Abstract:
The corrosion on smooth tinned iron material has been studied in different media. Solutions of sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid and salt solutions of ammonium chloride and sodium chloride were prepared to investigate the corrosion on the metal plates. The plates was immersed in the solutions for a period of time same for all the solutions in order to determine the most aggressive environment. Weight loss technique was adopted to study the rate of corrosion. The result reveals that the material got corroded in this order sulphuric acid > hydrochloric acid > acetic acid > ammonium chloride > sodium chloride. It was therefore concluded that the rate of corrosion was high in strong acids compared to the weak acids and salts.

Abstract:
Objectives. The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is increased in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) associated vasculitides (AAV) as compared to healthy subjects. The mechanisms underlying this increased occurrence of VTE are not completely understood. We hypothesize that AAV patients in remission are more procoagulant than healthy controls.Methods.Patients with AAV in remission and no VTE for the last 6 months were included. Patients with severe renal impairment (serum creatinine > 250 μmol/l) were excluded. Age and sex matched healthy controls were included. The endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) was determined together with hemostatic variables: fibrinogen, D-dimers, factor VIII (FVIII), tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), protein C, and free protein S.Results.Thirty-one patients were included. In 27 patients not taking anticoagulants, ETP was measured and found to be elevated: 137.1% as compared to a median of 90.0% for healthy controls (p < 0.01). Fibrinogen and D-dimer levels were not elevated in patients (median 3.5 g/l and 279 μg/l, respectively). FVIII and TFPI levels were also significantly increased in patients as compared to healthy controls (159% vs 137%; 122.5% vs 101%, respectively), whereas protein C and free protein S levels were not elevated (126.5% vs 118.6% and 124.6% vs 118.3%, respectively).Conclusion.Patients with AAV in remission are more procoagulant than healthy controls, as indicated by an increased ETP. The increased FVIII level measured in these patients suggests persistence of endothelial activation and/or dysfunction. This endothelial dysfunction may cause a continuous low-grade procoagulant state.

