W artykule recenzyjnym omówiono monografię Twenty-First-Century Feminisms in Children’s and Adolescent Literature [Feminizmy XXI wieku w literaturze dziecięcej i młodzieżowej] (2018) autorstwa Roberty Seelinger Trites. Jego celem jest nakreślenie znaczenia tzw. zwrotu materialnego w teorii feministycznej dla badań nad płcią społeczno-kulturową w literaturze dla młodych odbiorców. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od przybliżenia sylwetki Trites i jej poprzednich prac. W kolejnej części przedstawione zostają różne sposoby teoretycznego ujmowania ciała w myśli feministycznej. Przywołanie stanowisk zajmowanych przez Susan Bordo, Judith Butler czy Elizabeth Grosz pomaga stworzyć odpowiednie tło dla podstawowych założeń feminizmu materialnego i teorii Karen Barad. Sproblematyzowanie kwestii ucieleśnionej podmiotowości kobiecej pozwala zarazem wykazać, w jaki sposób zastosowanie przez Trites feminizmu materialnego do badań nad literaturą dziecięcą i młodzieżową wyznacza nowe kierunki analizy i interpretacji. W dalszej części artykułu zostają omówione poszczególne rozdziały książki, w których Trites włącza do dyskusji perspektywy kluczowe dla współczesnych feminizmów, w tym m.in. teorię krytyczną rasy, ekokrytykę, teorię queer oraz studia nad niepełnosprawnością.

Soon after the Protestant Reformation took place in Livonia in the 16th century, the currents of European humanism came to Livonia. As a result of the historical and religious impact, the level of education increased, enabling an environment for the development of the literature. Soon various Latin poetry texts int. al. 17th-century occasional poetry written by the humanists of Riga started to appear. The aim of the article is to bring to light the components of nuptial (epithalamium, ὑμέναιος/hymenaeus, carmen nuptialis, etc.) poetry written in Riga in the 17th century, as well as by exploring the specific features of occasional poetry to capture readers’ and researchers’ interest in the previously undiscovered cultural heritage. At the beginning of the article, the tradition of nuptial poetry is explained. Then, by examining the basic principles one must take into account in composing occasional poetry based on works of the ancient rhetors – Menander (Μένανδρος Ῥήτωρ, c. 3rd century), pseudo-Dionysius (pseudo-Dionysius/Διονύσιος), Himerius (Ἱμέριος, c. 315–c. 386) and the book “Seven Books on Poetry” (Poetices libri septem, 1561) written by Italian humanist Julius Caesar Scaliger (1484–1558) – a table of the most used topics in nuptial poetry is formed. Afterwards, the poetry written in Riga and its most typical components (didactics, laudation, inducement, foresight, wishes/congratulations and prayers) is compared to the topics offered by previously mentioned theoreticians. Fragments of Latin nuptial poetry written in Riga are included to portray the components of poetry more clearly. All translations of poetry included in the article are made by the author of the article.

The humanists of Riga began to compose various Latin poetry texts due to the currents of European humanism, which came to Livonia soon after the Protestant Reformation took place in Livonia in the first half of the 16th century. As a result of this historical and religious impact, the level of education increased, enabling an environment for the development of the literature. The aim of the article „Religious characters in the 17th-Century Nuptial Poetry in Riga” is to bring to light the content of nuptial (epithalamium, ὑμέναιος/hymenaeus, carmen nuptialis etc.) poetry written in Riga in the 17th century, providing insight into the most frequently mentioned characters and their meaning, as well as by exploring the specific features of occasional poetry to capture reader’s and researcher’s interest in the previously undiscovered cultural heritage. The subject of the study is more than 380 Latin nuptial poems, which are stored in the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books of the Academic Library of the University of Latvia. The poems are printed at the beginning of the 17th century by the second typographer of Riga city Gerhard Schröder (?–1657). The article includes data from a classification table (created by the author) in which the main characteristic of each poem is highlighted, including the mentions of all (more than 280) characters from ancient Greek and Roman mythology, as well as biblical and historical characters. Fragments of Latin nuptial poetry written in Riga are included to portray the content of poetry more clearly. All translations of poetry in the article are done by the author.

