Abstract:
Context: Work-life balance has become a growing concern in athletic training, but little is known about the experiences of faculty and finding it. Challenges in finding work-life balance have been reported among faculty in higher education, and those who are new to a role are often susceptible to increased stress and overload. Objective: Examine junior athletic training faculty members' experiences with work-life balance during their role inductance. Design: Qualitative inquiry. Setting: Higher education institutions. Patients or Other Participants: Sixteen junior faculty (7 male, 9 female) representing 7 National Athletic Trainers' Association districts participated. The average age of the junior faculty members was 32 ± 3.5 years. Twelve were in tenure track and 4 had non–tenure track positions. Main Outcome Measure(s): All participants completed phone interviews with one researcher following a semistructured interview protocol. Recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed following a phenomenological approach. We intentionally selected 3 primary measures of trustworthiness to establish the rigor of the study: (1) peer review, (2) multiple-analyst triangulation, and (3) researcher triangulation. Results: Three factors were identified as inhibitors of work-life balance for junior faculty: (1) role inductance, (2) research and teaching, and (3) upcoming deadlines. Two organizational strategies (flexibility and mentorship) and 2 individual strategies (time management and personal outlets) emerged as facilitators for work-life balance. Conclusions: Junior faculty in athletic training can experience conflict in balancing their roles as faculty members as well as their outside and own personal interests. The data support previous literature, and illustrates that organizational factors precipitate imbalance and a combination of organizational and individual strategies promote balance.

Abstract:
Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have been widely adopted in higher education worldwide, but predominately used as repositories of learning materials. Mobile access to LMSs enables greater mobility and flexible learning, and thus may help boosting non-repository uses of LMSs, maximizing their educational affordance. This study examined the extent to which mobile access to an LMS, Moodle, was used for various learning activities, with a focus on those beyond storing and retrieving learning materials, as well as the factors influencing students’ non-repository uses of LMS via mobile access. A mixed-method approach was applied, with survey responses collected from 316 students and interviews with 26 students and five instructors across nine courses in a comprehensive university in Hong Kong. The results showed that mobile access to non-repository uses of Moodle was significantly less frequent than that to repository uses across all courses, and students viewed mobile access to the Moodle platform largely as a backup to supplement computer access. Findings suggested four inter-related factors influencing mobile access to LMS for non-repository uses, including course LMS activity design, instructors’ attitudes towards LMS, the nature of tasks conducted with LMS, and situational contexts.