Abstract:
This study aims to scrutinize historical development, current situation, and main problems of the Afghanistan Education System and the political, social, and economic dimensions of international aid to the country that are made to solve these problems. Following a brief analysis of the historical progress of the Afghanistan education system; the current state of the system and primary, secondary, and community based educational activities in the country in the period ensuing the 2001 US intervention and lasting until 2020 and the place of the foreign aid in the education system and its effects on this system are explained. The resources of this study encompass books; articles; media broadcasts; direct observations in the field and the information obtained through interviews with students, teachers, bureaucrats, politicians, relief workers, and project beneficiaries; and websites, reports and periodical publications of the United Nations, international organizations, state-run institutions of the donor countries, Afghanistan Ministry of Education and Ministry of Economy, which carries out non-governmental organizations affairs in Afghanistan. Through the analysis of the data gathered from accessible sources, it has been revealed that the decades' lasting wars, internal conflicts, poverty, and disasters have destroyed the Afghan Education Sector and unfortunately, no permanent and sustainable solutions could be developed yet despite the significant gains accomplished thanks to intense efforts for nearly two decades. Lacking enough resources and means to solve these problems, Afghanistan remains dependent on aid. Hence, international aid should continue in the field of education as in the other fields more systematically and comprehensively for Afghanistan which is regrettably does not seem to be able to disentangle from this deadlock in the short or medium run and geographical imbalances in the distribution of both public services and international aid should be eliminated. Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances, outcomes remain poor in secondary and relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We previously demonstrated that combination thioguanine (6TG) and decitabine restores therapeutic efficacy in vitro in R/R AML (O'Dwyer K et al. Blood 2010;114:2657). Based on these data, we completed a Phase I dose-escalation study of 6TG with decitabine in advanced myeloid malignancies with an overall response rate (ORR) of 67% and median progression-free survival (PFS) of 42 weeks in responding patients (Lee DJ, et al. Blood 2016;128:2816). Moreover, 5 of the 6 study participants who had previously received a hypomethylating agent (HMA) responded, suggesting that 6TG in combination with decitabine can overcome HMA resistance. Because of these results, a cohort of patients with high-risk and R/R AML and MDS were treated with combination 6TG and decitabine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and we now report our clinical experience with this regimen. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all adult patients at our institution with advanced myeloid malignancies who had received at least one cycle of 6TG and decitabine between 2013-2017. The treatment regimen utilized the maximum tolerated dose of 6TG identified in the phase I trial. Up to 2 cycles of induction with 6TG 80 mg/m2/day PO in 2 divided doses was given on Days 1-12. Decitabine 20 mg/m2 IV was given on Days 3-12. Following this, maintenance cycles consisted of 6TG on Days 1-7 and decitabine on Days 3-7 at the same doses. Treatment was continued until the time of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), disease progression, or toxicity. The primary objective of this retrospective analysis was to determine the ORR. Secondary objectives were to evaluate PFS and overall survival (OS) in this population. RESULTS: Forty-two patients were identified, 55% of whom were female, with a median age of 68 years (range, 23-83 years). Thirty-three percent of the patients had secondary AML; 62% had R/R AML; 2% had R/R MDS; and 2% had chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. By ELN genetic risk stratification, 38% were adverse-risk, 43% were intermediate, and 17% were favorable, while 2% were unknown. However, 36 (86%) patients failed prior therapy, suggesting that nearly all of the treated patients were poor-risk. Nineteen (45%) patients had received prior HMA therapy, and 6 (14%) had undergone previous HSCT. Patients received a median of 2 cycles of therapy (range, 1-10). Five (12%) patients achieved complete remission (CR), 7 (16%) obtained a CR with incomplete count recovery (CRi/p), and 2 (5%) had morphologic leukemia-free state (MLFS), for an ORR of 33% (CR+CRi/p+MLFS). One notable patient who achieved CR was a 73-year-old with secondary AML, complex cytogenetics, and a TP53 mutation who subsequently went on to HSCT. Another 5 (36%) responders had complex karyotypes or poor-risk genetics. Ten of the 14 responders (71%) failed prior therapy. Of the 19 who had received prior HMA therapy, 6 (32%) responded. Six of 14 (43%) responders proceeded to HSCT. Two additional patients had significant blast reduction and underwent HSCT. Responses and maximum blast reduction were obtained after two cycles of therapy. For the responders, the median PFS was 38 weeks (range, 11-not reached), while the median OS was 43 weeks (range, 11-not reached). CONCLUSIONS: Combined 6TG and decitabine is a highly active regimen in advanced myeloid malignancies, with an ORR of 33% in this cohort, and median PFS and OS of 38 and 43 weeks, respectively, in responding patients. This compares favorably to the expected response rate of 10-20% with decitabine monotherapy in this poor-risk population consisting of mostly secondary and R/R AML. These data also confirm our prior phase I study findings that the addition of 6TG to decitabine can overcome prior HMA resistance, with 32% of those who had previously failed HMA therapy responding. This combination remains a viable therapeutic option for elderly and unfit patients with high-risk and R/R AML who cannot tolerate intensive chemotherapy. Abstract:
Abstract The complexity and duration of the so-called ‘European refugee crisis’ created a climate of uncertainty, which left ample room for mass media to shape citizens’ understanding of what the arrival of these refugees meant for their respective country. This study analyses the national media discourses in Hungary, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Spain for this time period. Applying Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modelling in five languages and based on N = 130,042 articles from 24 news outlets, we reveal country-specific media frames to track the overall course of the refugee debate and to uncover dynamics and shifts in discourses. While results show similarities across countries, due to media coverage responding to real-world developments, there are differences in media framing as well. Possible sources of these differences such as countries’ geographic location or status as receiving country are discussed.

