AbstractThis thesis entitled “VOCATIVES FOUND THE POEM OF THE COBRA-KING AND THE FROG-KING” is a study about vocatives in The Poem of The Cobra-King and The Frog-King. The aim of this study is to find out the functions of vocatives and types of vocatives also to find out the most dominant function and type of vocatives in The Poem of The Cobra-King and The Frog-King. The main theory used in supporting this study is a theory of vocatives as proposed by Zwicky (1974) and Bungin (2005). To support this study, the researcher employed a descriptive qualitative method since the data of this study are in the form of text. The result of this study indicates that there are two functions of vocatives found in this poem, such as Calls and Addresses. There are four types of vocatives found in this poem, namely Vocative that describes jobs, Vocative in the use of certain social words, Vocative based on characteristics and identity of the interlocutors, and Vocative based on the group of the interlocutors. The most dominant function of vocative found in this poem is the Addresses function that occurs 90 times or 80.36%, followed by Calls that occurs 22 times or 19.64%. While the most dominant type of vocative found is vocative in the use of social words became the most dominant types that occurs 85 times or 75.89% then followed by vocative based on the characteristics and identity of the interlocutors occurs 21 times or 18.75 %, vocative that describes jobs occurs 3 times or 2.67% and the last vocative based on the group of interlocutors occurs 3 times or 2.67 %.

Abstract This paper examines the syntactic structure of Arabic vocatives, focusing on case-marking of vocatives. The assignment of accusative and nominative-like case can be accounted for in the light of Hill (2017)’s proposal which provides the basic structure of the vocative phrase. This paper argues that in Arabic vocatives (i) the particle YAA is a transitive probe with valued [ACC-Case] and unvalued [2nd] and [Distance] features; (ii) The D has the unvalued case feature [u-Case], and it has both the [2nd] and [+Distance] features if it is a free pronoun and (iii) The vocative noun carries the valued [2nd] and [+/-Distance] features. Based on these assumptions, I argued that indefinite vocatives are assigned accusative case only if they are merged with an overt D -n, otherwise a nominative-like case surfaces on the noun by default. Proper names have the same analysis since the presence of the indefinite article -n is a prerequisite for accusative case assignment. Concerning vocatives as heads of Construct States, N-to-D movement takes place in order to assign [+def] feature to D and is assigned accusative case by YAA. Regarding vocatives in demonstrative phrases, the existence of a null D prevents the vocative noun from being assigned an overt accusative case. Concerning vocative pronouns, only accusative case is assigned since the determiner carrying the [u-Case] feature is overt.

Forms of vocatives in a speech define a communicative intention of an utterance, indicating a definite addressee. In the process of communication a vocative is a means of creation a special communicative environment consisting of participants of a conversation. By that it defines a line which connects a sender and a recipient of information as well as being a means of the beginning of the communicative process, keeping it up, changing its course either positively or negatively. Vocatives are actively used in a dialogue to attract attention of an interlocutor as well as for further focus of an utterance. It may be used in different manipulative ways (for example, while communicating with a large number of pupils vocatives may serve as a means to draw attention of a recipient or to single out the personality of a pupil). Vocatives in pedagogical discourse may be expressed by proper names and surnames. A vocative with emotional and evaluative suffixes, evaluative adjectives or nouns, possessive pronouns becomes more expressive. They create a more subjective character while qualifying an addressee and by this they become a source of anthropocentricity, representation of a “humane factor” in the language.

The question of whether intonation contours directly signal meaning is an old one. We revisit this question using vocatives in Colombian Spanish (Bogotá). We recorded speakers' productions in three pragmatic conditions – greeting, confirmation-seeking, and reprimand – and compared proper names (vocatives) to situation-specific one-word utterances, such as¡Hola!‘Hello’ (non-vocatives). Intonational analyses showed no direct one-to-one correspondence between the pragmatic conditions and intonation contours: (a) for vocatives, e.g. a rising–falling contour occurred in both greetings and reprimands; and (b) for non-vocatives, e.g. a step-down contour (a.k.a. calling contour) occurred in both greeting and confirmation-seeking conditions. Looking beyond intonation to consider other phonetic variables – spectral tilt, duration, alignment of tonal targets, f0-range, f0-slope – the results showed that the intonation contours that occurred in more than one pragmatic condition differed in phonetic realisation, e.g. rising–falling vocatives showed differences in f0-range of the rise and spectral tilt. However, the corresponding non-vocatives did not show the same differences. Furthermore, vocatives in greeting contexts were realised differently from non-vocatives in greeting contexts. In sum, the pragmatic condition affects the prosodic realisation of (non-)vocatives, but the relationship is complex. The results are discussed in the light of prosodic constructions, leading to the conclusion that the prosodic realisation of vocatives and non-vocatives in Bogotá Colombian Spanish cannot be easily modelled by prosodic constructions.