In particular, the Viennese representation of Calderón's Fineza contra fineza (1671) proves its importance by the editio princeps being realised in the imperial capital. The first one is a story from Persia, dating back to the seventh Century AH (13th Century AD), by the well- known Iranian writer Sa’di Al-Shirazi. The other two were written by the two Arab writers; Yosuf Idrees and Abdu Salaam Al ‘Ojaily. The presence of “Death” as a theme in these three stories constitutes a distinctive and common feature that cuts across these three stories despite the differences among them in terms of setting, time, details and characters. This, in turn, vividly demonstrates that human beings have a common concern irrespective of differences. This, consequently, proves the prominent role played by comparative literature in enhancing, and cementing common understanding among human beings and, therefore, making it firmly rooted in them. The study also aims to focus on this theme at two levels; the implicit and the explicit. The main objective is to make the reader become fully acquainted with how these two concerted levels lead to a common artistic vision in the three stories in spite of their differences in terms of content and details (i.e. setting, time, character, etc.).

Abstract:
The present article highlights the problem of translation as creativity in the writings of French translators of the 17th century. The analysis of the traductologic texts of the classicism era allowed to establish two directions in conceptualization of the creative aspect of the translator’s work. Translators who grouped around the newly formed French Academy, in particular Perrot d’Ablancourt and supporters of translations of the genre les belles infidèles, equate the work of the translator with the work of the author and see his task in giving a new real creation of the receiving literature. However, due to the uncertainty of the limits of creative freedom of the translator, their translation practice rather compromised the very idea of creativity in translation. The second and more moderate direction, represented by translators from Port-Royal, is also oriented to the receiving language and culture. The translator is also considered a full-fledged author and must create a real work, but his freedom is limited by the text of the original, differences in language and culture, the rules of translation. The problems of translation creativity, which was discussed in the traduсtological texts of classicism, includes: role of translator and author, their rivalry, choice between literal and free translation, restriction of translator’s freedom, etc.

The author of the paper demonstrates how sixteenth- and seventeenth-century historiography applied a number of identity stereotypes which were linked to the Slavs, Dalmatians, Illyrians, Morlachs, and Croats in contemporary literature and scholarship to three well-known Schiavoni artists: Andrea Meldola (Andrija Medulić), Niccoló dell’Arca and Giulio Clovio (Julije Klović). For example, the qualifier ‘barbaric’, used to denote the work of Niccoló dell’Arca in sixteenth-century historiography from Bologna, represents one of the stereotypical characteristics about the Schiavoni which were frequent at the time.The first part of the article focuses on sixteenth-century interpretations of the Croatian and Macedonian identity (origin) of the famous painter of miniatures, Giulio Clovio (Julije Klović) in the works of his contemporaries such as Giorgio Vasari and Francisco de Holanda, followed by those in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century works of Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, Ivan Golub and Milan Pelc. Particular attention is given to the currently prevailing hypothesis that the Macedonian origin of Giulio Clovio (Julije Klović) might have been invented with the aim of testifying to his artistic and ancestral rootedness in the classical world.The second part of the article deals with records about Andrea Meldola and Niccoló dell’Arca in the writings of Italian historiographers Girolamo Borselli, Cherubino Cherardacci, Carlo Ridolfi and Marco Boschini, all of whom tried to interpret specific stylistic features in the works of these two artists as a consequence of what one can call their genotype and phenotype. The author of the article draws particular attention to the appearance of the ideologeme concerning the barbaric character of Niccoló dell’Arca in the records of Girolamo Borselli (late fifteenth century) and Cherubino Cherardacci (sixteenth century).

