Abstract: Yoga is one of the six philosophical schools of India and in this text is understood as a path, a life's philosophy supported by ethics, philosophical and technical principles. At recent decades, an increase in the number of practitioners have been observed and also the development of many Yoga teachers' courses. The recent condition of this new profession makes these teachers a group that needs to be studied. In this circumstance, the goal of this research was to investigate these professional's trajectory, as well as the life's implications of this professional path. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research was conducted in which semi-structured interviews were used to investigate the trajectory of twelve yoga's teachers of Campinas city. The interviews were transcribed and the data's analysis was done with the support of an analysis' trajectory model constructed through the systematic literature review. These speeches demonstrated that this professional choice leads to disruptions on several life's aspects. They also suggest that the basis of this career choice is beyond the financial return or professional stability, and stand as a way to satisfy ontological needs. Eastern practices have an increasing presence in Western locations of human services, such as mental health, hospitals, non-profits, prisons, K-12 education, among others. This trend includes the university and pedagogies of first year writing. The application of Eastern contemplative practice helps some people in certain circumstances, but its use raises questions. In the university classroom, methods like mindfulness meditation and yoga may offer perspectives that inform pedagogy. But, these interventions often lack concrete applicability to course content, oversimplify theoretical foundation of the original Eastern practices, and seem disparate from, rather than integral to, standard curriculum. My dissertation analyzes how yogic practice is already embedded in the discipline of composition and rhetoric. By resignifying rhetorical scholarship as yogic, I shape a new and amalgamated conception of agency deploying yogic and Western perspectives. I call this yogic agency. By constructing, defining, and unraveling the function of yogic agency in the writing classroom, I extract, analyze, and refigure the yogic philosophy and practice as always and already underlying scholarship of composition and rhetoric. My dissertation integrates yogic and rhetorical perspectives into one. I aim to sharpen and clarify of the role of yoga, as well as other alternative Eastern frameworks, in the Western writing classroom. There is sometimes an assumption that yoga is a pedagogical intervention replacing less effective teaching methods. This operates on the notion that our field is in a position of deficit. Instead, I generate yogic agency to illustrate the feeling of having control of one’s worldview as a means to embody a way of perceiving that one already has everything within in order to become rhetorical agents of one’s own life. I am not presenting a new way of teaching and learning but rather, a pronounced vision of the discipline as yoga surfaces within its theories.

Annotation:
Often neglected in voice study is the understanding that a singer’s instrument lives in his/her body and therefore cannot be packed away like other musical objects. Yoga and mindfulness compliment the belief of a whole body instrument. Data gathered on college campuses report that stress and anxiety are on the rise, thus reinforcing the need for MBSR and yoga as beneficial and proven tools for stress relief. The current state of research in the realm of mental health in colleges merits the study of a cohesive layout of these exercises and their expected outcomes in singing as well as stress management. Therefore, this document will present yoga sequences that align with the core aspects of singing including breath support, fluid vocal production and artistic expression. Exercises founded on principles of mindfulness are provided to bring awareness of mental qualities within a singer. Mental qualities gained from meditation practice include improved self-esteem, lowered anxiety, and increased focus. Yoga sequences will focus on certain areas of the body commonly addressed in voice studies. Collections of yoga asana, or postures, are featured to allow singers to recognize tightness and inefficiencies in their bodies, thus improving vocal function. This guide will combine yoga traditions along with mindfulness research to introduce ancient philosophies to singers and their teachers, resulting in meaningful and productive voice lessons.

This narrative study of schoolteachers’ experiences of yogic meditation employs the theoretical framework of yoga. It poses the research question: How do teachers story their life experiences following their adoption of a regular meditation practice? Narrative research methods are used to reveal the participants’ own perceptions of their experiences of meditation. The narratives presented include that of an educator and meditation teacher who has been practising yogic meditation for over 40 years, as well as three schoolteachers who more recently came to the practice of meditation and were experienced classroom teachers before and after taking up this practice. The findings reveal that (1) the teachers perceive their meditation practice to have a beneficial impact on their lives, and by extension their work as teachers; (2) the impact their meditation practice has on their classroom teaching may not be obvious to an outside observer. Instead it is experienced by the participants to be an internal enrichment: a transformation of their thought patterns and perceptions of feelings and events; and (3) the longer the participant has been practising meditation, and the more they have immersed themselves in the philosophical study that traditionally accompanies yogic practice, the more complex may be their understandings of their meditation experience. This research also highlights the problems with imposing Western knowledge frameworks on practices that have traditionally been accompanied by an existent theoretical framework. The researcher argues for further study of classical yogic meditation practices in light of their potential benefits for educators, with the caveat that such research should be undertaken by researchers who have experienced authentic immersion in the study of yoga and its classical philosophies.

