Abstract:
Wireless communication systems have undergone fast development in recent years. Based on GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specified the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard to cope with rapidly increasing demands, including capacity, coverage, and data rate. To achieve this goal, several key techniques have been adopted by LTE, such as Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO), Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM), and heterogeneous network (HetNet). However, there are some inherent drawbacks regarding these techniques. Direct conversion architecture is adopted to provide a simple, low cost transmitter solution. The problem of I/Q imbalance arises due to the imperfection of circuit components; the orthogonality of OFDM is vulnerable to carrier frequency offset (CFO) and sampling frequency offset (SFO). The doubly selective channel can also severely deteriorate the receiver performance. In addition, the deployment of Heterogeneous Network (HetNet), which permits the co-existence of macro and pico cells, incurs inter-cell interference for cell edge users. The impact of these factors then results in significant degradation in relation to system performance. This dissertation aims to investigate the key techniques which can be used to mitigate the above problems. First, I/Q imbalance for the wideband transmitter is studied and a self-IQ-demodulation based compensation scheme for frequency-dependent (FD) I/Q imbalance is proposed. This combats the FD I/Q imbalance by using the internal diode of the transmitter and a specially designed test signal without any external calibration instruments or internal low-IF feedback path. The instrument test results show that the proposed scheme can enhance signal quality by 10 dB in terms of image rejection ratio (IRR). In addition to the I/Q imbalance, the system suffers from CFO, SFO and frequency-time selective channel. To mitigate this, a hybrid optimum OFDM receiver with decision feedback equalizer (DFE) to cope with the CFO, SFO and doubly selective channel. The algorithm firstly estimates the CFO and channel frequency response (CFR) in the coarse estimation, with the help of hybrid classical timing and frequency synchronization algorithms. Afterwards, a pilot-aided polynomial interpolation channel estimation, combined with a low complexity DFE scheme, based on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criteria, is developed to alleviate the impact of the residual SFO, CFO, and Doppler effect. A subspace-based signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation algorithm is proposed to estimate the SNR in the doubly selective channel. This provides prior knowledge for MMSE-DFE and automatic modulation and coding (AMC). Simulation results show that this proposed estimation algorithm significantly improves the system performance. In order to speed up algorithm verification process, an FPGA based co-simulation is developed. Inter-cell interference caused by the co-existence of macro and pico cells has a big impact on system performance. Although an almost blank subframe (ABS) is proposed to mitigate this problem, the residual control signal in the ABS still inevitably causes interference. Hence, a cell-specific reference signal (CRS) interference cancellation algorithm, utilizing the information in the ABS, is proposed. First, the timing and carrier frequency offset of the interference signal is compensated by utilizing the cross-correlation properties of the synchronization signal. Afterwards, the reference signal is generated locally and channel response is estimated by making use of channel statistics. Then, the interference signal is reconstructed based on the previous estimate of the channel, timing and carrier frequency offset. The interference is mitigated by subtracting the estimation of the interference signal and LLR puncturing. The block error rate (BLER) performance of the signal is notably improved by this algorithm, according to the simulation results of different channel scenarios. The proposed techniques provide low cost, low complexity solutions for LTE and beyond systems. The simulation and measurements show good overall system performance can be achieved.

Abstract:
This study investigates linguistic, perceptual, and pedagogical change (LPPC) in a short-term, study abroad English immersion program. It proposes the LPPC Interactive Model of second language acquisition based on Gardner's 1985 socioeducational model and Woods' 1996 beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge (BAK) structure. The framework is applied in a cross-cultural context, highlighting participants in the 1993 Camosun Osaka Aoyama English Language Institute involving Japanese English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students from Aoyama Junior College in Osaka, Japan, and non-Japanese ESL teachers at Camosun College and Canada's University of Victoria in British Columbia. The study examined the definition of teacher achievement; distinctions between language activation and language acquisition in the short-term, study abroad context; development of the constructs student BAK+, teacher BAK+, and class BAK+ to describe interactions in "class fit"; and the influence of temporal parameters on linguistic, perceptual, and pedagogical change. Data from teacher and student surveys and interviews suggest that change occurs in each of the linguistic, perceptual, and pedagogical dimensions and support constructs proposed for the model.

