Abstract:
Double charge exchange (DCE) reactions could provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-β decay. To achieve this goal, a detailed description of the reaction mechanism is mandatory. This requires the full characterization of the initial and final-state interactions, which are poorly known for many of the projectile-target systems involved in future DCE studies. Among these, we intend to study the 20Ne + 130Te and 18O + 116Sn systems at 15.3 AMeV, which are particularly relevant due to their connection with the 130Te→130Xe and 116Cd→116Sn double-β decays. We measure the elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions and compare them with theoretical calculations performed in the optical model, one-step distorted wave Born approximation, and coupled-channel approaches using the São Paulo double-folding optical potential. A good description of the experimental data in the whole explored range of transferred momenta is obtained provided that couplings with the 21+ states of the projectile and target are explicitly included within the coupled-channel approach. These results are relevant also in the analysis of other quasi-elastic reaction channels in these systems, in which the same couplings should be included.

Abstract:
The emergence of nuclear collectivity near doubly-magic 132Sn was explored along the stable, eveneven 124−130Te isotopes. Preliminary measurements of the B(E2; 41+ → 21+) transition strengths are reported from Coulomb excitation experiments primarily aimed at measuring the g factors of the 41+ states. Isotopically enriched Te targets were excited by 198-205 MeV 58Ni beams. A comparison of transition strengths obtained is made to large-scale shell-model calculations with successes and limitations discussed.

Abstract:
CUORE-0 was a bolometric experiment, operated between 2013 and 2015, whose main scientific goal was the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) in 130Te. The detector consisted of 52 TeO2 crystals, used both as a detector and a source for the isotope under investigation. The crystals were arranged in a single tower and contained in a cryostat capable of reaching the temperature of 10 mK. Thanks to the low background of the experiment, searches for rare events other than 0vbb are possible. In this thesis I describe the methods used to search for double-beta decay of 130Te on the excited states of 130Xe. This decay is characterized by the emission of two electrons followed by a photon cascade, giving it a very characteristic signature. I studied two distinct processes, the SM-allowed two neutrino double-beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay on the excited states. In order to properly detect the signatures of these decays a dedicated optimization of the analysis procedure, involving both real and simulated data, was required. The two decays are not observed in CUORE-0, but a lower limit on the half-life of both processes can be set: for the neutrinoless decay, T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 yr, and for the two neutrino decay T1/2 > 1.85x10^23. The result from the two neutrino channel from CUORE-0 was a clear improvement over the previously existing half-life limit, set by the Cuoricino experiment at 1.30x#10^23 years. The combination of the results from CUORE-0 and Cuoricino yields even better limits: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 years for the neutrinoless channel and T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 for the two neutrino channel. These results represent the most stringent limits currently available for both processes.

