Abstract:
In England, realism was formed very quickly, because it appeared immediately after the Enlightenment, and its formation occurred almost simultaneously with the development of Romanticism, which did not hinder the success of the new literary movement. The peculiarity of English literature is that in it romanticism and realism coexisted and enriched each other. Examples include the works of two writers, Elizabeth Gaskell and Charlotte Bronte. However, the discovery and confirmation of realism in English literature is primarily associated with the legacy of Charles Dickens (1812-1870) and William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863). The works of Charles Dickens differ not only in the strengthening of the real social moment, but also in the previous realist literature. Dickens has a profoundly negative effect on bourgeois reality. Key words: England, realism, literary trend, bourgeois society, utopia, unjust life, artistic description

Abstract:
The article concerns costs borne by parties to court cases in the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland (until the unification of the Polish judiciary with the Russian system in the 1870s). Litigation costs included: court fees, attorneys’ and experts’ fees, travel expenses incurred by the parties and other persons whose appearance was necessary, daily allowances for the parties, witnesses and court officers, and costs of correspondence (delivered by court officers). The most important costs were the court fees, which were paid using stamped paper. The author focused on the content of three acts which comprehensively regulated the collection of stamp duty (acts of 1809, 1811 and 1863). In property litigations, the amount of stamp duty depended on the value of the disputed subject matter, while it had a regressive character (the bigger the claim, the lower the fees). However, in cases concerning non-financial claims, the fee depended on the affluence of the parties or was set as a lump sum.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Contribution to knowledge of the butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) of north-eastern Poland with a description of a new tineid species from the genus Monopis Hübner, 1825 This work contains faunistic data on the occurrence of 677 butterfly and moth species found during 2000-2008 in north-eastern Poland (Podlasie Province). The species Monopis fenestratella (Heyden, 1863), Amphisbatis elsae Svensson, 1982, Coleophora ptarmicia Walsingham, 1910 and Epermenia falciformis (Haworth, 1828) were found in Poland for the first time. Recent data are provided for five other species - Monochroa servella (Zeller, 1839), Teleiodes aenigma Sattler, 1983, Dichomeris limosella (Schläger, 1849), Aethes rutilana (Hübner, 1817) and Eana derivana (LA Harpe, 1858) - known in Poland only from historical data. The occurrence in Podlasie of 75 species is reported for the first time, and the occurrence of 6 other species is confirmed for this area after more than 50 years. This work also describes a new species, Monopis bisonella Šumpich, sp. n. A number of species are very rare in Poland and occur only locally. These include Nemapogon wolffiellus Karsholt & Nielsen, 1976, Coleophora trifariella Zeller, 1849, Sophronia chilonella (Treitschke, 1833), Syncopacma sangiella (Stainton, 1863), Helcystogramma albinerve (Gerasimov, 1929), Cochylis flaviciliana (Westwood, 1854), Acleris comariana (Lienig & Zeller, 1846), Apotomis semifasciana (Haworth, 1811), Cydia coniferana (Saxesen, 1840), Euphydryas maturna (Linnaeus, 1758), Lopinga achine (Scopoli, 1763), Scopula nemoraria (Hübner, 1799), Epirrhoe tartuensis Moels, 1965 and Schrankia taenialis (Hübner, 1809). A complete list of the species found is provided in the Appendix at the end of this work.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Epiphyas postvittana (Walker, 1863) is an invasive polyphagous pest for the Azores and its bioecology and the potential natural enemies were unknown. We evaluated the temporal profile of this species larval abundance and the number of males captured in sex pheromone traps, hypothesizing that both profiles were similar. The study was carried out on seven endemic host plants and one native species grown in two forest nurseries (Furnas and Nordeste) in São Miguel Island over two years from 2018 to 2019. A total of 827 plants attacked by E. postvittana were observed in Furnas nursery (2018: 503, 2019: 324) and 1227 in the Nordeste (2018: 649, 2019: 578), including the presence of 525 larvae distributed by the Furnas (2018: 178, 2019: 79) and from the Nordeste (2018: 131, 2019: 137). In 2019, the average weekly number of males captured in the sex pheromone traps (total 31 weeks) were higher in Furnas (mean ± SE: 9.68 ± 1.982) than in Nordeste (3.33 ± 0.651). In synthesis, (i) the population density varied throughout the year and as a function of the host plant species in production; (ii) the abundance profile of larval and adults suggests has at least three to four generations per year and that adults are active year-round, experiencing some delayed development during the winter; (iii) a low larval density does not represent very serious damage to Azorean endemic plants, but is reflected in the population density of its natural enemies; (iv) some biological control agents are present in the field, parasitizing the larvae (i.e., Braconidae species of Meteorus ictericus (Nees, 1811) and Microgaster opheltes Nixon, 1968); (v) finally, the knowledge of the population dynamics and its natural enemies needs further and long-term study.

