Abstract:
Surgical antisepsis and asepsis established the standard of using scientific evidence to determine surgical practice. The microbiological discoveries of Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) were the inspiration for Joseph Lister's (1827–1912) use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic on surgical wounds. German and Swiss surgeons invented aseptic surgical practice based on the studies of Robert Koch (1843–1910), a life-saving revolution in medicine as profound as anesthesia. Together they changed human history, sparing millions the horrors of hospital gangrene and making the entire body accessible to surgical intervention. In the United States, surgeons followed the lead of their brethren across the Atlantic. Americans, characteristically pragmatic, naturally resisted what they saw as unnecessary complexity in Listerism. Once they accepted germ theory, the undeniable scientific evidence led to the rapid acceptance of asepsis. Among the wide-ranging effects of this transition in practice were the creation of the current model of the academic department of surgery and the modern concept of surgical professionalism.

Abstract:
The Parliamentary Act of 1843 that eradicated the duopoly of Covent Garden and Drury Lane affected London taverns as well as theatres. To skirt the ban on drama, minor theatres had long interpolated musical interludes into any sort of play, thus naturalizing indoors a variety format more common to the fairground or circus. The growing taste for miscellaneous entertainment was also served by tavern saloons, where variety bills supplemented alcoholic conviviality. The Act of 1843, amending the licensing act of 1737, merely recognized this fact of life and extended a welcoming hand to these and other performance spaces. All places of entertainment holding a “burletta license” might stage plays, provided that smoking and the sale of spirituous beverages were banned from the premises.

Abstract:
Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a severe pathology that greatly affects the quality of life, and increases morbidity and mortality of patients owing to the augmentation of cardiovascular events. Treatment of GHD is challenging, mainly because there is no specific characteristic sign or symptom that can be used to make a clear diagnosis. There is need for an unequivocal diagnosis of GHD to avoid unnecessary treatment with GH, because the available provocative tests (GH stimulation tests) are not specific and sensitive enough, and are contraindicated in some patients. Ghrelin is an endogenous peptide that stimulates GH secretion by interacting with a G-protein-coupled receptor named ghrelin receptor (GH secretagogue receptor 1a, GHS-R1a). Given this, a GH stimulation test using ghrelin or its analogues appears to be attractive. In this paper, a modified tripeptide first named JMV-1843 in the laboratory is briefly presented. It is potent and selective in stimulating the release of GH and is orally active. It has been recently commercialised for the diagnosis of adult GH deficiency under the tradename Macrilen. The test using this compound appears to be reliable, well tolerated, and simple.

Abstract:
Current debate and research on outpatient commitment (OPC) has examined whether OPC is (1) clinically effective or (2) ethically acceptable, yet little research has sought the voices of consumers and mental health providers who are most intimately impacted by outpatient commitment. Our research was specifically interested in the perspective that consumers and providers had about OPC. Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine consumers on OPC orders and eight treatment providers associated with these consumers. Three major themes emerged. First, consumers voiced an ambiguous sense of personal control in the context of OPC orders. Second, consumers and mental health providers maintained inconsistent understandings of outpatient commitment. Finally, all consumers reported an improvement in their life after being on OPC. Based on these findings, we suggest methods by which mental health providers could facilitate a collaborative relationship with consumers despite working within a context of OPC orders.

Abstract:
The ways people cope with stressful and crisis-inducing episodes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have implications for quality of life. The current study aimed to analyse how coping strategies used by individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic varied according to sociodemographic characteristics. It also aimed to analyse how such strategies influence quality of life. Through an online survey, 505 adults living in Portugal reported on their sociodemographic characteristics, coping strategies, and perceptions of quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic period. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Portuguese versions of the Brief COPE and WHOQOL-BREF were used to assess the variables of interest. The main results suggest that middle-aged and more educated individuals, who were exposed to more risks at work, used more effective coping strategies. Men used more self-blaming coping strategies while women used more emotional support, religion, distraction, self-distraction, and behavioural withdrawal. Active coping was the strongest predictor of physical, psychological, and social domains of quality of life.Further studies are needed to examine the growth trajectory after the mitigation phase and the coping strategies used to promote mental health. Overall, advocating for active coping with current challenges promotes positive perceptions of quality of life amid the pandemic COVID-19.

