Four genera of Chinese Empoascini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) are reviewed. Two of these, Goifa Dworakowska 1977 and Ifugoa Dworakowska & Pawar 1974, are reported for the first time from China. Three genera, Homa Distant 1908, Goifa Dworakowska 1977 and Schizandrasca Anufriev 1972, are redescribed and the differences between each genus and related genera are discussed. Homa sinensis Qin & Zhang, sp. n. from Yunnan Province (S.W. China) is described and illustrated; one new combination, Goifa tangailensis (Ahmed & Samad, 1972) n. comb. (from Paolia Lower), is proposed and one new synonym is created, i.e. Goifa aprocessa Mann & Sohi, 1993 is a junior synonym of Goifa tangailensis (Ahmed & Samad, 1972).

When still a teenager, Raymond Hamet (1890–1972) published a two-part, 64-page monograph of Kalanchoe (Crassulaceae subfam. Kalanchooideae) in which 51 accepted species, one accepted nothospecies, and ten species of unresolved application (“Species non satis notæ”) were included. The first part of the monograph appeared in November 1907 and the second (and final) part was published in January 1908. In addition to treating the three new names that were unambiguously validly published in part 1, Hamet (in 1907) also mentioned and provided sufficient descriptive text to validly publish one new name and one of the two new combinations that were only formally treated in part 2 (in 1908). This matter is addressed to determine the correct dates and bibliographic citations for the nomenclatural novelties included in his monograph of Kalanchoe. It is shown that, with one exception, K. crenata (Baker 1883: 139) Hamet (1908: 19), nom. illeg. [here deliberately cited with its author attribution], all the names of new taxa and one new combination were validly published in part 1 (November 1907) of the monograph, despite some only being formally treated taxonomically in January 1908. In addition, despite disparate references to K. tieghemii in the second part of the monograph, i.e., the part published in January 1908, this name was also validly published in 1907 and not much later in 1914, as has been supposed.

The shoo fly Complex of Late Devonian and older Paleozoic age is a regionally extensive rock assemblage in the northern Sierra Nevada of northern California. It consists chiefly of a coherent unit of phyllite, quartzose sandstone, and chert, and a melange unit (Hannah and Moores, 1986). Several limestone lenses in the Taylorsville area comprise the Montgomery Limestone (Diller, 1892, 1908; McMath, 1958; Figure 1). The Montgomery was long considered to be Silurian, largely on the basis of corals, brachiopods, and cephalopods (Diller, 1892, 1908; McMath, 1958; Berry and Boucot, 1970; Merriam, 1972). However, recent analyses of the biota indicate an Ashgill (middle Maysvillian–Gamachian) age (Boucot and Potter, 1977; Harris, personal commun. cited in Hannah and Moores, 1986, p. 790; Potter et al., 1990b; present study).

This study explores the role of Muhammad Arsyad Thalib Lubis in Islamic education and the organization of Al Jam'iyatul Washliyah in North Sumatra between 1930-1972. This study uses historical methods to reconstruct events related to Muhammad Arsyad Talib Lubis and his influence on the development of Islamic education. Data was collected through literature studies and interviews. The results showed that Muhammad Arsyad Talib Lubis, who was born in Stabat, Langkat, in 1908, had played an essential role in establishing Al Washliyah University and developing Al Jam'iyatul Washliyah from a debating club into an influential educational organization. Lubis died on July 6, 1972, but his legacy and principles still live among Al Washliyah's disciples and the wider community.

Their success stimulated formation of a second company, the Newfoundland Steam Whaling Co Ltd, which in 1908 mounted a pelagic expedition to hunt in both hemispheres, particularly from the South Orkney and South Shetland Islands and off northern Labrador. The expedition was a failure, and Newfoundland whaling remained a totally shore-based industry until cessation in 1972.

In this article, I map some of the US-Brazil networks of intellectuals who helped to develop the field of Afro-Brazilian studies in the 1930s. While discussing the emergence and institutionalization of the field, I highlight the role of figures such as Rüdiger Bilden (1893-1980), Melville Herskovits (1895-1963), Donald Pierson (1900-1995), Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987), Arthur Ramos (1903-1949), Ruth Landes (1908-1991), and Edison Carneiro (1912-1972). Together, these scholars from the United States and Brazil were key to the development of Afro-Brazilian studies as an interdisciplinary field.

