A review is given of the principles underlying X-ray magnetic circular (XMCD) and linear (XMLD) dichroism spectromicroscopies consisting of polarized X-ray absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with scanning or imaging microscopy. The techniques are shown to have many useful and important capabilities for the study of complex magnetic materials. They offer elemental specificity, chemical specificity and variable depth sensitivity, among others. XMCD microscopy is best suited for the study of ferromagnets and ferrimagnets, and it allows a quantitative determination of the size and direction of spin and orbital moments. XMLD microscopy promises to become a powerful tool for the study of antiferromagnets which are difficult to study by conventional microscopy techniques.

Abstract We present the first theoretical and experimental evidence of time-resolved dynamic x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) measurements of GHz magnetic precessions driven by ferromagnetic resonance in both metallic and insulating thin films. Our findings show a dynamic XMLD in both ferromagnetic Ni80Fe20 and ferrimagnetic Ni0.65Zn0.35Al0.8Fe1.2O4 for different measurement geometries and linear polarizations. A detailed analysis of the observed signals reveals the importance of separating different harmonic components in the dynamic signal in order to identify the XMLD response without the influence of competing contributions. In particular, RF magnetic resonance elicits a large dynamic XMLD response at the fundamental frequency under experimental geometries with oblique x-ray polarization. The geometric range and experimental sensitivity can be improved by isolating the 2ω Fourier component of the dynamic response. These results illustrate the potential of dynamic XMLD and represent a milestone accomplishment toward the study of GHz spin dynamics in systems beyond ferromagnetic order.

Abstract A synchrotron radiation beamline in the soft- and tender-X ray energy range of 180-3000 eV with versatile polarization control has been designed for NanoTerasu, the 3-GeV next-generation synchrotron radiation facility at Tohoku, Japan. A series of four APPLE-II type undulators is adopted as a photon source to realize the required beam properties with high-speed polarization switching. The beamline optics is designed for a highly efficient and precise use of x-ray magnetic circular/linear dichroism (XMCD/XMLD) technique balancing high photon flux and energy resolution. The simulated performance of the segmented undulator together with the monochromator optics achieved the sufficiently high flux and energy resolution (E/ΔE) in whole target energy range. Two endstations with the different re-focus optics, one for marginal spot size with high flux and the other for ultimate focus down to ∼10 nm are also designed. The simulated performance of the beamline encourages the future researches of high-throughput and nm-focused spintronic measurements.

We demonstrate a probe of long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order in FeRh thin films using non-resonant magnetic x-ray scattering. In particular, x-rays at energies below the Fe K-edge have been used for the observation of magnetic Bragg peaks. Due to the low efficiency of the magnetic scattering, a grazing incidence geometry was used to optimise the diffracted intensity from the thin film samples. Based on Scherrer analysis, we estimate a coherence length similar to previous reports from x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) experiments, indicating that domain sizes are limited to 40 nm which is consistent with the grain size. The temperature dependent behaviour of the AF order shows an inverse correlation with the emergence of the ferromagnetic (FM) moment, as expected from the phase diagram.

There are many ways to use open source code to implement digital standards for scholarly journal publishing. However, providing digital services using open-source code can be a challenge, especially for small and local academic society journals. This paper provides some critical examples of using some of the many open-source code resources available to the public. Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) Extensible Markup Language (XML) has been established as an essential tool, and is now used by most journals for digital publication. JATS XML can be converted to other viewer formats, including Extensible Hypertext Markup Language, PubReader, and EPUB 3.0. It can also be used to create dynamic interactive PDFs. It can be converted to other XMLs, incluing Crossref XML, PubMed XML, and DOAJ XML. Open-source code published on GitHub, National Information Standards Organization, and the US National Library of Medicine can be used for Crossref XML deposition for digital object identifier and Crossmark stamp registration. These examples of open-source code need to be implemented on journal websites to provide local academic journal publishers with various critical functions. This paper provides instructions on the best ways to realize these digital standards so that journal content can be provided to readers in a more friendly and effective way.

