Anisimova, Tatiana V. "The 15th-century Synodal Hexameron (Shestodnevets)." Slovene 9, no. 1 (2020): 110–34. http://dx.doi.org/10.31168/2305-6754.2020.9.1.4.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the textual analysis and publication of the short Hexameron, titled Shestodnevets, which became part of the Miscellany from the Synodal collection in the State Historical museum (No. 951). An archaeographical description of the manuscript (dated to around 1460) is given; it is noted that 13 folios from it are now in the Miscellany from the V. M. Undolsky collection (RSL, col. 310, No. 562). The analysis of the Shestodnevets showed that the source for its initial part was the prototype of the Sofiisky chronograph, which had a more elaborate form compared to that conserved in manuscripts. The rest of the text is based on the Palaea Interpretata and “The Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth”, which is a part of another brief chronograph, Parenios. An attempt to trace the history of the spread of “The Word …” in the Old Russian literature revealed its use as an introduction to the illuminated Palaea Interpretata of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the initial part of which is now largely lost. It turned out that a copy of these pages, in addition to two well-known 16th-century copies, is copied from the “Word …” in a manuscript of the Trinity-Sergius monastery, dated to the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century (RSL, сol. 304/I, No. 39). Four more copies of the same text were also identified. A version of the “Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth” is also used in the “Word about the Existence of the Whole World”, where the story of the six days, starting with the narrative of Cain and Abel, is supplemented by the “Speech of the philosopher” from the The Tale of Bygone Years. The Synodal Shestodnevets has textual features of “The Word about the Creation of Heaven and Earth” in the Parenios version, but it also contains individual additional fragments from the Book of Enoch. In conclusion, the importance of the Shestodnevets for our knowledge about the book repertoire and the guiding principles of Old Russian authors working on Palaea compilations in the middle of the XV century is underlined. Another significant result is the acquisition of new data on the content and the terminus ante quem for the Sofiisky chronograph’s archetype, the earliest copy of which dates from the 1530s.

Abstract:
Abstract By drawing on a comprehensive bibliographic census (ISTC) this article offers a mapping of printed medical-scientific production in 15th-century Europe, with an eye to the manuscript tradition, the authorship status, and the use of Latin and vernaculars in a century of transition that was not merely linguistic. It identifies in some titles from the practical medicine category—namely books on materia medica, regimina sanitatis booklets and short medical poems—the crucial contribution of proto-typography to the wider dissemination of medical knowledge. In regard to some long-lived titles (Regimina Sanitatis Salernitana; Il perché by Girolamo Manfredi; Cibaldone), this paper explores the evolution of their material forms in the early modern centuries in the direction of a more enjoyable style that was far from being only professional, while new methodological research paths are suggested. The sheer variety of actual readers is focused in the case of printed herbals and of the Cibaldone. The popularity of such genres is ultimately couched within the lively context of household medicine in the early modern era.

Abstract:
During the Renaissance period, the Medici family has played a fundamental role in encouraging the spread of humanism ideas. As humanist believed, spirit of human is lost during the Middle Ages prior to the Renaissance period due to feudal system. The introduction of such humanism idea is impactful towards the society; however, it is lacking in direct support that promotes such idea. In Florence, the Medici family made huge contributions to allowing the growth of humanism to be shown in works of art that challenges traditional thinking. During the stage where financial power is mostly held by kings and political leaders, the success of the Medici in the Medici bank allows them to support artists who are in need for support. By stabilizing peace in Florence, it provided chances for artists under Medici support to receive a positive environment for art creation. The peaceful Florence also brought in more artists from other places to investigate into the rising humanism possibilities; hence, Florence under Medici control became an important art center.

