Abstract:
The texts concerned, all in the hand of Johann Reinhold Forster (1729–1798) and hitherto unremarked, have recently been transcribed and translated from the original Latin and have been made freely available on the website of the Linnean Society of London. Together they touch on many aspects of Forster's life and work, comprising a catalogue of North American animals, a fragmentary list of birds from the same area, “Description of 36 animals found during Capt. Cook's 2nd voyage … 1772–75”, a list of insects (British and North American), and a letter to Linnaeus on botanical matters which includes a description of Forstera sedifolia. Together they confirm Forster's impressive range of expertise, both as a naturalist and a linguist, and add weight to the movement that has in recent years sought to re-establish him in his rightful place as a major figure in eighteenth-century natural history.

Abstract:
Abstract Die Arbeit verdeutlicht und erschließt das Verfahren wissenschaftlicher Entdeckungen im 18. Jahrhundert am Beispiel von Johann Reinhold Forster, Vater des Abgeordneten der Mainzer Republik. Georg. Johann Reinold (1729–1798) wurde in Dirschau (heute Tczew) an der Weichsel geboren. Der Vater war Bürgermeister dieser Stadt, die damals wie heute zu Polen gehörte, aber 1772 von Preußen annektiert wurde. Der Sohn studierte Theologie in Halle und wurde Pfarrer, nahm aber 1765 einen Auftrag Katharinas II. an, über die Wolgakolonien zu berichten. Da sein Bericht kritisch ausfiel, erhielt er in Petersburg kein Honorar, und da er seine Pfarrstelle durch die Abwesenheit verloren hatte, ging er 1766 nach England. Er lehrte an der Dissenters Academy in Warrington Naturgeschichte und wurde für sein Buch über die Natur der Wolgaregion zum Fellow der Royal Society gewählt. 1772 bestimmte man ihn als offiziellen Naturforscher für die 2. Weltreise Cooks mit Georg als Gehilfen. Nach der Rückkehr stritten sich Cook und Forster über die Rechte an der Edition, der Auftrag zur Publikation wurde ihm entzogen und die Admiralität verbot ihm den Druck. Johann Reinold brachte die Schriften auf eigene Kosten unter dem Namen seines Sohnes heraus, aber ,,Das auf Patronage basierende Wissenschaftssystem verzieh diesen Fauxpas nicht …“ (S. 36) und die Auflage wurde boykottiert. Deutsche Freimaurer (Friedrich II., Herzog Ferdinand von Braunschweig und andere) zahlten die Schulden, so dass Forster 1779 zum Professor für Naturgeschichte und Mineralogie in Halle berufen werden konnte.

Abstract:
This article discusses the theoretical and pragmatic dialogue between the instructions given to the artists who participated in European scientific expeditions and the production of ethnographic illustrations. The discrepancy between methodological criteria and the empirical portrayal of exotic Others indicates an important dilemma: that the European representations of alien cultures were deeply rooted in European aesthetic idiosyncrasies and ideals of primitiveness. The French artist Gaspard Duché de Vancy (ca. 1750-1788) who travelled on François Galaup de Lapérouse’s scientific expedition (1785-1788) portrayed the society of Easter Island not according to what he actually observed, but rather to the captain’s distrustful judgement of the natives of Easter Island. In an effort to solidify a rather biased portrayal of the natives, the artist incorporated specific ethnographic devices, including exotic attire, weaponry and the gigantic monoliths, endeavouring to give his illustrations a more ethnographic and thus realistic outlook. Furthermore, this article discusses an illustration of Easter Island that the German traveller Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798) made, and which he included in his own German translation of Lapérouse’s travels. A study of Forster’s illustration indicates that the author generously borrowed crucial elements from Duché de Vancy’s original painting, and from two other paintings, made by the British painter William Hodges. By uncovering how expedition artists incorporated aesthetic idiosyncrasies into their compositions, this article uncovers how ethnographic illustrations were manipulated according to an exotic decor, where the alien reality was at first patch-worked and as a result constructed.

Abstract:
La thèse comprend trois parties. La première est constituée de plusieurs articles publiés de 1970 à 1985 dans trois grandes revues allemandes de recherche ("Historische Zeitschrift", "Saeculum" et "Archiv fur Kulturgeschichte"). La plupart de ces articles sont consacrés au publiciste allemand Friedrich v. Gentz (1764 - 1832), connu comme conseiller de Metternich. La deuxième et troisième partie consistent dans la présentation de deux inédits de Mirabeau ("de la tolérance" et "analyse raisonnée du projet d'un nouveau code prussien"). La présentation de l'écrit "de la tolérance" a fait l'objet d'un doctorat de 3e cycle, intitule "Mirabeau et la tolérance" (Faculté de droit, Montpellier, 1985). Son contenu est résumé dans un article de [l'auteur] ("Mirabeau et l'idée de la tolérance") qui fera partie d'un ouvrage intitulé : "la tolérance : naissance et affirmation d'une idée de l'époque moderne" (éd. Michel Peronnet). La troisième et principale partie consiste dans la présentation de "l'analyse raisonnée d'un projet de nouveau code prussien", rédigée par Mirabeau en 1788. Elle est consacrée aux relations de Mirabeau avec la Prusse en général et spécialement à son examen critique du AGB (Allgemeines Gesetzbuch) qui est pour lui "un des plus beaux livres que ce siècle ait produit".

Die Materialitätsgeschichte der Aufklärung anhand der Sammelpraxis von Vater und Sohn Forster. Weltumsegler, im Feld forschende Naturhistoriker und Ethnologen, Gelehrte - Johann Reinhold (1729-1798) und sein Sohn Georg Forster (1754-1794) trugen grundlegend zur Erschließung außereuropäischer Welten bei. Durch Sammeln, Ordnen, Zeigen, Zeichnen, Transportieren und Präparieren sowie durch Schreiben und Übersetzen haben sie einen erheblichen Anteil an dem Prozess genommen, der die zusammen mit James Cook erkundeten Räume in Wissensgegenstände verwandelte. Insofern waren die Forsters Produzenten: Das arkadische O-Tahiti und die Freundschaftlichen Inseln oder die düsteren Gestade - der Charlotten-Sund und die verschneite Ödnis Feuerlands - sind zum einen tatsächlich in Augenschein genommene Orte, zum anderen sind es Gegenstände und Ergebnisse von Gestaltungsprojekten. Der vorliegende Band erschließt das Geflecht der Arbeitsfelder von Johann Reinhold und Georg Forster. In den Blick genommen werden die Materialitätsgeschichte der Aufklärung im Bereich der Sammlungs- und Objektpraxis sowie die sammlungsrelevanten Infrastrukturen und Institutionen des aufgeklärten Wissens.