Abstract:
Painful vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) constitute the most frequent acute complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). However, despite the high economic and personal burden of hospitalization for VOE, there exists no therapeutic approach for VOE other than pain management and hydration. Hydroxyurea (HU) is frequently used continuously to augment levels of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in patients with SCD, in association with clinical amelioration. However, in addition to its cytostatic effects, HU has immediate anti-inflammatory effects that inhibit vaso-occlusive processes in the microcirculation of mice with SCD, mediated by stimulation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling (Almeida et al., Blood 120(14):2879, 2012). The Hydroxyurea in the Emergency Room to Lessen Pain in Sickle Cell Crisis (HELPS) study (NCT03062501) was a phase II, single-center, randomized, open-label interventional Study (Phase II) designed to evaluate, primarily, the safety of moderate-to-high daily doses of HU in SCD patients in the acute phase of VOE management. Thirty HbSS patients were included in the study within 24h of VOE onset at the Hemorio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Inclusion criteria were: Arrival at the ER within 8h previous to inclusion, confirmed VOE associated with a pain scale score of > 6 within the last 24h, and a pain score of >4 at the time of inclusion. Patients with baseline neutrophil counts < 3.0 (103mm-3) and platelet (PLT) counts < 90 (103mm-3) were excluded from the study due to concerns regarding myelosuppression. Females not in use of contraception, patients hospitalized for VOE within the last 4 weeks and those that had received transfusions in the last 8 weeks were also excluded. Fifteen patients were randomized to the non-intervention arm to receive the center's standard of care, while 15 were randomized to the intervention arm to receive 30-45 mg/kg HU immediately upon study inclusion, and up to two more daily HU doses (if still hospitalized), plus standard of care. During hospitalization, pain scores were recorded every 6 hours, blood counts, and transaminases were determined at 24 h. Adverse events (CTCAE version 4.03), pain medication administered, and length of stay were recorded. Patients were recalled for a post-VOE visit at 7 days after the last HU dose for evaluation for physical exam, late adverse events, blood counts, and transaminases. Twenty-nine patients concluded the study, with 14 patients in the non-intervention arm and 15 in the intervention arm (aged 31.3±10.1 yrs). Four and three patients in each group (respectively) were on continuous HU therapy upon inclusion, and one patient in the non-intervention arm continued taking HU (20 mg/kg/day) throughout the study. Patients in the intervention arm each received up to three daily administrations of HU (mean dose, 31±5 mg/Kg/day; mean number of doses administered, 1.6 per patient). One patient experienced emesis within 2 h of first dose and did not receive a top-up dose. With regard to preliminary safety data, adverse events did not differ significantly between the arms; 4 grade 1-2 events occurred in each of the groups within 24 h of inclusion (all nausea/emesis) and nausea and/or pain were reported in 5 and 3 patients in the non-intervention and intervention arms, respectively, throughout the study. One serious adverse event (death due to sepsis) occurred in the non-intervention arm. Transaminases, red blood cell count, Hb and hematocrit did not differ significantly between the two arms at 24h after inclusion and at the post VOE consultation (number returning; 13 and 12, respectively). No myelosuppression was seen, but the intervention group had a significant decrease in leukocyte count and an increase in PLT count at 7 days post HU, compared to baseline (WBC; 11.9±4.8, 16.4 ±7.0 x 103mm-3: PLT; 570±275, 428±139 x 103mm-3, P<0.05, respectively). Sample numbers were too small to detect any statistically significant decrease in length of stay, pain scores, or opioid usage. However, data indicate that the use of up to three consecutive daily doses of approximately 30 mg/kg HU in the acute phase of the management of SCD patients with VOE is feasible and safe, independently of whether patients already take HU on a continuous basis. Results will aid in the design of larger multicenter trials to evaluate the potential efficacy of the use of oral or intravenous HU during hospitalization for SCD VOE. Financial Support: FAPESP, Brazil. Disclosures Fertrin: Agios Pharmaceuticals, Inc.: Research Funding. OffLabel Disclosure: Use of up to 3 doses of hydroxyurea (30-45 mg/kg/day) in patients with sickle cell disease hospitalized for acute painful vaso-occlusive episodes.

