This study discusses queer theory as regards the portrayal of Orlando in Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando: A Biography. The character is first analyzed in light of the intersections between gender, race, class, and nation, and subsequently in terms of the poetic persona, understood from both liberal and radical perspectives. The findings show that the character can be understood to destabilize gender fixity in the construction of a poetic persona, which confirms the tentative hypothesis. Findings also show that there is a conflict in the novel as it presents at the same time a transgressive text and a normatizing subtext, a conflict that must be criticized for its implications in cultural studies regarding queer theories, gender studies, and emancipatory politics.

The aim of this study is to analyse how pornography is used in the American comics X-Men, published by Marvel under the authorship of Chris Claremont.

I have applied Butler and MacKinnons theories about pornography as a performative speech, to this special art form. I have also investigated how censorship has influenced the comics evolution and whether it has affected the way women and sexual and ethnical minorities are represented. To corroborate how these theories apply, I have analysed three main female fig-ures in The X-Men comics - Storm, Phoenix and Shadowcat - and I have tried to identify how they relate to existing stereotypes.

The conclusion of this essay is that the women characters in X-Men break the existing stereo-types and create new implications. This reinforces Butler’s theory about the possibility to re-verse hate speech and diminishes MacKinnons perspective of pornography as an imperative.

Title: Willing to shop like a (wo)man? - A consumer perspective on the perception of Pink Tax Subject: Bachelor thesis in business administration, 15 hp Authors: Maja Eriksson & Elina Magnusson Purpose: The purpose of this study is, therefore, to compare the perceptions about the Pink Tax between men and women in Sweden, including how the price influences the willingness to buy as well as perceived price fairness and perception of gendered products. Methodology: The study was conducted by qualitative interviews with a semi structured interview. 8 respondents within the ages of 20-25 were interviewed. Empirical findings: Swedish men and women both perceive Pink Tax as discriminatory and unethical. They also share an understanding of the potential consequences of the issue. Both men and women are heavily influenced by the gender specification of products and gender based marketing. Women have a more extensive awareness of the Pink Tax and the price discrimination it causes. Men however, understand the reasonings behind gender based pricing to a greater extent than women do. Women are more likely to purchase items marketed towards the opposite sex than men are. Lastly, men and women’s shopping behaviors are based on internal and external factors such as the involvement of products and personal values, rather than solely being distinguished by their gender. Limitations: Due to the limited time frame given, the respondents for the empirical study had to be limited, making it more difficult to generalize the results on the entire swedish population within the ages 20-25. Implications: Bringing attention to the unexplored issue of perception of the Pink Tax on the Swedish market is something this study aims to shine a light on. In the hope of stimulating the conversation of the Pink Tax, the society could become more aware of this subject, provoking action from companies as well as legislators in addition to increasing the knowledge among consumers.  Key words: Pink Tax, price discrimination, gender based pricing, perception, pricing, purchases, gender, men, women and Sweden.

Community colleges are tasked with helping all students regardless of their academic background to receive a degree, certificate, or other form of education. Many of these students need support in learning the mathematical content necessary to take college-level courses. Since a large proportion of students in these developmental classes are students of color, and unlikely to be successful, developmental courses are not leveling the playing field of higher education. In-class computer-centered (ICCC) classes are a possible solution to this social justice issue because they provide students with flexible learning opportunities. Students can work independently on a schedule that matches their needs and can access the multiple learning tools embedded in the software in ways that make the most sense for their own learning. Research on ICCC mathematics courses has primarily compared success rates with those of traditional lecture classes. These quantitative studies provided a limited view of student activity in an ICCC class and did not demonstrate how students were navigating these courses or the nature of their experiences. This study uses a qualitative research design to explore student actions and their experiences relative to their success. In my analysis, I utilized Bandura's construct of agency, defined as the capacity to understand, predict and alter the course of one's life's events (Bandura, 2008). My framework also considers agency as a temporal phenomenon residing in the past, present, and future (Emirbayer & Mische, 1998). Agency is operationalized temporally and by using four characteristics, intention, forethought, reflection, and reaction. This study uses case study research design where students are interviewed and observed in an ICCC class. In it I illustrate the various forms of agency students bring and leverage in the ICCC mathematics classroom in their attempts to be successful. Findings indicate that the students who were successful were most adept at leveraging a variety of resources to help them work towards their goals. There is the assumption that students need flexibility and individualized learning in developmental courses; these needs are addressed by ICCC and are a way in which the ICCC format perfects the traditional lecture. However, this research demonstrates that the question of how to best help developmental students remains open.