The purpose of this research was to analyze a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention, the Sanatana Yoga Prison Project (SYPP), at a California state prison. The SYPP had three interventions: pranayama (breathing techniques), asana (physical postures), and dhyana (meditation). The research question was, "What are the outcomes of a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention on prison inmates' spiritual well-being?" This study used a mixed-method approach that included a modified Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), demographic data sheet, and semi-structured interviews that were face-to-face and audio-recorded. There were 31 participants in the control group and 31 participants in the experimental group. Spiritual Wellbeing (SWB) scores were analyzed using the SWBS manual and SPSS 20. The results indicated significant difference between the groups. That is, the experiment group scored high on SWB compared to the control group that scored moderate on SWB. Ten interviews from the experimental group were analyzed using an existential-phenomenological approach. Two overarching categories emerged with four themes each: (a) concrete outcomes with themes of physical benefits, escape, quieting the mind, and reflection, and (b) psychospiritual development outcomes with themes of epiphany, connection to self and others, psychological and behavioral change, and coping skills.

At the root of all living beings is our breath -- without it, we are not alive. Eastern practices such as yoga and meditation are conveyed through the awareness of our breath and the encouragement to be present in what our physical bodies are telling us. This awareness is a huge influence in architectural design. Building well and thinking well are in turn living well, and this architectural thesis served as a journey in discovering how human health can manifest itself in a physical building. The architectural project is an Institute for Being and is located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC. The program of this project consists of spaces to encourage people to seek their own path in spiritual grounding within the otherwise hectic urban context.

This thesis explores the personal and social challenges of teaching yoga in addiction recovery from a social work perspective. It is informed by an action research perspective using interviews and focus groups with yoga teachers and allied health professionals and the personal experiences of the researcher teaching yoga in an addiction recovery centre as well as a literature search on existing yoga and meditation programs used in addiction recovery and corrections. The research explores whether yoga could be applied as a complementary therapy in social work and how yoga assists in addiction recovery. Further it explores what programmatic requirements are needed for a constructive yoga program that addresses the needs of yoga teachers in this field and the participants who are very marginalised. The emerging themes and issues from the data and literature were explored and triangulation was used to draw one conclusion that was found consistently across all research methodologies. This was the importance of Kriya yoga. or the yoga of action, to achieve results with yoga as a complementary therapy. Kriya yoga has three elements: a commitment to regular practice, allowing time to reflect on how this practice is affecting your life and having faith in the yoga process. Undelying this notion of kriya yoga is the importance of the yoga teacher-student relationship and the value of a yoga community that supports the student in their commitment to practice. Recovery from addiction is viewed as a journey involving many stages in which the yoga student deals with relapses. The exemplary yoga programs are forms of karma yoga or the yoga of selfless action. The development of a karma yoga network that forms an on-line bridge between the yoga communities and addiction recovery services is suggested by the research as one way forward in promoting yoga as a complementary therapy in addiction recovery.

This essay describes three Swedish female influencers’ illustration of Hindu and Buddhist concepts, yoga, meditation, mantra and tantra. The questions that are studied and answered are the following: How do influencers illustrate yoga, meditation, mantra and tantra through their blogs? How can the influencers’ descriptions of yoga, meditation, mantra and tantra be an expression of new religious practise? And finally, in our last question we discussed the use of influencers’ blogs in an educational way. The theories we used was a new religious theory, implying that the words are used in a new religious context through the blog, aswell as a gender theory that explains the relation between women and religious movements. To answer our questions we used a discourse analysis on the following words: yoga, meditation, mantra and tantra. The result of our discourse analysis is that the influencers use the words in a new religious context in their blogs. We came to this conclusion because we found a wellbeingdiscourse, a fitness-discourse and a strong consumption-discourse among other things. All of these are key points in new religious movements. The Hindu and Buddhist contcept was more or less non-existent, which confirm our new religious theory. Regarding our gender theory, we saw that the influencers followed the same pattern as our described theory.