Abstract:
Nowadays, modern standards apply the proof of competence method to prove that a design force does not exceed a certain limit to ensure a certain safety level. Furthermore, standards elaborated during the last years apply a cycle-based approach instead of a time-based approach. The shortcomings of the standard ISO 16625:2013 need to be addressed in a revision. Therefore, a working group WG3 of ISO/TC 96 SC3 has been established in 2015 to prepare a new working draft ISO/WD 16625. Objectives are to adopt a cycle-based approach and to incorporate proofs of competence for static strength and fatigue strength for running ropes and stationary ropes, based on scientific inputs. The research work about steel wire ropes by the University of Stuttgart and the Technical University of Dresden developed the method Stuttgart and the method Leipzig, both representing regression models to determine the attainable number of bending cycles of a wire rope. The present paper briefly explains the method Leipzig and the method Stuttgart in chapter 3. In chapter 4, the partly implementation of findings from the method Stuttgart to the standard EN 13001-3-2:2014 is discussed and shortcomings are identified. Those shortcomings have also been addressed by the new developed concept of ISO/WD 16625 that is outlined in chapter 5. Finally, chapter 6 provides an overview on the revised ISO/WD 16625 to conclude the current state of the standardization work.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to improve the solubility, bioavailability, and stability of resveratrol (RES-SD) Solid Dispersion in Polygonum cuspidatum extract (PCE) by hot melt extrusion (HME). In addition, the role of the auxiliary substances in PCE was also studied. The solid dispersion of Polygonum cuspidatum extract was prepared by hot-melt extrusion. The optimum formula was selected by single factor design and orthogonal test. The optimum formula was barrel temperature 140 °C, screw rotation speed 40 rpm/min, and the ratio of Polygonum cuspidatum extract to HPMCAS was 1:2. The dissolution test showed that PCE-SD increased the dissolution of RES from 46.75 ± 0.47% to 130.06 ± 0.12%. The pharmacokinetics curve of rats showed that PCE-SD increased AUC0-t of RES from 111,471.22 ± 11.4% to 160,458.968 ± 15.7%, indicating an approximately 1.44-fold increase in absorption. In addition, the rotation speed of PCE-SD screw is less than that of RES-SD screw. The bioavailability of PCE-SD was slightly better than that of RES-SD. PCE-SD is more hygroscopic than RES-SD. PCE-SD increased the solubility and oral bioavailability of RES. The auxiliary substances in Polygonum cuspidatum extract have influence on its preparation technology, stability, and bioavailability.

The accelerating pace of anthropogenic climate change has galvanized intensive interest in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Developing electrode materials for electrochemical devices requires precision and synthetic control over a number of factors, including surface morphology, nanostructure, and distribution of active materials. To this end, my thesis work investigated strategies to implement the M13 bacteriophage as a programmable, lightweight scaffold in the synthesis of three-dimensional, nanoporous foams. Virus-templated nanofoams were incorporated into several relevant energy applications spanning water electrolysis, microbatteries, and electrolytic urea decomposition. The virus-mediated synthesis toolkit yielded clear enhancements in electrochemical performance, as well as design insights into improving nanostructured electrodes in diverse contexts.
Virus-templated, platinum-nickel hydroxide nanofoams were first designed and optimized, displaying strong performance as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline conditions (ca. -200 mA cm⁻² [subscript geo] and -4.9 A mg⁻¹ [subscript Pt] at -70 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode). Mass-normalized activity was definitively linked to the platinum dispersion within the virus-templated matrix, providing a guideline for future electrocatalyst development. Next, virus-templated metal phosphides were engineered with orthogonal control over nanoscale features, phase, and composition. Synthetic versatility was developed across monometallic nickel and copper, as well as bimetallic nickel-cobalt, material systems.
When applied as Li-ion microbattery anodes, virus-templated Ni₅P₄ demonstrated a discharge capacity of 677 mAh g⁻¹ (677 mAh cm⁻³) and an 80% capacity retention over more than 100 cycles, outperforming analogous reported Ni₅P₄ materials. The strong performance was attributed to the virus-templated nanostructure, which remains electronically conductive throughout cycling and obviates the need for conductive additives. In the final application, a fundamental exploration into Ni-based catalysts for the electrooxidation of urea was undertaken, highlighting the need for revised benchmarks to facilitate accurate comparisons across the literature and developing an empirical hypothesis for catalyst instability under constant-current electrolysis. Virus-templated, Ni[subscript x]P[subscript y] nanofoams were again applied as electrocatalysts, displaying strong activity relative to the field and enhanced resistance to deactivation.
Finally, several directions for scaling methodologies were presented with a future outlook for virus-templating as a material synthesis platform in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:
Just as the surrealistic movement challenged our perception of reality, the present work applies surrealistic methods to challenge our preconceived hierarchies between body, dress, and accessory. Adding to past surrealistic work in fashion design, the present work does not only strive to create surrealistic expressions, but to enhance the creative process through surrealistic methods. Three surrealistic methods were tested: Entopic Graphomani, Frottage, and Exquisite Corpse. The methods ability to challenge hierarchies between body, dress, and accessory was assessed through their ability to result in an element of surprise. For the present work, Exquisite Corpse had the greatest potential. By using participant observation and an adapted version of Exquisite Corpse seven looks were developed. The present work concludes that the surrealistic methods can by used not only to develop surrealistic expressions, but also to enhance the creative process within fashion design.