Abstract:
Increased partisan apathy, affective polarization, and purposeful selection of homogenous political discussion groups are of growing concern as politics within the United States becomes more contentious. While previous work has considered when political discussions occur, if discussions are deliberative, and whether discussions affect democratic outcomes, this study focuses on the process someone undergoes when determining whether to participate in a political discussion. This paper examines political communication apprehension by considering how personality predispositions and uncertainty reduction influence the expectancy-value judgments made when determining if participating in a certain political discussion situation is worth the cost. Factors of political communication apprehension were determined through an exploratory factor analysis of a batter of questions designed to capture elements of political communication apprehension. Findings indicate that even if people are not very attached to their political parties, their political communication apprehension is largely informed by expectancy value judgements based on information they have learned from the political world.

Abstract:
Motivating the political will necessary for fair and ambitious climate change policies is significantly complicated by the rise of populism. Right-wing populist communication targets civil servants and intellectuals as conspirators furthering a climate agenda for their own self-interest. Yet, despite the real world implications of populist communication, more work is needed to both (1) understand the presence of populist frames in media communication on climate change and (2) untangle the relationships between the far-right and diverse forms of climate skepticism. Completing a content analysis of newspaper opinion pieces and Fox News programing between 2008 and 2020, I find that populist skeptic frames are an important part of media communication on climate change in both the Wall Street Journal and Fox News. Additionally, I find that populist skeptic frames most commonly use process skeptic claims, leveraging conspiratorial language to describe collusion between the government and scientists to falsify the severity of climate change and control the public for their own gain. Using a survey experiment, I find that higher populist attitudes are negatively associated with both belief in climate change and support for climate mitigation policies among Republicans. Conversely, I do not find a significant effect of exposure to a populist process skeptic frame, prompting the need for more work on the connections between populist skeptic framing and climate change attitudes.

Abstract:

The current state of the art in biopotential recordings rely on radiative electromagnetic (EM) fields. In such transmissions, only a small fraction of this energy is received since the EM fields are widely radiated resulting in lossy inefficient systems. Using the body as a communication medium (similar to a ’wire’) allows for the containment of the energy within the body, yielding order(s) of magnitude lower energy than radiative EM communication. The first part of this work introduces Animal Body Communication for untethered rodent biopotential recording and for the first time this work develops the theory and models for animal body communication circuitry and channel loss. In vivo experimental analysis proves that ABC successfully transmits acquired electrocardiogram (EKG) signals through the body with correlation greater than 99% when compared to traditional wireless communication modalities, with a 50x reduction in power consumption. The second part of this work focusses on the analysis and design of an Electro-Quasistatic Human Body Communication (EQS-HBC) system for simultaneous sensing and transmission of biopotential signals. In this work, detailed analysis on the system level interaction between the sensing and transmitting circuitry is studied and a design to enable simultaneous sensing and transmission is proposed. Experimental analysis was performed to understand the interaction between the Right Leg-Drive circuitry and the HBC transmission along with the effect of the ADC quantization on signal quality. Finally, experimental trials proves that EKG signals can be transmitted through the body with greater than 96% correlation when compared to Bluetooth systems at extremely low powers.