Annotation:
Latvian grammars state that the form of adjectives modifying vocatives in Latvian can be determined by morphological rather than syntactic case: a special vocative ending -o is claimed to be possible only when the vocative controlling agreement has a special form distinct from the nominative. This would contradict Zwicky’s principle of phonology-free and morphology-free syntax, as normally only the morphosyntactic feature value of the noun should be visible to the adjective, not the way in which it is realised. It has been suggested, on the other hand, that the vocative is not really a case, and that typologically speaking it is not a likely agreement feature. The aim of the article is, then, to examine how vocative agreement actually works in Latvian, and how the apparent exception to the general principles ruling agreement can be explained. First, the degree of integration of the vocative in the Latvian case system is examined (in comparison with Lithuanian), and it is suggested that the zero endings characteristic of Latvian vocatives (as a result of phonetic development) could have been reinterpreted as truncation, and that a similar truncated ending was created for the adjective through borrowing of the accusative ending. As truncated vocatives tend to be asyntactic (often being incapable of adjectival modification), it is suggested that the extension of the truncated form to the adjective was not mediated by the regular mechanisms of agreement but by what is tentatively described as ‘vocative smear’―the phonologically driven spread of the vocative feature of truncation to the surroundings of the vocative noun.

This paper takes a critical interactional sociolinguistic approach to examine the construction of interculturality (e.g., Nishizaka 1995; Mori 2003) through the use of vocatives in the discourse of a multi-cultural graduate student project group at a large American university. Interviews and descriptive information contextualize the analysis to demonstrate that the use of vocatives achieves a tight linking of inclusion but also inequality in the group talk that involves the Japanese member. The group’s vocatives show a shared interest in bringing the Japanese member into the interaction, but they also construct unequal rights to the floor. They contribute to an interculturality of subordination and an artificial sense of intimacy, characteristics consistent with the institutional setting of the group and attitudes members held about each other. In this environment, the status quo of power identities and a deficit view of the Japanese member goes largely uncontested and limits the ability of American members to learn from their Japanese partner.

Abstract Many languages use pitch to express pragmatic meaning (henceforth ‘tune’). This requires segmental carriers with rich harmonic structure and high periodic energy, making vowels the optimal carriers of the tune. Tunes can be phonetically impoverished when there is a shortage of vowels, endangering the recovery of their function. This biases sound systems towards the optimisation of tune transmission by processes such as the insertion of vowels. Vocative constructions—used to attract and maintain the addressee’s attention—are often characterised by specific tunes. Many languages additionally mark vocatives morphologically. In this article, we argue that one potential pathway for the emergence of vocative morphemes is the morphological re-analysis of tune-driven phonetic variation that helps to carry pitch patterns. Looking at a corpus of 101 languages, we compare vocatives to structural case markers in terms of their phonological make-up. We find that vocatives are often characterised by additional prosodic modulation (vowel lengthening, stress shift, tone change) and contain substantially fewer consonants, supporting our hypothesis that the acoustic properties of tunes interact with segmental features and can shape the emergence of morphological markers. This fits with the view that the efficient transmission of information is a driving force in the evolution of languages, but also highlights the importance of defining ‘information’ broadly to include pragmatic, social, and affectual components alongside propositional meaning.

My primary concerns are what vocatives were used and how they were used in Early Modern English 'gentry' comedies. As there are of course no authentic recorded data from the period, I have investigated a collection of drama texts in the Vocative-Focussed Socio-Pragmatic Corpus. Methodologically, I take a corpus-based approach, and combine quantitative and qualitative analyses in a historical pragmatic perspective. As a consequence, my research is interdisciplinary in nature in that it pivots on several linguistic fields, i.e. historical linguistics, pragmatics, stylistics, sociolinguistics, as well as corpus linguistics. In my thesis, compiling an annotated corpus is both an end product in itself as well as data. In the Introduction, I present my research questions and the overall scope of the thesis. Chapter 2 provides a theoretical framework for the analysis of vocative by reviewing major works on address terms and politeness theory. Chapter 3 explains the annotation systems adopted in the corpus. Chapter 4 gives a general view of the distribution pattern and lexical components of vocatives in the corpus. Chapters 5-7 focus on the quantitative analysis of vocatives, in particular, the relation between the vocative form and the various attributes of the interlocutors. Chapter 8 discusses pragmatic functions of the vocatives by analysing examples in the corpus. Chapter 9 provides a case study in which shifts of vocatives are discussed from a stylistic and pragmatic perspective, using the notion of social network and the framework drawn from the analyses in the preceding chapters.