Alfaro, Ruiz Víctor M. "Trade-off Issues in 2DoF PID Control Design Performance, Robustness, and Fragility." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/130014.

Abstract:
The proportional integral derivative (PID) is, with no doubt, the control algorithm most applied in industrial control used most of the time as proportional integral (PI) control. The controller must be matched (tuned) to the controlled process considering: control system performance, its response to changes in its inputs, set-point and disturbance; its robustness, its capabilities to keep the system stable in case of changes in the controlled process dynamics; control effort use and characteristics; and controller fragility, the effect of a change on the controller parameters. In this thesis, a general design procedure for two-degree-of-freedom (2DoF) PI/PID controllers is proposed based in the specification of the different control system closed-loop transfer functions that include parameters that affect the performance/robustness trade-off. Considering than the control system robustness requirement, is controlled process dependent, and more important, that it cannot be avoided, the robustness level, measured with the maximum sensitivity, is used as the design parameter. The proposed controller design methodology denoted as Model Reference Robust Tuning (MoReRT) is applied to tune 2DoF PI controllers for first- and second-order over damped, integrating, inverse response, and unstable controlled processes. An extension of the MoReRT to 2DoF PID controllers is also considered. The proposed MoReRT method starts with the selection of regulatory control and servo control closed-loop transfer functions targets. These transfer functions state the desired shapes for the disturbance and set-point step responses. The responses targets specification takes into account the controlled process model characteristics, particularly its non-minimum phase components and order. They depend also on the design parameters that affect the control system performance, control effort, and robustness. Controller parameters are obtained by optimizing a cost functional that evaluate the difference between the target total response and the one obtained with the controller to tune. Design parameters are adjusted to obtain a robustness level target. The accomplishment of the robustness target level for all the controlled process models considered (over damped, integrated, and unstable) is one of the distinctive characteristics of the proposed MoReRT design method.

Abstract:
I värderingsprocessen deltog totalt 30 personer.

Abstract:

Scania InfoMate develops web applications that support truck distributors and workshops with the necessary tools for an effective maintenance process. However, the end-users of these applications are faced with as many different graphical interfaces as there are applications. As a consequence, important effects of recognition are lost, developers spend unnecessary time designing new solutions for each application and Scania InfoMate does not present a homogeneous brand image towards its customers.

Therefore the aim of this study is to give a suggestion of how a standardized graphical interface for web applications at Scania InfoMate should be designed. The given suggestion should come from thorough investigation of both end-user needs and recent research within the area of usability. In addition to a standardized interface this study also aims to deliver guidelines that support future web application development at Scania InfoMate.

Through a combination of methods, mainly heuristic evaluation and user interviews, an elaborate description of usability and consistency problems in a defined web application portfolio is produced. This served as a basis for developing an interface design suggestion and helped pinpoint crucial areas in need of usability and consistency guidelines.

The main findings are a graphical interface design suggestion that specify positioning and visualization of common interface elements and guidelines ensuring that future web application development at Scania InfoMate is kept at a high standard regarding usability and consistency. This study also points out areas for further development at Scania InfoMate and suggests that additional studies should take place to establish a common view on consistency issues.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the second-best toll pricing and capacity expansion problems when stated as mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). Three main questions are rised: First, whether conventional descent methods give sufficiently good solutions, or whether global solution methods are to prefer. Second, how the performance of the considered solution methods scale with network size. Third, how a discretized stochastic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (SMPEC) formulation of a stochastic network design problem can be practically solved. An attempt to answer these questions is done through a series ofnumerical experiments.