We demonstrated the life cycle closure of Cynips conifica Hartig, 1843 (presently Andricus conificus), previously supposed on the basis of molecular data, and the identity of the sexual generation, through laboratory experiments. As a consequence, Andricus cydoniae Giraud, 1859 became a junior synonym of A. conificus (Hartig, 1843). We provide illustrations and a diagnosis for adults and galls, observations on biology, and information on distribution. Moreover, as sexual galls of A. conificus cannot be distinguished from those of Andricus multiplicatus, a detailed comparison between sexual galls and adults of these two species is reported.

Monteith, William. "Heart and struggle : life in Nakasero market 1912-2015." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2016. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/61507/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis generates an account of life in a marketplace in Kampala, Uganda, through an ethnographic engagement with its vendors, traders, hawkers, transporters and service providers. It traces the development of Nakasero market from a colonial facility to a dense assemblage of products, peoples and practices from across Uganda and the broader region. Faced with the challenge of getting along amid ongoing processes of social, economic and political change, I argue that people in the market invest considerable time and energy in relationships and associations, drawing together ideas and practices from institutions with long histories in Kampala and Buganda. Nakasero market has been witness to many of the political and economic disturbances of postcolonial Uganda: from the Asian expulsion and the magendo (black market) of the 1970s, to the structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) and privatisation initiatives of the 1990s. However, rather than being passive recipients of these events, people in the market have engaged in collective subjective practices to reinterpret and remake them, producing alternative visions of social and moral prosperity. The findings of the thesis inform two separate literatures. First, they challenge studies of change in urban African settings conducted under the metanarratives of ‘crisis’ and ‘informality’, which tend to conceal the multiplicity of forms through which life in the city is articulated and expressed. Second, they suggest the need for post-structural accounts of African cities to consider the enduring role of cultural idioms, such as that of ‘heart’ (omutima), in shaping the actions and perspectives of urban African inhabitants.

Whaley, Susan Jane. "Still life : the life of things in the fiction of Patrick White." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27562.

Full text
Abstract:
"Still Life" argues that Patrick White's fiction reveals objects in surprising, unexpected attitudes so as to challenge the process by which the mind usually connects with the world around it. In particular, White's novels disrupt readers' tacit assumptions about the lethargic nature of substance; this thesis traces how his fiction reaches beyond familiar linguistic and stylistic forms in order to reinvent humanity's generally passive perception of reality. The first chapter outlines the historical context of ideas about the "object," tracing their development from the Bible through literary movements such as romanticism, symbolism, surrealism and modernism. Further, the chapter considers the nature of language and the relation of object to word in order to distinguish between the usual symbolic use made of objects in literature and White's treatment of things as discrete, palpable entities. The second chapter focuses on White's first three published novels—Happy Valley (1939), The Living and the Dead (1941) and The Aunt's Story (1948)--as steps in his novelistic growth. Chapters Three, Four and Five examine respectively The Tree of Man (1955), The Solid Mandala (1966) and The Eye of the Storm (1973); these novels represent successive stages of White's career and exemplify his different formal and stylistic techniques. White's innovations demand a new manner of reading; therefore, each novel is discussed in terms of objects which reflect the shapes of the works themselves: "tree" defines the structure and style of Tree of Man "house" inspires Solid Mandala and "body" shapes Eye of the Storm. Reading White's novels in terms of structural analogues not only illuminates his methodology, but also clarifies his distinction between objective and subjective ways of understanding the world. Further, these chapters also refute critics' arguments that White's objects are merely victims of his overambitious use of personification and pathetic fallacy, or that they are the result of his dabbling in mysticism. "Still Life" concludes by showing how Patrick White's novels sequentially break down assumptions about reality and appearance until the reality of language itself falters. The author restores mystery to things by relocating the possibility of the extraordinary within the narrow, prescribed confines of the ordinary. White succeeds in changing readers' notions about the nature of reality by disrupting the habitual process by which they apprehend the world of things.

Tekeli, Gokce. "WHERE WE BELONG: SPATIAL IMAGINING IN AMERICAN WOMEN’S LIFE NARRATIVES, 1859-1912." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/86.

