Abstract. When unloading grain harvester hoppers at standstill the time of emptying the hopper has a significant effect on the harvester productivity. The paper is about a conducted survey in 15 agricultural farms with 15 harvesters monitored including 14 models of 6 different brands during wheat harvesting. The time for emptying the grain hopper of the harvesters was defined by measuring the time. It was found that the actual time for emptying the hoppers of the studied harvesters was 134.85 s, and the actual flow rate of unloading of the screw in them being 69.63 L/s on average. A multivariate regression analysis was performed on the effect of the harvester grain hopper volume and the actual flow rate of the unloading screw on the time from switching on the unloading screw till its switching off in various grain harvesters. An adequate mathematical model of the effect of the hopper volume and the flow rate of the unloading screw of grain harvesters on the time for emptying the grain hopper under real production conditions has also been created. These results can also be used for minimizing costs in the technological process at harvesting.

The model of an actual 4070 m3 bell-less top blast furnace with two parallel hoppers was established, and the distribution of the sinter, pellet, and lump ore in the hopper and the stock surface was analyzed based on the discrete element method. The results show that the distribution of different types of ores is not uniform in the hopper already. In the radial direction of the stock surface, the sinter volume fraction in the center and peripheral region of the stock surface is higher than that in the intermediate region of the stock surface, but the volume distribution of the pellet and lump ore is opposite to the sinter volume distribution. Owing to the size of lump ore is small, so the pressure drop of burden layer in the intermediate region of the stock surface is larger than that in the center and peripheral region. In the circumferential direction of the stock surface, the standard deviation of the volume distribution of the sinter, pellet, and lump ore is 1.28, 0.92 and 0.49, respectively.

AbstractThe volume fraction, dissolution, and segregation of WC particles in metal-matrix composites (MMCs) are critical to their wear resistance. Low carbon steel substrates were precoated with NiCrBSi coatings and processed with gas tungsten arc melt injection method to fabricate MMCs with high volume fraction of WC particles. The microstructures and wear resistance of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the volume fraction of WC particles increased with decreasing hopper height and was as high as 44% when hopper height was 100 mm. The dissolution of WC particles was minimal. The content of the alloying elements decreased from the top to the bottom of the matrix. More WC particles dissolved in the overlapping area, where Fe3W3C carbide blocks could be found. The wear loss of the MMCs after 40 min was 6.9 mg, which is 76 times less than that of the substrate after the 4 min test.

The granular flow is one of the principal issues for the design of pebble bed reactors. Particularly, the clogging phenomenon raises an important issue for pebble bed reactors. In this paper, we conduct experiments and discrete particle simulation of two-dimensional discharge granular flow from a conical hopper, to study the effect of the particle bed height h and hopper angle α on the clogging phenomenon. In general, the clogging probability J increases with height h and starts to saturate when h is larger than a critical value. The experimental result trends are supported by discrete simulations. To understand the underlying physical mechanism, we conduct discrete particle simulations for various h values, focusing on the following parameters: the statistical averaging of the volume fraction, velocity, and contact pressure of particles near the aperture during the discharge. We found that, among all relevant variables, the contact pressure of particles is the main cause of the increasement of J when h increases. An exponential law between the pebble bed h and clogging probability J has been established based on these observations and Janssen model. As for hopper angle α , J shows an almost constant behavior for any rise in α followed by a sudden regression at α = 75 ° . Surprisingly, the effect of α is most obvious for intermediate values of h , where we observe a sharp increasement of clogging probability. The same trend is observed in the two-dimensional discrete simulation results.