Abstract:
The innovations in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the recent decades have given rise to large open-source datasets. MRI affords researchers the ability to look at both structure and function of the human brain. This dissertation will make use of one of these large open-source datasets, the Human Connectome Project (HCP), to study the structural and functional connectivity in the brain.
Communication processes within the human brain at different cognitive states are neither well understood nor completely characterized. We assess communication processes in the human connectome using ant colony-inspired cooperative learning algorithm, starting from a source with no a priori information about the network topology, and cooperatively searching for the target through a pheromone-inspired model. This framework relies on two parameters, namely pheromone and edge perception, to define the cognizance and subsequent behaviour of the ants on the network and the communication processes happening between source and target. Simulations with different configurations allow the identification of path-ensembles that are involved in the communication between node pairs. In order to assess the different communication regimes displayed on the simulations and their associations with functional connectivity, we introduce two network measurements, effective path-length and arrival rate. These measurements are tested as individual and combined descriptors of functional connectivity during different tasks. Finally, different communication regimes are found in different specialized functional networks. This framework may be used as a test-bed for different communication regimes on top of an underlying topology.
The assessment of brain fingerprints has emerged in the recent years as an important tool to study individual differences. Studies so far have mainly focused on connectivity fingerprints between different brain scans of the same individual. We extend the concept of brain connectivity fingerprints beyond test/retest and assess fingerprint gradients in young adults by developing an extension of the differential identifiability framework. To do so, we look at the similarity between not only the multiple scans of an individual (subject fingerprint), but also between the scans of monozygotic and dizygotic twins (twin fingerprint). We have carried out this analysis on the 8 fMRI conditions present in the Human Connectome Project -- Young Adult dataset, which we processed into functional connectomes (FCs) and time series parcellated according to the Schaefer Atlas scheme, which has multiple levels of resolution. Our differential identifiability results show that the fingerprint gradients based on genetic and environmental similarities are indeed present when comparing FCs for all parcellations and fMRI conditions. Importantly, only when assessing optimally reconstructed FCs, we fully uncover fingerprints present in higher resolution atlases. We also study the effect of scanning length on subject fingerprint of resting-state FCs to analyze the effect of scanning length and parcellation. In the pursuit of open science, we have also made available the processed and parcellated FCs and time series for all conditions for ~1200 subjects part of the HCP-YA dataset to the scientific community.
Lastly, we have estimated the effect of genetics and environment on the original and optimally reconstructed FC with an ACE model.

Abstract:
Wireless powered communication (WPC) is an emerging paradigm where wireless devices are powered over the air while exchanging information with them. This technology is attractive for various wireless applications, including classical radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems, implantable sensors, environmental sensing as found in agriculture and forestry, and simultaneous charging and telemetry communications for electric vehicles. While recent studies have shown that inductive coupling provides a more energy-efficient and robust channel for short and middle-range wireless transmission, most of the previous analyses on WPC have been limited to far-field transmission models. To this end, this work provides a comprehensive framework to design and analyze WPC over inductively coupled circuits. We consider three problems, namely, wireless power transfer (WPT), simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), and wireless powered communication network (WPCN) using multiple coupled coils. Each configuration is modeled by an abstract circuit model in which various effects, including mutual coupling and parasitic elements, are captured by a small number of measurable parameters. This technique allows us to not only eliminate the need for solving the circuit but also apply well-known signal processing techniques such as beamforming and channel estimation to inductively coupled models. For each of the three models, we derive the properties of the optimal source signal. In addition, we propose methods to design the load impedance of WPCN by taking into account the nonlinear effects due to impedance mismatches in the circuits.

Abstract:
Given the increasing importance of mobile data access, extending broadband wireless access have become a global grand challenge. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have been introduced to resolve these issues which motivate us to have further investigation. In this paper, the first two work assuming a quantized-and-forward WSN. We first develop a rate adaptive integer forcing source coding (RAIF) scheme to enhance the system throughput by assigning optimal quantization rate to each sensor optimally. Then, we are interested in developing an supervised online technique for solving classification problems. In order to enhance the classification performance, we developed this technique by jointly training the decision function that determines/estimates class label, quantizers across all sensors, and reliability of sensors such that M' most reliable sensors are enabled. Finally, we develop an idea to provide a folded low-resolution ADC array architecture that can utilize any of the widely published centralized folded ADC (FADC) implementation by placing the centralized FADC branches at different antenna elements in a millimeter wave (mmWave) system. With adding a simple analog shift and modulo operations prior to the sign quantizer, we show that the multiple low-resolution ADCs across the array elements can be properly designed such that they can be combined into an effective high-resolution ADC with excellent performance characteristics.

The implications of non-Gaussian interference for various communication systemsare explored. The focus is on the Kappa distribution, Generalized Gaussian distribu-tions, and the distribution of the interference in molecular communication systems.A review of how dynamic systems that are not in equilibrium are modeled by theKappa distribution and how this distribution models interference in HF communica-tions systems at sunrise is provided. The channel model, bit error rate for single andmultiple antennas, channel capacity, and polar code performance are shown.

Next, a review of the Generalized Gaussian distribution that has been found tomodel the interference resulting from surface activities is provided. This modeling isextended to find the secrecy capacity so that information cannot be obtained by theeavesdropper.

Finally, future nanomachnines are examined. The vulnerability to a receptorantagonist of a ligand-based molecule receiver is explored. These effects are consideredto be interference as in other wireless systems and the damage to signal reception isquantified.

