Abstract:
Increasing human population and changing climate, which have given rise to frequent drought spells, pose a serious threat to global food security, while identification of high yielding drought tolerant genotypes remains a proficient approach to cope with these challenges. To offer a methodology for the evaluation of the drought-tolerant wheat genotypes based on the pheno-physiological traits, a field experiment was executed, entailing four wheat genotypes viz. BARI Gom 26, BAW 1158, BAW 1167, and BAW 1169 and two water conditions viz. control treatment (three times irrigation at 20, 50, and 70 DAS, i.e., 100% field capacity) and stressed treatment (no irrigation during the entire growing season). The results revealed that drought stress drastically reduced the days to booting, heading, anthesis and physiological maturity, relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll content, canopy temperature depression (CTD), and photo-assimilates-spike dry matter (SDM), grains spike−1 and grain yield of all wheat genotypes. In addition, the genotypes BAW 1167 and BARI Gom 26 remained more prone to adverse effects of drought as compared to BAW 1169 and BAW 1158. Furthermore, DS induced biosynthesis of compatible solutes such as proline, especially in BAW 1169, which enabled plants to defend against oxidative stress. It was inferred that BAW 1169 remained superior by exhibiting the best adaptation as indicated by the maximum relative values of RWC, total chlorophyll, CTD, proline content, SDM, grains spike−1, and grain yield of wheat. Thus, based on our findings, BAW 1169 may be recommended for general adoption and utilization in future wheat breeding programs aimed at developing potent drought-tolerant wheat genotypes to ensure food security on a sustainable basis.

Abstract:
Three bacterial isolates (ICBB 1168, ICBB 1169, ICBB 1170), being capable to utilizing phenol as sole carbon and energy source, were isolated from Buntal Lake of Central Kalimantan. Growth of all isolates were optimum at 37OC. Optimum pH for growth and phenol degradation of ICBB 1168, lCBB 1169, and ICBB 1170 were 7-8, 6, and 6-7, respectively. Among the isolates, ICBB 1170 showed best phenol degrading activity. ICBB 1170 able to degrade 16 mM phenol to 0.71 mM in 4days. Phenol degradation ability of ICBB 1170 could be increased by adding 0.01-0.1% yeast extract. Addition of 0.05-0.1% glucose in medium inhibited phenol degradation by ICBB 1170. Cell-free extracts of ICBB 1170 had specific activity 2.92 Ulmg. Degradation of benzoate by ICBB 1170 wasstudied. However, the ability to degrade phenol were higher than that of benzoate.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study was performed to clarify the pathophysiology of familial short stature with moderate GH deficiency. The siblings showed moderate GH deficiency with short stature. Pedigree analysis revealed an accumulation of the history of short stature in father’s relatives, although there was no consanguinity. We performed sequencing analysis of GH1 and GHSR gene in the siblings. We detected SNPs in the GH1 gene in the combination of the − 278G, − 57T, +1169T, and +2103C in one allele from the father and the − 278T, − 57G, +1169 A, and +2103T in the other allele from the mother in the siblings. In the previous report, the −278G and − 57T allele are associated with low serum IGF-I levels in patients with isolated GH deficiency and the haplotype of the − 278T, − 57G, +1169 A, and +2103T allele exhibited an impaired GH secretion in vitro. It is suggested that these haplotypes were responsible at least in part for the GH deficiency and short stature in these siblings.

Abstract:
Interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP), a glycoprotein specific for the retina and pineal gland, induces inflammatory changes in these two organs in immunized animals. We report here on the identification of an immunodominant determinant of bovine IRBP that is highly immunogenic and immunopathogenic in the Lewis rat. The peptide, which comprises the sequence 1169-1191 of bovine IRBP, was shown to be immunodominant by its capacity to stimulate lymphocytes sensitized against whole IRBP. A comparison was made between peptide 1169-1191 and another peptide, 1158-1180, which is nondominant but is immunogenic and immunopathogenic in the Lewis rat. Peptide 1169-1191 was found to be superior in its immunological capacities; the minimal dose of 1169-1191 needed to induce cellular immune response or disease in Lewis rats (0.02-0.1 nmol/rat) is congruent to 1,000 times smaller than that of 1158-1180. In addition, unlike the ocular disease induced by 1158-1180, the disease produced by 1169-1191 resembled that induced by whole IRBP in its kinetics and histopathological features. The immunological activity of 1169-1191 in the Lewis rat was localized to the 10 residues at the COOH terminus; no such activity was exhibited by the truncated peptide 1169-1188, which comprises the 20 residues at the NH2 terminus of the full peptide. The usefulness of this unique experimental system in analyzing the role of immunodominance in peptide immunogenicity and immunopathogenicity is underscored.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Lack of exposure to the field of Sleep Medicine at the medical student level hinders sleep training. Instead of the traditional didactic style, there is a need for innovative collaborative measures to spark interest in the younger generation of learners. The goal of this educational endeavor was to introduce medical students to the field of Sleep Medicine through the platform of Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN). Methods An interactive session was conducted for SIGN at the University of Minnesota. 24 second-year medical students were divided into 6 groups. The session consisted of introduction, videos of common sleep disorders and interactive briefing afterward. 5-point Likert scale pre and post-session surveys were administered to measure the level of knowledge regarding sleep, familiarity with diagnostic tools, available education, pathways to Sleep Medicine, learner’s interest and impact of the session. Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test was performed to compare pre- and post-surveys. Results There was a significant improvement in measures of students’ knowledge about sleep diagnostic modalities (p =7.8*10-5), education received (p= 3.2*10-5) and pathways to sleep medicine (p=4.1*10-5). Survey also showed improvement in students’ interest in pursuing a Sleep Medicine career (p=0.07). There was no difference in knowledge about the importance of sleep for health (p=0.69). All of the students found the session to be informative. Conclusion Early exposure to sleep disorders in interactive format was well received by the medical students with significant improvement in scores regarding sleep education, awareness of diagnostic modalities, career pathway and interest in sleep medicine (p=0.07). Integration of exposure to Sleep Medicine within the medical curriculum in an innovative format should be done to instigate interest in this field. Further larger studies are warranted to evaluate the changes in the students’ interest in the subspecialty with an introduction in the early stages of their career. Support