Abstract:
The CUORE experiment is the largest bolometric array ever built with the main goal of searching for the lepton number violating neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals allows us to look for coincident signals between detectors. The latest results on neutrino-less double beta decay search of 130Te to the ground 0+1 state of 130Xe and first 0+2 excited state will be presented and discussed. The presence of de-excitation gammas in the final state helps reducing the background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The Standard Model 2νββ decay channel of the same isotope on the 0+2 excited state of 130Xe will be investigated as well. No evidence for any of the mentioned decay modes was observed and a Bayesian upper bound at 90 % C.I. on the decay rate will be presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Heavy ion transfer reactions play an important role for the definition of the reaction mechanism that describes the evolution from the quasi-elastic to the more complex deep-inelastic regime. At energies close to the Coulomb barrier these processes are mainly governed by optimum Q-value considerations and nuclear form factors. As a consequence, for nuclei close to the stability line the dominant channels are the neutron pick-up and the proton stripping. The use of neutron-rich projectiles is expected to open the possibility to populate neutron stripping and proton pick-up paths. This corresponds, for the heavy partner, to the population in the “south-east” direction of the nuclear chart, leading to the neutron-rich heavy region, like that below 208Pb or in the actinides and trans-actinides, which can be hardly accessed by fragmentation or fission reactions. Multinucleon transfer may represent a suitable mechanism to approach these neutron-rich areas. In this work we studied the multinucleon transfer reaction 197Au+130Te at Elab = 1.07 GeV in inverse kinematics to extract absolute yields for neutron and proton transfer channels in the vicinity of 132Sn and, at the same time, to obtain information on the associated heavy partner. We adopted for the first time a method which makes use of a particle-particle coincidence in which one of the two devices is a high-resolution mass spectrometer, PRISMA, which can completely identify the light partner of the reaction in A, Z and Q value; the coincident detector works as a second arm of PRISMA and is placed at the kinematically correlated angle for the detection of the heavy partner with lower resolution but comparable efficiency. The obtained yields can then be compared with theoretical calculations which predict, for this system, the population of neutron stripping and proton pick-up channels, in turn leading to the production of neutron-rich nuclei approaching the region close to 208Pb. This thesis presents the results of this experiment. Through an event-by-event trajectory reconstruction in PRISMA we could achieve enough mass resolution to distinguish final isotopes and extract the corresponding yields for neutron transfer channels. For proton ones, with about ten times less cross sections, we could extract the mass-integrated yields corresponding to each nuclear charge. As theoretically predicted, the neutron stripping and proton pick-up channels have been identified and their yields compared with the calculations performed with the GRAZING model for transfer reactions. For neutron transfer the comparison showed a quite good agreement; for proton transfer the model is able to reproduce quite well the stripping channels but largely underestimates the pick-up ones. After verifying the correct functioning of the kinematic coincidence, we reconstructed the mass of the heavy partner in the second arm by assuming a binary character of the reaction. From the correlation between the mass of the Te isotopes identified in PRISMA and the mass distributions of the Au ions detected in the second arm, we could assess that the reaction maintains its (quasi) binary character up to the transfer of 3-4 neutrons. This result is consistent with the behaviour of the total kinetic energy loss distributions, analyzed and compared, on the same footing, with and without using the information of the coincident second arm. The yields of the Au mass distributions correlated to each Te isotope in PRISMA were compared with GRAZING calculations. The trend of the yields corresponding to the population of neutron-rich isotopes of the heavy partners well agrees with the GRAZING predictions. The limited effect of the evaporation on the final yields when a low bombarding energy is employed has been argued from the comparison between experimental widths of the mass distributions and Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract:
A systematic study of the change in proton single-particle occupancies in two neutrinoless double beta decay candidates, 130Te to 130Xe and 136Xe to 136Ba, has been performed. Final states in 129Sb, 129I, 135I and 135Cs have been populated using the (d,3He) single proton removal reaction. The deuterons were accelerated to 101 MeV using the coupled azimuthally varying field and Ring cyclotrons at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, University of Osaka. The outgoing ejectiles were momentum analysed using the Grand Raiden magnetic spectrometer. Absolute cross sections were measured for states up to 7 MeV in excitation. Transferred angular momenta were identified through a comparison of angular distributions with those calculated using the distorted-wave Born approximation. Spectroscopic factors were extracted from the experimental cross sections. In addition to the 0v2B decay candidates the reaction was also performed on 128Te, 132Xe, 134Xe and 138Ba as a consistency check. The occupancies of the nuclei were determined from the spectroscopic factors, the reaction model was normalised using a common normalisation factor across all targets. The change in occupancies between the 0v2B decay candidates and their daughters were then determined. The change in occupancies were then compared with those calculated by interacting shell model, interacting boson model and quasiparticle random phase approximation. This comparison showed that whilst the three theories were qualitatively able to reproduce the change in occupancies, quantitatively there are significant discrepancies. These are the same models that are used to determine the nuclear matrix elements governing the rate of 0v2B decay.