The aim of this paper is to briefly clarify the categorization and usage of kinship terms in American and British English in comparison with the Swedish kinship terms, both considering the vocative use and the referential function. There will also be a comparison with previous studies. The Swedish language contains considerably more detailed definitions for kinship. By choosing mostly informants with experience of both language cultures, this paper will investigate and explore whether English speakers themselves experience this as a lack of kinship vocabulary, and in what circumstances supplementary explanation is needed to clarify the identities of referents and addressees.  It will further be established how and when the use of such terms can give rise to misunderstandings or confusion. Kinship terms will also be considered in connection with the present social and cultural environment. Seemingly, the use of kin terms has changed over recent decades and there appears to be etymological, lexicological and semantic causes for such misunderstandings. This essay research was conducted using interviews in which informants relate their experiences of language changes as well as regional variations with respect to how family members and relatives are addressed or referred to. Kinship terms are insightful and important within the field of genealogy and have implications for diverse disciplines such as law, church history, genetics, anthropology and popular custom. Interestingly, kinship terms can be found to be used where there is no existing kinship at all. They also have a great impact on daily communication in terms of respect and relations, and as expressions of empathy, responsibility and solidarity.     Key words: American English, anthropology, British English, communication, culture, etymology, genealogy, kinship terms, referential, relations, respect, social control, Swedish, vocatives

This study aims at analyzing the vocative Nem, original from the social dialect of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the linguistic imaginary of the Brazilian people, based on the concept of Patrick Charaudeau (2008) about the social-discursive imaginary. The theoretical perspective approached is based on the Discourse Analysis. It is firstly presented the theoretical reference that served as base for the study, and after that, the path of the research is described, comprising the corpus collected in social relationship networks and blogs from the internet. Beyond the material gathered for researches, some personal experience on the theme is also used, in classrooms, and in conversations with friends. During the researches, the focus was the description of the vocabulary, starting from brief comments regarding the linguistic variation and prejudice, as well as attitudes, believes and imaginaries. The analysis performed has demonstrated the types of negative believes held by certain social groups, as well as the construction of identity, by some individuals of minor social classes, what can be noticed by some attitudes of the speakers. Some time ago, it was not observed an identity affirmative attitude by the speakers. This recent behavior can only be analyzed in this way, as this study was done almost live. As a result, the research revealed the negative imaginary cultivated by the speakers of the major variety of the language about the uses and users of such lexical item. It was also observed how the users of the vocative faced rejection. Such considerations can help with the linguistic studies in order to reduce linguistic prejudice in mother tongue teaching in regards to the variety of the minor social dialect

This research develops aspects of insertion within the vocativo syntax. Based on enunciation basic syntax, in which the utterance is approached from a historical perspective , the vocative can operate in two disjunction plans , namely the organization's plan of phrasal structure and plan expressible . Thus , the vocative is inserted in parsing as not only the term which functions as " call " , but also as " end support " within the sentence , because it presents the enunciative function of designating places or positions to be occupied by enunciated . This job then it shows that the vocative is not disconnected from the sentence, as generally It is addressed in more formalist perspectives of syntax. Rather, he fully integrates the syntactical body of the sentence , since the linguistic gains identity precisely in the inseparable relationship between the plans of organic structure and of enunciation.