The effect of elevated CO2 (570±25ppm) on the brown plant hopper (BPH) population, rice yield parameters, and efficacy of buprofezin (0.05%) in terms of spray volume was studied in an open top chamber (OTCs) during rainy season 2017 and 2018. The pest population was observed to be higher during 2017 compared to the rainy season of 2018. Under elevated CO2, rice plants had more vegetative tillers (18%) and reproductive tillers (22.1%), but there was a decrease in 1000-seed weight (11.2%), seed number per panicle (3.91%), and grain yield (18.8%) in comparison to ambient CO2 grown rice plants. The spray volumes of 700, 600, 500, and 400 l/ha each caused higher BPH mortality under ambient CO2 compared to elevated CO2. A spray volume of 500 l/ha did not prove as effective under elevated CO2 as under ambient CO2. Lower efficacy of spray volume of 500 l/ha under elevated CO2 could be ascribed to higher canopy size under elevated CO2 due to higher tillering. Increased crop canopy size under elevated CO2 may thus require higher spray volume to ensure proper coverage. Results of the study suggested a need to revise spray volume recommendations to facilitate effective management of BPH under climate change.

Granular dilatancy has been previously characterised through a simple linear relationship between the packing fraction and dimensionless shear rate. However, this relationship was developed for granular flows in a simple shear cell geometry. Here we examine inertial volume changes in a shear cell with gravity, a vertical chute, and a pseudo-2D hopper. In so doing, we show that the packing fraction displays both a local and non-local response, analogous to what is typically observed for the stress ratio µ.

By researching visual traditions of representing widows in relation to a social role, I explore how these may be related to processes of mourning and memory. My study begins with an historical reading and, along with an analysis of Renaissance widow portraiture, I trace the experiences of widows in the Cape of Good Hope. For the purposes of this thesis, I have selected images of widows to investigate memory-work particularly when speaking of loss. I re-view these memory processes through recent historical and art historical discourse with reference to contemporary South African artworks in order to understand how public memory is formed by way of visual documentation. These narratives around widowhood have informed the subject matter for my Master’s exhibition and shed light on my own experience as a widow. The interaction between objects and memory are of particular interest and manifest in my studio art practice.

The research focuses on the various methods that could be used in the laboratory to determine the values of production from a model cutter suction dredge. The values of production obtained from different methods are compared to estimate the best value. The tests were conducted in an attempt to pave the way to find spillage from the cutter suction dredge. The development of these methods is useful for evaluating the sediment spillage and residuals during dredging. The more accurate the values of production the more accurate would be the values of spillage. For this purpose, the laboratory dredge carriage and dredge/tow tank located at the Haynes Coastal Engineering Laboratory at Texas A&M University is used. During the summer of 2007 and 2008, the laboratory dredge carriage was used to dredge sand (d50 = 0.27 mm) in the sediment pit that is 7.6 m (25 feet) long, 3.7 m (12 feet) wide and 1.5 m (5 feet) deep. A laser profiler, a model hopper barge attached with pressure gauges, a flowmeter and density gauge aid in determining the production from the laboratory model of the cutter suction dredge were used. The before and after bathymetry measurements using a laser profiling system are used to determine the amount of sediment remaining after dredging. The hopper is instrumented with pressure gauges to measure the amount of sediment contained in the hopper. The laboratory dredge system has a magnetic flowmeter and nuclear density gauge that provide data to calculate the amount of sand delivered to the hopper. The difference between the sand volume from the before and after bathymetry is the amount of sand that is resuspended and subsequently resettles in the dredging area (residual) and the sand that is not picked up by the dredge (spillage). Many issues in laboratory testing were found during the course of testing and solutions were found. The production values are compared with reasoning as to why the differences occur. The results demonstrate the ability and difficulty of measuring the amount of material that is dredged and the amount of spillage and residuals that occurs during dredging.

The volume contains articles concerning the influence of Latinitas in the territory now occupied by Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus’. The articles, all published in English, range from history to literature and to cultural history and the history of ideas. They analyze the issue of building an identity, either real or imagined, from different points of view. Among the most interesting topics are the classical origins of myths and ideas that have helped build the national identities of those that constituted the ethnic mosaic of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the role of Neo-Latin poetry, as a conveyor of Latinitas, in the development of national identities. Because of the significance of Latinitas for both common European cultural traditions and the national cultures, literatures and languages of Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine, it is to be hoped that the subject will continue to attract a good level of attention in the future.