Abstract:
The discovery of neutrino masses through the observation of oscillations has boosted the importance of neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). This rare process is a direct probe of Beyond the Standard Model Physics, since it violates the lepton number by two units. Furthermore, 0νββ allows us to investigate the Dirac/Majorana nature of the neutrino and to get information on the neutrino absolute mass scale and ordering. This thesis work is developed in the framework of the CUORE experiment. CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is a tonne-scale bolometric experiment whose main goal is the search for the 0νββ of 130Te. The experiment is currently taking data at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). In the first part of the thesis, the Physics of interest for CUORE and the experimental aspects are introduced. A general overview of the current knowledge in neutrino physics is presented. 0νββ process is introduced within the particle physics scenario in which the Majorana mass of ordinary neutrinos dominate the decay rate. Then, the experimental challenge the observation of double beta decay represents is discussed. After a general overview of the bolometric technique for rare events search, a general description of the CUORE experiment is outlined. Details on the main components of the CUORE detector are provided, focusing on the stringent requirements in terms of background and noise reduction they must satisfy. Finally, we illustrate the calibration system of the CUORE detector, comparing two alternative approaches employed in terms of compliance with the cryogenic infrastructure and performance. The second part of the thesis focuses on the data processing chain. The most important stages of the low level data analysis include the evaluation of signal amplitude, the energy calibration and the identification of coincident events between the detectors. We present a preliminary analysis of the improvements we obtain in the background reconstruction with the optimum trigger and discuss the performance of the external detector calibration system. Finally, we describe the steps to characterise our detector in terms of efficiency of the selection cuts and energy response function. The core of the thesis focuses on two physical analysis, the search for 0νββ decay of 130Te with a total TeO2 exposure of 372.5 kg · yr, and the search for neutrinoless double emitting electron capture (0νECβ+) decay of 120Te with 355.7 kg · yr TeO2 exposure. The data selection and the fit strategy for the search of 0νββ decay in 130Te are discussed in detail. An interpretation of the final result on the 0νββ decay rate estimate is given, with an overview of the major sources of uncertainty on the final results. Then, we present the analysis of a specific double beta decay mode of 120Te. We start introducing the motivations behind a growing interest for the (neutrinoless) double beta decay modes different from β−β−, where electrons are emitted. Then, we describe the physical process analyzed in this dissertation, pointing out the requirements we set to identify candidate signal events. We discuss our data selection, specifying differences with respect to the 0νββ decay analysis of 130Te and we illustrate the statistical approach. Given the complexity of this analysis a preliminary result on the 120Te rate for 0νECβ+ is presented, and the future developments of this study are also introduced.

Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: We investigate the nuclei 20Ne, 44Ti, 94Mo, 136Te and 212Po using a model of an α-cluster orbiting a closed shell core. A purely phenomenological cluster-core potential is found to provide a successful description of the spectra, B(E2↓) transition strengths, and α-decay rates of the low-lying positive parity states of these nuclei. We then use the same potential as the real part of an optical model potential to describe the α elastic scattering by 16O, 40Ca, 90Zr and 208Pb. The experimental differential cross-section data are reasonably well reproduced with the imaginary potential depth as the only free parameter. The special case of the 8Be system is also analysed.

Abstract:
The 130th anniversary of Stefan Zweig’s birthday in 2011 triggered the latest “rediscovery” of the Austrian writer in Europe and North America, manifesting itself in various new editions and translations, exhibitions, graphic novels, radio plays, and movies inspired by his life and work, such as Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel or Maria Schrader’s Vor der Morgenröte. At the same heated debates about the writer’s literary merit flared up again. This introduction provides an overview of the international reception history of Zweig, whose works have been translated into more than sixty languages since the 1920s, while causing relentless aversion and controversy among scholars and critics. This chapter also explains why the Chinese reception with its wealth of unexplored material spanning almost the whole twentieth century serves as the ideal case study not only to re-read Zweig’s work but also to rethink our understanding of cross-cultural literary connections as complex “global systems of cultural transfer.”

Abstract:
Following the 27th Tripartite Annual Executive Meeting, the FAO Programme Committee in its 130th session, March 2021, requested the joint development, by the Tripartite (FAO/WHO/WOAH) and others, of a strategy and action plan to prevent future zoonotic pandemics through the One Health approach. The One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA) is intended to guide the four organizations of the Quadripartite to work together on One Health with the aim of supporting their Members to build One Health capacities. It provides a framework for action and proposes a set of activities that the four organizations can offer together to enable countries to advance and scale up One Health in managing human, animal, plant and environment health threats. The framework uses a One Health approach to strengthen collaboration, communication, advocacy, and coordination equally across all sectors responsible for addressing health concerns at the human-animal-plant-environment interface.
