Organisations are a fundamental part of challenges and solutions to climate change issues. Therefore, the micro and macro factors influencing employee ecological behaviour (EEB) are a rising interest among researchers. The contemporary concept of EEB has been embraced by many organisations and attracted scholars’ attention worldwide. Nevertheless, studies that explored challenges and solutions for performing EEB at the workplace are scarce. This study explored challenges and solutions in performing EEB at the workplace and focused on qualitative research methodology. The researchers interviewed 24 academicians from five leading green research Malaysian universities. Valuable qualitative data and numerous challenges such as high costs of practising, lack of infrastructure, top management support, environmental attitude, green mindfulness, enforcement, and monitoring were identified as challenges in applying EEB from the interviews. Stringent rules and regulations, monitoring, training programmes, and monetary incentives might be efficient solutions to apply ecological behaviour at workplaces, specifically universities. In conclusion, this study has discovered the challenges and solutions in implementing EEB for a sustainable workplace by interviewing academicians from different departments of selected Malaysian higher educational institutes. Also, poor infrastructure, high cost, and the lack of top management support, environmental attitude, green mindfulness, enforcement, and monitoring were identified as the primary challenges in performing EEB. Additionally, the research also discovered significant suggestions to resolve the challenges when implementing EEB at the workplace, such as strict rules and regulations, training programmes, incentives, monitoring, and communicating change and campaigns. Therefore, the stakeholders related to the industry should be concerned with the challenges identified when applying EEB at the workplace to apply the solutions generated from the study.

Purpose – This research aims to aggregate and categorise distinct places for multi-locational work from the 1960s until today. Based on an understanding of the user needs connected to these locations, the paper aims to identify the service concepts and workplace design solutions by which these needs can be met. Design/methodology/approach – The literature review is based on academic journal papers, reports and books related to the topic. Findings – The paper categorises the main multi-locational workplace locations, namely, organisational offices, home offices, mobile workplaces and flexible offices. The user needs in these locations vary from concept to concept, and therefore, the service offers are distinct. Based on the results, the service provision of organisational offices and flexible offices should focus on providing users with the chance for socialisation using collaborative space solutions and community management policies. In the cases of home offices and mobile workplaces, service provision should instead emphasise ensuring functionalities such as efficient virtual connectivity and accessibility. Additionally, more concept-specific user needs are identified. Research limitations/implications – The paper offers an overview of and framework for future research and concept development. The limitations of cultural differences could have been investigated more. Practical implications – The results provide insight into the purposes of facilities management and workplace design when developing service concepts for multi-locational workplaces. Originality/value – The paper establishes a literature-based framework for the service concepts of places for multi-locational work.

In recent years, the business world has been riddled with scandals and fraud that consistently make international headlines. These transgressions do not just occur overnight. Rather, they begin with the kinds of moral slip-ups that take place in offices regularly. They are based in poor leadership, misguided systems, loose protocols, and, most of all, innate human behavior. This paper examines six ethical dilemmas that are the result of psychological behavior: the fudge factor, slippery slope, conflict of interest, ego depletion, revenge, and social group cheating. I explore solutions to these issues that come from a series of academic studies as well as from real-life cases in business environments to minimize or eliminate the associated moral transgressions in the workplace.

I have designed, built, and evaluated three devices to encourage informal interactions in the workplace. Previous research has found that such interactions can lead to increased idea cross-flow, creativity, productivity, and innovation at large, though few attempts to design architectural, organizational, or technological solutions have succeeded in achieving this. I believe this is because these approaches tended to focus too much on fostering an "ambient awareness" of fellow coworkers with hopes that it would indirectly lead to increased informal interactions. My hypothesis is that proactively creating such interactions as intermediated by a smart artifact in the office space would be more effective. For this thesis, I have built two versions of a device called Food Groups, as well as another one called Media Lab Mixer; Food Groups matches coworkers up to get lunch or dinner together, while Media Lab Mixer uses game dynamics to encourage them to spend more time socializing in a common space. After an initial study, the Food Groups devices received little use and were largely ineffective at fostering informal interactions. Media Lab Mixer, however, showed greater engagement and was more effective at creating the desired results, though it did not have a lasting effect after it was removed.

