Abstract:
The presence of PCBs in water bodies is an emerging issue for water quality. This is because, once PCBs reach a lake or river, they concentrate in the sediments by attaching to the organic matter. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to evaluate the level of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment from surface waters of Igodan, Okunmo, Lebi, Idepe and Oaustech in Okitipupa, Ondo State Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. Data obtained reveals that in Igodan the concentration of PCBs in sediment w.as PCB 44 (5.42±0.00), PCB 18 (3.04±0.00), PCB 28 (3.27±0.07) and PCB 170 (6.60±0.00). Okunmo PCBs concentration in sediment was PCB 44 (0.67±0.00), PCB 18 (0.03±0.00), PCB 28 (0.32±0.00) and PCB 170 (0.18±0.00). Lebi PCBs concentration in Sediment was PCB 44 (0.82±0.00), PCB 18 (3.96±0.00), PCB 28 (1.12±0.00) and PCB 170 (1.08±0.00). Except for PCB 170 (0.33±0.02), the PCB concentration in sediment from the Idepe and the OAUSTECH were both below the detection limit (BDL). Correlation between Physicochemical Parameters and PCBs homologs shows a negative correlation for the relationship of EC (Electrical Conductivity), TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and pH at ( -0.283), (-0.262) and ( -0.246) respectively. According to multivariate investigation, releases from nearby factories, deterioration of electrical cables and transformers, waste from university laboratories and facilities, as well as diesel residues from lister engines could be associated with the elevated levels of PCBs in sediments collected from the five sampled sites in Ondo State. TriPCBs > tetraPCBs were in this order in which the median concentrations of PCB homologues were found in sediments from the surface water.

Abstract:
Background: To find the effect of time interval between completion of neo adjuvant chemotherapy to the starting of adjuvant chemotherapy on the RFS and OS of patients with advanced ovarian cancers. Methods: It is a retrospective study of 170 patients with histopathological proven epithelial ovarian cancers who received full treatment (NACT+IDS+POAC) at Gujarat cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad between 2010- 2016. They were assessed and followed up for maximum 5 year. The time interval was defined as period from the completion of NACT including Interval de-bulking surgery to initiation of chemotherapy. Results: Out of 170 patients, 86 patients (50.5%) received adjuvant chemotherapy within 44 days after neoadjuvant chemotherapy while 84 patients (49.4%) received it after 44 days. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics between these two groups. The shorter and longer TI was having recurrence in 40 (53.48%) and47 (55.55%) patients respectively. Whereas overall survival was 67.44% and 47.61% respectively. Conclusions: Our analysis showed that patients with longer time interval >44 days had poorer recurrence free survival and overall survival in comparison to lesser TI group.

Abstract:
Alterations in glycoproteins, important cell surface constituents, have long been associated with various malignancies. The present investigation therefore explored the clinical significance of a glycoproteomics approach in patients with oral precancerous conditions (OPC) and patients with oral cancer. The study included 80 oral cancer patients, 50 patients with OPC, and 84 controls. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by Schiff's staining was carried out to study the alterations in glycoproteins. The results showed significant elevation (p<0.0001) of 192 kDa, 170 kDa, 116 kDa and 44 kDa glycoproteins in oral cancer patients and patients with OPC compared with controls. The odds ratio indicated a significantly higher risk for oral cancer among users and especially chewers of tobacco. The levels of all the glycoprotein bands (192 kDa, 170 kDa, 116 kDa and 44 kDa) were higher in patients with a habit of tobacco use (WHT) than in patients with no habit of tobacco (NHT) and were also higher in WHT controls than in NHT controls. Moreover, a 230 kDa glycoprotein consistently appeared only in individuals with tobacco habits and an increasing trend was observed from WHT controls to patients with OPC to WHT oral cancer patients. In conclusion, the results indicated the potential utility of glycoprotein alterations in monitoring sequential changes occurring due to tobacco consumption during neoplastic transformation.

Abstract:
AbstractMaternal elaborative reminiscing supports preschool children's autobiographical memory, self-concept, and emotion understanding. What are the factors contributing to mothers' elaborative style of reminiscing? In a longitudinal community sample (n = 170 at the final data point), this study explored the role of maternal depression (8–44 months), maternal sensitivity and maternal mind-mindedness (8 months), as well as child factors of joint attention (15 months), attachment security (15 months), and language (26 months) for mother–child reminiscing about a positive (happy) and a negative (scared) event at 44 months. Mothers could be classed into two groups of low versus increasing depression from 8 to 44 months, yet maternal depression did not uniquely predict mother–child reminiscing after accounting for maternal sensitivity and other factors. Instead, maternal sensitivity, children's joint attention, and language uniquely predicted children's elaborations about the scared event at 44 months, and maternal sensitivity uniquely predicted mothers' elaborations about the scared event at 44 months. Mothers who are more sensitive in early interactions may later be better at engaging their children when reminiscing about negative emotions. These findings have implications for the design of interventions targeted at supporting mothers to engage in elaborative reminiscing with their preschool children.

