Annotation:

The purpose of this study was to explore single women’s views towards the institution of marriage. This study utilized a qualitative design. In-depth face-to-face interviews with ten unmarried women living in San Bernardino County were conducted to collect the data. Participants were asked in a structured interview to provide their views towards premarital sex, cohabitation, non-marital childbearing, divorce, and same sex marriage.This study found that women’s liberal and conservative views towards premarital sex, cohabitation, non-marital childbearing, divorce, and same sex marriage did not affect a women’s desire to enter the institution of marriage. Furthermore, the study indicated that women exhibited both liberal and conservative views, regardless of religiosity. Last, this study found that women commonly exhibited the traditional view of marrying prior to starting a family, regardless of women accepting premarital sex and cohabitation. The findings of the study suggest that social workers need to have a better understanding of the diverse views and behaviors of unmarried women. The study also recommends that social workers need to increase their awareness of unmarried women’s preferred lifestyles and to diminish the stigma associated with unmarried women. Furthermore, social workers should enhance their knowledge of micro and macro services available to unmarried women including resources in family planning and women’s health.

Society has generally taught women in a rather subliminal way they should remain young, thin, and beautiful (Horton, Baker, Cote, & Deakin, 2008; Mock & Eibach, 2011; Stark- Wroblewski, Edelbaum, & Bello, 2008). As the number of older adults increase, the driving forces that determine self-perceptions of aging are essential. Using a hierarchical regression analysis, the current study examined self-perceptions of aging among older adult women. For the study, 102 females (age 60 and older) in the Red River Valley area completed a survey on selfperceptions of aging. Sense of mastery was significantly related to negative self-perceptions of aging. The findings demonstrate that one?s self-worth and ability to do things without needing help may play an important role in how an aging woman feels about herself and her own aging process.

United Kingdom (UK) health policy over the past thirty years has been predicated on a partnership model focusing on empowering service users to be fully involved in their care. Within maternity care partnership relationships have been conceptualised as empowering women to have continuity, choice and control (Department of Health (DoH), 1993), within a relationship of personal autonomy between the woman and her carers. In this study I sought to identify the extent to which the Government agenda for partnership working and choice is realised or desired by women during pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, I wanted to examine the level of alignment between the views of midwives with that of women accessing the maternity services. This study took a qualitative approach, drawing on the principles of grounded theory. In the first phase of the study a purposive sample of sixteen pregnant women were recruited and invited to complete a diary and to take part in two interviews. Women maintained diary entries following appointments with the midwife during pregnancy and childbirth. Semi–structured interviews were undertaken at 36 weeks of pregnancy and four weeks after the birth, based on the diary entries. In the second phase, four focus groups were undertaken with two groups of community midwives and birth centre midwives from two National Health Service (NHS) Trusts. Quotes from the diary-interviews from phase one were utilised to develop three vignettes which acted as a prompt during the focus group interviews. Following a thematic analysis of the data, I analysed women’s views on partnership working and choice. Most women in this study did not feel that they developed a partnership relationship with the midwife. This was associated with a lack of continuity of care and insufficient time to engage in meaningful discussion in an environment which was not conducive to shared decision making. Women described wide variations on the midwives role in supporting decision making. This ranged from decisions being dictated to midwives guiding choices and for some women, being facilitated to make informed choices. Many women described input of family and friends and widespread use of the internet as an information source. Women depicted their antenatal midwifery care as medicalised and felt that whilst their bio-medical needs were met their psycho-social and emotional needs were not. Women described the visits frequently as ‘in and out’ or ‘ticking the boxes’ to describe this approach to care. A small number of women (n=5) did experience a partnership relationship. Three of these women knew the midwife from a previous pregnancy; the remaining two women attended a midwifery led unit for all of their care. In relation to the choice agenda, most of the women who participated in this study were not aware that they had a choice about who provided their care or where they would have their care. The midwife focus groups concurred with the women’s findings and suggested that a lack of time was a significant factor hindering the formation of a partnership relationship. Midwives felt that this was exacerbated by the paperwork they were required to complete in order to audit care and meet the ‘payment by results’ agenda (DoH, 2003b). During the focus groups midwives identified strategies which could be implemented to enhance midwifery led care, including offering antenatal care to small groups of women and undertaking an antenatal home visit towards the end of pregnancy, to provide women with the time to discuss any issues that they wanted to explore in more depth. The findings from this study contribute to the current body of knowledge on midwifery led care particularly in providing the women’s perspective on partnership working. Women want to experience midwifery care that meets their psycho-social needs as well as bio-medical needs through a model of care that provides continuity. In contrast to previous research findings, the women in this study described community based care as mechanistic, clinically focused and time bound, more in line with an obstetric model of care than a midwifery model. However, midwifery led care offered within a birth centre was perceived by women as providing a more holistic, social model of care. Whilst continuity of care is not a new concept, what this study contributes is that despite successive administrations supporting partnership working and informed choice over the past twenty years, most of the women in this study did not experience this level of care. The findings from this study resulted in the development of a midwifery partnership model as a theoretical framework that could be utilised in future research studies to evaluate the extent to which a partnership relationship exists within a range of midwifery care settings.