Change within organizations is something that happens every day. Lately, more and more continuous digital changes are occurring that all need good management. If an organization implement too many digital changes without the right management during the implementation and following the implementation, it may cause more problems than what is gained. The question is, do you manage a digital change as you manage an “ordinary” change? To find out how managers are leading digital change, a study of how one of the current digital changes, the digital workplace, has been completed to see how the implementation was/is managed and how the completed change is continuously managed. The findings show that some steps in the change process differ from earlier studies and needs to be considered, mostly policies of how digital work should be implemented and completed. And the overall wellness of the workforce is the most important factor of the continuous management. This study will add to the wide area of management, mostly to the digital management and especially to them, yet not studied, the area of the digital workplace. It will serve as an addition, focused on the digital workplace, to great and accepted management studies such as the 8-step model of leading change. The study will also give some valuable tips for the continuous management of a digital workplace.

Powell, Ronald. „Evaluating cognitive screening as a possible solution to reducing accidents and improving workplace productivity through early preventive detection of fatigue-impairment in the construction industry“. Thesis, University of Bath, 2012. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.558907.

Annotation:
Fatigue is emerging as a significant concern in the workplace principally focused on its relationship to accidents and lost productivity. Construction work exposes workers to many hazards and if safety programmes are not effective, accidents will result. Based on the sector’s safety performance, workers are not being adequately protected and improvement is needed. Fatigue-related impairment has been identified as a subject of concern for all workplaces yet it is not yet a focus within construction and few operational studies have been undertaken to develop tools to assist with identification and control of this workplace impairment. This research started with an assessment of the management of impairment within the global construction industry as well as an evaluation of tools that might assist in identification and classification of fatigue levels. In particular, cognitive tests were studied and shown to have sensitivity to natural changes in alertness in an operational setting. A small battery of cognitive tests was compared and showed that cognitive tests based on reaction times were possible candidates to help identify fatigue-related impairment in real time. The top performing tests were then used as possible surrogate measures for fatigue. To finally assess their performance capability their output was compared to estimations from an advanced actigraph-fed fatigue model. 100 volunteer workers each wore an actigraph for a month each to collect information on their personal sleep/wake cycles and activity whilst periodically doing the cognitive tests. The data from the actigraphs was analyzed by proprietary software to determine individual performance effectiveness. It was found that output from these simple, quick, and low cost tests significantly correlated with the most advanced actigraph-fed fatigue model. It is concluded that cognitive tests can be used as screens for fatigue-related impairment in the workplace. All primary parameters used for modelling showed extremely high significance (Pr( >Chisq) < 2.2e-16) in correlation to fatigue-based effectiveness results and could be developed into a screening tool for fatigue-related impairment in the construction industry as part of a fatigue management programme.

The theoretical framework explains the technical features and working mechanism and how it can implement in a real world. The methods that can be applied for such research has been discussed afterwards. Then investigation has been done to find the probable use cases and Swedish market has been analyzed to verify how fit the solution. The result chapter includes the finding of the analysis thereafter. To conclude, it has been figured out that few of the us cases for Swedish industries can certainly be applicable for such AI based wearable solution to improve the workplace safety scenario.