Abstract:
The work involves two new method implementation and application in the Quantum transport community for nano-scale electronic devices.

First method: Ab-initio Tight-Binding(TB)
As the surfacing of novel 2D materials, layers can be stacked freely on top of each other bound by Van der Waals force with atomic precision. New devices created with unique characteristics will need the theoretical guidance. The empirical tight-binding method is known to have difficulty accurately representing Hamiltonian of the 2D materials. Maximally localized Wannier function(MLWF) constructed directly from ab-initio calculation is an efficient and accurate method for basis construction. Together with NEGF, device calculation can be conducted. The implementation of MLWF in NEMO5 and the application on 2D MOS structure to demystify interlayer coupling are addressed.
Second method: Büttiker-probe Recombination/Generation(RG) method:

The non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF) method is capable of nanodevice performance predictions including coherent and incoherent effects. To treat incoherent scattering, carrier generation and recombination is computationally very expensive. In this work, the numerically efficient Büttiker-probe model is expanded to cover recombination and generation effects in addition to various incoherent scattering processes. The capability of the new method to predict nanodevices is exemplified with quantum well III-N light-emitting diodes and photo-detector. Comparison is made with the state of art drift-diffusion method. Agreements are found to justify the method and disagreements are identified attributing to quantum effects.

The two menthod are individually developed and utilized together to study BP/MoS2 interface. In this vertical 2D device, anti-ambipolar(AAP) IV curve has been identified experimentally with different explanation in the current literature. An atomistic simulation is performed with basis generated from density functional theory. Recombination process is included and is able to explain the experiment findings and to provide insights into 2D interface devices.

Abstract:

Listening (Janusik, 2002; Miller, 2018; Wolvin & Coakley, 1996) and eating disorders (EDs; National Centre for Eating Disorders (NCFED), 2018) are often not taught within schools, especially among adolescents. To address this, a school-based brief motivational interviewing (MI) intervention on listening when talking about EDs was created, implemented, and evaluated among adolescents (n = 260) from two middle schools within the Midwestern part of the United States. Specifically, School 1 (n = 100), and School 2 (n = 160) and three teachers (i.e., Teacher 1, Teacher 2, Teacher 3) allowed the researcher to present and collect data. In other words, three total teachers between the two schools, and one teacher, Teacher 1 (n = 100), was from School 1, and the other two teachers, Teacher 2 (n = 120) and Teacher 3 (n = 40) were from School 2. Participants were randomly placed into either the 1) the EDs listening intervention (education-plus) with an MI component (n = 6 classes) or 2) an education-plus Q&A intervention (n = 7 classes). All the participants were involved in the guest lecture and the pre-test and post-test survey, but data was only saved and analyzed from participants that had guardians/parents who consented (n = 75). The methodology for this dissertation project was a 2 (pre/post, unmatched) X 2 (condition) subject’s design. This dissertation project had two independent variables: (1) experimental condition (e.g., education plus MI and education plus Q&A), and (2) time (e.g., pre and post). This dissertation project had five dependent variables: (1) knowledge of listening, (2) knowledge of EDs, (3) listening self-efficacy, (4) knowledge of OARS, and (5) knowledge of the righting reflex. This dissertation project also had the random factor of schools (e.g., School 1 (A) and School 2 (B), and the fixed factor of gender identity (e.g., male and female). The results revealed a promise of efficacy and increased knowledge regarding EDs and aspects of listening, specifically through MI (e.g., OARS). Other areas of knowledge improved but not significantly. In other words, there were no significant differences in knowledge gains between MI and Q&A, but MI compared to Q&A showed a more extensive influence on self-efficacy. The main limitation of this study was the limited guardian/parental consent, resulting in a small sample size.

Abstract:

Nursing is one of the most important professions in the United States but it has historically endured high levels of shortage and turnover (Apker, Propp, & Ford, 2009; Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). A nurse’s organizational climate and culture have been shown to impact a number of job outcomes including intention to leave the organization (Aiken & Patrician, 2000), and therefore is of interest to both scholars and practitioners alike. One way to understand the context in which nurses work is through organizational identification because people make sense of their own identities in part through the organizations to which they belong (Kuhn & Nelson, 2002). However, because individuals have various identities which can reinforce but at times conflict with each other (Scott et al., 1999) and the strength of these identities can dictate outcomes such as performance (Trybou, Gemmel, Pauwels, Henninck, & Clays, 2013), it is necessary to explore how nurses connect to different identities and social collectives (e.g., team, organization, and occupation/profession) within their work. Further, these connections with the multiplicities of identifications may help explain the decisions that guide nurses’ career trajectories as well as how the perceived identity of a nurse guides individuals to choose a career in nursing. This project seeks to understand how nurses talk about their jobs and how communicating with other nurses influences their career trajectory and decision to stay in or leave their organization or the nursing profession altogether.