The traffic system is modeled using the Wardrop’s principle for user behavior, separable cost functions of BPR- and TU71-type. Also elastic demand is considered for some problem instances.

Two already developed method approaches are considered: implicit programming and a cutting constraint algorithm. For the implicit programming approach, several methods—both local and global—are applied and for the traffic assignment problem an implementation of the disaggregate simplicial decomposition (DSD) method is used. Regarding the first question concerning local and global methods, our results don’t give a clear answer.

The results from numerical experiments of both approaches on networks of different sizes shows that the implicit programming approach has potential to solve large-scale problems, while the cutting constraint algorithm scales worse with network size.

Also for the stochastic extension of the network design problem, the numerical experiments indicate that implicit programming is a good approach to the problem.

Further, a number of theorems providing sufficient conditions for strong regularity of the traffic assignment solution mapping for OD connectors and BPR cost functions are given.

Abstract:
Almost no one dares to disagree that the professional life of the teacher of basic education in Brazil is a discredited task, poorly remunerated and that there are no minimum physical conditions necessary and, on the other hand, that no big personal investment is required, because the teacher act depends primarily of a kind of \"gift\". However, the school and the figure of the teacher are nothing more than mere human creations, just as the images of the conditions of malaise in which the teacher works are also the same; though we have become accustomed to forget that they are so. The images inhabit the heart of a discourse consolidated as truth about the master\'s profession, but which, nevertheless, works in spite of the stipulation of discursive positions or definitions of concepts. That is, it is not exempt from one program of qualification and disqualification from the other. In other words, while some teachers get sick teaching, others heal; while some stray from the precariousness of school conditions, others are enunciated by and in their transposition. This reallocates the research on teacher renunciation beyond the hegemonic discourse of all sorts of precarious of the school or even of the material existence of a malady properly teaching, that only exists during the teacher and that, therefore, it is possible of cure. In this way, to question the causes of the different forms of renunciation of the basic education teachers, in the beginning, implies the disruption of the attendance to the demand of a Cartesian logic, that to be directed by the pointing of a conclusive instance of the resignation, deviates from a investigation. In this sense, I invite you to read the present work, which proposes new ways of listening to a certain interpretation of Psychoanalysis about some of the consolidated historical records of Brazilian basic education throughout its history. It is the search for marginal, but revealing, subsidies to learn more about what conditions contribute and have contributed to the fact that the majority of those who are still seeking teacher training for elementary education do not have a place to practice their profession.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work employs behavioral modeling to develop a bi-state control technique capable of servoing at the onset of the microelectromechanical parametric resonant bifurcation setpoint. The parametric resonance features a sharp “turn-on” in oscillation amplitude at the bifurcation, enhancing sensitivity to resonance frequency change. A bi-state controller is constructed to servo at this sharp jump point. It has two states of operation: one state is within the instability tongue where the oscillation amplitude builds up exponentially; another state resides outside of the tongue where the oscillation turns off. The rapid turn on and off of the parametric resonance keeps the resonant amplitude small and circumvents the slow build-up time. Both the simulated and experimental loop transient responses are presented.

Abstract:
In this paper, the use of entangled cross-linked fibers as core material in vibrating sandwich beams is investigated. The aim is to analyze the effect of this specific core material in terms of damping. The dynamic shear properties of the material are first studied experimentally. The shear modulus is shown to decrease with increasing shear strain amplitude at low shear strains. To include an amplitude dependency of the core material properties in the sandwich beam behavior, an analytical model is proposed. The equations of motion are derived using Lagrange’s equations. The shearing of the core is introduced in the equations through the use of virtual work to allow any relationship between shear stress and shear strain, including damping and nonlinearities. Experimental tests are carried out on sandwich beams with entangled fiber core material. The Frequency Response Function obtained exhibits decreasing resonant frequency and peak amplitude with increasing load amplitude. This softening behavior is consistent with the decreasing shear modulus. The proposed model is used take into account the softening nonlinearity. The FRF is reproduced with a linearly decreasing shear modulus and linearly increasing loss factor.