Abstract:
Introduction: The addition of tyrosine kinase inhibitors to hyperfractionated cyclophosphamide, dexamethasone, vincristine, and doxorubicin alternating with high-dose methotrexate and cytarabine (HCVAD) for the treatment of Ph-positive ALL has significantly improved outcomes. However, with the increased median survival, an increased incidence of CNS relapses were documented over time, thus suggesting an increased risk among pts with Ph-positive disease (Ravandi et al, Cancer 2015).In order to reduce this incidence, treatment protocols for Ph-positive ALL were amended in 2012 to increase prophylactic IT chemotherapy from 8 to 12 at our institution. The aim of this study is to compare the incidence of CNS relapses in pts with Ph-positive ALL treated with 8 versus 12 ITs. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 156 pts with newly diagnosed Ph-positive ALL treated with Rituximab (R)± HCVAD plus imatinib (n=35), dasatinib (n=68), or ponatinib (n=53) between July 2001 and January 2019. Pts with CNS disease at initial diagnosis were excluded. Complete molecular response (CMR) at 3 months was defined as absence of a quantifiable BCR-ABL1 transcript. CNS relapse was identified by detection of blasts or rare atypical cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in at least 2 successive evaluations and/or findings of leptomeningeal disease on imaging. Landmark analysis was performed at 6 months at the approximate time of completion of both systemic and IT therapy. Poor risk cytogenetic abnormality was defined as the presence of +der(22)t(9;22) and/or −9/9p in the absence of high hyperdiploidy (51‐65 chromosomes). CNS relapse-free survival (RFS) was defined from the start of therapy to the time of CNS relapse. Patients who died or relapsed in bone marrow were censored at the time of death and systemic relapse, respectively. Survival was assessed with and without the censoring of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Results: Pt characteristics are summarized in Figure A. One hundred and twelve pts (72%) received a median of 8 ITs (range, 2-8) and 44 pts (28%) received a median of 12 (range, 9-15). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in regards to baseline characteristics with the exception that more patients in the > 8 ITs cohort received ponatinib (66% vs 21%) and thus achieved a higher rate of 3-month CMR (70% vs 52%; p=0.04). CNS relapses were identified in 11 pts overall (7%, 4 treated with imatinib and 7 with dasatinib) and all of them received 8 or less prophylactic ITs (IT ≤8, 10% vs IT >8, 0%; p=0.023). The median follow-up of the entire population was 81 months, and 97 and 43 months for pts who received ≤8 and >8 ITs, respectively. The 3 and 6-year CNS RFS was 89% and 88% in pts with ≤8 ITs and 100% in pts with >8 Its, respectively (overall P=0.041; 3-yr CNS RFS P=0.049; 6-yr CNS RFS P=0.045) (Figure B). The outcomes remained statistically significant even after censoring for ASCT (P=0.048) (Figure C). In a multivariate analysis and after adjusting for the follow-up time, a median of 12 prophylactic IT chemotherapies was a prognostic factor significantly associated with a decrease rate of CNS relapses (P=0.03; HR=0.64 95%, CI: 0.43-0.96) (Figure D). Conclusion: In pts with newly diagnosed Ph-positive ALL, incorporation of 12 prophylactic IT chemotherapy in addition to systemic therapy is a very effective strategy to reduce the long-term incidence of CNS relapses. We explore the vision of closed-loop bio-digital interfaces for human augmentation, where the bio-digital system allows for both sensing and writing biological information to the body. Current-generation wearable devices sense an individual's physiological data such as heart rate, respiration, electrodermal activity, and EEG, but lack in sensing their biological counterparts, which drive the majority of individual's physiological signals. On the other hand, biosensors for detecting biochemical markers are currently limited to one-time use, are non-continuous and don't provide flexibility in choosing which biomarker they sense. We believe that the future for wearable biosensors lies in going beyond specific sensing capabilities and becoming a wearable "lab" on body, where a small device can offer a fully integrated and re-configurable system that mimics several processes usually performed in the laboratory for clinical diagnostics and analysis of human health. To illustrate our vision of having a lab on body, we prototyped "Wearable Lab" a bio-digital platform for sensing biochemical and digital data from saliva. Our platform contains digital sensors such as an IMU for activity recognition, as well as an automated system for continuous sampling of biomarkers from saliva by leveraging existing paper-based biochemical sensors. The platform could aid with longitudinal studies of biomarkers and early diagnosis of diseases. We present example data collected from the device, show a preliminary evaluation, and discuss the limitation of our platform.

Abstract:

The present study explores the practice of football media viewing in sports bars. It is based on the constructivism research paradigm (Guba & Lincoln, 2005), a conceptualisation of media as a tool for social behaviour (Couldry, 2003) and James Wertsch’s (1998) Mediated Action Theory. The study analyses two dimensions of football media viewing in sports bars: it focuses on the psychological motivations and the socio-cultural structure. The study’s main objective is to understand both the role of media for the practice of football media viewing in sports bars and the constitution of gender during the practice. It is a subject worthy of in-depth examination as there is a lack of holistic, contextualised and critical research in media studies, particularly in the field of football media consumption. The study applied ethnographic observations of two sports bars in a middle-class suburb in Cape Town as well as on-site and off-site interviews. During this time the researcher balanced subjective experiences with social meanings and scientific theories in a reflexive and flexible manner. The results reveal a complex network of individual purposes and socio-cultural tools. On the individual level they explain which media aspects are important to serve patrons’ needs and why male patrons discriminate against women. On the socio-cultural level the results show how media, gender and other tools interact to influence patrons’ behaviour. The study concludes by suggesting how media can be used to create enjoyable social environments and how social structures can be altered to create a more equal society beyond the sports bar environment.