Consistent condom use amongst women and men is one of the important safer sexual practices in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS. This dissertation examines factors which hinder or facilitate consistent male condom use, particularly as it relates to women's sexual satisfaction. Findings indicated that women felt that it was important to use condoms during sexual intercourse in order to obtain protection against HIV, STIs and pregnancy. Just over half of the women reported condom use at last sexual intercourse. Women's own sexual dissatisfaction was regarded as one of the main reasons why condoms were not consistently used by women. The results of this study suggest that that while it is important for HIV/AIDS interventions to focus it is also important to better understand a less investigated issue of women's own possible resistance to male condom use.

The initial reason I undertook this preliminary study was to inform myself and others about the views of women about the expectations of them as 'ideal workers' in paid employment. What resulted was a piece of research focused on women who recently graduated from the School of Education at the University of Waikato. This preliminary study challenged me in many ways. It challenged my existing knowledge, it challenged my beliefs and most of all it challenged me to think about the world of women through very many different sets of eyes. When I began this preliminary study there was very little previous research, which encouraged me greatly. I felt there was a large window of opportunity to present some initial findings about women and their role as 'ideal workers' in paid employment. The literature review investigated scholarly research and the TEC documents, resulting in the establishment of three macro-level elements that assist in creating the 'ideal worker'. Using feminist theory and three feminist critiques I constructed a reformulation of the 'ideal woman worker'. This preliminary study used a qualitative approach. A semi-structured interview technique was used to gather information from 5 participants. The women, aged 25 or over, had recently completed their Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). The selected findings revealed the experiences and views of the women participants which were presented as four main themes. These were the skill to manage demands between family and work, the capacity to care, the expertise to communicate, and the ability to be flexible. Three themes within the discussion were the gap between the TEC documents and women's views, the dominance of 'woman-ness', and the evidence of political ignorance. One of two main points of interest raised within the discussion was the tension between the New Right ideologies of previous governments, and the 'Third Way' ideologies of our current government. The evidence suggests that the tension between these ideologies is creating a gap between policy documents, in this case the TEC, and the understandings of the female respondents. The other main point of interest was the way women continue to adopt and appear to accept the traditional gender stereotypes. The women respondents iv involved in this preliminary study valued the capacity of women to care and nurture in both the private and public sphere. They also appeared to accept that these 'gender specific' attributes were not necessarily valued within the public sphere. In other words, these women accepted the inequalities that are still part of the world of 'paid' work. Recommendations were formulated for future theory, research and practice for those who are interested in pursuing aspects of this preliminary study. The recommendations may assist in moulding, refining and shaping the future of tertiary education, the role that women perform within the public and private sphere, and possibly the 'ideal woman worker' in New Zealand.