Society expects that buildings and other structures are safe for the people who use them or who are near them. The failure of a building or structure is expected to be an extremely rare event. Thus, society implicitly relies on the expertise of the professionals involved in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the structures it uses.
Structural engineers devote all their effort to meeting society’s expectations effi ciently. Engineers and scientists work together to develop solutions to structural problems. Given that nothing is absolutely and eternally safe, the goal is to attain an acceptably small probability of failure for a structure, a facility, or a situation. Reliability analysis is part of the science and practice of engineering today, not only with respect to the safety of structures, but also for questions of serviceability and other requirements of technical systems that might be impacted by some probability.
The present volume takes a rather broad approach to safety and reliability in Structural Engineering. It treats the underlying concepts of safety, reliability and risk and introduces the reader in a fi rst chapter to the main concepts and strategies for dealing with hazards. The next chapter is devoted to the processing of data into information that is relevant for applying reliability theory. Two following chapters deal with the modelling of structures and with methods of reliability analysis. Another chapter focuses on problems related to establishing target reliabilities, assessing existing structures, and on effective strategies against human error. The last chapter presents an outlook to more advanced applications. The Appendix supports the application of the methods proposed and refers readers to a number of related computer programs.
This book is aimed at both students and practicing engineers. It presents the concepts and procedures of reliability analysis in a straightforward, understandable way, making use of simple examples, rather than extended theoretical discussion. It is hoped that this approach serves to advance the application of safety and reliability analysis in engineering practice.
The book is amended with a free access to an educational version of a Variables Processor computer program. FreeVaP can be downloaded free of charge and supports the understanding of the subjects treated in this book.

It is surprising to realize that no historian of Judaism wrote a history of the Middle Ages in Jewish history. Between 1923 and 1926 a Jewish historian, Shlomo Bernfeld, wrote a three-volume historical work, consisting mainly of an anthology of sources, entitled Sefer ha-Demaot, ‘The Book of Tears’. These volumes present a history of the Middle Ages up to the ‘Age of Reason’, which the author hoped would be the beginning of a new age in which the fate of the Jews would be different, yet this hope, he states in the end of his work, seems to have been unfounded. This article examines such narratives: the way narratives shape the chronological boundaries of the Middle Ages; their consequences concerning the examination of the relationships between Jews and non-Jews in the medieval world; and the place of history of ideas in the descriptions of the Middle Ages.

This volume coincides with the first steps of Horizon Europe in hopes of informing research and innovation planning. The challenges and scepticism facing Big Science were discussed but, despite them, we stand firm in support of the society-wide benefit of scientific projects of such magnitude. In concluding this volume, this article sums these perspectives, drawn from the joint CERN-LSE Alumni Association Belgium workshop held in 2019. Earlier, wider and greater benefits flow from Big, multi-disciplinary Science. These benefits are greatest when the core project is developed in open interaction with youth, local and global communities, engaging ecosystems capable of nurturing early spin-off innovation.

Abstract In this chapter, I review psychology’s contributions to the study of hope. To close potential gaps in this interdisciplinary volume, I include work in psychiatry and nursing. The nearly 400-year history of psychological reflections on hope reveals extended stretches of neglect, alternating with brief flashes of interest. Shifting scientific paradigms are partly to blame. However, I suggest that the greatest challenge for investigators seeking scientific consensus on the topic may be cultural and sociopolitical. I begin with a review of the most significant writings and research on hope, dating back to the seventeenth century. I examine goal-related approaches in greater depth, due to their strong influence on the field of psychology. The latter half of this chapter is more critical and prescriptive. For a deeper commentary, I rely on Markus’s (Meas Interdisciplinary Res Perspect 6:54–77, 2008) distinction between constructs and concepts as well as Danziger’s (Naming the mind: How psychology found its language. Sage Publications, 1997) observation on how psychology found its lexicon. This middle, diagnostic section includes a review of philosophy of science criteria for evaluating theories. I transition to general prescriptions for achieving a better understanding of hope, organized around Bacon’s “four idols” of the mind, and add specific suggestions for future research. I conclude with a summary of recent work within our hope lab.

