Abstract This is a self-narrative describing my search for my inner-self and understanding. It was through my own personal experience with domestic violence that I was able to find my inner-self and to reestablish my link with other people, my culture and my society. I was born and raised in a middle class family in Tainan, a city located in southern Taiwan. After growing up and following the rules my culture and society dictated that a woman should follow I eventually ended up as a single mother after an unsuccessful marriage came to an end. The purpose of this narrative is to reconstruct my story, of how my journey to find and understand my inner-self led me to discover renewed strength in my value and love of life. Chapter one will describe the purpose and my motivation for this narrative and the research method used. I choose the narrative method as a way to describe many of the events in my life which are known only to myself and a few others. Self-narrative is also a way to describe how I have grown in knowledge and found meaning in life. Chapter two is the story of my marriage as if it were a long, difficult journey. It describes where I came from, what were my beliefs and values and how I got married, had children, worked and eventually was separated and divorced. Despite all these difficulties today I have a loving and harmonious family. Chapter three is a narrative describing my inner journey after my divorce. I attended and participated in workshops, classes and seminars in order to experience and learn from my inner self and about my relationship to society. Through narrative I describe how I was able find people I loved and who cherished me in return in order to find value in my life story. My self-narrative concludes with chapter five. It describes how I was able to transform my inner growth and experiences into the art works I have created. My purpose is to show that even out of tragedy and difficult circumstances beautiful things can result. I hope this is another step toward ending discrimination against women and that it could be a source of inspiration for those suffering from domestic violence. Key words: self-narrative, domestic violence, feminism

This is a self-narrative thesis of a fisherman’s daughter. First I gathered bits and pieces of my life stories. I, then, tried my best to string them together and weave them into a net of life which spans to include the past, the present, and the future of my life. In this particular net, we can see that various strands of life—such as the threads of gender, city-country difference, ethnicity, language, culture, society, community, environment, human relationships, value system, history, education, class, politics, and nationalism—are woven and intertwined. By telling my own life stories, I penetrated into my inner life, exploring and savoring feelings of inferiority complex, passion, self-censure, fear, friendship, frustration, curiosity, etc. Upon witnessing Taiwan history and life, the rupture of culture, the alienation from ocean culture, and the collision of different cultures, all these experiences helped expose the feelings of uneasiness, attachment, anger, nurture, and self-reflection, re-define my own existence, and re-fashion my subjectivity. In the Section “the founding moment,” I recounted the moment I entered the graduate program of Life Studies, revealed my motivation of writing a self-narrative thesis, and gave reasons to my choice of methodology. In the “Prologue,” I gave an explanation of the thesis title—“‘Fish•Sea’ Life.” In Chapter One, I wrote about my growing environment and family in my childhood. In Chapter Two, I examined the formation of my self-identity under the influence of culture, language, education, and society. In Chapter Three, I looked back on the stories of my life and described the major events I have experienced in my life. In Chapter Four, I wrote about my motherhood and pre-school education work experiences. Chapter Five is about the practice of the non-profit organization “StoryCorps” that I have encountered in the United States. In Chapter Six, I looked into my life stories by using the perspective of narrative discourse. In the meantime, I reflected upon the formation of my life narrative during the whole writing process. In the end, I was able to develop a unique “Fish‧Sea” narrative perspective. In Chapter Seven, I revealed my intention to keep on my odyssey of life discovery by means of not only reading and writing but also listening and speaking. The purpose of this thesis is to experiment with the writing process of self-narrative. My conclusion is as follows: I have a better grasp of my life and my life value by way of self-narrative. At the same time, I am better equipped with the ability to march to the future to the beat of my inner drummer. Through my life story, I was able to see the tie between outer context and my life. Through my life story, I was able to generate a wish—that is, the need to cultivate the ability to listen to each other in Taiwan’s society; to create the environment for general public to recount the life stories with respect to their individual life, family, ethnic groups, social groups, and national identity.

This paper investigates my life experience through the self-narration and I proceed through three aspects: school life, family and my childhood. First, I recorded the stories that happened in the past and wrote down the feeling that I felt at that time. After noting down the stories, I examined and analyzed these incidents again. Furthermore, the new findings coming out through the group discussion and reading are presented. In the final section, I presented how these events changed me. By recording, discussing and clarifying the stories of my life experience, I had chance to know the stories more clearly and accurately and realized how these events influenced me. Through the process of narration, I not only realized myself more but also had chance to know the people well by a new point of view. Moreover, the process made me be able to have a better relationship with others and improve my living situation. Nowadays, I know myself more clearly through this study and know how to deal with incidents happened in the daily life skillfully and properly. Mover over, I expect this new skill can help me face the challenges confidently in my future life