Characters’ identities are integral to how audiences relate to them. But what happens when the character suddenly alters his or her outward appearance? Are they still the same person? This thesis seeks to argue that disguise does not alter a character’s true nature, as evidenced by Pyrocles in Sir Philip Sidney’s The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia and the Prince in Margaret Cavendish’s The Convent of Pleasure. Both Pyrocles’ suit of Philoclea and the Prince’s suit of Lady Happy are successful because, however subversive they appear at first, they ultimately adhere to societal norms of the time. The relationship between the cross-dressed prince and his love interest in both works only appears to subvert heteronormative expectations for the time, but ultimately adheres to these societal norms once the disguised character’s true identity is revealed to his chosen partner.

In this thesis, I chart the development of Schreiner’s changing views on race. Focusing mainly on her political works, The Political Situation (1896), Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland (1897), An English-South African’s View of the Situation (1899) and Thoughts on South Africa (1923), I also allude to The Story of an African Farm (1883), From Man to Man (1926) and Undine (1929). Looking at how and why her opinions on social Darwinism shifted from her juvenile novels of the 1870s, to her polemical texts of the 1890s, I examine the key areas of her thinking, such as miscegenation and racial and sexual exploitation, and the ways in which she applied them to her fellow white and black South Africans. Similarly exploring her childhood jingoism, her sojourn to Europe (1881-1889) and her return to South Africa, I explore her growing disillusionment with the British and growing identification with the Boers and black natives. I also consider the impact that her friendships with mathematician, Karl Pearson, and diamond magnate, Cecil Rhodes, amongst others, had on Schreiner and the way these works, her life, letters and expositions on race have been interpreted by critics and biographers up until the present day.

Migration has gained new expressions and acquired new meanings in recent decades. Cape Verde and the Philippines have large diasporas in relation to their population. This study attempts to bring two worlds closer and view similar phenomena in a wider context. It explores contemporary Cape Verdean and Filipina female migrations in a comparative perspective. It is a transnational-oriented research guided by the analytical framework of transnationalism. It problematizes the association between migrant women and the inability to effectively manage old ties and form new bonds. It is my objective to discuss how Cape Verdean and Filipina migrant women live, define and negotiate their relationships with people and places, given the transnational configuration of contemporary migration. I argue that they reassess and appropriate these relationships with reference to distinct ideas and criteria resulting from their migratory experiences. My study suggests that migrant women are historically, socially and culturally situated subjects. Not only do they share the capacity to forge meaningful relationships, but they also navigate through a sea of multiple and overlapping identities and belongings.

This thesis deals with the nowadays largely unknown Austrian author Raoul Auernheimer (1876-1948). It is an attempt at a presentation of his life and work, the main part dealing with four of his works, the play Talent (1900), the long story Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt (1913), the novel Das Kapital (1923) and the autobiographical report Die Zeit im Lager (1939). My purpose is to investigate to what extent his works reflect time, Auernheimers life and the city of Vienna. An introductory chapter on life and work deals with the most important events in his life. It is clear, that he was one of the major personalities in the field of culture in Vienna before and after World War I and an outstanding intellectual who stood for democratic values. When he was 61 the Nazis forced him to leave Austria, after first having put him into the concentration camp Dachau for five months. He was then in exile in the USA where, in spite of a heart condition, he lived on for nine more years. A section on secondary literature and an almost complete catalogue of his works show their versatility, scope and scale. In this context, his significant role as a drama critic, journalist and essayist becomes evident. The city of Vienna is a central theme in the four works I examined and each date of origin (1900, 1913, 1923, 1939) is significant for the work itself. Work and date indicate radical changes in his literary production and constitute a step in the direction of becoming a person who thinks politically. However these changes meant very little to his literary style, which shows continuity. In his works he basically remains a Feuilletonist and playwright. More and more Auernheimer shows his solidarity with the vulnerable groups of society. This is conveyed indirectly, virtually through ‘participating observation‘. By each time describing conditions accurately and exactly, he criticizes current deficiencies. Concerning language it is apparent, that irony is important to his style. Since he views his world critically, he uses it to make social conditions clear. The style of the Feuilleton, in which linguistic brilliance and harmony of text are important components, is characteristic of this author. It is the style of the journalist and critic. Keywords: Raoul Auernheimer, continuity, change, life, work, journalist, critic, Talent, Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt, Das Kapital, Die Zeit im Lager, time influence, social conditions, participating observation, criticism of current deficiencies, city of Vienna, style of the Feuilleton, irony   Lennart Weiss, Department of Modern Languages, Box 636, Uppsala University, SE-751 26 Uppsala, Sweden   © Lennart Weiss 2010

The issue of underrepresentation of women in male-dominated or so called non-traditional occupations is common in both military organisations and society in general. An example of this is the low number of female pilots in the Swedish Armed Forces. Previous studies have shown that the issue of underrepresentation of women, amongst other things, lies within women’s willingness to apply. Similar studies focusing on recruitment material suggest that military organisations employ different forms of masculinity in their recruiting strategies. However, what previous studies have not explored is the connection between masculine recruitment material and the will to apply. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to study this connection through a discourse analysis of the Swedish Armed Forces’ recruitment material for pilots from a gender perspective. The analysis reveals that the material implicitly conveys a masculine discourse with focus on challenges, missions and progress, almost exclusively within a flying context. This discourse in relation to feminine traits and values may therefore be a reason why many women do not apply to become pilots.