Resumo: É comum à critica contemporânea sobre Femando Pessoa assumir perspectivas e optar por mecanismos de análise que reportam inadvertidamente algumas dominantes criticas típicas da base da tradição que a precede. Devido à ausência de um estudo que objetive a dilucidação de seus mecanismos de apropriação e descrição, as análises fundadoras do cânone critico pessoano passam a atuar como efeitos de sentido sobre as mais recentes, de modo pouco claro e, na maioria das vezes, prejudicial ao desenvolvimento de uma recepção mais transparente e aprofundada. Considerando-a como uma das bases da fortuna critica sobre o autor, esta dissertação consiste no estudo da critica de Adolfo Casais Monteiro sobre Femando Pessoa. Mais especificamente, trata-se da delimitação de suas principais linhas de força argumentativa, dos vetores teóricos que a influenciam e dos mecanismos de análise empregados na descrição da poesia de Pessoa. Resumidamente, ficam aparentes quatro diferentes pólos de tensão nessa critica, e que, ora mais, ora menos latentes, atuam de modo simultâneo sobre ela: a base geracional presencista, a critica de João Gaspar Simões, o imanentismoeliotiano e a atração pela linguageme pela autovisão do criticado. O legado deixado por Casais Monteiro para os leitores contemporâneos de Pessoa é condicionado, em suma, pela tentativa de articulação desses pólos de tensão como componentes dessa abordagemfundamental

Après les temps difficiles de la guerre d'Algérie, la nouvelle politique fut initiée par le Président Edgar Faure. La France et la Chine décidèrent le 27 janvier 1964 d'échanger des missions diplomatiques. La nouvelle politique de Paris était ambitieuse, la France voulait affirmer sa présence dans les domaines culturels, économiques et politiques. Les évènements dramatiques de la Révolution culturelle (1966-1969) tuèrent les espoirs d'une nouvelle ère dans les relations franco-chinoises. La reconstruction du champ photographique en Allemagne de l'Ouest entre 1945 et le début des années soixante témoigne des bouleversements qui ont affecté le pays après le traumatisme nazi. En 1945, la photographie a ses fondements détruits. Les structures étatiques - de la production industrielle aux groupes amateurs - sont anéanties par les troupes alliées. Dans un élan de résistance à la main-mise étrangère, les Allemands redéfinissent les contours de la pratique photographique. Celle-ci se construit autour d'évènements - foires, expositions, prix - et d'organismes - magazines, sociétés, écoles - qui agglomèrent les différents acteurs : industriels, professionnels et amateurs. Grâce à ces organes de référence communs, c'est un véritable champ uni et autonome qui émerge. La photographie n'est plus considérée selon l'utilisation propagandiste des années trente quarante, ou la dépendance qu'elle pourrait nourrir vis-à-vis des beaux- arts. Car c'est bien sur les spécificités du médium que se construit le développement du champ photographique dans ces années. Se situant à la jonction des trois pôles quiparcourent la société de la jeune RFA - industrie de pointe, loisirs et culture --, la photographie devient le miroir à petit échelle de ces « longues années cinquante ». L'Allemagne retrouve son rôle-phare sur la scène photographique internationale. La présente étude s'est attachée aux théories - "fotoform", "Subjektive Fotograjie", "Totale Photographie" - et développements esthétiques des photographes professionnels - Otto Steinert ou Chargesheimer -, mais aussi aux enjeux sociologique, économique et politique entourant ce projet, autour notamment d'Agfa et de la foire photokina.