Abstract This chapter aims to bring attention to some of the constraints older women face in their leisure and tourism pursuits. Being female and an older adult makes the leisure experiences of older women complex; fighting against not only patriarchal views of the world, but also the ageist stereotypes that say this is who older women are and how they should act. The chapter explains how several sexist and ageist discourses contribute to older women's understandings of what activities are appropriate and accessible to them. Using a lens of intersectionality allows for the complexity of older women's leisure and tourism experiences to be more thoroughly explained by accounting for multiple social identities. The homogenizing and oppressive nature of patriarchal views, like body image, ethic of care, and ageism, are suppressive of the possible identities and full range of leisure opportunities available to older women. As the general population continues to age, a better understanding of the complexities of older women's experiences becomes imperative. This chapter also provides ideas for how the leisure and tourism communities can begin to correct the missteps currently happening in our fields.

ABSTRACT This study reports on women college students’ leadership, teamwork, diversity, and communication skills while planning and executing a leadership event in Japan over a period of seven months. Data were gathered from 11 students who completed two online questionnaires: Questionnaire A was administered while planning the event and Questionnaire B was administered after they executed the event. The questionnaires asked about the difficulties/joys of teamwork as both a leader and a follower as well as the lessons they learned through the process. An analysis of the questionnaire results indicated drastic changes in participants’ views of leadership, teamwork, diversity, and communication skills. Students’ learnings mostly occurred during teamwork planning efforts, but after the execution, the learnings become established as a sense of appreciation and self-confidence, thereby enhancing their potential as a leader and a follower. The historical path towards gender equality was not a straight line but rather complex due to different methodological and thematic directions, but it evaluated and made a great contribution to the history of women's sports. This corrected decades-long failures to assign women an exact place in the historical record and enable the presentation of a woman's historical point of view. This paper explores the problems encountered in defining the history of women's sport as well as the place of women's sport today, including lack of visibility, lack of funding and lack of women in leadership positions in sports 10th International Scientific Conference 59 organizations. Ways in which these problems can be solved are analyzed, including improving marketing strategies, recognizing and understanding the organizational and managerial dynamics of women in leadership positions, as well as improving the financing of women's sports. The use of theoretical strategies such as intersectionality, which uses the vectors of gender, race, class, and sexuality as a primary theoretical and analytical tool, is considered a good choice for insight into the connection of social life and structural inequality. As a result of all these measures, it is possible for women's sport to gain more visibility, which would condition the improvement of equality in management positions in sports organizations and better representation of women in sports in the future.

In Slovakia, the share of women in the total population of the Slovak Republic is slightly above 50%. Women entrepreneurs in Slovakia are still somewhat the exception rather than the rule. Their approach to entrepreneurship is not the same as that of men and women’s entrepreneurial story is often linked to their personal lives. Women’s entrepreneurship is a hot topic at the moment and by analysing it, it is possible to find out what are the characteristics, qualities, motives and factors influencing women’s entrepreneurial activity in the Slovak Republic. The aim of our paper is to evaluate, through the analysis and development of statistical indicators, the position of women in the labour market in the Slovak Republic not only in terms of numbers but also in relation to the labour market (number of economically active women, employment, unemployment of women in the Slovak Republic) and also the degree of women’s involvement in entrepreneurial activities in order to obtain a comprehensive view of the representation of women in the entrepreneurial environment in the Slovak Republic.

