Abstract:
Europe is facing a climate and environmental crisis. To respond to this, the European Commission has launched several programmes, which aim to increase sustainability and environmental protection. This aim has been condensed into the policy document that is the European Green Deal. The European Green Deal sets out the aim of making the Union’s economy climate neutral, while improving environmental protection and protecting biodiversity. To this end, several different sectors of the economy need to be overhauled.  In EU Law, a key policy area is to protect free competition. Article 101 TFEU sets out that agreements between undertakings which have as their object or effect the prevention, restriction or distortion of competition are prohibited. Similarly, Article 102 TFEU prohibits abuse by an undertaking of a dominant position.  This thesis explores what happens when competition law thus intersects with the environmental policy of the Union. The thesis identifies two main situations  of interaction. Undertakings can invoke environmental protection to justify a restriction of competition. The Union may also rely on its antitrust provisions to enforce sustainability by holding unsustainable practices as restrictive agreements or abuses of dominant behaviour, respectively, and thus prohibited by the antitrust provisions.  Generally, the thesis concludes that there is not enough information on how the Commission and the CJEU will approach arguments relating to sustainability in its antitrust assessment. The Commission’s consumer welfare standard appears to limit environmental integration to points where a certain factor results affects the environment or sustainability on the one hand, and consumer welfare on the other. The lack of information, moreover, is in itself an issue as undertakings may abstain from environmental action if they believe they will come under scrutiny due to violations of the antitrust provisions. Therefore, a key conclusion in the thesis is that the Commission and the CJEU should set out clear guidelines for environmental action by undertakings, in relation to the antitrust provisions. Similarly, the Commission appears to be cautious to use antitrust as a tool against unsustainable practices. The Commission has, however, recently decided to open an investigation into agreements which limit sustainability, which shows that the picture may be changing.

Nilsson, David. "Energieffektiv utformning av luftaren airTURBO 101." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Technology and Science, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-395.

Full text
Abstract:

Eden Aquatech has developed a surface aerator called airTURBO 101. Aerators are used to oxygenate water in basins and ponds within biological wastewater treatment. AirTURBO 101 consists of a submerged impeller that creates a vortex which transports air below the surface. The impeller is surrounded by a plastic cylinder. In the present design of the aerator, incoming water penetrates the cylinder through a circle of holes in the wall of the cylinder. This study has examined the original cylinder and an alternate design, where the cylinders where totally submerged and the water could pour over the brim. Two cylinders with submerged brim were tested. One had the same inlet area as the original cylinder and the other had a larger inlet area. These three cylinders has been tested and compared to find out which one has the highest oxygenation rate proportionately to the energy consumption.

The following parameters were examined: the water motion inside the cylinders, energy consumption, the interface between air and water inside the cylinders and the oxygenation velocity. All experiments were carried out using scale models of airTURBO 101.

Initial experiments showed that the vortices for all cylinders were more unstable than expected.

The examinations of the water motion inside the cylinders showed that none of the designs could guarantee a continuous contact between the incoming water and the air.

The energy consumption turned out to be similar for the different cylinders. The submerged cylinder with large inlet had slightly lower energy consumption than the other.

The interface between water and air could not be calculated due to shortages in the specially developed mathematical formula. A visual depiction was not possible since the vortices were too unstable.

When measuring the velocity of oxygenation the different cylinders had similar results at a constant power. When the power was doubled a considerable increase of velocity occurred. Also during these experiments the submerged cylinder with large inlet turned out to be slightly better than the other.

One conclusion is that the submerged cylinder with large inlet is somewhat better than the other cylinders.

Another conclusion is that the main part of the aeration does not occur in the interface between water and air in the vortex, but rather in the interface created by the impeller itself. Further development of this aerator should focus on the design of the impeller. The air bubbles created in the impeller should be as small as possible.

Kozak, Malgorzata. "Le contrat d'agence commerciale et l'article 101 TFUE." Toulouse 1, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011TOU10036.

