Abstract:
The article examines the Siberian regular regiments of the early 19th century. The author studies the organization and redeployment of the Siberian regiments from 1808 to the Patriotic War of 1812, using the method of historicism. This paper uses little-studied sources showing the role of the regular regiments of Siberia during Russia's participation in the Napoleonic Wars, and provides data on the number of these troops. The objectives of the study are to study the movement of military units from Siberia to the western part of Russia and changes in the management of Siberian regular regiments in Siberia by 1808, as well as the trends in the social and national composition of these regiments. The redeployment of Siberian regular regiments to the European part of Russia took place in two stages: 1808-1809. and 1810-1811. 3 infantry, 2 dragoon and 2 jaeger regiments participated in the redeployment. These military units were located in the fortresses of the Siberian defense line. The organizers of the redeployment were Generals A.A. Skalon and G.I. Glazenap. That biography of Major General A.A. Skalon, chief of the Irkutsk Dragoon Regiment, which is associated with the command of the Siberian regular regiments and the organization of the withdrawal of troops from Siberia. Sam A.A. Skalon was born in Biysk, but his ancestors were from France. He was the organizer of the first redeployment of regular regiments from Siberia. The main responsibility for organizing the second redeployment of the Siberian regular units was assigned to Lieutenant General G.I. Glazenap. This general had proper military experience in organizing regimental quartering. In 1813, it was he who initiated the creation of the Omsk military Cossack school. The military leadership of the Russian Empire of that time believed that the main purpose of the redeployment of the troops of the Siberian units was to prepare for a new war with France, to protect the western borders of Russia. This operation was carried out successfully, the regiments were located in new locations. Thus, the most important military task was completed.

Abstract:

The fact that the Bantu languages are related was first mentioned in a short publication by Martin Heinrich Lichtenstein (Berlin) in 1811. Very few Bantu languages were known at that time: only Kongo (Kikongo) as it was spoken at the mouth of the Zaire river, and some languages of southern Africa, on which a few notes were published in the Narrative of an Expedition by Captain J. K. Tucker in 1818, but which were written originally by William Marsden (probably in 1808) and possibly published separately.

Abstract:
In this article, we discuss a letter from a local official, named Raden Dipati Natadireja, to Governor-General Franco-Dutch Herman Willem Daendels (1808-1811). The letter written on 5 Jumadil akhir year of Dal 1223 AJ (July 25th, 1808) is a collection of the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia and is coded ID-ANRI K66a, File 3569, Folio 39-42. Through the letter, Natadireja reported that many officials in Cirebon, especially low-ranking officials, joined the revolters. He also reported that the revolts were led by three respected figures, namely Kulur, Rangin, and Draham. In this research, the manuscript firstly was studied by using the philology theory that contain the method of manuscript study (codicology) and the method of text study (textology). Furthermore, the manuscript content was dialogued to the historical fact in the Cirebon Sultanate so that we obtained a complete understanding about context of writing the manuscript. The result shows that the wave of revolt had occurred since at least 1806 as the people of Cirebon could no longer stand the tyrannical treatment of colonial administration. On the other hand, the Chinese people actually get special treatment, especially in terms of land management.

Abstract:
The Italian Army and the Conquest of Catalonia (1808-1811) A Study of Military Effectiveness in Napoleonic Europe Academic Fields and Disciplines SPS/03 – M-STO/02 The research has the purpose of reconstruct and evaluate the military effectiveness of the Italian Army existed under the reign of Napoleon I. Firstly through a statistic and strategic analysis of the development, and the following deployment, of the military institution of the Kingdom of Italy in the years of its existence (1805-14). Afterwards, a particularly significant case study was chosen, as the campaign of Catalonia (1808-11, in the context of the Peninsular War), in order to assess the operational and tactical contribution of the regiments sent by the Government of Milan and their integration in the overall military apparatus of the First Empire. The thesis wanted to respond to the lack of studies on the Italian army’s behavior in war and, at the same time, to introduce the methodology of the Military Effectiveness Studies (of British and American origin and, by now, enriched by a thirty-year old tradition) in the Italian historiography. The research is primarily based, besides the numerous memoirs of the Italian and French veterans, on the archive documentation of the Secrétairerie d’état impériale (Archives Nationales of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Paris), of the French Ministère de la Guerre (Service historique de la Défence, of Vincennes, Paris) and of the Italian Ministero della Guerra (Archivio di Stato di Milano). About the results, it has been verified how the Italian army has become a flexible and suitable instrument for Bonaparte, albeit in a context of substantial overall numerical marginality in comparison to the heterogeneous forces available to the Empire and its others satellites and allied states. Regarding the campaign of Catalonia, instead, it was possible to ascertain the fundamental contribution of the Italian regiments, in an operational and tactical perspective, for the success of the invasion. This was primarily due to the excellent general characteristics shown by the expeditionary force, but also to disciplinary and organizational peculiarities that have made the Italian corps suitable for particularly aggressive operations.