Having said that, time series analysis of the GBS shows that there has been a concentration of the Gender Budget in just 5-6 ministries and 10- 12 schemes over the last 17 years. Moreover, the uneven adoption of GRB at the State level has led to a need for enhancing gender-responsive initiatives post COVID-19. Moving forward, India needs to reprioritize GRB at both the Central and State levels through a phased approach focusing on five key priority areas, i.e., strengthening the process of formulating the GBS, gender disaggregated data collection of scheme beneficiaries, gender mainstreaming in program design, skill training and capacity building, and strengthening institutions responsible for GRB. Abstract Within a continuously changing environment, leadership qualities cannot be static. The ability to adapt leadership styles pro-actively or in response to change, is an important quality. This paper reports on a survey carried out amongst a small group of women in higher education, at a women’s leadership academy in South Africa. It explored whether, with the dawn of democracy in South Africa in 1994 and post this period, there was a difference in the view of the characteristics of leadership in higher education compared to the apartheid period (pre- 1994), and what that view would be if it had changed. It also further explored whether there was a view that the characteristics of leadership was gender specific. Lastly, questions focused on whether there was a need for continued support for women towards and in leadership. Comments indicated that participants felt that more women had been included in higher education leadership post-democracy, but that leadership qualities were still gender specific, with traditionally viewed masculine characteristics still predominant. The responses also reflected a continued need for support and development for women in and towards higher education leadership, with various suggestions on the forms this should take. Responses resonated with the scholarly literature arguments for adaptability in leadership, considering organisational and environmental sustainability and ever-increasing complexities of these milieus. The paper reports on the findings of the survey using a qualitative approach, although numerical data is minimally presented at times. The focus is on the comments to the survey questions, with a qualitative analysis and presentation of findings, linking these to the literature on leadership qualities and support for women towards and in leadership. Objective: to assess the biopsychosocial impacts of alcohol consumption in women. Methodology: Systematic Literature Review, carried out in August 2023, using the online databases, PubMed and Medline, over the last five years, following the PRISMA protocol (2020). Result: alcohol consumption in the female population can lead to biopsychosocial harm, culminating in clinical conditions focused on psychological distress and diseases of the cardiovascular, neurological, and hepatic systems, depending on the pattern of daily use. Conclusion: an increase in psychiatric conditions, neurological and liver diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases in women was observed, resulting from alcohol consumption. This increase is worrying from the point of view of public health, more specifically women's health, since, physiologically, women are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol, compared to men, and therefore more likely to present negative consequences related to alcohol consumption.

Sociolinguists (Holmes 2008; Meyerhof 2006) assists to describe the Japanese language a having gender exclusive elements. Personal pronouns, sentence-ending particles and lexicon used exclusively by one gender have been cataloged in English by researchers such as Ide (1979), Shibamoto (1985) and McGloin (1991). While there has been some research showing that Japanese women’s language use today is much more diverse than these earlier descriptions suggested (e.g. studies in Okamoto and Smith 2004) and that some young Japanese girls use masculine pronouns to refer to themselves (Miyazaki 2010), prescriptive rules for Japanese use still maintain gender-exclusive elements. In addition, characters in movie and TV dramas not only adhere to but also popularize these norms (Nakamura 2012). Thus, Japanese etiquette and media ‘texts’ promote the perpetuation of gender-exclusive language use, particularly by females. However, in the past three decades, Japanese society has made significant shifts towards gender equality in legal code, the workplace and education. The researcher therefore decided to investigate how Japanese women use and view their language in the context of these changes. Data comes from three focus groups. The first was conducted in 2013 and was composed of older women members of a university human rights research group focused on gender issues. The other two were conducted in 2013 and 2019, and were composed of female university students who went through the Japanese school system after the Japan Teachers’ Union adopted a policy of gender equality, thus expressing interest in gender issues. The goal was to determine whether Japanese women’s language use is shifting over time. The participants’ feelings about these norms were also explored - especially whether or not they feel that the norms constrain their ability to express themselves fully. Although the new norms are not yet evident in most public contexts, the language use and views of the participants in this study represent the sub-text of this shift in Japanese usage.

This book builds on presentations of the Workshop on Men as Supportive Partners in Reproductive and Sexual Health held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1998. By analyzing the experiences of nongovernmental organizations across India, this publication reviews important concerns that should inform the discourse on male partnership. The previous views of reaching men as contraceptive users and removing them as impediments to women’s efforts to control fertility are too limited. The argument is not whether men and women should use family planning, but rather the extent to which men can become supportive of women’s reproductive and sexual rights and actively take part in responsible and healthy reproductive behavior. Applied research is needed to learn how to stimulate and support positive and healthy sexual partnerships between women and men. It is important to demonstrate that contraceptive safety and continuation, safer sexual behaviors, use of reproductive health services, reduction in morbidity and mortality, and other health outcomes can be improved through the positive involvement of men as supportive partners and responsible parents. This publication provides a wealth of information on male partnership issues.

