Marhold, Karol, and Petr Sklenář. "Senecio imbaburensis, proposed name for Lasiocephalus sodiroi in the genus Senecio (Asteraceae)." Phytotaxa 152, no. 1 (December 11, 2013): 59. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.152.1.8.

Abstract:
Lasiocephalus Willd. ex Schlechtendal (1818: 308), as traditionally circumscribed (e.g., by Cuatrecasas 1978, Dušková et al. 2010), is a neotropical genus of ca 25 species confined to the Andes and distributed from Venezuela to Bolivia. Nevertheless, recent studies by Pelser et al. (2007, 2010) have shown that based on phylogenetic analyses of nrITS and plastid DNA sequence data, species of the genus Lasiocephalus are deeply embedded in Senecio Linnaeus (1753: 866), and, consequently, should be transferred into this latter genus. In fact, a number of species of Lasiocephalus were originally described as Senecio or had been, at some point, transferred into Senecio so only few transfers are necessary.

Abstract:
The action of extracts from the stem, leaves, and fruit of Jatropha gossypiifolia on Biomphalaria glabrata was studied by analyzing survival, feeding capacity and oviposition ability. The extracts were obtained by macerating the plant parts in 92% ethanol, which were then evaporated until a dry residue was obtained and phytochemically studied. The molluscicidal activity on B. glabrata was investigated using the procedures recommended by WHO (1965). The amount of food ingested and oviposition were measured during each experiment. The extract of leaves from J. gossypiifolia was shown to be a strong molluscicidal agent, causing 100% mortality of B. glabrata, even in the lowest concentration tested, of 25 ppm. Regarding the fruit extract, there was variation in the mortality, depending on the concentration used (100, 75, 50 and 25 ppm). The snails that were in contact with the fruit extract had significant reduction in feeding and number of embryos in comparison to the control. The stem extract did not present molluscicidal activity nor had any influence on the feeding and oviposition abilities of B. glabrata, in the concentrations tested. In conclusion, the extracts of leaves and fruits of J. gossypiifolia investigated in this work show molluscicidal effect and may be sources of useful compounds for the schistosomiasis control.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the first half of the 19th century, the international interdenominational organization the Religious Tract Society in London provided financial support for the publication of religious books in the native languages of the people of the Kingdom of Prussia: German, Polish, Sorbian and Lithuanian. The branch of the Prussian Religious Tract Society established in Klaipėda, an important trading city of the time, took care of the translations of short books into Lithuanian along with their publishing and distribution. Wilhelm Andreas Rhenius (1753–1833), the inspector of the Bachman’s estate, the follower of the Moravian movement, who managed compilations, worked for the Klaipėda branch. This article aims to reveal the ties of Rhenius, the member of the Society, with the international organization in London, and his participation in educational activities in Klaipėda. Lithuanian translations of religious English texts patronized by the Religious Tract Society in London are also discussed, including an anonymous small volume book, The Warning Voice (Graudénimo Balsas, 1818), published in Tilsit, the Prussian Lithuania, in 4,000 copies, and the collected sermons Sixteen Short Sermons (Sźeßolika trumpi Kalbesei, 1820, Tilsit) by the British author Thomas Tregenna Biddulph (1763–1838), the minister of St. James’s Church in Bristol.

Abstract:
Ixora Linnaeus (1753: 110) is the third largest genus of the family Rubiaceae with more than 500 species distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Mouly et al. 2009). The genus Ixora is easily recognized by its articulate petioles, tetramerous flowers, bilobed stigma, uni-ovulate locules and seeds with a large adaxial hilar cavity (De Block 2008). In India, the genus is represented by 47 species (Barbhuiya et al. 2012; Murugan & Prabhu 2014; Karthigeyan & Arisdason 2015). Among of them, Ixora agasthyamalayana Sivadasan & Mohanan (1991: 313), I. beddomei Husain & Paul (1986: 87), I. gamblei Ramachandran & Nair (1988: 220), I. johnsonii Hooker (1897: 139), I. lawsonii Gamble (1920: 247), I. malabarica (Dennstedt 1818: 37) Mabberley (1977: 539), I. manantoddii Husain & Paul (1991: 16), I. mercaraica Husain & Paul (1986: 88), I. monticola Gamble (1920: 246) and I. sivarajiana Pradeep (1997: 315) are endemic to Western Ghats (Singh et al. 2015). During the verification of Ixora species from the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, the author found that the name Ixora monticola Gamble (1920: 246) is an later illegitimate homonym of I. monticola (Hiern 1870: 177) Kuntze (1891: 287). Therefore, a new name, Ixora ravikumarii Kottaim., is proposed here as a replacement name for I. monticola Gamble.