Full text
Abstract:
Distribution systems have become more and more complex and tend to use different legal figures to fulfill the producer's aims. One of them can be agency. From the perspective of competition law, agency holds a special status, resulting from the fact that the agent is present in two distinct relevant markets, in one representing this principal in the conclusion of a contract and in a second offering his services as an agent. This causes some practical difficulties and is interesting from theoritical point of view. The erroneous qualification of a distributor as an agent could result in fines imposed by competition authorities. However, as to the first market described above, according to an interpretation of article 101 TFEU, an anticompetitive agreement cannot be concluded between the same person which can lead to the agency being immune from the competition law requirements. It is imperative to recognize the difference, and therefore, the criteria of an application of article 101 TFEU to an agency have been indicated by the European Commission since 1962 and by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. Nevertheless, the enigma is far from being resolved since the proposed solutions tend to be incoherent. One of them concentrates on the single economic entity doctrine. Other solutions refer to an auxiliary theory whereby. The most recent solution focuses on risks undertaken by an agent in relation to the contracts that he negotiated. The carried out analysis and solutions reached show that some other elements must be taken into account in assessing whether an agency relationship exists including an assessment of the effects of an agreement

Reed, Daniel Simon. "Private enforcement of Art 101 and 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2015. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/374897/.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, the enforcement of competition rules in Europe has been predominantly via public enforcement. Following the European Court of Justice’s ruling in 2001 in which was established the right for compensation of harms suffered by any victim of antitrust infringements, the European Commission has made proposals to create a private antitrust enforcement regime. While compensation of victims is the first and foremost guiding principle, the regime thus created, should, according to the Commission, also deliver overall better compliance with competition rules whilst creating and sustaining a competitive European economy. In designing the system the Commission contends that it should not be grounded on similar features to that of the United States private enforcement mechanism as it has resulted in abuses of the system by private parties for private interests. A deconstructive reading of the Commission proposals, however, reveals that the envisaged regime contains more characteristics of the United States system than is explicitly presented. Furthermore, a direct comparison of common prohibitions in both systems exposes a significant lack of safeguards against misuse of the rules by private parties in the European system. This thesis also compares the envisaged European regime with the Canadian public enforcement regime. Despite the restricted cause of action accorded to private parties, the Canadian system is not immune from exploitation of the rules by private parties for self-interest. These findings call into question whether the proposed system will deliver the stated aims. This thesis concludes that considering the costs of private enforcement, European competition law should be solely the competence of public officials. It is argued that although not formally recognised either in the literature nor in the case law of the EU courts, the Commission is already legally empowered to award compensation to victims of antitrust violations. This thesis presents suggestions for an enhancement of the current public enforcement framework.

Sgaravatti, Daniele. "Down to earth philosophy : an anti-exceptionalist essay on thought experiments and philosophical methodology." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3228.

Full text
Abstract:
In the first part of the dissertations, chapters 1 to 3, I criticize several views which tend to set philosophy apart from other cognitive achievements. I argue against the popular views that 1) Intuitions, as a sui generis mental state, are involved crucially in philosophical methodology 2) Philosophy requires engagement in conceptual analysis, understood as the activity of considering thought experiments with the aim to throw light on the nature of our concepts, and 3) Much philosophical knowledge is a priori. I do not claim to have a proof that nothing in the vicinity of these views is correct; such a proof might well be impossible to give. However, I consider several versions, usually prominent ones, of each of the views, and I show those versions to be defective. Quite often, moreover, different versions of the same worry apply to different versions of the same theory. In the fourth chapter I discuss the epistemology of the judgements involved in philosophical thought experiments, arguing that their justification depends on their being the product of a competence in applying the concepts involved, a competence which goes beyond the possession of the concepts. I then offer, drawing from empirical psychology, a sketch of the form this cognitive competence could take. The overall picture squares well with the conclusions of the first part. In the last chapter I consider a challenge to the use of thought experiments in contemporary analytic philosophy coming from the ‘experimental philosophy'movement. I argue that there is no way of individuating the class of hypothetical judgements under discussion which makes the challenge both interesting and sound. Moreover, I argue that there are reasons to think that philosophers possess some sort of expertise which sets them apart from non-philosophers in relevant ways.