Abstract:
Auguste Bravais by his fundamental work on lattice has pioneered modern crystallography. He was born in 1811 in Annonay (France) at a short distance from Lyon and Saint-Etienne. He was then educated at the College Stanislas in Paris and entered the École Polytechnique in Paris in 1829. In 1832, he joined the French Navy as an officer and took part at scientific explorations to the Algerian Coast and Northern Europe. In 1837 he defended a PhD in Astronomy at the Faculty of Sciences in Lyon where he became Professor in 1841 to teach mathematics in astronomy. Then, in 1845, he moved at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris to take the chair of Physics, which he held till 1856. He published his first studies dealing with crystal lattice in 1849 in a short paper [1] and later wrote a book where he developed his theory fully based on geometrical theorems [2]. He died prematurely in 1863 exhausted by the loss of his only son. Like many scientists of that time Auguste Bravais was universalist and has been successively astronomer, geologist, mathematician, physicist, mineralogist, and crystallographer as well as an explorer from Lapland to the top of Mont Blanc [3]. In this communication, the steering committee Lyon-Saint-Etienne will recall the contribution of Auguste Bravais to crystallography and will show some aspect of his life that may be less known in our community.

Abstract:
The first knowledge about Peter the Great seems to penetrate into Japan during the lifetime of this Russian emperor, as early as the beginning of the 18th century. However, it was only after first attempts of Siberian merchants to start trade relations with Japan’s northernmost domain of Matsumae when Japanese intellectuals began to study Russia and its history. By the end of the century, the image of Peter the Great as an outstanding ruler had formed in Japan, with his main achievement being the expansion of the country’s territory, after which European Russia suddenly shared a border with northern Japan. Katsuragawa Hoshu, a court physician and the author of one of the first descriptions of Russia, might be the first Japanese who implied Peter the Great’s activities as a model for Japan, pointing out his politics in spreading the foreign trade. Japanese intellectuals of the first half of the 19th century continued to use Peter the Great’s reforms as a possible model for Japan. Watanabe Kazan (1793–1841) in his “Note about the Situation in Foreign Countries” used the Russian emperor as evidence of a leader’s role in winning nature-based and geographical obstacles in a country’s development. Aizawa Seishisai (1782–1863) and later Sakuma Shozan (1811–1864) pointed out Peter’s leadership qualities and personal involvement in reforms. Based on the study of Peter’s activities, Aizawa managed to create the program of Japan’s reforming known as the “New thesis” (“Shinron”, 1825), while Sakuma promoted the necessity of Western learning, especially the development of navy and artillery. This allows to assume a great influence of the study of Peter the Great and Russian history in formulating the ideas of a “rich country and strong army” that became a cornerstone of national ideology in Meiji Japan.

Abstract:
In the work of thackeray writing is portrayed as an unhealthy activity. The reader quickly perceives that all those who write, read, traffic in or contribute in any way to the manufacture and distribution of texts is in some way sullied by such an undesirable contact. To clarify thackeray's attitude to texts, it is necessary to consider the status of the text in thackeray's text as well as the author's position concerning writing as a mode of representation. Thackeray's text is examined with the help of the different definitions of the word "vanity": ostentation, pride, frivolity, futility, self-importance, betrayal, emptiness and illusion. Texts are objects of veneration which engender a harmful iconolatry and fetichism, they are self-referential and "hypotextual", and thackeray's own text betrays the reader, depriving him of authorial maps and presenting the text as a place of illusion, as ephemeral and frivolous as an attraction in a fair. Thackeray discourages his readers from seeking a signified in his text, except perhaps the signified of the vanity of such a quest

Abstract:

Abstract:
Within the larger framework of journalism in early victorian england , this study focuses on the case of thackeray who worked as a professional journalist from 1837 to 1847. After an analysis of the english press circa 1840, the various aspects of thackeray's career, as well as the content of his journalism (book and art reviews, gastronomic articles, travel writing, social criticism, parody, etc) are examined. It emerges that thackeray, although very typical of his time, contributed significantly to the professionalisation of journalists. A complete bibliography of thackeray's writings from 1828 (date of his first appearance in print) to 1848 (publication of vanity fair) completes the study