Full text
Abstract:
Where We Belong: Spatial Imagining in American Women’s Life Narratives, 1859-1912, studies three marginalized and disadvantaged American women’s self-life narratives during a transitional period in American history. In this dissertation, I am taking an interdisciplinary approach. Where We Belong borrows from social geography, new materialism, and autobiography studies in order to complicate critical discussions of women’s space and place in nineteenth-century women’s self-life narratives. Each chapter of Where We Belong presents a case study with the goal to provide a broader understanding of women’s strategies of belonging due to and despite their spatial exclusions. The overarching emphasis in each chapter remains on the female body’s spatial movement. Exploring Eliza Potter’s A Hairdresser’s Experience in High Life (1859), Elizabeth Keckley’s Behind the Scenes; Or Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House (1868), and Mary Antin’s The Promised Land (1912), I claim that material spaces and these women’s corporeal bodies are inseparable. The three cases I present in this project exemplify how marginal women develop strategies of belonging in spaces from which they have been excluded. These women demonstrate ways of belonging (where they are assumed not to) enacted by self-life narratives. Belonging is not a passive way of being: it is activism that disrupts strict categories and definitions, such as blackness, in American literary scholarship. It contains paradoxes of acquiescence and self-declaration.

Abstract:
The Trans-Australian railway crossed the continent from east to west. It was built in 1912 to 1917 and the section from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie was administered by the Commonwealth Government. This study focuses on the workers and their families who were involved in the construction and operation of the transline and lived in railway settlements and fettlers' camps from 1912-1975. Although these people are now part of Australian folklore, little is known of what life was like for them outside of their work environment. This study looks at family life, social activities, welfare and medical services, schools and the teachers, as well as children's leisure activities and how women coped while providing for their families in an isolated environment. It indicates that life for the fettlers in small communities of six to eight families was physically hard and living conditions primitive. They had very few possessions because they had to keep moving their camps to keep up with the progress of the line. Life was lonely and isolated with only their fellow residents for company and support. Completion of the line reduced the number of workers needed, and the railways built permanent accommodation in the remaining camps. The camps were well run and law abiding, and residents learnt to ignore minor problems or disagreements in order to maintain good relations with their neighbours. The much larger locomotive settlements of Cook, Tarcoola, Rawlinna and Zanthus became centres for all transline employees, where the railways helped residents build hospitals and schools, and constructed provision stores to cater for the settlements and the camps along the line. Employees who could tolerate the heat and the duststorms, had a secure lifestyle where the railways provided housing, a credit system for household supplies and food if needed, and provided medical, welfare and education facilities for its workers. Most ex-residents interviewed had endured a hard working environment, but they believed the railways had looked after them well. Their most pleasant memories were of the companionship and the support of their fellow workers during their years on the transline. Illness or misfortune were rarely remembered as they looked back on 'a good life'. However, for some workers life was not good, where alcoholism and depression could cause misery in a family not able to cope with the environment.

Abstract:
Considering personal literature as a distinct literary genre that reveals and preserves their authors' identity and voice, and that demands its own parameters for literary analysis, this study investigates two nineteenth century Mormon women's life writings: Mary Jane Mount Tanner's journals and Patience Loader Rozsa Archer's autobiography, taking into account their value as historical documents, which not only demonstrate an effective way to access the past, but also have already proven to be fundamental for the reconstruction of the Mormon experience and preservation and conveyance of its group identity and collective memory. Attempting at understanding how literature, history and memory merge, this study presentes the development of the comprehension of memory as a social phenomenon and summarizes the contributions of important thinkers like Halbwachs, Le Goff, Connerton and Hobsbawn. It also provides an outline of the history of the United States in the nineteenth century to contextualize the historical and social frames in which those texts are inserted.

Abstract:
This thesis studies three novels of the Turkish writer Halide Edib (1884-1964) written between 1908 and 1912, and examines this historical period and her life during it. The thesis deals with the 1908 Constitutional Revolution, the '31 March Incident' and the Turkist movement, as reflected in her novels, as well as independently through secondary sources. The examination of Raik'in Annesi (1980) reveals Edib's ideas on 'ideal womanhood,' morality and divorce. Seviyye Talib (1990) includes her views on the Constitutional Revolution, women's modernisation and the '31 March Incident.' The study of Yeni Turan (1912) reveals much about Turkism, or Turanism, and its political opponent in the novel, Ottomanism. From these novels Edib's main ideas are brought out and examined. Among the recurrent themes analysed are her strong admiration for the Angle-Saxon culture, her understanding of Westernisation, her approach to Islam, and her views on women and family.

Coombes, Candice Anne. "Entomopathogenic fungi for control of soil-borne life stages of false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) (1912) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002057.

