Abstract: Yoga is one of the six philosophical schools of India and in this text is understood as a path, a life's philosophy supported by ethics, philosophical and technical principles. At recent decades, an increase in the number of practitioners have been observed and also the development of many Yoga teachers' courses. The recent condition of this new profession makes these teachers a group that needs to be studied. In this circumstance, the goal of this research was to investigate these professional's trajectory, as well as the life's implications of this professional path. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research was conducted in which semi-structured interviews were used to investigate the trajectory of twelve yoga's teachers of Campinas city. The interviews were transcribed and the data's analysis was done with the support of an analysis' trajectory model constructed through the systematic literature review. These speeches demonstrated that this professional choice leads to disruptions on several life's aspects. They also suggest that the basis of this career choice is beyond the financial return or professional stability, and stand as a way to satisfy ontological needs. Eastern practices have an increasing presence in Western locations of human services, such as mental health, hospitals, non-profits, prisons, K-12 education, among others. This trend includes the university and pedagogies of first year writing. The application of Eastern contemplative practice helps some people in certain circumstances, but its use raises questions. In the university classroom, methods like mindfulness meditation and yoga may offer perspectives that inform pedagogy. But, these interventions often lack concrete applicability to course content, oversimplify theoretical foundation of the original Eastern practices, and seem disparate from, rather than integral to, standard curriculum. My dissertation analyzes how yogic practice is already embedded in the discipline of composition and rhetoric. By resignifying rhetorical scholarship as yogic, I shape a new and amalgamated conception of agency deploying yogic and Western perspectives. I call this yogic agency. By constructing, defining, and unraveling the function of yogic agency in the writing classroom, I extract, analyze, and refigure the yogic philosophy and practice as always and already underlying scholarship of composition and rhetoric. My dissertation integrates yogic and rhetorical perspectives into one. I aim to sharpen and clarify of the role of yoga, as well as other alternative Eastern frameworks, in the Western writing classroom. There is sometimes an assumption that yoga is a pedagogical intervention replacing less effective teaching methods. This operates on the notion that our field is in a position of deficit. Instead, I generate yogic agency to illustrate the feeling of having control of one’s worldview as a means to embody a way of perceiving that one already has everything within in order to become rhetorical agents of one’s own life. I am not presenting a new way of teaching and learning but rather, a pronounced vision of the discipline as yoga surfaces within its theories.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleBackground: More than 300 million people in the world suffer from depression, which creates a great deal suffering. The psychiatric health care system should work according to a holistic approach and the nurse should support the patient's self-care ability. Yoga and mindfulness have shown to have a health-promoting effect on many somatic states. Aim: To describe the importance of yoga and mindfulness for patients with depression. Method: Literature review based on ten scientific articles with qualitative, quantitative and mixed design. Data was analyzed based on the Wittenmore and Knafls (2005) method for integrative content analysis. Results: The result of the yoga's significance resulted in two themes; “Internal Process” and “Recovery” and eight categories; Coping tools, Empowerment, Depressive symptoms, Knowledge and competence, Mental change, Physical health, Holistic experience and Perceived difficulties. The yoga was experienced as a coping tool for symptom relief and led to increased internal strength and empowerment. It reduced the depressive symptoms. The participants gained knowledge of how the body and mind interact and they gained an increased self-acceptance. Yoga training provided peace and relaxation as well as physical health improvements. Many experienced a sense of belonging and to be part of a larger context. Experienced difficulties were physical limitations, concentration difficulties, internal pressures, poor conscience and planning. Discussion: The results are discussed based on Phil Barker's Tide Model and relevant research.