Abstract:
Our understanding of the cultural transformation phase of the Islamic grave in South Sulawesi is still limited to the study of its territorial scope, not specific to a particular locality or kingdom. This study aims to determine the stage of transformation of Islamic shape tomb in Tanete Kingdom, Barru and its causal factors. The research used artefactual data which are four complex of King Tanete tomb, interview data and historical data. The methods used are survey, interview, literature study, identification, and interpretation. The study concludes three stages of transformation shape tomb at Tanete, the first transformation of the early seventeenth century characterized by tombstone, both occurring in the mid-18th century to the beginning of the nineteenth century characterized by decorative and inscribed tombs, and the third occurred beginning of the 20th century with the characteristic of European architecture. The cause of the three stages of the transformation of the tomb is the external factor, the first stage of the Gowa kingdom, the second stage of Malay culture, and the third stage is the influence of political relations with the Dutch Government. Pemahaman kita tentang fase transformasi budaya kubur Islam di Sulawesi Selatan masih terbatas pada kajian yang sifatnya wilayah, belum spesifik pada satu lokalitas atau kerajaan tertentu. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui tahapan tranformasi bentuk makam Islam di Kerajaan Tanete, Barru dan faktor penyebabnya. Data yang digunakan adalah data artefaktual yaitu empat kompleks makam Raja Tanete, data wawancara dan data sejarah. Metode yang digunakan adalah survei, wawancara, studi literatur, identifikasi dan interpretasi. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan tiga tahap transformasi bentuk makam di Tanete, transformasi pertama pada awal abad ke-17 yang dicirikan oleh makam bercungkup, kedua terjadi pada pertengahan abad ke-18 hingga awal abad ke-19 yang dicirikan oleh makam dekoratif dan berinskripsi, dan ketiga terjadi awal abad ke-20 dengan ciri arsitektur Eropa. Penyebab tiga tahap transformasi bentuk makam tersebut adalah faktor eksternal, tahap pertama dari kerajaan Gowa, tahap kedua dari budaya Melayu, dan tahap ketiga adalah pengaruh hubungan politik dengan Pemerintah Belanda.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to analyze the existing ideas about Russian literature in Britain at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. A brief overview of the advancement of works by Russian classics among British readers is given. The spread of Russian literature in Britain had been progressing slowly for a long time due to the difficulty in translation and the lack of interest in Russia and Russian culture. However, at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, the situation changed in the British literary community. This period saw a plethora of publications of translations of Russian fiction that were accomplished by professional translators, Slavonic scholars, and writers. These translations appeared in periodicals and other print formats. The article provides an overview of the translation of works of F. M. Dostoevsky, L. N. Tolstoy, A. P. Chekhov, who have become the most understandable and accessible to the English mentality. It happened thanks to such outstanding translators as C. Garnett, Aylmer and Louise Maude, S. S. Koteliansky (who worked in collaboration with V. Woolf, J. M. Murry), R. E. C. Long and others. Having gained access to high-quality translations of Russian classics, British writers began to study their works in greater detail. The British saw the influence of English and European writers (W. Shakespeare, Ch. Dickens, J.-J. Rousseau, J. W. Goethe, V. Hugo, etc.), e.g., in F. M. Dostoevsky’s works. However, later the Russian influence could also be felt in the Western novel, modifying it. There is an opinion that the works of A. P. Chekhov, translated by Garnett, changed the English short story, making it exactly as we know it. V. Woolf, J. Joyce, B. Shaw, J. Galsworthy, A. Bennett and others admired the depth, style, and language of Russian writers. Translation of works of great Russian authors facilitated the flow of information about Russia and expanded the Brit’s view on the country and its people. It once again confirms the existence of mutual cultural exchange between the two countries from a historical perspective. It can be argued that, despite all the complexities of the relationship, the mutual influence of the literatures of the two countries is quite significant.

A culturally nuanced translation of archaic Greek verbal culture can only be achieved with reference to the original audience. In Bacchylides 17 (‘Theseus’ Dive’), the fifth-century poet's compound epithets operate entirely within an epic-lyric tradition, in contrast to the fourth-century verbal innovation of Timotheus. Poetry in the English language has always followed Timotheus more than Bacchylides, reaching a climax in the theory of ‘inscape’ and expressive epithets of Gerard Manley Hopkins. As a classicist, Hopkins was intimately familiar with Greek poetic diction, and his notebooks record that he interpreted the Iliad's traditional epithets contextually and not merely lexically. Analogically, we may imagine Greek audiences as projecting their own personal contexts and experience into the interpretation of the traditional compound epithets of Bacchylides 17.