This project draws upon both social identity theory and self-categorization theory to help explain how nurses communicate and situate themselves among others in their workplaces. Social identity theory and self-categorization theory are suited for this study’s social constructionist approach and the topic of this research because they explain how the strength and multiplicities of identification within an organization are constructed and shaped by communication with others. Data collection methods for this study consist of in-depth interviews with nurses of specific licensures, posts collected online from a nurse discussion forum, and a questionnaire of nurse forum participants. This study applies a mixed methods approach consisting of qualitative and quantitative analyses. In doing so, this project contributes in several ways including extending our understanding of (1) the connections between the multiplicities of identification; (2) how nurses construct meaning in their jobs to guide career decisions; (3) the nature of nurses’ interactions in online spaces; (4) nurse career decisions; and (5) nurses’ perceptions of the nursing profession before entering the profession.

Abstract:
The availability of feedback from the receiver to the transmitter in a communication system can play a significant role. In this dissertation, our focus is specifically on binary or one-bit feedback. First, we study the problem of successive beam alignment for millimeter-wave channels where the receiver sends back only one-bit of information per beam sounding. The sparse nature of the channel allows us to interpret channel sounding as a form of questioning. By posing the alignment problem as a questioning strategy, we describe adaptive (closed-loop) and non-adaptive (open-loop) channel sounding techniques which are robust to erroneous feedback signals caused by noisy quantization. In the second part, we tightly characterize the capacity for two binary stochastic-adversarial mixed noise channels. Specifically, the transmitter (Alice) intends to convey a message to the receiver (Bob) over a binary symmetric channel (BSC) or a binary erasure channel (BEC) in the presence of an adversary (Calvin) who injects additional noise at the channel's input subject to a budget constraint. Calvin is online or causal in that at any point during the transmission, he can infer the bits being sent by Alice and those being received by Bob via a feedback link. Finally in the third part, we study the applicability of binary feedback for encoding and propose the framework of linearly adapting block feedback codes. We also prove a new result for Reed-Muller (RM) codes to demonstrate how an uncoded system can mimic a RM code under this framework, against remarkably large feedback delays.

This thesis research was motivated by the need for increasing speech transmission rates through a phonemic-based tactile speech communication device named TAPS (TActile Phonemic Sleeve). The device consists of a 4-by-6 tactor array worn on
the forearm that delivers vibrotactile patterns corresponding to English phonemes. Three studies that proceeded this thesis evaluated a coding strategy that mapped 39 English phonemes into vibrotactile patterns. This thesis corresponds to a continuation of the project with improvements summarized in two parts. First, a design and implementation of a training framework based on theories of second language acquisition and game-based learning is developed. A role playing game named Haptos was designed to implement this framework. A pilot study using the first version of the game showed that two participants were able to master a list of 52 words within 45 minutes of game play. Second, an improved set of haptic codes was designed. The design was based on the statistics of spoken English and included an additional set of codes that abbreviate the most frequently co-occurring phonemes in duration. The new set included 39 English phonemes and 10 additional abbreviated symbols. The new codes represent a 24 to 46% increase in word presentation rates. A second version of the Haptos game was implemented to test the new 49 codes in a learning curriculum distributed over multiple days. Eight participants learned the new codes within 6 hours of training and obtained an average score of 84.44% in symbol identification tests with error rates per haptic symbol below 18%. The results demonstrate the feasibility of employing the new codes for future work where the ability to receive longer sequences of phonemes corresponding to phrases and sentences will be trained and tested.

Abstract:
Social capital through connections in networks has been argued to be important for startup enterprises. Founder human capital qualities like education, experience, skills have also been shown to be important predictors of startup success. However, does founder social capital matter for startup success beyond founder human capital? To answer this question, this project draws from the decision-making literature and uses five decision strategies to explore how founder human capital and social capital are associated with investment funds raised by startup companies.