Abstract: The overall objective of this research is to study the phenomenon of subtle human physiology, or human multidimensional anatomy (Gerber, 1988), and the specific objective is to observe whether the perception of this physiology is possible through the practice of Yoga. For the Yoga the human being consists of subtle energy structures called Chacras, Nadis and Koshas.
Pham, Kim Hoang. „Outcomes of a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention on prison inmates' spiritual well-being“. Thesis, San Jose State University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1541558.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this research was to analyze a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention, the Sanatana Yoga Prison Project (SYPP), at a California state prison. The SYPP had three interventions: pranayama (breathing techniques), asana (physical postures), and dhyana (meditation). The research question was, "What are the outcomes of a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention on prison inmates' spiritual well-being?" This study used a mixed-method approach that included a modified Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), demographic data sheet, and semi-structured interviews that were face-to-face and audio-recorded. There were 31 participants in the control group and 31 participants in the experimental group. Spiritual Wellbeing (SWB) scores were analyzed using the SWBS manual and SPSS 20. The results indicated significant difference between the groups. That is, the experiment group scored high on SWB compared to the control group that scored moderate on SWB. Ten interviews from the experimental group were analyzed using an existential-phenomenological approach. Two overarching categories emerged with four themes each: (a) concrete outcomes with themes of physical benefits, escape, quieting the mind, and reflection, and (b) psychospiritual development outcomes with themes of epiphany, connection to self and others, psychological and behavioral change, and coping skills.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis randomized intervention study examined the efficacy and feasibility of a stress reduction program using mindful movement to decrease levels of perceived stress, facilitate coping, enhance self-esteem, and self-regulation in school-age girls. School-age children experience stressors with serious sequelae and need to respond with multiple coping strategies. Girls use maladaptive coping strategies and report lower self-esteem. Evidence-based interventions for stress management in children are scant, contributing to missed opportunities for preventing illness and promoting health. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a training program of awareness-based practices, including yoga, which was adapted to the development of school-age girls. The questions included: (1) To what extent do school-age girls who participate in an eight week mindful movement intervention report significantly different levels of perceived stress, effectiveness and number of coping strategies, levels of self-esteem, and self-regulation than girls in a wait-list control group? (2) To what extent is the dose of mindful movement inversely correlated with perceived stress and positively correlated with effectiveness and number of coping strategies, self-esteem, and self-regulation? A sample of fourth and fifth grade girls was recruited from two public schools randomized as intervention and wait-list control. The intervention group met one hour a week for eight weeks and completed ten minutes of daily homework. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance with an intention to treat analysis (n=155) was used. No differences between groups were found. Both groups reported increased self-esteem and self-regulation over time. Compared to the control group, the intervention group was more likely to increase their frequency of coping (p< .05). The amount of home yoga practice predicted an increase in stress scores. Supplemental analyses found the intervention group was more likely to report increasing stress appraisals (p<.01). Coping frequency and stress appraisal scores were not correlated at Time 1 in the intervention group, but were positively correlated at Time 2. The intervention group may have become more aware of feelings associated with stress and generated coping, or may have experienced increasing stress as part of mindfulness training. School-based mindfulness interventions are feasible and may be coordinated by school nurses, but require more investigation. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed

This is an autobiographical research, which was originated in the search for my inner self at a moment of personal and professional crisis. I perform an academic adventure experiencing new ways of autobiographical construction. My experiences in the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar â a yoga training program, experiential, of self-knowledge, of the potential and spiritualization development â constitute the core-narrative of this research. Living, narrating and reflecting about my attitude towards life are the basis on which rests this self-formation experience, in which the subject and researcher is united in a self-reflexive process. The general objective of this study was experiencing the trainer potential of the autobiographical research as self-formation and self-knowledge. I have sought to interpret and understand the senses/meanings of these experiences in the physical, energy, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, in the realm of my life and building my identity; take awareness of the changes arising in my life and of the resulting design; and yet, discover and understand the Hindu cultural universe implicit in the education/training proposal for adults in the Art of Living. Aiming to contribute in reinventing the multi-shape practices that compose the biographical method, I created an innovative methodology that called autobiographical meditation that consists of a method to access the founding experiences and/or training based on the spiritual practices of the Art of Living (asanas, pranayamas, sudarshan kryia and meditation). After these practices, in a meditative state of calm and tranquility, the flow of thoughts is observed and transcribed to the paper without judgment or rationalization. The final narrative is structured in three central chapters. In the second chapter, I narrate an unforgettable trip to India where I lived a deep experience of inner peace, I plunged into the Hindu culture and Yoga, I experienced moments of pure spirituality and find the essence of the Self: existence, consciousness and happiness. In the following chapter I say how this spiritual adventure was started, my first contact with the stress control program through breathing and the Sudarshan Kriya and how the changes began to take place at all levels of my physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual existence. The fourth chapter is dedicated to understand the expansion of my conscience, the obstacles that have made present and the profound changes that have spread to various areas of my life: personal, social and professional. In the last chapter I discuss about how living and acting in the world according to a spiritual ethics can become a teaching purpose for the Self, by the Self and through the Self. The autobiographical meditation was a way of great self-formation potential. In addition to facilitating the writing, it leads into a dive in the history of life itself, which is seen, felt, under the light of a more pure conscience, under the light of super-consciousness; it is a way of improving meditation. Narrating and reflecting on the experiences consisted of moments to recover the ownership of my own story, the story of my life, of my design as a person and as a professional. The writing process stimulated overcoming personal limits regarding low selfesteem, negativity, difficulties of writing and self-discipline; providing a higher understanding about my formative and personal history, and the emergence of a new identity and integration of the various parties of my Self.