Multiple interdependent issues negotiations have been widely studied since most real-world negotiation involves multiple interdependent issues. Our work focuses on negotiation with multiple interdependent issues in which agent utility functions are nonlinear. In the field of multiple issue negotiations, there are no established common testbeds for evaluating protocols. In this paper, we propose a common testbed creating tool based on XML that mainly covers the utility functions based on cube-constraints and cone-constraints. First, we propose a testbed generating tool that inputs configuration data and outputs XML formatted files that represent agent utility spaces. The current tool can produce four types of utility spaces: Random, A Single Hill, Two-Hills, and SeveralHills. These types are observed in real negotiation settings. Also we define the agent’s utility space information based on XML formats. By defining the testbed data as XMLs, users can easily read the files and change the data structure.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate web services (in the form of parameterised URLs), specifically in the context of the ScotlandsPlaces project. This involves cross‐domain querying, data retrieval and display via the development of a bespoke XML standard rather than existing XML formats and mapping between them.Design/methodology/approachIn looking at the different heritage domain datasets as well as the metadata formats used for storage and data exchange, the ScotlandsPlaces XML format is revealed as the most appropriate for this type of project. The nature of the project itself and the need for dynamic web services are in turn explored.FindingsIt was found that, due to the nature of the project, the combination of a bespoke ScotlandsPlaces XML format and a set of matching web services was the best choice in terms of the retrieval of different domain datasets, as well as the desired extensible nature of the project.Research limitations/implicationsIt may have proven useful to investigate the datasets of more ScotlandsPlaces partners, but as yet only a limited number of first phase partners' datasets could be studied, as the second phase of the project has yet to begin.Originality/valueRather than an information portal, the ScotlandsPlaces web site aggregates disparate types of record, whether site records, archival or otherwise, into a single web site and makes these records discoverable via geographical searching. Aggregated data are accessed through web service queries (using a bespoke XML format developed specifically for the project for data return) and allow partner organisations to add their datasets regardless of the organisational domain. The service also allows spatially referenced records to be plotted on to a geo‐browser via a KML file, which in turn lets users evaluate the results based on geographical location.

This paper reports on two new technical developments concerning sample environments for X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The first measurements under high pressures of up to 30 GPa are described. The difficulties of combining the techniques of high pressure and XMCD are commented on. The second development involves the use of a fast-switching magnetic field. A new superconducting device is used to perform XMCD measurements on paramagnetic compounds in magnetic fields of up to 6 T. The small amplitude of the XMCD signal imposes, for a given signal-to-noise ratio, a noise less than a few 10−5. The signal-to-noise ratio is improved by the use of a series of acquisitions, switching the magnetic field between each acquisition. A very fast switching mechanism has been built based on mechanical rotation of a superconducting coil, with the sample kept in place inside the coil. The XMCD signals at the L II,III-edges of paramagnetic rare-earth compounds have been measured at 4.5 K in fields of up to 6 T with a switching time of 11 s.

AbstractSynthesis of Ni and Zn substituted nano-greigite, Fe3S4, is achieved from single source diethyldithiocarbamato precursor compounds, producing particles typically 50–100 nm in diameter with plate-like pseudohexagonal morphologies. Up to 12 wt.% Ni is incorporated into the greigite structure, and there is evidence that Zn is also incorporated but Co is not substituted into the lattice. The FeL3X-ray absorption spectra for these materials have a narrow single peak at 707.7 eV and the resulting main X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has the same sign at 708.75 eV. All XMCD spectra also have a broad positive feature at 711 eV, a characteristic of covalent mixing. The greigite XMCD spectra contrast with the three clearly defined XMCD site specific peaks found in the ferrite spinel, magnetite. The FeL2,3X-ray absorption spectra and XMCD spectra of the greigite reflect and reveal the high conductivity of greigite and the very strong covalency of the Fe–S bonding. The electron hopping between Fe3+and Fe2+on octahedral sites results in an intermediate oxidation state of the Fe in the Ohsite of Fe2.5+producing an effective formula of [Fe3+↑]A-site[2Fe2.5+↓]B-siteS42–]. The NiL2,3X-ray absorption spectra and XMCD reveal substitution on the Ohsite with a strongly covalent character and an oxidation state <Ni1.5+in a representative formula [Fe3+↑]A[[(2 – x)Fe2.5+↓][Nix1.5+]]BS42–.

