Abstract:
Double charge exchange (DCE) reactions could provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-β decay. To achieve this goal, a detailed description of the reaction mechanism is mandatory. This requires the full characterization of the initial and final-state interactions, which are poorly known for many of the projectile-target systems involved in future DCE studies. Among these, we intend to study the 20Ne + 130Te and 18O + 116Sn systems at 15.3 AMeV, which are particularly relevant due to their connection with the 130Te→130Xe and 116Cd→116Sn double-β decays. We measure the elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions and compare them with theoretical calculations performed in the optical model, one-step distorted wave Born approximation, and coupled-channel approaches using the São Paulo double-folding optical potential. A good description of the experimental data in the whole explored range of transferred momenta is obtained provided that couplings with the 21+ states of the projectile and target are explicitly included within the coupled-channel approach. These results are relevant also in the analysis of other quasi-elastic reaction channels in these systems, in which the same couplings should be included.

The emergence of nuclear collectivity near doubly-magic 132Sn was explored along the stable, eveneven 124−130Te isotopes. Preliminary measurements of the B(E2; 41+ → 21+) transition strengths are reported from Coulomb excitation experiments primarily aimed at measuring the g factors of the 41+ states. Isotopically enriched Te targets were excited by 198-205 MeV 58Ni beams. A comparison of transition strengths obtained is made to large-scale shell-model calculations with successes and limitations discussed.

All existing positive results on two-neutrino double beta decay and two-neutrino double electron capture in different nuclei have been analyzed. Weighted average and recommended half-life values for 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 96Zr, 100Mo, 100Mo - 100Ru (01+), 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te, 136Xe, 150Nd, 150Nd - 150Sm (01+), 238U, 78Kr, 124Xe and 130Ba have been obtained. Given the measured half-life values, effective nuclear matrix elements for all these transitions were calculated.

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a lepton number violating process which is not allowed in the Standard Model (SM) of the electroweak interaction. The paper presents a brief overview of the results of some current projects, such as GERDA, MAJORANA, KamLAND-Zen, EXO-200, CUORE and SuperNEMO, and plans for creating a new generation experiments.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay is a predicted beyond Standard Model process that could clarify some of the not yet known neutrino properties, such as the mass scale, the mass hierarchy, and its nature as a Dirac or Majorana fermion. Should this transition be observed, there are still challenges in understanding the underlying contributing mechanisms. We perform a detailed shell model investigation of several beyond Standard Model mechanisms that consider the existence of right-handed currents. Our analysis presents different venues that can be used to identify the dominant mechanisms for nuclei of experimental interest in the mass A~130 region (124Sn, 130Te, and 136Xe). It requires accurate knowledge of nine nuclear matrix elements that we calculate in addition to the associated energy-dependent phase space factors.

Abstract The CROSS experiment is proposing to use a new technology of surface sensitive bolometers for low-background neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Efficient rejection of surface α and β events will allow to reach background in the region of interest below than 10−4 cnts/keV/kg/yr. The isotopes of interest, which are 130Te and 100Mo, are investigated with TeO2 and Li2MoO4 bolometers. The surface sensitivity is achieved thanks to the evaporation of thin metallic film on the crystal surface that modifies the pulse shape of near-surface events. An investigation of various pulse shape parameters was performed. The analysis shows that one of the best parameters for discrimination is the integrated area of the raw signal both for TeO2 and Li2MoO4 with Pd-Al (10 nm - 100 nm) bi-layer.

In this paper, we extend our previous realistic shell-model study of Gamow-Teller strengths and double-β decay properties for nuclei around 132Sn to lighter mass nuclei. The effective shell-model Hamiltonian and transition operators are microscopically derived by way of many-body perturbation theory, without resorting to empirical parameters. Our main aim is to further check the reliability of our approach and verify its stability in other mass regions. Calculated energy spectra as well as electric-quadrupole and β-decay properties are presented for 76Ge and 82Se and compared with the experimental data, together with some results for 130Te and 136Xe already reported in our previous paper. Finally, some preliminary results of nuclear matrix elements responsible for the neutrinoless double beta decay, calculated by using the bare operator, are shown.

