System engineering methods are often used to design complex systems like airplanes. However, this method is also useful to propose solutions to redesign logistics systems such as warehouses and transport systems. This paper will apply system engineering in analyzing the late order problem at a pesticide company, thereby surveying stakeholders needs for warehouse re-designing. The functional analysis in the warehouse will be carried out in the concept analysis section to propose warehouse’s layout redesign alternatives that based on the demand of storage capacity and throughput. The authors also used the AHP method to select the final design layout. The detailed design section builds the operation process for the warehouse as well as the codification for commodity storage slots along with these tables forms that support for warehouse management. These solutions increase warehouse performance as well as the utilization in warehouses when applied in practice. Therefore, the system engineering method should be used in warehouse’s redesign

Introduction. This article discusses the essence of compositions. The concept of automated management system of material and information flows is described. The main components of «smart» composition are identified. Its technological and technical aspects are analyzed. The advantages of the introduction of «smart» warehouse systems in the field of warehousing logistics are investigated.Problem Statement. Every year in Ukraine more than 30 million tons of goods are sold, and if we take into account that on the way the goods undergo up to 15–20 transshipments ― this figure exceeds 300 million tons. The range of goods sold in the service sector reaches 400 thousand items, and taking into account the types and varieties ― more than 1 million. This huge mass of goods before entering the trading floor is accepted, unloaded, assembled, prepared for sale, and so on. Execution of these logistic operations, improvement of all logistic process is impossible without existence of the corresponding warehouse network. To date, warehousing can not remain in this state, it has exhausted the reserves of improving the efficiency of its work. It is necessary to solve the problem of further development of warehousing at a qualitatively new level of organization and technical equipment.Purpose.Analyze the feasibility of implementing systems of smart warehouses to improve the efficiency of the logistics system.Materials and Methods.Much attention is paid to the question of the effective functioning of warehouses by domestic and foreign scientists such as Stoke J. R., Lambert D. M., Oklander M. A., Krykavsky E. V., Nikolaychuk P. V. and others. The lack of research in the field of implementation of smart warehouses and the need to determine the impact of new factors on the logistics process in the warehouse determines the relevance of the article.Results.After analyzing the technological and technical aspects used in «smart» warehouses, their characteristics were given, the advantages and disadvantages were indicated. Active development of information systems, new communications allow to change conditions of interaction of the enterprise with consumers. The modern warehouse complex, which has advanced technologies, allows to solve many problems related to the circulation of inventory.Conclusions. Properly organized warehouse allows you to optimize the costs of the logistics system, and the processes associated with the operation of warehouses, ultimately a significant component of total costs. Therefore, the introduction of a system of «reasonable» composition is appropriate. Keywords:warehouse, smart warehouse, logistics, warehouse management system, internet of things, information service, pick-to-light system, stock.

The current problem for managers in logistic and trading companies is the task of improving the operational business performance and developing the logistics support of sales. The development of logistics sales supposes development and implementation of a set of works for the development of the existing warehouse facilities, including both a detailed description of the work performed, and the timing of their implementation. Logistics engineering of warehouse complex includes such tasks as: determining the number and the types of technological zones, calculation of the required number of loading-unloading places, development of storage structures, development and pre-sales preparation zones, development of specifications of storage types, selection of loading-unloading equipment, detailed planning of warehouse logistics system, creation of architectural-planning decisions, selection of information-processing equipment, etc. The currently used ERP and WMS systems did not allow us to solve the full list of logistics engineering problems. In this regard, the development of specialized software products, taking into account the specifics of warehouse logistics, and subsequent integration of these software with ERP and WMS systems seems to be a current task. In this paper we suggest a system of statistical analysis of logistics information, designed to meet the challenges of logistics engineering and planning. The system is based on the methods of statistical data processing. The proposed specialized software is designed to improve the efficiency of the operating business and the development of logistics support of sales. The system is based on the methods of statistical data processing, the methods of assessment and prediction of logistics performance, the methods for the determination and calculation of the data required for registration, storage and processing of metal products, as well as the methods for planning the reconstruction and development of the existing warehouses. The results of approbation of software for the logistics of designing large warehouses of metal trading companies are given.

