Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe first paper provides evidence that a liquidity shock to closed-end funds can transmit to open-end funds. Using the failure of the market for auction rate securities we show that forced asset sales of highly levered closed-end funds result in temporary price declines in those assets. Open-end funds that hold significant numbers of the affected stocks in turn experience outflows, forcing them to conduct additional fire-sales. These forced sales induce additional price pressure consistent with financial contagion. The second paper examines whether mutual bond funds increase their risk exposure through securities lending transactions by reinvesting the cash collateral of these transactions in risky assets. Consistent with such behavior, we find that the return volatility of government bond funds increases with the percentage of securities on loan. This relation is only evident among funds whose lending agent likely reinvests the lending collateral riskily and disappears if the lending program is managed by agents who typically cannot make risky reinvestments. The third paper provides a new way to measure the trading activity by mutual funds in the last three days of their reporting periods. Consistent with window dressing, heavy end-of-period (EoP) traders report more winner, fewer loser stocks and higher return and rank gaps, yet perform no better. Stocks with a high positive EoP trade imbalance show significant price increases of about 20 bps at the end of reporting periods in June and December. Inconsistent with information trading, prices revert within a week. Liquid stocks appreciate less strongly and revert more quickly. Finally, we show that window dressing, portfolio pumping, or fund flows alone are unlikely to explain our results.

Inom Europeiska Unionen (EU) har en avfallshierarki upprättats för att minska slit- och slängmentaliteten. Andrahandsmarknaden är en del i detta då stegen är minimera, återanvända, återvinna, energiutvinna och deponera. För att främja utvecklingen av förnyelsebar el finns elcertifikat till de producenter som tillhandahåller detta, däribland vindkraft. Efter 15 år slutar elcertifikatet att utbetalas för ett specifikt vindkraftverk, och då finns olika scenarier för vindkraftverket. De scenarier som undersöks i detta examensarbete är export av verket till länder som inte kommit lika långt som Sverige med förnyelsebar energi, försäljning inom Sverige till privatpersoner och återvinning av verket, som främst består av metaller och därmed är återvinningsbart. I dessa tre scenarier avses det att samma plats återanvänds för nya större verk som producerar mer. Ytterligare två scenarier är att halvera antalet verk i en park och på så vis få tillgång till gratis reservdelar till de återstående verken samt fortsatt drift av verket, det vill säga köra dem så länge det går. För att säkerställa nedmontering av vindkraftverk och återställning av platsen finns olika ekonomiska alternativ för verksamhetsutövaren. Oavsett vilket alternativ som väljs ska summan resultera i 500 000 kronor per vindkraftverk enligt tillståndet till verket. Miljöprövningsdelegationen (MPD) avgör om verksamhetsutövarens valda alternativ är betryggande och beslutar utifrån det. För att se vad som är det mest lönsamma scenariot spelar den ekonomiska delen en stor roll för arbetet. Eftersom vindkraft är en stor investering blir investeringskalkylen känslig även för små förändringar. Inflationen, räntan, elpriset och elcertifikatpriset är poster som kan variera mycket men eftersom det är i princip omöjligt att förutspå hur utvecklingen kommer se ut är inflationen, räntan och elcertifikatpriset satt på en fast nivå. Elpriset är sedan beroende av inflationen. Med hjälp av dessa antaganden och Microsoft Excel har det mest lönsamma scenariot tagits fram vilket är att sälja verket och sätta upp ett nytt större på platsen. Sverige har som mål att fram till år 2020 ha 30 TWh, motsvarande 20 %, el från vindkraft i elnätet. Idag är andelen 6,5 TWh, motsvarande 4 %. För att detta ska bli verklighet måste tillståndsprocessen förenklas och gå snabbare än vad fallet är idag. Jämförs Sverige med Danmark har de redan 28 % vindkraftsel och siktar på 50 %.

The introduction of the internet has increased the habits of online purchasing as consumers’ preference. This forces retailers to adapt and change their way of merchandising their products from the store shelf to the world of the internet. How do factors like the environmental, demographic, and economic affect online business? This research studies the online sales of the hard window covering industry within the United States. This research is a study of Company A’s customers’ online sales in 50 states within the country of United States. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the Window Covering Industry and their background. The next chapter introduces different varieties of window coverings and explains their functionality including their features and benefits. Next is the introduction of Company A and its background. This research uses the data provided by Company A to analyze the correlations between online sales (dependent variables) and independent variables including environment, demography, and economics in the United States. Lastly, data are pooled and analytical tools; descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis; are used to emphasize the data and to search out their impact of each factor on the sales of different categories of hard window coverings. The results of the correlation analysis and regression analysis reveal that certain ethnic groups, Non-Hispanic White, Black and Asian affect the sales more than others. The data also suggest that Asians favor both Light Filtering and Room Darkening product categories and Blacks have a high preference of product categories in Light Blocking. Regional wise, the data also suggest that the best sales are in the South of United States. But the best testing ground for new products would be in the Northeast region of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The average annual temperature is more influential on the overall sales of window coverings than the median household income. And yet, the number of clear days in the sky would decrease the sales of certain window coverings. This result is much more than anticipated and not only helps the sales on the internet, but also the sales in the retail stores.

Using Expedia’s search and purchase data, I identified the user’s booking window and which events have a higher effect on the booking likelihood. The tourism industry has seen exponential growth over the last two decades, much due to global socioeconomic changes, globalization and internet massification. Portugal is finally reaping its share of profit and continues winning “best destination” prizes year after year. It is now part of a very competitive ecosystem where distribution plays a determinant role in whether the touristic product survives or not. Big players like Expedia and Booking.com have taken control of a big chunk of the market’s revenue because they understood that the large amounts of data they have enabled predicting demand hence offering highly competitive deals. Only by understanding the booking drivers one can negotiate better distribution deals and lower commissions through making better sales predictions and enhancing marketing and revenue strategies, hence the purpose of this study being to use data mining to find patterns in room bookings, enabling this industry to become an even more important source for the country’s GDP. Through the analysis of consumer behavior and booking times and the use of time series analysis and machine learning, it is possible to find patterns that can be applied across not only Hospitality but other industries as well. By looking for the connections and the relevance of each feature on the final predictions, a new window of opportunity will open for marketing and sales professionals.

The purpose ofthis study was to build a sales forecasting model that would be practical and cost effective, from the various forecasting methods and techniques available. Various forecast models, methods and techniques are outlined in the initial part of this study by the author. The author has outlined some of the fundamentals and limitations that underline the preparations of forecasting models. It is not the purpose of this study to microscopically dissect each forecasting model, method or technique. Various forecasting options were assessed in a manner that could provide some relevance to the study, thus providing a general framework for the construction of the specific sales forecasting model. Appropriate data sources were described and analysed. The data was further tested using the author's chosen quantitative forecasting techniques. Results were interpreted, and included into the author's untested sales model. It is the author's opinion that the sales model is practical, cost effective and gives a general sales forecast.