The article is dedicated to some problems of museum activity and tourism. The main idea of the work is conception and development of a literature museum in memorial context. There is historical and analytic review of a real meaning of Russian country estate for poets and writers in the 19"1 century in the article as well as a cultural aspect: from the basement of the traditions in country estate life at the end of the 17"1 century, through its functions in the 18"1 century, and at the end presentation of country estate culture in the literature of golden age in Russia. The article classifies the structure of the memorial estate complex, observes Russian country estate evolution from the 18"1 till the early 20"´ century, defines several types of Russian country estate and its historical and current importance. A memorial estate or reserve museum activity represents a comprehensive approach which is realized by museum keepers, animators and guides. A special thing is an excursion for single visitors or family groups and individual programs. The article characterizes the activities of the literature memorial estate and defines a specialization of its projects. The State Tyutchev Memorial estate «Mouranovo» is considered as a unique museum represented in European tradition of memorial estate culture.

Treatises on four ultimate truths about the human condition in 16th and 17th century Czech literature an outline of issuesCzech literature of the 16th and 17th century was for readers of that time an important source of admonishment concerning death and afterlife. Manuals about the art of dying — ars moriendi books — provided ample advice on how to die a “good death”. Besides that, their authors focused also on other issues of ultimate importance for human beings, i.e. death, God’s judgment, heaven and hell. The aim of the treatises was to make readers lead a good life through constant pondering over death and the uncertainty of the soul’s fate in the afterlife. Descriptions of various tortures suffered by the damned in hell were meant to frighten sinners, make them repent and change their lives. Descriptions of heaven, on the other hand, were supposed to lure people into doing good. According to the Catholic dogma, after death, the soul can go to heaven, hell or purgatory. The Protestant Reformation rejected purgatory as wishful human fiction, and returned to a traditional dualistic view of the afterlife. Příručky šťastného umírání — knihy ars moriendi přinášely rady, jak má dobrá smrt vypadat. Kromě této problematiky se autoři zabývali tématy souvisejícími s posledními věcmi člověka, to je smrtí, božím soudem, peklem a nebem. Cílem traktátů bylo přimět čtenaře k dobrému životu prostřednictvím myšlenky na smrt a nejistý posmrtný osud duše. Líčení pekelných trestů mělo vyvolat u hříšníků hrůzu, přimět je, aby změnili své chování a nastoupili cestu pokání. Popisy ráje měly lákat a přitahovat. Podle katolíků duše po smrti mohla jít do nebe, pekla nebo ji čekal očistěc, kde měla smýt hříchy a poté vstoupit na nebesa. Reformace odmítla učení o očistci, a proto na něm protestanští autoři zdůrazňovali lidský výmysl.

Kahlbaum first described catatonia; later Kraepelin, Gjessing, and Leonhard each defined periodic catatonia differently. A 48-year-old female with catatonia, whose grandmother probably died from it, was prospectively followed for >4 years in a US psychiatric state hospital. Through 4 catatonic episodes (one lasting 17 months) there were menstrual exacerbations of catatonia and increases in 4 biological variables: (1) creatine kinase (CK) up to 4,920 U/L, (2) lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) up to 424 U/L, (3) late afternoon cortisol levels up to 28.0 mcg/dL, and (4) white blood cell (WBC) counts up to 24,200/mm3 with neutrophilia without infections. Records from 17 prior admissions documented elevations of WBC and LDH and included an abnormal dexamethasone suppression test (DST) which normalized with electroconvulsive therapy. Two later admissions showed CK and WBC elevations. We propose that these abnormalities reflect different aspects of catatonic biology: (1) the serum CK, the severity of muscle damage probably exacerbated by the menses; (2) the hypercortisolemia, the associated fear; (3) the leukocytosis with neutrophilia, the hypercortisolemia; and (4) the LDH elevations, which appear to be influenced by other biological abnormalities. Twentieth-century literature was reviewed for (1) menstrual exacerbations of catatonia, (2) biological abnormalities related to periodic catatonia, and (3) familial periodic catatonia.

