Abstract:
<p>Much has been researched about Graciliano Ramos’work. Vidas secas had numerous studies devoted to its analysis. The position of the criticism about the brutalized characters has changed. The first reviews dealt with the animalization of Fabiano and his family, seeing them as non psychologically complex After this first interpretation, criticism proposed a reinterpretation of Graciliano’s stylistic resources, through which is possible to comprehend the characters in a different way. This study proposes a second look at two distinct moments of the novel in which Fabiano has contact with the State: through his confrontation with the yellow soldier in chapters Cadeia and O soldado amarelo. The questions and perceptions of Fabiano, brought to light by Ramos’ free indirect discourse help us to reflect on his psychological complexity denied by early reviews. In this paper, we investigate how the historical moment passes through the narrative, which is used as raw material for the character’s constitution.</p>

Abstract:
Conto. Crítica. Resistência. Círculos de leitura. LITERATURE AS AN ACT OF RESISTANCE IN “O SAGRADO PÃO DOS FILHOS”, BY CONCEIÇÃO EVARISTO Abstract: Conceição Evaristo is an Afro-Brazilian writer of great relevance in the current Brazilian scenario. She has contributed for building a resistance literature focused on ethno-racial and gender issues, in an intersectional movement which also includes the class category. Her literary production, in general, is guided by her experience as a black woman, submitted to various subaltern conditions in Brazil and by evoking the memory of her African ancestors as a way of constructing a counter-discourse about the black struggle in the country. This paper presents a comprehension discourse of the short story “O sagrado pão dos filhos”, from the book Histórias de leves enganos e parecenças, which resulted from our reading and interpretation of this text and from the experience of a shared reading in a reading circle at Memórias de Baobá, an even held in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. Literary criticism, Bakhtinian approach of language as well as French discourse analysis were used as basis for the literary analysis of the short story. “O sagrado pão dos filhos” was perceived in its complex aesthetic texture revealing how literature builds the human, setting up a decolonial gesture, echoing silent voices that are subjacent to the racial process of economic and symbolic subalternization. Keywords: Afro-Brazilian literature. Short story. Critical. Resistance. Reading circles.

Abstract:
This study discusses the history of the development of the Pamatang Purba Bolon House as one of the seven traditional local government centers in the form of a kingdom that ever existed in Simalungun. This study uses the historical method which consists of four steps, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The main source of this research material was obtained by conducting direct interviews with the manager of Rumah Bolon and the Chairperson of the Simalungun Museum Foundation, which is a representative representing the descendants of the Ancient King. While secondary sources are obtained from written documents, unpublished personal archives, journals, books about Simalungun and other scientific research. Research findings show that the establishment of the Pamatang Purba Bolon House is closely related to the history of the founding of the Ancient Kingdom which was founded by Tuan Raendan (Pangultop) around 1515 from Pakpak. Bolon's house has survived to this day because it survived the burning carried out by the Liar Tiger Front during the social revolution in Simalungun in 1946. Bolon's house is in very poor condition due to the lack of budget for its management and operations.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years, theological interpretation of Christian Scripture has often been distinguished by its wholesale antipathy toward history and/or to historical criticism. Working with a typology of different forms of "historical criticism," this essay urges (1) that historical criticism understood as reconstruction of "what really happened" and/or historical criticism that assumes the necessary segregation of "facts" from "faith" is inimical to theological interpretation; (2) that this form of historical criticism is increasingly difficult to support in light of contemporary work in the philosophy of history; and (3) that contemporary theological interpretation is dependent on expressions of historical criticism concerned with the historical situation within which the biblical materials were generated, including the sociocultural conventions they take for granted.

Kristiansen, Anne James. "Giovanni Bellini's "The Blood of the Redeemer" : a public image for a private patron." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28094.