Growers of organic produce in the Southwestern United States face many challenges, including variation in water and temperature, and exposure to insects and disease. As a result, smallholder organic farmers are increasingly relying on soil additives such as compost tea that improve product quality, use less water, deter pests, and reduce reliance on chemical additives (Diver, 2002). But what exactly is compost tea? Do the benefits of using compost tea outweigh any concerns? For example, can it contain pathogens, and if so, do applicators have to worry about coming into contact with pathogens? This publication provides facts about making compost tea, and reviews both the benefits and potential disadvantages to help smallholder farmers to make educated decisions regarding the use of compost tea.

Wehenkel, Marie V. "TARGET VALIDATION OF UK-101 AND FUNCTIONAL STUDIES OF β1i." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/pharmacy_etds/2.

Full text
Abstract:
β1i is a major catalytic subunit of the immunoproteasome, an alternative form of the constitutive proteasome, and its upregulation has been demonstrated in a variety of disease states including cancer. Our lab has developed a small molecule inhibitor of β1i, dubbed UK-101. While UK-101 causes apoptosis in cancer cell lines, it was not clear whether this apoptotic effect was directly mediated by its irreversible inhibition of β1i. Since off-target effects are major roadblocks for the development of new and effective pharmaceuticals, target validation studies in this system would assist in the further progression of β1i inhibitors towards preclinical trials. Our hypothesis was that the expression and catalytic activity of β1i is important for the growth and proliferation of the PC-3 prostate cancer cell line, therefore the apoptotic effect seen upon treatment of PC-3 cells with UK-101 was due solely to its covalent inhibition of β1i. To test this hypothesis, a number of complementary approaches were used. The expression of β1i in PC-3 cells was increased by the treatment of these cells with interferon-gamma or tumor necrosis factor-alpha, natural inducers of the immunoproteasome. The expression of β1i in PC-3 cells was decreased using small interfering RNA or short hairpin RNA, in a transient or stable manner, respectively. All of these cells were then treated with UK-101. The efficacy of UK-101 decreased in the interferon-gamma treated cells but did not change in any other the other cell lines, suggesting that UK-101 was not specific for β1i. This was confirmed using a molecular probe of the proteasome and demonstrated that UK-101 bound to other proteasome catalytic subunits. Additional experiments were performed to determine the effect of β1i on the proliferation of PC-3 cells. Simply removing the β1i using small interfering RNA reduces the viability of these cells. Other studies demonstrated that a mutation of β1i which inhibited its catalytic activity reduced the viability of cells when compared to those containing the wild type protein. Overall, our data indicate that β1i is a potential therapeutic target in prostate cancer. Further medicinal chemistry efforts will be required develop UK-101 into a truly selective proteasome inhibitor.

(1994) Use of bauxite refining residue to reduce the mobility of heavy metals in municipal waste compost. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 1994. http://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/101/.