La notion de moi idéal est introduite dans la théorie psychanalytique par Freud en 1914 dans pour introduire le narcissisme. Depuis elle est restée peu usitée. La thèse de l'instance idéale fondatrice vise à démontrer que cette notion est fondamentale dans le cadre d'une approche psychanalytique des pathologies narcissiques. Elle prend appui pour sa démonstration, dans une première partie sur une analyse des travaux théoriques traitant de la notion de moi idéal de Freud à Françoise Dolto en analysant notamment en détail les travaux de Viktor Tausk, Herman Nunberg. Daniel Lagache et Jacques Lacan ainsi que les élaborations anglo-saxonnes de Heinz Kohut, Otto Kernberg et Annie Reich. Cette partie commence par une analyse de la relation transférentielle Freud Jung afin de souligner le fait que la théorie du narcissisme de Freud est produite dans un contexte clinique transférentiel ou il est confronté à la pathologie narcissique de Jung. Aussi bien, la recherche théorique s'appuiera-t-elle des lors sur les développements de Lagache. Lacan et Dolto qui ont permis de dépasser les impasses de Freud. La théorie lacanienne de l'imaginaire, jusque dans ces dernières avancées, devient de ce fait le support de cette thèse. La seconde partie est consacrée a l'expose de sept cas cliniques d'adultes et d'enfants que l'auteur a rencontré lors de psychothérapies. Ce matériel clinique met en évidence la nécessite pour la thérapeute travaillant avec des pathologies narcissiques d'accepter d'être impliqué soi-même narcissiquement dans le transfert. La troisième et dernière partie est consacrée au développement de la théorie de l'instance idéale fondatrice : cette instance est postulée comme un premier nouage du réel pulsionnel du corps avec une dimension pré-imaginaire (pole moi-idéal) et une dimension présymbolique (pole idéal duThe concept of ideal ego has been introduced by Freud in the psychoanalytical theory in 1914 in zur einfuhrung der narzissmus. In order to demonstrate this affirmation, this research deals first with an analysis of the theoretical works that have been done on the subject from freud to Francoise Dolto. Analyzing attentively the works of Viktor Tausk. Hermann Numberg, Daniel Lagache and Jacques Lacan and some of Anglo-Saxons authors such as Heinz Kohut, Otto Kernberg and Annie Reich. A part of this first chapter shows how the transferential relationship between Freud and Jung was important in the context of the elaboration of the theory of narcissism because of Jung’s narcissics troubles. Then, this research is found upon Lacan's theory of "imaginaire" which enables a better understanding of the narcissism. The second part of the research is based upon seven clinical studies of adults and children that have been reported through their therapies. Their analyses put the light on the fact that each psychoanalyst confronted with narcissics troubles should accept to be involved narcissically himself in the cure. The last part deals with the theory of the ideal founder agency : it postulates a knot (cf. Lacan) including instincts with a "pre-imaginaire" surface (ideal ego) and with a pre-symbolical materiel (ego ideal). The description of the agency through two poles-ideal ego and ego idealenables a coordination of the dynamics and the economics in that structure and gives the psychoanalyst a new way of thinking the pre-oedipian building of the ego. Consequently this concept provides a new psychoanalytical approach of narcissics troubles

La thèse se propose d'explorer les rapports entre utopie et littérature chez deux auteurs majeurs du XXe siècle italien, Elio Vittorini (1908-1966) et Italo Calvino (1923-1985), prenant en considération un large pan de leurs œuvres et de leur travail d'écrivain. À travers ce parcours, c'est une petite parabole de l'utopisme littéraire dans le second XXe siècle italien que l'on cherche à tracer, en partant des années quarante, où le travail littéraire était fonction d'un engagement politique externe, pour arriver, à travers une série de déconvenues politiques et de transformations sociales, à une tentative de redéfinition des fonctions politiques de la littérature qui nous mène jusqu'aux années soixante-dix. La trentaine d'années parcourue dans cette thèse est en effet riche en évolutions, du détachement des écrivains du Parti communiste, au passage à une nouvelle phase " néocapitaliste " dont l'Italie sort considérablement transformée. Nous nous trouvons donc à l'articulation entre deux périodes, moderne et postmoderne, dans une transition qui correspond aussi à une crise et à une remise en question de l'utopie, à travers les notions de progrès, de perfectibilité, de téléologie et de totalité qui lui étaient liées. Notre recherche cherche à cerner ces évolutions et leurs retombées sur le travail littéraire de nos écrivains - travail d'écriture bien sûr, mais aussi travail critique et théorique sur la définition de la littérature et ses fonctions. Cependant, elle évolue également sur un second plan : celui d'une définition des modèles utopiques en littérature, les œuvres dont nous nous occupons mettant en place, dans leurs rapports plus ou moins lointains au genre utopique, un certain type d'utopisme littéraire. Après une partie d'introduction théorique se concentrant sur les définitions possibles de l'utopie, nous partons donc de Vittorini et de l' " utopisme culturel " des années du Politecnico, revue animée par l'auteur entre 1945 et 1947, chapitre auquel répond l'analyse des œuvres Conversazione in Sicilia (Conversation en Sicile, 1941) et Le città del mondo (Les Villes du monde, 1951-1956). Une longue étude est ensuite consacrée au Menabò, revue dirigée par les deux auteurs entre 1959 et 1966, au cœur d'une crise poétique, politique, épistémologique dont la revue se fait l'écho. Sont parcourues en miroir deux " œuvres de la crise ", Le donne di Messina (Les Femmes de Messine, 1964) de Vittorini et La giornata d'uno scrutatore (La Journée d'un scrutateur, 1963) de Calvino. Une dernière partie se concentre sur le Calvino " utopiste " des années parisiennes, de sa passion pour Fourier à sa formulation de l' " utopia pulviscolare ", une utopie pulvérisée, spatialisée, anti-téléologique, dont les Città invisibili (Les Villes invisibles, 1972) sont la mise en forme littéraire, constituant le point d'arrivée de notre parcours.