Full text
Abstract:
False codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta is an extremely important pest of citrus in South Africa and with the shift away from the use of chemicals, alternate control options are needed. One avenue of control which has only recently been investigated against the soil-borne life stages of FCM is the use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF). In 2009, 12 entomopathogenic fungal isolates collected from South African citrus orchards showed good control potential during laboratory conducted bioassays. The aim of this study was to further analyse the potential of these isolates through concentration-dose and exposure-time response bioassays. After initial re-screening, concentration-dose response and exposure-time response sandconidial bioassays, three isolates were identified as exhibiting the greatest control potential against FCM in soil, Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae (G 11 3 L6 and FCM Ar 23 B3) and Beauveria bassiana (G Ar 17 B3). Percentage mycosis was found to be directly related to fungal concentration as well as the amount of time FCM 5th instar larvae were exposed to the fungal conidia. LC50 values for the three isolates were not greater than 1.92 x 10⁶ conidia.ml⁻ₑ and at the LC₅₀, FCM 5th instar larvae would need to be exposed to the fungus for a maximum of 13 days to ensure a high mortality level. These isolates along with two commercially available EPF products were subjected to field persistence trials whereby net bags filled with a mixture of autoclaved sand and formulated fungal product were buried in an Eastern Cape citrus orchard. The viability of each isolate was measured on a monthly basis for a period of six months. All isolates were capable of persisting in the soil for six months with the collected isolates persisting far better than the commercially used isolates. Two of the isolates, G 11 3 L6 and G Ar 17 B3, were subjected to small scale laboratory application trials. Two formulations were investigated at two concentrations. For each isolate, each formulation and each concentration, FCM 5th instar larvae were applied and allowed to burrow into the soil to pupate before fungal application or after fungal application. Contact between fungi and FCM host is essential as, in contrast to pre-larval treatments, percentage mortality in post-larval treatments was low for both formulations and both isolates. For isolate G Ar 17 B3, a conidial suspension applied as a spray at a concentration of 1 x 10⁷ conidia.ml⁻ₑ obtained the highest percentage mortality (80 %). For isolate G 11 3 L6 however, both formulations performed equally well at a high, 1 x10⁷ conidia.ml⁻ₑ concentration (conidial suspension: 60 %; granular: 65 %) The results obtained thus far are promising for the control of FCM in citrus, but if these EPFs are to successfully integrate into current FCM control practices more research, some of which is discussed, is essential

Abstract:
According to the World Health Organization, social participation refers to "The individualss engagement in life situations in relation to their health conditions, body functions and structures, activities and contextual factors." Stroke is the major cause of disability and may affect participation in meaningful occupations and life satisfaction. The LIFE-H 3.1 assesses social participation through questions reagrding performance or current activities, the type of required assistance, and the individuals satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to cross-culturally adapt this instrument to the Brazilian-Portuguese language and investigate its measurement properties. The LIFE-H 3.1 was translated and adapted to Portuguese-Brazil, following standardized procedures and was subjected to test-retest reliability analyses. The measurement properties of the adapted version were evaluated using Rasch analyses with 90 community-dwelling chronic stroke subjects. The LIFE-H 3.1- Brazil showed adequate test-retest reliability (ICC=0.74-0.98) and stability of both, item calibration (ICC=0.93) and subjectss measures (ICC=0.97). It allowed the discrimination of subjects into six levels of social participation and the items into eightl levels of difficulty. Of the 77 items, four (5.2%) did not fit into the statistical model. As expected, the analyses supported the multidimensional nature of instruments aimed to measure social participation and showed evidence of construct validity. However, the scoring criteria of the LIFE-H 3.1 were not always fully utilized, suggesting that they could be simplified. The findings provided evidence of the clinical applicability of the LIFE-H 3.1-Brazil with chronic stroke subjects, since it may be applied in individuals with various levels of social participation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The presented contribution analyses – in the context of Jan Zouhar’s research scope and also on the background of the professional interests of the immortalized František Kautman (1927–2016) – the ‘philosophy’ of T. G. Masaryk’s (1850–1937) work. At the beginning, there are new publications on his alleged origin from the family of the Austro-Hungarian monarch, further their fictionalization, the investigation of his late sexual life and, last but not least, the flow of his juvenile correspondence with Zdenka Šemberová (1841–1912). For her, this communication was full of erotic and intellectual hopes which were not fulfilled and led to her lifelong loneliness and resignation, especially after the death of her father Alois Vojtěch Šembera (1807–1882), professor of Vienna Slavonic studies, one of the first opponents of the medieval authenticity of the legendary Czech Manuscripts, all of this on the background of the life of the university and Czech Vienna, where they both lived, and the adjacent Moravia. Masaryk, with his weak knowledge of standard Czech, Šemberová, at that time already a mature lady, record in their correspondence the course of their lives, their opinions, readings, and document their intellectual maturing. Their correspondence represents evidence of the lives of both: Masaryk was gradually becoming a scholar and mainly a politician, and understood their correspondence, from which Zdenka expected also an amorous fulfilment, as a mere practical exercise in stylistics and a confrontation of opinions. Their correspondence throws a new, not always favourable light on the youth of the future Czechoslovak president. Already there, the elementary features of his personality were taking their shapes.