Abstract:
The article deals with the genealogy of two wealthy noble families of Rusinian origin in Galicia of Ruthenian Voivodeship of the Polish Kingdom in the 15th century (the east of Galicia, now mainly Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine). The rise of the first family is connected with the land grant of 1385, while the other began to rise when its progenitor assumed the position of the Galician judge in the late 14th – early 15th centuries. The author studied the history of these two families in the 15th century, including family ties, land holdings, relations with neighbours. The Svistelnitskies Zheliborskies continued their history after the 15th century. Several members of this family were Galician Orthodox bishops in the 16th–17th centuries. The family tree of the Skomrokhskies-Novitskies died out in the late 15th century for various reasons. The history of the two families suggests that historians erroneously exaggerated the size of land wealth and the number of Galician boyars in the 13th – 14th centuries and their descendants – Polish gentry of Ruthenian origin. There were no more than a hundred local boyars in the second half of the 14th century. In Galicia of the 15th century, only two families of Rusinian origin can be qualified as large landowners and five or six families – as medium (wealthy) landowners. The vast majority of Rusinian gentry in the 15th century owned one or two small villages or even part of the village.

Abstract:
In this article, Murad-Nâme’s music is examined by Bedr-i Dilşâd. The book is the translation and commentary of Kabus-nâme which it is written by Keykavus b. İskender in 1082. But many parts in Murad-Nâme are written to be expanded, including music part as well. When Murad-Nâme is examined in the 34th music section; It is seen that the “esoteric symbolism-based makam model” of the 15th Century represents theoretical understanding. This classification -this classification makes the model in question different from the other and next models- is made in the form “makam-âvâzeşûbe- terkib”. The concept of “makam” has a fundamental role in this model. And also there has been another important feature of this model that these concepts are associated with horoscopes, planets, four elements and time, with regard to the esoteric nature of model. It is seen that the music section in Murad-Nâme reflects the most important features that describe the “esoteric symbolism-based makam model” in terms of stylipment. The book is included twelve makam, seven âvâze, four şûbe and fiftyfour terkib names, also their identification has been made. Besides these in the book musical science, musician and singing rules and the effects of music on listeners etc. are also included. In this article, the 15th century style in Turkish music is examined through the example of Murad-Nâme based on a hermeneutic approach its relationship with esoteric symbolism-based makam model. The theoretical approach in the Music section of the book was examined by creating the tables to better view the whole. In some tables, comparisons with Rûhperver -is a 17th century book written in the same style- in order to see the relationship between the next period of the 15th century; the similarities and differences in the 15th-century definitions of the makam, the âvâze, the şûbe and the terkib is tried to be shown.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of Novgorodian architecture in the middle of the 15th to the first quarter of the 16th century. In 1433, one of the key events in the history of Novgorodian architecture took place — the German and local builders constructed the Faceted Palace commissioned by the archbishop Eufimiy II on the Vladychny Dvor. The article focuses on two interconnected problems: 1) did the German master builders continue to work on the Archbishop’s Court after 1433; 2) did the Faceted Palace influence the architecture of Novgorod in the middle of the 15th to the first quarter of the 16th century? An analysis of available written sources and the results of research bear no evidence of the presence of the German builders in Novgorod later than 1433. Several new features in Novgorod edifices in the middle — second half of the 15th century should be interpreted as traces of the influence the Faceted Palace had upon the later Novgorodian architecture. Most likely the German Builders returned overseas upon completing the Archbishop’s Palace and never came back to Rus. Overall, the 15th century Brick Gothic architecture influenced the Novgorod architecture of the middle — second half of the 15th century: new construction and decorative features in one way or another are connected with the architecture of the Faceted Palace that appeared in the edifices of the 1440–1460s. However, not all the striking features of the outstanding Palace of the Archbishop are reflected in buildings of the middle — second half of the 15th century.