This study examines the policy of the Portuguese Empire in relation to neighboring platinum, taking as one of his references the administration of Governor and Captain-General Don Diogo de Souza, the Captaincy-General of the Rio Grande de São Pedro, between 1809 and 1811. During this period, worth mentioning, that were in full boiling the processes of political sovereignty dispute of the Hispano-American colonies, which represented a major threat to the integrity of the Portuguese Empire in the far south of America. Don Diogo, to take over the administration of Rio Grande de São Pedro do Sul, in 1809, had assigned itself an important mission: to ensure the integrity of the territories from Portugal front to the threat posed by the beginning of independence processes in the Hispano-American colonies, especially in the Rio da Prata, which sought to enforce a number of projects to relocate their sovereignty, as Spain had its royal family imprisoned by Napoleon. In this sense, the delimitation of time, it is worth noting, was chosen from the time he met the Collection of the Historical Archive of the Foreign Ministry and the National Archive in Rio de Janeiro, extensive manuscript and printed material that connects Don Diogo de Souza to a variety of characters related to the administration of the Portuguese Empire, headquartered since 1808 in Rio de Janeiro. As already said, in this period the Portuguese attempt to secure possession of the southern region of Rio Grande as part of the Portuguese intensified, also in view of the tensions caused by the independence movements of the Spanish colonies. To this end, various manuscript sources, letters, decrees and reports sent and received by Don Diogo were analyzed, and made possible the accurate interpretation of many webs of political, social, cultural and economic relationships maintained by the governor and captain-general. Thus, it was possible to verify, for example, how winding was bragantina policy in relation to neighboring, very susceptible to what happened in politics and economy outside Portugal. Moreover, it is worth mentioning the treatment of discussions about the intervention occurred in the Banda Oriental do rio Uruguai, which had been treated in the historiography, including contemporary as an invasion to purely expansionary. This, however, was much more complex, involving discussions between the managers of Portuguese politics that at times, showed how tenuous the lines that dictated the agenda for the governance of the Rio Grande and the Portuguese Empire were.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the representation of the "Orient", in French travel literature in the first nineteenth century. It invites to detailed analysis for the six travel histories of the "Orient", which we have chosen. The objective is to determine the status of these trips, the motivations, the conditions, the risks, the followed routes, the means of transport used at the time as well as the views of travel writers of the region, their impressions and feelings. It's also to know how the "Orient", the "Other" fascinating for Westerners, was presented in French literature of the Romanticism century. Following Bonaparte's expedition to the "Orient" in the early nineteenth century which opens the way to the region, many of the French travelers who searching of exoticism have led to the "Orient". On their return, they began to write and publish their diaries, their stories, notes. . . Etc. The literary, artistic and cultural manifestation unprecedented born in France, giving rise to the so-called «Orientalism». The present study shows, on the one hand, that the literature is produced by the imagination of the "Orient" with wealth equal to the disciplines that have been preferred so far by studies of the “Orient”, and on the other, that there is a need to open a dialogue between literature and the Eastern knowledge. So, this thesis evokes the singularity of the meeting between the world of eastern knowledge and the reader

Bordeaux 3, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990BOR30038.