Abstract:
Use of bauxite refining residue to reduce the mobility of heavy metals in municipal waste compost. Due to the adverse environmental impact of landfills and the lack of space for nearby population centres an unprecedented interest has developed in waste recycling with the objective to reduce the volume of waste disposed. Generally organic matter represents the largest fraction in the domestic waste stream including food, garden and paper waste. In the past efforts have been made to process this organic fraction into muniapal compost. However contamination of the compost with heavy metals has in many cases resulted in the lack of suitable markets and subsequent closure of compost facilities. A study was undertaken and aimed at reducing the concentration and mobility of heavy metals in municipal compost. Bauxite refining residue ha; a high capacity to immobilise metals in soils through precipitation, cation exchange and chemisorption (Fe- and Al- oxides). The first step in the study was to assess the metal adsorption capacity of red mud by equilibrating red mud with metal solutions. Metal removal from solution proved very high. Subsequently, the effect of red mud addition to municipal compost was studied in relation to metal mobility. In particular the interaction of metals with the mobile soluble organic fraction, the humic and fulvic acids, was investigated. It was found that most metals remained in the insoluble humin fraction and the metals in solution remained complexed to the soluble organic fraction. Red mud appeared to be able to adsorp fulvic and humic acids and thus indirectly immobilise the metals in solution. Red mud did not appear to be able to transfer metals from the organic fraction to the mineral red mud fraction. ft was kypothesised that, in order for the metals to be adsorped to red mud, the red mud needed to be present in the organic waste prior to composting. Metal adsorption to red mud is a rapid chemical reaction while metal complexation to the organic fraction takes a number of weeks, since it must be sufficiently oxidised to contain functional groups. In order to verify this hypothesis, an installation with seven incubators was developed which allowed composting to be undertaken under computer controlled conditions and monitored for temperature, airflow and carbon dioxide respiration. The incubators were filled with 10 kg of a mixture of grass clippings and sawdust. The first incubator functioned as a control. The contents of the rest of the incubators were spiked with the following metals: Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. In addition the contents of the 3rd - 7th incubators were amended with an increasing percentage of red mud, respectively 10,20,25,30 and 40 % by weight. After the mixture was composted, the metal mobility was reduced by approx. 80 - 99 %, depending on the metal. The mobility was assessed as leachable and plant available in relation to the total metal content. Red mud did not affect the composting process if < 40% red mud was added. The next step was to compost municipal organic waste in a pilot plant (capacity 5 m3) using batches with and without red mud. Mixed waste was collected from 150 households and the glass, metal and plastic fractions were removed bx- manual sorting. The rest was composted. The red mud - compost had a relatively lower metal content and a reduced metal mobility compared to compost without red mud. The red mud - compost also had a 300 times higher pH buffer capacity and 90%less soluble organic matter. The addition of red mud prior to composting was found to reduce the concentration and mobility of metals in compost, improve the quality of compost as a soil conditioner, increased the resistance of the organic fraction against further breakdown and this process thus adds value to both red mud and organic waste.

Abstract:
It was shown that LS310 is 2.3 times more resistant to cisplatin and shows a 50% reduction in MLH1 expression when compared to LS274 (p < 0.001). It was demonstrated that the hMLH1 promoter region of LS310 exhibited methylation whereas the LS274 promoter region did not. Neither of these lines exhibited methylation of the p16, MINT 25 or DAPK loci suggesting that de novo methylation was not responsible for the methylation specific PCR results. Further work demonstrated that treatment of the LS310 cell line with the demethylating agent decitabine increased its cisplatin sensitivity as well as increasing the level of MLH1 expression of the cell line. No such changes were demonstrated in the LS274 cell line after treatment with decitabine. In summary, this research project was limited by the availability of samples. However it has demonstrated that collaborative multidisciplinary prospective planned translational research can be done and emphasises the need for a translational component to be an integral part of future lung cancer studies.