Full text
Abstract:
Giovanni Bellini's The Blood of the Redeemer has been traditionally approached in terms of its style and iconography. The two separate lines of investigation have shown the painting to be a complex image that participates in the traditions of both private and public Christ imagery. This thesis will focus on the painting with regard to both the function that it served and the Venetian context in which it was produced. The purpose of the study will be to show the work as a private devotional painting in which the public Christ type has been adapted to fulfill the needs of contemporary Venetian meditations. Chapter One will deal with the two distinct ways in which the work has been discussed and the particular problems that exist in approaching suffering Christ imagery in terms of context. Chapter Two will focus on the development and function of the full-length bleeding Christ in the private and public spheres within the context of Christ-centred piety in the fifteenth century. Chapter Three will discuss Venetian devotions to Christ with particular regard to the impact of historical events. Chapter Four will focus on the adaptation of the public Christ type in The Blood of the Redeemer. The appropriation will be discussed in terms of the liturgical resonances that are brought to the image and with regard to the use of public types in Bellini's other private Christ images. In addition, the importance of northern graphics will be examined as well as the civic associations with which the Christ type had become imbued in northern Italy. The location of the image within a particular social strata will be effected through considering the way in which it addresses contemporary intellectual issues in Venice.

Pham, Van Khanh. "Theatricality in Tintoretto's religious paintings." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=22618.

Full text
Abstract:
Tintoretto, one of the great Venetian masters of the sixteenth century, is renowned for his compositional innovations. The painter also worked as a stage and costume designer for the Compagnie della Calza. As a result, he selected and combined elements of other disciplines in his pictures.
This thesis focuses on the fusion of the arts in Tintoretto's imagery. A comprehensive analysis of this interdisciplinary aspect reveals the subtlety of Tintoretto's creative mind. The challenge is to discover Tintoretto as a stage designer who conceived pictures as theatrical performances. Instead of the traditional preparatory sketch, he built a miniature stage in order to visualize the scene in tangible forms existing in light and space. The design of the setting, the gestural choreography of his personages and the distribution of lighting were analysed and then translated into painted illusion. With this unusual methodology, Tintoretto invented forceful mise-en-scenes which induce the spectator to perceive the imaginary as real. A substantial knowledge of stagecraft also enabled him to bring to vibrant life the dramatic episodes of the Bible on canvas. Through such artfully constructed theatrical illusion, Tintoretto not only re-creates a vision for his audience, but above all, conveys the depth of his spiritual experience.

Tintoretto's four-painting Passion cycle in the Sala dell'Albergo of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice has generated dramatic and affective responses from artists and critics since its completion in the late 1560s. While scholars have addressed the cycle's formal qualities that stimulate such responses, the context surrounding the cycle has not been fully explored. The city was a refuge for reformers and the printing center for potentially heretical writing in the sixteenth century. Tintoretto maintained relationships to members of the reformist poligrafi, and the Passion cycle responds to the mystical theologies propagated in widely disseminated works from Ignatius of Loyola's officially sanctioned treatise, Spiritual Exercises, to the more controversial work of Don Benedetto and Marcantonio Flaminio, the Beneficio di Cristo. This thesis constructs a strong relationship between Tintoretto' s work in the Sala dell'Albergo and contemporary mystical and evangelical reformative theology and activity in the city.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the foundations of the complex and multifaceted work of Leonardo da Vinci as a whole. What underscores the universality of his research and transcends the artificial divisions of his vast body of work into modern categories of specialization, is the operation of analogy, which is grounded in a mimetic imagination. Leonardo's search is ultimately one of understanding the underlying causes that animate the universe and through analogy, his work and his world hold together. Central to my investigation of the continuity of Leonardo's analogical mode of thinking and making, are questions pertaining to the body, architecture and representation. I put forth that only by appreciating the analogical nature of Leonardo's (re)search, can one access the meaning and value of his efforts and contribution.

Gesme, Janet Leigh. "Martin Luther's "Two Kingdoms Theory": An Analysis through the Lens of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Religionless Christianity." PDXScholar, 2013. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1508.

Full text
Abstract:
The following work is an analysis of Martin Luther's Two Kingdoms Theory. This influential and controversial theory was introduced in his 1523 treatise, Von weltlicher Obrigkeit--Secular Authority. Although this document was written almost 500 years ago and takes its cue from the writings of St. Augustine and the Bible, it continued to have a significant effect on German society in both the political and religious realm well into the present day. Based on an analysis of the text and on the culture and literature that led Luther to write Von weltlicher Obrigkeit, this thesis evaluates various interpretations and applications of the Two Kingdoms Theory. The specific effects of Luther's teaching during the Nazi era are examined politically and theologically. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Religionsloses Christentum--Religionless Christianity and Martin Luther's Zwei-Reiche-Lehre--Two Kingdoms Theory will be compared to demonstrate that they illuminate the same truth from different vantage points: neither people nor their rules are viable substitutes for God. A brief introduction explains the means of analysis used in this thesis, which is based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's call for a new religionless language as described in letters written during his imprisonment by the Nazi regime.