Two studies were conducted. The first study investigated if a decision strategy that looks at founder social capital better predicts which company raises more investment funds than a decision strategy that only uses founder human capital. The second study investigated if actual investors and entrepreneurs, of varying expertise levels, integrate founder social capital variables while making investment decisions.

Both studies found that number of LinkedIn connections of founders of a company was the best predictor of investment funds raised by the company. The first study showed that decision strategies that use social capital cues are similar in predicting successful companies compared to strategies that use human capital cues. The next study showed that, contrary to our expectations, decision strategies that use social capital cues better predict investor choices than strategies that use only human capital cues. It was expected that models that used human capital cues would be better predictors of investor choice behavior than social capital cues. Therefore, the two studies show that founder social capital is associated with investment funds raised by a startup company and investors do take founder social capital into consideration while deciding which startup company to invest in. In doing so, the studies establish the importance of founder social capital in the entrepreneurial context.

Abstract:
The impact of athlete activism online remains understudied in academic scholarship. To gain a better understanding for fan response to athlete activism online, this study examines the patterns in perception and response among sports fans with respect to politically-charged content posted online by professional athletes. The purpose of this study is to use this understanding of fan response to help athletes and their representatives manage fan reaction to athletes’ politically-charged content. By examining fan response to politically-charged content, this study suggests principles for eliciting positive impact, fostering open discourse, and promoting awareness through social media. Patterns in perception and response among sports fans with respect to politically-charged content posted online by professional athletes were examined through in-depth interviews conducted with sports fans between the ages of 18 and 30 who follow the profiles of professional athletes on social media. An understanding of the potential benefits and drawbacks of athletes’ use of social media for social movements has been gained through an analysis of the emergent themes among perception and response patterns revealed by study participants. The emergent themes of this study inform recommendations for professional athletes posting politically-charged content online. The findings of this study suggest that athletes who post politically-charged content online should do so with their goals and audience in mind. Knowing their goals as well as their audience grants athletes the ability to frame their content accordingly, rendering them more likely to receive positive responses to the politically-charged content they post. Based on the findings of this study, athletes who frame politically-charged content as a narrative highlighting their lived experience and employing appeals to emotion and humor yield the most positive responses from otherwise uninterested or hostile fans. The insights gained from this study stand to fill the gap in existing literature surrounding athlete activism online.

Abstract:
Network Coding is a critical technique when designing next-generation network systems, since the use of network coding can significantly improve the throughput and performance (delay/reliability) of the system. In the traditional design paradigm without network coding, different information flows are transported in a similar way like commodity flows such that the flows are kept separated while being forwarded in the network. However, network coding allows nodes in the network to not only forward the packet but also process the incoming information messages with the goal of either improving the throughput, reducing delay, or increasing the reliability. Specifically, network coding is a critical tool when designing absolute Shannon-capacity-achieving schemes for various broadcasting and multi-casting applications. In this thesis, we study the optimal network schemes for some applications with less restrictive network models. A common component of the models/approaches is how to use network coding to take advantage of a broadcast communication channel.

In the first part of the thesis, we consider the system of one server transmitting K information flows, one for each of K users (destinations), through a broadcast packet erasure channels with ACK/NACK. The capacity region of 1-to-K broadcast packet erasure channels with ACK/NACK is known for some scenarios, e.g., K<=3, etc. However, existing achievability schemes with network coding either require knowing the target rate in advance, and/or have a complicated description of the achievable rate region that is difficult to prove whether it matches the capacity or not. In this part, we propose a new network coding protocol with the following features: (i) Its achievable rate region is identical to the capacity region for all the scenarios in which the capacity is known; (ii) Its achievable rate region is much more tractable and has been used to derive new capacity rate vectors; (iii) It employs sequential encoding that naturally handles dynamic packet arrivals; (iv) It automatically adapts to unknown packet arrival rates; (v) It is based on GF(q) with q>=K. Numerically, for K=4, it admits an average control overhead 1.1% (assuming each packet has 1000 bytes), average encoding memory usage 48.5 packets, and average per-packet delay 513.6 time slots, when operating at 95% of the capacity.