Real-world information including subjective opinions and judgments need imprecise data to be modeled for representation and querying in databases. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become a de-facto standard for data modeling and exchange in recent years. Efforts on modeling imprecision and representing such data in XML have not been fully developed. In this paper, an XML based fuzzy data representation and querying system is presented. Complex and imprecise data are represented using a fuzzy extension of XML. The representation forms the basis for a system which enables fuzzy querying on XML documents using XQuery, a XML query language. The system also enables restructuring of XML Schemas through merging of elements of the XML documents. By using this feature of the system, application specific XML Schema and XML documents can be generated from the existing documents.

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have been widely used for applications such as X-ray crystallography and magnetic spin probes because of their unprecedented performance. Recently, time-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) with ultrafast XFEL pulses have made it possible to achieve an instantaneous view of atomic de-excitation. However, owing to the narrow bandwidth and coherence of XFELs, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and XMCD are time- and effort-consuming for both machine scientists and users of XFELs. In this work, an efficient scheme using a broadband XFEL pulse and single-shot X-ray spectrometer is proposed, in which the XAS and XMCD measurements can be accomplished with the same machine conditions. An evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm is used to maximize the XFEL bandwidth offered by the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL user facility without additional hardware. A numerical example using MnO is demonstrated, showing that, by using approximately 1000 consecutive XFEL shots with a central photon energy of 650 eV and full bandwidth of 4.4%, precise spectral measurements for XAS and XMCD can be achieved. Additional considerations related to single-shot XAS and XMCD are discussed.

In order to disentangle the physical effects at the origin of transition metal K-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in coordination polymers and quantify small structural distortions from the intensity of these signals, a systematic investigation of Prussian blue analogs as model compounds is being conducted. Here the effects of the temperature and of the external magnetic field are tackled; none of these external parameters modify the shape of the XMCD signal but they both critically modify its intensity. The optimized experimental conditions, as well as a reliable and robust normalization procedure, could thus be determined for the study of the intrinsic parameters. Through an extended discussion on measurements on other XMCD-dedicated beamlines and for other coordination compounds, we finally provide new transition metal K-edge XMCD users with useful information to initiate and successfully carry out their projects.

We explored the subtree matching problem of probabilistic XML documents: finding the matches of an XML query tree over a probabilistic XML document, using the canonical tree edit distance as a similarity measure between subtrees. Probabilistic XML is a probability distribution model capturing uncertainty of both value and structure. Query over probabilistic XML documents is difficult: an naivie algorithm has exponential complexity by directly compute the tree edit distance between the query tree and each certain XML tree represented by the probabilistic XML document. Based on the method of tree edit distance computation over certain XML subtrees, we defined a minimum-solution to the edit distance computation, which means the minimum cost to translate the query tree to the probabilistic XML tree. Furthermore, we developed an algorithm---ASM (Algorithm of Subtree Matching) to compute the minimum solution. Finally, we proved the complexity of ASM is linear in the size of the probabilistic XML document.