This randomized intervention study examined the efficacy and feasibility of a stress reduction program using mindful movement to decrease levels of perceived stress, facilitate coping, enhance self-esteem, and self-regulation in school-age girls. School-age children experience stressors with serious sequelae and need to respond with multiple coping strategies. Girls use maladaptive coping strategies and report lower self-esteem. Evidence-based interventions for stress management in children are scant, contributing to missed opportunities for preventing illness and promoting health. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a training program of awareness-based practices, including yoga, which was adapted to the development of school-age girls. The questions included: (1) To what extent do school-age girls who participate in an eight week mindful movement intervention report significantly different levels of perceived stress, effectiveness and number of coping strategies, levels of self-esteem, and self-regulation than girls in a wait-list control group? (2) To what extent is the dose of mindful movement inversely correlated with perceived stress and positively correlated with effectiveness and number of coping strategies, self-esteem, and self-regulation? A sample of fourth and fifth grade girls was recruited from two public schools randomized as intervention and wait-list control. The intervention group met one hour a week for eight weeks and completed ten minutes of daily homework. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance with an intention to treat analysis (n=155) was used. No differences between groups were found. Both groups reported increased self-esteem and self-regulation over time. Compared to the control group, the intervention group was more likely to increase their frequency of coping (p< .05). The amount of home yoga practice predicted an increase in stress scores. Supplemental analyses found the intervention group was more likely to report increasing stress appraisals (p<.01). Coping frequency and stress appraisal scores were not correlated at Time 1 in the intervention group, but were positively correlated at Time 2. The intervention group may have become more aware of feelings associated with stress and generated coping, or may have experienced increasing stress as part of mindfulness training. School-based mindfulness interventions are feasible and may be coordinated by school nurses, but require more investigation. Limitations, implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed

Women’s mortality rate in the United States has increased in almost every age group in the past several years. However, more women in the United States are choosing yoga as a complementary health approach to improve general well-being. Thus, research on yoga and other factors that affect women’s health in the United States may inform public health initiatives to address the health disparities in women’s mortality rates. Grounded in the health belief model, the purpose of this study was to explore whether the factors of practicing the components of yoga, doctor’s recommendation for increased physical activity, body mass index (BMI) categories, hypertension, high cholesterol, age, and occupation predicted the self-rated health of women. This cross-sectional, secondary analysis of the 2017 National Health Interview Survey included 14,464 female respondents, and ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to examine the data. The results showed that self-reported participation in yoga, breathing as a part of yoga, and meditation as a part of yoga was associated with higher self-rated health. Additionally, participants with healthy weight BMI, teachers, and participants who did not receive recommendations for increased physical activity and did not have hypertension or high cholesterol were more likely to report better self-rated health. Based on the results of this study, public health researchers may continue to explore the effects of yoga on women and how a yoga-based population health intervention could help women in the United States live longer and healthier lives.

This is an autobiographical research, which was originated in the search for my inner self at a moment of personal and professional crisis. I perform an academic adventure experiencing new ways of autobiographical construction. My experiences in the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar â a yoga training program, experiential, of self-knowledge, of the potential and spiritualization development â constitute the core-narrative of this research. Living, narrating and reflecting about my attitude towards life are the basis on which rests this self-formation experience, in which the subject and researcher is united in a self-reflexive process. The general objective of this study was experiencing the trainer potential of the autobiographical research as self-formation and self-knowledge. I have sought to interpret and understand the senses/meanings of these experiences in the physical, energy, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, in the realm of my life and building my identity; take awareness of the changes arising in my life and of the resulting design; and yet, discover and understand the Hindu cultural universe implicit in the education/training proposal for adults in the Art of Living. Aiming to contribute in reinventing the multi-shape practices that compose the biographical method, I created an innovative methodology that called autobiographical meditation that consists of a method to access the founding experiences and/or training based on the spiritual practices of the Art of Living (asanas, pranayamas, sudarshan kryia and meditation). After these practices, in a meditative state of calm and tranquility, the flow of thoughts is observed and transcribed to the paper without judgment or rationalization. The final narrative is structured in three central chapters. In the second chapter, I narrate an unforgettable trip to India where I lived a deep experience of inner peace, I plunged into the Hindu culture and Yoga, I experienced moments of pure spirituality and find the essence of the Self: existence, consciousness and happiness. In the following chapter I say how this spiritual adventure was started, my first contact with the stress control program through breathing and the Sudarshan Kriya and how the changes began to take place at all levels of my physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual existence. The fourth chapter is dedicated to understand the expansion of my conscience, the obstacles that have made present and the profound changes that have spread to various areas of my life: personal, social and professional. In the last chapter I discuss about how living and acting in the world according to a spiritual ethics can become a teaching purpose for the Self, by the Self and through the Self. The autobiographical meditation was a way of great self-formation potential. In addition to facilitating the writing, it leads into a dive in the history of life itself, which is seen, felt, under the light of a more pure conscience, under the light of super-consciousness; it is a way of improving meditation. Narrating and reflecting on the experiences consisted of moments to recover the ownership of my own story, the story of my life, of my design as a person and as a professional. The writing process stimulated overcoming personal limits regarding low selfesteem, negativity, difficulties of writing and self-discipline; providing a higher understanding about my formative and personal history, and the emergence of a new identity and integration of the various parties of my Self.