Gray, Jennifer Mary Knightley. "A study of Babylonian goal-year planetary astronomy." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/101/.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the Late Babylonian Period, Mesopotamian astronomers made nightly observations of the planets, Moon and stars. Based on these observations, they developed several different techniques for predicting future astronomical events. The present study aims to improve our understanding of a particular empirical method of prediction, which made use of planetary periods – a period of time over which a planet‘s motion recurs very closely – to predict that planet‘s future motion. Various planetary periods are referred to in many Late Babylonian astronomical texts. By collecting together these periods and analysing their effectiveness, it was found that, generally, the most effective of the planetary periods were those which were used in the production of a particular type of text known as a Goal-Year Text. The Goal-Year Texts contain excerpts of astronomical observational records, with the planetary records having been taken from particular observation years with these planetary periods in mind – such that each planet‘s motion will recur during the same, specific, future year. It has been suggested that they form an intermediate step towards the compilation of the non-mathematical predictive texts known as Almanacs and Normal Star Almanacs. An analysis of theoretically calculated dates of planetary events showed that, if the Goal-Year Texts were to be used as a source for making empirical predictions, particular corrections (specific to each planet) would need to be applied to the dates of the planetary records found in the Goal-Year Texts. These corrections take the form of regular corrections to the day of an event (a ―date correction‖), and more irregular corrections of ±1 month (a ―month shift‖). An extensive investigation of the Babylonian non-mathematical texts demonstrated that the observed differences in the dates of events, when comparing equivalent records in all known extant Almanacs and Normal Star Almanacs with those in the Goal-Year Texts, were extremely consistent with theoretical expectations. This lends considerable support to the theory that the Goal-Year Texts‘ records formed the ―raw data‖ used in the compilation of the Almanacs and Normal Star Almanacs. It was also possible to analyse several other aspects of Late Babylonian non-mathematical astronomy during the course of this study. These topics include the usage of particular stars in the predictive texts, the meaning of certain terminology found in records of the Babylonian zodiacal signs, and the specific issues related to the planet Mercury‘s periods of visibility and invisibility. Therefore, this investigation enhances many aspects of our knowledge of Late Babylonian astronomical practices.

Harris, Margaret. "The work and organisation of local churches and synagogues : four English congregations in the 1990s." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1994. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/101/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about the work and organisation of local religious congregations in England. It focuses on the congregation of two religions- Christianity and Judaism; that is, on 'churches' and 'synagogues'. In Chapter One, the study is positioned within the academic field of social policy and administration. Chapters Two, Three and Four review literature on the historical and societal context within which churches and synagogues operate, the role of religious functionaries and organisational features of congregations. Four organisational themes cutting across denominational and religious boundaries are identified: purposes and goals; roles and role relationships; organisational change; and denominational institutions. Chapter Five develops an approach for an empirical study and gives an account of fieldwork in an inner-city Roman Catholic church; a black-led Pentecostal church in an industrial town; an Anglican church on a housing estate; and a suburban Reform synagogue. Organisational features of the four case congregations are presented in Chapter Six. In the following four chapters the organisational issues which arise in the Congregations are described and analysed. Chapter Seven presents the perceived Issues in congregations around setting and implementing goals. Chapter Eight looks at clerical roles and Chapter Nine at the roles of lay employees and volunteers. Chapter Ten discusses organisational change, the links between congregations and their denominational institutions, and organisational structures. Finally, in Chapter Eleven, the study findings are drawn together and re-examined in the light of the earlier literature. The way in which the case studies elucidate and develop knowledge about the work and organisation of congregations is discussed. It is suggested that further progress towards the development of theory on congregation organisation could be made by conceptualising congregations as voluntary organisations.