Abstract:
The usage of social networking sites is steadily increasing, setting higher demands on companies and their need to be present on social media. This study aims to examine how companies could design their content on Facebook and Instagram to promote interaction from followers. To be able to understand this the company Pantamera is used as a case in this study. Pantamera is responsible for the recycling of metal cans and PET bottles in Sweden, and are experiencing that their usage of strategies on social media is deficient. To answer the purpose, already existing theories of how to form a social media strategy and methods are examined. This is implemented through an online survey aiming to understand the target audience, and the results are used as a foundation for the design process. The designs are evaluated through interviews and the conclusion is that it is possible to design content on social media in order to promote interaction. Important to have in mind when creating content for interaction is its design, what platform it intends to be designed for and that the company should at all times communicate with their target audience on their terms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Brand identities among musicians often have a shattered appearance and are used inconsistent, compared to product and service corporations. Thereof, the study aimed to research if a logotype should be considered important for a musician and how a logotype can be designed to be as advantageous as possible for a musician. Few studies have been made within the subject of musicians and logotypes, therefore, research about brand identities and logotype design intended for product- and service corporations was studied. The studies showed that a brand identity should communicate who you are as a company through a uniformed appearance that is used consistently. Furthermore, the studies showed that a logotype should have high contrast, be distinguishing and slightly detailed, to be considered as strong. To answer the objective, three different sorts of logotypes were designed and evaluated through interviews with 15 respondents. The three types were text logotype, abstract symbol logotype and picturing symbol logotype. These were valued based on fulfillment of key values, creation of the right associations, conformance with the music and the opportunity for recognition. The evaluation showed that a logotype with a symbol was preferable since it gave a higher level of recognition. Furthermore, the abstract logotype was preferred by the respondents and it achieved the most criterias and aspects considered for a strong logotype. The abstract design also enabled the creation of new intrinsic meaning that can be adapted to suit the brand of the musician.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The taotie motif on early Chinese ritual bronzes always has two eyes, but eludes the representation of any particular creature with various aesthetic techniques that prevent a clear reading of the image. The motif may be traced back to a simple two-eyed motif that appears in Erlitou culture (c. 1900-1500 BCE) on turquoise plaques worn on the chests of religious interlocutors or spirit mediums who used wine vessels in the performance of sacrificial rites. The early Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1300 BCE) taotie is simple, with two-eyes and the suggestion of a face within a band of ornament, but an incised pottery shard with a split human figure suggests a more complex aesthetic vocabulary on perishable media and presages the complexity of the late Shang (c. 1300-1050 BCE) motif, in which the horns and ears of certain animals, including humans, and the open tiger-mouth allude to the passage to the world of the ancestral spirits.

Abstract:
The term ‘Media aetas’ or ‘Middle age’ was first used by the poet Petrarch (1304–74), and later by intellectuals who wished to emphasize their own achievements agains a background of that ‘darker age’. In fact, the period from 500 to 1500 saw many and diverse transformations of late antique institutions. The Germanic tribes of the Ostragoths, Franks, Burgundians, and Visigoths transformed the Roman Empire through often violent interactions; the Mediterranean Empire was transformed by the spread of Islam in the 7th century; and the 12th and 13th centuries saw a remarkable consolidation of political units and increased European integration. The famine of 1314–17 and the Black Death (1347–52) resulted in a loss of half the population and the remaking of the European economy and the next century saw the effect of the Ottoman challenge as well as the beginnings of exploration in Africa and the Americas.

Abstract:
The 1990s witnessed the emergence of stalking as a new social construct that was recognized through the development of antistalking statutes. Simultaneously, stalking received widespread attention in the popular news media and in scholarly works by mental health professionals. Considerable variation exists among the legal, clinical, and research definitions of stalking. Large-scale epidemiological studies, conducted in Australia, Great Britain, and the United States, suggest that stalking is a relatively common behavior. Women have an 8–33% lifetime risk of being the victim of stalking, depending on the definition. For men, the lifetime risk is 2–7%. Studies on the epidemiology of stalking violence give a wide range of results: 3–46% of stalkers progress to violence. Higher rates of stalking have been reported among some populations, including college students, mental health clinicians, and celebrities. Female stalkers differ from male stalkers in their motivations and target populations. Finally, children and adolescents also exhibit stalking behaviors outside of normal developmental behaviors. Behavior patterns that we now call “stalking” have been described for thousands of years. Hippocrates, Galen, Plutarch, and various physicians of the Middle Ages described these behaviors (Lloyd-Goldstein, 1998). In 1837, Esquirol differentiated erotomania and nymphomania (Esquirol, 1838/1965). Both Kraepelin (1921/1976) and de Clérambault (1921) described erotomania in the 1920s. Classic literature provides several historical instances of what appears to be stalking. It has been argued that Shakespeare’s last 25 sonnets reflect his obsessional attachment and spurned pursuit of the “dark lady,” with evidence of obscenities, threats, paranoia, and irrationality (Skoler, 1998). Mullen, Pathé, and Purcell (2000) describe evidence of behaviors typical of stalkers in the lives and written works of Italian poets Danté Alighieri (1265–1321) and Petrarch (1304–1374), and the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855). Louisa May Alcott’s first novel, A Long Fatal Love Chase, written in 1866 but discovered and published in 1993, tells the story of a young woman pursued with increasing anger, resentment, and ultimately violence by the husband she left (Mullen et al., 2000). Two of the late twentieth century’s most notorious forensic psychiatric cases arose from the mental problems and violent behavior of stalkers.

