Abstract:
Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses and new analyses reported here demonstrate that the genus Claravis is not monophyletic and comprises two lineages, one with the species pretiosa Ferrari-Pérez, 1886 (Blue Ground-dove), and the other with two species: geoffroyi Temminck, 1811 (Purple-winged Ground-dove) and mondetoura Bonaparte, 1856 (Maroon-chested Ground-dove). Because the generic name Claravis is typified by C. pretiosa (Ferrari-Pérez, 1886), a new genus, Paraclaravis gen. nov., is described for geoffroyi Temminck, 1811 and mondetoura Bonaparte, 1856.

Abstract:
Autorka podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji biografii Katarzyny Fröhlich (1811–1886), absolwentki warszawskiej szkoły baletowej, w Teatrze Wielkim szlifującej talent pod okiem Julii Mierzyńskiej. Wymienia spektakle z udziałem tancerki, w tym w partiach solowych, przywołuje pochlebne opinie prasowe o „solo mazurze” z Wesela polskiego w Ojcowie.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
When she was only 22 years old, Katherine Sophia Baily published, anonymously, a pocketable account of the native flora of Ireland. While her name was not on the title-page, it was evidently not a secret and was soon revealed in several Irish periodicals. The following year, 1834, Miss Baily also published two articles on arboriculture in Ireland, but nothing else, as far as can be ascertained. She was the first woman admitted to the Botanical Society of Edinburgh shortly after its founding in 1836, and was the first woman to put together a flora (preceding Mary Kirby's 1850 Flora of Leicestershire). Little has been published about Katherine Baily (1811–1886) apart from general entries in standard biographical dictionaries and bibliographies. Common to most of these is the statement that she was “of Newbury, Berkshire”, but that is not confirmed by details given in a genealogical account of the Baily family of Berkshire. Also unstated is the fact that she belonged to the Roman Catholic church, causing one Irish reviewer to remark that she was “a young lady, a native, and …, we understand, a member of that anti-botanical church”. In 1838 Katherine married the Irish scientist Robert John Kane, and when he was knighted in 1846 she became Lady Kane. Conferva kaneana McCalla was intended to honour her.

Abstract:
Osmia (Allosmia) and O. (Neosmia) are two closely related Palaearctic osmiine bee subgenera (Megachilidae, Megachilinae, Osmiini) comprising eleven and ten species, respectively. Analysis of female pollen loads revealed that the representatives of O. (Allosmia) and O. (Neosmia) are pollen generalists collecting pollen on up to 13 and 17 plant families, respectively. The species of both subgenera exclusively nest in empty snail shells and use chewed leaves as main nest building material, often in combination with fragments of mollusc shells and densely packed small particles, such as small stones, earth crumbs or plant fibers, which are used to barricade the nests. The taxonomic revision of the two subgenera revealed the existence of two undescribed species, O. (Allosmia) gemina spec. nov. from the southern Levant and O. (Neosmia) nigrocalcaribus spec. nov. from the Maghreb. Osmia fossoria Pérez, 1890 syn. nov. and O. decorata Morawitz, 1886 syn. nov. are newly synonymized with O. (Allosmia) lhotelleriei Pérez, 1887 and O. (Allosmia) melanura Morawitz, 1871, respectively, whereas the former synonymization of O. (Neosmia) rosea Friese, 1920 with O. scutispina Gribodo, 1894 is rejected. Osmia (Neosmia) purpurata Ducke, 1899 is regarded as a nomen dubium. Osmia (Allosmia) soror Pérez, 1896 and O. (Neosmia) secunda Peters, 1977 are treated as species rather than as subspecies of O. rufohirta Latreille, 1811 and O. tingitana Benoist, 1969, respectively, due to clear morphological gaps and partly sympatric occurrence. Identification keys for all species of the two subgenera are given.

Abstract:
The U.S. Constitution removed real and monetary trade barriers between the states. By contrast, these states when they were British colonies exercised considerable real and monetary sovereignty over their borders. Purchasing power parity is used to measure how much economic integration between the states was gained in the decades after the Constitution's adoption compared with what existed among the same locations during the late colonial period. Using this measure, the short-run effect of the Constitution on economic integration was minimal. This may have been because the Constitution did not eliminate all the institutional barriers to interstate trade before 1812.“No idea is more firmly planted in American history than the idea that one of the most difficult problems during the Confederation was that of barriers to trade between state and state. There had been such barriers in colonial times …”Merrill Jensen1“The ‘secret’ of American economic growth, English legal scholar Sir Henry Maine wrote in 1886, lay in ‘the [constitutional] prohibition against levying duties on commodities passing from State to State … . It secures to the producer the command of a free market over an enormous territory of vast natural wealth …’”Charles W. McCurdy2

Abstract:
Domestic cats and humans are favorite final hosts for some hepatic trematodes of Opisthorchiidae. The present study examined the sequence variation in the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region, including the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) and the 5.8S gene, of two human opisthorchiid species Clonorchis sinensis (Cobbold, 1875) Looss, 1907 and Opisthorchis viverrini (Poirier, 1886) Stiles & Hassal, 1896, in cats sampled in Northern Vietnam. The length of 30 partial ITS1‒5.8S rDNA sequences of C. sinensis from different hosts and localities varied from 761 to 766 bp. The results showed completely identity for all investigated 5.8S rDNA sequences of C. sinensis. In contrast, the variations were revealed in the complete ITS1 sequences of C. sinensis. Three polymorphic sites, indel and new sites with intragenomic polymorphism were detected. The length of the complete ITS1 rDNA region ranged from 656 to 661 bp. There are no substitutions downstream of the 5 bp insertion, and the different ratio of nucleotide in polymorphic sites with presence/absence of insertion leads to the existence of 6 genotypes in the investigated samples. The major genotype was obtained in 70% of sequences, other genotypes were presented by 1, 2 or 3 sequences. Nucleotide diversity in whole sample of C. sinensis was 0.00122 ± 0.00073. Partial sequences of ITS1‒5.8S rDNA of O. viverrini were 745 bp in length, and no difference was observed. Phylogenetic analyses by neighbor joining phylogram inferred from ITS1‒5.8S rDNA of 3 sequences of O. viverrini and 30 sequences of C. sinensis were formed two separately monophyletic clades.

Abstract:
AbstractSeismicity in the New Madrid seismic zone and the rest of stable North America remains controversial. Some workers view present‐day earthquakes there as long‐lived aftershocks; others view them as background seismicity concentrated in lithospheric weak zones. Separating long‐lived aftershocks from background seismicity, however, is challenging. Here, we used the nearest‐neighbor (NN) method to identify long‐lived aftershocks. The NN method calculates the distances between pairs of earthquakes in a space‐time‐magnitude domain. If the distances are too close to be expected for independent background events that follow the Gutenberg‐Richter law and Poisson distribution, the pairs are taken as clustered events (i.e., the later one in a pair is an aftershock of the earlier one). Our results suggest that, depending on the size and location of the 1811–1812 New Madrid mainshocks, 10.7%–65.0% of the M ≥ 2.5 earthquakes in the New Marid region between 1980 and 2016 may be long‐lived aftershocks. Similarly, considerable present‐day earthquakes in South Carolina are long‐lived aftershocks of the 1886 Charleston earthquake, but the contemporary seismicity in Charlevoix, Québec is predominately background seismicity. These results suggest that present‐day seismicity in stable North America, and perhaps other stable continents, includes both background seismicity and long‐lived aftershocks. Distinguishing aftershocks from background seismicity can be important for hazard assessment.