Abstract:
The historical legacy of the TITANIC defies a brief manuscript of 20- plus pages. Much better, and more detailed work has been done to give the subject a “modern” context, notably by the United States Coast Guard in the Summer 2012 issue of Proceedings of the Marine Safety and Security Council, vol.69, no. 2, from which the following remarks draw heavily. The night of April 14, 1912 – the famous “night to remember,” chosen by Walter Lord as the title of his excellent history – presents us with many questions that will probably never be answered. Most of these are technical: the “what ifs” that, in one form or another, haunt us after, but usually not before, a disaster at sea. The importance of safety at sea is shown by the pictures available since 1985, showing the broken fragments of wreckage lying on the ocean floor south of Cape Race. Since the wreckage was located, we can see the pairs of empty shoes and boots that mark where human remains once lay. The TITANIC facts are familiar: at 11:40 P.M. on April 14, 1912, she collided with an iceberg. Two hours and 40 minutes later, the pride of the White Star Line began her two-mile plunge to the bottom of the North Atlantic. Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, only 710 survived. While there have been sea disasters that produced greater loss of life, the sinking of TITANIC is probably the most famous and far-reaching maritime disaster in history. While the loss of TITANIC has been described as “perhaps the most documented and least commonly understood marine casualty in maritime history”, a positive result of the TITANIC disaster, and of course many other tragedies at sea that have occurred since, has been to establish a formal protocol of goals and procedures for analysis and investigation. These goals, from the point of view of the investigator/flag state, other governments, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and other regulators, is the identification of unsafe conditions, in order to identify them in advance of future disasters. Today, responsible regimes charged with administration of the safety of life at sea are said to follow a philosophy of prevention first and, then, response. The 1985 discovery of the wreck of the TITANIC sparked a new round of forensic investigation. The bow section was found largely intact with the stern section in hundreds of pieces approximately 2,000 feet away. The realization that TITANIC’s hull had broken at some point during the sinking added a new understanding of the already famous disaster. The discovery of the wreck also provided new forensic evidence in the form of recovered artifacts and detailed surveys. It was these new clues and advances in computer-driven engineering tools that gave rise to a revision of previously held beliefs. The significance of the TITANIC, and the events that led to such a large loss of life, remain with us today.

Abstract:
Computer Aided Design and Finite Element Analysis packages that have been developed are capable of providing a relatively accurate fatigue life prediction. These software packages have made nonlinear analysis more reliable in forecasting a component’s fatigue life. A safe-life (in which the components are safe from failure during the estimated service life) can be predicted during the design process. The autofrettage technique has long been applied in high-pressure industries in order to extend the components’ life. The critical parameters that must be understood during a fatigue life analysis are material properties, including cyclic loading properties and stress excursion during the service cycle. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element analysis of an autofrettaged manifold is presented. This assessment investigated an ANSI 316 stainless steel Tee-fitting, which was exposed to different cyclical loading conditions (two autofrettage conditions at a normal operation level). This was done in order to compare finite element analysis results to actual laboratory experimental results.

Abstract:
Abstract As part of an evaluation of plastic bead blasting as a means of removing paint from aircraft, fatigue testing was performed on bead blasted material. Typical military aircraft finishes were removed from 0.063 inch (1.6 mm) thick clad aluminum, corrosion resistant steel, and Ti-6Al-4V. Constant amplitude fatigue specimens were then machined from these samples and tested. Results were compared to control samples which had not been bead blasted. Fatigue life of corrosion resistant steel and clad aluminum were unaffected by bead blasting. The bead blasted Ti-6Al-4V samples, however, exhibited a significant decrease in fatigue life when compared to the control samples. Laboratory evaluation of the bead blasted Ti-6Al-4V samples included binocular and scanning electron microscopic evaluation, energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX), metallography, and mechanical evaluation of surface roughness. It was determined that the decrease in fatigue life exhibited by the bead blasted samples was caused by improper machining not bead blasting.