Abstract Pierre-Ignace Chavatte did not write his chronicle of the city of Lille (Chronique memorial, 1657–1693) exclusively in his own words and based on his personal experience. Instead, he incorporated rather frequently second-hand information (taken especially from historical pamphlets) on events that took place in other regions of Europe. This also applies to aspects of the Christian-Ottoman antagonism in the 17th century. As a consequence the Chronique contains a number of lexical elements of Turkish origin, which are of particular interest from the point of view of historical language contact. As a rule the historical sources used by Chavatte cannot be identified with precision. However, precise identification is possible in the case of the Relation exacte des vaines Prieres & Jûnes, ordonnés par le Grand Seigneur, dans tout l’Empire ottoman, which extends over two folio pages in the original manuscript. This passage is based on a printed French original dating from 1686, which was translated from Italian. The Italian version in turn insinuates that the whole text is ultimately based on a Turkish original. Significant historical inconsistencies, however, clearly prove that the Relation was, in actual fact, part of the Christian anti-Muslim propaganda.

The paper deals with the features of expression of some modal meanings in the Masoretic text of the book of Genesis by means of particles and the special construction of infinitivus absolutus, which serves to express modality in Hebrew. The ways of translating into Slavic languages in 16th-century bibles created on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are considered as well. The data from classical translations – LXX, the Vulgate, and the Czech Venetian Bible – are also used for analysis. The particles were chosen because they are desemantized and do not make considerable changes in the semantics of sentences, but merely specify them. The infinitivus absolutus constructions are a means of expressing modal semantics. They are absent in Slavic languages and require understanding and special translation efforts from the translator. It is concluded that even the translator dealing with sacred texts corrects modal semantics and changes the formal means of its expression, indicating that the modality is understood as a category of a special kind, with unclearly defined borders and a diverse and non-rigid set of means of expression. The analysis of translated texts made using various original texts shows that translators while trying to preserve the spirit and letter of the original or authoritative translation (the Masoretic text, Church Slavonic translation, the Venetian Bible, the Vulgate), nevertheless, consider modality to be a category that can be easily sacrificed in translation, by changing or even eliminating the modal meaning.

Bryophytes are not numerous but a very ancient and original group of higher plants. Due to their small size the study of bryophytes has long lagged behind the study of vascular plants. According to the literature available to us the first information about mosses of the Samara Region was obtained only at the beginning of the XX century. According to available literature data the total number of bryophytes of the Samara Region are at least 192 species of mosses from 98 genera, 47 families and 17 orders belonging to 5 classes (Haplomitriopsida, Jungermannopsida, Sphagnopsida, Polytrichopsida, Bryopsida). On the basis of the data obtained Bryopsida class (10 orders, 37 families, 84 genera and 149 species) dominates in the number of orders, families, genera. The order Hypnales is most widely represented by 17 families, 49 genera, 75 species. Sphagnaceae (19 species, but the genus Sphagnum 1) leads in the number of species among the 47 families, Amblystegiaceae (10 genera, 13 species) leads in the number of genera. Sphagnum - 19 species, Brachythecium (7 types), Bryum and Plagiomnium (6) of the largest generas.

Abstract. A novel global water scarcity assessment for the 21st century is presented in a two-part paper. In this first paper, water use scenarios are presented for the latest global hydrological models. The scenarios are compatible with the socio-economic scenarios of the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs), which are a part of the latest set of scenarios on global change developed by the integrated assessment, the IAV (climate change impact, adaptation, and vulnerability assessment), and the climate modeling community. The SSPs depict five global situations based on substantially different socio-economic conditions during the 21st century. Water use scenarios were developed to reflect not only quantitative socio-economic factors, such as population and electricity production, but also key qualitative concepts such as the degree of technological change and overall environmental consciousness. Each scenario consists of five factors: irrigated area, crop intensity, irrigation efficiency, and withdrawal-based potential industrial and municipal water demands. The first three factors are used to estimate the potential irrigation water demand. All factors were developed using simple models based on a literature review and analysis of historical records. The factors are grid-based at a spatial resolution of 0.5° × 0.5° and cover the whole 21st century in five-year intervals. Each factor shows wide variation among the different global situations depicted: the irrigated area in 2085 varies between 2.7 × 106 and 4.5 × 106 km2, withdrawal-based potential industrial water demand between 246 and 1714 km3 yr−1, and municipal water between 573 and 1280 km3 yr−1. The water use scenarios can be used for global water scarcity assessments that identify the regions vulnerable to water scarcity and analyze the timing and magnitude of scarcity conditions.