The aim of the research was to reveal the adaptive features of the original collection material of radish Raphanus sativus L. in terms of "total root yield" and "vitamin C content". Methods. Field, biometric, statistical. The following indicators were used to assess the parameters of adaptive capacity and ecological plasticity: general and specific adaptive capacity of the genotype (GACi and SACi); relative stability (Sgi); coefficient of ecological plasticity (bi); breeding value of the genotype (BVGi). Results. According to the results of research in 2015–2017 for the agro-climatic zone of the Left Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine promising varieties as valuable genetic sources for adaptive selection of radish Raphanus sativus L. Among the analyzed varieties were selected 2 samples Lʹodyana burulʹka and Bila tsylindrychna indicators of adaptive potential and higher indicators of «total yield» (Xmed = 21,03–22,10 t/ha, SCG = 12,93–19,31) and vitamin C content in roots (Xmed = 22,47–25,43 mg/100 g, SCGi = 18,26–20,20). Another variety Ilka had a high adaptive potential and the level of manifestation in terms of «total root yield» (Xmed = 22,10 t/ha, SCGi = 11,83). There were 2 samples of 18 dney and Lʹodyana burulʹka, which showed a low dependence on environmental conditions (bi<1) and are valuable genetic sources for adaptive selection. According to the indicator "vitamin C content" in root crops, 5 samples were isolated that had better adaptive characteristics than the standard ruby Rubin: Duet (Xmed = 26,20 mg/100 g, SCGi = 20,76), Bohynya (Xmed = 22,77 mg/100 g, SCGi = 20,63), Snyezhka (Xmed = 23,29 mg/100 g, SCGi = 18,84), Bila (Xmed = 23,30 mg/100 g, SCGi = 18,57) ), Frenchpop (Xmed = 26,27 mg/100 g, SCGi = 20,85). Stable sources on the basis of "vitamin C content" in roots (bi<1) were samples: Duet), Bohynya, Bila, Bila tsylindrychna. Conclusions. There are two high-yielding varieties of sowing radish Lʹodyana burulʹka and Bila tsylindrychna, which in terms of the manifestation of the signs of "total root yield" and "vitamin C content in roots" exceeded the standard standard Ruby. in terms of adaptive potential. Key words: radish, yield, genotype, biochemical composition, adaptive ability.

Designing “good” XML documents is a very difficult task for a database designer. Although many theories for XML database design have proposed, none of commercial design tool for XML document design has been developed to assist the XML document designer. In this paper, the authors present a formal framework of XML document design by incorporating a conceptual model of XML schema called Graph-Document Type Definition (G-DTD) with a theory of database normalization. This framework is designed as a blueprint to help the XML database designers to perform the XML document schema design quickly and accurately. The G-DTD is used to describe the structure of XML documents at the schema level. A set of normal forms for G-DTD on the basis of rules proposed by Arenas and Libkin and Lv. et al is used to provide a guideline to a well-designed schema for XML documents. They develop a prototype of XML document schema design using a Z formal specification language. Finally, using a case study, this formal specification is validated to check for correctness and consistency of the specification. Thus, this gives a confidence that the authors’ prototype can be implemented successfully to generate an automatic XML document design.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a textual markup language which becomes more and more important in the Internet web service. However, some distinct disadvantages exist in XML, such as its nature of redundancy, which consumes the limited network’s bandwidth greatly especially in mobile computing. Considering the characteristics of the mobile commerce, the handsets’ memory capability and data processing time are two problems for XML being applied. This paper studies an enhancement of XML for the purpose of application in mobile e-commerce, called SXML, which means Simple XML to enhance the XML used in mobile web service. It helps XML producers minimizing the size effects of XML, e.g., the size overhead and slow implementation speed. Comprehensive simulations show that the SXML could reduce the size of XML documents and reduce the time of implementation, consequently utilize the bandwidth effectively.

XML is ubiquitously used as an information exchange platform for web-based applications in healthcare, life sciences, and many other domains. Proliferating XML data are now managed through latest native XML database technologies. XML data sources conforming to common XML schemas could be shared and integrated with syntactic interoperability. Semantic interoperability can be achieved through semantic annotations of data models using common data elements linked to concepts from ontologies. In this paper, we present a framework and software system to support the development of semantic interoperable XML based data sources that can be shared through a Grid infrastructure. We also present our work on supporting semantic validated XML data through semantic annotations for XML Schema, semantic validation and semantic authoring of XML data. We demonstrate the use of the system for a biomedical database of medical image annotations and markups.