Purpose Recent literature recognizes the role of warehouses in enhancing the overall logistics performance. Thus, lean thinking has recently found its way in supporting warehouse and distribution centre operations. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among warehouse waste reduction practices, warehouse operational performance, distribution performance and business performance. Design/methodology/approach A two-stage study was conducted. First, a Delphi technique was adopted to develop a relevant questionnaire. Second, this questionnaire was used to measure the degree of waste reduction in the different warehouse activities and to test the developed research hypotheses. The authors test the hypotheses with a sample of Middle Eastern warehouse operators. Findings There exists a positive relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and both warehouse operational performance and distribution performance. There was no direct relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and business performance. However, results revealed that the relationship between warehouse waste reduction level and business performance was mediated by warehouse operational performance and distribution performance. Practical implications The developed instrument provides a guide for logistics managers as to understand how to reduce waste in each warehousing activity. The results also inform logistics managers of how distribution performance can be improved through lean warehousing. The resulting performance improvements in the distribution operations will ultimately be reflected in the logistics performance of downstream retailers. Originality/value The study develops an original instrument for measuring waste reduction in warehouses, and provides insights into the evolving lean warehousing research area. This is the first scholarly work to uncover the relationships among warehouse waste reduction practices, warehouse operational performance, distribution performance and business performance.

This paper presents a structural microeconomic model of the choice of warehouse location in urban logistics. The model is theoretical and analytical. It brings the focus on operational constraints, their diversity, and their influence on costs. The location decision is modeled as a trade-off between land rents (making it costly to locate close to the center of the urban area) and transport costs (which increase non-linearly when the warehouse moves away from the city center). The influence of various parameters on the optimal warehouse location is analyzed. The following conclusions are drawn. First, increased demand contributes to the explanation of logistic sprawl: when the density of operations (pick-ups and deliveries) increases in a given area, transport is more efficient, making it less necessary for warehouses to be close to the city center. Second, urban logistics is a heterogenous sector and, depending on the operational constraints, will not react homogenously to changes in economic parameters or the implementation of public policies. Third, economies of scale are identified: some implications are discussed. Fourth, the paper briefly discusses how land-use planning regarding, in particular, warehouses, can help internalize some of the externalities of urban logistics.

In modern conditions of integration of Ukraine’s economy into the world community effective functioning of enterprises is impossible without improving the organization of logistics processes. Dynamic development of economic relations leads to a significant increase in the needs of enterprises in warehouses. Warehousing problems arise and are solved at all stages of the movement of goods and material flow. Warehouses are one of the most important elements of the logistics system, however, the domestic food industry is not carefully studied, as well as issues of optimization of warehousing, which necessitates a more detailed study of this issue. The dynamic development of various sectors of the economy causes a number of problems associated with the formation of warehousing of an individual enterprise. It is expedient for small and medium-sized enterprises to organize their own warehousing facilities, and large ones to transfer warehousing functions to logistics companies. The largest Ukrainian logistics companies offer warehouses for rent, take goods for safekeeping without the right to manage goods flows, and also perform a full range of logistics services (purchase / storage / distribution with the right to manage). In the first and second case, the application of logistics principles significantly reduces the costs of the enterprise associated with the organization of warehousing processes. However, the specialized literature does not sufficiently reflect and describe the processes of warehouse formation and functioning as an element of logistics. In the Ukrainian economic literature at present there is no consensus on the development and formation of warehousing on the basis of logistical principles. Introduction: Improving efficiency through the supply chain has long been strived for by management. Traditional approaches focus on improving efficiency in the supply chain through optimization of a company’s internal activities, where warehouses play an important role. Companies are therefore dealing with the dilemma of how to increase efficiency in their warehouse, yet at the same time reduce operational costs. Current research focuses on strategies to increase efficiency in conventional warehouses by studying design, operations, and planning. Digitalization and lean warehousing are also emerging as important tools for warehouse efficiency. However, alternative warehouse types exist that are less researched. The research aimed therefore to investigate the challenges warehouses with stock point design face.   Methods: A qualitative and deductive case study approach was chosen. A literature review was first conducted to find the variables defining warehouse efficiency. Interviews and observations were then performed at the case company to investigate how the variables affect efficiency at the case company. Lastly, the theoretical framework was compared to the findings to find strategies to overcome the challenges.  Findings: Efficiency problems can be found in many aspects of the case company´s warehouse. Over time the warehouse has lost its structure, where a lot of reliability for warehouse procedures are placed on the employees and their knowledge about the company and all parts. Because of missing routines for reviewing parts data, changes in generations and parts being revised, are hard to keep track of which causes an effect on efficiency. It also increases the risk of deadstock.  Conclusions: In previous research, few studies could be found where researchers tackle the problems that multiple storage building causes on efficiency. By concluding that seven key variables define warehouse efficiency from previous research and applying them to a warehouse with stock point design, the challenges that an alternative warehouse face through the important variables in warehouse efficiency research could be explained.  All the variables affect efficiency, yet warehouse design has the biggest impact. Because of limited abilities with hand scanners and missing routines for reviewing parts data, operations, movement, and planning can also be concluded to have a high influence on efficiency.  To overcome the challenges, strategies for class-based storage assignment should be applied from the perspective of the storage building limitations. Right conditions for batching and good routines for warehouse procedures and reviewing parts data are also suggested as strategies.

