This research aims to explore the influence of different subtitling (Chinese subtitles, English captions, dual subtitles, and audio only) on students’ comprehension of workout videos and the learning of vocabulary and phrases. In this quantitative research, the participants were graduate students in the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation, and freshmen in the Department of English at National Changhua University of Education. After a listening proficiency test, the participants were randomly assigned to the four groups mentioned above, after which they watched workout videos and answered questions regarding the contents and the professional English vocabularies and phrases used in the video. Finally, a one-way Analysis of Variance was applied to analyze the scores. The scores in the listening test showed no differences across groups, suggesting that the four groups were similar in listening skills. The results show that, in terms of total score (vocabulary and phrase learning, and video content comprehension), there was no significant difference among the four groups. However, when the scores of vocabulary and phrases learning, and the scores of video content comprehension were analyzed separately using one-way ANOVA, the Dual Subtitles groups did outperform the other three groups in vocabulary and phrase learning, while there was no significant difference among groups in video content comprehension. It is inferred that the reason was probably because that the all participant had a certain English proficiency, so their obtaining basic information from the fitness-related videos did not vary, while the different presentation of subtitles and captions did make a difference when it came to learning professional vocabularies. However, when data from freshmen and graduate students were analyzed separately, the results showed that the effects of subtitles and captions on freshmen alone were as the same as the effects when both groups were pooled together, in which subtitles and captions did help viewers learn vocabulary and phrases. But, for graduate students, the Audio Only group outperformed the other three groups in video content comprehension, which was probably because the presence of subtitles and captions acted as a distraction for graduate students with better English proficiency. The results can be taken as a reference for future YouTubers in the field of workout and fitness to apply different presentation of subtitles and captions to different groups of viewers.