Abstract:
Zhang, Shenwei, Jason Yan, Shahani Kariyawasam, Terry Huang, and Mohammad Al-Amin. "A More Accurate and Precise Method for Large Metal Loss Corrosion Assessment." In 2018 12th International Pipeline Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ipc2018-78233.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipeline integrity decisions are highly sensitive to the assessment model. A less accurate and less precise model can conservatively trigger many unnecessary actions such as excavations without providing additional safety. Therefore, a more accurate and precise model will reduce excavations and provide higher assurance of safety. This is akin to using a more precise surgical tool such as a laser for cutting out a brain tumor where you can cut closer to the edge and be assured of cutting out more of the tumor (safer) and yet cut less of the surrounding brain tissue (less conservative). This paper presents a novel model for assessing large metal-loss corrosion based on in-line inspection (ILI) or field measurement. The model described in this paper utilized an unconventional approach, namely multiple plausible profiles (P2), to idealize the shape of the corrosion, and therefore is referred to as P2 model. In contrast, all existing models use one single profile for characterizing corrosion profile, e.g. RSTRENG utilizes a single worst-case river bottom profile to characterize the shape of corrosion. The P2 model has been initially validated using fourteen (14) full scale specimen-based hydrostatic tests on pipes containing real large corrosion features. Validation results showed that the P2 model is safe, but less conservative and more precise than RSTRENG. The magnitude of reduction in conservatism depends on the corrosion morphology. On average, the P2 model achieves 15% reduction in model bias and 44% reduction in standard deviation of model error. Further validation was provided using the testing data published by PRCI and PETROBRAS. Another set of burst tests are being conducted by TransCanada as part of the continuous validation of P2 model. The effectiveness of the P2 model was demonstrated through two case studies (denoted by Case study 1 and 2). Case Study 1 included 170 external metal-loss corrosion features that were excavated from different pipeline sections, and have field-measurements using laser scan tool. Case Study 2 included 154 ILI-reported external metal-loss corrosion features with RSTRENG calculated rupture-pressure-ratio (RPR) of less than or equal to 1.25 (i.e. RPR ≤ 1.25); hence, these features were classified as immediate features. The Case Studies showed that the use of the P2 model resulted in 80% less number of ILI-reported features requiring immediate action (i.e., RPR ≤ 1.25) and 89% less number of excavated features requiring repair (e.g., sleeve or cut-out) compared to the respective number of features identified by RSTRENG-based assessment. The reduction in the number of features requiring excavation or repair is highly morphology-dependent with the highest reduction achievable for pipeline containing long and wide corrosion clusters (e.g., tape-coated pipeline). However, the P2 model is applicable to all clusters regardless of the number of individual corrosion anomalies associated with the cluster.

Abstract:
MGR recorded 1570 violent incidents during January 2024, mostly triggered by politics, access to resources, and other socio-economic factors. More than 217 deaths and 1991 injuries have been recorded from these incidents. The highest number of violent incidents have been recorded in the form of clashes and attacks (670). Some 738 incidents are directly political violence, protests and arrests which resulted in 34 deaths. Geographically, Chittagong (395) scores the highest number of violence followed by Dhaka (310), Barishal (254), Khulna (178) and Rajshahi (170). There were 120 protests and demonstrations and atleast 83 of protests were triggered by politics. While some 24.91% of political violence contributed by Bangladesh Awami League & affiliates, 8.72% contributed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Activists of independent election candidates conducted 16.01% of political violence. Intra-party violence within the Awami League showed a significant surge in January as Awami League to encourage 'independents' for 'participatory' polls. Whereas 63% incidents were rural, 37% violence incidents took place in urban areas. In this month, student violence increased with a total of 41 cases reported across different regions. In the election week (January 1-7), a total of 423 instances of electoral violence and irregularities occurred, leading to 599 non-lethal casualties, 7 fatalities, 177 arrests, and 232 cases of property destruction. On the day of the election, the country witnessed 90 incidents of electoral violence and 44 cases of electoral irregularities.