Yoga has been increasingly utilized as a potential intervention to improve cognitive functioning in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. However, evidence-based review is limited. Further, whether the observed yoga-related changes in cognitive function are systematically related to specific neuropsychological domains or specific neuropsychiatric disorders remains underexplored. Thus, the aim of this review is to systematically evaluate randomized controlled trials that objectively measure global cognitive function and/or other neuropsychological domains (e.g., attention, executive functioning, social cognition, etc.) in neuropsychiatric populations. Four broad clusters of neuropsychiatric disorder are discussed: focal neurobehavioral syndromes; major neuropsychiatric disorders; neurological conditions with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral features; and comorbid neuropsychiatric and neurological conditions.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe thesis aims to investigate the effects of two techniques of emotional reglulation, mindfulness meditation and yoga, on stress reactivity, alexithymia, and its relevant variables. Forty-four healthy particiants were ramdomly allocated into 3 groups; mindfulness meditation, yoga and control. The results showed that the 8-weeks of mindfulness meditation (one session/week with an instructor and two sessions as home-practice) significantly improved mindfulness skill and concentration. While, the 8-weeks of yoga significantly ameliorated heart rate variability, (increased HF(n.u.), decreased LF(n.u.) and LF/HF). However, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for stress hormones. Furthermore, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for alexithymia. We add a qualitative analysis to better understand the process behind the changes following theinterventions. It indicated that the mindfulness meditation seemed to be the most effective intervention for alexithymia. Individual differences such as personality, attitudes and confidence on the effectiveness of intervention as well as the level of physical activity should be taken into account in the choice of the most appropriate intervention for a specific profile. Despite the study limitations due to the small subjects number in the different groups, it appears that mindfulness meditation and yoga seem to be an effective intervention for stress management, and mindfulness meditation would be suggested for alexithymia

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis focuses the Yoga since its coming from India to the West, with emphasis on the traditional vision that was incorporated by the great masters. It analyses how Yoga has been received in the postmodern society showing matters of wide circulation newspapers and magazines in Brazil. The introductory chapters prepare the scenery for the main focus of the thesis, which aims to recover a remarkable Yogi and Master, Bohdan Wijtenko. During many years, Master Bohdan has been teaching at many universities abroad and in Brazil and has formed a large number of disciples in our society. Although he did not leave books nor articles in scientific newspapers and magazines, many manuscripts and recorded conferences remain unpublished and the thesis tries to recover them, at least partially, in order to show his work as a great scholar of Hinduism and Yoga, and his constant care in teaching meditation and silence as the essence of this millenary practice. In a special way, it shows his pioneer work to deepen the scientific aspects of Yoga, by going trough the meander of the neurosciences

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe numbers of stress-related diagnoses in society are growing while an increased number of people with stress-related symptoms look for help within primary health care. The primary health care provides different treatments for stress-related problems, amongst others kundalini yoga. Hitherto no qualitative study has been made on how practitioners experience kundalini yoga, practised in a drop-in-class, free of charge within primary health care. The study is based on an convenience sample of 5 participants. The participants defined themselves as women aged 25-85 years having different experiences of depression, angst, anxiety and other stress-related symptoms. The participants' responses were collected by the use of semi-structured interviews and analysed using the Constant Comparative Method. The participants expressed positive physical, mental, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual effects. The kundalini yoga fulfilled several crucial purposes in the lives of the participants and was of great importance for their physical and mental well-being. The sense of finding the right context and practice as well as external circumstances such as the kundalini yoga teacher and the fact that the yoga was free of charge played an important role in how the participants experienced the kundalini yoga. The participants perceived kundalini yoga as effective in reducing stress-related symptoms and in generating positive effects in a variety of areas of life.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this research is to present the design, implementation and evaluation of a yoga program for children in third grade, looking at students with ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and exploring the personal experiences of children with respect to said program. The yoga program is a psychoeducational intervention with an inclusive approach and of a secular nature to be applied within the school curriculum. This program presents an inclusive vision with meditations that are intended to strengthen attention in children, especially in children with ADHD. The intervention, yoga and meditation class is 15 minutes twice a week session for 16 weeks. Participants include 125 third grade students, six of them with ADHD diagnosis, attending an elementary school in Barcelona. We used a participatory evaluation (PE) methodology, using a combination of participant observation, interviews, discussion groups, open-ended questionnaires, to explore the experiences and perceptions of students and teachers. And self-report attention test (CARAS) is administered to children before and after the intervention. Results of this study provide evidence that the 3rd grade students participating have experienced states of relaxation and calm throughout the program and have been able to share their perceptions and experiences during the classes. Some of them conveyed that they were able to transfer those techniques to situations in and outside of the school environment. The results of the CARAS test have also shown a group average increase in attention capacity in the five groups of third grade participants, four of the six of children with ADD-ADHD increase their attention capacity at the end of the program. These findings suggest that implementation of yoga is acceptable and feasible in elementary school setting and has the potential of enhancing attention and promoting well-being in children. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe alchemical hermeneutic methodology utilizes a depth psychological understanding of alchemical operations as an interpretive lens. These processes, viewed from a depth psychological perspective, become the hermeneutical foci through which to interpret select spiritual texts. Following Jung and Romanyshyn, this dissertation further develops an alchemical hermeneutic, and utilizes this textual approach in the interpretation of four texts/traditions in order to create new horizons of meaning, expand the reader’s relationship to text and self at personal and transpersonal levels, as well as broaden, deepen, and define a more psychologically sophisticated approach to certain spiritual texts. This multipaper theoretical dissertation discusses this hermeneutic process and uses the alchemical approach in the interpretation of the following texts and traditions: The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, The Dark Night by John of the Cross, and select passages on the heart from the Upanis&dotbelow;ads and Eastern Christian spirituality.