Cette recherche porte sur l’empreinte de l'extraction d'uranium et de l'armement militaire nucléaire dans la région des Four Corners aux États-Unis. Confrontant récit muséal et enquête de terrain, elle tend à démontrer comment la propagande infuse la narration historique et invisibilise certaines réalités irradiées. Elle questionnera également le nucléaire comme paroxysme du paradigme techno-capitaliste et comme réinvestissement de la figure du pionnier. Nous étudierons aussi Les résurgences nucléaires dans d’autres domaines comme le Land Art et le cinéma. Cette étude démontrera enfin comment les États-Unis sont un incubateur du colonialisme nucléaire. En opposition à ce regard colonial, le désert sera présenté non pas comme une zone aride et stérile, mais comme un écosystème fourmillant afin d’envisager une représentation en résistanceThis research focuses on the footprint of uranium mining and nuclear military weaponry in the Four Corners area in the United States. Confronting museum narratives and field surveys, it aims to demonstrate how propaganda infuses the historical narrative and invisibilizes certain irradiated realities. It also examines nuclear power as a paroxysm of the techno-capitalist paradigm and as a reinvestment in the pioneer figure. It will also examine nuclear resurgences in other fields, such as Land Art and cinema. Finally, this study will show how the United States is an incubator of nuclear colonialism. La présente étude vise à appréhender en trois temps la public diplomacy des Etats-Unis, objet civilisationnel protéiforme. Notre premier chapitre a pour objectif la constitution d’un appareil théorique permettant de comprendre le fonctionnement de la projection d’une image extraterritoriale des Etats-Unis. La multiplicité d’acteurs, d’auteurs et de prescripteurs façonnant la public diplomacy américaine nécessite d’en dresser une taxonomie. Par ailleurs, les nombreux prismes disciplinaires par lesquels la public diplomacy est décrite font amplement varier son signifié. Pour donner du sens à cet ensemble hétérogène, nous choisissons d’étudier la public diplomacy des Etats-Unis sous l’angle de la propagande. Notre second chapitre est une étude pratique. Celle-ci révèle que la littérature consacrée à la public diplomacy est de nature quasi hagiographique. Présentée comme vertueuse par ses acteurs, la réalité est tout autre. Quatre cas d’étude – la « campagne de vérité » sous Truman, la « guerre du Vietnam » sous Johnson, l’Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean sous Reagan, ainsi que la « guerre contre la terreur » sous Bush fils – montrent que sa praxis est en contradiction avec sa rhétorique. Lors de l’ultime chapitre, on s’interrogera sur les différences entre effets annoncés et effets constatés. Cet effet fait-il des chercheurs en Etudes américaines des propagandistes à leur insu ?This three-part dissertation considers U.S. public diplomacy as a protean American Studies object. Part one is the creation of a theoretical apparatus to assist readers in their comprehension of how America projects its image abroad. The (too) many actors, authors and policy-makers involved in the shaping of American public diplomacy require the creation of a taxonomy. What is more, depending on academic focus, the meaning of public diplomacy varies. To make sense of this heterogeneous set, we choose to use propaganda as the master signifier tying together the different facets of public diplomacy. Part two is a practical study. Quasi hagiographic literature massages the reader into believing public diplomacy is of a virtuous nature. Yet four case studies (Truman’s Campaign of truth, Johnson’s Vietnam War, Reagan’s Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean and Bush 43’s so-called “War on Terror”) reveal the width of the gap that separates rhetoric from practice. Part three ponders the difference between supposed and real effects of American public diplomacy. Its most tangible achievement being the creation of a network of influential people and institutions to relay the American message abroad, one may wonder whether American Studies specialists unknowingly become propagandists themselves