Abstract:
The relative performance of (i) a body-fitted unstructured grid Navier-Stokes solver [Moin and Apte, AIAA J. 2006], and (ii) a fictitious domain based finite-volume approach [Apte et al. JCP 2009] is examined for simulating flow through packed beds of spheres at moderate flow rates, 50 ≲ Re ≲ 1300. The latter employs non-body conforming Cartesian grids and enforces the no-slip conditions on the pore boundaries implicitly through a rigidity constraint force. At these flow rates, fluid inertia can result in complex steady and unsteady pore scale flow features that influence macro-scale properties. We examine the requirements on both methods to properly capture these features in both simple and complex arrangements of spheres. First, two prototypical test cases of flow through packed beds are studied thoroughly at a range of Reynolds numbers in the inertial flow regime. Next flow through a random packing of 51 spheres at Re = 1322 is simulated using both methods. The suitability of both approaches to the complex configurations observed in large randomly packed beds is discussed.

Abstract:
The mathematical models, which describe the transfer process in Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) of Pb-Zn, were established by means of the rules of metallurgical reaction engineering, mass and energy conservation. These models took into account 4 important chemical reactions, heat and mass transfer between gas and solid. The solid particles were treated as porous media when the diffusion of the gas was calculated. The main parameters, such as temperature, the mass of every species, etc, were measured for an operating ISF, and were used as boundary conditions. Based on the Fortran program language, the code to solve the corresponding govern equations was developed, and thermal processes in the furnace were numerically simulated. The results show that the maximum temperature is about 1870K, which is around 1m from the inlet of primary air. The temperature of gas from the top of burden is about 1300K, which is lower than that in the similar furnace. So, it is necessary to take some means to decrease the heat loss from the wall of ISF. A lot of CO exists in the flue gas, which can be used as fuel of boiler or combustion equipment. Based on the mass flow rate and temperature distribution of gas and burden in ISF, the height of five zones, i.e. preheating zone, PbO reduction zone, ZnO reduction zone, coke gasification zone and coke combustion zone, are respectively 2.0m, 0.6m, 3.8m, 4.0m and 2.5m The predicted results by the model are accordant with the measured values in an operating ISF.

Abstract:
Abstract Thorium dioxide is an important material for the nuclear industry. In the last decade, there has been a renewal of interest in studying the feasibility of thorium based fuel reactor to decrease the minor actinides production during the burn-up. Furthermore the resistance of the thorium dioxide to aqueous corrosion can make this material attractive for immobilizing tetravalent actinides. Leaching tests of powdered samples of thorium dioxide calcinated at 1300°C showed that the normalized dissolution rate is very low (between 10−6 and 10−7 g/(m2.d) in acidic media, and 10−9–10−10 g/(m2.d) after pH>3 when the formation of colloïdes occurs. Thorium dioxide which is isomorphic with the actinide dioxides such as UO2, PuO2 allows the formation of solid solutions whatever the concentration of the actinide. Several solid solutions Th1−xUxO2 were synthesized with mole-ratios Th/(U+Th) ranging from x = 0 to 1. X-ray powder diffraction data allowed to check that the Vegard’s law is respected in all the range, and specific surface area was also measured. The resistance of the solid-solution to aqueous corrosion was measured as a function of several parameters (leaching time, leachate acidity, uranium concentration) and the kinetics of solid solutions dissolution was determined as a function of the uranium concentration. The stoechiometry of the release of both actinides was verified, however due to the oxidization of U (IV) in U (VI) in contact with the leachate, the dissolution rate of both thorium and uranium increases with the thorium substitution in the solid by uranium (TV).