No other topic has dominated the Nigerian literature as much as the Nigerian Civil War and female authors increasingly interfere in its literary representation. The thesis evaluates 34 literary texts by 16 female Nigerian authors - 12 novels and 22 short stories - and analyses them as distinctive corpus whose individual texts are in a state of dialogue both with each other and with texts from male authors. The female authors use, in their "war talk", literary strategies like "re-reading" and "re-writing" of texts from the "Centre". On the one hand, these strategies enable them to make the blind spots of a male dominated literary discourse apparent/visible on the other hand, they facilitate the negotiation of gender relations and of the war itself, its causes, trigger points and consequences. The female authors represent war as "sexual disorder", as gender war. The study shows that in order to be able to locate an author''s perspective (and to avoid rash conclusions) it is essential to consider the different factors determining it - besides ethnicity and gender, also age, race, the grade of emotional involvement or distance etc. It is in this regard, where the paratexts play an important part, as in these authors express their personal views and comments on the war. The thesis is located at the interfaces of several disciplines: literary, historical and gender studies. The introduction deals with the theoretical backgrounds in the context of war, literary representation and gender. The first chapter is dedicated to the historical context of the Nigerian Civil War including the role of women. The second chapter looks at the paratexts, different representations of the war''s causes, the self-image, the enemy''s image and the future. The third chapter finally deals with the question how the relationship between Civil War and gender war is negotiated/conveyed through the medium of the literary texts. In the conclusion the results are summarized and prospects for future research are discussed. The appendix contains a preliminary bibliography of all literary texts on the Nigerian Civil War written by female authors.

This research-creation dissertation focuses on the emergence of electroclash as a dominant form of electronic dance music in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. This project addresses the following questions: what is distinct about the genre and its related practices, both in and out of the studio? Why do rock and electro come together at this point and in this way? Why is electroclash affectively powerful for musicians, audiences and listeners? And, what does the genre portend in terms of our understandings of the politics of electronic music? The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way key electroclash producers often used a hybrid approach to production involving the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production software with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound.

This thesis will study two transsexual and transgender novels, Angela Carter’s The Passion of New Eve (1982) and Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues (1992), to investigate the two transsexual/transgender characters’ manipulation of the function of sex reassignment surgery and gender performativity to consider the problem of transsexual/transgender identity and sexual/gender disintegration. This study also further examines how the transsexual/transgender characters tackle the cultural construction of heterosexual hegemony, homosexual exclusivity, and sexual violence to re-embody their transsexual/transgender identity. Chapter one focuses on Angela Carter’s The Passion of New Eve to analyze the transsexual character Eve/lyn, who compulsorily accepts the sex reassignment surgery to engender the bodily metamorphosis of male-to-female body. Because of the bodily metamorphosis, Mother’s castration results in Eve/lyn not only censuring hers/his deconstruction of male subjectivity but also excluding her/his male-to-female body. Chapter two examines Eve/lyn’s embodiment of the stereotype of female images via gender performativity. In considering transsexual/transgender mind-body opposition and her/his imitation of other women’s behaviors, Eve/lyn condemns the binary sexual/gender mechanism which forcibly materializes the regulatory ideal of heterosexuality in cultural norms. Chapter three will examine the transgender character Jess Goldberg whose masculine woman image narrates his/her experience of shame in different situations and occasions in Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues. Jess recognizes that his/her image as a masculine woman is always regarded as the other rather than a subject. Hence, in order to avoid shame and sexual violence, Jess decides to undergo a breast reduction surgery and inject male hormones, which hides his/her real biological sex to pertain to the normality of a masculine man in a heterosexual society. However, even though Jess successfully embodies a heterosexual man, the feeling of shame still affects his/her self-ambivalence with regard to his/her sexual/gender and self-identity. In the novel, the relation of shame and transgender experience is important to the exploration of the ambivalence of self-identity and the reconstruction of transgender subjectivity. In analyzing of Angela Carter’s The Passion of New Eve (1982) and Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues (1992), issues of bodily metamorphosis, mind-body opposition, and the resistance of sexual violence point out the quandaries of the ambivalence of transsexual/transgender subjectivity, heterosexual hegemony, and homosexual exclusivity to further investigate the transsexual/transgender subjectivity and sexual diversity in our society.