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the dynamic transformations of the bodyself- society relationship as storied by 'Western' practitioners in Modem Yoga and Meditation. The study drew upon three philosophical approaches that belong to the interpretive paradigm: the social phenomenological, the hermeneutical and the social constructionist approaches. The use of life history and ethnographic research strategies allowed for the performance of a combination of purposive, opportunistic, snowball and discrepant case sampling that led to conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten long-term (studying and practising regularly for more than two years) Yoga and Meditation practitioners/teachers. The practi~es included a variety of traditions like Vipassana Meditation, Zen, Neo-Advaita, Asthanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga and others. The study used categorical-content and categorical-form analyses to 'bracket' the whats and the hows of the informants' stories respectively. The findings are represented through . . predominantly modified realist tales, which are accompanied by confessional tales and a five-part creative fiction. The fmdings highlight important issues regarding the participants' beginnings with their practices, which are marked by a desire for some form of transformation that broadly alluded to an increased sense of self-reflexivity and resisting feelings of anomie. Also, they illustrate Modem Meditation and Yoga practices as invented traditions, and thus a complex and dynamic socio-cultural fusion of Asian and Western philosophies and pedagogies that transforms in historical time. Furthermore, long-term engagement with Yoga and Meditation practice is suggestive to involve cultivation of an ethical lifestyle and a somaesthetic, kinaesthetic inner bodymind (high degree ofbodymind unity). This set of somatic pedagogies potentially transforms the practitioners' existential feelings, thus moving their body-selves from a restrictive emotional habitus to it more productive one and altering their sense of self, time, space and relationality (body-selfother). The findings also highlighted how the informants tap into an AsianlWestern fusion of embodied metaphorical narrative resourses, and how they (re)create these narratives in the process of constructing narrative coherence. Finally, the implications of this study's findings suggest that al} the above mundializations in the phenomenal, subjective, social and narrative worlds of the informants culminate in three key mundializations of their socialities (spiritual hierarchies, charisma and achievement) and two key mundializations of their body-selves (disciplined liberal body-selves and samadhic body-selves).

Yoga has been increasingly utilized as a potential intervention to improve cognitive functioning in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. However, evidence-based review is limited. Further, whether the observed yoga-related changes in cognitive function are systematically related to specific neuropsychological domains or specific neuropsychiatric disorders remains underexplored. Thus, the aim of this review is to systematically evaluate randomized controlled trials that objectively measure global cognitive function and/or other neuropsychological domains (e.g., attention, executive functioning, social cognition, etc.) in neuropsychiatric populations. Four broad clusters of neuropsychiatric disorder are discussed: focal neurobehavioral syndromes; major neuropsychiatric disorders; neurological conditions with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral features; and comorbid neuropsychiatric and neurological conditions.

The thesis aims to investigate the effects of two techniques of emotional reglulation, mindfulness meditation and yoga, on stress reactivity, alexithymia, and its relevant variables. Forty-four healthy particiants were ramdomly allocated into 3 groups; mindfulness meditation, yoga and control. The results showed that the 8-weeks of mindfulness meditation (one session/week with an instructor and two sessions as home-practice) significantly improved mindfulness skill and concentration. While, the 8-weeks of yoga significantly ameliorated heart rate variability, (increased HF(n.u.), decreased LF(n.u.) and LF/HF). However, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for stress hormones. Furthermore, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for alexithymia. We add a qualitative analysis to better understand the process behind the changes following theinterventions. It indicated that the mindfulness meditation seemed to be the most effective intervention for alexithymia. Individual differences such as personality, attitudes and confidence on the effectiveness of intervention as well as the level of physical activity should be taken into account in the choice of the most appropriate intervention for a specific profile. Despite the study limitations due to the small subjects number in the different groups, it appears that mindfulness meditation and yoga seem to be an effective intervention for stress management, and mindfulness meditation would be suggested for alexithymia