Na continuação desse espírito transdisciplinar, o presente projeto de Doutoramento teórico-prático em Belas Artes cruza a investigação sobre o discurso pós-colonial, a História e Teoria de Arte, a Etnografia com o discurso artístico pessoal analisado ao longo do percurso de 23 anos de prática artística. Na sua componente mais teórica demonstra-se como o discurso artístico se insere no discurso pós-colonial e como estes dois se complementam e se validam mutuamente. Paralelamente, cria-se uma obra de arte inédita que se pode integrar no campo expandido da escultura – A Tendency to Forget (2015) – e resulta de um processo investigativo sobre dois edifícios arquitetónicos com ligações à obra do casal de etnógrafos Jorge e Margot Dias. Dá-se particular atenção aos filmes etnográficos feitos por Margot Dias durante as campanhas etnográficas dirigidas pelo seu marido no norte de Moçambique nos finais dos anos 1950, que aqui funcionam como mote simbólico de uma problemática mais alargada, focando a chegada tardia e relativa fragilidade do discurso pós-colonial em Portugal e realçando a questão do apagamento da história colonial. Questiona-se ainda a relação comprometedora entre a ciência e a política colonial do Estado Novo. Assumiu-se a necessidade de reflexividade do discurso pós-colonial decorrente do seu enfraquecimento e da sua incapacidade em criar sociedades mais humanistas e pondera-se a possibilidade do seu esgotamento. Todavia, identifica-se a tendência de viragem no discurso e os contornos teóricos que possam definir as diferenças do atual momento, apelidado de após pós-colonial. Confirma-se, assim, a sua pertinência no contexto português e identifica-se mesmo uma necessidade de aprofundar a crítica. Em concordância com estas conclusões imbui-se a nova escultura de uma visualidade crítica mais incisiva.
The post-colonial discourse deals with the effects of colonization on cultures and societies. It is a transdisciplinary area of study which fuses knowledge from a number of research areas including the Social Sciences, History of Art, Anthropology, Sociology, Journalism, Media Studies, Feminism and Gender Studies. In the spirit of this transdisciplinary approach the following theoretical and practical doctoral project in Fine Arts weaves post-colonial, Art History and Ethnographic research with an analysis of personal artistic discourse over a 23 year period. In the theoretical component we show how the artistic discourse is inserted within the post-colonial discourse and how the two complement and validate each other. At the same time we created an original work of art in the expanded field of sculpture – A Tendency to Forget (2015) – the result of a research process focusing on two buildings and their connections to the work of the ethnographic couple Jorge and Margot Dias. We place a special focus on the ethnographic films created by Margot Dias during a number of ethnographic expeditions directed by her husband in the north of Mozambique. These films serve as a symbolic motif for a larger concern, the late arrival and relative fragility of the post-colonial discourse in Portugal and the negation of colonial history. We also question the compromised relationship between science and colonial politics during the Estado Novo period. We practiced reflexivity within the post-colonial discourse by anticipating its loss of potency and its inability to deliver more humanist societies and contemplate the possible demise of the discourse. We identified new turns in the discourse which together outline an emerging field of practice which we refer to as after post-colonialism. We confirm its pertinence for the Portuguese context and highlight the necessity for further strengthening of critical practice. In tune with these conclusions the new sculpture reflects a more incisive and critical visuality.

Abstract The close relationship between domatia-bearing plants and certain ants has long held the attention of naturalists and raised questions about the nature and origin of such interactions (Belt 1874; Muller 1876; Ule 1906; Spruce 1908; Bequaert 1922; Wheeler 1942; recent reviews in Benson 1985; Huxley 1986; Jolivet 1986 ). Tropical arboreal ants of the subfamily Pseudomyrmecinae are especially prone to involvement in intimate associations with plants, and their behaviour in defence of the plant is often quite apparent, at least to sting-vulnerable observers. Indeed, studies on pseudomyrmecines inhabiting swollen-thorn acacias in Central America and Barteria (Passifloraceae) in Africa have provided some of the best evidence of the mutualistic nature of such ant-plant interactions (Janzen 1966, 1972).

Abstract John Bardeen (1908-91) won two Nobel Prizes in physics—in 1956 and again in 1972. He was a large, serene man with a diffident manner and a soft voice. To the students who attended his lectures at the University of Illinois he was Whispering John. He shared his first Nobel Prize with two colleagues at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, one of them his lifelong friend, Walter Brattain, the other the head of the section, William Shockley. Bardeen, who had absorbed quantum mechanics during his days as a research student at Princeton, realized, when contemplating the behaviour of a semiconductor, that an electric current would undergo a disturbance at the interface between two microscopic crystalline regions. (A semiconductor has a conductivity for electricity between those of a conductor, such as a metal, and an insulator.) Such interfaces occur in crystals that contain impurities, and Bardeen’s theoretical analysis showed how the current density (the concentration of electrons) would change in this region. The result of this theory, and of the experiments guided by it, was the transistor.