Abstract:
Purpose. Among the handwritten maps of Siberia, the Far East and part of Alaska of the 17th – beginning of the 20th centuries, maps containing ethnographic information were found. Two types of such maps were detected. Results. Maps, containing the names of ethnic groups, depicted on them, in their titles, were referred to the first group. Scenes from these ethnic groups’ lives could also be found on such maps. For example, the Map of the northern part of Siberia as far as Yakutsk, Kamchatka and the Asian part of the Bering Strait with images of the Yakuts, Tungus, Koryaks and Kamchadals both on foot and on dogsleds, the Kurils and Chuckchis both on foot and in a boat (created between 1730 and 1753). Maps and atlases on various themes referred to the second group and contain the names of ethnic groups (both Siberian and neighbouring), images of some representatives of the ethnic groups, the items they use and other valuable ethnographic information. General maps of Siberia as well as the maps of its separate administrative and geographical parts were examined. Conclusion. The names and images of ethnic groups such as the Yakuts, Tungus, Samoyeds, Ostyaks, Kirghiz, Tatars and others are most frequently shown on the maps that were studied by the authors. The analysis of the contents of these documents demonstrates that not only maps on the corresponding subjects but maps of various other categories as well can be used for ethnographic research. Information presented on such maps can become a valuable source when studying the territories settled by single ethnic groups, the appearance of the representatives of various ethnic groups and the items they used.

Abstract:
AbstractInflammatory markers have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality in general populations. We assessed whether these associations differ by diabetes status. From a population-based cohort study (n = 62,237) we included all participants with diabetes (n = 1753) and a control group without diabetes (n = 1818). Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for possible associations with cardiovascular mortality of 4 different inflammatory markers; C-reactive protein (CRP), calprotectin, neopterin and lactoferrin. During a median follow-up of 13.9 years, 728 (20.4%) died from cardiovascular disease (CVD). After adjustment for age, sex and diabetes, the associations of all inflammatory markers with risk of cardiovascular mortality were log-linear (all P ≤ 0.017 for trend) and did not differ according to diabetes status (all P ≥ 0.53 for interaction). After further adjustments for established risk factors, only CRP remained independently associated with cardiovascular mortality. HRs were 1.22 (1.12–1.32) per standard deviation higher loge CRP concentration and 1.91 (1.50–2.43) when comparing individuals in the top versus bottom quartile. The associations of CRP, calprotectin, lactoferrin and neopterin with cardiovascular mortality did not differ by diabetes, suggesting that any potential prognostic value of these markers is independent of diabetes status.

Abstract:
Dugald Stewart was an influential teacher and philosopher during the final years of the Scottish Enlightenment. Until recently he has been seen as merely a significant expositor of Thomas Reid's common sense philosophy. This thesis does not attempt to assess the novelty of Stewart's writings in relation to his Scottish predecessors such as Reid: rather, it offers a detailed historical study of aspects of his work, placing them in the political and cultural context of the period following the French Revolution. Two questions stimulated this thesis. First, what prompted Stewart, a moral philosopher who was not an experimental philosopher, to write a major work on methodology? Second, why was there a gap of twenty-two years between the first volume of his Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind (1792) and the second (1814), which contained his methodological treatise? I aim to answer these questions by offering a contextual intellectual history of some important aspects of Stewart's work. The thesis argues that Stewart faced a new problem: he had to deal with attacks on moral philosophy - the core subject of the Edinburgh University curriculum - some of which were produced by institutional and political factors affecting the Scottish universities, others by the rising authority of the experimental physical sciences. I consider a selection of Stewart's writings in the light of this problem. In 1804 Stewart's own student, Francis Jeffrey, gave public voice to the charge that the science of mind (which constituted the central part of Scottish common sense philosophy) was outdated, unscientific and useless. Thereafter, Stewart was engaged in what he saw as an urgent task - the defence of the very status of philosophy and the role of the philosopher. The thesis considers some of his major works (and other writings) from this perspective: Philosophical Essays (1810) contained his first direct retort to Jeffrey; Stewart's treatment of methodology in Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, Volume 2 (1814) and his section on intellectual character in Volume 3 (1827) are viewed as two significant components of his attempt to reassert the primacy of moral philosophy and the role of the moral philosopher.