This thesis focuses the Yoga since its coming from India to the West, with emphasis on the traditional vision that was incorporated by the great masters. It analyses how Yoga has been received in the postmodern society showing matters of wide circulation newspapers and magazines in Brazil. The introductory chapters prepare the scenery for the main focus of the thesis, which aims to recover a remarkable Yogi and Master, Bohdan Wijtenko. During many years, Master Bohdan has been teaching at many universities abroad and in Brazil and has formed a large number of disciples in our society. Although he did not leave books nor articles in scientific newspapers and magazines, many manuscripts and recorded conferences remain unpublished and the thesis tries to recover them, at least partially, in order to show his work as a great scholar of Hinduism and Yoga, and his constant care in teaching meditation and silence as the essence of this millenary practice. In a special way, it shows his pioneer work to deepen the scientific aspects of Yoga, by going trough the meander of the neurosciences

The assignment is an architecture and urban planning study of a sports and recreation center. The solved area is located in the town of Vsetín, in the part called Ohrada. Nowdays, the area is obsolete, unfunctional and also unmodern. My project is mainly focused to create a concept that responds to the environment, offers outdoor and indoor spaces for all generations. It allows better connection with nature, variable use, and division of area by function. The design is defined by the river Bečva on the west side and a busy 1st class road on the east side. It was important to separate pedestrians and cyclists from motor vehicles. The response to this restriction is to direct traffic in the area to the west, towards the river. This creates a terrain works that optically deflects the design in a quieter direction. Buildings are placed in the line and oriented in the western direction. After creating the terrain, I divided the area into several segments according to functionality. In the heart of the area, a multifunctional central hall with an inner climbing wall is set in the terrain. In front of it is a public space for meetings, sports and recreation. On the other side, there is a basketball court, a workout playground, a children's playground in front of the hall and a rest area of ??greenery closer to the river. If we continue southerly down, another cube set into the terrain is a building with a restaurant and a cafe. The southernmost building is a tennis club with facilities for athletes and squash. In front of the building there is a 9x tennis court with a grandstand. Closer to the river and the bike path there is an outdoor climbing wall. From the newly created embankment, the area is divided by a cycle path around the river. Behind the bridge is a green belt separated area which, unlike the previous ones, is tuned in a calmer spirit. We will find a building of a yoga and meditation center.

The numbers of stress-related diagnoses in society are growing while an increased number of people with stress-related symptoms look for help within primary health care. The primary health care provides different treatments for stress-related problems, amongst others kundalini yoga. Hitherto no qualitative study has been made on how practitioners experience kundalini yoga, practised in a drop-in-class, free of charge within primary health care. The study is based on an convenience sample of 5 participants. The participants defined themselves as women aged 25-85 years having different experiences of depression, angst, anxiety and other stress-related symptoms. The participants' responses were collected by the use of semi-structured interviews and analysed using the Constant Comparative Method. The participants expressed positive physical, mental, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual effects. The kundalini yoga fulfilled several crucial purposes in the lives of the participants and was of great importance for their physical and mental well-being. The sense of finding the right context and practice as well as external circumstances such as the kundalini yoga teacher and the fact that the yoga was free of charge played an important role in how the participants experienced the kundalini yoga. The participants perceived kundalini yoga as effective in reducing stress-related symptoms and in generating positive effects in a variety of areas of life.

Disordered eating, including bingeing, dieting, purging, and clinical and subclinical forms of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, is prevalent among college-aged women. To date, few interventions have successfully reduced risk factors related to disordered eating. One promising intervention utilizes principles of cognitive dissonance to reduce thin-ideal internalization among women at risk for eating disorders. Additionally, the benefits of yoga, including increased awareness of bodily processes, offer hope that this practice might reduce disordered eating symptomatology. The current study compared cognitive dissonance and yoga interventions for disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that there were no significant differences between the yoga and control groups. However, participants in the dissonance group had significantly lower scores than both other groups on measures of disordered eating symptoms as well as thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, alexithymia, and anxiety. These findings have important implications for potential interventions on college campuses.