For a long time the apocryphal Ladder of Jacob was accessible only in arbitrarily selected translations. Without a critical edition and a comprehensive study of the whole textual segment, scholars were unable to evaluate its significance for Early Jewish and Christian literature. Since 2015/17, with the publication of a new critical edition and German translation (accompanied by a detailed introduction, footnote commentaries and appendices with related texts), a new approach to this important but hitherto widely unknown text has been made possible. This approach verifies the different layers or strata in the text, which are: a supposed Jewish apocalypse (mid-second century), a Christian expansion of the angels speech in light of the praeparatio evangelica tradition (fourth–seventh centuries), a Jewish mystical prayer (eleventh century) and the incorporation of this narrative block into the Tolkovaja Paleja together with a series of exegetical commentaries (end of the thirteenth century). In the light of the new approach, it can be said that the Ladder of Jacob is most of all an outstanding example of mutual relations between Jewish and Christian theology.

The Fundamental Concern in Translation Theory, from Saint Jerome to the Present, has Been the Relation Between a Text and its version in another language. This relation is often conceived in the Platonic terms of original and copy: the original is viewed as sacrosanct (especially when it is a sacred text but also when it is not), while the translation is seen, at best, as imperfect and deficient and, at worst, as an adulteration, a profanation, and a betrayal that is captured in the Italian phrase traduttore traditore. Conversely, that relation has on occasion also been inverted in claims that the translation can be superior to the original—for example, Jorge Luis Borges's famous declaration that “the original is unfaithful to the translation” (239) or, less radically, Gabriel García Márquez's reported remark that Gregory Rabassa's translation of One Hundred Years of Solitude is better than the Spanish original (Rabassa 43). At other times, the relation between original and translation is seen as antagonistic, the one trying to displace the other, or as its heir and only chance of survival. In this view, the original is condemned to death and oblivion because it is written in a dead language, a rival language, or a geopolitically weak language. Think of the phenomenon that Abdelfattah Kilito cites of some classical Arabic texts—such as al-Harīrī‘s Maqāmāt (“Assemblies”), written at the height of Arab civilization's power in the twelfth century—which seem to have been composed in such a way as to render their translation impossible (17-18). By contrast, notes Kilito, some contemporary Arab novelists seem to write with their translators in mind, avoiding difficult language and obscure cultural expressions that may reduce their works’ chances of being translated into English or French, the gateway to international success (19n7).

The article features the historiography and sources on the issue of physical culture and sport developmentin the Kemerovo region at the turn of the XXI century. Having analyzed a wide range of publications (monographs, articles, dissertation abstracts, academic and journalistic literature), the authors came to the conclusion that certain material has already been summarized on this topic. The study offers a detailed description of the changes in the legislative field that were made to ensure a better functioning of the system of physical culture and sports in the Kemerovo region in 1991–2007. However, the development process of physical culture and sport movement in the region remains poorly investigated. The same can be said about the issues related to the material-technical base of the Kuzbass sports and the system of sport personnel training in the region. In the domestic literature there are no works devoted to the complex process of development of physical culture and sports movement in the Kemerovo region in the period. The analysis of the sources on the selected theme has revealed that the most informative among them were two classes of written sources: legislative and documentary. The available range of sources has allowed the authors to trace the process of development of physical culture and sports region in the conditions of changing socio-economic development model of the country.

Abstract This article explores the connection between the absent deity of Epicurean Deism and the father figure in Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789–1794). The absent, elusive or indifferent God – which I trace back to Epicurean theology and its theory of atoms – plays out in Blake's depiction of a father whose absence or neglect is an implied cause of man's alienation. The article firstly looks at the inheritance of Epicureanism in 17–18th century Deist texts, then considers Blake s references to Epicureanism in his works, and finally argues that Blake critiques such concepts of God and fatherhood in a selection of Songs.