“Property owners who start to understand the new demands from the e--‐commerce companies and start handling the risks it implies can probably have a lot to win.” Johan Franzén, Catena The e--‐commerce sector is growing rapidly as a result of the current digitalization, changing the society's day--‐to--‐day consuming patterns. E--‐commerce companies have a unique set of  characteristics, creating new demands within the warehouse and logistics segment in the leasing market. Leases with durations between 10--‐15 years have traditionally been  common for warehouse and logistics properties. However the current trend is towards lease agreements with shorter lease duration. This report intends to analyze how the e--‐ commerce expansion affects the warehouse and logistics market, and to  determine if the statement regarding if there is a gap between different players in the market holds. The selection of participants in the study consists of e--‐ commerce companies, property owners and third--‐party logistics companies. In addition to this, interviews have been held with a variety of property consultants as well as with a professor in retail and logistics. Using a Qualitative method, the aim to examine the different market participants’ views and perceptions on the subject. The result of the study clearly shows there is an asymmetry between the different participants active within the segment.  The e--‐commerce companies demand lease agreements with shorter lease duration, whilst the property owners prefer longer lease durations in order to decrease the risk. Furthermore, shorter lease duration affects the transaction market and property value considerably. The demand for city logistics is increasing and the demand for central warehousing will remain. Finally,  it becomes more common with automation in the warehouse and logistics  space.

This report is a part of a larger project with the aim of developing a proof-of-concept prototype. The project was started on the initiative of Company X and is a collaboration between them and the University of Borås. Company X are a logistics consultant firm specialized in warehousing operations. Through this project Company X hope to strengthen their standing on the market and offer their customers new and innovative solutions. The purpose of this project is to, with the assistance of AI, calculate in what cluster within a warehouse a product should be placed in order to create more efficient picking routes and to research the market in order to evaluate the business potential for this kind of service. This specific report aims to conduct a market analysis for the potential service. It will do so by conducting interviews and creating a theoretical framework consisting of relevant literature. When performing the market research and analysis of the potential IT-service there are a few limitations caused by a number of factors that could potentially affect the significance of the end result. The service is not yet developed and cannot be described in detail but only as an idea, which could make it difficult for the interview respondents to fully understand the service. The report will also be limited for certain practical reasons such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of this, the report has not had the opportunity to conduct the interviews with potential customers on site but have been conducted online, via link. The theoretical framework has two different main focus areas. The first area addresses basic warehouse logistics and difficulties in selling high technology products, while the second area includes marketing strategies and strategic marketing planning. The market analysis will consist of a SWOT-analysis and an STP-analysis. The report has concluded that the service has potential and suggests that company type B is the best suited potential customer. Personal and demand driven sales are also considered helpful factors when selling high-tech products and solutions.