The thesis aims at studying the vocation for the missions ad gentes, starting from a group of French religious men belonging to different orders, especially the Jesuits, the Dominicans and the priests of MEP (Missions Etrangères de Paris). A first part deals with the genesis of such a vocation: the part played by the laymen appears essential, then taken in turn by the religious orders who widely encouraged their members to rediscover an “apostolic spirit”. In a second part, through the study of Jesuit indipetae (letters of requirement for India) we look into the specific subject of the “vocation” trying in particular to study its consequences, the ways in which it is discerned and the motivations which moved the candidates to ask for that mission. Finally, in a third part, we consider the politics applied by the religious orders so as to administer those vocations and choose the future missionaries

This thesis aims to describe and analyze the vocative in the syntactic structure of Brazilian Portuguese BP. In order to obtain evidences about the position of this constituent in the syntactic structure, we considered constructions in which there is cooccurrence of topics, evaluative expressions, interjections, invocations, and we compared some constructions in BP with some examples of European Portuguese EP. This comparison focuses on constructions with the particle sô, reduced form of the vocative senhor in the dialect of Minas Gerais, and the vocative particle pá, reduced form of the vocative rapaz in EP. We used as theoretical framework some hypotheses of the Minimalist Program (Chomsky, 1995), the sentential cartography (Rizzi 1997, 2004), and of the theoretical proposal of Hill (2007) and Hill & Stavrou (2013), according to which, vocatives and interjections are located on a superstructure, in the syntax-pragmatics interface, an area located above CP in a projection SAP (Speech Act Phrase). The basic order of a construction with vocative is one in which this component is located on the left of the sentence. The Portuguese language data shows that the variation in word order in the constructions with vocative is a result of the movement operations of other constituents that occur in these constructions and the vocative is always in situ. The arrangement of the constituents in these constructions influences the interpretation of the vocative: if it appears in the starting position, it works as a call function; if it appears in other positions, it is interpreted as the addressee. According to the analysis of different types of vocatives, we identify in BP that there are different types of interjections: some which express the state of mind of the speaker; and others as the particles of indirect call, that may themselves or together with a vocative works as a way of call. We noticed that the particles of indirectly call are may generally precede a calling and, if an interjection itself precedes a vocative, there will be an addressee and not a call. Therefore, in relation to the hypothesis that the interpretation of the vocative may vary according to the type of interjection that it precedes, we highlighted a bipartite typology of vocatives and interjections.

O papel do reconhecimento do “outro”, no homem, é um fenómeno de dialogicidade que abole as fronteiras dialéticas da pura argumentação e permite o brotar da reciprocidade; Abstract: This dissertation intends, in its greater scope, to make a link between the original and constitutive support of the human being, the concrete manifestation of pedagogical act's existential sense and its embodiments: dialogical, personalistic, communitarian and humanist. Our proposal initially goes through a search of the Self through the achievement of the person, from Man to the individual (in its various vicissitudes), till its development in a pedagogical conscience that is a precursor of action, knowing, feeling and, fundamentally, of the act of “Recognize”, as a justifying and instigating process of a Pedagogy of Recognition. It is an innovative path in the sense that it initiates itself from a Philosophical Anthropology and from an Anthroposophy and it continues through the procedural intricacies of lonerganian consciousness and buberian phenomenology of relation, intending to promote, in its culmination, a cultural ambience of dialogic pedagogy, inserted in a communitarian topos, presupposed and implicitly proposed in a Recognition Theory, that places itself in the disciplinary geography of Philosophy of Education and in the “Dynamics of Interpersonal Relationships”. Therefore, the epilogue is the recognition: as a radical and subtle outcome, expressed in the intersubjectivity. The Pedagogy of Recognition as co-creation and vocative practice is based on a route of idiosyncratic structures of support of the way in how to be there is done (built and accomplished). We start from the de-axialization of the topic “Self” (anthropos) to a transversal dialogical structure. We defend that all true life is relationship, a buberian statement that all alone drops the topical classical border and makes room for the dialogical and essential condition of doing of the human being. The role of recognition of the “other”, in Man, is a dialogical phenomenon that abolishes the dialectic borders of pure argument and allows the sprouting of reciprocity.

Annotation:
Today, the number of female students that enrol in degrees related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas is quite low. So, numerous initiatives have arisen to promote these degrees and encourage female students in these areas. In this context, the EuLES Network (u-Learning Environments in Higher Education), an interdisciplinary network created in 2010 at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) to foster research, interaction, cooperation and transfer of knowledge and technologies related to learning and open education, has developed two projects oriented to High School Students: “WikinformáticA! en Aragon” and “Women in STEM by EuLES”. WikinformáticA! en Aragón is a competition for student groups in which they develop a wiki on prominent women in the history of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The objective is the visibility of women involved in technology. The purpose of the Women in STEM project is to offer testimonies of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to encourage scientific vocations, especially in young people and girls. The project consists of conducting video interviews of women who work or study in these disciplines. All the videos, along with a short biography, are posted on the web.