Abstract:
Abstract The North sea Yme oil field was discovered in 1987, production started in 1996 and ceased after 6 years when it was considered no longer profitable to operate. In 2007 a new development was approved, being Yme the first field re-opened in the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The concept selected was a MOPUStor: comprising a jack-up unit grouted to a subsea storage tank. Due to compromised structural integrity and lack of regulatory compliance that came to light shortly after installation, the platform was required to be removed [1]. The remaining riser caisson and the future 1050 t wellhead module required a support to allow the re-use of the facilities and tap the remaining oil reserves. The innovative tubular frame support was designed as a braced unit, secured to the existing MOPUstor leg receptacles and holding a grouted clamp larger than typical offshore clamps for which design guidance in ISO is available. The existing facilities had to be modified to receive the new structure and to guide it in place within the small clearances available. The aim of this paper is to describe the solutions developed to prepare and verify the substructure for installation; to predict the dynamic behavior of a subsea heavy lift operation with small clearances around existing assets (down to 150 mm); and to place large volume high strength grouted connections, exceeding the height and thickness values from any project ever done before. In order to avoid early age degradation of the grout, a 1 mm maximum relative movement requirement was the operation design philosophy. A reliable system to stabilize the caisson, which displacements were up to 150 mm, was developed to meet the criteria during grouting and curing. In the stabilizer system design, as well as the plan for contingencies with divers to restart grouting in the event of a breakdown, the lessons learned from latest wind turbine industry practices and from the first attempt to re-develop the field using grouted connections were incorporated. Currently the substructure is secured to provide the long term integrity of the structure the next 20 years of future production in the North Sea environment.

Hydroxylapatite composites with lanthanum phosphate were prepared with pressureless air sintering for 2 hours at different temperatures between 500°C and 1300°C. The interaction between the phases was monitored with XRD analysis. At sintering temperatures higher than 700°C, hydroxylapatite and lanthanum phosphate phase reacted and formed Ca8 La2 (PO4)6O2 as byproduct. In the mean time, hydroxylapatite decomposed and formed tricalcium phosphate.

Abstract:
With global warming being one of mankind’s greatest challenges together with, an increasing demand for electricity world-wide, and studies showing that fossil resources like coal and gas will remain a major source for electricity for the next couple of decades, research into the development of highest efficiency fossil power plants has become a top priority. Calculations for coal fired power plants have shown that by increasing the live steam parameters to 700°C and 350bar CO2 emissions can be reduced by as much as 8% compared to the current state-of-the-art. This is equivalent to a reduction of 24% compared to the current steam power plant fleet within the European Union. To achieve the desired operating hours at this temperature the application of nickel (Ni) based alloys for the main steam turbine components such as rotors, inner casings and valves is necessary. The use of Nickel base alloys for selected gas turbine components is common practice. But with steam turbine rotors being solid, 1000mm in diameter and casings with wall thicknesses >100mm the gas turbine application range and experience for nickel base alloys are well exceeded. This paper discusses a basic product design concept in order to identify the core challenges in developing Ni based steam turbine components. These include casting, forging, non-destructive testing and welding. The material property requirements for such components (steam-oxidation resistance, creep and fatigue resistance) are also identified. Based on these challenges and requirements a number of research projects have been carried out in Europe which have selected Alloy617 as being most suitable for forged components and Alloy625 for cast components. Further projects are currently being initiated. The last major step in steam turbine development for high temperatures was to switch from low alloyed chromium (Cr) steels to high alloyed Cr steels. The identified challenges in using Nickel base alloys for large steam turbines are compared to this last material switch to characterize the level of complexity and difficulty of the development of the 700°C steam turbine technology.