Logistics makes extensive use of human and material resources to achieve a target level of customer service at the lowest possible cost. It has been recognized as a major key to success in commerce and industry, and continues to evolve radically and grow in importance in recent years. Warehousing, as one of the most costly elements of logistics, is often the central operation in most logistics networks. Its successful management is critical in terms of both cost and service. In this thesis, two problem areas in warehouse logistics are studied: stock loading and order picking. Stock loading is an essential operation in modern logistics. Improvement on container capacity utilization and loading efficiency significantly reduces costs. For a given set of boxes in different sizes and an unlimited number of identical containers, the basic cargo loading problem is to determine the minimum number of containers required. The problem is proven NP-hard. To tackle this problem, a Tabu search optimization with a tree-based cargo loading algorithm as its inner heuristic is proposed. This approach has flexibility in taking different box conditions into consideration, and can find better solutions on average than other recent meta- or heuristic algorithms. Decreasing order sizes and increasing fuel costs provide a strong incentive for the inner-city truck loading operation to utilize container space more efficiently in transporting goods to multiple clients during one trip. This considers not only traditional loading constraints, but also multi-drop requirements. A wallbuilding heuristics based on a binary tree data structure is proposed to handle these side constraints. A dynamic space decomposition approach, together with a repacking and space amalgamation strategy, permits an efficient and effective loading plan. Order picking, one of the most critical warehousing operations, is the second problem studied in this thesis. An analytical approximation model is proposed based on probability modeling and queueing network theory applied to a synchronized zone picker-to-part order picking system with different routing and ABC-class inventory storage policies. The numerical results are compared and validated via simulation. The resulting model can therefore be usefully applied in the design and selection process of order picking systems. The routing versus storage issues are further investigated with a simulation model. This extends the existing research by evaluating multiple routing and storage policies under varying operating conditions. Results show that the midpoint, return and traversal routing policies generally perform best when paired with perimeter, across-aisle and within-aisle storage strategies, respectively. Yet performance is indeed dependent on demand patterns, zone sizes, batch sizes and order sizes. At first glance, order picking and stock loading operation seem to pursue different objectives. However, they are two related operations conducted sequentially from internal to the outbound side of warehousing. An efficient order picking system is a precondition for an effective loading operation at the shipping dock, especially when multiple orders need to be selected for consolidation in shipment. The proposed loading algorithms and the order picking system performance evaluation models can be used to further study the effective integration of these two functions.

Cytiva is a global provider of technologies to global pharmaceutical companies and it is critical to ensure that Cytiva’s customers receive deliveries of products on-time. Cytiva’s products are shipped via road transportation within most parts of Europe and for the rest in the world air freight is used. The company is challenged to deliver products on time between regional distribution points and from manufacturing sites to its regional distribution centers. The time performance for the delivery of goods is today 79% compared to the company’s goal 95%. The goal of this work is to find the root causes and recommend improvement opportunities for the logistics organizations inbound in-transit time performance towards their target of 95% success rate of shipping in-transit times. Data for this work was collected from the company’s system to create visibility for the logistics specialists and to create a prediction that can be used for the warehouse in Rosersberg. Visibility was created by implementing various dashboards in the QlikSense program that can be used by the logistics group. The prediction models were built on Holt-Winters forecasting technique to be able to predict quantity, weight and volume of products, which arrive daily within five days and are enough to be implemented in the daily work. With the forecasting technique high accurate models were found for both the quantity and weight with accuracies of 96.02% and 92.23%, respectively. For the volume, however, too many outliers were replaced by the mean values and the accuracy of the model was 75.82%. However, large amounts of discrepancies have been found in the data which today has led to a large ongoing project to solve. This means that the models shown in this thesis cannot be completely reliable for the company to use when a lot of errors in their data have been found. The models may need to be adjusted when the quality of the data has increased. As of today the models can be used by having a glance upon.