It is predicated that Islam, which penetrated in Lombok, was brought by Muslim merchants in the 15th century. However, according to the local sources, Islam was brought to Lombok by Sunan Prapen from Java, and not in 15th, but in 16th. Islam had been developed within the center of Islamic Kingdoms, established less than two centuries. The kingdoms had become the ruling powers. During the great periods of the Islamic kingdoms, Islam spread out massively and became the official religion of the states. Employing historical approach with three phases: heuristic, analytic or interpretative and historiography, this research discusses the penetration method of Islam in Lombok in 15th century and how it had been developing since its arrival to the 19th century.

According to 15th to 18th-century written sources, priests-vaidiluciai, successors to the servants of the cult of the pre-Christian religion, performed various duties, including therapeutic activities. Descriptions in sources indicate that the nature of the therapeutic assistance they provided varied according to the magic activity they performed. The healing activities of vaidiluciai have not been systematically studied. This article extends the analysis of data on the therapeutic activities of different groups of vaidiluciai in 15th to 18th-century written folk sources, and identifies the reflection of these activities in 15th to 18th-century folk medicine based on archive records and healing faith records. The research helps to trace the meaning and origin of some therapeutic methods of folk medicine, and the possible development of traditions.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of punctuation in German incunabula is often described as arbitrary, irregular, and unsystematic (cf. Masalon 2014: 54–56). This concerns the inventory, frequency, and function of punctuation marks as well as pragmatic aspects such as how typesetters treated punctuation in their respective target texts. In this paper, punctuation is not seen as an independent linguistic subsystem, but as a means of text segmentation that – along with other measures (e. g. capital letters, pilcrows, and white space) – was used to structure a text with respect to its formal appearance, helping the reader to decode information. This case study is based on a corpus of German pamphlets written by the Bohemian astrologer Wenzel Faber and printed annually beginning in 1481 at various print shops, principally in Leipzig and Nuremberg. The analysis finds significant changes in the editions before and after 1490. These changes include an increasing consistency in the intensity of text segmentation, and a use of capital letters and punctuation marks developed from a polyfunctional to a monofunctional approach. Finally, different types of text segmentation are proposed, each characterized by a specific relationship between its frequency and its function. Despite this overall tendency, one must still take into account that typesetters followed individual punctuation practices in their search for suitable forms of text segmentation.

Abstract:
Judeo-Arabic sources from the 15th and 16th centuries are of great interest for research into subordinate syntax, as they are written in a repertoire that echoes the Classical Arabic elements of Medieval Judeo-Arabic as much as the colloquial forms of Late Judeo-Arabic. The most interesting phenomena concern the adverbial clauses, which show a great variation of adverbial connectives. It is also notable that compounds of prepositions and relativizers or complementizers appear to have become very popular, whereas few of the inherited non-prepositional Classical Arabic adverbial connectives occur. This article also raises the possibility that adverbial clauses may have only developed in the course of the codification of the Semitic languages, and perhaps of languages in general. Relative and complement clauses in the 15th- and 16th-century sources are less conspicuous, but in relative clauses, the form ʾan, homophonous with the complementizer and originating from constructions using thetanwīn, may occur as relativizer after indefinite antecedent. A noteworthy point regarding complement clauses is the lack of asyndetical constructions as compared with earlier Judeo-Arabic documentary material.

Abstract:
AbstractArmenian sources from the 15th century provide distinctive viewpoints on the history of the Safaviyyih Sufi order before the foundation of the Safavid Empire. The history of T‘ovma of Metsop‘ suggests an earlier intermediate step in the militarization of the order, which scholars have typically viewed as an unprecedented development beginning after 1447, and ascribes to the Safavi shaykh the idea of taxing non-Muslims to encourage conversion to Islam. A second Armenian text, a previously unknown colophon, describes Haydar's attack on Shirvan in 1488 and the suffering of the Muslim and Christian sedentary population, as well as an episode of interreligious mockery. It is probably the earliest extant source to identify the Qizilbash by their distinctive red hats. Together, these sources suggest ways in which the Safaviyyih order's development was conditioned by the multireligious environment. They are examples of the value of non-Muslim sources even for late medieval Islamic history.