We study the two-neutrino double-βdecay in76Ge,116Cd,128Te,130Te, and150Nd, as well as the two Gamow-Teller branches that connect the double-βdecay partners with the states in the intermediate nuclei. We use a theoretical microscopic approach based on a deformed self-consistent mean field with Skyrme interactions including pairing and spin-isospin residual forces, which are treated in a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. We compare our results for Gamow-Teller strength distributions with experimental information obtained from charge-exchange reactions. We also compare our results for the two-neutrino double-βdecay nuclear matrix elements with those extracted from the measured half-lives. Both single-state and low-lying-state dominance hypotheses are analyzed theoretically and experimentally making use of recent data from charge-exchange reactions andβdecay of the intermediate nuclei.

Abstract:
This contribution reports on a shell-model study of nuclei in the 132Sn region employing a realistic effective interaction derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential renormalized through the use of the Vlow−k approach. We shall focus on some selected results for nuclei with a few valence particles and/or holes with respect to 132Sn, namely Sn isotopes with N > 82 and 130Te, which have, in part, been discussed in previous papers. Results are compared with experiments, and predictions that may provide guidance to future experiments are also discussed. It is the aim of this contribution to underline the importance of studying 132Sn neighbours to acquire a deep understanding of nuclear structure, that may be very useful also in other physics fields, and to show that the realistic shell model is a very effective tool to conduct these studies.

Abstract CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is a ton-scale experiment located at LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso) in Italy whose goal is to search for neutrino-less double beta decay (0υββ) in 130Te. CUORE exploits an array of 988 TeO2 crystals operated as Low-Temperature Detectors (LTDs) at 10 mK. These detectors show an excellent energy resolution, making the experiment one of the most competitive 0υββ searches in the world. In this scenario, the proposed research deals with the generation of synthetic (mock) data for the study of the CUORE detector response function. The production of synthetic data is a new tool we designed to consider all the missing information from a Montecarlo simulation: the detector non-idealities, as well as noise and pulse shape. The mock data are processed with the CUORE official analysis software, allowing us the evaluation of its impact on the final results.

Abstract CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is a tonne-scale experiment located at the LNGS with the main scientific goal of searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130Te. The detector consists of TeO2 crystals operated as cryogenic calorimeters. The use of natural tellurium allows us to search for other isotopes rare decays. The neutrinoless positron emitting electron capture (0υECβ +) of 120Te (natural abundance 0.09(1)%) has a clear signature from the 511-keV annihilation γ rays. We present an analysis of this process based on a new algorithm to perform the simultaneous spectral fit over five selected decay scenarios. Each scenario is characterized by a set of crystals simultaneously interested by a detectable energy release. We describe the background structure modeling and tests of linearity we performed on the fit algorithm. We finally present the limit setting sensitivity and the next steps of this study, including systematics accounting.

Precise tellurium (Te) isotope ratio measurement using mass spectrometry is a challenging task for many decades. In this paper, Te isotope ratio measurements using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC–ICP–MS) in terrestrial Te standards have been reported. Newly developed Faraday cup with 1012 Ω resistor is used to measure low abundance 120Te, whereas the 1011 Ω resistor is used to measure other Te isotopes. The relative standard deviation obtained for Te isotope ratio measurement by Faraday cups of 120Te/128Te [0.002907(05)], 122Te/128Te [0.079646(10)], 123Te/128Te [0.027850(07)], 125Te/128Te [0.221988(09)], 126Te/128Te [0.592202(20)], and 130Te/128Te [1.076277(30)] were 0.140%, 0.014%, 0.026%, 0.005%, 0.004%, and 0.004%, respectively. The measured isotope ratio results are compared with previous results obtained by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), negative thermal ionization mass spectrometry (N–TIMS), and MC–ICP–MS, showing an improvement in the precision about one order of magnitude for 120Te/128Te ratio. The present study shows better precision for Te isotope ratios compared to earlier studies.