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose The incidence of a fetal single umbilical artery (SUA) is about 0.5 % and has been associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations, fetal aneuploidy and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Materials and Methods A retrospective analysis of 1169 women with singleton pregnancies diagnosed with fetal SUA between 1997 and 2014 in a specialized practice for prenatal diagnostics has been performed. Data was obtained on maternal and fetal findings as well as pregnancy outcome. Results 989 (84.6 %) fetuses showed an isolated SUA (iSUA) while 180 (15.4 %) presented with SUA and additional structural and/or chromosomal abnormalities. Structural malformations were distributed as follows: 9.0 % cardiovascular, 3.5 % urogenital, 2.9 % musculoskeletal, 3.0 % gastrointestinal and 2.1 % cerebral. 2.1 % of the fetuses had chromosomal aberrations. 50.8 % (49.2 %) of the fetuses were female (male) and right vs. left SUA was found in 64.2 % (35.8 %) of the cases. Fetuses with SUA and additional abnormalities showed lower rates of live births (85.0 % vs. 98.5 %, p < 0.001), a lower median birth weight (2825 g vs. 3220 g, p < 0.001), higher rates of preterm delivery before week 34 + 0 (13.7 % vs. 3.8 %, p < 0.001) and weighed less than the 5th growth percentile in 21.6 % vs. 9.3 % (p < 0.001) of the fetuses with iSUA. In 5.1 % (60) of the children, chromosomal or structural abnormalities were detected post-partum. Conclusion Once fetal SUA is diagnosed, intense sonoanatomy of the fetus is required and, if associated malformations are found, genetic testing must be offered. In iSUA intermittent biometry is recommended for the early detection of IUGR but additional genetic testing is not necessarily recommended.

Abstract:
Nastąpiło to wraz z wejściem w życie rozporządzenia nr 1169/11.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) care for chronically, critically ill patients with high utilization of central lines and high risk for morbidity from central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Our 38-bed LTACH noted a substantial increase in the incidence of CLABSIs (as defined by the National Healthcare Safety Network) between fiscal year (FY) 2016 and FY 2018 (Figure 1). Detailed case review identified a large number of CLABSIs which were clinically consistent with blood culture contaminants from central lines. Feedback from bedside staff also suggested gaps between practice and evidence-based measures for central line care. Methods A three-pronged CLABSI prevention project was implemented in July 2018 consisting of (1) staff education regarding daily chlorhexidine (CHG) bathing for all patients, combined with an electronic audit report to identify patients without active CHG orders; (2) change in practice to the use of venipuncture alone for blood culture collection, combined with an electronic audit report to identify blood cultures collected from central lines; and (3) a recurring 6-part educational series for nurses focused on central line care. The pre-intervention period was defined as the 12-month period between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 (FY 2018). The primary outcome was the fiscal year CLABSI rate. A secondary outcome was the proportion of blood cultures drawn from central lines. Results After 9 months of the intervention, one CLABSI had been reported for FY 2019 year-to-date at a rate of 0.4 per 1,000 CL-days, representing an 86% decrease from the FY 2018 rate of 2.8 per 1,000 CL-days. The 12-month rolling CLABSI rate decreased to 1.6 per 1,000 CL-days (Figure 2). The proportion of blood cultures collected from central lines decreased from 10.5% (69/658) to 4.5% (15/334), representing a 57% reduction. The proportion of patients ordered and receiving CHG bathing in the intervention period was >95%. Conclusion A multidisciplinary effort focused on CHG bathing, central line care, and blood culture collection led to a substantial reduction in CLABSIs in our LTACH. The use of electronic audit reports was particularly useful in achieving high adherence to practice changes. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.