AbstractThis collected volume is intentionally future-oriented; it is authored by a team of interdisciplinary scientists and practitioners who collaborate to translate research findings into networked adaptive practices that we hope will protect urban communities against the impacts of extreme weather. While future-oriented, we cannot protect future generations against urban weather extremes without understanding the historical processes through which these existential and ethical crises came about. This chapter describes how economic and political institutions produced the climate crisis in ways that also constitute a humanitarian crisis, inscribing climate inequity into the urban built environment and institutions. It offers reflections on ways in which this history must be wrestled with in the context of equitable and resilient urban futures.

Imported oil, nuclear and coal now contribute about 55% of the energy the USA consumes, and those forms of energy are under environmental, social and legal scrutiny. There are limits to which non-“clouded” natural gas and renewables can replace these sources. This has motivated the CCTL to pursue R&D on blending domestically available fuels in thermal reactors to produce more useful gaseous or liquid fuels. Feedstock blending results with batch-fed indirectly heated gasifiers (IHGs) were reported at the three previous Turbo Expo meetings. This is a progress report on initial work with a continuously fed IHG scaled to potentially give a gaseous output suitable for a 5–20 kW microturbine or a reciprocating engine. An electric tube furnace is now used rather than a combustor fueled by the residual char or part of the gaseous or liquid output. Some novel features of this current effort are: a) Biomass blends are auger-fed through a reactor tube fabricated out of available components to simulate a conical shape, b) The output gas is filtered and partially cooled by the incoming biomass feedstock, c) The system has been designed to facilitate feedstock blending studies, d) A trap and external heat exchanger condenses the residual tar, water vapor, and volatile metals, e) The char-ash is collected and stored in a pressure vessel, f) Gas output volume is measured with an orifice dividing system and respirometer. The results of runs in a semi-continuously fed system with various biomass particle sizes and with various blends of biomass and coal are presented. The fate of volatile metals contained in the input feedstock is assessed. With the completion of an external hopper-feeder and the replacement of the electric tube furnace by an output gas or charcoal combustor, a later application to microturbines is within reach.

Deposition of sediment by means of discharging via the bottom doors of a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge is a method often used. This method can be deployed for land reclamation and backfilling of trenches for pipelines or outfalls. The sediment will leave the hopper as a mixture of sand and water. Sand will settle from this mixture. The shape of the under water body is governed by the dynamic settling process from a (sometimes highly concentrated) density current. Slopes angles and density of the sand body and possible segregation is depending on the discharge production, sediment characteristics, water depth and ambient current. In the paper the discharge process is simulated using a 2 dimensional numerical model based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In this model the momentum and sediment transport equations are solved. The model includes a morphological module therefore slopes angles can be predicted. The computational results are validated using laboratory tests. The efficiency of the backfilling process, expressed as the ratio between the volumes of settled sediment in the trench and the discharged sediment, is determined as a function of the domination process parameters.