The publication complements the materials collected in the book Valery Bryusov as a literary historian (Moscow, 2019, series “Literary Heritage Library”, edited by N.A. Bogomolov and A.V. Lavrov) that contains Bryusov’s correspondence with P.I. Bartenev and N.O. Lerner. The correspondence of Valery Bryusov and Petr Bartenev includes, among others, 39 Bryusov’s letters of 1898–1909, preserved in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts. The corpus of Bryusov–Bartenev correspondence reflects the poet’s work as a secretary, contributor, reviewer in the journal of history and literary history Russkiy Arkhiv (Russian Archive) edited by Bartenev (Bryusov has become an outstanding Russian classical poetry expert of his time). Two more Bryusov’s letters relating to Bartenev’s last years have been recently discovered. They are preserved in the State Literary Museum Manuscript Department and shed light on some details of Bryusov’s relations with Bartenev, as well as their shared interest in classical literature, and provide some additional data for the biographies of Bryusov and his correspondent — a contemporary of Tyutchev, Pogodin, the Aksakovs, an “archive-digger”, described by Bryusov as “a committed publisher of historical materials” and viewed by the poet as a person not at all alien to literature and culture of the early 20th century.

AbstractThe study pursues two aims. The first part is dedicated to the deciphering and editing of a new text preserved as palimpsest on a parchment bifolio. It belongs to a small collection of documents from the Cairo Genizah owned by the University of Geneva. The fragment reveals an extract from an early version of a Passion of St Plato of Ancyra, a saint who is best known through Byzantine menologia. His Passion was also reworked by Symeon Metaphrastes in the 10th century. However, the new text is closest to an anonymous pre-metaphrastic version available in Migne’s Patrologia Graeca. The second aim of the paper (developed in Part 2) is, therefore, to establish the relation between different versions of the Passion and locate the new witness from the Cairo Genizah in the history of the transmission of this text.

Abstract:
Te article focuses on the foreignisms used in the multicultural novel “Te Book of Khalid” by Ameen Rihani. Foreign words in literature possess certain attractive power as well as produce esthetic and artistic effects. Along with creative force and meaning foreignisms may as well give the reader some notion of the author’s self-identifcation and self-representation as member of the literary intellectual community of Syrian and Lebanese frst emigrants in the frst half of the XX-th century. Te novel in question is characteristic of typical features related to Arab-American literature of that period. Stylistic and literary analysis of foreign words in the book gave the desired self-image of the author as a representative of the Arab community in the USA. Tis image comprises certain philosophical and religious principles, authentic social and cultural features, literary and stylistic uniqueness. Close analysis of foreignisms as a linguistic and stylistic means adds to the overall understanding of the novel including the underlying messages and conceptual implications.

SummaryThere are only a few sequences of ancient magic signs known to us today that have been preserved on multiple artefacts. A previously unnoticed sequence of 17 signs on a gem in the Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna occurs with minor but significant variations on two other gems in the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich. The Viennese gem is dated to the 16th century and is documented as a drawing in a 17th century publication. The first Munich gem has been assigned to the Graeco-Roman period. The second gem, which, according to the inventory card of the museum, also belongs to the Graeco-Roman period, is published here for the first time. A comparative study of the three gems and the drawing has lead to a number of new findings, including the re-dating of the Munich gems.