Al-Talabani, Abdulbasit. "Automatic Speech Emotion Recognition : feature space dimensionality and classification challenges." Thesis, University of Buckingham, 2015. http://bear.buckingham.ac.uk/101/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last decade, research in Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) has become a major endeavour in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), and speech processing. Accurate SER is essential for many applications, like assessing customer satisfaction with quality of services, and detecting/assessing emotional state of children in care. The large number of studies published on SER reflects the demand for its use. The main concern of this thesis is the investigation of SER from a pattern recognition and machine learning points of view. In particular, we aim to identify appropriate mathematical models of SER and examine the process of designing automatic emotion recognition schemes. There are major challenges to automatic SER including ambiguity about the list/definition of emotions, the lack of agreement on a manageable set of uncorrelated speech-based emotion relevant features, and the difficulty of collected emotion-related datasets under natural circumstances. We shall initiate our work by dealing with the identification of appropriate sets of emotion related features/attributes extractible from speech signals as considered from psychological and computational points of views. We shall investigate the use of pattern-recognition approaches to remove redundancies and achieve compactification of digital representation of the extracted data with minimal loss of information. The thesis will include the design of new or complement existing SER schemes and conduct large sets of experiments to empirically test their performances on different databases, identify advantages, and shortcomings of using speech alone for emotion recognition. Existing SER studies seem to deal with the ambiguity/dis-agreement on a “limited” number of emotion-related features by expanding the list from the same speech signal source/sites and apply various feature selection procedures as a mean of reducing redundancies. Attempts are made to discover more relevant features to emotion from speech. One of our investigations focuses on proposing a newly sets of features for SER, extracted from Linear Predictive (LP)-residual speech. We shall demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed relatively small set of features by testing the performance of an SER scheme that is based on fusing our set of features with the existing set of thousands of features using common machine learning schemes of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The challenge of growing dimensionality of SER feature space and its impact on increased model complexity is another major focus of our research project. By studying the pros and cons of the commonly used feature selection approaches, we argued in favour of meta-feature selection and developed various methods in this direction, not only to reduce dimension, but also to adapt and de-correlate emotional feature spaces for improved SER model recognition accuracy. We used rincipal Component Analysis (PCA) and proposed Data Independent PCA (DIPCA) by training on independent emotional and non-emotional datasets. The DIPCA projections, especially when extracted from speech data coloured with different emotions or from Neutral speech data, had comparable capability to the PCA in terms of SER performance. Another adopted approach in this thesis for dimension reduction is the Random Projection (RP) matrices, independent of training data. We have shown that some versions of RP with SVM classifier can offer an adaptation space for Speaker Independent SER that avoid over-fitting and hence improves recognition accuracy. Using PCA trained on a set of data, while testing on emotional data features, has significant implication for machine learning in general. The thesis other major contribution focuses on the classification aspects of SER. We investigate the drawbacks of the well-known SVM classifier when applied to a preprocessed data by PCA and RP. We shall demonstrate the advantages of using the Linear Discriminant Classifier (LDC) instead especially for PCA de-correlated metafeatures. We initiated a variety of LDC-based ensembles classification, to test performance of scheme using a new form of bagging different subsets of metafeature subsets extracted by PCA with encouraging results. The experiments conducted were applied on two benchmark datasets (Emo-Berlin and FAU-Aibo), and an in-house dataset in the Kurdish language. Recognition accuracy achieved by are significantly higher than the state of art results on all datasets. The results, however, revealed a difficult challenge in the form of persisting wide gap in accuracy over different datasets, which cannot be explained entirely by the differences between the natures of the datasets. We conducted various pilot studies that were based on various visualizations of the confusion matrices for the “difficult” databases to build multi-level SER schemes. These studies provide initial evidences to the presence of more than one “emotion” in the same portion of speech. A possible solution may be through presenting recognition accuracy in a score-based measurement like the spider chart. Such an approach may also reveal the presence of Doddington zoo phenomena in SER.

Spicer, Paul Edward. "On orthogonal polynomials and related discrete integrable systems." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/101/.