This is an autobiographical research, which was originated in the search for my inner self at a moment of personal and professional crisis. I perform an academic adventure experiencing new ways of autobiographical construction. My experiences in the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar – a yoga training program, experiential, of self-knowledge, of the potential and spiritualization development – constitute the core-narrative of this research. Aiming to contribute in reinventing the multi-shape practices that compose the biographical method, I created an innovative methodology that called autobiographical meditation that consists of a method to access the founding experiences and/or training based on the spiritual practices of the Art of Living (asanas, pranayamas, sudarshan kryia® and meditation). In the following chapter I say how this spiritual adventure was started, my first contact with the stress control program through breathing and the Sudarshan Kriya® and how the changes began to take place at all levels of my physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual existence.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMan belongs to concentric circles of systems that surround him. As a result of breakage in these circles, the functioning of our social eco-systems is disturbed and our planet is in need of healing and transformation. The inner transformation of each individual is the key to the resolution of global crises. Sahaja Yoga (SY) meditation has brought about profound change in the lives of many individuals and it provides a possible solution for our collective survival and regeneration. SY is a form of Kundalini Yoga realised in a safe communial and spiritual context with focus on integrated community Self-realisation. Self-Realisation is the key to self-knowledge and as an individual becomes more balanced, peaceful and compassionate, society as a whole benefits and improves. Hence, SY meditation fosters and nurtures/ nourishes therapeutic community. The phenomenological approach was used to describe the lived experiences of six Sahaja Yogis in this study. Central themes which expressed the essence of the experiences were determined and discussed through the explicitation process outlined by Hycner (1999). These themes included meditation, collectivity, Kundalini healing, transformation and Self-realisation. This study is valuable because spiritual seeking is a natural urge and profound feelings of connectedness are universal human experiences widely reported across cultures, and, therefore, worthy of rigorous, scientific study. Furthermore, this study is valuable because it has provided empirical, experiential evidence as to the value of SY in building and promoting spiritual community and communal spirituality. The scope of the study emerged from indigenous knowledge that arose from original and phenomenological spiritual exploration of sages over the years.

Meditation is a practice that people can train themselves to dissolve the mind. In the process of transcending the mind, the mood is as free as flying in the spacious sky, and also as quiet as sitting in the moonlight. Besides, art is an outcome that people sustainably think over, examine them, and clarify perception. Thus, art is an activity of exploring and dissolving the mind. Mandala is an art therapy work. I have learned and drew this kind of artwork since I was a child. Through daily Yoga practice and meditation, I conduct a series of exploration of the universe, the nature, and life. After thinking and interpreting how eternal vitality is and how intact cosmic energy are, the inspiration of creation starts to burst in the mind and presents them in the drawing and writing. Life is a continuous learning and creating process. Meditation is not only food for the soul but a practice of having a conversation with oneself. By doing meditation, the subconscious created in the childhood and influenced in the whole life is inspiration for artistic creation. Moreover, during the creation of artwork, I have explored the meaning of life and my work has been examined and revised until the ideas could be expressed completely. The heart of Yoga is gratitude. The interpretation with gratitude, after meditating, can be more completely expressed ideas with words, lines, colors, and the ways of drawing, and practice art therapy. It is because meditation is under the way of exploring life and realizing the eternal vitality. Hence, by doing it, I can reach the aims of surpassing myself and connecting with the universe.