The article describes Church Slavonic loanwords' functioning and use in the lexical-semantic system of the Ukrainian written literary language of the XVI – first half of the XVII century. It discloses the concepts of «Church Slavonic language», «Church Slavonic loanwords». The composition and semantics of Slavonic loanwords in the language of various genres of Ukrainian memos (certificates, court documents, wills, diplomas, descriptions of castles, rounders Hetman of offices, documents of the Church and school fraternities, annals, works of religious polemic and imaginative literature, memos of scientific and educational literature, liturgical books etc.), walked to the source base of «Dictionary of the Ukrainian language of 16 – the first half 17 centuries» and its unique lexical card index are clarified. The study highlights specific features of the investigated borrowings in the Ukrainian language, specified time, set them apart from other words (Latinisms, Grecisms, Polonisms, and the like). These features are most active at the phonetic, word formation, and semantic levels of language. It is established that in the course of the historical development of the Church Slavonic language, some Church Slavonic loanwords, under the influence of the phonetic features of the Ukrainian language (the pronunciation of ancient etymological ы and и as a single sound in the front row and high raise [и]; use e in place of the stressed or unstressed ѣ; pronunciation of ѣ as i «new» ѣ at the place of the etymological e; writing e in place of Proto-Slavic ę; the alternation у/в; sound transformation in the individual prefixes and suffix; the softening of the ц; the transition in unstressed position у – о; loss of primary і; simplification in groups of consonants, etc.), changes in the sound structure of the word. Part of the Church Slavonic words, adapting to the semantic system of the Ukrainian language of 16 – the first half 17 centuries, changed to lexico-semantic level, particularly the expansion or narrowing semantics. Other old Church Slavonic lexemes are components of the diverse lexico-grammatical patterns of collocations and idioms connected with the Church ritual sphere. A special place in it is occupied by educational and methodical literature produced by major music publishers in Moscow and St. Petersburg during their formation and development.The appeal to this topic is connected with the need to create a primary idea of the activities of music publishers for the production of educational materials in the historical dynamics and perspective. This complex process can be perceived as a synthesis of European traditions and Russian experience — a multidimensional multifunctional landscape of the era, illustrative reflection of important events in the cultural life of the country.The specificity of the problem has an impressive demonstration volume. It includes the strategy and tactics of development of Russian music publishing companies, production of educational and scientific-methodical literature by Russian and foreign authors, stages in the development of piano art, increase in the production output, achievements of the Russian piano school and its unique pedagogical experience.“P. Nineteenth-century admission records to the St. John’s General Hospital have recently been made available for analysis. Records are extant from 17 May 1886 to 30 December 1899, and of the 5,995 admissions during this period, it was possible to identify 294 unique male merchant seafarers. Individuals were most frequently admitted due to traumatic conditions, respiratory diseases, and sexually transmitted infections, results which resonate with previous historical studies of seafaring health. Cross-referencing individual seafarer’s hospital admissions with crew list agreements from the Registrar General for Shipping and Seamen allowed for an examination of time spent in port before hospital admission, which provides a unique contribution to the historical literature on the health of the maritime workforce. This research sheds light upon the healthcare experience of merchant seafarers in the key port city of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, emphasizing the value of hospital records in broader studies of occupational risks and hygiene.

Mitau, the former capital of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, became the Courland Governorate centre with the Governor’s residence in a palace on an island formed by the Driksa, the branch of the Lielupe River, and great changes have taken place in this city. Artist Alexander Aleksandrovich Strekavin, who born in Mitau on 17 September 1889, studied art history, read books, investigated documents in the museum, listened to people’s stories and completed materials about events and the development of his native city. His drawings introduce with the new iron bridge for traffic and technical innovations – bicycles, the first car in the Baltics and the first phonograph in Mitau, clothes of citizens during the 19th century and at the beginning 20th century. Since the 1950s, six notebooks in Latvian with memoirs recalling by Aleksander Strekavin and an illustrative appendix – a collection of his drawings “The Atlas of Notes on Ancient Mitau” are in the funds of Jelgava History and Art Museum of Ģederts Eliass. Research object: drawings of artist Alexander Strekavin. Research goal: analysis of changes in Mitau during the 19th century and at the beginning 20th century. Research problem: Strekavin’s drawings stored in the funds of Jelgava History and Art Museum have not been studied. Research novelty: analysis of information on technical innovations included in “The Atlas of Notes on Ancient Mitau”. Research methods: studies of published literature, cartographic materials and archive documents.

Steroid hormones have been in use for more than a half a century as contraceptive agents, and only now are researchers elucidating the biochemical mechanisms of action and non-target effects. Progesterone and synthetic progestins, critical for women's health in the US and internationally, appear to have important effects on immune functioning and other diverse systems. Apart from the contraceptive world is a separate field that is devoted to understanding progesterone in other contexts. Based on research following a development timeline parallel to hormonal contraception, progesterone and 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate are now administered to prevent preterm birth in high-risk pregnant women. Preterm birth researchers are similarly working to determine the precise biochemical actions and immunological effects of progesterone. Progesterone research in both areas could benefit from increased collaboration and bringing these two bodies of literature together. Progesterone, through actions on various hormone receptors, has lifelong importance in different organ systems and researchers have much to learn about this molecule from the combination of existing literatures, and from future studies that build on this combined knowledge base.