Annotation:
Unknown to most Western psychologists, ancient Indian scriptures contain very rich, empirically derived psychological theories that are, however, intertwined with religious and philosophical content. This article represents our attempt to extract the psychological theory of cognition and consciousness from a prominent ancient Indian thought system: Samkhya-Yoga. We derive rather broad hypotheses from this approach that may complement and extend Western mainstream theorizing. These hypotheses address an ancient personality theory, the effects of practicing the applied part of Samkhya-Yoga on normal and extraordinary cognition, as well as different ways of perceiving reality. We summarize empirical evidence collected (mostly without reference to the Indian thought system) in diverse fields of research that allows for making judgments about the hypotheses, and suggest more specific hypotheses to be examined in future research. We conclude that the existing evidence for the (broad) hypotheses is substantial but that there are still considerable gaps in theory and research to be filled. Theories of cognition contained in the ancient Indian systems have the potential to modify and complement existing Western mainstream accounts of cognition. In particular, they might serve as a basis for arriving at more comprehensive theories for several research areas that, so far, lack strong theoretical grounding, such as meditation research or research on aspects of consciousness.

Portes, Barroso Claudia Cristina.

The purpose of this research is to present the design, implementation and evaluation of a yoga program for children in third grade, looking at students with ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and exploring the personal experiences of children with respect to said program. The yoga program is a psychoeducational intervention with an inclusive approach and of a secular nature to be applied within the school curriculum. This program presents an inclusive vision with meditations that are intended to strengthen attention in children, especially in children with ADHD. The intervention, yoga and meditation class is 15 minutes twice a week session for 16 weeks. Participants include 125 third grade students, six of them with ADHD diagnosis, attending an elementary school in Barcelona. We used a participatory evaluation (PE) methodology, using a combination of participant observation, interviews, discussion groups, open-ended questionnaires, to explore the experiences and perceptions of students and teachers. And self-report attention test (CARAS) is administered to children before and after the intervention. Results of this study provide evidence that the 3rd grade students participating have experienced states of relaxation and calm throughout the program and have been able to share their perceptions and experiences during the classes. Some of them conveyed that they were able to transfer those techniques to situations in and outside of the school environment. The results of the CARAS test have also shown a group average increase in attention capacity in the five groups of third grade participants, four of the six of children with ADD-ADHD increase their attention capacity at the end of the program. These findings suggest that implementation of yoga is acceptable and feasible in elementary school setting and has the potential of enhancing attention and promoting well-being in children. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

The alchemical hermeneutic methodology utilizes a depth psychological understanding of alchemical operations as an interpretive lens. These processes, viewed from a depth psychological perspective, become the hermeneutical foci through which to interpret select spiritual texts. Following Jung and Romanyshyn, this dissertation further develops an alchemical hermeneutic, and utilizes this textual approach in the interpretation of four texts/traditions in order to create new horizons of meaning, expand the reader’s relationship to text and self at personal and transpersonal levels, as well as broaden, deepen, and define a more psychologically sophisticated approach to certain spiritual texts. This multipaper theoretical dissertation discusses this hermeneutic process and uses the alchemical approach in the interpretation of the following texts and traditions: The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, The Dark Night by John of the Cross, and select passages on the heart from the Upanis&dotbelow;ads and Eastern Christian spirituality.

â Reflectionâ is an experiment with what I call â symbolic architectureâ i.e. design where the features of the building have a profound meaning or a strong recall to some familiar aspect in our lives. It is a meditation center designed to rejuvenate visitors by providing an ideal environment to practice and teach meditation. The design is inspired by concepts of Hindu philosophy and each element of the building, the light, the materials, the water and the structure is likened to an element of the spiritual being that helps a meditator achieve a connection between the body and the soul.

This dissertation is devoted to study of complex systems in human physiology particularly heartbeats and brain dynamics. We have studied the dynamics of heartbeats that has been a subject of investigation of two independent groups. The first group emphasized the multifractal nature of the heartbeat dynamics of healthy subjects, whereas the second group had established a close connection between healthy subjects and the occurrence of crucial events. We have analyzed the same set of data and established that in fact the heartbeats are characterized by the occurrence of crucial and Poisson events. An increase in the percentage of crucial events makes the multifractal spectrum broader, thereby bridging the results of the former group with the results of the latter group. The crucial events are characterized by a power index that signals the occurrence of 1/f noise for complex systems in the best physiological condition. These results led us to focus our analysis on the statistical properties of crucial events. We have adopted the same statistical analysis to study the statistical properties of the heartbeat dynamics of subjects practicing meditation. The heartbeats of people doing meditation are known to produce coherent fluctuations. In addition to this effect, we made the surprising discovery that meditation makes the heartbeat depart from the ideal condition of 1/f noise. We also discussed how to combine the wave-like nature of the dynamics of the brain with the existence of crucial events that are responsible for the 1/f noise. We showed that the anomalous scaling generated by the crucial events could be established by means of a direct analysis of raw data. The efficiency of the direct analysis procedure is made possible by the fact that periodicity and crucial events is the product of a spontaneous process of self-organization. We argue that the results of this study can be used to shed light into the nature of this process of self-organization.

