Full textThis thesis is about the different forms of patronage of Anne of Austria in the fields of (1) “representation”, (2) “court”, and (3) “friendship” between 1643, when she took over the regency, and her death in 1666. Accordingly, the research takes a methodical and conceptual approach which reflects in turn the broad notion of the word “patronage” in Early Modern Europe. So, the thesis purpose consists in presenting for the first time at all a detailed study about the patronage system of the queen by evaluating on a grand scale sources and secondary literature. In this way it was possible to modify and to refute to some extent the still existent image of Anne of Austria as a queen who was politically incompetent, totally depending on her prime minister, cardinal Mazarin, and without any influence during her last years. In contrast, Anne of Austria reveals herself as a competent queen and a good tactician who established and maintained a successful and durable patronage system (1) by strengthening her image as an ideal queen, (2) by finding a balance at court between faith and glamour, and (3) by using a rhetoric of friendship to consolidate her clientele relations
Aron, Mélanie. "Les mémoires de Madame de Motteville : du dévouement à la dévotion." Nancy 2, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999NAN21037.
Full textWhen Louis XIII died, Madame de Motteville exiled by Richelieu in 1624, was called back to the Court. She lived the next 23 years at the side of Anne of Austria, and became her confident. During her free time, she wrote down her observations and reflexions. These notes form the basis of her Memories, the definitive version of which was written in 1661. I have chosen to travel down this path, in the steps of the confident, and watch as the Court passes before her eyes : the picture painted by Madame de Motteville offers the reader a pessimistic vision of a world in decline. If the Memories witness her profound attachment to the Crown, they are also the place where her personality is expressed. The writing constitutes an essential element of her existence. The reader travels through an historic biography to a personal story. Neither the life of the Court, neither her writing about it, can make her forget her anxiety about past times. Haunted by nostalgia for paradise lost, she renounces, little by little the world as she turns toward eternal truths. . . Then disappears

Full textThis study is an iconographic’s synthesis of the appartment’s décoration of the queens of France, under the regencies of Marie de’ Medici and Anna of Austria. As the queen, mother and only wife of a king, appartments’themes - in union with the rooms where they take place - are often and naturally link with feminine vocable. Lots of subjects insist on the women’s vertu, her intrinsic qualities (capacities), exalting the queen picture and personality. Another themes, sometimes the same, underline her functions, at the heat of the state : asserting her power and her abilities for governing. As the appartment of king of France’s iconography, this apologitic discourse, offering a lovely and flattering picture of the queen, serve the monarchic propaganda. The queen is compare with the goddess of Peace and wisdom (like Minerve), she is regard as restorer of peace, of cohesion in her city felicity and prosperity. She doesn’t forget her next advisers, on the contrary, a complet room of Anna of Austria summer’s appartment in the Louvre, illustrate the worths of her minister, Mazarin. A large part of the iconography is allowed to religious subjects, whixh show the character (nature) godly and devout of Marie de’ Medici and Anne of Austria. At last, some ornaments, landscapes and grotesques, embellish and complete this decoration

Full textAnne of Austria offers an important part, yet neglected, in the the development of royal iconography in seventeenth century France. Devoided from management of power under the reign of her husband Louis XIII, she is however the subject of many representations. The number of her images increases when she accedes to the responsibilities of the government at the death of the king, in 1643, becoming regent in the name of her minor son, Louis XIV. Beyond its majority in 1651, she maintains herself at a prominent place, until the death of Mazarin in 1661. During these two decades, a deep political crisis in France culminates in the so-called Fronde. In this context, the image of Anne of Austria becomes the instrument of a visual narrative on monarchical authority and for the defense of the royal power. Crossing a large corpus of representations of the regent with textual sources, this thesis analyzes the visual construction of this narrative, and its effects on the evolution of the image of power in France after the reign of Louis XIII. In contemporary legal and symbolic literature, "majesty" is presented as he essential quality of the sovereign and the mark of his identity. It must then be visually translated in a female incarnation, despite the fundamental laws, in particular the Salic law, which however exclude women from power. The abundance of the images collected for this thesis, nearly five hundred items, offers an essential source to understand how the queen was able to overcome this constraint and contribute, by renewing its models, to the representation of the monarchical authority. This thesis allows us to reconsider the relationship between women and power. To analyze these different issues, the thesis is organized in four parts. The first part attempts to understand the image of the reigning queen, analyzing in a first chapter the legal definition of the queen, to show how the legal order determines the symbolic one. One can thus understand how the marriage of the queen in 1615 and her arrival at the court can be apprehended as an "iconographic birth". The second chapter explores the different features of this portrait of the queen, showing that it is at the same time a revelation of personal characteristics of the queen and a reaction to the queen's political and civil situation. The second part raises the question of the means implemented to operate the transformation of this image, which allows the queen to appear as regent of the kingdom. The third chapter analyzes in particular the chronological stages of this transformation, while the fourth chapter studies, from a practical point of view, the "fabrication" of this image. The third part then considers the content of the images, drawing up a three-step analysis of its iconography. The fifth chapter addresses the body of the queen as a support for the moral dimensions of her portrait. The sixth chapter deepens this question in the religious perspective, studying how the regent manages to produce the image of a queen "très chrétienne". The seventh chapter concludes this iconographic analysis by studying the political dimension of Anne of Austria's image. The fourth and last part gives finally an analysis of the way these images "operate". The eighth chapter shows how the situation of the queen's representations in decor is decisive for their interpretation, considering the cases of the royal residences and the private interiors. Finally, the ninth chapter proposes a study of the performance of images, extending the analysis to the public uses of representations of the queen, in monuments or during ceremonies