Abstract: Spain is the EU country with the largest area of cultivated vineyards. However, it experiences a phenomenon of disaggregation and smallholdings, making it complicated for winegrowers to invest in technification. This paper describes an experiment that will be conducted in the Span- ish wine company Pago de Carraovejas. The experiment aims at optimising storage and decision-making when packaging for shipment by developing an Artificial Intelligence system. A module will be created for the improvement of the arrangement of products in the warehouse. This way, the efficiency of the warehous0e and productivity of the winery will increase.

With global megatrends like automation and digitization changing societies, economies, and ultimately businesses, shift is underway, disrupting current business plans and entire industries. Business actors have accordingly developed an instinctive fear of economic decline and realized the necessity of taking adequate measures to keep up with the times. Increasingly, organizations find themselves in an evolve-or-die race with their success depending on their capability of recognizing the requirements for serving a specific market and adopting those requirements accurately into their own structure. In the transportation and logistics sector, emerging technological and information challenges are reflected in fierce competition from within and outside. Especially, processes and supporting information systems are put to the test when technological innovation start to spread among an increasing number of actors and promise higher performance or lower cost. As to warehousing, technological innovation continuously finds its way into the premises of the heterogeneous warehouse operators, leading to modifications and process improvements. Such innovation can be at the side of the hardware equipment or in the form of new software solutions. Particularly, the fourth industrial revolution is globally underway. Same applies to Future Internet technologies, a European term for innovative software technologies and the research upon them. On the one hand, new hardware solutions using robotics, cyber-physical systems and sensors, and advanced materials are constantly put to widespread use. On the other one, software solutions based on intensified digitization including new and more heterogeneous sources of information, higher volumes of data, and increasing processing speed are also becoming an integral part of popular information systems for warehouses, particularly for warehouse management systems. With a rapidly and dynamically changing environment and new legal and business requirements towards processes in the warehouses and supporting information systems, new performance levels in terms of quality and cost of service are to be obtained. For this purpose, new expectations of the functionality of warehouse management systems need to be derived. While introducing wholly new solutions is one option, retrofitting and adapting existing systems to the new requirements is another one. The warehouse management systems will need to deal with more types of data from new and heterogeneous data sources. Also, it will need to connect to innovative machines and represent their respective operating principles. In both scenarios, systems need to satisfy the demand for new features in order to remain capable of processing information and acting and, thereby, to optimize logistics processes in real time. By taking a closer look at an industrial use case of a warehouse management system, opportunities of incorporating such new requirements are presented as the system adapts to new data types, increased processing speed, and new machines and equipment used in the warehouse. Eventually, the present paper proves the adaptability of existing warehouse management systems to the requirements of the new digital world, and viable methods to adopt the necessary renovation processes.

COVID-19 brought the public’s attention to the critical value of transportation and supply chain workers as lifelines to access food and other supplies. This report examines essential job skills required of the middle-skill workforce (workers with more than a high school degree, but less than a four-year college degree). Many of these middle-skill transportation and supply chain jobs are what the Federal Reserve Bank defines as “opportunity occupations” -- jobs that pay above median wages and can be accessible to those without a four-year college degree. This report lays out the complex landscape of selected technological disruptions of the supply chain to understand the new workforce needs of these middle-skill workers, followed by competencies identified by industry. With workplace social distancing policies, logistics organizations now rely heavily on data management and analysis for their operations. All rungs of employees, including warehouse workers and truck drivers, require digital skills to use mobile devices, sensors, and dashboards, among other applications. Workforce training requires a focus on data, problem solving, connectivity, and collaboration. Industry partners identified key workforce competencies required in digital literacy, data management, front/back office jobs, and in operations and maintenance. Education and training providers identified strategies to effectively develop workforce development programs. This report concludes with an exploration of the role of Institutes of Higher Education in delivering effective workforce education and training programs that reimagine how to frame programs to be customizable, easily accessible, and relevant.