Abstract Image-based characterization of rock fabric is critical for understanding recovery mechanisms in shale formations due to the significant multiscale nature of shale source rocks. Nanoscale imaging is particularly important for characterizing pore-scale structure of shales. Nanoimaging techniques, however, have a tradeoff between high-resolution/high-contrast sample-destructive imaging modalities and low-contrast/low-resolution sample-preserving modalities. Furthermore, acquisition of nanoscale images is often time-consuming, expensive, and requires signficant levels of expertise, resulting in small image datasets that do not allow for accurate quantification of petrophysical or morphological properties. In this work, we introduce methods for overcoming these challenges in image-based characterization of the fabric of shale source rocks using deep learning models. We present a multimodal/multiscale imaging and characterization workflow for enhancing non-destructive microscopy images of shale. We develop training methods for predicting 3D image volumes from 2D training data and simulate flow through the predicted shale volumes. We then present a novel method for synthesizing porous media images using generative flow models. We apply this method to several datasets, including grayscale and multimodal 3D image volume generation from 2D training images. Results from this work show that the proposed image reconstruction and generation approaches produce realistic pore-scale 3D volumes of shale source rocks even when only 2D image data is available. The models proposed here enable new capabilities for non-destructive imaging of source rocks and we hope will improve our ability to characterize pore-scale properties and phenomena in shales using image data.

The Port Hope Area Initiative involves a process that will lead to the cleanup of low-level radioactive wastes in two communities in Southern Ontario and the construction of three new long-term waste management facilities in those communities. The history of the Initiative provides important insights into local participation and the successes and failures of siting efforts. The wastes resulted from the operations of an industrial process in Port Hope that began in the 1930s. Initially, wastes (contaminated with radium, uranium, and arsenic) from radium processing were deposited in a relatively uncontrolled manner at various locations within the town. By the 1940s, uranium processing wastes were deposited at nearby purpose-built radioactive waste management facilities. The problem of contamination was first recognized in 1974 and the worst cases quickly cleaned up. However, large volumes of contamination remained in the community. There were three successive efforts to develop an approach to deal with the area’s contamination. In the early to mid 1980s, a standard approach was employed; i.e. indentifying the most technically appropriate local site for a disposal facility, proceeding to evaluate that site, and communicating the benefits of the chosen approach to the local community. That approach was resoundingly rejected by local citizens and government representatives. The second effort, an innovative and consultative voluntary siting effort carried out during the late-1980s and early to mid-1990s involved the solicitation of other municipalities to volunteer to host a facility for the disposal of the Port Hope areas wastes. That effort resulted in the identification of a single volunteer community. However, negotiations between the federal government and the municipality were unable to reach an acceptable agreement establishing the conditions for the community to host the waste management facility. The third effort, a community-driven approach, was undertaken in the late-1990s and resulted in an agreement in 2001 between the Government of Canada and the local communities that sets in motion a process for the cleanup of the local wastes and long-term management in new local waste management facilities. This paper provides insights into the history of the problem, the efforts of the federal government over the last two decades to deal with the issue, how local participation and decision-making processes affected the successes of the various siting approaches, and lessons learned that might be of interest to others who must deal with environmental remediation situations that involve siting long-term management facilities.

Abstract There is considerable interest in the “Industry 4.0 project”. Industry hopes that a general solution of the metal removal problem will be found through the use of highly automated manufacturing data. Scientists hope that the computer will provide better models based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Initial attempts leveraging existing models did not result in satisfactory results yet — largely because of mathematical, physical and metallurgical reasons. This paper presents a new mathematical-physical model to describe the total process mechanics from volume conservation, to friction, to metal plasticity with self-hardening or softening effects and dynamic phenomena during metal plastic flow. The softening effects are created by high energy corresponding to high strain-rate resulting in high temperatures. Furthermore, the developed equations for strain-rate discontinuities as well as yield shear stress with body forces have an interdependent relationship and lead to plastic deformation with dynamic behavior in the total chip formation zone. This plastic deformation is the only parameter that will not disappear after completing the process. This leads to the opportunity to check the theoretically developed grid deformation and compare it with practical results of the same area. In this publication this new theory will be used to analyze the complex contact and friction conditions between the chip and tool edge of a twist drill during operation. It will be shown that the existing conditions are leading to high wear at the corner edge and flank wear at the tool cutting edge. In addition, the existing temperatures can be estimated and compared with practical measurements, and all these complex and difficult conditions create a helical spiral chip, which could be developed as it will be presented in this paper.