Abstract:
Abstract Due to relatively high cost of the tooling in closed die forging the increasing of tool life is vitally important. The dies can failure due to cracks caused by overloading, low cycle fatigue or abrasive wear. On the other hand, the die deflection can cause deterioration of the forged part shape. The paper presents the ways for increasing of tool life and product accuracy by means of implementation of simulation. It can be done by modification of die design that reduces stress concentration in fillets or by using assembly dies that have splits in critical areas in combination with shrink rings and inserts. Finite element simulation allows to analyze the effectiveness of different variants of die design and to select the most effective ones in terms of tooling cost. Simulation also generates profiled shape of the die that compensates elastic deformation of tooling set and provides precise geometrical accuracy of a forged part.

As plataformas cientificas utilizadas foram o Google Acadêmico (Scholar), The Scientific Eletronic Library Online) e Pubmed®, totalizando 6 artigos.

Abstract In industry 4.0, to increase flexibility of a robotic arm system, high-DOFs (degrees of freedom) robotic arm system is used for different applications. A traditional way of dealing with high-DOFs configuration control is to utilize kinesthetic teaching in Cartesian space by guiding the robot’s end-effector to targets. Usually, the teaching process takes a long time, and the configuration of the robotic arm makes them only workable for specific application needs. This research presents a novel mechanical design of 7-DOFs humanoid robotic arm and an algorithm to generate human-like motions for the anthropometric robotic arm to solve the problem. Because the humanoid robotic arm exists one redundant DOF, in this paper, this extra DOF is utilized to optimize the human-like motion in performing tasks with minimum angle variance, adjusting force transmission with manipulability ellipsoids, and avoiding obstacles in the environment. Finally, a 7-DOFs humanoid robotic arm is designed and used in a task which is typically performed by bartenders, namely, pouring wine into the glass.

Abstract:
The Budello tower is located on a slight promontory from which it dominates the entire bay of Teulada and the towers of Sant’Isidoro, Pixinni, Malfatano and Porto Scudo. The tower, built in 1601 with irregular ashlars of local stones (mainly of magmatic-intrusive origin), has a truncated cone shape, an external diameter of 10,2 m and a height of 11,80 m. Inside it consists of a single room, with a domed vault and a central pillar, equipped with a embrasure, a fireplace, a trap door in the cistern, and a staircase, from which the square of arms was accessed. It was a torre de armas garrisoned by: 1 commander (in 1603), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1767), 1 artilleryman and 3 soldiers (1801), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1812). Although it underwent several restorations, documented as early as the years 1617-1619, the tower remained generally in good condition until the period 1763-1784, in which new restoration works were carried out including the closure of the parade ground with a classic parapet with gunboats and battlements. Other restoration works are carried out in 1808, 1819 and 1840. The tower remained in operation until 1843. Like all the other coastal fortifications, it was then definitively demilitarized with the Regio Decreto of 25 April 1867. Specific objectives of the research are the petrographic and physical-mechanical analysis of the stones and ancient mortars used in the construction of the tower, the structural analysis of the building and related geometric-constructive characteristics. The final intention is to understand the decay processes taking place on the tower both in terms of materials and static-structural aspects, and to envisage possible restoration interventions to be implemented aimed at its conservation.

Abstract:
The Cumberland Bone Cave is a public visitation stop along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail renowned for its unique fossil resources that help reconstruct Appalachian middle Pleistocene life in the mid-Atlantic region of North America. This site is gated for safety and to prevent unwanted exploration and damage. Approximately 163 taxa of fossil plant and animals have been collected from Cumberland Bone Cave since 1912. Most of the fossils that have been published pertain to mammals, including many extinct or locally extirpated genera and species. Though the early excavations made by the Smithsonian Institution between 1912 and 1915 are the best known of the work at Cumberland Bone Cave, over many decades multiple institutions and paleontologists have collected and studied the fossil resources from this site up until 2012. Today, fossils from Cumberland Bone Cave are housed at various museum collections, including public displays at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. and the Allegany Museum in Cumberland, Maryland. This report summarizes the geology, fossil resources, and the history of excavation and research for Potomac Heritage Trail’s Cumberland Bone Cave.