This thesis analyses discourses on health and wellbeing in three Swedish lifestyle magazines for women, Amelia, Tara and M-magasin, and how readers of these magazines reflect on and negotiate the values and identities presented in them. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to increased knowledge about mediatized religion, directed to women by commercial women's magazines on a secular market, and how this religion is presented, perceived and used as a resource for women's wellbeing, lifestyle and identity. The study is a qualitative case study combining a content analysis of what is referred to as the wellbeing discourses of the three magazines, and a reception study. This design was selected to combine a media centred and a consumer oriented perspective. Inspired by Nancy T. Ammerman, the magazines’ and the readers’ discursive understanding of religion and spirituality was approached through the concept of everyday religion. The magazines and the readers associated religion with institutional religion and a collective experience. Spirituality was related to non-institutional religion and individually chosen meaning-making elements from both non-institutional and institutional religion. This individualistic spirituality was, thus, still connected to institutional religion. This religion can, on an individual as well as structural level, be connected to a global holistic consumption spirituality and a standardization and homogenization of contemporary religion where practises like yoga and meditation occupied a prominent position. The understanding of religion and spirituality presented through the magazines’ wellbeing discourses, can be seen as “glossy-feminism”, a feminism that grows out of a neo-liberal self-help paradigm, and a feminisation of wellbeing in contemporary western society. Wellbeing is depicted as a female concern that legitimates the reader's attention to her own body as the primary tool to achieve control over her own life and social relationships, and for gender equality in society. This strategy is connected to female caring practice in traditional gender positions. The thesis draws on theories of deregulation of religion, the mediatization and individualisation of religion, and contributes to a deeper understanding of how these shape contemporary religious change. Through focusing the understudied area of commercial women's magazines, it contributes with new knowledge to the field of research on media as a primary source of peoples’ encounter with religion.

Annotation:
Background: Given the incomplete benefits of the pharmacological therapy for ADHD and its over-prescription in children over the last decades, there is an explicit need for alternative treatments. Mindfulness-based Interventions (MBIs) are a family of emergent self-regulation practices including meditation, yoga and body-awareness exercises, found to be an effective therapy for ADHD. Due to poor methodological design and significant risk of bias across studies, mindfulness approach remains an investigational treatment. Aim: This systematic review sought to identify and critically appraise the evidence on the functioning outcomes of MBIs in children and youth with ADHD. Method: The literature search was conducted in 7 databases for psychology and social sciences to identify controlled trials – randomized- and non-randomized, evaluating MBIs published in peer-reviewed journal in English between 2000-2019. Only studies focusing on children and youth aged 7-18 years with documented ADHD symptoms were considered for inclusion. Results: Six controlled trials were included and analysed. Meditation, breathing techniques, self-awareness and yoga exercises were the most common activities implemented across the 6 studies. Significant reduction of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms; and improvements of sustained attention, working memory and emotional regulation were reported across studies, with small to large effect size. Conclusion: Despite the limitations, MBIs do prove to be an effective complementary treatment for reduction of the core ADHD symptoms and improvement of executive functioning (EF). Further research is needed to elucidate how these interventions improve social functioning and participation of children and youth with ADHD, which would enable a wider implementation of these practices at the community level.

This is an autobiographical research, which was originated in the search for my inner self at a moment of personal and professional crisis. I perform an academic adventure experiencing new ways of autobiographical construction. My experiences in the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar – a yoga training program, experiential, of self-knowledge, of the potential and spiritualization development – constitute the core-narrative of this research. Aiming to contribute in reinventing the multi-shape practices that compose the biographical method, I created an innovative methodology that called autobiographical meditation that consists of a method to access the founding experiences and/or training based on the spiritual practices of the Art of Living (asanas, pranayamas, sudarshan kryia® and meditation). In the following chapter I say how this spiritual adventure was started, my first contact with the stress control program through breathing and the Sudarshan Kriya® and how the changes began to take place at all levels of my physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual existence.

