Abstract:
Mulberry plants have wide range of variations in characters in view of its adaptability to cross pollination with no inter-specific reproduction barrier rendering it a heterozygous species. Every plant being different from the other in natural population, this great diversity makes it difficult to gather information and carry out studies on effect of different edaphic factors on the expression of genotypic characters for adjudging the variations. In lieu of this known diversity for posterity, the collection of mulberry genotypes from diverse genetic sources, their conservation, evaluation and consequent documentation is of prime importance. In the present study, 69 mulberry accessions were characterized for morphology, anatomy, and reproductive parameters. Evaluation for propagation, growth and yield characters were also carried out. Based on multiple trait analysis, 14 top performing accessions viz., MI-0879, MI-0882, MI-0908, MI-0931, MI-0907, MI-0940, MI-0881, MI-0941, MI0892, MI-0913, MI-0937, MI-0934, MI-0865, MI-0886 were identified. These accessions could serve as resources for further evaluation aimed at trait-specific crop improvement.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Methods for quantifying emotional dream content have been developed. These approaches have yielded significant insights into dream content, their relation to waking cognition, and mental health. The current dream rating scale was developed to improve upon previous approaches by conceptualizing the scale based on the known fundamental affective neuronal circuits within the brain. Methods Seventy-seven items were developed representing fundamental emotions (SEEKING, RAGE, FEAR, LUST, CARE, GRIEF and PLAY). One-hundred dreams were randomly selected from a dream database (www.dream-bank.net). To determine interrater agreement, two raters scored all 77-items for each of the 100 dreams based on if the emotional content was present or not. Items with an interrater agreement (kappa) below .5 were excluded. Nightmares (i.e., extremely unpleasant or disturbing dreams) were independently identified by a sleep-trauma expert and compared to non-nightmares for the 7 scales. Results Thirty-three items (kappa > 0.5; range .5-.82) were retained for the final scale. Of the items retained, 29 (85%) were endorsed in 10% or more of dreams. The most frequently identified items in the final scale were danger (44%) and fear (45%). Seven emotional dream scales were apriori identified with 3-9 items each being retained in the final scales. Scales were significantly correlated between raters (r = .54 to .88, p< .001). Across the 100 dreams FEAR was the highest endorsed emotion scale while GRIEF was lowest. As expected, nightmares had significantly elevated scores compared to non-nightmares on the FEAR, RAGE, SEEKING and GRIEF scales (p< .001) but not CARE, LUST, or PLAY. Conclusion This dream rating scale based on mammalian emotional circuits previously identified through affective neuroscience shows promise for quantifying and understanding the emotional content of dreams. Future studies will need to further validate this preliminary affective dream content scale using different populations including individuals exposed to trauma and those with mental health and sleep disorders to determine its clinical utility. "Development and validation of a new instrument to measure perceived risks associated with the use of tobacco and nicotine-containing products." Abstract:
Making tobacco products associated with lower risks available to smokers who would otherwise continue smoking is recognized as an important strategy towards addressing smoking-related harm. Predicting use behavior is an important major component of product risk assessment. In this context, risk perception is a possible factor driving tobacco product uptake and use. As prior to market launch real-world actual product use cannot be observed, assessing risk perception can provide predictive information. Considering the lack of suitable validated self-report instruments, the development of a new instrument was undertaken to quantify perceived risks of tobacco and nicotine-containing products by adult smokers, former smokers and never-smokers. Initial items were constructed based on a literature review, focus groups and expert opinion. Data for scale formation and assessment were obtained through two successive US-based web surveys (n=2020 and 1640 completers, respectively). Psychometric evaluation was based on Rasch Measurement Theory and Classical Test Theory. Psychometric evaluation supported the formation of an 18-item Perceived Health Risk scale and a 7-item Perceived Addiction Risk scale: item response option thresholds were ordered correctly for all items; item locations in each scale were spread out (coverage range 75-87%); scale reliability was supported by high person separation indices > 0.93, Cronbach's alpha > 0.98 and Corrected Item-Total Correlations > 0.88; and no differential item functioning was present. Construct validity evaluations met expectations through inter-scale correlations and findings from known-group comparisons. The Perceived Risk Instrument is a psychometrically robust instrument applicable for general and personal risk perception measurement, for use in different types of products (including cigarettes, nicotine replacement therapy, potential Modified Risk Tobacco Products), and for different status groups (i.e., current smokers with and without intention to quit, former smokers, never smokers).

