This paper aims to combine two vision systems as a new technology to suggest the improvement in the continuing problem of Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) accidents. A combined enhanced flight vision system and synthetic vision system seems to hold the solution, while it unhesitatingly accommodated to the commercial and General aviation instrument environment if pilots are getting minimal instrument training. This research shows the benefit of combined enhanced flight vision and synthetic vision systems based on analysis of the accident that occurred in 2013 on approach at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. It is shown that the use of a combined system, could have prevented this accident. The head-up display is taken to facilitate this technology to the pilot to be able to see and read accurately using sky lenses.

Background. Older adults with low vision are especially vulnerable to falls. There are no comprehensive reviews of fall prevention interventions for older adults with vision loss who live in the community. Purpose. The aim of this study was to review the evidence regarding community-based falls prevention interventions that appear inclusive of and/or accessible to individuals with low vision. Method. A scoping review was completed using the framework developed by Arksey and O’Malley, and the charted data were analyzed using sums and percentages and qualitative content analysis. Findings. Seventeen publications were selected for this review. The analysis allowed for a thorough description of the types of falls prevention interventions (multiple components, home safety/modification, tai chi, the Alexander Technique, improvement of vision through vision assessment and referral, vision/agility training, and yoga), how each intervention addresses vision impairment, and the relation of results to falls risk. Implications. Falls prevention research targeting individuals with visual impairment is limited, and the intervention approaches available may not be effective for older adults with permanent vision loss.

Diabetic retinopathy is the major ocular complication associated with diabetes, and represents the leading cause of legal blindness in the working-age population of developed countries. Although classically diagnosed based on abnormalities of the retinal microvasculature, diabetic retinopathy is now widely recognized as a neurovascular disease. While all patients with diabetes are at increased risk for eye disease including diabetic retinopathy, proactive measures, and timely intervention can prevent or delay subsequent vision loss. Systemic management of diabetes by combined control of glycemia, blood pressure, and serum lipid levels remains the most important method of preventing diabetic retinopathy onset and progression. Once detected, surgical and medical interventions including photocoagulation, vitrectomy, and intravitral drug injection can help preserve vision. However, the need for improved detection methods and therapies that will allow earlier diagnosis and treatment remains apparent. This review summarizes current techniques for the prevention and intervention for diabetic retinopathy, and examines ongoing developments in the search for new endpoints and therapies as they apply to preventing vision loss associated with diabetes.

Background. According to the Center for Medical Statistics of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the number of children with ophthalmic diseases has increased significantly over the last decade. The purpose of the study was to determine the awareness of teachers of secondary schools (schools, lyceums) on the problem of visual impairment among schoolchildren with the identification of their willingness to participate in preventive measures. Materials and methods. The materials of the study were the results of a sociological survey of teachers of schools and lyceums in Ukraine (a total of 6215 questionnaires were subject to analysis). We used the method of sociological research and methods of medical statistics, in particular to calculate the representativeness and reliability of the survey results. The study complied with modern European requirements for anonymity; each of the respondents was involved in the survey only after prior oral voluntary consent. The results revealed a lack of awareness of teachers in the prevention of visual impairment among schoolchildren, their willingness to participate in prevention activities and the high need for information support for modern prevention technologies. The majority of respondents supported the need to introduce regular vision testing in childhood, including in the framework of the relevant state prevention program. Conclusions. The majority of teachers (99.40 ± 0.10 %) supporting the expediency of introducing regular vision testing in children, (97.38 ± 0.20 %) support the introduction of a state prevention program to preserve vision from childhood. Based on the results of the study, promising for further research is the study of the possibility of involving teachers in preventive measures and participation in comprehensive programs for the prevention of ophthalmic pathology among students. It is also important to find effective ways of information support for educators on modern prevention technologies, risk factors for the formation of visual impairments in schoolchildren in order to prevent the formation of stigma against children with visual impairments and disorders in their environment.

Abstract Disease prevention is central to healthy aging. People with vision impairment are more likely than those without to report barriers to accessing health care and have unmet health care needs. We examined the association between functional vision impairment and preventive care uptake among adults aged 65 years and older in the 2016 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. The outcome of interest was being up-to-date with the recommended core clinical preventive services, as defined by Healthy People 2020: influenza and pneumococcal vaccination, and colorectal cancer screening for men, with the addition of breast cancer screening for women. Self-reported vision impairment was defined as blindness or serious difficulty seeing, even when wearing glasses. In models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics (including age), access to care, and health/functional status, there was no difference in the odds of reporting being up-to-date with the recommended core preventive services among men with vision impairment compared to those without (odds ratio [OR]=0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.8-1.01); however, men with vision impairment were 0.82 times (95% CI=0.71-0.94) less likely than those without to report being up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening. Women with vision impairment were less likely than those without to report being up-to-date with the recommended core preventive services (OR=0.77, 95% CI=0.69-0.87); among the different services, the odds were lowest for reporting breast and colorectal cancer screening. These findings suggest that to achieve higher rates of preventive care uptake, especially cancer screening, older adults with vision impairment may be a special group to target.