In the second part, we focus on the coded caching system of one server and K users, each user k has cache memory size Mk and demand a file among the N files currently stored at server. The coded caching system consists of two phases: Phase 1, the placement phase: Each user accesses the N files and fills its cache memory during off-peak hours; and Phase 2, the delivery phase: During the peak hours, each user submits his/her own file request and the server broadcasts a set of packet simultaneously to K users with the goal of successfully delivering the desired packets to each user. Due to the high complexity of coded caching problem with heterogeneous file size and heterogeneous cache memory size for arbitrary N and K, prior works focus on solving the optimal worst-case rate with homogeneous file size and mostly focus on designing order-optimal coded caching schemes with user-homogeneous file popularity that attain the lower bound within a constant factor. In this part, we derive the average rate capacity for microscopic 2-user/2-file (N=K=2) coded caching problem with heterogeneous files size, cache memory size, and user-dependent heterogeneous file popularity. The study will shed some further insights on the complexity and optimal scheme design of general coded caching problem with full heterogeneity.

In the third part, we further study the coded caching system of one server, K= 2 users, and N>=2 files and focus on the user-dependent file popularity of the two users. In order to approach the exactly optimal uniform average rate of the system, we simplify the file demand popularity to binary outputs, i.e., each user either has no interest (with probability 0) or positive uniform interest (with a constant probability) to each of the N file. Under this model, the file popularity of each user is characterized by his/her file demand set of positive interest in the N files. Specifically, we analyze the case of two user (K=2). We show the exact capacity results of one overlapped file of the two file demand sets for arbitrary N and two overlapped files of the two file demand sets for N = 3. To investigate the performance of large overlapped files we also present the average rate capacity under the constraint of selfish and uncoded prefetching with explicit prefetching schemes that achieve those capacities. All the results allow for arbitrary (and not necessarily identical) users' cache capacities and number of files in each file demand set.

Abstract:
Social media is impacting the practice of public relations inmany different ways, but the focus of this dissertation is on the power of big data from social media to identify and assess the relationship that stakeholders have with the organization. Social media analytics have tended to measure reactions to messages, rather than the strength of the relationship, even though public relations is responsible for building strong relationships with the organization’s stakeholders. Yet, social media provides insight into the conversations that stakeholders have with other stakeholders about the organization and thus can reveal insight into the quality of the relationship they have with the organization.

This dissertation takes a networked approach to understandthe strength of the relationship that the organization has with its stakeholders, meaning it acknowledges that the relationships two entities have with each other are influenced by the relationships those entities have with others in common. In this case, the relationship that a stakeholder has with the organizationis influenced by the relationship the stakeholder has with other stakeholders. Thus, one way to study the relationship that a stakeholder has with the organization is to look at the conversation and the postings on social media among the various stakeholders. The ultimate aim of the dissertation is to show how the relationship can be assessed, so the organization can create strategies that develop mutually beneficial relationships over time.

The context for the study is based on two major events where companies deliberately gather together their stakeholders to interact in person and onsocial media about issues and products related to the organization’sfuture. The first event is Adobe Creative Max, which Adobe hosts each year for creative professionals. The second context for the study is Dreamforce, which is hosted by Salesforce.com and includes so many attendees that the company has to bring in cruise ships to dock in the San Francisco Bay during the event since all the hotels in the area sell out far in advance. These two events provide a specific situation where stakeholders interact with other stakeholders outside of a crisis, which represents the majority of day-to-day public relations practice. Twitter data was collected during for each week of each conference, and all company tweets were filtered out of the data sample. Atext-mining approach was then used to examine the conversations among the stakeholders at the events.

Findings indicate that the strongest relationship was developed by Salesforce.com with its stakeholders at the Dreamforce 2018 event in large part because ofthe CEO’s keynote andthe organizational commitment to social justice and sustainability. Granted, Salesforce hadalready worked to develop a culture among employees and customers based on the concept, “family,”or “Ohana.” However, the text of the conversations reveal that the focus at this conference was on societal issues presented by the CEO. In contrast, the findings from the Adobe conference suggest the organization has a transactional relationship with its stakeholders, in part because the CEO keynote focused heavily on products and technology. The implications of these findings indicate that big data from social media can be used to assess relationships, especially when social media data represents conversations and interactions among stakeholders. The findings also show the influence of CEO communications on the relationship and the vital role that public relations practitioners play in setting that CEO communications agenda.