Annotation:
The volute of low specific speed centrifugal pumps has a great impact on the performance of the pump in that the highest efficiency can only be achieved when the impeller is matched with a well-designed volute. At off-BEP conditions, the performance of pumps declines as a consequence of a mismatch between characteristics of the impeller and the volute. The section area is the most important factor of volute. Numerical simulations and experimental researches have been carried out on the routine-designed impeller and the non-overloading designed impeller (different impeller outlet blade angle between two types of impellers) in the hope of finding out the effect of the section area of volute on low specific speed centrifugal pumps. It has been found that the uneven flow rate on different volute sections caused by the backflow between volute and impeller is one of the reasons for the efficiency decline of pumps at off-BEP conditions, especially in the low flow rate condition. It has also been found that the routine-designed impeller is more easily affected by the section area of volute than non-overloading designed impeller.

Abstract In 2018 Equinor made an unprecedented step for an energy company and made a multi-terabyte dataset from Volve field open. However, there is a long way from downloading data to executing meaningful analysis. With no way of quickly evaluating the data due to its size and unfamiliar file formats the use of Volve data was so far limited. This paper presents our exploratory work related to the realtime drilling part of the dataset. We provide description of common obstacles and approaches for overcoming them. We also describe specific contents of the dataset for others to gauge the potential for case studies. We hope that this will lower the bar for Volve field data accessibility, promote research, and become a catalyst for other data science projects.

The failure mechanism of the composite flexible riser, comprising a pipe with melt fused carbon fiber tape or pultruded composite rods, is not well understood. As there is change in the configuration of the composite layers and its manufacturing methods, so the bulk material property also changes significantly. To capture the correct material model for global FE analysis, real time x-ray computed tomography was performed while the flexible pipe was being compressed. For developing a constitutive model for the composites, a time series of 3D volume images were analyzed quantifying the local strains responsible for the debonding of the layers and the crack development. These values were then used to understand the inter-layer adhesion leading to correlation between the FE global modelling and experiments capable of capturing the progressive delamination. The resulting global modelling was used to determine the area under compressive loading. The effect of global sea conditions and cumulative damage was noted. A correlation between the global model and experiments can be used to optimize riser performance. This method hopes to capture the overall behavior of flexible pipe under compressive loading.

In order to apply the PEFC power generation system in near future, ITRI is cooperating with Taiwanese local electrical company to develop a compact methanol reformer. This methanol reformer can simultaneously catalyze autothermal and steam reforming reactions, depending on the application. Except the catalyst for methanol steam reforming and low temperature water gas shift reactions, ITRI has developed several catalysts for autothermal reforming, high temperature water-gas shift, and CO preferential oxidation reactions. We have integrated these catalysts to assemble a methanol reformer prototype. The characteristics of this methanol reformer operated at steady state are the maximum flow rate of hydrogen being 39 L/min (corresponding to 2.4 kWe), H2 concentration being 45∼65%, CO concentration less than 50 ppm, and the cold startup time less than 35 minutes. In addition, we have been developing a catalyst for methanation reaction. We hope to shorten the start-up time to less than 20 minutes and the volume of the reformer being reduced in half by integrating a good methanation catalyst into my next generation methanol reformer.

For more than a year, the Caribbean economics team at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has focused on the potential implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for lives and livelihoods across the region. The pandemic is still with us, but there is hope that the cycles of lockdowns and containment measures will eventually come to an end as vaccination programs progress, even if unevenly, across the region. However, the availability of vaccine supply remains a concern, and the pandemic continues to pose a constraint for the recovery of key sectors such as tourism and local services sectors. This edition of the Caribbean Quarterly Bulletin focuses on two topics: (1) forecasts of key macroeconomic variables, based on the April 2021 WEO, and (2) financial sector risks. In general, regional economies are embarking on a fragile path to recovery. Continued progress with vaccination programs, credible medium-term fiscal programs, and continued attention to financial vulnerabilities will be needed to push that path to recovery forward.
