors in 2018–2019 compared to 1912–1953 can possibly be attributed to improved quality of life.

The purpose of this study was to understand the adverse consequences of driving reduction or cessation among elderly adults. A comprehensive literature search was conducted for studies that ( a) included information on driving by an elderly population, ( b) included results from a qualitative or quantitative (or both) study of the elderly and driving cessation, and ( c) provided information to evaluate consequences surrounding driving reduction or cessation. The selected subjects of the studies included men and women over the age of 55 years. Driving reduction or cessation is associated with a number of adverse consequences, including reduced activity out of the home and decreased life satisfaction. However, determining causality of the associations is difficult because of unidentified third variables (such as health). Understanding the adverse consequences will aid researchers and policy makers to develop better strategies to help people anticipate and prepare for reduced driving and to develop and improve transportation alternatives.

Abstract:
All creative people, whose names we remember, are united by such a character trait as passion. And the field of creativity is not so important here — both in art, and in technical sciences, and in medicine, to achieve a result, complete immersion in research, some kind of obsession is necessary. Robert Koch (1843-1910) — a great researcher, a German physician, microbiologist and hygienist, proved by his own example that a clear goal, fortitude and efficiency overcome all unfavorable circumstances. This work examined the life and work of Robert Koch over a significant period of time — from graduation to the discovery of tuberculin, its announcement as a treatment for tuberculosis and the recognition of the fallacy of this statement. From the point of view of the authors of the work, this period of time is of great interest. We see Robert Koch — a scientist with extraordinary abilities and a unique combination of character traits. Diligence and the highest ability to work, exactingness towards himself, a clear organization of work, the ability not to stop in the face of difficulties — predetermined the success of his research.

Abstract:
Abstract The women’s fashion magazine Listok dlia svetskikh liudei (1839–1845) printed satirical lithographs by the Russo-Baltic artist Vasilii Fedorovich Timm in 1843–1844, providing an important forum for merging the physiological sketch with the fashion press. Listok presented Timm with a serialized format, whereby his satirical cartoons adapted the physiological sketch to a largely female readership, commenting on courtship, relationships, male vices, as well as social ills, urban life, and the state of journalism in the 1840s. Listok offered visual commentary on issues important to female readers as well as broader observations of Petersburg life and Russian society.

Abstract:
The current literature on international joint ventures pays considerable attention to why joint ventures are established or why they are dissolved, but we lack studies that give insight into their dynamic development. The aim of this article is to investigate the evolution of an international joint venture over time. We confront some of the theoretical insights developed during the last decades with the dramatic history of the aluminum producer Det Norske Nitridaktieselskap (DNN). The company was established shortly beforeWorld War I and was finally disbanded over seventy years later. For most of this time, DNN was an international joint venture with shifting ownership configurations. This gives us the possibility not only to discuss the motivation for why the company was established or why it was dissolved, but also to study the mid-life of the company. What was DNN's role within the general corporate strategies of the owners? Did this role change over time?