The author's model of the system for prevention and counteraction to customs offenses is presented in the article for the first time. It is shown that this system is a two-element set, the components of which are the legal and regulatory framework in this area, and the state authorities authorized to perform state functions in the customs sphere that interact with each other and the external environment in order to ensure prevention and counteraction to the violation of customs rules. Two types of connections between elements of the system of prevention and counteraction to a customs offense are shown – unilateral and bilateral ties. The principles of administration of the preventing system and counteracting customs offenses in the Ukrainian state are analyzed by analyzing the content of such an element of the system as the state authorities in the customs sphere. As a result of this analysis, it has been established that in Ukraine, the prevention and counteraction of customs offenses is most urged by SFS. It was found out that in Ukrainian practice of preventing and counteracting customs offenses, SFS plays a predominantly preventive, prophylactic role rather than punitive role in studying the purpose and functional load of SFS. The author's vision of interconnectedness and interdependence of ties between the elements of the system of prevention and counteraction to customs offenses is developed: at the normative and legal level, tasks, functions, rights and responsibilities of SFS are fixed, while the latter holds the norm-setting initiative and implements it, thus changing the state and meaningful content of regulatory and legal support.

The problem of preserving the vision of younger generation is one of the most pressing issues not only in the field of health, but also in the field of education. This problem has become especially important in the context of intensification of modern school students' education. Unfortunately, over the past decades, there has been an increase in prevalence of visual impairment of children. Currently there is a special term — «school short-sightedness (Myopia) ". According to many researchers, vision problems begin from the moment the children enter school, and this alarming trend is being detected around the world today. The article presents the results of a survey of Moscow school teachers conducted in January 2020 in order to identify the level and content of their knowledge about visual disorders, awareness of issues of vision protection and methods of work with students, as well as the request for training in activities aimed at preventing and correcting visual disorders of students. 387 teachers from Moscow state schools (31educational complex from different administrative districts of Moscow) took part in the survey. The survey data obtained confirm that today in educational organizations the work on protection of children's vision is episodic, or is not carried out. The reasons for this are insufficient knowledge and lack of special training of teachers in issues of vision protectionof students. All of the above confirms the relevance of development of measures for activities in educational organizations for vision protection, dictates the need to develop both methodological support and educational training programs for teachers aimed at prevention and correction of visual disorders of students.

Geriatric ophthalmology is assuming an increased importance in the 1980s. Never before have elderly citizens had the opportunities for visual rehabilitation and vision care that they have today. Geriatric ophthalmology stresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of vision problems in an understanding, caring, and efficient manner. This article discusses three aspects of geriatric ophthalmology: facts about vision and aging, modern advances in geriatric ophthalmology, and recommendations.

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of registrable blindness among the working age population of the UK. Primary prevention associated with improved medical management and the introduction of national screening programmes aim to reduce the incidence of eye disease. Should retinopathy develop, there are several treatments that can help to preserve vision. While these interventions can prevent or delay visual loss, many patients with diabetes still experience significant functional and practical difficulties as a result of impaired vision. Recognising visual problems at an early stage is important as this ensures improved support from the multidisciplinary team with appropriate education, timely visual impairment registration and access to support services.

BackgroundOlder people with vision impairment have significant ongoing morbidity, including risk of falls, but are neglected in fall prevention programmes. PlaTFORM is a pragmatic evaluation of the Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise fall prevention programme for older people with vision impairment or blindness (v-LiFE). Implementation and scalability issues will also be investigated.MethodsPlaTFORM is a single-blinded, randomised trial designed to evaluate the v-LiFE programme compared with usual care. Primary outcomes are fall rate over 12 months, measured using prospective monthly fall calendars, and function and participation assessed by the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument (Late-Life FDI) Function component. The secondary outcome is rate of falls requiring medical care. Activity-normalised fall rate will be estimated using accelerometer-measured physical activity data. EuroQol 5-dimension 5-level questionnaire will measure quality of life and impact of falls. Health record linkage will estimate resource use associated with falls. v-LiFE cost-effectiveness will be determined compared with usual care. 500 participants (250 per group) can provide 90% power to detect a significant between-group difference in fall rates; 588 will be recruited to allow for drop-out. Falls per person-year and Late-Life FDI will be compared between groups.DiscussionPlaTFORM will determine if falls can be prevented among older people with vision loss through a home-based exercise programme. v-LiFE embeds balance and strength training within everyday activities with the aim of preventing falls. The study will also determine whether the programme can be effectively delivered by personnel who provide Orientation and Mobility training for people with vision impairment.Trial registration numberACTRN12616001186448p.

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of symptoms of computer vision syndrome and to identify its associated factors. The secondary objective was to assess knowledge and practices related to preventing computer vision syndrome symptoms. Methods: The data for this cross-sectional study were collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 713 female undergraduates studying business and medicine in Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included computer vision syndrome validated symptoms and factors associated with computer vision syndrome development. Results: The most common symptom due to prolonged computer use was neck or shoulder pain, reported by 82.2% of the subjects. Overall, 66.5% of the subjects suffered from headache and 51.5% from dry eyes, in mild, moderate, or severe form. Business students were 1.6 times as likely as medical students to suffer from computer vision syndrome (odds ratio = 1.65; 95% confidence interval: 1.22, 2.24). The use of electronic devices for more than 5 h (odds ratio = 1.52; 95% confidence interval: 1.07, 2.16) was also associated with experiencing computer vision syndrome symptoms. Regarding computer vision syndrome prevention, factors such as hours of use, screen distance, screen brightness, and room illumination showed statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The prevalence of computer vision syndrome symptoms was significantly higher among business students, who reported lower awareness and poor practice measures of computer use recommendations. Relevant awareness campaigns focusing on the appropriate use of computers are highly recommended.