Abstract Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) studied philosophy at L’Ecole Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne. Like many other intellectuals of the time, she taught in a lycée. Influenced by Husserl and Heidegger, she wrote a phenomenological study of the experience of radical freedom (The Ethics of Ambiguity, 1949). She preferred to express her philosophical views in works of fiction: She Came to Stay (1943), All Men Are Mortal (1946), and The Mandarins (1954). Active in the Resistance, she wrote political essays, increasingly turning her attention to feminist theory. Her groundbreaking The Second Sex (1949) influenced feminist thinking around the world. She later turned to writing autobiography, using her life as an example of the complex situation of politically active intellectual women who are also fully engaged daughters and lovers (Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, 1958; The Prime of Life, 1960; The Force of Circumstance, 1963). Reflecting on the death of her mother, she began to write about ageing: The Coming of Age (1970) and All Said and Done (1972). She continued to write political essays, many of them severely critical of the United States (America Day by Day, 1948).

This scientific paper examines how the Dutch architects Jacoba Froukje Pot-Keegstra (1908-1997) and her husband Johan Willem Hindrik Cornelis Pot (1909-1972) designed for older people. In the decades following World War II, with the advent of the welfare state, care for older people became a priority of new social policy in the Netherlands. In 1956, the state pensions were launched (Algemene Ouderdomswet), and in 1963, the Dutch Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning (Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening) introduced the Older People’s Homes Act (Wet op de Bejaardenoorden). At the time, there was a growing demand for housing for older people, and this aimed to facilitate their large-scale production while meeting the highest possible standards. Through some of their most significant projects, this paper explores the aspects that Pot & Pot-Keegstra added to the design of collective housing to make life more convenient for old people beyond the “Regulations and Guidelines” (Voorschriften en Wenken) introduced in 1965. The methodology of this paper consists mainly of archival research in the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, a review of scientific and non-scientific literature, and plan analysis. It is worth noting that Pot-Keegstra was the first female architect by the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam in 1936, and she was one of the very first women to run an office with her husband. Among the analysed projects designed by Pot & Pot-Keegstra for older people is the first high-rise nursing home, the Osdorperhof in Amsterdam (1962-1968). The General Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses adopted in 1968 (Algemene Wet Bijzondere Ziektekosten) made the proliferation of nursing homes possible. The Osdorperhof, with medically oriented care, was a forerunner of the nursing home boom that began in the late 1960s. The design of this project facilitated a new way of taking care of older people, as this collective housing enabled them to live relatively independently and to have the care they needed.

For more than a century Gournia has been one of the key sites for understanding Minoan urbanism. Excavations by Harriet Boyd Hawes (1901–4), Jeffrey Soles and Costis Davaras (1971, 1972, and 1979), an intensive archaeology survey by Costis Davaras and L. Vance Watrous (1992–4), cleaning operations by Watrous near the shore (2008 and 2009), and the current Gournia Excavation Project (hereafter GEP) also directed by Watrous (2010–present) have resulted in one of the most extensively explored Bronze Age towns in the Eastern Mediterranean (Hall 1912; Boyd Hawes et al. 1908; Watrous et al. 2012; Watrous et al. 2015). By the end of the Neopalatial period the excavated section of the town covered some 1.68 ha, consisting of a number of interdependent components, including approximately sixty-four houses, a small palace, harbour facilities, a 500 m2 plateia, and a cobblestone street system with a total length of more than half a kilometre (Gomrée 2013: 850). When we began our work with the GEP we assumed that we would simply add the new excavations to the existing plan by Boyd. However, we quickly discovered it was not possible to make the old plan fit with our new survey points. Moreover as we looked more closely at the old plan we discovered a number of other problems. We noticed that walls, rooms, and even entire buildings had been omitted. In addition, the straight lines of the earlier plan had the effect of regularizing the architecture and masked the chronological complexity of the site. We decided, therefore, to make a new GIS-based plan of the entire site. When combined with excavation data, our new architectural analysis provides a rich dataset, which is useful for both interisland and cross-cultural comparisons of urban development and change. This dataset also provides us with the opportunity to examine how the various components of the town interacted from the time of its foundation in the Early Minoan period through to its final use in the Late Minoan III period.