Abstract:
Post-translational modifications (PTMs) to histone proteins play important roles in the regulation of gene expression. Histone lysine demethylases (KDMs) remove methyl groups from N?-amino methylated lysine residues. There are two classes of human KDMs; the flavin adenosine dinucleotide-dependent demethylases (the KDM1 subfamily) and the 2-oxoglutarate- (2OG) dependent Jumonji C (JmjC) demethylases (KDM2-7). Misregulation and mutation of histone demethylases are associated with multiple human diseases including cancer. Hence potent and selective inhibitors are of interest for investigations into the biological roles of KDMs and their relevance as targets for drug discovery. JmjC KDM inhibitors have been reported in the literature but there are few subfamily selective examples. The aim of the work described in this thesis was to design and synthesise potent and subfamily selective inhibitors of human JmjC KDMs for use as chemical probes. An aminomethyl pyridine-4-carboxylate series that was derived from a high throughput screening hit delivered a selective, submicromolar KDM2A inhibitor. X-ray crystallographic analyses demonstrated that the aminomethyl pyridine moiety bound the active site iron revealing a novel JmjC KDM inhibitor scaffold. A known 2,2'-bipyridine-4-carboxylate scaffold was used as a starting point for the identification of a second, novel JmjC KDM inhibitor series that contains a triazolopyridine moiety as a replacement for the bipyridine system. The triazolopyridine core was shown to bind in the 2OG binding site of KDM4A by X-ray crystallography. Optimisation of the triazole substituent gave a selective inhibitor of KDM2A/7B that is significantly more potent (KDM2A IC50: 58 nM, KDM7B IC50: 150 nM) than reported KDM2/7 subfamily selective inhibitors. As for many other JmjC KDM inhibitors, this compound was not found to be efficacious in a cellular assay. A variety of strategies were pursued with the aim of improving the cellular efficacy. However, only a modest effect was observed in the cellular assay (less than 25% inhibition at 100 μM). A biotinylated analogue was immobilised onto streptavidin-coated beads for chemoproteomics experiments and was found to interact with KDM2A in cell lysate. Overall, this work resulted in the identification of two new scaffolds for JmjC KDM inhibition and in a potent and selective inhibitor of KDM2A/7B.

Full text
Abstract:
With the continued proliferation of mobile devices, the collection of information associated with such devices and their users - such as location, installed applications and cookies associated with built-in browsers - has become increasingly straightforward. By analysing such information, organisations are often able to deliver more relevant and better focused advertisements. Although such Targeted Mobile Advertising (TMA) offers great benefits to advertisers, it gives rise to a number of concerns, with privacy-related concerns being prominent amongst them. It follows that there is a need for an advertisement-selection mechanism that can support the existing TMA business model in a manner that takes into account consumers' privacy concerns. The research described in this dissertation explores the delicate balance between the goals of the advertisers and the consumers: advertisers pursue profits by applying TMA, which violates consumers' privacy; consumers hope to benefit from useful mobile advertisements without compromising their personal information. The conflicts of interests between consumers and advertisers in the context of targeted mobile advertising brings us to our research question: Is it possible to develop a privacy-preserving TMA framework that enables mobile users to take advantage of useful advertising services without their privacy being compromised, and without impacting significantly advertising effectiveness? In order to answer this question, this dissertation presents four main contributions. First, we report upon the result of a qualitative study to discuss the balance that needs to be struck between privacy and utility in this emerging area. Second, a number of formal models are developed to reason about privacy, as well as to reason about the relationship between privacy and utility in the context of TMA. Third, a novel ad-selection architecture, PPTMA (Privacy-Preserving Targeted Mobile Advertising), is presented and evaluated. Finally, a privacy-preserving advertisement-selection mechanism, AdSelector, is introduced. The mechanism is novel in its combination of a user subscription mechanism, a two-stage ad-selection process, and the application of a trustworthy billing system.

Thompson, Neil. PR-186-0936-R01 Determine the Effectiveness of the -850 mV On-Potential Criterion for Cathodic Protection. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), May 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010777.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, data for two pipelines were analyzed and the effectiveness of the on-potential criterion was compared to that for the off-potential criterion for those pipelines. Review of the literature for conditions where the on-potential criterion is applicable resulted in a discussion of the complexities of applying on-potential and off-potential criteria, including situations for which the on-potential and off-potential may not provide accurate measurements. The majority of the effort was placed on establishing a methodology to be used in conjunction with the on-potential criterion to verify its effectiveness.