Full text
Abstract:
Orthogonal polynomials arise in many areas of mathematics and have been the subject of interest by many mathematicians. In recent years this interest has often arisen from outside the orthogonal polynomial community after their connection with integrable systems was found. This thesis is concerned with the different ways these connections can occur. We approach the problem from both perspectives, by looking for integrable structures in orthogonal polynomials and by using an integrable structure to relate different classes of orthogonal polynomials. In Chapter 2, we focus on certain classes of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials. For the classical orthogonal polynomials, the recurrence relations and differential equations are well known and easy to calculate explicitly using an orthogonality relation or generating function. However with semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, the recurrence coefficients can no longer be expressed in an explicit form, but instead obeys systems of non-linear difference equations. These systems are derived by deriving compatibility relations between the recurrence relation and the differential equation. The compatibility problem can be approached in two ways; the first is the direct approach using the orthogonality relation, while the second introduces the Laguerre method, which derives a differential system for semi-classical orthogonal polynomials. We consider some semiclassical Hermite and Laguerre weights using the Laguerre method, before applying both methods to a semi-classical Jacobi weight. While some of the systems derived will have been seen before, most of them (at least not to our knowledge) have not been acquired from this approach. Chapter 3 considers a singular integral transform that is related to the Gel’fand-Levitan equation, which provides the inverse part of the inverse scattering method (a solution method of integrable systems). These singular integral transforms constitute a dressing method between elementary (bare) solutions of an integrable system to more complicated solutions of the same system. In the context of this thesis we are interested in adapting this method to the case of polynomial solutions and study dressing transforms between different families of polynomials, in particular between certain classical orthogonal polynomials and their semi-classical deformations. In chapter 4, a new class of orthogonal polynomials are considered from a formal approach: a family of two-variable orthogonal polynomials related through an elliptic curve. The formal approach means we are interested in those relations that can be derived, without specifying a weight function. Thus, we are mainly concerned with recursive structures, particularly on their explicit derivation so that a series of elliptic polynomials can be constructed. Using generalized Sylvester identities, recurrence relations are derived and we consider the consistency of their coefficients and the compatibility between the two relations. Although the chapter focuses on the structure of the recurrence relations, some applications are also presented.

Abstract:
Third party compliant reporting standards govern how mining companies must disclose technical information concerning their mineral assets. These reporting standards apply to any public issuer. Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (MRMR) are critical in the determination of the mineral asset base as well as the market value of a mining company. Moreover, companies must present a qualifying technical report in accordance with existing reporting standards as a necessary step, required by lenders and financial institutions. This is a required step prior to finalizing any financial deal publicly or, in some cases, privately. This research examines issues with public reporting specifically as it involves industrial minerals and the challenges this sector faces getting the same recognition as other mineral commodities by the approving institutions. Different perspectives with regard to main elements of the reporting standards are presented. The efficiency of reporting standards is reviewed based on the findings of the interviews. These findings prepare the ground for further discussion on what needs to be improved, and how these changes could be achieved. Industrial mineral companies are facing serious challenges in terms of gaining capital. They have to compete not only with other mining companies working with other mineral commodities, but also with all public companies in other industries that are seeking investment dollars. A better understanding of the investment community’s decision making process and improvements to communication with investors increases the probability of gaining investment capital. This research examines the main indicators that investors review to evaluate an industrial mineral project. These indicators include MRMR that are the principal basis for the value of any mining company, the reputation of the management team which is built over time in a succession of achievements, and finally cost structure and future cost of development which are crucial to the future prosperity of company. This research further provides insight into the invisible link between public reporting of industrial minerals and investor confidence. The analysis presented here is based on 34 interviews conducted with experts from Canada, Australia, the UK, South Africa, and the USA.

We will discuss about the representations of Flavius Josephus from his autobiographical work Vita, and how it has defined and consolidated the perception of self representation of the author. The historical context in which it belonged should be considered. It is about to observe the Judean environment that preceded the Jewish Revolt marked by social, economic and political conflicts, as these were crucial for that the clash between Romans and Jews occurred. Therefore, we noted the surge of the Jewish Revolt, and also the participation of Josephus at that war. In this sense, Josephus experiences in the Revolt are recurrent due to own unfolding of the conflict as he experienced the different sides of the war and witnessed the Roman victory beside them. This way, we will consider the relevance of Josephus' Vita as it was a work that approached the Revolt in a personal perspective, and from it, his memories were highlighted in a constructive process of narrative argumentations, making them the key elements in the very representation of Josephus' impressions. We understand how Josephus' autobiographical speech expresses his own demands of his contemporary, from the relation between narrative, memory, representation and identity.