The desire to enhance and make ourselves better is not a new one and it has continued to intrigue throughout the ages. Individuals have continued to seek ways to improve and enhance their well-being for example through nutrition, physical exercise, education and so on. Crucial to this improvement of their well-being is improving their ability to remember. Hence, people interested in improving their well-being, are often interested in memory as well. The rationale being that memory is crucial to our well-being. The desire to improve one’s memory then is almost certainly as old as the desire to improve one’s well-being. Traditionally, people have used different means in an attempt to enhance their memories: for example in learning through storytelling, studying, and apprenticeship. In remembering through practices like mnemonics, repetition, singing, and drumming. In retaining, storing and consolidating memories through nutrition and stimulants like coffee to help keep awake; and by external aids like notepads and computers. In forgetting through rituals and rites. Recent scientific advances in biotechnology, nanotechnology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and information technologies, present a wide variety of technologies to enhance many different aspects of human functioning. Thus, some commentators have identified human enhancement as central and one of the most fascinating subject in bioethics in the last two decades. Within, this period, most of the commentators have addressed the Ethical, Social, Legal and Policy (ESLP) issues in human enhancements as a whole as opposed to specific enhancements. However, this is problematic and recently various commentators have found this to be deficient and called for a contextualized case-by-case analysis to human enhancements for example genetic enhancement, moral enhancement, and in my case memory enhancement (ME). The rationale being that the reasons for accepting/rejecting a particular enhancement vary depending on the enhancement itself. Given this enormous variation, moral and legal generalizations about all enhancement processes and technologies are unwise and they should instead be evaluated individually. Taking this as a point of departure, this research will focus specifically on making a case for ME and in doing so assessing the ESLP implications arising from ME. My analysis will draw on the already existing literature for and against enhancement, especially in part two of this thesis; but it will be novel in providing a much more in-depth analysis of ME. From this perspective, I will contribute to the ME debate through two reviews that address the question how we enhance the memory, and through four original papers discussed in part three of this thesis, where I examine and evaluate critically specific ESLP issues that arise with the use of ME. In the conclusion, I will amalgamate all my contribution to the ME debate and suggest the future direction for the ME debate.

Man belongs to concentric circles of systems that surround him. As a result of breakage in these circles, the functioning of our social eco-systems is disturbed and our planet is in need of healing and transformation. The inner transformation of each individual is the key to the resolution of global crises. Sahaja Yoga (SY) meditation has brought about profound change in the lives of many individuals and it provides a possible solution for our collective survival and regeneration. SY is a form of Kundalini Yoga realised in a safe communial and spiritual context with focus on integrated community Self-realisation. Self-Realisation is the key to self-knowledge and as an individual becomes more balanced, peaceful and compassionate, society as a whole benefits and improves. Hence, SY meditation fosters and nurtures/ nourishes therapeutic community. The phenomenological approach was used to describe the lived experiences of six Sahaja Yogis in this study. Central themes which expressed the essence of the experiences were determined and discussed through the explicitation process outlined by Hycner (1999). These themes included meditation, collectivity, Kundalini healing, transformation and Self-realisation. This study is valuable because spiritual seeking is a natural urge and profound feelings of connectedness are universal human experiences widely reported across cultures, and, therefore, worthy of rigorous, scientific study. Furthermore, this study is valuable because it has provided empirical, experiential evidence as to the value of SY in building and promoting spiritual community and communal spirituality. The scope of the study emerged from indigenous knowledge that arose from original and phenomenological spiritual exploration of sages over the years.

Meditation is a practice that people can train themselves to dissolve the mind. In the process of transcending the mind, the mood is as free as flying in the spacious sky, and also as quiet as sitting in the moonlight. Besides, art is an outcome that people sustainably think over, examine them, and clarify perception. Thus, art is an activity of exploring and dissolving the mind. Mandala is an art therapy work. I have learned and drew this kind of artwork since I was a child. Through daily Yoga practice and meditation, I conduct a series of exploration of the universe, the nature, and life. After thinking and interpreting how eternal vitality is and how intact cosmic energy are, the inspiration of creation starts to burst in the mind and presents them in the drawing and writing. Life is a continuous learning and creating process. Meditation is not only food for the soul but a practice of having a conversation with oneself. By doing meditation, the subconscious created in the childhood and influenced in the whole life is inspiration for artistic creation. Moreover, during the creation of artwork, I have explored the meaning of life and my work has been examined and revised until the ideas could be expressed completely. The heart of Yoga is gratitude. The interpretation with gratitude, after meditating, can be more completely expressed ideas with words, lines, colors, and the ways of drawing, and practice art therapy. It is because meditation is under the way of exploring life and realizing the eternal vitality. Hence, by doing it, I can reach the aims of surpassing myself and connecting with the universe.