Abstract:

Rosshandler, Michelle. "A historiography of idealized portraits of women in Renaissance Italy : the idea of beauty in Titian's La Bella." Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=83147.

Full text
Abstract:
Renaissance art historians concur that women were characteristically depicted as ideal types in Renaissance portraiture. Nonetheless, the historiography of portraits of women in Renaissance Italy reveals generational shifts between scholars. Male scholars writing in the nineteenth-century to the mid twentieth-century applied formalist and cultural historical methodologies. Recent scholars raise issues that were previously neglected, such as social historical and feminist concerns. Following this rationale, I argue that the changing interests of scholars have altered the interpretations of portraits of Renaissance women. Moreover, this historical difference is split along gender lines in the historiography of Titian's La Bella. A critical review of the literature on this painting shows that male scholars, such as John Pope-Hennessey, Harold E. Wethey, and Charles Hope define the work in formal terms, such as "charming" and "pretty," whereas female scholars such as Elizabeth Cropper, Patricia Simons and Rona Goffen concur the work to be a synecdoche for the beauty of painting itself. A historiography of Titian as a portrait painter confirms that recent scholars have shifted focus from formal studies to an assessment of the social context, conditions of patronage and the feminist issues surrounding the artist's portraits.

Full text
Abstract:
The expressive systems in architecture consists of two components: the system of forms and the system of meanings, these systems are linked together by unwritten rules, which are a matrix of correlations / implications that determine any meanings associated with any forms. The designer remains unsure of the possible interpretations of his design, because of the variation in the nature of meaning, discovered by the recipient, and this stems from the variation of reliance on the theory of interpretation in this regard. Many studies of architectural semiology indicate some of these theories; Classical theory believes in the natural meaning, which influenced by form's geometry, Pragmatic theory believes in the common meaning, which stems from the use of form within different contexts and according to social custom. The research attempts to explore the aspects of interpretation adopted by two critics, in order to determine the theory adopted by them, so the designer will be aware to the nature and type of meaning comprehended by viewers. The results showed the adoption of common and inclusive meanings, also showed the variation in the role of architectural Expressions in confirming or multiplying the meaning, influenced by contexts and signal types. The conclusion emphasized the importance of historical references, stylistic trend, and spatial contexts in form interpretation.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of source criticism in etymological research. It is widely known that the main sources for the early history of toponyms in the Carpathian Basin are the charters created in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, because these official documents contained a large number of vernacular proper names embedded in the Latin text. However, it is important to mention that the medieval charters were produced by the chancery and places of authentication along specific principles and needs. I argue that this circumstance must always be considered during the interpretation of the data. I will show some examples illustrating that – in certain cases – we have to take into account the nature of the sources in the reconstruction of the genesis of place names. My goal is to offer a brief outline of this issue through my own investigations.

Abstract:
Context: Cardioembolic events are the main cause of simultaneous anterior and posterior circulation stroke. Anatomical variants of the circle of Willis represent another rare mecanism. Persistent trigeminal artery is a carotid–vertebrobasilar anastomosis related to an increased risk of aneurysms, vascular malformations and stroke. Case report: A 67-year-old diabetic man was brought to the emergency department with a history of sudden onset of left hemiparesis. Neurologic finginds showed a hemiparesis, hemianesthesia and heminegligence (all left sided), right hemiataxia and a dysarthria. Brain Magnetic Resonance study revealed a isquemic stroke in right middle cerebral artery, right posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and bilateral superior cerebellar arteries (SUCA). Computed tomography angiography showed a right internal carotid artery oclusion and a persistent trigeminal artery. Causitive Classification System (CCS) revealed a large-vessel atherosclerotic stroke. A non-habitual simultaneous affection of PCA and SUCA resulted from a carotid artery embolization associated with anterior and posterior territories anostomosis by the persistent trigeminal artery. Secondary prevention consisted of aspirin 100mg/day and cardiovascular risk factor control. The patient remained free from others cardiovascular events, in rehabilitation, at the moment, in category 3 from the Ranking Modified Scale. Conclusions: The presence of a persistent trigeminal artery, in the context of a internal carotid oclusion, can chance our stroke-mecanism interpretation. Simultaneous anterior and posterior circulation stroke are compatible with large-vessel aterosclerotic disease.

