Abstract:
Abstract Background/purpose Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor. Sex has been shown to be an important prognostic factor for GBM. The purpose of this study was to develop and independently validate sex-specific nomograms for estimation of individualized GBM survival probabilities using data from 2 independent NRG Oncology clinical trials. Methods This analysis included information on 752 (NRG/RTOG 0525) and 599 (NRG/RTOG 0825) patients with newly diagnosed GBM. The Cox proportional hazard models by sex were developed using NRG/RTOG 0525 and significant variables were identified using a backward selection procedure. The final selected models by sex were then independently validated using NRG/RTOG 0825. Results Final nomograms were built by sex. Age at diagnosis, KPS, MGMT promoter methylation and location of tumor were common significant predictors of survival for both sexes. For both sexes, tumors in the frontal lobes had significantly better survival than tumors of multiple sites. Extent of resection, and use of corticosteroids were significant predictors of survival for males. Conclusions A sex specific nomogram that assesses individualized survival probabilities (6-, 12- and 24-months) for patients with GBM could be more useful than estimation of overall survival as there are factors that differ between males and females. Abstract:
The expansion of [18F]-radiolabelling methodologies is vital for the advancement of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) as a medical imaging tool. Novel protocols will simplify access to current PET tracers and allow development of original tracers, potentially enhancing the imaging quality or permit imaging of a wider range of clinical problems. A general introduction is presented in Chapter 1, covering PET, application of fluorine-19 in the pharmaceutical industry, the production of fluorine-18 and the current state-of -art for [18F]-radiolabelling. The results chapters are divided in to two parts; Part 1 (Chapters 2 - 4) concern the synthesis of [18F]fluoroarenes and Part II (Chapters 5 and 6) discuss diversity oriented radiofluorination techniques, targeting novel [18F]motifs. In Part I, Chapter 2 describes the use of hypervalent iodine reagents to meditate an umpolung approach for fluorination and radiofluorination of N-arylsulfonamides and anilides. Chapter 3 again utilises hypervalent iodine reagents, but as spirocyclic iodonium(III) ylide precursors, being applied to semi-automated and automated microfluidic conditions. Chapter 4 discusses the development of conditions for the production and isolation of radiopharmaceuticals employing Cu(II)-mediated radiofluorination of aryl boronic pinacol esters. In Part II, Chapter 5 discusses the applicability of halogen exchange reactions to reach polyfluorinated motfis and Chapter 6 focuses on the application of a single diazo precursor to access three polyfluorinated motifs with single-step reactions. Finally, Chapter 7 provides experimental data for compounds discussed in this thesis.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the Bibliotheca of Photius of Constantinople (IX A. D. ), an heterogeneous collection of bio-bibliographical notes and extracts from Greek authors. We have studied the geographical interest coming out in many chapters of this work, and particularly in chapters 213 and 250, regarding Agatharchides of Cnidus (II B. C. ) and his treaty On the Erythraean Sea. Our work articulates in three parts. The first one is an introduction to Agatharchides and to its production (we have drown attention especially on the Asia of this author and on its role of source for Diodorus of Sicily). The second part deals with the text: it consists of an Italian translation of chapters 213 and 250 (the first one since that of G. Compagnoni, 1836) and a synopsis between Photius’ extracts of the work On the Erythraean Sea, book V and Diodorus’ reuse of the same materials (Bibliotheca Historica, book III). The third part exposes the results of this work: a study of geography as a discipline, based on a research on the first occurrences of the Greek word geographia and on its evolution; an examination of Photius’ interest in geographical subjects; an analysis of the structure of the Bibliotheca based on the data of the synopsis. The nature of chapter 250 allows to cast the light on the real nature of the reading notes composing the Bibliotheca: they are not simply pieces of information and mere extracts, but most of all they are materials coming from a teaching activity, whose composition is the result of a lifetime of study

Abstract:
A system for co-injecting mixtures of diesel fuel and water into a heavy-duty diesel engine has been developed and evaluated at the Southwest Research Institute. This system features prototype Lucas EUI injectors, full electronic control, and can vary the percentage of water in the mixture on a cycle-resolved basis. Tests of this system were conducted on a production Volvo D-12 engine, and have produced very encouraging results. Water-diesel co-injection yielded a considerable improvement in NOx-smoke and NOx-BSFC trade-offs under steady-state engine operation. In addition, control of the water percentage on a cycle-resolved basis was shown to be an effective method for mitigating NOx and smoke emissions over step-load transients. Results from this work show that a combination of aggressive EGR and diesel+water co-injection is very promising for producing very low levels of engine-out exhaust emissions, reducing the water storage requirements, and improving fuel efficiency. Further refinement of this injection technology is in progress.

Full text
Abstract:
The CP criteria for buried piping systems are not consistent in different global CP standards. For instance, the standard of the International Standard Organization (ISO) and the European standard (EN) offer more specific CP criteria with respect to environmental conditions such as soil resistivity, aeration, presence of bacteria, pipe temperature and overprotection. However, they do not have the -850 mV on-potential criterion contained in the NACE Standard SP 0169-2007. The Australian National Standard (SAA) recommends the use of coupons or an electrical resistance (ER) probe in conjunction with the -850 mV off-potential or the 100 mV polarization criterion, which was not included in the above standards. Based on operators experience, the current CP criteria in the NACE Standard SP 169-2007 may not always assure that pipes are effectively protected and some pipe/soil environments may require alternative criteria such as those in other global standards. This effort aimed to collect and analyze available global CP criteria and data to better understand why and when the NACE Standard SP0169 criteria are effective. By compiling and reviewing global CP criteria along with field and laboratory data, the report provides recommendations on evaluation of the -850 mV on-potential criterion, the -850 mV off-potential criterion, the potential criteria in high resistivity soils, the 100 mV polarization criterion, and CP criteria with elevated temperatures and bacteria. It also discusses how the joint use of monitoring and inspection devices with the effective use of CP criteria may affect how appreciate the significance of CP criteria in pipeline external corrosion control and the overall pipeline integrity management. Significant research is still needed to understand the effectiveness of CP criteria from a fundamental perspective. Mathematical modeling of a pipeline CP system with consideration of both the temporal and spatial variations of the pipe potential and corrosion rate and solution chemistry near the pipe surface should be performed. This would provide a broad understanding of the effectiveness of CP criteria from both macro and micro scales.