Abstract The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) in 130Te. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO2 calorimeters operated at ∼10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy-dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors.

AbstractThe possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 19371. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter–antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis2, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. Here we show results from the search for 0νββ decay of 130Te, using the latest advanced cryogenic calorimeters with the CUORE experiment3. CUORE, operating just 10 millikelvin above absolute zero, has pushed the state of the art on three frontiers: the sheer mass held at such ultralow temperatures, operational longevity, and the low levels of ionizing radiation emanating from the cryogenic infrastructure. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a lower bound of the process half-life as 2.2 × 1025 years at a 90 per cent credibility interval. We discuss potential applications of the advances made with CUORE to other fields such as direct dark matter, neutrino and nuclear physics searches and large-scale quantum computing, which can benefit from sustained operation of large payloads in a low-radioactivity, ultralow-temperature cryogenic environment.

Saat ini metode yang sering digunakan dalam pembuatan radioiodida-131 (131I) bebas pengemban (carrier-free) yaitu radioisotop tanpa tambahan pengemban (non-carrier-added radioisotopes) adalah menggunakan metode pemisahan distilasi basah atau distilasi kering. Kelemahan metode distilasi diantaranya membutuhkan peralatan yang rumit dan kemungkinan besar terjadi kontaminasi akibat penguapan serta pelepasan 131I. Untuk mengatasi kelemahan metode distilasi dan supaya pengerjaannya sederhana, dikembangkan pemisahan berbasis kolom berisi resin penukar ion (Amberlit). Metode teknik pengocokan terhadap perilaku pertukaran radioiodida-131 dan telurium-130 dalam resin penukar ion di media larutan asam dan basa serta parameter-parameter yang berpengaruh terhadap proses pemisahan seperti kapsitas tukar ion, koefisien distribusi (Kd), waktu kontak dan massa resin Amberlit akan dipelajari. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapatkan nilai kapasitas tukar ion 1,15 meq/gram berat basah resin, Kd 130Te dan 131I pada pelarut NaOH 2 M dengan waktu kontak 20 menit adalah 47 mL/g dan 113 mL/g. Persen yield pemisahan 131I diperoleh sebesar 60,70 ± 0,09 % dengan menggunakan resin amberlit sebanyak 2 gram. Radioisotop dalam bentuk kimia Na131I memiliki kemurnian radiokimia sebesar 95,27 ± 0,06 % dan kemurnian radionuklida sebesar 99,5 ± 0,02 %. Hasil uji kualitas Na131I berupa larutan jernih, pH 7, kadar Pb<40 ppm, kadar Te<10 µg/mL, kadar reduktor 0,2844 mg/0,1 mL Na131I.

Abstract:
This review aims to cover the history and recent developments on cryogenic bolometers for neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν2β) searches. A 0ν2β decay observation would confirm the total lepton charge non-conservation, which is related to a global U(1)LC symmetry. This discovery would also provide essential information on neutrino masses and nature, opening the door to new physics beyond the Standard Model. The bolometric technology shows good prospects for future ton-scale experiments that aim to fully investigate the inverted ordering region of neutrino masses. The big advantage of bolometers is the high energy resolution and the possibility of particle identification, as well as various methods of additional background rejection. The CUORE experiment has proved the feasibility of ton-scale cryogenic experiments, setting the most stringent limit on 130Te 0ν2β decay. Two CUPID demonstrators (CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo) have set the most stringent limits on 82Se and 100Mo isotopes, respectively, with compatibly low exposures. Several experiments are developing new methods to improve the background in the region of interest with bolometric detectors. CUPID and AMoRE experiments aim to cover the inverted hierarchy region, using scintillating bolometers with hundreds of kg of 100Mo. We review all of these efforts here, with a focus on the different types of radioactive background and the measures put in place to mitigate them.