Abstract:
Introduction: The knowledge about the impact of biological and socio- environmental factors on motor development is essential to generate subsidies to planning strategies to promote and prevent neuropsychomotor delays. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of nutritional factors on the neuropsychomotor development of children aged 13 to 30 months, through the correlation between neuropsychomotor development assessed by the Denver II test and the nutritional status calculated by the z score of BMI-for-age (z-BMI/A) and weight-for-height (z-W/H). Methods: This study was carried out with nine children regularly enrolled in the Braziliand public education system. Results: Based on the final interpretation of the Denver II test, a prevalence of 33% of children with atypical performance (2 male and 1 female) was found. Regarding to z-BMI/A, one child was characterized as overweight (1 male) and three children were at risk of being overweight (1 male and 2 female), based on z-W/H three children were at risk of being overweight (2 male and 1 female). The Pearson correlation test showed that there was a strong association between changes in the Denver II and the nutritional status. Conclusion: The findings of the present study show that children classified as overweight and at risk of being overweight are more likely to be at risk for development, based on Denver test. Therefore, taking together the above findings, the present study reinforces the importance of evaluating and monitoring longitudinally both nutritional and motor development, highlighting the importance of multiprofessional performance and early approach.

Abstract:
Introduction: In the current context of the 21st century, it has become necessary to incorporate new tools to clinical practice, especially those that allow communication at the nationally or internationally remotely, enabling the interruption of diagnostic doubts, joint interpretation of imaging exams, meeting of various protocols and updates in the management of diseases. When there is an application, which brings together specialists in neurology, psychiatry and the like, an ethical, safe and promising environment will be established. Objectives: Reduce diagnostic errors and promote the creation of a virtual Community active disseminator of knowledge in neurology. Design and setting: Quantitative observational study based on the results of a online form applied with professionals from the Uniceuma institution, in force in São Luís, located in the state of Maranhão (Brazil), in the year 2021. Methods: This is a quantitative survey applied to a non-sample probabilistic. The instrument for data collection was Microsoft Forms, with results applied to a Microsoft Excell spreadsheet. Results: Of the 22 selected medical professionals, 14 were neurologists, 3 were psychiatrists and 5 were general practitioners. Among all, 86% of them demonstrated a high degree of of interest in the application, with the 14 neurologists included; all stated that the platform would reduce diagnostic errors and 17 of them would use it in clinical practice. Conclusions: Therefore, there is an urgent need to promote an online teaching tool, responsible and accessible, via IOS and Android, which makes therapeutic conduct feasible, diagnostic thinking and update the medical Community.

Aravot, Iris. "An Attempt at Making Urban Design Principles Explicit." In 1995 ACSA International Conference. ACSA Press, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.intl.1995.42.

Abstract:
Since its rise as an autonomous field in the seventies, Urban Design has been a conglomerate of diverse concepts and value outlooks. The present approach, which is an a posteriori propositional expression of applications in actual practice and education, presents both theory and method by means of ten points. The approach is basically generated by formal considerations, thus originating in and focussing on aspects which cannot be expressed through theory and methods of other disciplines. It starts with systematic, conventional and objective studies which are then connected to a system of manipulations – the rules of game – which emphasize interpretation and are clarified by narrative and formal metaphors. The ‘rules of game’ set a framework of no a priori preferred contents, which is then applied according to local characteristics, needs and potentials. This conceptual – interpretative framework imposes a structural, consistent and hierarchical system on the factual data, so as to assure the realization of two apparently opposed values: (1) unity and phenomenological qualities and (2) free development and unfolding of the design that .The propositional expression of the approach aims at its exposure to explicit evaluation and criticism.
