The symposium 'Public graphics: visual information for everyday use' (at Lunteren, The Netherlands, 26-30 September 1994 ) was organized by Harm Zwaga and Henriëtte . Hoonhout of Utrecht University's Department of Psychonomics, and Theo Boersema and Wim Nijhuis of the Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Talks were in seven sessions: User instructions, Warnings; Forms; Practical and theoretical approaches to information presentation; Maps and plans; Wayfinding, signs, and sign systems; and Graphic symbols. The symposium's Proceedings are now out of print, but the editors plan a book, and abstracts of the 26 talks appear on pages 72-82. So these notes arise mainly from the discussions which weaved between the speakers' talks. Some participants later sent me their informal reflections and answered questions; for letting me quote from these, my thanks to Austin Adams, Theo Boersema, Fred Brigham, Bob Dewar, Janice Leong, Romedi Passini, Peter Simlinger, and Pat Wright (whose observations appear separately on page 82).

It seems the best projects begin with a simple conversation, an idea mentioned in passing. For me and Erin Iannacchione, this is exactly how Family Story Time started. In 2012, I approached Erin about marketing public library summer reading programs to the families and young children at the LGBT Center of Raleigh Library only to find out they didn’t have any offerings for families and children. Soon I was planning our very first storytime.

I work three days a week for the North York Public Library Board: one day at the Central Library’s Literature and Fine Arts Department, and two at the York Woods Library, a regional branch with high immigrant use. As a part-time librarian and as an artist focussing on the more traditional aspects of art, drawing and painting, I usually leave library thoughts at the library door. If anything, it’s the patrons themselves who have inspired my art. However, the Fine Arts collection at the Central Library provides me with resource materials to observe and connect what artists in the past have done to what I seek to do now.

In 1993, I was newly matriculated into a Master’s of Library Science program at Pratt Institute School of Information and Library Science. I was employed as a Librarian Trainee II with the Brooklyn Public Library, posted to the Park Slope Branch, in a then mixed-class neighborhood. But I had a dark secret. I couldn’t write. To be clear: the thought of college essays and research papers nauseated me. How was I going to get through graduate school? I barely made it through my undergraduate classes by creatively providing and producing alternative assessment products (anything except turning in a research paper). I was the master at avoiding addressing my writing anxiety.

Censorship has been an ongoing phenomenon even in "the land of the free." This examination of banned books across U.S. history examines the motivations and effects of censorship, shows us how our view of right and wrong has evolved over the years, and helps readers to understand the tremendous importance of books and films in our society. Books ranging from classics such as A Farewell to Arms, Lord of the Rings, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Color Purple as well as best-selling books such as Are You There, God? It's Me Margaret, titles in the Harry Potter series, and various books by bestselling novelist Stephen King have all been on the banned books list. What was the content that got them banned, who wanted them banned, and did the ban have the desired effect of minimizing the number of people who read the title―or did it have the opposite effect, inadvertently creating an even larger readership for the book? Silenced in the Library: Banned Books in America provides a comprehensive examination of the challenges to major books as well as the final results of these selections being deemed "unfit for public consumption." Included in its discussion are explanations of the true nature of the objections along with the motives of the authors, publishers, and major proponents of the books. Content is organized based on why the books were banned, such as sexual content, drug use, or religious objections. This approach helps readers to see trends in how people have approached the challenge of evaluating what is "proper" and shows how our societal consensus of what is acceptable has evolved over the years. Readers will come away with a fuller appreciation of the immense power of words on a page―or an eReader device―to inflame and outrage, influence opinion, incite thought, and even change the course of history.

This chapter examines how the self-reflexive techniques employed in her writing work to facilitate instances of gendered social critique, while also interrogating the wider functioning of power and personal identity in the increasingly mediatised postmodern consumer culture in which they were written. The chapter focuses predominantly on three of Spark’s most formally and thematically experimental works: 1962’s seldom-discussed stage play, Doctors of Philosophy, 1968’s slight and sparsely detailed The Public Image, and the elaborately metafictional satire of celebrity and press sensationalism, Not to Disturb, published in 1971. Also discussed here is ‘A Dangerous Situation on the Stairs’ (c.1960), an unpublished short story that encountered in the author’s archive in the McFarlin Library in Tulsa. In each case, Spark’s literary innovations are read alongside her longstanding preoccupation with the tensions that exist between private selves and public performances – with bodies nearly inscribed within oppressive cultural narratives (and those deemed to be deviant for daring to exist outside of them), and with the sinister, violent negation of female subjectivity.