Full text
Abstract:
Dandyism, such as it developed in france in the 1820's and especially after 1830, appears to be a phenomenon linked to the disappearance of the old aristocratic values and to the rise of the bourgeoisie. The dandy abides by strict rules that command his behaviour and his attire. In the salons where he is sought for his gracefulness while feared for his impertinence, in the circles or cafes of the boulevard, he fosters a cult of difference, a cult of strength and a cult of form, making him the impassive and ironic priest of a religion of beauty. Literature could not remain indifferent to such a cultural phenomenon that affected young people as much in the bourgeoisie as in the aristocracy. Balzac is the novelist who gave the most varied representation of social dandyism. Both fascinated and irritated by these sparkling figures, he understood better than anyone else that dandyism was the royal road taken by an idle youth kept away from power and forced to consume its energy in appearances in order to exist. Around 1830, some other writers, often marginal, turned dandyism into a way of writing, governed by playfulness, off-handedness, irony and derision. Establishing with their works and their readers the same type of relationship as the dandy maintains with his body and his audience, they partially borrowed from traditional parody the figures on which their poetics are based. This practice, long misunderstood, heralds modern works which have used protest as a creative principle. . .

Abstract:
When the authentic, or fictitious dream intervenes in the literary text, the vast inconscious question imposes itself. The literary implementation of the dream testifies, not only the interest in the inconscious part of man and his imagination, but also his fruitful links with reality : like reciprocity (exchange), continuity or rupture. These links, make all the dynamic « dream story » of the 19 th/ 20 th centuries. The dream like narration is part of the broader aesthetic, which, in all respects, breaks with progressivism and the supremacy of real, by establishing poetics of the improbable. Thus, chahracters, spaces, time derogate from the usual, (normative), building a different world that does not fail to recall the mythological universe. It is above all, to reflect on the adventure of the literary dream, traversing the different literary and aesthetic movements and enbodying a mirror that reflects the thougts, reflections, poetics of Gérard de Nerval, Théophile Gautier, Jules Supervielle and Michel Leiris

Abstract:

Then, questioning the way in which antinaturalists form a critical discourse. A chapter devoted to antinaturalist rhetoric will only reinforce the idea of multiplicity within this group. A double-movement of construction and deconstruction of this concept, will lead to reevaluate some grievances addressed to Zola by his enemies to highlight phenomena of re-borrowing and singular and paradoxical positions, which testify to the importance of the naturalist author in the literary field of the late nineteenth century, both literary and political

Abstract:
In the two decades from the coming of Marshal Daendels (1808-1811) to the Java War (1825-1830) Javanese society was turned on its head. New concepts of honour, status and racial superiority were introduced from a Europe transformed by the industrial and political revolutions. Military uniforms were now used to demarcate rank and status, service to the colonial state transcending nobility of birth. Through despoliation and military violence the indigenous courts of south-central Java were eviscerated while racial tensions led to an anti-Chinese pogrom which started the Java War. Two contemporary wartime diaries, both written by Belgians, illustrate the racialized world of the Netherlands East Indies and the ways in which colonial wars were conducted using native auxiliaries.

Martin, Alison E. "Dispute and Dissociation: John Black’s Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain (1811)." In Nature Translated, 40–74. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474439329.003.0003.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the first of Humboldt’s works to appear in English translation, John Black’s oft-maligned rendering of the Essai politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne (1808-11) as the Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain (Longman, 1811). Black resituated and rhetorically manipulated Humboldt’s text by appending a hefty footnote apparatus, which gave the narrative a second, highly audible, paratextual voice in constant dialogue with Humboldt’s own. Black therefore subverted the traditional power differential between author and translator to make the Political Essay critical of the very source text it apparently reproduced. His efforts at establishing his own authority and credibility through self-promotion backfired into intrusive pedantry. However, they did cause Humboldt to consider carefully the need for much closer collaboration with future translators, which offers a neat transition into the next chapter.

Abstract:
The final case study to be discussed is the role of the other British ‘non–state’ actors involved in Chile’s independence–era: merchants. The presence of merchants and traders of different nationalities had been very extensive along the Chilean coasts prior to the crisis of 1808, but their presence was illegal since Spain adopted a trade monopoly policy after the conquest of America. This situation changed after 1811 thanks to the policies adopted by the new Chilean authorities, who gradually ‘legalised’ the status of these ‘smugglers’. As a result, the activities of British merchants in Chile were no longer forbidden and their former status as illegal traders or smugglers shifted to a new one, in which they became legal merchants operating in Chile. British merchants who travelled to Chile were fundamental in fostering and consolidating, although as with the cases studied in chapters two and three, this was done according to local conditions.