This research is an experiential learning history of a change management process that occurred within the local government Development Management Department of the Ethekwini Municipality in the South African province of KwaZulu Natal. The department is the gatekeeper of development for Ethekwini and offers the plans approval service in the municipal area. The department underwent an internal change management process in 2000, which aimed to streamline the plans approval process and minimize the approval timeframe. The Municipality’s decision to change the existing system was motivated by the lack of foreign direct investment into the city due to the bureaucratic plans approval process. This research used the qualitative framework and case study approach to understand the context of the requirement for the change, the implemented changes and the aftermath of the changes. A sample group of 38% (from the department) was interviewed, their responses consolidated, grouped and graphically represented, enabling the unpacking of the change management experience. The author then analyses the data against systems theory and change management theory to enable a greater appreciation of the complexity of the process and the high impacts of specific choices in the change management process. The findings of the research indicate a high degree of unresolved stress relating to the imposition of the process of change management on employees. The author draws the conclusion from the evidence presented that the inclusion of the recipients of change, in the process of change will mitigate against these stresses. This research documents the experience of the change management process by the recipients of change. In so doing it offers a greater level of insight of the way in which change is experienced, thereby promoting better choices by practitioners in the field of change management.

Implementation of a safety management system (SMS) in automotive manufacturing and assembly has been recognized as an effective way to provide a safe working environment for employees, increase employee morale, and reduce corporate costs. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX) has implemented a SMS in part of a regional goal initiated by Toyota Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA) to support the OSHA’s Injury & Illness Prevention Program (I2P2). This system provides a systematic way to identify hazards; eliminate or control the risk and incorporate in Toyota Production System. In addition, the established management system provides a framework to meet legal obligations under occupational health and safety regulation. The system implemented provides methods to manage injury and illness related to process safety, ergonomic, and industrial hygiene risks. The system uses joint labor and management teams to identify and evaluate jobs and develop and implement solutions. This paper summarizes the efforts of TMMTX in implementing and maintaining workplace activities that meet the requirements of this safety management system. The methodologies, strategies, and challenges are outlined to provide important links that are critical in sustaining these activities.

"Safety at the workplace is one of the most relevant issues for companies, due to the high number of accidents happening every year, some of which even deadly. Despite that, this number is decreasing thanks to continuous research and to an increasing application of safety procedures and devices. In line with that, the project presented in this work intends to develop and evaluate a new solution to improve operators’ safety, at a reasonable cost (including adoption and use). The usage of wearable systems (smart-glasses and smartwatches) will improve the efficacy of the solutions previously tested on mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. Although no new devices were developed, the project required the creation of a new software tool, in which a great amount of information was inserted to allow its correct functioning. The main aim of this work is to create a testing procedure to evaluate the impact of this solutions on the employee’s safety. This is extremely important to demonstrate the efficacy of new industry 4.0 applications."

User productivity is a key component of an integrated sustainable building design framework, as a consideration in addition to operating and construction costs associated with sustainable building practices. Research has shown that employee productivity increases as visible light levels rise in the workplace. Incorporating efficient lighting systems into sustainable building techniques can potentially increase user productivity while reducing electricity costs. This paper presents a single criterion approach that captures the trade-offs between costs, users, and current building standards. A model has been created to explore the feasible design space of a commercial workspace by populating a repository of both active and passive lighting components that can be accessed to generate various lighting designs. A genetic algorithm is used to optimize potential lighting choices in a given workspace, and allows the designer to explore Pareto optimal productivity solutions that best fit the desired application. The result is an optimal solution for a given workspace lighting configuration that captures user productivity while minimizing operating costs.

In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is utilized to investigate thermal comfort and energy efficiency of an office in the Intelligent Workplace (IW) of Carnegie Mellon University. First, a comprehensive geometric grid model is constructed to represent the office including the walls, floor, roof, windows, doors, fan coil units, and furnishings. Then the air flow and accompanying heat exchange with the bounding surfaces of the office are calculated based on indoor and outdoor ambient conditions, the operating conditions of the fan coil units and windows, and the occupancy of the space. The computational results of the air flow provide the means to measure whether comfort conditions have been established based on the outside conditions and on the operation of the fan coil units. The operating conditions of the fan coil units, fan speed, and chilled/heated water flow, determine their effectiveness in cooling/heating and their operating costs. This CFD air flow simulation, therefore, when generalized, provides a design support system for architects and engineers. The numerical solutions of office space are calibrated and validated by empirical operational data from the fan coil units. The design support system will enable the evaluation of the annual performance and operating cost of given fan coil units in a given building space.