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the way that moral and aesthetic concerns about the relationship between fiction and reality are manifested in the work of particular novelists writing at different periods in the nineteenth century, Chapter One examines an early-century subgenre of the novel that features deluded female readers who fail to differentiate between fantasy and reality, and who consequently attempt to live their lives according to foolish precepts learned from novels. The second chapter deals with the realist aesthetic of W. M. Thackeray; focusing on the techniques by which his fiction marks its own relationship both to less realistic fiction and to reality itself. The final chapter discusses Oscar Wilde's critical stance that art is meaningful and intellectually satisfying, while reality and realism are aesthetically worthless: it then goes on the explore how these ideas play out in his novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to show the evolution that exists in W.M. Thackeray's treatment of women and marriage in his four main novels, that is to say in "Vanity Fair", "Pendennis", "Henry Esmond" and "The Newcomes". Women and marriage have been studied together because in Thackeray's novels marriage appears as the role of women in society and thus it seemed that both aspects should be regarded as a unique whole.

In these four novels it can be seen that, parallel to his search for an ideal gentleman, Thackeray was as well in pursuit of an ideal gentlewoman who he would find in Ethel Newcome. Thackeray created basically two types of women which may be grouped around the two central female characters in "Vanity Fair", that is to say Becky and Amelia. These two groups of women constitute in this way Thackeray's portrait of women at the beginning of the nineteenth century at the same time as a profound analysis of the nature of women and her role in society.

What Thackeray explores in his search for the ideal gentlewomen is one that he thought would adapt to the "new times" but that would nevertheless keep some traditional values among which "motherhood" is the one that he thought should be inherent to that ideal women.

From the thorough analysis of Thackeray's four main novels, the evolution in his creation of women characters until his creation of Ethel reveals his concern with both the nature of women and her role in society and thus points to his progressive attitude as reformer in his relation with the society of his time.

Abstract:
Our thesis treats of " initiatic stages ", that is to say the key moments, the knots of the narration allowing a hero to be moved up from the state of layman to the state of initiate. This thesis, belonging to comparative literature, studies this theme in four authors of four different languages ( the English, French, German and Italian languages ), who lived in both the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, restricting the study to the narrative works. More precisely, the corpus is composed of four novels by Huysmans, five novels by D'Annunzio, three novels and two short stories by Henry James and the entire work in prose by Hofmannsthal. The reference age compells us first to define the important notion of estheticism and its corollaries. This basis helps to set off, in the second part, the personal evolvement of each author freeing oneself gradually from the burden of estheticism. It appears that there are two main kinds of initiation : love and knowledge, but that it may fail, being a negative initiation, or lead to diametrically opposite results. Several constants regarding initiation also appeared and are analysed in the last part. In addition to initiatic beings and objects, we study the way the double, the abyss, the ascension, the labyrinth, the garden and the town of Venice facilitate or delay the access of the layman to an upper reality

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of rebellious child protagonists in Victorian bildungsroman. It discusses five novels ??? Jane Eyre, The Mill on the Floss, What Maisie Knew, Vanity Fair and Kim ??? that feature ???radical child??? protagonists who use indirect methods of narrative control to resist conservative models of character development. It argues that these novels form a subset of subversive English bildungsromane, which threaten the genre???s traditionally liberal values. Theories of narrative desire, reader seduction and discursive manipulation are used to reveal how the radical child in the Victorian bildungsroman takes command of the reader???s sympathy and gains power over the realist text, despite its physical and social powerlessness. Especially important is the presence of a fantasy counterplot, which coexists with, and ultimately undermines, the bildungsroman???s realistic surface narrative of successful socialisation. The counterplot allows radical child protagonists to develop in a non-linear manner that contradicts bourgeois ideals of stable progress. Focusing instead on sites of rupture between the individual and society, subversive bildungsromane resist both the dialectical model of character, which aims to harmoniously unite the protagonist with the realist world, and the dialogic model of interaction, which requires the restriction of personal liberty for the common good. This rebellious child in the Victorian bildungsroman thus represents an assault on the genre???s democratic ideals. Rejecting compromise, the radical child replaces the bildungsroman???s central ethic of interpersonal responsibility with an individualistic ethic of domination. Indeed, the thesis argues that the appeal of such child protagonistslies in their rejection of the obligatory, but anticlimactic, exchange of freedom for security that underpins the realist bildungsroman???s social contract, a rejection attractive to the reader precisely because it is unrealisable in reality. Finally, the thesis compares this radical child with the Gothic monster. While the monster is punished for its subversion, the radical child???s counterplot enables it to enact most of its subversive desires unpunished. The conservative English bildungsroman thus becomes a more effective way of representing asocial energies than the more obviously radical Gothic genre, which openly displays its anti-democratic sentiments.