Abstract Since it is first and foremost the cinema that enables—or at least facilitates—concentrated and focused film experiences, this article makes a strong plea for the ongoing importance of the movie theater as a vital cultural practice and social institution. Although we better engage some films privately and alone at home, we do better to watch other films in the public space of the cinema and in the company of others. The latter is especially the case for challenging modernist art films, slow cinema, avant-garde films, and the like. Among the phenomena that make me think so is “joint deep attention.” Due to its spatial and technological features, the cinema allows us to follow more challenging films with deep attention, in part because of the co-presence of other viewers: Their deep attention can contagiously rub off on ours and help us keep focused. Tentative evidence for the contagious joint-deep-attention effect of the cinema exists in empirical studies dealing with analogous experiences: studying in a library and collectively meditating in a meditation retreat. But apart from the social aspect of the movie theater, three further characteristics of the cinema dispositive contribute, at least implicitly, to the joint-deep-attention effect, characteristics hardly available when we watch a DVD or stream a film at home: its nonmundane space, the impossibility of manipulating the film, and the silence of the auditorium. The chapter revisits—and positively reevaluates—these features as forms of freedom: from the everyday, from having to act, and from noise.

This chapter describes some aspects of the development of VICNET, an assemblage of computers, cables, modems, people, texts, libraries, buildings, dreams and images. It is a system that is difficult to characterise, it is dynamic both in geographical and ontological scope, size and usage. I have attempted to capture some of its nature through the use of several vignettes that may give the reader a small insight into parts of its being, then using some of the techniques and explanatory and exploratory mechanisms available from the field of science studies such as heterogeneous engineering and Actor Network Theory (ANT), I reveal some of the ways that VICNET came into existence. Many computer systems are undergoing continual evolution and it is extremely difficult to discern their configuration and what objects have agency at any given point in time; they can be thought of as open systems as described by Hewitt and de Jong (1984). VICNET, an Internet information provider established in 1994 as a joint venture between the State Library of Victoria and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, is one such system; it is being used by a large number of people and public libraries, yet simultaneously it is evolving and being shaped by the technology, the users and the environment of which it is part. Consider the system, VICNET as it is called, as a node of a much larger network. I have attempted to unfold this node to reveal the social and technical worlds contained therein, but I also fold the VICNET node in itself so that it becomes part of a much larger sociotechnical system – the Internet. This process of folding I refer to as a topological transformation and it is by studying transformations of this type that may help us understand how open systems come into being and evolve. In what follows, I provide a brief background to VICNET and the data collection method I used. Next, I discuss some the analytical techniques that are available for those who wish to study the development of technological systems. Following this all-too-brief comment I then present a selection of vignettes that show the varied nature of this socio-technical system. Presenting these then allows me to develop further the idea of social topologies introduced in the section on analytical techniques. In the final section there is some discussion as to why this way of looking at socio-technical systems may be useful.

This study, titled “Women and Emerging Jurisprudential Problems,” starts with a fundamentalist, purposeful reading, based on the postulates of the importance of women, their role in life, their participation in society and their interaction with its issues. The tangible, tangible, and the moral, by working to preserve its cohesion, spread religious awareness, and spread human values and principles that are fully compatible with what came with the Islamic Sharia. It is guaranteed over time. On the other hand, clarifying the interaction of women in public issues and their contributions to the intellectual arena, enriching them, and liberating sayings and opinions while preoccupying themselves with the sciences of narration and know-how. One of the most important reasons that prompted me to write in this study is the growing doctrinal problems related to women directly and to the family, of which women are the cornerstone. Likewise, the Islamic library must be provided with studies that reveal the treasures of Sharia and the jurisprudential capacity capable of controlling reality and applying rulings on reality. The idea on which the study is based is an attempt to answer questions that represent a problem for researchers, and may even disturb orientalists, such as the main question: What is the correct legal view of women? And it branches off from it: What are the purposes of rulings that the West (and perhaps some Muslims) see as unfair and oppressive to women? What is the extent of women's interaction in the jurisprudential and intellectual arena since the inception of Islam until today? And how to deal with issues and balance in general and women in particular? Approach to study the subject: an inductive approach that follows the particles and attaches them to the general faculties of Sharia, then the analytical approach based on analyzing the information reached. The study plan has two axes: The first axis (the correct concept of the Islamic view of women) It contains two topics: 1- Islam honoring women as a vision of objectives. 2- Models for active women in their society. The second axis: (emerging problems related to women) There are two topics: 1- The role of women in spreading societal awareness keeping pace with the times. 2- Models of developments in the impact of technology.