Empowering adolescent girls through education has become a priority among numerous stakeholder. However, recent evidence suggests that education alone may not be suffcient if women remain in a low-empowerment equilibrium and face internal constraints as they relate to aspirations, self-efficacy, leadership, and other life (soft) skills. We study the long-term impacts of a school-based upper-secondary intervention, the Educate! Experience, designed to enhance adolescents’ leadership and social entrepreneurship skills in Uganda. The program was implemented as a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) in 48 schools. Four years post-intervention, we document lasting impacts on a wide array of leadership and soft skills. Overall, Educate! graduates developed skills that are traditionally associated with greater focus on long-term goals; they reported being more in control of aspects of their lives (self-efficacy and grit) and more empowered to implement actions towards their plans. Young women in the treatment group are also more likely to complete secondary education, delay family formation, enroll in tertiary education, and pursue STEM and Business majors relative to their counterparts in the control group. The program yielded socially desirable and gender relevant spillovers, including expansions in women’s agency. Both male and female Educate! graduates embraced more progressive views concerning women’s standing in the society and women’s ability to exercise their agency to engage in the labor market and refuse sex. The incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) also improved among Educate! graduates, as did their attitudes toward IPV social acceptability.

This paper highlights the case of MUVA Assistentes, a public works programme (PWP) that provided training and mentoring to young vulnerable women (YVW) in urban Mozambique. Our paper draws out the main learnings from the MUVA Assistentes project to inform the design of other PWPs that have women’s empowerment as their major aim. We show through our analysis that it is possible for PWPs to achieve women’s empowerment, but only if they go beyond a sole focus on income provision through paid work to women. Instead, we argue that if PWPs formulate their theory of change in line with Kabeer (1999)’s notion of empowerment, with its three interrelated dimensions (resources, agency and achievements), women’s empowerment through PWPs can be both realistic and long-lasting. PWPs have always been popular in low- and middle-income countries as tools for poverty alleviation and mitigating high unemployment rates among young people. Given the disproportionate impact of poverty on women and girls, many existing PWPs often include a ‘gender’ component in their theories of change. A common limitation of such PWPs and theories of change is their overarching focus on providing income opportunities, which they suggest leads to women’s empowerment. However, this has not been the case for most PWPs; hence, learnings from a project that has led to substantive empowerment of young women are highly valuable. The MUVA Assistentes project was a component of the broader MUVA Programme running in urban Mozambique. It provided training to YVW and gave them paid work as classroom assistants in primary schools for one academic year. The project addressed two major problems plaguing Mozambique today: (1) high unemployment among urban young people, especially women; and (2) poor educational outcomes among primary school students. Through a dedicated focus on mentoring the participants, the project supported these women to build soft assets and skills to enable them to realise their future goals and aspirations. This paper highlights that the MUVA Assistentes project led to three major outcomes: (1) building technical skills; (2) improving opportunities for women’s employability in the labour market (while improving public goods); and (3) building soft assets through training and mentoring. Through a close discussion of the experiences of four women participants, we find that the MUVA Assistentes led to an increase not only in income opportunities for YVW, but also in their sense of self‑worth and confidence to exercise their agency in achieving their goals. Further, the project also provided a critical public good by working towards improving the quality of classroom outcomes in government primary schools. We conclude that through building these skills and increasing women participants’ self-worth, PWPs can build women’s resources, agency and achievements, thereby moving closer to achieving a holistic view of empowerment, which encouragingly extends beyond the PWPs’ duration as well.

This CREID Policy Briefing provides recommendations to address the marginalisation, discrimination and exclusion faced by Kakai women in Iraq. Members of the Kakai minority have faced discrimination and marginalisation during many different periods of the Iraqi state. Prior to the US occupation of Iraq in 2003, Kakais were deported to other regions as part of a government drive to alter the demographics of Kurdish majority areas. After 2003, the Kakais faced oppression as a minority group during a long period of sectarian fighting. This oppression continued with the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist attack on Iraq in 2014. The marginalisation of the Kakais is exacerbated by a lack of legal recognition and differing views over their minority status.
